Slideshow

The most challenging component of this project was capturing photos of things that properly represent themes of globalization in Philadelphia. This is actually the primary task of the project. The next challenging part was to explain the global impact of the organization, object, etc. I found it difficult to write two solid paragraphs that made sense. The preliminary work, determining what type of photos to capture, was time consuming and I was left with little time to thoroughly complete the other tasks.

I walked around with the globalization topics that we discussed in mind. I snapped pictures of any object that might have any relation to any of the topics. Then, I reviewed all of the pictures and assigned globalization topics to each. Next, I researched the essentiality, purpose of the thing(s) that were in the picture. For instance, I took a picture of the freight train that passes my building of residence daily. I proceeded to research the importance of railroads…

My favorite picture, regardless of its quality, might be the one of the freight train. The picture relates to the global economy theme. The picture might be my most unique as well.

The evidence of globalization in Philadelphia is substantial. I think that there is more evidence than what I found or acknowledged. I can’t say that there is more or less evidence of globalization in other cities versus the city of Philadelphia. My perspective while completing this assignment may have been limited. In order to answer his question, I would have to investigate…

In the future, I would anticipate the difficulties that I might encounter while completing this assignment. I did not expect the photo-taking process to be difficult, nor did I expect to have a hard time assigning global themes to them.

Session One

I started the first session of mentoring for my capstone today. I have been setting dates, schedules and plans for weeks. I had to wait about an hour after my arrival at the school to meet the five girls that I am mentoring. One of the after school teachers—or whatever title fits their role—warned me, “They are a handful.” I listened to her advice, but I figured they would not expose that mischievous side in my presence. We entered the “mentoring room” and the girls immediately asked, “What school [do] you go to?” and ”What grade [are] you in?” along with ninety-nine other questions. I decided to make the first meeting an introductory session i.e. explanation of my plan and what they should expect. The girls wrote down questions, comments, and concerns they have and want to discuss. When I asked questions one of them was sure to ask me another. Surprisingly I was not frustrated. When I left I did not expect them to have written questions and concerns that would help me assist them, but they did. There are some grammatical errors and some questions that I can’t answer, but the content is helpful. I look forward to meeting with the girls again and successfully mentoring them.

"Collapse-ibility" Investigation of Indonesia & El Salvador

Posted by Amber Housley in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 10:11 am
View HERE.

El Salvador, a country from my region to-date, endures hurricanes and suffers from a number of human-induced environmental issues such as: water-pollution and climate change. Indonesia, a country from my previous region, experiences tsunamis (and the like) and deals with water and air pollution. There are many issues within these countries in addition to those that I mentioned. Deforestation is the main environmental commonality between Indonesia and El Salvador. Climate change and environmental damage afflict both countries significantly.

I began this process by entering all of the guidelines for this project into a word document. I applied the five-point framework to each of the countries and researched information that corresponds to each. The document that I created was consistently referred to throughout this process. Google was of great assistance in acquiring websites that produce information that is essential to understanding and determining the “collapse-ibility” of the countries. I encountered websites like: U.S. Department of State and environmental organizations. The most tedious task, other than using the five-point framework, was settling on an appealing and informational layout. Other steps were to organize, form my bibliography, and incorporate pictures.

The five-point framework was all of straightforward, difficult and perplexing. Categories (points) like: hostile neighbors and trade partners were open. I did not enjoy wrapping my research around the point framework because some of the information lacked. The process of indentifying recent, accurate sources was frustrating.

Things I'd Change...I would address the 5 points in further depth. I made some connections to Collapse and mentioned the issues that support each category, but the paragraphs could be longer and more detailed. *The information was still adequate and well presented.

The project was different, complex, and plenty other things. More time for completion is necessary for this project.

Posted by Amber Housley in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Screen shot 2011-03-17 at 5.21.49 PM

Bien hecho…a David Alfaro Siqueiros.

Dear Duane,

Sorry I sounded weird last night, but the parental units were right there. Dad was in his chair and Mom was on the sofa—both sitting as far from each other as they could while still being in the same room. They’re doing the not-talking thing again. It keeps me busy.

Dad: Justin, would you please tell your mother she’s being paranoid?

Me: Dad says lighten up Mom.

Mom: Justin, please inform your father he’s a liar.

Me: This is so lame, would you guys just talk to each other?

Remember those conversations that you were in the middle of? Now all you have to do is march around and shoot guns. Want to trade? I better go; Mrs. Perez is giving me the eye like she suspects I’m not doing algebra.

Adios and hasty banana.

                                                                       Your suffering brother,

                                                                       Justin

P.S. The units are both off work. Mom said she needed a mental health day but I bet it’s backfiring. All that will be left are two pairs of empty shoes with smoke coming out of them by the time I get home.

Q2B_Reflection

Posted by Amber Housley in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 2:30 pm
Here is my project.

My first step in this process entailed performing general research. I made a list of possible topics to search for, that pertain to laws, cases, and offices. The topics on my list were: health, labor, civil rights, family and finance. As I searched these topics others came about such as the Philadelphia Curfew Ordinance and the process of obtaining a passport. I came across helpful websites that thoroughly presented cases and laws that affect me. At some point, I thought about my life and circumstances and what laws and court cases impact me without researching. For the bureaucratic offices, I viewed the bureaucratic projects that the class completed.

The process was straightforward, but overall difficult. Finding court cases, laws and bureaucratic processes that impact me directly was the most difficult and time-consuming aspect. I went back and forth a few times to ensure that I chose some different topics that actually impact me and I could explain. I anticipate that I will interact more directly with the government as I age. Currently, I interact with the government through my mother. In the completion of this project, I learned about government programs, laws, and court cases that I had not heard of before. This project helped me examine how the government impacts my life whether negative or positive.

#Finalize & Extend

Posted by Amber Housley in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 5:38 pm

I left a message at the SEPTA Community Affairs Unit phone line. In the message I stated my name, the school I attend and that I wanted to speak with someone who could aid in my lobbying process. SEPTA Officer Macklin returned my phone call informing me to e-mail him about the details of my plan. I e-mailed the officer and will hopefully speak with him soon about my take on the issue and how he and SEPTA can help. In short, I stated that I was lobbying for public transportation safety as an American Government class assignment. I also mentioned that I wanted to discuss concerns about the issue and prevention methods. Any additional information that is necessary will be given as requested. I will continue this assignment until I have spoken with someone who can directly impact this issue and help make awareness. However, I am still awaiting a response from Officer Macklin and will not take further action until he responds to my e-mail.

My Communication Tactics remain the same:

  • Letters to the editor, editorials, and commentary
  • Phone calls to the targeted decision maker
  • Faxes to the targeted decision maker
  • Emails to the targeted decision maker
  • Personalized letters and postcards to the targeted decision maker
  • Personal visits with the targeted decision maker

FAFSA Process_Reflection

Posted by Amber Housley in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 7:05 pm

The bureaucratic task that my partner, Lenea, and I selected is FAFSA. FAFSA is the free application for federal student aid, which is used for receipt of federal, school, and state aid. Lenea and I began by identifying the major components of the FAFSA—documentation, important steps, etc—we then examined the general components in greater depth. Eventually we both tried to tackle different aspects of the FAFSA process. We reconvened to share the information we found regarding our assigned parts of the FAFSA via google document and in-person discussion. As we both anticipated, the flow chart layout was the most challenging and time-consuming part of the project. However, we both continued to collaborate and compromise to create a solid, effective, and visually appealing product.

The paperwork for the FAFSA was straightforward, but when I arrived at the parent section things became confusing. I was not familiar with some of the questions—maybe because I am not familiar with the terms and I do not possess the information that was requested. I am sure that parents will be able to properly complete the section. I can’t identify any aspects of the FAFSA that should be changed because I understand, somewhat, why each step might be essential to the purpose of the process. The system might have become complicated so that people do not attempt to manipulate the system. The FAFSA specifically inquires a lot about family income, earnings, etc. The questions serve to ensure that the proper amount of money is granted to each family.

Public Transportation Safety Concerns_ Communication Plan

Posted by Amber Housley in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I would like to directly contact organizations that deal with the public transportation safety issue. First, I will deal with the smaller organizations. Then, I will learn more about the more influential people who have the authority to alter and initiate laws. I would sit in on public meetings, if there are any regarding the issue. I will ingest the plans/topics/concerns, and discuss solutions. Currently, I consider discussing the issues with Philadelphia School District students a necessary step. I stated in an earlier lobbying post, “Police have determined that most crimes that occur on SEPTA transportation usually take place during afternoon hours especially during school dismissal time. Therefore, most of the crimes trace back to high school students.” It would be helpful to contact and collaborate with people who have been working on the issue and who share concerns similar to mine.

In my previous lobbying posts I mentioned some groups that are essential to resolving the issue and have been working in communities to raise awareness. I do not necessarily see myself speaking in front of a group of people to express my take on the issue. However, I am more than willing to work “behind the scenes” and help to organize a public event or the like. My next step in this process is identifying the members of these community groups, their group goals and initiatives, etc. My hope is that collaborating with these groups will lead to a set proposal.  The proposal might be viewed and considered by Mayor Nutter, Commissioner Charles Ramsey, and anyone who takes this issue seriously. Mayor Nutter and Commissioner Ramsey are officials who I do not think will overlook the issue.

The first organization that I will attempt to collaborate with is the SEPTA Community Affairs Unit.

The Community Affairs Unit Address & Contact Information:

Resea de Mar Adentro

Posted by Amber Housley in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 5:24 pm

Lobbying #3- Public Transportation Crime

Posted by Amber Housley in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, November 26, 2010 at 8:54 am
  • Public Transportation Act 2010- implemented to ensure transit safety nationwide.
  • The bill is bipartisan and was written by Chairman Chris Dodd, Ranking member Richard Shelby & Chairman Robert Menendez.

The Pubic Transportation Safety Act 2010 aims to:

·      Establish a national public safety plan
·      Increase federal funding
·      Establish a transit monitor
·      Authorize appropriations for the public transportation safetyFederal Transit Administration (FTA)
FTA supports public transportation systems around the United States. Safety is the United States Department of Transportation’s highest priority.
“On December 8, 2009, FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff joined Secretary Ray LaHood at a hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, to discuss the Federal role in rail transit safety.”

Currently, there are no laws regarding crime prevention for SEPTA, however SEPTA Safety Plans and Actions are being negotiated. SEPTA created a Resource Management Review Group to brainstorm ideas for the safety and betterment of the customers and the company.

The SEPTA community affairs unit works with the Transit Police and various communities. The unit communicates with schools, community groups via presentation, etc to discuss crime prevention, transit etiquette, and other issues.

"Hanuman Langurs: Evolution and Social Behavior"

Posted by Amber Housley in Science and Society - Best on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 7:13 pm
How Does Evolution Impact the Social Behavior of Hanuman Langurs?

hlangur

The Hanuman Langur is an Asian monkey; whose social behavior is uncanny. Their troops consist of both males and females numbering around 125. The head male—of a troop where there is one male—is competing with other males to maintain his position as leader. When a group of males overthrow the leader —so to speak—they kill his offspring. After that “ritual” one male becomes they new leader. That male then mates with the females of the troop and the process is repeated. The males gain a reproductive advantage because the females are at their maximum sexual receptivity when they lose their offspring.

·      This species is vulnerable to infanticide.

·      Males attack the infants only if they were not present at the time of contraception.

·      The males are usually protective of their offspring, however some still kill their own young.

 Ecology, Social Structure & Evolution

·      Ecology pressures that influence sex ratio populations also affect group size and social structure.

·      Increasing the Hanuman Langur troop size might prevent takeover and infanticide.

One study reports that species such as:  P.ursinus, Propithecus diadema, and Semnopithecus entellus (Hanuman Langur) have over a 10 percent mortality rate of infants. Another species, the Red Howler species, shows that the rate of infanticide increases with group size. However, there was a change in rate when the Red Howler groups became large enough to cause paternal confusion—the males in the species normally do not kill their own young. The confusion causes males refrain from infanticide, which causes an overall decrease in the infanticide rate.

Because the social behavior of the Hanuman Langur depends on ecology...ecological evolution impacts the behavior. The ecology of the Hanuman Langur includes varied troop sizes and varied troop constituents, which evoke different behaviors. As previously stated, troop size impacts the level of infanticide.

Questions for Research

What does the social behavior of hanuman langur imply about evolutionary desires to be a leader or at an advantage by any means?

What does this behavior say about evolution in general?

Hanuman Langur selectivity and evolution…
