Lord of the Flies- Brielle Thompson
Due to social hierarchies there is always someone in charge of how citizens will be governed. A notable example of this in modern life is within the political climate. Despite what policies are being supported a person, or branch of government creating systems and laws to obey is an inevitably. Despite what social class someone belongs in there will always be restrictions due to power structures. Lord of the Flies symbolizes how the American political system operates both culturally and systematically . .
Moreover, Lord of the Flies depicts how the American political system works culturally by illustrating how people demand a certain leader based on emotions. This is most common when a country finds itself in conflict with another nation. Often these leaders argue it is necessary for their survival to inflict violent actions against other nations to ensure their own safety. People are drawn to this type of leadership because of the fear they will not survive in the war. Furthermore in the novel the boys are drawn towards the ideology Jack expresses, survival by any means, out of fear they will not escape the island. This school of thought has been prominent throughout the dawn of time, but a recent example was during George W. Bush’s first term. Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 people were drawn to a leader like Bush going into war with countries responsible for this action. His approval rating reached over 90% in 2002 showing how real world scenarios mirror the identical hunt or be hunted mentality the boys had. Another instance this happened when (character name) said, “Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things,” (Golding, 22). That interaction illustrates how people depend on demanding leadership during times of a crisis.
Aside from type of leadership Americans are drawn to Lord of the Flies also symbolizes the type of political parties in the United States. In other words the systematic element of how elected officials are chosen. In The United States' government, there are two main political parties that and ideologies that compete to maintain dominance, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The character who symbolizes similar political doctrines to the Republican party is Jack. One of the instances Jack embodies happened when he only distributed food between him and members of his crew who helped capture the pig. Jack believed since they caught the pig they have the right to not distribute to others since it’s not their responsibility. This mirrors a modern Republican mentality because they advocate everyone has their obligation to provide for themselves. The character who most embodies Democratic thoughts is Piggy because he wishes to ensure everyone shares amongst themselves for survival. This mirrors Democratic ideology because democrats generally advocate for the government intervening in order to help the less fortunate by creating government funded institutions to assist these people.
In conclusion. Lord of the flies shows how the political world works in different manners. The point I proved here was how no matter what their will always be someone below you and/or above you. That is how the social hierarchy works and that was proven in the book.

I know you may be wondering why I am standing in front of you guys. You all most likely know me, but for the ones who do not, my name is Angela Williams. We have been going to school together since 9th grade. To get a better understand of who I am, I’m the girl who was shoved into a locker and made fun of for the whole 10th grade of high school. I bet yall know who I am now. (chuckle)
Well I need to tell you about what has happened since then.
You might have noticed that I left school for a while. I was going through so much and trying to hide it was starting to become harder and harder for me. After getting bullied in school everyday I couldn’t take it anymore so I planned on dropping out and running away. I felt like I wasn’t worth anything. I attempted suicide a couple times, I just felt like I didn’t deserve life. And I damn sure ain’t sign up for this.
Not only was I going through problems in school, I was having family problems. My family was neglecting me and it was like I was nobody to them. My mother treated me so bad. ( pause, take deep breath) I’m sorry this is my first time really telling anyone this. But my mother got pregnant with me by an accident. She only wanted my brother and that is the way she treated us. He was her world and I was just there. If it wasn’t for my grandma I wouldn’t be. She always would tell me that she don’t want me, she don’t understand why I am still in her life and things like that. There was a time when she told me we were going to the movies and that I could go, I thought that was the first step of her improving and starting to become the actually mother I wanted her to be. Believe it or not but once we got to the theater she told me I had to pay for myself knowing I didn’t have any money. I was 12 years old where did she think i was going to get money from. I had to sit outside of the theater in the cold while they went in to see the movie. That was the type of mother I had. I got tired of it and gave her her wish, I finally ran away.
When I ran away from home, I attempted to slit my wrists in a parking lot. Lucky for me, there was a lady that walked by me and stopped. She talked me out if doing this to myself and called the police for help.
I tell you all of this today to inform you guys that you will get up out of your struggles no matter what. As a young adult you have to know the value of yourself and understand that you are worth the world, even in your worst situations. You have to learn to love yourself because no one else can love you if you can’t love yourself first. I have learned that everything has happened for a reason and if it doesn’t go as plan you just don’t take that L. Look at it in a positive way, think of taking a L as a LESSON and NOT a LOSS. You will have a lot of people that is going to install different things into your head some being negative but you have to learn to be strong and get yourself up out that struggle . For those struggling with insecurities, low self esteem, and depression I just want you to know that you are beautiful, you can do anything you put your mind to, you are strong and you are worth the world. When you think about these things your mind automatically think its a girl going through these struggles but that is not true guys go through this also and I want y'all to know that this speech is for the guys out there too. And yes it comes off as if my focus is for the ones struggling with problems within themselves but it’s for everyone. Everyone is worth something and you may not be sure what that something is but believe me god will come thru keep ya head up and be blessed

Young People's Division
Who doesn’t like to travel? Being in the YPD, you get to travel to a lot of different cities, states, and even countries. The YPD stands for Young People’s Division, it is an organization for young Christian missionaries from ages 2 to 26.This organization is not just about traveling, but more importantly, it is about learning who God is and learning more about yourself.
We have mission projects. They are basically us providing for the less fortunate. Mission projects are very important, because it is giving back. I think of mission projects as a way of being blessed by blessing others. One of our meetings was held in Dallas, Texas. While there, we had a pajama party. In order to get into the party, we had to bring a pair of pajamas and a book. This project was to help deal with the fact that some children are never read bedtime stories and maybe don't even own a pair of pajamas. Also, we went to a nursing home and sat with the elders to talk to them and sing hymns. It was a great experience. It made me feel good inside that I got to make someone smile, especially elders that live in that type of environment. You can tell by their faces and by the way they kept thanking us that they enjoyed us and was thankful that we came. Every year we go away, we have to bring something whether it's soap, deodorant, or toys.
In Atlanta, we went to visit Martin Luther King’s grave site. This was very informational, and I really enjoyed my time at the grave site. We also went to the Ebenezer Baptist Church which is where Martin Luther King Jr. and Sr. preached. It felt good to be in the same place MLK once was. I felt like he was right there with me when we went in the church. Lastly, we had a moment of silence as we experienced visiting the Lorraine Motel where MLK was assassinated. This experience was a scary one. Before we arrived there, I really didn't know what to expect. I actually felt like at any moment there was going to be a shoot out. As I stood where Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, I honestly didn’t know how to feel. There was so many emotions flowing through my body but overall it was a nice museum.
My favorite place of all was Bermuda. In Bermuda, it was more of a fun trip than a church trip. We had a lot of free time to go sightseeing and do a lot of activities. Our usual annual meeting is just for the weekend. Friday night is opening service, Saturday morning is workshops then we have a couple hours of free time. We have a banquet on Saturday night and then we have a social which is just like a party. We have a closing service on Sunday morning. We stayed an extra day in Bermuda to do some fun activities. We had a clear bottom boat where you could see the fish and every other animal in the ocean. Also, there was jet skiing, zip lining and parasailing. I would love to go back to Bermuda and make many more memories. I really enjoyed my time in Bermuda.
The YPD is a great organization that teaches the young people of the AME church how to please God and others by helping those who are less fortunate. It provides us the opportunity to travel, meet new people, and have a good time while doing the work of missions. I am so glad that I am a part of this organization, and I am excited about what the future holds.
Printmaking Blog
This project was to basically bring creativity out of an element. My element was aluminum and the atomic number is 13. Aluminum is a chemical element that is s a silvery-white, soft, nonmagnetic and ductile metal in the boron group. It was discovered in the 1800s. Aluminum is used for many different things. Such as, kitchen utensils, cans, foils, etc.
As you see in the picture I chose to make a drawing of soda spilling out of a can. This was actually my second drawing and I chose this because I wanted something that looked cool and not plain like my first. The first on was aluminum foil unwrapping but I didn’t really like the way it came out. I thought of other things that had to do with aluminum and thought of a can. I did three drawings with a can and this was the one I liked best. The first can drawing was just a regular can and the second was a crushed up can.
The process of printmaking is very simple and easy. If you were to do this project you would have to first draw whatever you want on a paper, 4x6 if you want it to be the same size as mine. Then you would take some transfer paper and trace your drawing. After you trace you would have to trace one more time but this time it would be on like a piece of styrofoam and trace backwards. The reasoning for tracing backwards is so the print will come out the right way when you transfer it to paper. Now you would take the printing paint and roll it on the styrofoam. Last but not least, transfer it to paper. I enjoyed the exploring and drawing part of the project because I had the opportunity to learn something new but I would improve my actual drawing if I was to do this again.
Printmaking-Brielle Thompson
Relief printing appeared in Europe in the 15th century when printmaking was imported from the East. The development of printing continued with the spread of Buddhism from India to China; images and text were printed on paper from a single block.Woodcuts are the oldest method of printmaking. They were first developed in China in the 9th Century. Printmaking was invented after paper around AD 105. Printmaking originated in China. Printmaking is believed to have been invented by Daniel Hopfer. Intaglio is when the ink is pressed into the etched lines while wiping the remaining ink off the surface. Relief printing is when the ink sits on the surface and not in the grooves. The main differences between both the intaglio and the relief is that they are basically the opposite of each other. Printmaking is still being used centuries after it was invented. Graffiti is a type of printmaking and that is very popular in today’s life.
Brielle's Remix Slide
I learned that my slide wasn’t really a thought out design. It was just a few pictures slapped on a white background and there wasn’t actual design techniques on my slide. I made my pictures altogether and a quote in the middle so it could pop out. I chose colors with darker backgrounds because I didn’t want any pictures to stand out more than the other.
The research made me realize that everything had to be nice and clean because it is very noticable if not. Also, I had to change the font because it was a font middle schoolers used not real designers. I know that my slide was too plain before so I had to fix it to make the audience have interest in my new slide.
The first time I did my slide it wasn't really organized it was pictures all over the place and I thought i was doing something by slanting the pictures to make them all fit but that wasn't it at all. I tried to make my picture kind of bleed off my name but it looked tacky and sort of covered my name. The websites that i read from helped me improve my slide tremendously. I used Presentation Zen, Elements of Design Defines, and Slide Design LInk.
