Brian's Q4 ArtWorlk

Posted by Brian Torres in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 6:59 pm
This is definitely going to be my very last assignment ever submitted for Art. I've got to say I had way more fun than I thought I would end up having when I first started this course back in September. But going to this past 4th Quarter, we were basically given freedom to do what we wanted. The first week the class drew a picture from the Rodin Museum, and then the rest of the way we did 4 hour art pieces. I centered my 4 hour art pieces around the sport of baseball. Mainly because my first 4 hour art piece is a painting of the Reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper and my second 4 hour art piece is a picture of the SLA Rockets symbol with the Letters SLA, and a baseball inside the rocket and a baseball bat going through. I did this because I am on the baseball team. I had the most fun with the Bryce Harper painting because of all the detail that went into it, from making sure I illustrated where all the shading was to showing the wrinkles in his jersey. I just had a lot of fun with it. Overall I'm happy with the effort I put into my work. It wasn't the easiest stuff considering art isn't one of my hobbies, but I learned new things and it helped with what I did.

Brian Torres Capstone

Posted by Brian Torres in Capstone - Martin - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 11:15 pm

For my capstone, I worked with my church(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints aka the Mormon Church) to better improve the family history/ancestry program that is run through the church with a program known as Indexing. Indexing is a program that is used my members of the LDS church to further increase the database of names in the church's genealogy records so that things can be done in a more sacred setting. So, to further simplify what it is that I did, for my capstone, I worked with the genealogy group at my church to archive as many names as I could through the Indexing program into the LDS church's database. I chose to have my dad as my mentor, for several reasons, for one I knew that he would keep me in check through the whole process of completing the project and was always asking me for updates on how far along I was.

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 7.15.27 PM
What you see in the picture above is just one of the many files I went through and archived names and information that I could find based off of those documents. In the photo, we can tell that what I'm looking at is a draft registration card for someone who had just been drafted into the US Military to go on and enlist to fight in WWII. On the left side of the card, we see a good portion of personal info about the person(name, place of birth and current place of living, date of birth, etc.) and on the right side which is a little cut off is where we see more info describing his looks(race, height, weight, complexion, hair and eye color) and we also at the bottom of that part of the page which is cut off in the photo, we see the date that the person became a registered and enlisted member of the US Military.
The indexing program was and is a very tedious program to work with. Everytime you download a file to archive/index, you as the user are given a week to complete the indexing of that particular file before the file is removed from the user's account and returned to the database of files yet to be fully indexed so that someone else somewhere in the world can finish what you started.
Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 11.13.27 PM
Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 11.13.27 PM
What you see in the above picture is the screen the user is brought to when they log in. As you can see here, at the moment that the picture was taken, I was working on two different files(which are known as batches in the Indexing program), one thing that stands out is the due dates for each one, once the due date reaches three days or less before a batch is due, the file name will turn red signifying to you that time is running out and that you need to finish or get as much done before the batch expires and is returned to the system.

Is romantic love a myth?

Posted by Brian Torres in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 1:56 pm

Is romantic love real? Or is it a myth? There has always been the people that have fought against that statement. There have been those people that argue that romantic love is not a myth and that they try to use themselves and their relationships as examples. Throughout time, one thing that is always being argued is whether or not romantic love is a myth and if couples truly love each other.

In the movie, The 40 Year Old Virgin, the main character Andy Stitzer(played by Steve Carell) is a 40 year old man who has yet to really lose his virginity and may have yet to be in a relationship. At the beginning of the movie, he is playing poker with three of his friends and he decides to make up a story of him engaging in sexual intercourse with a woman. As he is telling the story his friends catch on and realize that he’s a virgin when he compares the breasts of his fake girlfriend to a bag of sand. His friends then decide that they will do everything in their power to help their friend(Andy) get laid by trying to hook him up with a bunch of women.

the_40-year-old_virgin_8.png

Comparatively, in The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio is a man who is currently single and he hears that a really rich father has forbidden his youngest of two daughters(Bianca) from getting married until the older daughter(Katherine) can find herself a husband. Petruchio really heard about this because several of his friends loved Bianca and wanted to marry her so Petruchio volunteers to marry Katherine. When he proposes the idea to Katherine’s father, he is told that he must win the love of Katherine.

Q2 BM Changing Worlds Essay

Posted by Brian Torres in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 12:57 pm

Analytical Essay:

After every war, or every deployment to war, there are always soldiers who come back with emotional damage being expected to mold back into society’s way of life. Changes such as the one Bartle was expected to go through when returning from war come in multiple phases. Soldiers are expected to come back and almost instantly get their normal lives together while adjusting to an environment that doesn’t have them constantly feeling like they are still deployed at war. As a result, they go through severe phases of depression and a lot of times, things like suicide is a popular option among these guys.

We saw this in chapter 7 when Bartle finally decided to go out with some friends for the first time since coming back from the war and leading up to that part of the book we learned pretty much Bartle’s daily routine after the war. We know that he is going through a depression and it all comes to a climax when he takes this small trip with some friends. He’s out with friends and decides to go out into the river while his friends are all still on shore not really noticing at first. As time goes on he kind of dozed off and ends up falling asleep face down in the water.

His friends then notice and see that their depressed friend Bartle is lying face down in the water and drag him out thinking that he has drowned which he probably did but that is not the point. The point that the writer of “The Yellow Birds” is trying to make that goes almost perfectly with the thesis of this essay is that soldiers coming home from war go through a tough time. It comes in a set of phases, now how many phases, nobody knows, it is different for almost every person coming from war. As stated in the thesis as well, a lot of times, this time of severe depression(PTSD) can and has a lot of times led to suicide.

Narrative Essay:

So sophomore year was by far my worst ever academic year. I wasn’t motivated to do anything my self esteem dropped severely and I felt like an outcast at home. Well as time went on between February 2014 and April 2014, people(my parents) started to take notice(mainly because my advisor noticed and pointed it out at the first narrative conference of the 2013-2014 year.) Anyways my parents realized that the same ways they treated my two younger siblings(my brother and my sister) wasn’t going to do a good job of helping my situation with school at all.

As a result, people like my parents and my brother and sister started to hang around me a little more thinking that spending time would heal all of my emotional wounds. So the school year finished, I barely passed World History and my parents decided not to really punish me for the bad grades but they put limits on all the things I could do like play video games. So summer started rolling through and things were starting to go back to normal until mid July.

It honestly felt and until that point of the day had gone on as any other day, wake up, get dressed, do chores, eat breakfast, play video games, eat lunch, play more video games with friends, but around like 6 or 7 pm, I paused the game just to stretch out and I pulled out my ipod touch and saw that I had a bunch of messages on the kik messenger app. I open it up to see what was happening and I see that one of my friends had sent me a text saying that a mutual friend of ours had run away from home and left a note saying he was going to kill himself.

I stopped everything and started talking to a bunch of friends and everyone is going crazy. I made up my mind right then and there that I was going to go help search for him. I knew my mom wasn’t going to help search and I figured that my dad who had been the Leader of my scout troop the last time that kid had come would also not hesitate to help search and that no matter how much begging I was going to have to do, I was going to help in the search any way that I can. My dad came home from his night shift at work and he must have heard about the situation on his way home because he was scrambling to change out of his police uniform so he could go search. Honestly my mom didn’t really want me to go and at first so did my dad. It took about ten minutes of back and forth arguing before I just stopped listening and changed out of my pajamas into regular clothes.

We searched and searched for hours and couldn’t find him. By the time we got back to the house, we could see the sun rising. We knew that there would be searches going on all week until they found him and though my parents didn’t really agree with me going to all the searches, I went and we didn’t find him. Keep in mind he went missing on a monday or tuesday I believe, and that saturday, my dad had worked during the day and when he got home, again just your normal day for a teen during the summer, we had friends over and I remember my dad pulling me and my little brother and sister aside and telling us that a body had been found in the area where we thought my friend had gone missing and that they were trying to confirm his identity through DNA.

I had the feeling inside when I heard the news that it was him and we had been told that his mom had indeed ID’d him through just seeing him as they wheeled him away.

Examining Bias Towards Weapons

Posted by Brian Torres in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 6:26 pm

Brian Torres Q2BM

Today in society, we constantly depict events that involve various kinds of weaponry as both good and bad things. We live in fear from these things knowing that any second, something like what you see on CNN and places like FOX News could basically happen right in your backyard. Throughout the past few years I have lived to see many events happen that have involved different kinds of weaponry. Some of them good, and some of them have been bad. Overall, I feel as though some of the biggest events that have happened have not only been bad, but have caused massive changes to happen in society.

One of those examples can be traced to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. I remember coming home from school and my mom was sitting in the living room with her eyes set on the tv. I turned my attention to the tv and all I saw was all this coverage happening on a shooting that had just happened earlier that day at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. A man named Adam Lanza had killed his mother, taken her rifle and started shooting at people inside the school. In total, 28 people were killed and 2 people were wounded. After the shooting, gun control laws were questioned and still are questioned today.

In a way, I feel as though the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting affected me in a way where I was more aware of my surroundings in the weeks following that day. I guess a reason to explain that would be because my parents and my aunt kind of instilled this idea in my head where I in a way became a little scared that it might happen to me or somewhere near me. So for like the next two weeks after this, I was kind of hesitant on taking any further public transportation because I thought something would happen even though I caught Regional Rail everyday on my way to school.

Another recent event that I remember was the 2012 Aurora shooting. I remember this clearly because at around 2 in the morning, a friend of mine texted me and my phone’s ringer(which I forgot to silence before I went to bed) went off and woke me up. I got up and looked at my phone. Out of nowhere I see this text saying that my friend went to see the midnight viewing of “The Dark Knight Rises” and his mom took him and left the theatre because a news report came on her phone saying that some dude in Colorado had gone and shot up a whole theatre room during a midnight viewing of that same movie.

The next day(well maybe about 7 hours after my friend woke me up with that text), everything was confirmed when I walked into my parents’ bedroom to see which one of them would take me to school. As I walked in, my mother was watching the news on the tv and the Aurora shooting was all over the news. Now I was upset because now I knew my mother(considering how much she exaggerates things) wouldn’t let me go the next day to see the movie.  I told my mom, “We are in Philly, that happened in Colorado, I highly doubt it will happen here.” I still didn’t get to go so I was pretty upset about that.

Honestly, when asked about which side of this issue I am on, I don’t really know what to say to them. Part of me is for open gun rights, but at the same time, the other part of me wants all this violence to end and for things like this don’t happen as easily and as often as they do. Already in this school year, since the school started in September, there have been 16 reported incidents in which a shooting has happened in or near a school in the US. What I find intriguing, is that the shootings that everyone knows about and that have a large amount of news coverage are the ones where a large amount of children/students die at or near the school.

What about the shootings where maybe 1 or 2 or maybe up to 5 people die and the media just puts it aside, and yet we live in a country where we have one of our main focuses set on stopping violence in and/or around schools. Why is it that a man can go into a school and kill 28 people and the news is all over it, but what about the shootings where the shooter kills/wounds up to maybe 6 people and the families are practically left to mourn on their own for the loss but a parent of a child at a place like Sandy Hook Elementary basically has the entire country mourning with them.

Don’t get me wrong, I, like every other American, was mourning the deaths of the children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but I just don’t think we should be kept in the dark about that stuff. I believe that when it happens, since it happens at or near a school building, no matter how many people get murdered, I believe the press should display the same amount of coverage over that as a shooting that they would describe as a mass murder.

So, to conclude this essay, I just want to say how much all this has affected me, it affected me a lot. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting made me feel scared to take any excess public transportation, so I started walking from Suburban Station to school and the 2012 Aurora shooting got me upset because it was because of that movie that I had to wait a while to see a movie I had been looking forward to for almost a year. Again, like I said earlier, throughout the past few years I have lived to see many events happen that have involved different kinds of weaponry. Some of them good, and some of them have been bad. Overall, I feel as though some of the biggest events that have happened have not only been bad, but have caused massive changes to happen in society.

Element Project

Posted by Brian Torres in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 11:45 am
Inquiry- I used inquiry on this project to find out how big the element that I was assigned was. i also used inquiry for this project so I could find out what it can be used for.

Research- During this project I did a lot of research to find out things about my element. For example, when we started, everyone had to find what they would draw as their element and we all went on searching things it can be used for.

Collaboration- A way that we all used collaboration in this project is that sometimes when we got stuck, we would ask others what they knew and we  would end up sharing information. In the end, all the  shared info really helped.

Presentation- In my opinion, this project was a difficult one. But what really helped was that some of us would present our drawings to our friends to see what they thought about our drawings, and it really helped.

Reflection- In the end, all I can say is that it ended pretty well. Yes, it could have gone by a little better.

Me llamo Brian Torres.

Recently, we have been learning how to make slides for presentations on keynote. As anyone who say the previous version of this slide, you can see that I took away a picture and added a picture to the slide. The reason I took away the picture from black ops 2 is because anyone who looks at it would already know that I play games, so they don't really need to know the specifics of exactly what game I play. In place of the pic of black ops 2, I added a picture of books because boks are something that occupy me in my spare time where I am not playing video games or watching tv.

Los meses de la año

Posted by Brian Torres in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 9:33 am
To know the months in español, you must first know the months of the year in english.  After that it gets pretty simple, you just learn how to pronounce them in spanish.
Enero  (january)    Febrero  (february)    Marzo  (march)    Abril  (april)    Mayo  (mayo)
Junio  (june)  Julio  (july)    Agosto  (august)    septiembre  (september)    octubre  (october)
noviembre  (november)    diciembre  (december)

Those are the months of the year, I personally had a lot of fun when learning this for the first time.  I hope you will have the same experience.

El Alfabeto y mas

Posted by Brian Torres in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 9:30 am
Hello, today we are going to learn the most basic piece of the spanish language.  Can anyone guess. That's right the alphabet.  In spanish, though, it is pronounced "El alfabeto."  It is actually very easy learn and it can be pretty fun.  Here are some really cool fun facts about the spanish language is ,
1. There are only 27 letters in the spanish language, where as there are only 26 in the english language.
2. Unlike the english alphabet, where all the letters are uppercase, all letters in the spanish alfabeto are lower-case letters
Here are the letters of the spanish language

a   (ah)                  i  (eee)                    p (peh)           x (equis)

b   (beh)                j   (hota)                 q (cooo)         y ( eee griega)

c   (seh)                 k  (kah)                   r (ereh)          z (seta)

d   (deh)                l   (eleh)                  s  (eseh)

e    (eh)                 m  (emeh)                t  (teh)

f    (efeh)               n   (eneh)                u  (oooo)

g    (hey)                ñ  (enyeh)               v  (beh)

h    (acheh)            o    (o)                     w (doble ve)

Something that most people looking at this list would notice is that the "v" in the spanish alfabeto is pronounced the same as the "b".  Thank you for listening to this wonderful lesson on the spanish alfabeto.
