Globalization in Philadelphia.

Posted by Catherine Young in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Here is my project.

What i found most challenging about this project was figuring out an idea for a picture. the first thing I did in order to get ideas for taking pictures was asking questions and looking at every detail of everything that I walked by. I also googled ideas as well. My favorite image would be the event that took place for the "Education" section because it was my capstone and it incorporated well within this project. The use of globalization in Philadelphia is very prevalent. I think it is more evident in the U.S because we started off as a country of different people from everywhere. We are a melting pot.

because I don't graduate in like 2 weeks.

Anyway I haven't posted in ages, so here's an update on my life.
I'm still madly in love with the guy Shaquor who is, an complete asshole.
I haven't talked to him in months but I guess that says a lot huh?

Anyway prom was fun. Ocean City was epic.
College is coming. I'm going to Howard or Arcadia.

Cursed out Howard to send me my FA packet.

I LOVE SHAQUOR.

What else?

oh yes, Grandma moved up here! I'm so happy about that.
That is all. SHAQUOR <33333

Is it me or this is like a twilight? This is.. weird.. strange.. Why are we celebrating the brutal killing of a man? The world is getting more and more demonic to me everyday. People don't realize that this is not good. This is the beginning of something terrible. Frankly, I just want to see me 21 birthday. There's a war in the city and there's a war in the Middle East. I'm scared. I don't understand and I just want to live a normal life not in fear.

A Day in the Life

Posted by Catherine Young in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 10:27 am
Life in Malawi for a 12yo boy or girl is simple. They are to wake up at dawn, help with warming water, meal and any other things needed around the home. If the do go to school they are to walk to their school house which is usually more then 1 mile away. School hours are normally from 8 to 3. when they come home they are to repeat the same steps from the morning. They also are to do their homework, pump water from the well or go into town for grocery shopping, bringing back in all the livestock and creating a fire for warmth.

Sunday & Today

Posted by Catherine Young on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 11:57 am
Sunday: I'm starting to feel better by this day. My Dad and I are going to make Kirk a stepping stone so it'll be easier to visit him in the backyard. I had a good day yesterday. I helped my mom clean the basement, changed the cat litter and then went to a fashion show with my bestfriend, Kelly, and her sisters at La Salle University. It was funny. I enjoyed myself. Oh, and I finally straightened my hair.

Today: OMG! I have an interview with an modeling agency today. Some lady scouted me out when I was on my way home downtown. They called me and scheduled at interview. I hope this goes well.  should probably get up and get my day started.

Out of Myself

Posted by Catherine Young on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 10:12 pm
Remember that post I wrote about wanting to get away from myself. Well here I am. I'm out of my mind, but now I'm looking at me externally. Don't try to understand me, you'll get frustrated. I barely understand myself.

I just want my dog back. I was so pissed off today at God. It poured down raining on my fucking dog. He's buried in the backyard and it just started pouring. Usually Kirk would be in the yard, doing something. Finding a new way out or digging up an old fried chicken bone.. and my mom would yell at one of us "BRING KIRK IN! IT'S POURING OUT THERE!", then one of us would run to go get Kirk and he would run in super excited, drenched. then he'd shake it off and get all of us wet, we'd get a towel dry him off and tell him to go home, he'd stare at us like we were crazy and we would know exactly what he wanted... a cookie. We'd give him some type of food and he'd take it and run to my brothers room into his dog house.

That was routine. And now it's gone. There's no point in going int he backyard anymore. Kirk's gone. It's still unreal. I WANT MY FUCKING DOG BACK. I love you Doobie, world's #1 dog.

Posted by Catherine Young on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 8:57 am
Yesterday I found out my dog that I had for 12 years, died. He had chronic heart failure and the doctor said that there was nothing we could do.

He was family. Everybody is hurting. His name is Captain James T. Kirk. Kirk for short. I'm angry. I really loved that dog. It's not fair. I have a whole new perspective on life.

I want my dog back.

I wish I could go back in time and change a few things. Fuck forgetting the past. You can't just "forget", that's not even human nature. I mean come on, it still exists, it's still real, cause you feel it.

I stayed home today to catch up on some work. To be honest, I could really care less about school, prom & graduation. I just want to get away, and be any place but here. Not here as in Philadelphia or even my room. Just.. out of my mind, out of me. I think that's why I travel so much.

But even in my travels my minds still stuck in the past. I myself, won't allow myself to get away and it's not even my fault. Are you following? Like when I went to Africa, I still thought about home & past experiences- 1000 miles away. I didn't want to, but I couldn't help it.

I just wish I had a grip, a grip on something. Everything about life is too causal now. Sex, conversation, relationships, mind control. Everything is not what it use to be. Everybody can have anything. And that shouldn't be. Nothing is sacred. Females are too loose, males just take, take, take.

I hope I don't sound crazy, because I'm not. I just want to get out of my mind.

Peruuu & North Koreaaa

Posted by Catherine Young in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 2:38 pm
Here is where you can learn about the differences and similarities of Peru & North Korea.

For the benchmark I chose to do Peru and North Korea. Peru is located in South America and North Korea in South East Asia. The process it took was a long one. I thought that it would be a little easier then it was but I decided to go above and beyond and go a little more in to detail then I originally thought I would have to. The way I did my 5 point framework was pretty straight forward. I organized it in a way so that would be easy to follow and then graded both the countries in the end to summarize the entire project. If I could change anything I wouldn't. It was easy just a lot of research.

a bittersweet memory just popped up.

once when my ex-boyfriend and I were at his house, we got into an argument. He was sitting on one end of the bed and I on the other. We weren't talking. I was sitting on his pillow. To silently get revenge for him cursing me out I was going to slip out a silent but deadly one- on his pillow. WRONG. It came out loud and bold. He looked at me. I looked at him.

"Get the fuck out."
"I love you."
"Amira, get out yo"
"I'm sorry Pooohhhhh, it was suppose to be silent!"

*crickets

(I turn to get up, he tackles me)

"I love your lil stank ass"
"I love you too, gimme kiss"

being a female.

Posted by Catherine Young in Storytelling - Chase on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 4:55 pm
I was wondering why being a female was so fucking hard.
We have to deal with everything x10 PLUS other things on top of the normal things.

- Why does it take so long to get over someone?
- Why are emotions for us more in depth then most guys?
- Why do I have a period?
- Why do I have to give birth with all that pain?
- Why do I break out with random pimples when two days ago I was glowing radiantly?
- Why one minute I love my mom then I hate her for reasons I don't even know?
- Why do I cry when watching The Notebook?
- Why do I read my love horoscope, hoping one day it's actually accurate?
- Why am I looking into the problems of being a female?
- Why did Dumboldore die in Harry Potter?!
- Why in 10 minutes will I feel differently?
- Why do I care about everything?
- Why the fuck do I watch Lifetime and eat icecream when I'm sad?
- WHY DID THEY KILL DOBBBY IN HARRY POTTER!?

Benchmark

Posted by Catherine Young in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 7:23 pm
Link to my Benchmark

The way I went about deciding what were my items were going to be was based on what I do everyday. It wasn’t hard figuring our what impacts my life because I thought about what I do and what governmental links it has. After choosing my twelve topics, finding out information was not hard at all. This process what not hard at all. The only thing that seemed to be hard was finding out ways that the topics were negative when they are made to be positive. After reviewing all the topics and seeing how they directly affect my life I noticed that as I get older this will effect me more along with other laws as well. Because I am a minor today it will be less likely that more laws apply to me instead of for me. For example, I am my parents responsibility until I turn 18.

Blog Post 5

Sending out emails to me is not effective. I would have to send out hundreds of emails to people who would not have the time to personally message me back in time to finish this project or not knowing if the person that replies to it is actually the person written to. Instead I would like to create a 30 second PSA or commercial with people from all ages and race groups that have been convicted served their time but cannot vote to say "I made a mistake but Ive changed" with a quick profile of the person running by on the screen with their age, race, what they did and how long ago.

After making this video I would then:

  • Publish on a public blogging site.
  • Share the link with a News Station.
  • Publish on SLA's blogging site.
  • Send the link to the Washington Post
  • Send the link to the congressman who introduced the law.

Reflection:

Although I hope to still do this video, it was very hard to find people that would actually be comfortable talking about that they did, especially those who are able or not able to vote today. Instead I took their stories and anonymously wrote a word document that expressed how they felt about the bill and the fact they were not allowed to vote. There were two people who I interviewed and both stories were completely different. Attached is the google doc link.

Reflection of Project

Posted by Catherine Young in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 12:27 pm
David Buckholtz and I decided to do our project of filing for a divorce, In order to get a divorce in some cases you must be able to show proof of separation for two years in others you are allowed to file for divorce with the deposit of $277. Once the paperwork has been filed a court date will be set that would then allow equal divisions of both parties. The process consisted of finding the information that would allow us to see how the process would take place in PA. It was not hard to find seeing that David knew a person that would be able to get us the paperwork for free. The paperwork was straight forward, asking questions about the length of the marriage, money divisions, children division etc. There is nothing that I would change, all the information was easy to find and show in flow chart form. The system is probably complicated to make sure that the parties included are serious about the decision they are making.

Democracy Restoration Act

Posted by Catherine Young in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 7:39 pm

My lobbying assignment has much to do with the federal law making and a federal law would have to be made for my bill to become effective. After researching for the past three months it is evident that their is not a particular person against this law or their is not a particular person for this law. It is being handled on a schedule that would allow constant revising and opinions to be involved in the decision making.

As the process of this bill continues a person who may have been for the law may not be in another setting due to revisions made.

Idea:

Sending out emails to me is not effective. I would have to send out hundreds of emails to people who would not have the time to personally message me back in time to finish this project or not knowing if the person that replies to it is actually the person written to. Voting Rights of Felons

Posted by Catherine Young in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 9:28 am

What is the status of your issue at the legislature? Is this a "good" year?

The "Democracy Restoration Act" best year was 2009. it was introduced around a time where not much on law and bill passing was a major concern. During 2009 it went through the process of being introduced and then it eventually moved to going through The House who altered. This year there ha not been much talk about the bill and things haven't been done with it. We see that the process begins to die down after the Health Care Reform bill came into play in March of 2010. The officials that were major players in passing the bill became more concerned with The Health Care Reform because it was such a large bill that affected everyone and not just a particular group of Americans. There is not much on public support that i have seen but that does not mean that it isn't there. I'm almost positive that ex felons are very supportive of this bill.

Who is essential to the outcome?

People that are essential to the outcome are ex-felons who have either served their time, off parole or probation. This law is a federal/national bill or law the entire executive and legislative branch is involved with changes, passing and veto's.

Who else is working on this?

No one else is the class is working on this topic. Therefore I cannot coordinate.

Who can you influence?

For this bill the influence has to be in the communities. The government has to see changes in the behavior of the ex-felons because it is vital to the decision making. You can only influence the people to prove that they have learned their lesson through the process of incarnation.

What is the time frame?

There is not set time frame for this bill. My only concern is that because there will always be felons and cons and people that are making the change over from being a felon to an ex-felon this process will be looked over as something that can be changed later. My concern is that the bill will be overseen and looked at as not relevant. The scary reality of this is that everyday people are being convicted of a crime for minor things that they may have been mistaken and because of stricter laws. Adults that have made mistakes when younger are still unable to vote when they could be completely "civilized" now. To me this is one of the most important, concerning bills of the 21st century.

When are key dates - meetings, committee hearings, deadlines, etc.

- Hearing on: H.R. 3335, the "Democracy Restoration Act of 2009"
Tuesday 3/16/2010 - 2:00 p.m.
2141 Rayburn House Office Building
Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties

Voting Day

Posted by Catherine Young in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 9:31 pm
Today I could not go to my local voting place because I was called into work, so on my way to work I took a picture of a voting building located downtown. On the job, I interviewed my co-worker Saesha. Who is 18 years of age and was voting for the first time.

Question: What motivated you to come out and vote?
Answer: I just felt like for once my voice was heard, I did it because I knew that my other peers would as well.

Question: What would you like to see changed in our political system?
Answer: Well ever since I was younger, I've noticed a lot of bickering and back and forth among candidates. I would like to see more information about that we stand for as a government and what out views are instead of I guess attacking the other runner.

Question: Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?
Answer: Ummm, naw.

Question: Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning?
Answer: I would have to say T.V and around my home. I live in a suburban setting so people tend to express their vote on their front laws on in their windows.

Question: What was the most memorable campaign ad that you have encountered?
Answer: I'm not sure who the candidate that was running, but all I remember was constant bashing of the other runner. In the entire 30 second ad they NEVER, I mean like talked about their political views. Just what the other person was doing, which was pointless.

Question: What impact do you feel your vote will have on the election?
Answer: I mean every vote counts because it's apart of a large group of other votes. I can't say if my vote will make or break it but I feel like it counts because I encouraged my friends to want to do it to. So more people were apart of it because of me.
