Greta Haskell Capstone

Posted by Greta Haskell in Capstone - Pahomov - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 11:56 am

For my capstone I wrote a blog about gap years. The blog is ongoing so it will never be “finished” but I am happy with how it stands. In the beginning of the year I was going to build my portfolio by styling people and taking their pictures, because I want to be a fashion merchandising major. But my whole year was revolving around my gap year so I decided to change my plan. My gap year and gap years in general, are something I am super passionate about, so I decided to write a gap year to track my progress. I interviewed people about their gap years and wrote posts with my tips and my stories. My plans are to keep updating it while I am away so that people from home can read about it. I am also going to send my link to Mrs. Hirschfield so she can post it on the college news blog.

Here is my blog.

My bibliography now has nothing to do with my capstone, but here it is:

1. Bolton, Andrew. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2011. Print.

This book is my main source of creativity for my project. As I explained to my advisors in my Teach your Passion project, Alexander McQueen is my favorite fashion designer and he was the biggest influence on me wanting to have a career in the fashion world. The book has pictures and written pieces about McQueen that I am going to reference in the backstory of my capstone. I selected this source because of the importance it plays in my life and how it has shaped my thinking of my future. It is a reliable source being a book published by the MET. I also attended the exhibit where I bought the book after McQueen died which really influenced me.

2. Borecka, Natalia. "25 Photoshoot Ideas to Inspire Your Next Editorial." Lone Wolf. N.p., 10 Mar. 2014. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

I chose this source because it will serve as inspiration. It gives me a short description about a photographer and their style of photography and by knowing that I can look at their photos and decide how I want mine to look. After deciding that I can learn how to take photos like theirs. It also describes different types of of interesting ways to take photos. There are lots of ideas for me to consider, this source is a good beginning point for my project and my creative aspect.

3. Digital-Photography.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

This source is good because it has a lot of articles for me to learn about how to use the flash on the camera. It also has camera reviews and examples of how photos will look when using different flash. This source will be good for reference if I can not get help from Mr. Herman. I will most likely have to take photos alone or teach my helpers how to do what they need to help me with. This will be good because I will need to be an expert about how to use the camera and all the equipment when I take the pictures.

4. Gelardi, Piera, and Christene Barberich. Refinery29: Style Stalking. N.p.: Potter Style, 2014. Print.

This book is also super useful for my project because it includes hundreds of styling tips. This will be really helpful because even though I can style people I want to show my knowledge of fashion, silhouettes, accessories, etc. This book will give me tips on how to style people with pieces or combinations that I wouldn’t think of without a little inspiration. It tells you how to mix patterns, wear clothes you wouldn’t pick on your first instinct and lots of other interesting points. When I received the book as a gift I was excited to read it and pick up some tips. This will be a very useful and reputable source for my project.

5. Herman, Douglas. "Mentor Meeting." Personal interview. 01 Feb. 2016.

Mr. Herman is my mentor and will be the backbone to my project. I have never taken photography class, only digital video so he is giving me the basics of the class during my free periods. He is also going to help me learn about photoshop so that I can edit my pictures. He is extremely knowledgeable and i know i can ask him a question whenever I need to. Another great thing he did for me was add me into the photography course on canvas so that if there is ever a time where I can’t reach him I can look at the sources on there and use them to help me.

6. Horan, Betsy. "Indelible Images From a Fashion Photography Icon." The New York Times. The New York Times, 03 Feb. 2016. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

This source takes a deep look at one specific photographer and his style of taking photos. This is good for me because he has shot many different styles, not just fashion. Seeing these photos is good because I can learn a brief overview of the photographer and also see his style and use it as inspiration. There are a lot of different perspectives for me to look at which will hopefully give me some diversity in my photographs. I especially like the photo of the Rolling Stones, I like the lighting and the way that every member of the band can be seen but they are all different distances away so it gives the photo very good depth.

7. "How to Become a Fashion Photographer | FASHION NET." Fashionnet. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

This is a very professional source with a lot of tips and information to have good fashion photography. There are a few paragraphs about each topic, not all topics are relevant to me but the one that is most relevant to me is “Having a Portfolio”, as this is basically my capstone. This source is also helpful because they listed their sources at the bottom of the article, so I used a few of their sources to find helpful ones to me. This source has good info about how my portfolio should look, such as sizes of images and preferred lighting.

8. Mowery, Allen. "How To Get the 'Terry Richardson Look' and Shoot Like a Fashion Pro with Minimal Gear." DIY Photography. N.p., 18 Aug. 2015. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

I chose this source because Terry Richardson is one of the most famous and influential fashion photographers in the fashion industry. The way he photographs is very different and I like how his photographs look. It will probably be hard for me to achieve this look because I am not that experienced as a photographer but with a combination of Mr. Herman’s help and this source’s tips I can at least try. His look is very bright and sharp and kind of crazy. I would have to work out if my styling would look good with this style of photography. It also tells me the gear to use and how to achieve the look with not too many props or gear.

9. "PhotoForum on the Internet." School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology, n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <https://people.rit.edu/andpph/pf-faq.html>.

This source is amazing because it has a huge list of any photography topic you can think of. I am planning on using this source to help answer any questions I have if I don’t have Mr. Herman’s help. There are pdfs and links to hundreds of tutorials and tips of how to use cameras and photoshop. The thing I will need the most help with is the flash and how to use a flash and reflectors that are not attached to the camera. I will be able to find a lot of help with that on this website. This was a website that was linked off of Fashionnet.

10. School of Photography. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

This source is a good source for any questions I have. It is a free source with tutorials, tips and and links for me to use. I can search any topic and find some useful articles about it. On the homepage there are links that I can click on to lead me to a number of helpful and informational articles. There are also videos about how to use equipment. I think this source will be extremely helpful because of the amount of information on the site. It is called school of photography, so it should help teach me what I need to know.

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 53

Posted by Greta Haskell in Being Human - Giknis - B on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 9:53 pm
I added a personal touch of the Man's thoughts to the book to help readers understand some of his rational and decision making further along in the book, and also to get a little more connected to the character.

Creative Piece:

...wished them godspeed till they were gone. He never heard them again.

The Man often thought about that day. It was the last day he remembered hope. He never told the Boy about the birds for the fear he might be even more disappointed with the everygrey world. Where did the birds go? Where they even there in the first place or did he just imagine them. He thought the birds must be with the Woman. Somewhere warm and peaceful. Or was he wrong? He didn’t know what to think. He wished the birds were a message from God. Something to tell them they were all right, that everything would one day be good. If the birds could survive that far so could they. Yet they hadn’t seen a bird since. He thought their raspy calls could be the Woman calling out to them. But he never heard that sound anymore so was it just goodbye? If God was really there why would he taunt them like this, thought the man. He liked to sit and think about it but he couldn’t think too hard as to alarm the boy. The birds were just the fingertips of God dragging all the color out of the sky as he waved so long for the last time.

Rationale:

In this scene you get to see a hidden, deeper side of the Man. You can see emotions and deep thought from him and his curiosity with religion. I chose to place this piece in this section of the book because symbolism in this book was huge and when I read about the birds flying over and the man never seeing them again it made me think about how birds were literally the highest beings as they could fly, they were closest to God. That made me think that the birds represented God’s presence, or anti-presence in the book. I chose the theme of God and religion because I wanted to hint at the question that I asked myself the most while reading this book. “Why are they still going?” I wanted to see inside of the Man’s head and see how he felt about this hard journey and if there was still positivity in his head. I think that religion was a quiet but pushing force in why the Man tried so hard to keep himself and the Boy alive. I had the Man reflect on this experience because I wanted to leave the readers with something to think about for the rest of the book because McCarthy never really addresses this subject again and I think it is more helpful to understand some of the Man’s future decisions in the book. Another question to me was “Is there a God?” referring to the Man. So I wanted to answer that so that the reader could get a good look into the Man and his past personality. In my creative piece I used the word “evergrey” as a touch to their surroundings. They are in the woods, surrounded by trees that used to be green but are no longer. Now everything is dull and grey so instead of “evergreen” like an evergreen tree I changed it to evergrey as a sense that the world around them and likely never changing, as evergreen trees are always green. The reason I chose this passage to be about the man is because The man is the one who speculates the most about God in the book so I think it is appropriate that these be his thoughts.

Q1 Benchmark: Contemporary Kafkaesque

Cultural Fabric

Isabella and I picked social media because we felt that it has a huge impact on today's society. Especially at SLA, where we are allowed to use our phones and computers. We wanted to see how the use of technology has impacted the environment around us and showcase how it varies from person to person. From old to young, people of all ages use the internet and forms of social media, so how is their usage different and what are their feelings on the topic? That was one of the many questions we wanted to tackle in the project. After creating the piece of literature, the twitter, it showed me how desperate some people are to get attention, which is what we focused on in our cultural fabric. It really interested me that there were so many things in real life that we could relate this phenomenon to because the internet "celebrities" of todays lives' can be viewed as very fake and unrealistic.

Conquest is Not Just Romantic

Conquest is Not Just Romantic

Comparing “Mamma Mia!” to “The Taming of the Shrew”

In “The Taming of the Shrew”, many men are in love with Baptista’s daughters and will do about anything to get them as their wives. They are suitors in the romantic sense, but in “Mamma Mia!” Sophie has three possible dads and when they all find out they could be the father they become suitors in the paternal sense, trying to woo Sophie by telling her how they would treat their daughters if they had one and wanting to “win” the spot of father by walking her down the aisle at her wedding. Competition for a woman's attention and affection still exists hundreds of years later, but now in a more modern sense of something other than romantic.

“Say she rail; why, I'll tell her plain

She sings as sweetly as a nightingale.

Say that she frown; I'll say she looks as clear

As morning roses newly wash'd with dew.

Say she be mute and will not speak a word;

Then I'll commend her volubility,

and say she uttereth piercing eloquence.”

In this scene Petruchio is telling his friend his plan to woo Katherine and get her to fall in love with him so that she will marry him. He thinks that by telling Katherine how great she is he will win her affection and will be able to claim her as his. Even this long ago men had little schemes to “win” the women of the time.

Similarly in “Mamma Mia!” Sophie’s potential dads have their own ways of making them seem special like they would be the best dad by winning the prize of walking her down the aisle.

Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 6.01.06 PM.png

In this scene from “Mamma Mia!” Sophie talks to one of the potential dads, Harry. She asks him if he has any children of his own and he says no but he would have loved to have a daughter like Sophie and would have spoiled her rotten. As Harry stays on the island he starts to realize that Sophie might be his daughter and ultimately decides that by treating her like this she might believe he is the one. Like Petruchio, Harry wants to “woo” Sophie into thinking he is the best candidate and later tells her that he wants to walk her down the aisle. In this generation people go on quests for things other than romantic love, just like how Harry is on a quest for paternal love.

“Of all thy suitors, here I charge thee, tell

Whom thou lovest best: see thou dissemble not.”

(Act 2, Scene 2, 1)

In this scene Katherine is talking to Bianca about her suitors asking her who she loves the most. Bianca says no one because she is not technically allowed to be involved with boys until Katherine gets married. Bianca and Katherine both know that all the suitors are obsessed with her but if the time comes, she can only choose one. Katherine may be trying to help her but she is also showing how all of the men could be happy with Bianca even if they don't know her. They would all take her if they could.

At the end of “Mamma Mia!” all of the dads stand up and say how happy they would be to be Sophie’s dad even if all three of them have to share her, it would be a privilege.

Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 6.58.44 PM.png

In this scene in the movie the dads are behaving a bit like Bianca’s suitors in the sense that they would all be happy to have Sophie as their daughter. In the “Shrew”, they want Bianca as their wife but these men want Sophie as their daughter. They’ve all tried to woo her but in the end they are all happy to have Sophie as their daughter and are willing to share. Unlike the “Shrew”, the suitors can't really share a wife, so one of them must get her in the end.

Society has seen many changes over time but here society has just progressed and broadened. Rather than seeing romantic love as the only thing to try to get people try for more things like parental relationships, as seen in “Mamma Mia!”. In “Shrew” romantic love seems the only thing that is important to the men, now people have broader horizons and see that other things can be just as worthy.

Analytical Essay:

Like many of the characters in Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, Tim has a special and very different view on coping. Everyone has their own way of coping and Tim’s is unique, he writes and sometimes has a bad approach and “copes” with anger instead. As the world around them changes, individuals find their own way to cope with what it going on around them.

In the beginning of the book Tim shares a story he has never told anyone else before, making it an intimate experience for the reader. This in itself is a way to cope for him but much later than he should have. He tells the readers about how when he found out that he was being drafted for the war he got so upset about it he ran away to Canada and couldn't decide if he should say and be happy or go to war and be a “hero”. Later in an interview Tim reveals the whole story was a lie saying, “I never went to the Rainy River to decide whether or not to go to Viet-nam. It's a lie...To get at a higher, nobler truth, I tell a big lie.” He told the story so that he could get people to feel how he felt with a “noble” lie. It was a way of coping for Tim so that when he came back from the war he could use his imagination to take him away from the sad reality and put himself in a place where he felt heroic and brave, instead of feeling guilt from lying he felt the pleasure of knowing he did something right.

The events that could have harmed Tim were clearly hard to go through. Tim wants his readers to be in the same mindset as him and feel that same feelings he went through to know how he really felt at that time and place in the war. He describes the experience saying,  “...you're not human anymore. You're a shadow. You slip out of your own skin, like molting, shedding your own history and your own future, leaving behind everything you ever were or wanted to believed in. You know you're about to die. And it's not a movie and you aren't a hero and all you can do is whimper and wait.” Tim does not always have a positive approach to coping. He sometimes deals with the war by convincing himself and acknowledging that he has no feelings anymore and he just has to go through with it. This could damage him more in the long run if he is constantly thinking this way, that is why it is good that he has writing as an outlet.

Near the end of the book Tim tells the readers about his logic when writing. He has a very dreamlike state of mind when writing and telling stories and it helps him to deal with the events which might be traumatic. He concludes, “The thing about a story is that you dream it as you tell it, hoping that others might then dream along with you, and in this way memory and imagination and language combine to make spirits in the head. There is the illusion of aliveness.” p. 230 To cope with his changed, traumatic, environment, Tim tells stories which give him a small amount of happiness when he is depressed and scared from the war. When he tells a story he can sort of leave his body and not have to deal with the bad parts of the war for a moment.

Everyone has a different way of coping, some simple, some more extreme. In Tim O’Brien’s case he takes it to the extreme, showing how people can have different approaches. When people notice the world changing around them they stress and find different ways to cope and change themselves to better themselves in the changing world.

Narrative Essay:

When I was little I was always off in my own little imaginary world. I had imaginary friends, I would build fairy houses and I always sang, I still do. One thing my parents always told me was that when I was little I would always sing to myself especially when I was excited or nervous about something. I would just make up little melodies and hum or sing. They thought it was just something cute but now that I’m older and I am constantly singing I looked back on it a little and realized that it is my coping mechanism.

My sister is born on Halloween so my other sister and I spent Halloween with my grandma that year. I was always excited because I loved to dress up all the time as a little kid but now I was in a new neighborhood and I didn't know what I was in for. That night we walked over to my aunts house and we were getting ready to go trick or treating. My sister and I were walking a bit ahead and my grandma noticed that I was singing a little song. I was just too excited that I couldn't hold it in. I was dressed as a dinosaur and I would go up to houses and roar! Then I would get my candy and carry on singing. They always make fun of me for it now.

Now that I’m older I listen to music constantly especially in the car. I can’t stand quiet car rides. Whenever there is music I am singing. Everyone in my family knows that my secret talent is remembering song lyrics, I can listen to a song once or twice and the next time I hear it I’m belting along. I made the connection as I was writing this. When I was little I would cope with things that were different or out of my comfort zone by singing and now I still do. Whenever I do homework I listen to music because it calms me down and when I am driving I listen and sing along. My mom thinks I shouldn’t because it will distract me but honestly, it helps me concentrate.

I don’t know why music has always helped me I guess it just goes back to when I was a baby doing music classes and dance classes and just never losing it since. I never really have found an answer as to why I started this coping mechanism but I feel that if I was singing I was distracting myself from things that scared me and worried me and took me off into my own little world to deal with it.

The Fashion Industry

Posted by Greta Haskell in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 1:15 pm
“Degrading, disgusting, and demeaning: I'm ashamed of modern women's magazines”, “Teen fashion model Georgina got so thin her organs were failing. But fashion designers still queued up to book her.” Lots of people gag in disgust when hearing news about the fashion industry. Many people think that the industry is only for skinny, rich people who think that beauty is defined by a thin body and long flowing hair. However, is is much more than it seems. Though the fashion industry may be seen in a negative light, it is actually sending many good messages to young women around the world. In the real world, the fashion industry provides freedom and inspiration for young women, and allows them to feel confident about themselves.

One of the biggest misconceptions that people have about the fashion industry is that  everyone is unhealthy and stick thin. In fact, modeling trends change every season and the trend of unhealthy, stick thin models is over. The trend of healthy, “normal” looking models is in and seems to be staying. Though it may have been true before, the industry is moving past scary standards and is starting to promote health to it's models and young women everywhere. In an article from The New York Times, the author talks about being inspired at Madrid Fashion week after hearing news about its models. She says “It has been a lot of fun – and educational and, actually, inspiring – to watch the fallout from Madrid’s decision to ban hyper-skinny models from its formerly much-overlooked Fashion Week.” People around the world are starting to take action and seeing how what they present affects other people. They have realized that women should be seen as beautiful and healthy not sickly and stick thin. The law in Madrid was a big inspiring step to women and the fashion industry because it shows that every woman is beautiful and you don’t have to conform to old beauty standards to be special. The law is bringing out a big body positive vibe in many people.

An even bigger step to promote health and acceptance of all body types was recently in 2014. Many young girls believe that they can not fulfil their dreams of being part of the fashion industry because of their “bigger” size. This year a new trend has arisen, Full Figured Fashion week. The author shares her great experience at the show saying “The guests are more racially diverse—there were plenty of white people, but much of the crowd was African-American and Latino—and they come in every shape and size: short women with slim waists and enormous breasts, tall women with narrow shoulders and thick torsos, round women, pear-shaped women, and a few mesmerized men. The atmosphere is celebratory, rather than cutthroat.” This event really shows that anyone can be accepted in the fashion industry. You don't have to be six feet tall and weigh 115 pounds to fit in. People can be who they want to be and still make it big time in the fashion industry. This kind of event can inspire so many people, especially young girls, to do what they love no matter what they look like.

Many women want to feel empowered and feel good about themselves by doing something like starting their own business. In 2002, 57.4% of all businesses were owned by men, making it truly, a mans world. One big inspiration to women in the business world is a fashion designer named Tory Burch, who started a foundation to help women start their own small businesses. The foundation provides many benefits for women, “Through the Tory Burch Foundation Fund, Accion provides microloans ranging from $500 to $50,000 while the Tory Burch Foundation provides mentoring and entrepreneurial education opportunities.” The Tory Burch foundation is one of many foundations to promote women and business in the fashion industry; others include the Fashion Empowering Women foundation and mentoring from people such as Rachel Ray. When the women get this opportunity they are being believed in and being told they can put what they sat their minds to and this is a great push. This shows that the fashion industry wants to inspire and help women pursue their dreams.

Many people think that the fashion industry is a bad place that is taboo and degrading to women. Those people are the ones that do not see how the fashion industry is really affecting the world. The fashion industry is a place where women can come to be inspired, supported, and accepted. The fashion industry can support women, how they look, and their dreams. If fashion critics stopped to think about it, they would realize that the fashion industry is not just about money and image, but inspiration and confidence as well.

Bias of the Justice System

Posted by Greta Haskell in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 11:33 am

Greta Haskell

After watching “The Central Park Five”, “West of Memphis” and “A Thin Blue Line” I have come to a conclusion; the court system has a huge bias against young males especially African Americans. In all of the documentaries young men are convicted for crimes they didn't commit simply because the police are too lazy and ignorant to find out what really happened. The justice system only hears what they want to hear and if they have to manipulate and lie to get what they want, they will.

While watching these documentaries one thing in particular stuck out, the police seemed selfish. No matter what anyone else wanted, they just wanted to hear what they thought was right and get it over with. If someone brought up a different option suggesting that they were wrong or they had the wrong person, they would get angry and find a way to make their decision correct.

The justice system’s bias is what caused so many wrongs and injustices. If it's called the system of justice why is so much going wrong? Something else that I thought of reminded me of some of the things we did in class. Most of the people such as the police, the judges, and the jury were white upper middle class males. As we saw in class we usually have a bias towards people like ourselves. If the people they were trying to put in jail were different than them, they would find a way to have a bias against them just because they were different.

In the Central Park Five is when the bias stood out to me the most, most if not all of the people involved in the case were white except for the young men who were being charged with the murder. The police arrested them simply because they wanted to get someone and those boys were the easiest to arrest. It really shows that the police were too lazy to try and find who really did it just because they wanted to lock someone up.

While watching these documentaries I really got angry and I guess I discovered a new bias of my own. I feel that people should have their rights and police and other workers should do their absolute best job to see if the person is guilty or not. Imagine being locked in jail for five or even more years of your life that you can never get back for something that you had no part in. That has to be the worst thing I can imagine and I would wish it on nobody. I kind of thought of going into the justice system when I got older, but that would be a heavy load to bear so I decided against it.

Bias is a subconscious decision that can't be controlled but it can be so serious that it can change someones life forever. This really shows that peoples bias can sometimes be even more important than fact. There are a few exceptions but overall people stick with what they believe and subconsciously want to believe. People are not always fair but sometimes it's hard to change because we can't really do anything about it.

Greta Haskell Short Story

Posted by Greta Haskell in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 12:33 pm

“I don't want to move! This is so stupid I don't care what you say, I’m staying here with my friends. I'm almost eighteen I can take care of myself!” I don't like yelling at my parents, but this is an exception. They want me to move to Denmark. Sure, Denmark is pretty and I guess it would be fun for like, tourists but I don't want to move there! Permanently. I don't speak Danish. Or German. Or anything close. I'm a seventeen year old white girl. I speak english and spoiled brat on occasion. Now is one of those times.

I don't want to sound spoiled but I just can't go there. I have plans for college, I have friends, I have a boyfriend, I just got my drivers license and a car. There's just too much here for me to leave. I can't just pack up my life and bring everything with me.

The worst thing about moving is that my parents speak Dutch but never bothered to teach me when I was little because they thought “It would never be useful”. Well guess what? They were wrong. Now i'm going to be the only one in this stupid country who can't speak their language and everyone is going to laugh at me.

After a long, worthless fight with mom and dad, I didn’t get my way. I was moving to Denmark and they didn't care what I said. They tried to compromise with me as much as they could but nothing can make me feel better. “We’ll move your car by boat! We’ll homeschool you!” But I don't want any of that. I want to be a normal teenager, in America.

After a month of saying goodbye to my friends and a couple of failed Dutch lessons, it's time to get on the plane for Denmark. After a ten hour flight we finally arrived. The minute we stepped out of the plane I felt out of place. The airport employees were greeting me in their weird language that I didn’t understand. Even my parents started babbling in Dutch. I felt like the smallest person in the world.

It was like a totally different world. There was different fashion, different smells, and obviously, the different language. “Mom, I’m really hungry.” I tried to tell my mom but she wasn't listening, she was too busy soaking up all the amazing sights. “Mom!” I yelled louder.

“Oh, sorry sweetie. I didn't hear you the first time. What did you need?” she said. I could tell she was not too enthusiastic though.

‘“I’m hungry.” I was annoyed but I just wanted to get some food in my stomach.

“Oh lets go to that hot dog cart over there!” my mom always talked about how good the hotdogs in Denmark are so good. I guess it can’t be any worse than an american one. Mom and dad had to order for me because I obviously couldn’t read the menu. I felt like a three year old. I was so oblivious to what was going on around me. I couldn’t understand anyone, speak to anyone or get any of my points across. I really felt like an idiot.

In america I could have ordered whatever I wanted. I would have no trouble at all. I didn't even like what mom and dad got me. It was gross so I just gave it to dad. We got into a taxi to take us to our new house. I didn't even know what it looked like yet.

We pulled up in front of a little row house. It was cute I guess but I want to go back home. I just can't imagine myself living here. As soon as college comes, I'm going home. The rest of the night consisted of me unpacking and not talking to my parents. Who, by the way, still sounded like weirdos speaking in Dutch. I was so used to being home and seeing tourists and not understanding what they're saying. Now I was the one out of place.

I stayed at the house, it's not home, for a couple of days but on Monday I was enrolled in the closest Danish high school. I am definitely not excited. Danish school is different than american school, we get there earlier and leave earlier. I still had a little bit of jet lag so waking up at 5:30 was not an easy task. I always wake up an hour earlier than i have to leave so that I can get ready. The school was really close so I just walked a couple of blocks and I was there just on time. I went to the office and they didn't speak very good english so they just wrote down the room number i had to go to on a piece of paper.

When I got to the room everything was strange. I felt like the ugly duckling in the room. I found a seat in the back corner and sat there alone. When I looked around no one was talking they were just reading their books. they all looked like weirdos to me. None of them were wearing makeup or cute outfits. Like, does appearance mean anything to them here? I had all my makeup and stuff on, I looked so out of place.

The teacher finally came in and acknowledged me so I guess he knew I was here. He pointed at me and everyone looked while he started speaking in Danish. Introducing me I guess. But here comes the worst part. When he introduced me he said my name like “Kahreen”. “It’s Karen.” I didn't have the patience for this. But I don't think he understood me because he still said “Kahreen”. Whatever I can't speak Danish so I’ll just fail all of my classes and become an american loser who lives in Denmark with her parents for the rest of her life.

After a couple of days of hell at my new Danish school I couldn't do it anymore. I felt so alone I couldn't communicate with anyone, my parents spoke in Danish, the people in school spoke in Danish and my friends from home were in a different timezone than me. I had no friends and no one to talk to. Home wasn't even comforting since my parents didn't even seem american anymore. I felt like an exchange student instead of their daughter. I gave up trying to be a rebel and started to take lessons on speaking Danish.

After a couple lessons with my tutor, Koenraad, I was getting a little better. He was pretty nice and kind of cute so I guess the lessons aren't that bad. I guess once I get better I’ll feel more at home in Denmark. I guess spoiled brat wasn't working out for me, so I have to replace it with something else.

Element Project Reflection

Posted by Greta Haskell in Art - Freshman - Hull on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 10:10 pm
1. Inquiry: I researched my element and it was kind of challenging because my element was a noble gas that didn't do much. After researching for a while I came up with a creative idea for my print.

2. Research: Like I said before my research was kind of a challenge but after searching for a while I thought about it. I think that my idea was original and creative for such a boring element.

3. Collaboration: Mrs. Hull helped me a lot because she helped me pick my best idea. She also helped me edit it, after the changes my idea was a lot better. I also helped out some of my classmates if they got confused.

4. Presentation: My presentation could have been better. If i had switched where the negative space was in my print it would have looked a lot better. In my opinion my colors are not dark enough and it would have been better opposite.

5. Reflection: When I reflect on my prints I wish that I could re-do them because I think they could have come out a lot better. I think that they were pretty good for my first try though and even though I don't like them, I am proud of them.

Negative Space- Greta Haskell

Posted by Greta Haskell in Art - Freshman - Hull on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 10:33 am
1. Negative space is when you draw the outline of what you are drawing and instead of coloring the thing in you color outside the lines to show the shape of the object.

2. I found negative space in my drawing by first drawing the outline and then comparing it to the real life object and coloring where there was nothing there, just air. I found negative space in my cut out by looking where there was dark space in the template.

3. It helps an artist to see negative space because they can train themselves on perspective and detail. Once you know how to draw negative space it is easier to see how to draw things.

4. I think seeing negative space enhances the drawings because you can see more perspective and it looks more detailed and three dimensional.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Greta Haskell in Art - Freshman - Hull on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 12:01 pm
1. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before?
One thing that I learned that I did not know before was orthogonal lines and all the names for specific lines and stuff. I knew what they were and how they had to be done but I didn't know what they were called.

2. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better?
Learning these things made my drawing better because now I knew the right way to draw them and I became really good at doing one point perspective stuff in my opinion.

3. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?
I would probably fold my drawing differently and draw my lines a lot darker because they are hard to see in my picture.

4. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?
I would tell them to start small and practice before they try to do something big. Also they should try to be really precise so that they don't have to erase a lot of things.

5. What resource helped you the most and why?
The resource that helped me the most was my brain because I have a pretty good eye for this stuff, I didn't need a lot of help. If I did have a question I would go to moodle to see the presentation Mrs. Hull did so that I could see what she did.

Greta's Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Greta Haskell in Geometry - Thompson on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 2:57 pm
1. How does this project relate to the real world?
This project relates to the real world because this is how people might measure the height of a building to make estimates and stuff. I think they would use this in like the construction business to estimate the height of buildings and stuff. This could also be used for projects like we did in this class. You could also use it to measure the height of other things besides buildings like we did before to measure doors and lockers and things like that. The mirror method is really useful for measuring shorter things like that. The stick method is better for measuring taller things like my building.

2. What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?
The most exciting portion of the project was when we got to go outside and measure. I liked it because we weren't locked up in the math room being bored. It was pretty interactive and it gave us some freedom. Its good cause we are good kids so we dont do anything bad but we dont have to stay up in the class and be bored. The least exciting portion was doing the calculations and stuff cause thats just boring but it was useful that we got to do it in class so that we didnt have a lot of homework and stuff.

3. What did you learn from completing this project?

From completing this project I learned a lot of things. I learned that the mirror method is the easiest but it also does not really work well for tall buildings like mine. I did it twice but both times the results were wrong and not even close so I had to do verification methods so that i could find out close to the right answers. I also learned that if i dont do my homework im not going to be caught up with what we are doing in class so i have to do it.

Tú vs. Usted: Informal vs. Formal

Posted by Greta Haskell in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 12:29 pm

The difference between tú and usted is that Tú is informal (for talking to your friends) and Usted is formal (for talking to an adult).

- the way you use the words can change the whole meaning of the sentence

  • you dont always have to say tú or usted after you ask a question
  • you only have to say it when the word is not in parenthesis

These are some examples of how to use the words

click here for a real life situation of how to use tu vs usted.

My LAN

So I don’t have that much stuff on my LAN. Connected to my Local Area Network I have a printer, a computer, and a t.v. They are all connected through the wireless internet. They all share the network.

My omg Moment: Im not really sure what my OMG moment was. I think that it was probably a mix of everything because I didn’t know anything about networking. i also learned to fix your internet take the battery out of your router and restart it.

What Would I Tell Other People: I would tell other people not to have a lot of things connected to the network because it will make it slower. Also have it password connected so that no one can steal your internet.
