Driver Review - Joshua Martin-Corrales
First, let me talk about the music, as a musician myself, I take notice if a movie's score is especially good, and while some of the tracks were recycled from the Social Network, several themes and the main theme were completely original, and done by, oddly enough, by Cliff Martinez, the former drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The music throughout the movie uses the device of themes, which is extremely powerful, as opposed to modern scoring which is done to simply accompany the images perfectly, theme scoring creates recurring patterns indicating certain emotions and specific characters, and can be layered and edited to mean different things even as they repeat. Two things about the score's importance, in the all-important stomp scene, you hear two themes, which is Irene's, then a theme of violence, marking a powerful transition and sharp division between both, the track is called, "Skull Crushing". Another scene with powerful music is the scene early in the film, where The Driver is with Irene and Benicio, spending the day with them, as we first hear the track, "A Real Hero", which returns at the end of the movie.
While I'm on scenes, let me talk more about some other ones, the stomp scene speaks for itself, it shows the division of the character and his love, and his demonstration of a kind of truth, but enough about that. I also mentioned the scene where The Drive spends the day with Irene and her child, while nothing is said, the scene shows this instant kind of connection between them and him, and it starts the real relationship between them. While I'm on it, I should briefly mention dialogue, there's not much of it. Not at all. I love that. The movie didn't need it, and everything was perfectly silent, dialogue was usually thin and short, they let the scene tell you what was going on, and didn't make it obvious, which is something you don't see too often in film. Another important scene is when Bryan Cranston (who is always amazing) is telling Irene about The Driver and himself, in some of the only real monologuing in the movie, he explains much about The Driver's characters and goals. Another is where The Driver kills Nino by crashing into him, the silence of the scene is perfect, and the passing light make it unforgettable, not to mention good camera work, which applies to all these scenes of course, the movie's camera is always good, shots positioned perfectly make the movie's intentions covering for the lack of dialogue. The last important scene, is of course, the ending, where The Driver sits perfectly still, a kind of fake out to the audience, the scene is perfect, it makes us think he's done, then he blinks, and the music starts, the ending begins, this kind of, breaking out of death is explored, and the movie ends soon after, with a less than satisfying, though still powerful ending.
Now, the story, is a split one, we have the storyline of revenge for The Driver, his heist gone wrong, and the repercussions, the other is a love story with Irene. I think the love story is the better half of the movie, the love is pure and when Irene's husband returns from prison, he doesn't try to interfere, but makes himself available, and even as he is caught up with his other storyline, the heist and its repercussions, he still manages to act properly to her, and to tell her the truth even if it means losing her, right before he has to show her that he's deeply involved, in the all-important stomp scene. The story lines are interwoven so well, one might just say that it was one story, but the fact that they are so well put together, yet are still distinguishable is a definite bonus to the movie, you see two sides of The Driver, while you still explore this one cohesive idea.
Finally, let me talk about acting. Like I said, the dialogue in this movie is nearly nonexistent, even in the stomp scene, where an action line begs to come into play, the movie remains silent and lets actions speak louder than words. Which is my point, actions speaking louder than words, the lines are delivered perfectly, but the actors exist in this silence so very perfectly that it is incredible, Ryan Gosling's acting is through the roof, as the character who speaks the least, he had the most to say with his acting, and he spoke volumes. Then there's him and Irene, played by Carey Mulligan (whose accent does not bleed through at all and I'm totally jealous), the relationship half of the movie is focused on. Like I said, it's pure, they only kiss once, in the all-important stomp scene, and other than that, the most they do is hold hands. They barely speak, so like I said, action, the way they look at each other, the emotional in the barebones lines in their dialogue is so powerful we can tell absolutely that Irene is the most important thing to The Driver. Their music too, helps establish this relationship, and their closeness even without touching, they stand so close to each other, which is perfect to show more than what dialogue could tell us.
Overall, l think the movie is great, and you should see it and complain loudly to your friends about how it didn't get any academy awards.
Sound A+: Music, car noises, stomping, perfect.
Visuals A+: Shot so very well I go crazy, every scene is picture perfect.
Acting A+: Not one person is lacking, even the child actor, who are sometimes just awful.
Story B+: The only thing I don't think is perfect is the story, The Driver as a character is weakly covered by the story, and the pacing of it is sometimes just strange. It's still super good though.
Overall A: Super good, super super good, but not completely perfect, not many movies are though. (needs more dream sequences.)
Requiem for a Dream: Film Review
Let's start with the title, going at it from the top, you might think, "Kinda a cheesy title." Well, let me break it down, Requiem for a Dream would mean, the song for the rest of the dead dreams, that's one hell of a title, it implies two things we see in the movie, dreams, and them being utterly and completely destroyed. The movie is divided into three segments, Summer, the beginning, Fall, the middle, and Winter, the end. Not exactly cheery, but neither is the movie.
The movie begins pretty weak, to the point where you might think that it could be (gasp) a bad movie. The first few shots are pretty cliche, and don't do anything for me, with several basic shots and possibly my least favorite, a cut down the middle shot that has two images displayed. However, the movie sets its tone so powerfully for that first part, in an opening scene where the main character, Harry steals a TV from his mother in order to pawn it for drug money, specifically money for heroin. Before we even see the title of the movie, we see most of this action, ending with the golden line from Harry's mother, Sarah, "As long it all turns out OK."
The acting in this first scene, once again, doesn't do much for me, the lines are delivered, but the movie starts so suddenly that it makes little sense to the audience. However, the acting throughout the movie is surprisingly good, even Marlon Wayans and Jared Leto manage to be very good, of course Ellen Burstyn steals the show as Harry's mother, Sarah Goldfarm.
The movie, as a whole, is about addiction, and how it ruins lives. Every character struggles with their addictions with a dream in mind tossed aside by their addiction. As the movie moves forward, these addictions become more and more extreme, culminating in frightening situations and an overall terrific ending. But let's not be too hasty.
The movie is heavy on foreshadowing, every single line seems to reek of the stuff, and all throughout the first act, characters seem to allude to their ultimate fate, whether it be something slight, or almost overwhelmingly obvious. The beginning also works hard to establish motifs, the sudden and sharp cuts that signify drug use instantly get in your head, and leave a powerful effect. It also shows the style of camera work, no shots are completely steady, and the camera shakes slightly even in pans to set an on edge move, like I said, the movie is sharp. The score settles into the movie early on as well, establishing itself in the opening sequence.
What you notice, early in the movie is that the shots are warm, not very dark, they let in a lot of warm orangey light to reflect the season the movie begins in, Summer, but as the seasons progress, every single set the movie is in gets paler and less warm, almost colder as the seasons get colder and colder. The tone also changes with the seasons, while during Summer everything is handled fairly well in a relaxed matter, by the time Winter begins, the excrement has hit the fan. The lamer shots disappear, and the movie becomes the violently sharp thing that kicked my ass both times. The dialogue gets more tense too, you can feel the effects of the seasons changing on the characters as the stakes get higher and higher, while relationships between them get more and more strained. The movie's smash cuts pick up, and the transitions are less basic, even disappearing, the effects of constant drug use become painfully obvious in a terrifying scene involving Ellen Burstyn being attacked by a refrigerator. The movie doesn't stop there, it picks up to the point where everyone's dreams are ground into nothing.
The movie is a dramatic and powerful experience sure to entertain and absolutely destroy you. I end this review with a bit of dialogue I had with my sister upon finishing the movie, having never seen it, I asked, "So spring never comes?" To which she replied without missing a beat, "No one makes it through the winter."
Sound: A+, great score and snappy noise makes the movie feel completely real and totally adds to the feel.
Visuals: A, minus the very beginning, all shots are perfect for the tone of the movie, and the seemless transitions during dialogue make the visuals a treat. Not to mention some excellent special effects and make-up.
Acting: A, you can never take Jared Leto too seriously, but that just might be my problem. Besides that, amazing acting, Ellen Burstyn of course stealing the show.
Story: A+, like I said, the first half drips foreshadowing, and the second half drips tears onto my face. A fantastic story.
Overall Grade:
A+, would watch again if I'm ever too happy.

Thomas Edison in Fiction
None
Slide 2:
You know Thomas Edison, inventor of the lightbulb, the creator of the motion film camera, godfather of funk, however, do you know Thomas Edison the cultist? The ghost? The violent thief? The ever feuding scientist?
Thomas Edison is oft portrayed as a hard working inventor, who overcame a lot in order to become the most important inventor of the 20th century. You can decide if he was hard working, or had to overcome anything on your own. But I'm not here to discuss what he was, I'm here to tell you what he looks like, do most of you agree that Thomas Edison is usually seen as a good guy who's inventions did a lot? Well, fiction would disagree, before I get into these examples however, here are some facts,
Slide 3:
Thomas Edison did not invent the lightbulb, he invented a filament to make the lightbulb last longer.
Thomas Edison was for most a businessman, most of his inventions were small patents that made big changes to already existing inventions.
Thomas Edison once hired Tesla to work at his lab, and tricked him out of $20,000, Tesla continued to feud with him until his death.
He shocked animals to death in order to scare people from using alternating current, against his direct current.
Thomas Edison did talk about inventing a machine to talk to the dead.
Slide 4:
Edison, in movies, comics, and other fiction, is very much not the prominent young inventor he is in non-fictional biographies. Like I said earlier, Edison is portrayed as the opposite, he is portrayed a s weirdo, a psychopath, and a number of things, here are a few examples.
Slide 5:
In the manga, that's japanese comic for some of you, The Lives of Eccentrics by Hirohiko Araki, Thomas Edison is portrayed as an inventor for sure, however his methods are viewed as impractical, and he is violent towards lab assistants, and in general cruel. This is dramatized in a fictional scene where Edison attacks Tesla for building an alternating current generator instead of a direct current generator, and another where he kills an animal with electric current to show that alternating current is dangerous. Here's what's important, the viewpoint is skewed, the manga focuses on Tesla, as many choose to do, and therefore must show Edison as a negative force, however, the manga gets most of its facts straight, and was fairly well researched.
Slide 6:
In other comics, Edison is not only shown for his scientific prowess, but also with a talent, and even an obsession for the occult. For example, in Matt Fraction’s Five Fists of Science, Thomas Edison is shown to be deeply into the occult, summoning demons and such through human sacrifice, and owning an extensive collection of mythical animals, such as the yeti we see so prominently featured on this slide.
Slide 7:
For a lighter example, we look at Brian Clevinger’s all ages comic Atomic Robo, which features a similarly occult based Edison character. In this comic however, his focuses are still science based, and he tries to combine the occult with the scientific, using the odic force in an attempt to create immortality. In this, it not only makes Edison a thief, who steals both technology and mystical items for his purposes, but also as someone obsessed with his idea of something. It also makes sense of his plea for direct current, saying the reason he was so strongly for it, was because it could easily conduct odic force. Atomic Robo’s Edison is similar to Five Fist of Science’s, though there are differences simply because of target audience.
Slide 8:
Here's another example, which is from a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, in the story, Edison is a genius, inventing a device to measure the intelligence of a person or animal, this leads to him finding out that his dog was much smarter than even Edison himself, and in order to keep it a secret, the dog gave him the secret to the filament in his light bulb. This is a different fictional side, because while it does show Edison, it does not show him as a villain or as opposed to Tesla or any force of good, in fact, he’s still a genius. The difference is that like most of Vonnegut’s work, this is a comedy.
Slide 9:
So, Edison is portrayed as bad, Tesla is portrayed as good. Why is this?
The main reason is because Edison lived a life of happiness, while Tesla slowly became more miserable, if you look at that, it's easy to understand exactly why Edison is portrayed as bad, his effect on Tesla's life was negative, and since they were known to feud it slowly becomes more obvious that Edison is not a good person, or at least, it becomes a more prominent viewpoint. And since Tesla was an eccentric as opposed to the fairly straight-laced Edison, he becomes a more interesting person to write about to a fiction author, not to mention that Edison's work was practical, while Tesla's involved "death rays" and "automatons capable of destroying cities" and "earthquake machines".
I think, that another part is about the attraction of Tesla, while Edison was a methodical worker, Tesla was creative and ingenious in his methods, something writers often find interesting, or find themselves connecting to, while no fiction writer can compare to the dreary Edison, working bit by bit in a completely organized pace, obviously the somewhat crazed Tesla is more fun to write about, and Edison is easily put into an antagonistic role.
Slide 10:
Not to say Edison is bad in all fiction, but he is almost always a villain of some kind, however, in non-fiction, it's interesting that not only do they portray him in a positive light, they completely eliminate the negative things Edison did, like electrocuting animals, or messing with Tesla about the money.
Slide 11:
To finish, I'd like to examine, perhaps one of the most critical points of Edison's life, his death. When he died, newspapers were filled with friends and companions' words of praise, all but one quote talked about his genius, and that was Nikola Tesla's himself.
Slide 12:
None.
Q4 Benchmark, "La musica bruta y fuerta"
"No no no, tome ulna momento, y escucha a mi guitarro."
