Capstone

For my capstone, I plan to make a short documentary film of this year’s 2012-13 SLA Boys Basketball Team.  My documentary will focus on the highs and lows of this season, as well as how everyone grew in their own aspect as well as what they learned throughout the season.  I will include game time decisions in the heat of the moment, on/off court commentary, and interviews.  Interviews will just be asking a few individuals how they felt the season went, what could’ve been better, what they learned, who they saw grow, and whom they thought was the best teammate and why.  I will also focus on what they are looking forward to next season, and what they’ll miss.  I chose this topic because basketball is a game that I’ve fall in love with since a child and it’s taught me many lessons as well as helped me grow and mature, and I’m very interested in Psychology so this would allow me to take a step back and see how basketball affects others and if it provides the same benefits.

I decided to write about the video of the mother losing her son.  The film made me feel some what sad.  It was upsetting to see how muslims were treated after 9/11.  It was sad to know that most of them were seen as terrorist, even with those whom they had a relatively good relationship with, before the tragedy, an example of that would be the neighbor.  Before 9/11 the mother and and the neighbor were on a speaking basis where they'd say "Hi" and "Bye" and wave at each other, but after 9/11, when the news was suspecting her son as a terrorist, the neighbor no longer spoke, and treated her as if they had never even met each other.  The way the director made it obvious that the neighbor no longer wanted to associate with the mother, made it much more dramatic and you truly felt the pain, of the mother, because when the neighbor ignored the mother, you noticed in the background, that the other neighbors were on their stoop just staring at the mother and watching the man look her off.

Project
http://whatifosama.blogspot.com/

  • Describe your Point of Divergence.
My point of divergence was, What if, Osama Bin Laden was killed in the Battle Of Jaji in May of 1987, during the Soviet War in Afghanistan.  I chose to focus on this because I thought it would be unique to imagine a world, as well as a life to some without Osama Bin Laden, of course I couldn't touch on the topic of 9/11, but since that's what most know Osama for, many would never know who Osama Bin Laden was.

  • What is the future you envisioned resulting from the POD? (short summary)
I envisioned the future being a lot more peaceful.  Muslim's wouldn't be looked at as aliens or outsiders, they'd be accepted all across America.  Terrorism would be as common as well, Bin Laden was famous for his terroristic acts, and since him, terrorism has become more common.  I believe if he was killed in 1987, many terroristic acts that took place, wouldn't have happened.
  • What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?
I liked the fact that we got to choose what we wanted to look into and what we wanted to focus on.  Most projects are assigned, but this one was what ever we wanted it to be.  The most challenging part about my project, was not talking about 9/11.  9/11 was a big part of Osama Bin Laden and his image and how he became known to many people in America, and it's weird because if he was killed in 1987, many people wouldn't have ever know who he was, not only because 9/11 didn't happen but because around that time, he was just coming into the light and grasping power.
  • Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
I found it very interesting that Osama was a very wealthy man and that he helped fund a whole rebellion, it makes me wonder many different things.  One being that if he never inherited the money from his father and his family never became well known, would he have ever been involved in the battle of Jaji and would he have ever been any different from any other Saudi Arabian man born around around that time.
  • How do the actions of individuals impact the historical record?
Actions of individuals impact history A LOT.  Osama was one of the leaders in the War On Terror.  If he had died in 1987, there would've been no war.  Terrorism wouldn't have been as popular either.  As I said before people link Osama Bin Laden to terrorism, all the time, but with him dead, terrorism wouldn't be that popular and wouldn't be used as much world-wide.
  • How do systemic changes impact the historical record?
Systemic changes also affect history a lot.  Osama Bin Laden was a dictator and allowed people to believe in terrorism and that America was their enemy, and even though he has died, his ways live on.  Many of those in the Arabin Nation and Muslim nation see Americans as their enemies.
  • How influential can one decision be in the historical landscape?
One decision can be very influential, Osama bin Laden proved that, he chose to fund the revolt and with that one choice he began a full out war.  Without him funding the the soldiers and recruiting soldiers, there wouldn't have been a full out war, I believe that there would've been a couple of battles and fights here and there, but not a full blown war.
  • How could this project be improved?
I believe that I could've improved the project by researching the Battle Of Jajji a little more.  I think I could've been able to find a better and more interesting way for Osama to be killed.
  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your process for the project?
I would change the death of Osama, I would make it a lot more interesting and research it a lot more.

In this conversation me and Estafan talked about football, we argued because he said that he liked the Chargers and that said the Eagles sucked.  He told me that he likes Calvin Johnson and Antonio Gates and they are two of his favorite players.  He said that the eagles were crazy and that they were worst then the Chargers.

For this blog post me and Estafan talked about his favorite celebrity.  It was odd because his favorite sport is Soccer and he plays soccer, but his favorite celebrity was Kevin Durant, whom happens to be a basketball player.  He also said that his favorite basketball team was the OKC Thunder, and they are believed to win the NBA championship this year, so we talked about that and he believes that they would win the championship because they are a young team who are fast and strong and very athletic.

For this blog post I talked to Estafan again.  Me and him talked about food this time.  I found out that me and him have a lot in common.  We talked about his favorite foods and then I found out that he loves Sushi just like me.  He asked me what kind.  We both like Cali Rolls as well as Seaweed.

For my blog post, I talked to Estafan, he’s a fluent spanish speaking freshman, we talked a lot about what each of us enjoyed and what we did over the weekends.  The conversation started off a little rocky, It was some what awkward because I didn’t really know how to start the conversation or to really say anything that interesting.  Once we got started things went much smoother though.  I was a little self-conscious when we were talking because I realized how well he could speak spanish and that I wasn’t even close to being as good as him.  He kind of chuckled when I’d say something wrong but he would correct me and tell me what I said wrong, and how to say it right.  We had a few things in common, we both enjoy frisbee, and we both love sports.  We talked a little about soccer since I didn’t really know a lot about soccer he informed me.  The conversation wasn’t for that long but overall it went pretty well.

What went well?

I think what went well was the group working together as a whole and getting all the work done on time.

What did not?

I think what didn’t go well was the fact that we had a lot of websites, maybe too many, and that made it hard to figure out what we wanted to use for info .

What would you do differently next time?

If I could do something different next time, I'd probably make something physical as well as the picture, something some what interactive.

Be Concise: I believe our project was concise

Be Visual: Our visual was pretty good, it included facts as well as pictures.

Be Smarter: I think our project could've been a little more detailed.

Be Different: Our project wasn't so much different, but ours provided facts relating to the pictures, and I'm not sure if anyone else used our concept.

Be Accurate: We used Sources that were reliable, sufficient, and to the point. We mainly based our sources on articles.

Be Attractive: Our info graphic included pictures that related to our descriptions.

Be Varied: We used a variety of pictures.

Be Creative: I thought we were creative by adding the pictures to match the facts.

Which of these areas did you excel in?

I believe we excelled with our creativeness, as well as our information.

Which were not so well represented?

I don't think anything wasn't well represented, I do believe somethings weren't at their full potential for example, I think the fact that we just used the pictures with the facts wasn't that interesting, it was kind of creative but it could've been better.

Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

I think having to do an info-graph made things harder since we've never made one before.

Sci-Fi

Sci-Fi Paper
Jakobi Martin-Howard
Water-Stream

Once upon a time, there was a Planet, all the way at the ends of the galaxy.  A Planet called Cantua, on this planet lived two tribes, not any regular tribes, but a tribe of Apes, that went by the name of Los Gobernantes, or the Gobs, and a tribe called The Kings, the Kings weren’t like the Gobs though, they were of a whole different species, something like a cross-breed between a Lizard, and a Dinosaur, what some would consider...a Dragon!
On this planet the two tribes lived on two seperate sides, The Gobs controlled the North side of Cantua, while the Kings controlled the South side.  The West side of Cantua was where the “Holy Spirits”, a group of cloaked creatures whom over-see Cantua, and make sure no problems ever arise.  And the East side of Cantua, is the Forbidden land, where NOBODY, the Gobs, Kings, nor the Holy Spirits are ever allowed to enter.
Long ago, the Gobs, and the Kings, were once close companions.  They lived on Cantua in peace, they shared the North, and the South side.  At one point they even shared the same government, as well as shared celebrations.  As time went on though, everything became different.  It all started at the “Beginning’s Parade”, an annual celebration where everyone gets together and watches the Moon, pass the Sun, causing a total eclipse.
That night, as usual the Gobs and the Kings were together in the center of Cantua, known as the “Meet-Up” where there is a large hill allowing everyone to see the eclipse.  As everyone was arriving, there seemed to be a lot of tension between the Gobs, and the Kings.  Something just didn’t seem right, and it was obvious, usually the hill was filled with Gobs and Kings together, but this night, both groups stood on two seperate sides of the hill.  The Gobs on the north, and the Kings on the south.  As the night went on, neither tribes spoke to each other, they stayed on their sides and watched the marvelous phenomenon.  As everything became pitch-black, a scream rang out.  Not just any scream, the scream of a female in sharp pain!  Once the scream rang out, everything just became a mess.  Everything and everyone seemed to be going every which way.  A few moments later, when the eclipse had ended when the everything was seen again.  There were numerous bodies all across the ground.  Everyone began to scream, and dispurse, running wild and going everywhere!  Many didn’t even stick around to see what had actually happened, they ended up disappearing in their territories...
The next day, the Gobs, and the Kings held a meeting.  Both leaders of the groups arrived at the hill where the incident had occured just a day ago.  At the meeting is where they both reached the conclusion that both sides should just keep to their sides of Cantua.  They also decided that the “Meet-Up” was now off limits for both tribes.
Now, on with the story.  It was a regular Tuesday on Cantua, and as usual, Lenny, leader of the Kings went on his annual visit to the Holy Spirits to receive his usual spiritual guidance.  As usual he was gone for about an hour.  When he returned like usual he went to go check on his son, the prince of the Kings, Prince Iman.  As he went to go check on him, he realized something strange on the floor, something that resembled the foot print of an ape.  Once he saw the print he immediately ran into his only sons room, and there in the overssized crib that his son constantly stayed in, laid absolutely NOTHING.  He suddenly spread his wings, and let out a dreadful howl!  As he howled, a good amount of fellow Kings showed up in his sons room, and saw exactly what he saw when he had first entered the room.  Without any hesitation or question he told them all that they were going right to the Gobs.  Without a second to waste the Kings were already in the air, close to a thousand deep painting the sky a darkish red color, and filling it with horrible screatches!
Before the Kings could even reach the north of Cantua the Gobs were already out of their homes, and were all standing out in the streets trying to see what all the commotion was about.  As the Kings finally reached the home of Krill, the leader of the Gobs.  There were at least 100 Gobs waiting alongside him.  He greeted Lenny with an absolute look of disgust, and seemed to not even acknowledge the rest of the Kings.  He quickly got to the point asking “What are you here for!?”  Lenny quickly snapped back saying “I know one of you filthy monkeys took my son!”  When hearing this Krill began to chuckle a little and then looked around.  After about another minute of chuckling, he then replied stating that he nor any of the Gobs haven’t stepped foot on the South side since the “altercation”.  Lenny with a puzzled look snapped back again asking “If not you, and your monks, then who!? I found one of your dirty little monkey prints on my sons floor”.  As his eyes opened much wider Krill asked “Were the footprints some what bloody?”  Without even taking a breath Lenny nodded his head.  With a large intake of breath Krill, without blinking began to speak.  “Two days ago, one of my Gobs was attacked while heading towards the “Holy Spirits” territory. They both stare at each other. Fear overcame them so much that words weren’t able to speak from their lips. When the realization of the matter hit them, Lenny then said” We need to find out what this thing is and where it came from!” Krill in agreement said “Yes! But where are we to start, what are we to do?” Both took some time to think about what to do. “We must trace its tracks! That’s the only way we’ll be able to find the source of it.”
This journey is going to be a long and dangerous one, but it is one the Lenny and Krill will and must take to find out what it is this monstrous being is...
continues to next book.

Immigration Visualization Project Submission

Posted by Jakobi Martin-Howard in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:24 am
My group decided to do a project by hand, instead of doing it as a powerpoint or a project on the computer.  We intended to draw walls with groups of people climbing over them.  Each group would be holding a flag with the amount of of immigrants migrated into the US in that time period, and then on the walls we wrote what happened to cause them to come to America.

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

I was most surprised about the reasons people in the US didn't want them in American and all the things they said, and how the felt about the other people, especially the Asians during the period when they were all banned to enter the US.  It seemed very obvious that when the government decided to tell them they couldn't enter America, that's when a lot more Asians began to enter.

  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

I feel that it will continue, it may slow down a little though due to the economy and the recession that everyones in at the moment, but when, and if we ever get out of this recession and get back on our feet, i'm pretty sure that it will increase.

  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
We all felt that since Kamilah is a talented drawer, and everyone was doing something on the computer, we could be different and use our strengths.

  • What parts of group work were challenging?

Figuring out how everyone could contribute was a little hard, but after we figured that out, the hardest part was the drawing for me because im a very terrible artist, that's why i said we "intended to draw walls" for some reason i couldn't draw the walls correctly so we switched them to books, but the drawing was simply the hardest part to me.

  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

I'd work on my drawing so that we could've stuck to the plan so that they would look like walls, instead of books, but other then that, nothing, overall i thought the project was pretty good.
