Film Review- Krystal Cabrera

Posted by Krystal Cabrera-Molina in Intersectional Feminism · Menasion · e1 Band on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 8:32 am

The two films that I’m choosing to review are Divergent and Black Panther. These are my personal favorite movies. Even though these are movies that have good female chracters we don’t know if they pass the bechdel test. The bechdel test is if two female characters in a movie have a conversation not involving a man.

Divergent is based on a futuristic society that is divided. It’s divided into five factions. Each faction has one specific role in their society. Everyone has to fit into either one of the factions, if you don’t your considered Divergent. In this case Tris is divergent and she has to hide her secret because divergent’s are considered a threat to their society. Tris must undergo physical and mental test in the faction she chose while also having to try and hide her secret.

The second movie that I’ll be reviewing is Black Panther. This movie was such a huge break through into the African American culture. Black Panther is a marvel movie about a technoligically advanced African civilization. T’Challa was the son of one of the King’s son. He was left in America by himself. T’Challa buit rage over the years and when he found Wakanda he took over it. Black Panther the real king of Wakanda took back his thrown after a vigorious battle.

I really fell in love with Divergent because Tris the main female character was a good example. She was strong and brave through out the movie. There were many task that she had to overcome but with the support of her family/firends they were able to escape oppression and abuse. This movies does pass the bechdel test because a lot of female charcaters talk with one another about their struggles.

Black Panther was a huge step forward for African/African American culture. The main character was not a female but there were a lots of females that played inportant roles too. For example, Okoya played role as the head of Wakanda’s special forces. She was such a strong female character because she was true warrior. Okoya risked everything for her country and was loyal to her leaders. She displayed an honorable warrior throughout the entire movie. This movies passes the bechdel test because there was a small snipit of two females having a conversation not regarding a male.

Now that you know background information about the two movies that I chose it’s time to make up my test of choice and see if it passes. For my test I’d like to see if there is at least one main female chracater that leads a group of people that doesn’t involve any sort of romance. It can’t be a minor part of the movie but important. With the new test that I made I’ll be reviewing Divergent and Black Panther to see if they pass the test.

I personally think that Divergent does not pass my test. Throughout the movie Tris has a romantic conncetion with Four the entire time. She is the leader of a group but the romance stands out more. Maybe in the other movies that came out after the first one do pass because Tris and Four already have the love it’s not like they need to build it. For example, Tris and Four are new lovers which involves more time on them to build that feeling throughout the movie. On the other hand, in the other movies the focus can be on building communities not love. If that makes sense.

Moving onto Black Panther, I think that it does pass my test. The Queen of Wakanda was a leader and she wasn’t involved in romance. She lost her husband and she wasn’t trying to rekindle a new flame. Next, Okoya was the general of Wakanda’s army. She did have a lover but they didn’t come in contact a lot in the movie. Okoya was even put to the test if she would chose her lover over her country and chose her country. I feel like it passes teh test because this idea of a women chosing her future over a man is not seen in many movies. Most movies the women leaves her job to fit into these men’s lives. So I feel like it showed a ver strong image on women today.

Final Stamp Design

Posted by Krystal Cabrera-Molina in Art - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 10:20 am
When I'm asked to draw something that symbolizes me I always think of the letter K. First of all, my name starts with a K. Usually people mix it up with a C but it's important for me to correct them. The K isn't just representing me but my brother as well. Kenneth is a very important person because we were born on the same day. Not month or year but the same day. That's why in my stamp I decided to include two K's. One of them is flipped just to create intersecting lines.
My initial idea was to draw the number twenty-seven in roman numerals. I couldn't do that because it was just lines. Since there was only lines, there wasn't any positive/negative space. I tried to outline the numbers but it defeated my purpose. After looking at my paper for a long time I just started drawing. I wasn't thinking and the end result was a K. To add more I just drawed a flipped K. My process was nothing specific. Usually when I think too much it takes longer than needed.
The hardest part about finding positive/negative space is making sure that the image you were trying to portray is the same. That's what happened to me with the roman numerals. Once I cut the dark lines(positive space) there was nothing to glue on. So I had to go back and change my image. Once I was able to figure what piece I wanted to be on the paper that is my positive space. In this case the two K's are my positive space. The space around it is negative because it's not the center of attention.

Negative/Positive Space- cut out

Posted by Krystal Cabrera-Molina in Art - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 9:48 am
For the image that I cut out and put together I was trying to create positive and negative space. As you can see on the right side black is being used to create negative space. The slight pink is positive because it's the lighter shade. On the other hand, on the left pink is being used more creating more positive space. To summarize, the left side has more positive space because there is more pink; the right side has more negative space because it has more black.
Positive and negative space helps artist because it creates contrast. The darker shade adds detail and depth. Without detail you wouldn't be able to tell what the image is. It enhances the image because if you mess up it would very noticeable. In my image you can tell that it's not as neat/clean, so it's important to take your time cutting.

Printmaking Blog - Day 2

Posted by Krystal Cabrera-Molina in Art - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 10:07 am
Printmaking is a unique way to transfer pictures/paintings onto a textured canvas. For example, instead of just painting a picture on canvas paper, artist use metal, wood, plate, stone or screen. There isn't just one processes of printmaking-relief, intaglio, lithography, stencil, etc.
One of the important reasons why printmaking was invented so people can communicate from long distances. Johannes Gutenberg was the first person to introduce printing to Europe. It allowed for people to make multiple copies of one. This was people were able to expand news. People all around the world were now able to here from distant areas.
When I shop for home decor I usually go for a modern look. To me modern has a very small color pallet. For example, black, white, grey and tan. So for the image I chose consisted of black and white. This way there is contrast and postive/negative space. Giving it an aesthetically pleasing look. In the image there is also fading. The fading makes it different because I know there was a different technique involved in order to make the image.

I notice that art has different meanings. For example, some artist focus on certain techniques- point perspective, positive/negative space. art isn't just coloring. There is music also involved with art. I always wondered how artist come up with such unique ideas. Personally I have a hard time coming up with something of my own. What if printmaking was never discovered ? How would people communicate? There would have not been books, newspaper, signs, etc.

Reflection On Media Fluency

Technology Assignment - Slide (2)

The only changes that made were at the bottom of my slide. I attached the arrow line to the female cartoon fighter. This adds significance because the quote has to do with the fighter. So now people understand that they are together to finish a story. The story is that there’s only one winner in the end so that’s why there’s only one fighter. A fighter must never give up and keep going. So that’s why the quotes goes with the female cartoon fighter.

Technology Assignment - Slide (1)

What describes me the most ? Am I going for my girly side, or should I pick my athletic side? This is a tough decision because both traits are a big part in my life. My girly side sets the first impression for everyone, which is important. On the other hand, sports is my biggest passion. I love the feeling of being “fit”. For my slide I chose to incorporate both traits.

Black Sparta Management has my name written all over it. This is the boxing gym that I go to. In my “Me Magazine” I wrote a lot about boxing and all the great people I met through boxing. Boxing is a big part of my life, It built me into the person I am today. Boxing taught me to not hold back. For my slide I chose to have have the main focus be “Black Sparta”. I chose the font to be 96 so that the people's eyes immediately go towards it. Black would be the best color because it’s dark so you can see even from long distances and it shows the boldness.

Now for the hint of girliness I decided to set a pink background for “Black Sparta”. I chose to do this because it added color to my slide and added contrast. I didn’t want it to be completely plain because then it wouldn’t be attractive. For a mixture of both traits, on the left, bottom corner I inserted a small picture of a female fighter in the color pink. This way whoever sees my slide can understand what “Black Sparta Management” is. Also next to the image I added a quote so that people would actually read it. Not too long, not too short. In my slide “Management” is placed under “ Black Sparta” just because to me it didn’t look right next to “Black Sparta”. But I made sure to italic it because that way people know that it’s important too, not just a random piece.

My Home Network

Posted by Krystal Cabrera-Molina in Technology - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 5:01 pm
1.) My local network is Comcast. Through Comcast we 4 phones, 1 pinter, 2 smart TVs, wireless soundbar, home theater, and 3 laptops.
2.) From looking through my house and seeing what my WiFi comes from I was able to understand what basically goes on. Before I really didn't think about it, but now it's all I thinks about. I learned that if the modern router is placed at a higher elevation the signal/speed would be better.
3.) I would personally tell other people that they should learn more about their network because in case of any situations you will be able to fix it or work with it.
