Matthew Ginnetti Capstone

Posted by Matthew Ginnetti in Capstone - Dunn on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 9:01 am

For my capstone I decided to educate the underclassmen in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) field of astronomy. I have been apart of the Franklin’s Project S.P.A.C.E. (Scholastic Program for Astronomy and Celestial Events) team for about one year now and this project was sole centered around my involvement in the program. This was a joint capstone with students Allen Yang, and Winston Wright. Within Project S.P.A.C.E. each of us held a specific role with specific responsibilities where each of us specialized in a specific field of astronomy which we taught under class men about. Within Project S.P.A.C.E. we led mini courses where over the course of six weeks each of us instructed two different classes for about ninety minutes each. Derrick Pitts, the Cheif astronomer of the Franklin, along with other Joel L. Bloom observatory staff at the franklin mentored this project. The lack of astronomy interest and education within the United States education system is primarily why I chose to this project. Increasing the interest of astronomy to high school and middle school is one of the sole purposes of Project SPACE. Along with teaching a mini course, I also spent the year creating a prototype application for the the Franklin which educated users about the International Space Station. Below both the lesson plan and the prototype app are attached along with some photos of the class.

Bibliography

--Kennedy, John. "Moon Speech." Rice University, 12 September 1962. Speech.

John F. Kennedy's moon speech at Rice College clearly shows his indepth persuasive attitude as he pushes for travel to the moon and for the development of the F-1 engines. The speech dynamically explains the benefits of NASA and what they are doing. I connect this to how the government hid NASA’s actual reason of creation. In his speech, JFK talks about the job creation and about how mankind wishes to stretch itself. NASA’s actual mission was to create a rocket powerful enough to carry the United States’ nuclear weapons.

--Dryden, Hugh. United States. Special committee on Space Technology. Special Committee on Space Technology Report. 1958. Print.

Dryden explains NASA’s actual intentions of the space race. He goes on to speak about how rockets were beneficial to both the military and scientists and how scientific instruments could be replaced with weapons.

This primary resource video was used to show the viewer and help them visualize what the narrator was talking about. This specific footage was taken of John F. Kennedys famous “We choose the moon” speech at Rice University.

--CEVOrion , , prod. Saturn V - S-1C Stage Testing. Youtube, 2007. Filmstrip. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3sVuFjJlp4>.

This primary resource video was used to show the viewer and help them visualize what the narrator was talking about. This specific clip showed the static testing of the F-1 liquid fuel Engine.

--Howard, Ron, dir. Apollo 13. Universal Pictures, 1995. Film. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgHYGw9OL7c>.

The footage I used consisted of the launch sequence of the saturn V rocket. The footage is completely computer generated but I feel it gives the most realistic experience to what the launch was like in High definition. In the Documentary I morphed together apollo 13 footage with actual footage of the launch, giving the viewers an interesting experience.

PCB Poisoning Info-Graphic

Posted by Matthew Ginnetti in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 12:11 pm

a. What went well?
Our group collaboration of info went very well, we effectively discussed our ideas as a group.

b. What did not?
It was a little difficult thinking of ideas that would make our info-graphic unique
c. What would you do differently next time?
I would change our groups time management.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -
Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

I think we excelled in the the aspects of creativity, visuality, and conciseness.
Asa group we used google sketch-up to visually represent what was happening to the river and how the company was dumping in harmful PCB's. Making it different was a little challenging, it was hard to think of creative ideas to make our project stand out.

Earths Angel's of Hostility

Our documentary consists of three different parts. Nick was responsible for his Industrial Revolution, Ginnetti was responsible for the Space Race and Allen for his Aerial Warfare Revolution (Airplane: Revolution in Warfare). We linked up all three topics together and created a time-line like video process. Using many videos taken from online and amassing lots of information from various sites to prove and also create an intense documentary. The entire documentary was created using iMovie, with the addition of voice overs to display our knowledge.

Fat cats and poor, rags versus rich,

Been playing too long its causing a glitch,

The Monopolizing monopolies the fat cats who rule

They're taxing the poor and acting far too cruel

The change in America isn't change for the better

Mother Liberty is dying and I got a question will we let her?

This monopoly is a game I ask what piece are you

The fat cats who collect or the players without a clue

We're suffering for their choices, but they're deaf when we holler

Passing GO too many times and collecting our 200 dollars

Rockefeller and Carnegie the ingredients destroying our system

The ones with money and greed but no sense of wisdom

Teddy shot them down on an economical hunt

Solving many problems on a diplomatic front

Stopping the railroad, the coal, the game altogether

Busting the trusts and making life better

The monopolies were dead, but the game still went on

Sucking Americas work and hope until it was all gone

The stock market crashed, the system had faded

Until FDR came along took the system and upgraded

The WPA, and Social Security Act

Brought the economy higher than before and that's a fact

Making jobs for the unemployed was from the Civil Works Administration

Healing the scars one by one of a broken Nation

Explain your choice of Presentation Format:

I chose to present with a poem, because I feel that writing poetry would better show my understanding of the topic rather then creating a powerpoint.

Two sentences about your answer to the essential question.
Systematic change is and can be created by anybody with the will power. However not everybody will benefit from it.

What questions do you sill have about business in America?
Is there anyway that business could be successful for everybody?

IMS

Short story
The monotone countdown began. The 10 ton structure sat glimmering in the Key-West sunlight. The radio chatter began to stop. “Fifteen, Fourteen, Thirteen, Twelve, Eleven, Ten, Nine, Eight, ignition sequence start.” Raymond could not hear the rest. The craft violently began to shake. A heavy bass tone rung from the depths of the craft. The liquid oxygen fuel ignited with a massive red fire cloud. The flames were sucked within the base of the structure. The count was now on 0 however the crew could not hear the radio over the violent reactions of the engine. At the negative four count the craft lifted, First ten feet, then twenty, then the tower was clear soon after that. The craft rose a greater and greater speeds. Breaking the barrier of sound. “That was some little jolt”
spoke Raymond. Ray flips various switches preparing for the next stage. The three manned crew prepares for OSS(Orbital Sleep Systems). As the crew travels for six months they will be asleep for the entire trip. As they step into the pods the countdown begins. At zero the massive liquid oxygen fires in a jolting motion setting a telemetry for the crew.

Raymond’s heavy eyes slowly begin to open. He is pleased to see paul the missions captain moving about within the module. Raymond spoke to paul, “wow six months of sleep, and I still feel like shit.” “The OSS will do that to you” “Should we wake up dave?” Raymond asked. “He will wake up on his own, but you can help me establish a radio signal with mission control. This signal keeps relapsing in and out.” Raymond Takes his seat. “Lets take a look out these windows first.” The large steel covered windows slid with much friction and vibration. Staring back at the crew was it, the red plant! The three crew members were to travel down the the planet and replace the soviet crew already on the IMS or International Mars Station. Raymond hailed  signal from the Station. “Good morning comrade, this is group system 576 here to relieve you of your duty.”
The soviet responded, “How vas da ride, a little bumby” the soviet chuckled in a heavy russian accent unlike the rest of the crew.. “ You are clear for landing system 576, we are glad to see you”. “ Any contact with earth?” Paul asked. “ We have some bad news” the soviet replied.

The full awakened crew strapped into the cockpit begun the decent towards the red planet. In total orbital free fall with no control of the craft they lowered. building more and more speed. The Altitude meeter reduced. “Three, Two, One” A massive push in the opposite direction. The reentry pyros, fired with 2 million pound thrust. As the thrust backed off, the craft slowly lowed the remaining three thousand feet. A swift clinch of metal as the arms locked together to complete the docking process.Paul looked at the crew and smiled, “We are hear, finally” After a few beeps and buzzes the airtight locking door opened sighlently to the IMS, The other side just 2 cosmonauts, Yuri and Sergey. Both Yuri and Sergey pale as ghosts stared back into the eyes of the american crew. David shouted ”Good morning, we are so glad to meet you and to be aboard the IMS” The american crew continued into the IMS, hugging the soviet crew. Yuri shot Sergey a look. They whispered amongst them selves. “Do they not know” “How could they know” “They need to know”. “Have you been able to reach a signal from Houston or Moscow” asked Raymond. Yuri patted Ray on the back, “please sit, all of you, much needs to be explained”

“Twenty-seven days ago it began. We began getting radio relays from moscow telling of the american threat. A terrorist attack on moscow occurred within soviet russia. America was to blame, how ever it was never proven. Russia responded Air attacks to america and the whole world turned for the worse. The last transmission we received from moscow, it read “Do not trust the NASA astronauts” the rest was garbled” We have lost all communications since then. Seven days ago these images were relayed to us by scavenger seven a satellite above earth. The pictures show 3 distinct cloud masses over the us and 5 distinct cloud masses of western russia. These cloud masses were those put out by a nuclear explosion. So quickly terroristic accusations turned to total joint destruction.” The american crew back away, and stared at each other for a good few minuets. They looked back at the soviets in disbelief and anger. Paul spoke for the group,”it would be in both our interests if you left this IMS as quickly as possible.” Paul turned back to raymond as he began to whimper for his now deceased relatives and friends back on earth. Yuri and Sergey both moved the shuttle, which was to return them to what as left of earth. Sergey moved to on of the various control panels,” Im stirring the Oxygen tanks 3 and 4 before we leave, they are low. As the button was pressed a loud ripping noise rang through the ship. As if bare sheet metal and steel was being ripped easily like a piece of paper. The IMS jolted around, and artificial gravity was lost. David poked his head out of the room where the american sat. He shot Sergey a look, screaming “what was that!” Paul pushed out of the room “what in the hell did you just do” Sergey responded” I stirred the tan----paul cut him off “you what, I need a damage report” Back up generators kicked in restoring gravity. The americans kept hawkeyed on theSoviets, David said “you were the last to tough the panel, what happened, you have stirred those tanks , 300 times and it just decides to go faulty now, and how convenient for it to go faulty just as you were leaving.” Your not suggesting that we, on no, we would never” Yuri responded. “They hell you would” Raymond answered. The computer responded with a damage report. Leaks in main oxygen supply. Crew survival rate 0% in 4 hours. “We have four hours to live” whispered David. Sergey between is fellow crew mates stood up. We would never sabotage this IMS, not because our countries are at war with each other, they are on earth we are on mars, to different set of values, we need each other to survive, now more then ever.” Paul nodded. An hour proceed with silence in the ship, each crew packed and boarded the shuttle home. At 0900 hours they were ready to leave. Each party still disgruntled with each other, watched there backs. As they packed into the shuttle the locking doors enclosed them. A light push and the shuttle left the station and pushed the craft into mars orbit. Yuri turned to Paul, “to get home faster we could you LWS.” Paul answered back, your crazy Light warp speed has never been tested  before!” Mid sentence Yuri flipped the switch, with out crews consent. They were wisked away at the speed of light. In only 3 min the capsule reached earth. Paul disoriented from the speed, passed out along with Sergey. the capsules quick decent through earths atmosphere was approaching. Faster and fast the capsule fell, almost ripping the craft apart. Staging pyros begun, spinning the craft in the opposite direction. parachutes opened. Splash down. The capsule hit the water at roughly 30 miles per hour. The windowless cockpit revealed little to the crew before opening the gate. Yuri pulled the hatch release button, and the door blew off. An orange swirl of death and destruction over took the crew. Black and red clouds as far as the human eye could see or the soul could bare. The Earths oceans was slightly boiling and vapor was rising, black rain was failing.

Raymond's eyes opened, “How was that six month sleep, welcome to mars, what did you dream about?”.

MGinnetti Immigration

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3822143/Historygraph.pages

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
I am surprised, that during some internal conflict within the united states we still accepted a lot of immigrants, such as during the civil war.  Times such as the great depression seemed quite obvious on why we did not accept immigrants

  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I think within the next 2 decades immigration will die down.  The trend seems to be that for a period of time that there is a lot of immigration and then it stops.

  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
Our group particularly like the example of the graph with the images on it, so we tried to re-create that example just with our dates and instead f putting pictures on the top we made each bar  a picture.

  • What parts of group work were challenging?
The hardest part was coming up with a way to visually represent the data, the easy part was getting the a reasons why it happend.

  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
I would choose to maybe make the graph look a little more presentable and easier to read.

Humanities Portfolio 2011

Posted by Matthew Ginnetti in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Starting sophomore year I was skeptical on if I would like History and English. I used to not find any interest in English and History. Until this year I had the thought that every history and English class was the same as the year before. I though that we were just going to read books and that is it. Boy was I wrong.

History class was different from the first day. Since we started. I used to just have US history, world history is so much better. Mr. Block opened our minds to the world. Because of this I have done some of the best wok of my life. My paper were more interesting, and had better ideas. My favorite project we have completed is the Monologue Project. I put so many months of work into this project. In my point of view it is the best work I have done.

English class was also very different. We did not just read books we discussed them. We found the deep issues and provided solution for them. Because Mr. Block taught both English and History, we could connect both classes. We could relate the books to history and history to the books. Some of my best creative work has come out of my Poetry Project, where we all created poetry and artwork.

Both combined for History and English we combined our creative skills for the art in the open festival. We had help from the Leah Stein Dance Company.  It was a creative performance at the Schuylkill river.

In the Valley

Posted by Matthew Ginnetti in World History - Block on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 1:48 pm
"In the Valley" is about a young Sergeant named Johnathon Calloway. Sgt. Calloway has seen war before but nothing that can prepare him for the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan, one the deadliest places on earth (told by CNN). Sgt. Calloway changes from being an anxious soldier, to a gritty leader.

"In the Valley is also about a teenage Afghan boy named Mohammed. Mohammed struggles to stay neutral between the US and the Taliban. His friends join the Taliban and try to recruit him, yet Mohammed manege's to keep his points of view.

Characters
Sgt. Calloway- A well developed military soldier who has seen action in Iraq but not in Afghanistan.

Mohammed- a sixteen year old Afghan boy who is caught living in the Korengal valley.

Returning soldiers/Helicopter passengers- Returning to the Korengal valley for there second and third tours of duty.

Private Jackson- a new recruit who has never been in battle yet.

Macko- Hum-v Driver

Act 1 Scene 1

(Mohammed sits in a small tiled floor room with a large window to the left.)

Mohammed
To many of us are being taken. Promises of wealth and a magnificent after life. They took Deqhan today. Lured in by there false tellings. There numbers are growing, now it only may be a few thousand of the Taliban scattered through the hills, but there still unorganized and

(pauses as noise of helicopter flies over his house.)

They are unorganized and have no training. When was the last time a faction in history succeeded in overthrowing a country

(Pauses again to the sound of Humvees getting closer, Mohammad gets up and looks out side of the window a convoy of 5 hummers drives down the street, when the noise stops, mohammed still looking out the window sees five us troops kick down a door and raid a house, Mohammed backs from the window and continues writing.)

I have not been to school in over 4 months now, I am now almost to scared to leave the house, every time I’m approached sometime by Quadaff, sometimes by Gamal, but now by Deqhan. My only friend swept up by the Taliban. I warned him pushing him to stay with me, but he ran off with the largest group of goons on the earth. Who is next me, no, for to long have I watched

(Mohammed flips back a couple pages in his journal reading something, he then returns and begins writing again.)

Four and a half weeks ago I wrote that the Taliban teaching ten year olds in the school. Ten year olds being brain washed.

Act 1 Scene 2

(Sgt. Calloway is strapped in to a chair with 4 other men in the cargo bay of a chinook helicopter.)

So yall been here before?

(A blank stare came from the rest of the soldiers.)

Wer supposed to see some kick ass fighting up here. Can’t wait to see some action im pumped in Iraq I got me at least twenty kills, Dumb ass Taliban.

(Still nobody said anything, Awkward pause)

I heard this place is intense, surprised we have not been shoo-

(The helicopter dramatically pitches to the left)

What the f*** was that? An RPG?!?!?!?!?

(Two more dramatic movements, over the radio from the cockpit he hears airstrike commands, as the chinook pulls away from the cliff a massive bright explosion rips through the mountain.)

Yea thats what im talkin about kicken some ass

(The red light on the back of the Chinook lights the soldiers get ready, Calloway peers out the window)

Thats it what the hell is that its a bunch of sand bags?

(The crew turn to Calloway and stare at him)

What do you mean how dare I say that? The previous soldiers have been here for a year and this is what they've built”

(The back latch of the helicopter opens
Gun fire begins to ricochet on the out side of the Chinook)

Act 1 Scene 3
(Sergeant  Calloway speaks in to a camera in a video diary in the Bunker, the noise of Artillery is being launched is in the background.)

First impressions, not what I hoped. Seeing 7 dead and 5 wounded carried to the Chinook. Looking at this piece of shit its not much. Just a couple dozen sand bags, a small building and a couple huts. Training.....What training, Nothing can prepare you for this. First day 1 wounded, saw Sergeant  Ellsworth shot right in front of me. But what is this.... war.......no. I don’t know what this is. No amount of strength can prepare you for what I saw. I’ve been kneeling behind a sand bag for the past 15 hours. Shooting at what I can’t see.....but they can see me. I’ve been here not even for a day and i’m pissen my self. In the briefing commanders said we would be alone, stranded, no support.......we are the support defending the valley for what purpose, its a fucking desert. They watch us. The Taliban, stubborn as they are hate us, defending there land which we are invading, A land which is worthless to what we are fighting for. We should just leave. There is no reason we are here.
(The sound of gunfire and mortars erupt, Sgt. Calloway gets his gun and leaves the building.)

Act 1 Scene 4

Mohammed
Made it through another night. Ever since the Americans started to push down the hill the fighting has seemed to get tougher. Every day we are constantly being attacked. But I see the point, our village is full of Taliban, Dozens of them, if I did not live here with my family and friend, I would wish that that village gets flattened, well it basically already is.

(Mohammed glances out of the window)

I cower under my bed on an hourly basis, its the only place where I feel safe, kind of stupid huh, I am neutral in this war. Last night Deqhan came by with a bag, He shoved me aside and hid it in our closet, he told me not to look, and if I told anybody about it I would become the Taliban’s enemy. I had to see what was in the bag, but I’m to afraid, I can’t look,
(Mohammed throws down his pencil, and rubs his fists in his eyes as if he is crying. Mohammed gets up and walks over to the closet and picks up the bag, it was heavy and Mohammed struggled to lift it back to his table, he peered inside)

Weapons, its full of weapons, Im hiding the Taliban’s war machine. I am on of them.

Act 1 Scene 5

Have not done this in a while, No time. Constantly we are all doing work, either building, digging or shootin, no time for anything else. The only thing that changed was the wounded, 7, 3 dead. 3 dead!
(Rubs his eyes and face)

All stronger then me. Who’s to say I’m not next. Strength means shit out here. No amount of explosives or guns can stop these people, these, these animals. The Korengal Valley, the gates of death. Only Misery and pain is visible for miles around us, Tomorrow's we draw straws. Who goes down the hill for recon. I did not turn out so good for the last group, so I heard. Two died the driver wounded, they had to he evaced, with a heli, they said if we get picked we have to drive down the hill side and look for suspicious activity, Suspicious activity my ass, every body looks the same, I can’t tell who is the enemy and and who is neutral until its to late. But they want that, they like to be sneaky bastards. Hope I come back to make another one of these. Slams lid of computer closed.

Act 1 Scene 6

Sgt. Calloway
Of course I would get picked to do this.
(slams the door of the hum-v)

90% chance we get an IED shoved up our ass.I am so done with this shit. We are dead. WOW WOW Stop! play this CD it sets the mood.

(Gimme shelter by the rolling stones begins to play.)

So briefing said we should drive as far as we can, what does that mean. Well I know what it means, just does that mean we are guaranteed to get attacked, Shit!

(The hum-v drive for about an ten minuets through the valley when the driver stops.)

Why did u stop?
Bad feeling, psh I don’t give a shit, we are sitting ducks out here. Get a move on it Macko.

(The Hum-v drives slowly, gradually picking sup speed.)

Faster dude I don’t want to get Ambushed.

(A small IED explodes 30 yards in front of the hum-v damaging the vehicle.)

Act 1 Scene 7

Sgt. Calloway
It's my fault, all my fault. Yesterdays recon down the hill went terrible. It was the same shit that all of the other recons deal with. The guilt is just to much. Being in command when a soldier dies, just can't take it.

(Takes off hat and places it in lap dramatically)

I see these new kids commen in every week. There not ready for this shit. Private Johnson was not ready that's why he died. These new recruits there just to vulnerable. The don't watch there backs good enough. The don't no what to expect out here. There not trained enough It all my fault Johnson died I should have never have to him to come with us.

(Calloway stands up from the seat and leans on the wall with his hands and head)

Not to say that I just wasted 50 thousand dollars worth of explosives on the guys that killed him. God damn. This war is just a waste of money I mean 50 thousand dollars on a handful of guys. Johnson was 21, so young. And just to think  I have to do this shit again in three days.

Act 1 Scene 8

Mohammed
The Americans keep pushing down through the valley. They know there are Taliban in my town and they will not leave until they are all dead. Over the past week more and more troops flood the city. Every day, two or three times a day.

(Sighs)

This is never going to end. Every time group of hum-v’s come down the hill the end up retreating. The Taliban have an endless supply of troops and weapons. Yet so do the americans, they come down the valley at random times and raid the Taliban’s shacks. Three days ago I was walking to get milk. When I heard a hum-v. I tried to run but they were raiding the house next door. I was caught in the cross fire as I tried to hide. There was sol..sol...soldier

(Begins to whimper)

right next to me, shooting. I was caught in combat. I looked up to the americans, and to see him get shot,

(Begins to cry)

Shot in the throat, and to struggle on the ground, The medic cam over but there was no hope. There is no hope. I can just remember name on his bloody uniform.

(Tries to pronounce the name)

Sa sar sergeant ca ca ca Calloway Sgt. Calloway.
The poor soldier who was shot in the neck, on the 11th of january 2011, for we should all respect him.

The purpose of are video was to help Ms.Gierke’s friend Noah conjugate verbs. We Split are jobs into three parts, Visuals, The Script, and Filming. We tried are best to break down and teach the changing of verbs in past and present tenses. We were told we should do this by explaining what we did over the summer, so that Noah could develop a deeper understanding on past and present tense verbs. We hope that Noah has learned a lot from are video and that he has found it easier to communicate to others!
