Madison Harris Capstone

Posted by Madison Harris in Capstone · Giorgio/Shagin · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 1:06 am

For my Capstone, I wanted to find a way to have an outside event for students to interact and have fun with, but also raise money for the SLA Girls Basketball Team to put money towards them getting new apparel. I believe that this will make the team confident and bring unity to their apparel. I came up with the idea of running a basketball tournament and raise money by charging students from the school to play.

The final decision I made to do for my Capstone was to have my basketball tournament at Taney on April 30th, 2018. I did not charge students to play, but leading up to the tournament I ran a bake sale to draw attention for students to buy items, but I also had a sign up for the tournament at the bake sale. This raised money, but I also had a sense of what students were going to play. I advertised the tournament often on social media which had to word spread fast.

The day of the tournament I prepared by having a speaker so people watching would be entertained as long as the players. I wanted the tournament to be chill and for the students to have fun so it was very light on the rules, but it was on a time constraint so everything could flow and I did not run into the games being too long or short.

I believe that the tournament was fun for the students because it was just a day to have fun with peers outside of school. One piece I wish I could have done better was not overwhelming myself at once, but do one thing at a time in a spaced out amount of time. I am happy that I have completed my Capstone it has taught me so much about to overcome challenges and yet still benefits others.

This is a collage of the day of my tournament along with one of the flyers I created. I had three games. Freshman vs. Sophomores and winner faces the Upperclassmen. The Sophomores are Winners. Congrats Class of 2020!!

“How To... Organize a Basketball Tournament.” Basketball Manitoba, 2018, 22 Jan. 2018 <www.basketballmanitoba.ca/2006/07/how-to-organize-basketball-tournament.html.>

I found this website/blog helpful for my capstone because it is talks specifically about how to organize a basketball tournament and making sure to be on top of the planning without leaving anything out and just having a flawless event per say. This is important for me and to have a successful capstone because it helps me have an idea/ plan of making sure I have everything and stay on track with my capstone without having spaces between the process and being upfront with the plan. The successful for the tournament will be having a plan prior to the big day. By following the checklist and the tips will help be a reference from start to finish from my capstone.

McGroarty, Kent Page. “Benefits of Teamwork in Sports.” Healthy Living, EDGE Publications , 22 Jan. 2018. <https://healthyliving.azcentral.com/benefits-teamwork-sports-1119.html .>

I researched the importance of sports and the importance it brings to teamwork and having the ability to work with others. This ties into my capstone because there has to be teamwork and collaboration in order for this tournament to be exciting and bring enjoyment to the players. It also teaches a life lesson of showing how if you are trying to get anywhere in life collaboration and understanding others is important to become successful in life. It also helps with the interactions between others and understanding everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and how it will  make the team successful and fun.

Frei, Terry. March 1939: before the Madness: the Story of the First NCAA Basketball Tournament Champions. Lyons Press, 2016. 23 Jan. 2018

This book is about how a team prepared before the March Madness tournament and the bonding they had before the big day. This made me think about how my teams may prepare before they enter the tournament. I wonder how the teams will prepare and how this will make the tournament engaging and entertaining for the players. I know that the collaboration will be successful and I hope their preparation is a well because that is what makes any team successful and the importance of it. It is better than teams who just comes out there without having any chemistry and limited collaboration.

“The Complete Event Planning Guide.” Membership Software - Wild Apricot, 23 Jan. 2018. <www.wildapricot.com/articles/how-to-plan-an-event.>

Talks about the major qualities of event planning and how it will make your event successful. Without a plan there is no event. It only cause confusion, chaos, and stress to make an event work at the last minute. That would also produce a crappy event that looks rushed and unorganized. Others will notice this to and it create confusion and chaos with the crowd. Planning ahead can make anyone successful and on top of the game no matter what.  Since I know I am not an event planner this website gave me the instructions of what to do to be successful along with my event.

Because I want my tournament to be engaging and having the SLA community involved, this website touches on how extracurricular and events are important in schools because it can build on having new school traditions, leadership within different students, and how it defines the student body. It shows me how important it is for SLA to keep thriving and make school fun outside of school per say. This helped me identify my purpose for my capstone to make sure that it is strong enough and hopefully involving a great amount of the student body. Also involving the core values that pertain to the project and the even within itself.

This website explained how to keep School Spirit going and the ideas to do so. This produces excitement and engagement from the student body along with something for them to look forward to. School can be seen as boring or routined to different students, but bringing something new to the environment which causes them to research and explore what it is about. School spirit is very important because it causes hype around the school and how to explore outside of school but pertaining to the school. Everything needs something new once and a while and bringing the spirit to school will change the view of basic and casual understanding but newness and excitement.

Since I am in High School and I don’t plan events , this blog has helped me understand how to do so on my level. Being an event planner you have to have great communication skills with talking on the phone and with having interactions with others.Having great communication skills show your professionalism and confidence in what you are trying to portray and the importance of it. Being involved in clubs and sports is a way that event planner can be exposed because it shows how your involvement is there. It shows that being involved in one area can help you to create your own by seeing the positives and negatives in another.

Smeds, Mia. “School Events Are Important for Community Spirit.” Justice Through Education, 12 Sept. 2016, 25 Jan. 2018.< www.justed.org/school-events-are-important-for-community-spirit/.>

This talks about the importance of school events and how they reflect upon the school. It shows that having school events makes the school unified between all grades along with teachers and students. The community spirit is something that is stress relievers for kids so everything is not all about work projects, etc, but we can have fun and still within the school environment. It also shows how the school works together and brings collaboration within each and every aspect of the school and how everything is connected into one system and the everyone's goal is the same with bringing engagement to the school body.

Glick , Sarah. “Success Stories: Brilliant Event Planning.” I Do PR, Jan. 2014, 26 Jan. 2018.

<www.idopr.com/wedding/success-stories-brilliant-event-planning/ .>

This helped me understand what makes an event successful and reading the different stories. They all had in common that they prepared before the event which was important. It also made me realize that everyone is not perfect so there is always going to be a flaw in the event ,but finding ways to overcome it is the way because those flaws can be unseen and no one would even know. Events can be successful or completely off and it is all about how much time and effort you put into the event is what will be produced and seen by others.

Carlton, Duane. “Divided by Diversity Documentary.” YouTube, Vermont PBS, 4 July 2016, 26 Jan. 2018. <www.youtu.be/fqGRZ7KrbSI .>

The documentary was about how basketball use to be divided based upon race and not talent. This made me wonder what can I question about my own project and establishing my main purpose for the project. What is the cause of having the game? How will shift the players mind on what their goal is and the importance of having teamwork and collaboration while playing. I want everyone to have fun, but take something from and apply a life lesson to it because we do everything for a purpose and not just because. Everything has a meaning and worth recognition of fighting for if it is worth it.

Advanced Essay #4

Posted by Madison Harris in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 1:53 pm

My goals for this essay was to show how School-Prison-Pipeline is a form of violence even though children put themselves in these situations. This essay made me explore more about the School-Prison-Pipeline because I was limited on knowledge about the system as a total, but through this essay, it helped me understand the situation better. I think that this is something I am pleased to end the 3rd quarter strong with.

Essay:

Let Us Graduate When we come across violence or unjust acts, we want them to be corrected. It is not fair to the society or personally being yourself experiencing the violence. Sometimes trying to fix an issue of violence leads to missed opportunities for ones who want to become right with the system and to become successful. We as humans are always content when unjust actions are taken care of, but we never think of the aftermath with someone’s life after the action. In this essay specifically, I want to discuss the topic of School to Prison Pipeline. I find that this is a form of violence to children because after they serve their time, there is really no life for them after juvenile detention or jail.

School to Prison Pipeline is an issue that is not really talked about or something that the society is not really concerned about. According to the information found from the Truthloader show podcasted on Youtube it stated: “ Every year in the United States, an estimated 250,000 children under the age of 18 are tried, sentenced or imprisoned as adults. And of these, around 100,000 actually end up in adult jails and prisons, with many spending time in solitary confinement.” When I read this I automatically thought how are kids learning when they are behind bars? This pondered my mind for a while. I began to realize that they are not having any system of education being brought to them while they are imprisoned. With kids being behind bars and not in school, it labels them as being dropouts from school. After kids are finished serving their time and learned the lesson of committing a violent act, they are back into society. They will come back with no sense of education, but only how to survive in jail which is not their life anymore. With children being dropouts and missing out on their education at the given time, it is harder for them to want to go back to school and gain their education after being put out of school at the designated time they should have graduated. I personally believe that this is something society needs to pay closer attention to knowing that us children are the future for the world and the society we live in. If we are behind bars and do not gain an education, what is going to happen to the world and the jobs that are ran? I would fathom to believe that they will not be ran or barely in existence because children will be unemployed due to not having the minimum of at least a high school diploma. Isn’t this considered more violence than rather letting them gain their education? It is understood that when someone commits a crime or does something unjust to the society, their actions should definitely be handled, but we never fully think about what affects it has on the person who wants to be successful children because that is always on our minds.

This situation has been going on for over 10 years and it has not been getting better, but instead it has been getting worse. I believe that the larger idea of this act is simply that this s a form of violence. To make this more direct, it is a form of violence because instances like this are keeping children away from their education while they are still young. Even though I do believe there should be punishments for actions that are not just, I think that authorities should be more sensitive with children because after they serve their time they have so much to live for. This would conclude to less poverty rates and more kids staying in school to gain higher education to be successful in the world. This will give the world a sense of ease when children develop as young adults and take on jobs that were profound by people who believe they are the only ones who can work in the field they work in. If us children are not the future generation than who is?

The Man He is Today

Posted by Madison Harris in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 9:59 pm

Reflection: This project was unique for me. I went at least two days with my laptop being in complete Arabic and not understanding what across my screen until I got it fixed. I know that this has limited me to having my interview completed and polished on time, but I have found a way to still get what was needed to be done. My objective for this project was to tell this story of my dad and how he was raised which made him into the man he is today.

The Man He is Today

“My childhood was different than a lot of my friends when I was growing up,” my father says. Martin J. Harris was born into a huge family from West Oak Lane, Philadelphia. He lived with his parents, six siblings with him being the youngest (which makes 7 of them in total), and his cousin along with his aunt. At the age of 14, he lost his parents due to a tragic accident. “I think that with me losing my parents at a young age made me realize that I had to grow up faster than my friends and my peers around me”. My father then had to grow up under the rules of his older sister and followed her guidance as if she was his mother. “I give my sister a lot of respect and credit for the times she raised me and my other siblings, later on, ” he says. His sister became his hero and that is someone my father definitely looks up to and has the utmost respect for. Growing up is one of the toughest times for a child and when you have to grow up faster, it makes you see the world differently. You become wiser and mature faster than your peers which set you apart from them.

At the age of 22, my father graduated from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. He was the first out of his siblings to graduate from college and earned his bachelors and masters degree. “What kept me motivated to achieve the goals I have was to stay positive and saying I can do this instead of saying I can’t”. After c, later on, married his college sweetheart Kim Ford. Later on, they had two new additions to their family: Madison and Martin J. Harris II. “I never wanted a big family,” my father says. “I think that coming from a huge family like I did and being the youngest, I would never have a big family because there was limited attention I received while growing up and when my parents got to me they were tired”. My father definitely gives my brother and I his full attention when we are around him. He is very involved in our lives and I will say that my father and I definitely has a close connection. “ I always wanted to have a strong relationship with my children,” he says. “ I know that having this bond with my children will benefit them as they grow up knowing that I could not have this type of bond with my parents”. My father is always tentative in his presence with being in my brother and I’s life. He always supports me whether that is coming to my basketball game or being the ear I need to talk to. Learning from experiences growing up makes you realize the target that is on your back to become successful and achieve your goals when sometimes you have a different start than others. It also gives you a chance to become the hero to those who look up to you and be there for them knowing that it will benefit them.

“I wish that I had a brother closer to my age while growing up,” my father says. Before he answered I asked him if there is anything he could change about his childhood what would it be. “Throughout all of the experiences of my growing up, I would never change the people I have experienced them with”. This stuck with me throughout the interview because us humans are always going to have situations and lessons we have to go through because that is a part of growing up, but the people that have seen us with the issues as we are growing up and has been there for us, we can never change that. “Those are relationships that have grew strong with me and will never change”.”It will always be a fine memory in my mind and that is something that’s there forever.” he says. My father is continuing to be the strong, faithful, and loving brother, father, and husband he has always been for my family and I. His childhood has definitely molded him into the man he is today for the better because he took his situations and setbacks as targets and goals he wanted to accomplish which made his successful. “Anything is accomplishable during the roughest times in life, it’s either you take on the challenges and achieve them or you drown in the hardships”. -Martin J.Harris

NBA v WNBA (The Fight For The Winning Lay-Up)

Posted by Madison Harris in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 1:12 pm

Intro: For my essay, I explored the topic of basketball and the gender identities. It is hard for women to create an identity for themselves in sports especially very popular sports like basketball. Basketball is an identity that is most seen to be with men and not particularly women. I wanted to express the facts and I how I feel about this situation. If I could change anything about this paper, I would probably add more of my opinion in the paper and more of it makes me feel even though I explain some of it but probably more.

NBA v. WNBA

The sports industry is something that was always branded by the face of men for a long period of time. It was hard for women to come into this industry without issues pertaining to gender roles and the segregation between men and women. From this the WNBA was created which is the Women’s National Basketball Association. The identity of basketball has always been attached to the specimen of a male. The NBA was originally founded in the 1946 and 50 years later in 1996 the WNBA was founded. This means that the NBA is way older than the WNBA which made the sport of basketball molded in the image of just being a male’s sport. Women are trying to gain their own identity in the basketball industry which is very hard due to them using a male’s face of sport to boost their identity and wanting everyone to be supportive and acceptable to this.

The WNBA are still fighting to be viable in the society of sports. In areas like attendance of fans. The WNBA averages 7,318 fans in attendance to games whereas to the NBA, they average 17,319 in game attendance. New York Times explored the viewing WNBA games and have made observation stating: “But as its 20th season gets underway, the W.N.B.A.’s modest attendance and television viewership (just below 200,000 on ESPN’s networks last season) illuminate a stubborn imbalance between men’s and women’s professional leagues, adding to the expanding debate about the place of women’s sports in society.” The emphasis of gender identity is something that is still being put into place by woman in sports and also the players in the WNBA. One of the founders Adam Silver, which is now the NBA's commissioner quotes: “As much as we’ve done in lending the league our name,” he said, “the people who have been in the sports business for a long time, and I’m one of them, historically underestimated the marketing it takes to launch a new property.” This quote gave much insight on the understanding of how the WNBA are underestimated and they are not holding the fans attention into helping them create the identity of basketball.  Even down to the salaries there is a major gap between the NBA and WNBA. The average NBA salary is $4.9 million whereas to the WNBA their salary averages to $72,000. That is no way near how much NBA players make. They would make over $1.5 million dollars overseas which is 15 times as much as they make now. WNBA players like Maya Moore, Skylar Diggins, and Swin Cash gain more money due to the endorsement they receive with many sports brands like nike, under armour, etc. The endorsements do not endorse all WNBA players which has many WNBA players questioned on to who they are and others not even knowing who they are. I asked several people in the SLA community, my family, and my friends if they could at least name three WNBA players off of the top of their head and same for the NBA. There was much hesitation to even name at least three WNBA players but when it came to the NBA, that was very natural off of the tongue. This ensures me off the identity of basketball and how us as a society are very informative with the NBA and knew players immediately when asked, but as for the WNBA it is very hard to even name at least one player or one team.

The identity of a woman is seen mostly with dance, the fashion industry, and also makeup and beauty. At a young age, I was not very interested in those things while growing up. I was like the tomboy/ a little girly type of girl. I was very sporty and involved with sports. In the fifth grade, I found my passion for basketball. I started out just learning how to even make one lay-up to now starting for my high school's basketball team. My inspiration to play has came from the WNBA and watching my favorite players like: Skylar Diggins, Maya Moore, and Elena Delle Donne. I became very attracted to watching the WNBA , but I found myself like society attending to watching more NBA than WNBA. I really don’t why it have dawned on me to do this especially because I am female that plays basketball. “Nobody discusses the WNBA. Nobody seems especially interested in the WNBA. If a basketball league falls in the summer and nobody cares, is it still a basketball league?”... Jeff Pearlman.

Advanced Essay #2// The Unspoken Voice

Posted by Madison Harris in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9:06 am
 Introduction:

Writing this essay it has shown me that I can be confident as a writer with learning new styles and techniques. Goals that I set for myself with this essay was showing the emotions and feelings that I have felt with not having a voice. Numerous of people are not heard. They are seen as a background person and not looked as they have anything relevant to say. In this essay, I have talked about my experiences of not being heard and tied that into literacy as showing that I have a language within myself that I only know about.  I think that I did a good job with showing how it has made me realize that everything is not for everyone and I feel great about this essay. Something that I would improve on is making sure I do not write as if I am talking. With the help of my peer reviewers those issue were resolved before submitting this Final Essay. I hope you enjoy my essay and it makes you feel different on how all voices need to be heard and they can be relevant throughout life and literacy.

I come in. Everyday to a world where I am not being heard. Heard from my friends, heard from my family, just not heard from anyone. My words are vivid. Something that can help you throughout your day, make you smile, and just something you need to hear. It is shown that a person that is mainly quiet or that is often alone; they are the ones that always have what you are looking for. But I believe that they are overlooked. This is due to the fact that we as individuals believe we have the answer to every problem and don’t really care what someone else may have to say.  It is hard trying to tell someone something that may help them in a way they are looking for, but not everyone is going to listen. My words are something that would provide help to others, but I know that others may not be able to handle that. At a young age I knew that I had the gift of helping others and that I cared for people. It is in my nature to care for people and to help them with being successful. I starting realizing this as I became older and I began to become overlooked or my thoughts were not being heard by others.

Back when I was in middle school, I did not particularly fit in with the other girls. My parents knew at an early age that I was different and there was always going to be something different about me. I would always try to join the conversations at the lunch table saying, “Yeah guys, we should try helping around the school or something so we can get more merits from the teachers so we can all go on that big trip” and it would become super quiet immediately after my words. But, it's always that one person who doesn’t acknowledge it at all and then changes the conversation as if my information was not helpful. It made me feel as if I am not relating to the people I considered my “friends”.  It was as if I was in  this different world with a different language that only I could gain from and this wasn’t for everyone. I became more of a loner because I was the only one that would listen to my own advice. It made me become stronger within myself because I started to gain the sense of literacy by knowing my thoughts and feelings were mainly for me to gain from. Those who were really open to listening to what I would have to say whether my opinion or to benefit them to become more successful were the ones who I noticed became the closet within my circle. I was often told: “Madison, thank you for sharing what you have shared with me because it really has helped me”.  I learned to share my ideas and thoughts within myself and it has helped me personally to become successful and smart. This is something I do not want to do. But who else is going to listen to me but myself?

I began to realize that because people may view me as a background person  I would not have much to say or something relevant to say. Reading the story The Apartheid of Children’s Literature, it illustrates that African- Americans in stories are mainly viewed as background characters within the story, but do not carry major roles throughout the story. The Author of this observation Christopher Myers comments; “Perhaps this exclusivity, in which children of color are at best background characters, and more often than not absent, is in fact part of the imaginative aspect of these books.” This is telling me that in stories, African American voices are not being heard in our children's books which shows that in real life, African American voices are not being heard as a whole.  This piece of literacy shows that as an African American, society holds us from our speech and we are not being heard so we have voices/ opinions within our own group. This has tied into my literacy of not being heard by others and how I have to know that everything is not for everyone.  I had to learn that the main advice that is golden is the one that you know that is true within yourself.

The Crisis and Concerns

Posted by Madison Harris in Creative Writing · Giknis · x2 Band on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 11:57 am

My story is a fictional story about how a son faces some problems that hits him at home but helps him realize what is going on in the world and how he has to take a stand. Something that inspired me to write this type of story was the book “Between the World and Me” which shows multiple essays, written as a letter to his son, (main character is his father Coates) where he confronts the idea of race in America and how it has shaped American history, very much so at the cost of black lives. It talks about many incidents that happened: (Trayvon Martin, Micheal Brown, etc)

Here is a link to my website where you can find the story: http://mharris609.wixsite.com/website.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope it makes you feel a type of an emotion or think about it differently and that you enjoy it!

Posted by Madison Harris in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 4:37 pm

Have you ever had a day that completely caught you by surprise? In days like that, things happen that you never would have imagined. When you have days like that and you wake up after a nights sleep, you wonder if you were dreaming about the events that shook your life the day before. I don’t particularly like those days because of how they make feel, and all of the unanswerable questions that they cause to flow through my mind.

It was a day in January year of 2014. I had basketball practice. I had to be there before 6:30 am. “Madison, you are not going to basketball practice” my mom said. I looked at her with a distinct face. The puzzling statement ran across my face. “Why wasn’t I not going?” I asked her. I go to basketball practice every morning. Will my coach even care? Am I in trouble? “I will tell you later, text your coach and tell her you are not coming for personal reasons.” she told me. What personal reasons I wondered. With crud in my eyes barely looking at her I said “okay”. It was weird. I just simply went back to sleep. We usually go to the train together but today she didn’t go with me. She left me alone. It was a cold winter morning. It was a Wednesday. I went on with my day proceeded with going to going to my classes. I was in my freshman year at SLA. After my last class of the day, it was time to go to TFI. I got a call from my dad. “Hey Madison I am going to meet you at TFI after your class is over, I will call you back when I am here”. For what? I was confused or should I say puzzled the whole entire day seemed crazy. First my mom, then my dad. Everyone was all over the place. After TFI I waited patiently for my parents to come. The schedule changes were messing up my normal routine. First I would walk to Suburban from TFI and catch the train home and then do homework. “Madison I’m outside come to the car” my dad said when he called me back. I did not know what to think of it. I get in the car. I see the tears on my mother’s face. I didn’t know why she was crying or what was happening. I looked at her frightened. My blood boiling rising through my veins as my heart was becoming fearful. My dad came into the car. “Madison, you’re cousin was shot early this morning.” My face broke. I couldn’t believe it. I immediately broke into tears. I didn’t know how to feel about it . I did not say anything. My legs were shivering. I didn’t even ask which cousin it was when I first found out. He is still a part of me. He is very close to me. My mom use to watch him before I was around. Is this real? Or am I dreaming? My emotions were everywhere on the way to my house. I did not want to talk to anyone. I stayed to myself praying that I would see him again. I got home and just sat. I did not want to talk to anyone or discuss what I was feeling. The tears were still trickling down my face and I could not stop them. Everything was going through my mind. The fear of never seeing him again or even the fact of seeing him well again. We shared so many memories together. He wasn’t really a cousin, he was more like my big brother. I didn’t know who I can tell I felt alone. I instantly went to my best friend at the time which was Hannah. She was the only person I could really talk to about it. Her first reaction was trying to calm me down. “You will see him again” was all she kept saying to me. I didn’t want to hear what she was saying. I was filled with anger.. Who would do this to somebody? Why to my cousin? There are people out there that have no regard for human life.

Because of this event, my life has changed completely. I view my friendships differently now and I am more aware of my surroundings. But I do cautiously break boundaries with exploring new relationships because it’s worth taking the risk. “You can’t know what to expect , unless you explore it for yourself.”

For my ILP, I still help my dad around his office. This consists of me cleaning, shredding, and organizing files for my dad. I enjoy it very much because I can sit with my dad and talk to him also by working for him which is great. I am learning a lot about the working process and my experiences are going well so far. Can't wait for what I a doing new in the next 2-3 months!

For my ILP thus far, I have spent the time at the organization I work for (ARC) and just really taking the time to organize paperwork out. Things can get confusing with so many parents in this program and information can get mixed around. It is my job for a while to make sure that everything is organized and put in the proper places. I also have been shredding paperwork that is not needed anymore so that no ones information is laying around anywhere and not needed. Overall, I enjoy what I am doing this far with helping out the organization and looking forward for more opportunities I will have for being the extra hand.

My internship is at the Achieving Reunification Center (ARC).  ARC is an agency that helps parents who have had their children removed from their home for various reasons by DHS, to get reunited.  They have a number of services that are aimed a helping parents to get reunified with their children.  In my Internship, I am part of the administrative team.  I help out by answering the phones, filing out paper work, and entering data into the ARC database.  My daily assignments will be given to me by Ms. Renea Lawrence, the Office Manager. So far, I am enjoying what I do and I feel very comfortable in my environment. I'm hoping to have a great time interning there and having experience in the business world in the months to come.

Making A Close…

Posted by Madison Harris in English 1 - Giknis - A on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 2:53 pm

Looking back at this project I would like to say I am overall pleased with what I accomplished. This was an amazing project to do because I focused on what I was very passionate about. This has helped me think outside of the schools and explore issues that are happening in the world and our society.

For the Research Part, I wish I would have found more statistics, primarily in 2015 instead of 2014. I know it was just a year ago, but so much has happened within 2015 and I wish that I would have been able to capture that data. Some things I want to discover through my project on  gun violence in Philadelphia was to find out more about was how many of the families are dealing with the lost of a loved one because of this brutal action. I think that would have taken my project over the top and made the research very interesting.

The Original Research actually went well. I think I had enough people to take my survey to make a point.  Although I wish I found more information, I think I could have done an interview instead of a survey. It would have been great  to know what  a police officer or a family member who had a loved one shot or die because of gun violence felt, and how they cope with it knowing that this violent act is still taking place in our world.  But overall, I am pleased with my survey and happy that it went the way I wanted it to.

I had the impact that I was hoping for in my Agent of Change piece. A lot of people have been noticing the posters around the school, and I actually seen people taking the time out to read them and that is something I was hoping for. I think that having them around the school is something that can also impact other youth of what is going on in Philadelphia and that we need to support the movement for it to stop.

With closing, I would like to say thank you to Ms. Giknis for having everything planned accordingly and the project flowed with all of the due dates. Also for letting everyone do what they wanted to do and even giving extensions when needed so we can do what we really wanted to, and be passionate about it. I think that this will make me do more outside of this project maybe doing things in my local community to have more people aware of this situation. I may start by reaching out to the families who have suffered from the tragedy that gun violence brings, maybe by giving out care packages so they know I care.  This project was by far the best and I hope throughout my life I will have more opportunities to do things like the You and The World Project.

"Hands Up!, Guns Downs!"

Posted by Madison Harris in English 1 - Giknis - A on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 10:43 pm

With this sustained journey in finishing up my You and the World Project, I am closing this portion of the project on what I wanted to do for my Agent of Change piece. With doing my recent blog post, I did my own research and learned things about certain parts in Philadelphia that I did not know even existed which is why in my first blog post I was just so new to the project. But from then, it’s been a whole different spin on the information I now know. With thinking about doing my Agent of Change, I wanted to find a way for people to recognize the horrifying murders in Philadelphia caused by guns. With putting a little more depth into this project, recently today there was a march on Woodcrest Avenue in Philadelphia. The people were marching and singing. They held a sign saying “Taking Action To End Gun Violence” and marched on the site where a man was gunned down and killed in a robbery.  What they wanted people to take from this march was to use the gun related murder to stop other losses. How are we as the city of Philadelphia going to stop the shootings in our very own streets? With observing all of resources and space I had, I thought that it would be helpful to make SLA aware of this serious situation. With the help of my friend Ella who has a similar project as mine, we made an infographic  to show different statistics and facts about gun violence with teens and Philadelphia. We printed about 50 posters with this reliable information and put them all around SLA.

This is a picture of one the posters on a wall placed around the school!

With making an end to this project, I have learned a lot about gun violence and all of the shootings that happen in Philadelphia. After knowing  about a situation that triggers my mind, I am happy I was able to make a small contribution to this problem. This is something that I can relate to personally and many others can too. I hope people can see and take away from this project the collective need for us to gun violence..  I hope people will stop and take the time to read the posters and be aware of what is going on in the city they live in. This is nothing to be played around with. Everyone deserves to be safe and feel comfortable in the area they live in. After doing this project, I know that I can make my voice heard and help to be one of many advocates needed to end gun violence. I would love to do more outside of this project to gain other people’s attention to go along with me to say no to guns. But overall, I was happy to do this project and what I accomplished. I think this is something that everyone that everyone can see as a problem in our city . It is my hope that we will put our hands up together on this issue so that people will put their guns down. So I close this to say, do you want to live in Philadelphia or KIlladelphia?

 The City Of?...

Posted by Madison Harris in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 10:34 pm

After reading and seeing many statistics for gun control in Philadelphia in my opening Blog Post, I began opening my eyes a little more and grasping all the information I could get. I started to think more about how much gun violence is going on in Philadelphia and did a little bit more research  .  Did you know that Philadelphia is the most violent of the ten largest cities in America? Also, that a Philadelphian is four times most likely to get shot than anywhere else? With that being said, I had further questions on which areas of Philadelphia where people think they are safe as where to others some of them may be dangerous. In my quest to gather more information, I chose to do a survey (see below)..

Screenshot 2015-05-11 at 7.00.31 PM.png

I asked three questions based on the part of Philadelphia the participants lived in. After asking where the lived, I wanted to know the following: if the participants thought they were safe in their respective neighborhood, and did they know anyone that was injured by gun violence within the past two years? Some of the stories I read was horrific and terrifying. I wasn’t sure if anyone wanted their story to be read so I made it unknown because this is a very soft topic for people to talk about and I respect that. But, I decided to make a graph based on the responses I received.

The responses told me a story about our city. Out of the 37 participants that completed the survey, 43% reported that they felt safe in their neighborhood in light of the gun violence in the city.  But on the flip side of that, 52% admitted that their safety in their neighborhood depends, and 5% confirmed that they did not feel safe in their neighborhood. The majority of those surveyed feel that their safety in their neighborhood is always in jeopardy, I feel like that poor gun control is the reason for these Philadelphians to feel unsafe. On Saturday, April 27, 2015, a protest was held in South Philadelphia.   Several dozen protesters led by the Washington-based Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence singled out Firing Line Inc. for having sold, over the years, dozens of guns that later were used in crimes or in some other way ended up in the possession of law enforcement authorities. As I said in my first blog, better laws for gun control is where we should start to help people feel safe in their neighborhoods. Not feeling safe in our neighborhoods makes people not trust each other, and good relationships are not formed.  My dad often talks about how when he was growing up that all the people in his neighborhood knew each other, talked, and shared different items.  But in today’s climate, there is no trust because good relationships are not formed.  Children no longer play outside in front of their homes because there are  too many stories of children being shot in crossfire. Guns bring about fear.

In conclusion, I feel like we need to do better with knowing who has guns legally, and then find those that have them illegally.  Laws alone will not do this, but we will need help from regular people that care about this problem and the safety of the communities. With doing all the research and looking deeper into my topic, I want to make this known to everyone in Philadelphia that there needs to be a change. I want everyone to get the word out about it and maybe it will go viral so that Philadelphia will have their voice heard. I look forward on continuing my project and in making Philadelphia a place you want to be, and where you can be safe.

Killadelphia- The City of Brutally Love?

Posted by Madison Harris in English 1 - Giknis - A on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11:07 pm

Gun Violence. Something that could affect you, your family, and community. I hear a lot about fatal shootings on the news, from people, and social media. I could have lost my cousin because he was a victim of gun violence. He was shot four times, and I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to see him again. This is something that goes through the minds of millions of people throughout the world each day when they learn that a loved one is a victim of gun violence. But what are we going to do about it? Are we going to just sit around and let this happen to young men and women? There are so many reasons why this is happening. You can find these reasons in your own backyard. We may think if this does not happen to us or are family we are fine. But maybe the neighborhood you live in isn’t.  How do you know if you are safe or not? Is Philly a safe place to be? Is your neighborhood a safe place ? Or even better, are you mindful of your surroundings and what’s going on in the environment you live in? Are there ways of preventing this from happening in the city of Philadelphia? Come along with me on my journey to learn more about this topic on my “You and The World’ project to make Philadelphia and your neighborhood a safer and happier place to be.

At the close of 2014, Philadelphia was ranked #4 overall in number of gun murders with 729 people being killed throughout the United States. This is out of more than 35,000 cities and towns in the US that Philadelphia was listed fourth.  Above please see the statistics as it relates to gun shooting victims in the months of January through September in 2014.  The graph below shows the number of shooting victims by for each day in the month of August of 2014.

http://guncrisis.org/category/statistics/

The statistics help to paint the picture of how severe this problem in our city. There was some hope for Philadelphians in January of 2015 when Tom Wolf was installed as the Governor of Pennsylvania.  Prior to being elected, Governor Wolf was endorsed by CeasefirePA, the leading gun control group in Pennsylvania.  Governor Wolf has taken a strong stance on gun issues in the state of Pennsylvania which will have a direct impact on Philadelphia.  Here are some of the changes that would possibly take place based on Governor Wolf’s stance:

  • Governor Wolf supports expanding gun background checks to include the private sale of both rifles and shotguns.

  • Governor Wolf supports background checks for the purchase of ammunition. This would mean that anytime you needed ammunition, you’d have to have a background check.

  • Governor Wolf is also open to providing support for bills requiring businesses to have a license to sell or transfer ammunition.

  • Governor Wolf is considered requiring all firearms, not just handguns and pistols, to have locking devices on them.

  • Governor Wolf opposes national reciprocity, which means those people who are hoping to be able to cross state lines and still have their permit to carry concealed valid, are probably not going to see it during his term.

These are just a few of the stances that Governor Wolf has proposed to take as it relates to gun issues in Pennsylvania.  These stances would not only affect those that legally carry firearms but also the suppliers.  This brings hope for our city and our communities.  I am hopeful that better control through regulations and stricter background checks, we can begin to seek to remedy this problem in our city, hopefully save some lives, and be known as we should be “Philadelphia- The City of Brotherly Love.

Throughout learning and gathering further information on my topic, I hope to educate you on gun issues in Philadelphia, and what to be aware of in your neighborhood. I am ready and looking forward to helping to make a difference in Philadelphia for you and to be in a healthier and safer place as we should be.

I feel like I have accomplished the ceiling tiles. I was pretty challenging at first, but I tried to make it work. I would probably have took my time instead of rushing to finish it. One drawling that I seen that was successful was Java's drawling. She made it look realistic and it looks like she put her hard time and effort into it. I learned with doing this that it takes time and it's skill that you learn over time to be successful at.

Net Neutrality

Net-Neutrality_SS_011414-617x416
Net-Neutrality_SS_011414-617x416

Why is Net Neutrality important for teens to know about? Net Neutrality is important for teens to know about because it shows teens the basics of the internet. It teaches teens to know more than what they think about the internet. Without net neutrality the internet would be a mess and unorganized. Net neutrality is our internet’s “savior”.

Net neutrality controls ISPs. ISPs are middle mans. Without net neutrality they wouldn't be fair and equitable. An ISP is a middle man because it receives the interweb, and then sells it at high prices to the consumers. It also shortens the speed and access. You have to pay more money to get faster speeds on the internet, and access to more websites.

Also, without net neutrality, ISPs would be able to create new plans to charge customers more for access and services. This affects us because it would be difficult for us to interact online with what we want to do on the internet. The internet can become similar to  cable television. Gatekeepers control what we can and get to watch. This unproductive use of the internet may destroy its access.

My slide includes pictures that describe me, my personality, and what I like to do. The "#Maddie" matches the "love" on my shirt so it will be eye-catching and it will grasp your attention. I figured adding other things that I like that it will just make my slide pop and add more personality to it. My slide shows everything about me and how I see things.. Enjoy!

Hey y’all! I decided to make my slide look like this because it’s just how I am. I tried to make my audience grasp my slide by having my “# Maddie” the same color I am wearing in the picture. I thought a bright pink would be a great choice for my slide because it’s not so much an unusual color, but it’ll grasp the eye. This slide is just describing me in four pictures and how I am. I am a fashionable person and I love style/fashion, but when it is time, I’ll throw on a pair of ball shorts and my sneakers and be a bummy/laid-back girl and chill out and ball. Enjoy : ) !

In my home network I have 10 devices hooked up to my wifi but they can work without wifi also. My cable is a Verizon Fios Cable that comes through my mom and dad's room. My ISP cord is a Fiber Optic Cable cord. And with that all my devices are connected to my wifi. I've learned so much on how these things work and I enjoyed it.
