How the environment effects criminal activity

Posted by Micah Henry in Science And Society - Best - E on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 2:49 am

Usually in neighborhoods where there is more green, meaning trees, grassy fields, lawns, flowers, and plants, people feel safer. For example, in a  2008 study of the 100 largest metropolitan areas, meaning urban and suburban areas, violent crimes in the city was at about 2,100, in comparison to in suburban areas at about 1,000. This shows that crime in urban areas is more prevalent than that of suburban areas. But why? It could simply be the reaction to seeing nature and serenity, and the pleasant smells and atmosphere that promotes a safer lifestyle and environment. This being in comparison to say an urban area, where there are factories, busy streets, odd smells, limited greenery, and noise. Also, the closeness of everyone and everything contributes sometimes to feelings of being trapped, especially in living communities, in comparison to how each suburban house is separate. In all, its is a common consensus that suburban areas lead to lower crime rates, however, what more is there to this?

Research studies over the years has questioned whether it’s due to one's genetic makeup of someone that causes them to be involved in criminal activity or if it is due to the environment in which an individual was raised in. It has been concluded that genes and one’s environment both play a significant role in one’s desire to participate in criminal activities. Various studies and lab experiments have led to this conclusion. In all, criminal behavior is defined by social and legal institutions, meaning science and biology do not play a role in defining what criminal activity is.

Regarding environment, however, this is not simply limited to the type of actually environment one is living in, meaning what the outside looks like, the more in depth environment, meaning the household and family environment can factor even more into how a child is influenced. Research has concluded it is the family environment that essentially factors in a child’s superactivity. With family risks or triggers for a bad environment being poverty, a child’s education, how the parent’s choose to raise their child, and how the family functions as a whole. Unsurprisingly, researchers discovered families who lack solid communication skills with one another and have weak bonds and connections throughout the family have been linked with children’s development of aggressive behavior, eventually leading to criminal behavior. A solid conclusion for a families turn out is with a family that lacks financially or mentally to properly raise their children and punish them for doing room are more likely to have an environment that influences the behavior and mindset of those who participate in criminal activity and delinquent behavior. In conclusion, one can understand that not just the overall environment, meaning the city, or suburban, or rural areas has an influence on how criminal activity is promoted, but the actual environment of how a child is raised is the larger factor in determining an individual's criminal mindset and behavior.

Micah's 5 Minutes of Science

Posted by Micah Henry in Science And Society - Best - E on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 9:26 pm

Science:

The science can be explained to the general public through simply touching on how playing video games can, as a whole, be more harmful than helpful. For video games are already a distraction from exercising and now the fact that using obese avatars can cause people to not want to exercise even more is no good. Males and females were used in this study in which they were given fat/skinny avatar and a fat/skinny opponent and one’s with thinner avatars increased physical activity vs an obese opponent while those with obese avatars were discouraged from participating in real life physical activity. My sources are very reliable and have proven facts and statements in them. There are multiple sources touching on this topic which is how I know my main source is reliable.

Society:

This impacts society through giving everyone and video game users new life and possibly a new perspective on how video games affect the real world. Mainly, video games users will only find this interesting because it obviously applies to them. Doing so in a manner that is both positive, due to it being informing and raising awareness, and also negative because physical exercise is very important for everyone. Furthermore, different people might think this to be untrue or just disregard it because it seems uninteresting or doesn’t apply to them. In the future, this might lead to obese avatars being taken out of video games completely, helping promote exercise.

Self:

I find this issue very intriguing because I would never guess that just using obese avatars would have such a significant effect on someone’s real life. This issue does not necessarily apply to me directly, because I love to exercise and workout out anyway. My overall thought process of having to live a healthy lifestyle, which means eating right and exercising everyday is engraved into my mind. Therefore, this finding does not have much of an effect on me. I believe obese avatars should be taken completely out of video games to help

Q3 Art Work

Posted by Micah Henry in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11:57 pm
This quarter was one of the tougher quarters for art this year. In it were about nine different assignments. Many required close attention and others research, and a few both. This quarter I believed I completed decent artwork, however I was not very sharp on getting everything in on time.

I completed a self portrait of myself which was one of the hard drawings to complete because it took more time. however it was easy to understand because I was just drawing myself. I have done self portraits in the past so it wasn't too hard.

Next, I completed a drawing of a bunny. I felt like, since my art skills are not very high, a bunny would be ideal for my skill set. I admit, I needed some online help to draw it, but it is original and I am proud of the overall outlook of this drawing.

Then, I completed a shading exercise in which I had to draw different shades, from lightest to darkest, in a row to show the different values of shading. This helps artists understand what to shade and what to not shade as well as what values to use. Then I used this knowledge to draw a drawing of a tea cup using the shading values, which I believe turned out fairly well.

Lastly, I finished a drawing of basic shapes in which I used shapes like circles, triangles, and squares to draw a robot. Robots are supposed to be basic shapes anyway, but in my second drawing I added a little flare. I drew some curves were edges were in the original picture and just made the robot look more real, and the shape drawing exercise helped.

In conclusion, this was a successful quarter for art for me and I hope to finish strong in the fourth quarter!

McCarthy Unabrigded: The Road Pages 55-58

Posted by Micah Henry in Being Human - Giknis - C on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 10:25 pm

This section of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is what I envisioned was not included in the final version of the novel:

Why has mom been acting strangely lately?

I dont know.

Is she okay?

Yes.

Are you sure?

Go talk to her yourself and find out. Ive tried talking to her too much already.

Okay.

The boy descended down the creaking steps, using the candle from upstairs to navigate through the ominous darkness of the world they live in, which night after night, engulfed their residence. The boy always made sure to treat the candle with care. Dropping it would mean that the house would become completely dark, or destroyed by flames. Either situation was inevitably disastrous. Carrying the fire wasnt a choice to the boy, it was an obligation, one he took to heart. Downstairs, at the table, across from the blazing lamp, sat his mother. Sitting calmly. Seemingly thinking, possibly reminiscing, The boy approached her quietly. The woman continued to look outside at the snow.

Mom?

Yes?

Are you okay?

No.

What’s wrong?

Everything.

Why does dad seem upset?

We dont want the same things.

What do you want?

The woman continued looking outside, not once looking at the boy, playing with her fingers, tapping her toes, her eyes filling with the slyest tears, completely blind to her son.

I want you to come with me, I dont want you to be killed.

Mom, we are survivors for a reason. We have to keep hope alive for others, and ourselves.

I cant stay here anymore. Please, leave me be son.

I love you mom, I hope you dont leave.

Here is the rationale portion of the project that will elaborate upon the choices made in the creative portion of the project:

The placement of where this scene should be could have only been before the section of pages 55-58. For there were only a couple of flashbacks regarding the boy’s mom and it would only make sense to put the additional scene before the confrontation between the mom and the dad in which led to the mom killing herself to escape someone else eventually killing her. Due to this being a flashback, it is a reflection of a significant event that occurred in the past, that has passed. To be specific, this event is so vital to the development of the boy because it shows directly how the boy is viewing the family’s current predicament. He isn’t giving into a natural reaction to hopelessness, he sees light in darkness, which is why he carries the fire, because he has the attitude and hope humanity needs to become strong again. Seeing his mother leaving only further influenced the boy to have compassion towards those suffering, intentionally or unintentionally. Carrying the fire of humanity and having the willingness to survive at such a young age, by the boy, is what this book is all about, and this additional scene provides an introduction to the boy’s willingness to do all of this throughout the novel. The term “carrying the fire” isn’t complex, it simply refers to carrying humanity, having humanity still in you despite the current circumstances, you are the light in a world of darkness, this reference being made as the boy walks down the steps with the candle to go talk to his mother.

This reference to the boy’s past and how he reacted to his mother leaving is significant. For in the novel, it is shown that the boy evidently cares greatly for his mom, wishing to be dead with her and not living at one point. This fact however shows even more how much more human this boy is. Being human does not mean simply being positive all the time, it means acting accordingly to a situation, sometimes. He is a seven or eight year old boy, of course he is going to want to be with his mother after knowing she wanted to die, it shows the boy has emotion and cares for others, at such a young age, this boy is specially gifted. The world is devastated, the current situation of the boy and father isn’t bright, but it is the fact that they continue to survive, and do whatever they can to survive, within the borderlines of humane acts, that makes them special. What would you do if the world was ending? The boy has made it clear, carry the fire, and have hope, plentiful hope.

Q2 Artwork 2016

Posted by Micah Henry in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 12:03 am
This quarter my artwork was focused on me and things I like and enjoy. Starting off with creating a collage that is all about me. For this college, I put everything from soccer, to food, to family, to my religious beliefs on it, everything that makes me, me, with theme of this quarter's artwork, in my opinion, being what makes you, you. For the next few assignments, we had to edit a photo, which many teens are good at nowadays with all the social media out, and that was rather enjoyable. Then there was project not really about yourself, but it helped show your drawing abilties, that being drawing a fabric. Then the last project included drawing an illustration of some type of writing. This shows the viewer what you are interested in, for this project you could honestly draw anything and relate it to something already written, the choice is yours, so this really shows what you enjoy reading or just drawing.
This quarter we were given plenty of time to complete our artwork and this quarter has been one of the more enjoyable quarters for work. As a student, I believe I finished most of my art work diligently and completed my blog post and slideshow efficiently, as I completed it early. Of course, there is only room for improvement. For I hope to improve upon what I have done this quarter and make it even better next quarter.

Quarter One Advanced Art Artwork

Posted by Micah Henry in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:53 pm
This is my quarter one artwork portfolio. This portfolio is of all my work from the first quarter including halloween bats, a self-portrait, a picture of the eagles logo and a ceiling tile drawing of a tree representing the environment. These projects took a good amount of time to do, especially the eagles logo and self portrait, the other things were fairly easy. Overall, this quarters work was relatively easy and I had fun doing it.

Art this year has been both up and down. At the beginning of the year I did not care for it much at all and my work showed that. However as the year went on, I realized drawing is actually very fun if you put some effort into it. I believe anyone can draw well and make someone's day with a beautiful piece of artwork. It just takes the right amount of effort and heart to make it happen. It is sad to know that I won't be drawing for a grade anymore, yet I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed drawing in Art class this year, it has been fun.

Amercia's Involvement in World War Two

Posted by Micah Henry in American History - Jonas - C on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 8:04 pm
In this inforgraphic, I focused primarily on the impacts and effects on America as a result of their involvment. Some of the impacts were temporary yet many are still seen and practiced today. Many new inventions and discoveries were made during that era (1939-1945) and continue to be advanced upon today. Overall, World War Two left many unwanted scars, yet at the same time, many desired marks on America and the type of country it is.

The Hunger Games Book Review

Posted by Micah Henry in English 3 - Rami - D on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 7:57 am

Suzanne Collins produced a piece of pure fictional majesty in the thriller known as the Hunger Games. Also known for her two other books in the series, Catching Fire and The Mockingjay, Suzanne Collins created one of the most famous trilogies of our generation. She was born August 10th, 1962 and spent the majority of her childhood moving from city to city due to her father’s participation in the Vietnam War. She graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1980 as a Theatre Arts major and got her Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in 1985, thus kicking off her career. She helped produce several children’s shows such as Oswald and Little Bear, then she wrote her acclaimed trilogy known as the Hunger Games which really put an exclamation point on her career. Already with the Underland Chronicles under her belt, this trilogy only helped her fame increase in the most positive way. For not only is this trilogy a work of art, but a stern example of how freedom can be reached through constant perseverance. Along with the willingness of the heart to never quit, even during times of undoubtable trial and tribulation; Katniss Everdeen being the woman of example in this obsessive trilogy.

The once great region of North America, which is now known as Panem, has been separated into twelve districts. This districts rely on each other for whatever resources they need to survive. Then of course, there are the richer districts as the lower number ones, and the higher one goes in numbers, the poorer the district. Thus the 12th district, the home of the brave Katniss Everdeen and her family, along with best friend Gale, and her soon to be partner Peeta, is the poorest and least regarded district in the nation. These lower districts being tormented by the Capitol, a tyrannical presence in district 1 of the nation that controls all the districts along with what happens in them. Years ago, this authority was threatened by a revolution by the then 13 districts. However, the Capitol prevailed, and as a result the 13th district was said to be destroyed and the Capitol decided to make a cruel, and unusual punishment as a result to this revolution. The Hunger Games.

Games are played but people of all ages, and are usually enjoyed. Enjoyment by participants of the Hunger Games is not only a showing of one’s attitude, but a showing of one’s loyalty to the Capitol and their regulations regarding the 12 districts. For this games are made to kill, murders of all participants, except one, who then becomes a name written in stone, as a survivor and champion of the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen and the volunteering Peeta Mellark are chosen from district 12 to participate, along with two other boys and girls from the rest of the districts to fight to the death. Only one will survive this heated, bloody battle. Everybody for themselves. Who will survive? Who will become the champion?

The Hunger Games book one is an adventure waiting to be adored and praised for its suspense along with the fighting spirit of those in the districts to overthrow the Capitol; a thrilling beginning to an unforgettable tale. Beyond that, the overall theme of never letting freedom flee one’s grasp is an imminent, throbbing reality as Katniss Everdeen refuses to let the Capitol control the games they created, through thoughtful revolution and rebellion. With the book starting out with the already seemingly rebellious Katniss Everdeen hunting outside the walls of district 12 regularly to find food for her family and the Black Market, a theme is already hinted at. Thus the appearance of Gale Hawthorne adds a romantic, caring side to this story, hooking the readers, making them ponder about what is to come next. As the book carries on, its gradual build up to these thrilling games is what the reader is yearning to analyze and devour. Even though in several parts this book fails to meet expectations, overlooking these minor distractions will make one love this book even more. Fortunately, if one is a lover of books regarding rebellion, action, and a fight for freedom, this book should hit the spot.

The overwhelming feeling of the need to rebel and start another, successful revolution pounds at Katniss’ heart throughout this thriller. Her desire to see her family again, to see her best friend Gale again, and her newly found desire to protect Peeta all play a role in her willingness to survive and participate in the Hunger Games. Throughout the entire book however, the hanging questions remains in one’s face like a group of flying gnats, will Katniss survive? Will all her efforts to rebel and free the districts from the Capitol’s strong grip come to no avail? Excitingly, the answer dwell in this exhilarating, compulsive book which is a must read, for Katniss Everdeen is a fighter.

Non-Violent or Violent Revolutions?

Posted by Micah Henry in World History - Block - B on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 11:45 pm

In this unit, the focus of study was human rights around the world. Every human is entitled to the same rights at birth. Whether one is white or black, Christian or Muslim, homosexual, or heterosexual it does not matter for we are all made in the image of God and are all human, there are no exceptions. Revolutions play the most significant role in defining ones rights and in specific, their rights to freedom. Furthermore, whether revolutions can be successful or whether a revolution is necessary are all questions to ponder about. Simply one can think about how a revolution begins or how it is inspired to better understand their purpose and how they work.

Through my own research and studies, I have come to the conclusion that revolutions are pointless. Yes, at the moment of action they seem to make a difference and make a change, yet how many revolutions have occurred in the past and seemingly still occur today? Revolutions are caused due to disagreement, and we are all human. People should have the right to express their opinions and feelings and they should, but in my opinion, they come to no avail. In my digital play below, I concluded that neither non violent nor violent revolutions are successful, for as I have previously stated, they have no solution and often lead to worse events.

Negative Space Three Sketches

Posted by Micah Henry in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:47 pm

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) Negative space is the space of a drawing where other things are not there. In other words, it is the space around and in between an object.

 B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing? I found negative space by drawing the space that is not the object but the space that is around or intertwined with the object.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It helps an artist to see in negative space because it gives artists different perspectives on art and their drawings, therefore they can expand upon the depth of their drawings.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not? Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it helps artists see the difference of positive and negative space, as a result the artist can use both at will, enhancing their masterpieces.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Micah Henry in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 11:55 pm

What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before.

One thing I learned specifically that I did not know before was in general terms, how to draw things in one point perspective.

How did leaning this thing make your drawings better.

Learning this thing made my drawing better because it added depth and detail to a drawing that would usually be boring to look at.

If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

If I did this assignment again, I would definitely add more detail such as the board or more tables and stools, and possibly even more details to the ceiling or floor.

What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

My advice to someone trying one point perspective drawing for the first time is to get help if your stuck! Do not expect help to come by itself if your are lost, you have to ask for help.

What resource helped you the most and why?

Your example on moodle of your drawing helped me understand the basics of a one point perspective drawing and therefore I could create the drawing once I understand the background information of how to do so.

Technology Slide Project: Micah Henry

Introduction: In technology class, we are creating a slide that describes ourselves, with very few words. Visuals or a visual is being used to show our hobbies, our life, or possibly just are passions and dreams. The purpose of this slide is to show who we are and what we enjoy to do in life. Lastly, the slide should be very short with words to describe yourself, with a picture to emphasize your lightly worded description.

This slide looks the way it does because my favorite, most inspirational quote is hard work & dedication. I admire this saying because it basically sums up everything you need to succeed in life with three words. These three words being very powerful , for they explain how working hard towards your dream an having a motivation to do so, you will be successful. In addition, my slide has a picture of soccer, and on the top, hard work & dedication because the words summarize the picture. For the picture is of a soccer player leaping to his full extent to win the ball and gain possession, this all being to get a goal; this goal is to succeed, to win. My love for the game of soccer, and my thought patterns of how if you work hard at something, you can never lose has helped me to make the decisions on this slide. The message, in text, is short, but could tell a story, with this great picture of hard work & dedication to back up this message of succeeding.

Micah:

Querid@... ,
¡Hola! ¿Cómo te llamas? Cómo estas? Me llamo Micah Henry. ¡Estoy muy bien! Tengo catorce años. Soy de Filadelfia, pero vivo en Filadelfia. Hace mucho frío en Filadelfia. ¿Cuantos años tienes? ¿De dónde eres tú? ¿Qué tiempo hace hoy?
Soy talentoso, a veces serio, igualmente cómico. Soy muy deportisto, divertido, a veces perezoso, y muy inteligente. Soy más o menos alto, por lo general sociable, y más o menos delgado. Me gusta practicar deportes, me encanta futbol! Me encanta beisbol, y jugar videojuegos. No me gusta trabajar, estudiar, y dibujar. ¡Mi favoritos dormir y comer! ¡Adios amigo!

Con cariño,
Micah Henry
