Nhu Lai Capstone

Posted by Nhu Lai in CTE Senior Capstone · Ugworji/Walker-Roberts · Wed on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 7:13 pm

My capstone goals are spreading cultural differences so that people could feel less intimidated about Asian Culture. Before the pandemic happens, Valerie and I created an Asian Alliance Club in school, our goal is to let people know about the Asian representation in the SLA community.

The second part of our capstone is to create a gallery of the Asian culture but we could not do it. So instead of a gallery, I created a website that is specifically focusing on Vietnamese Culture. And for Valerie part, she will be creating some infographics as well as a poster!

Advanced Essay #3: Violence in Life

Posted by Nhu Lai in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 11:15 am
Introduction:

My goals for this paper is for people to realize that we need to reduce childhood exposure to violence. I'm proud of myself for getting really good sources to support my evidence, that children do get affected for the violence contents around them, and as adults, people should understand and find a way to prevent it from happening.

Essay:

Our propensity for violence is based on how much brutality we are exposed to when we were young. Whether we experienced or witnessed violence as children, it affects us for the rest of our lives physically and emotionally. When adults see violence in today’s society, they tend to blame the society that they live in, instead of understanding the fact that in order to reduce these violent tendencies, we must first reduce childhood exposure to violence.

History classes across America focus on one thing for the majority; war, an extremely violent battle between multiple groups around the world. Introduced to kids through different structures for entertainment and education every day knowing that it could be unhealthy for kids to take in the information. According to the InfoRefuge, “While the obvious reason for this is to maintain public morale and support for the life-threatening conflict, American military intervention since that civil war has been projected internationally” (2018). War casualty is there for public morale and support, showing the violence they have experienced in battle. Publishing it so people memorize and understand what those who suffered have been through. Not understanding that these stories would affect someone physically and emotionally, especially younger children because they have not learned nor determined the unnecessary part of the war or how dangerous it could be toward the people and nature itself. Children have been taught that war is a place where people fight against each other for their desires and beliefs. It affects them physically and emotionally, driving them to violence, and, they begin to think that violence is the path for good things to happen.

Furthermore, entertainment has become one of the biggest factors in kids daily life. According to the CNN reports, children under 9 spend at least two hours each day watching screens for entertainment. Network-wide web is a place that nobody has the right to control, and the media's mention of violence can go viral overnight without delay. CiPHR stated, “Past research has shown that technology-based exposures to and experiences of violence, which includes harassment, bullying, or unwanted sexual exposure, can sometimes be associated with psychosocial challenges”(2017). These reports and news on violent acts will affect the young people who obtain the information and burden the family of the kid. Adults criticize the public for ruining their kid's life; indeed the parent of the children could help solve this problem by helping educate younger folks about these problems in a mature way. Adults can also argue that they have no ability to control the world-wide network, but they do have the ability to lead kids through a better path compared to the research and information kids have found on their own about the problem.

Most importantly, violence cannot be deleted from the mindset nor the things that we have learned. Therefore, people will have to create a better path to help kids learn through when in a situation where violence could occur. In agreement with Jocelyn Kelly, “Even more tragically, these same young men would often struggle to reintegrate peacefully into their communities when hostilities ended” (2018). If someone witnesses a violent action themselves then they will have an underlying recollection of that time and it may be more feasible for them to react with the violence of their own. Adults who have experienced a violent event can become diagnosed with Post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If adults cannot even handle this, how could a child be expected to deal with it by themselves? Nobody can stop PTSD from happening, but we can take steps towards stopping the cause of PTSD.

People who have experienced a violent event can sometimes be stuck in a place where things are not the same for them afterward. Depending on the situation, but most likely the images related to the event will be embedded forever. The U.S government encourages those who are in trouble to get therapy but does not want to take the blame for the events that happened. They tend to blame the situation itself by saying that was something out of their control. An example being the Vietnam war, the U.S military blamed the company who created Agent Orange (A herbicide and defoliant chemical) and said that it was their fault by putting in the chemical that affected humans. The truth is the U.S military is the one who pulls the trigger, and they understand that the chemical could kill innocent people, but they keep going and acting like a victim.

We cannot control publicity, but we can control what is under our rights. Controlling the world-wide-web is impossible, but helping our kids understand the real dangers is possible. Every problem can have a solution, we just have to find the best one to solve the issue. Violence is something that we cannot stop, but we can learn how to deal with it in a better way that prevents it from becoming an everyday thing for a child's life.

Advanced Essay #2: Improvement of Society

Posted by Nhu Lai in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 2:44 pm

Introduction:

The purpose of my essay is to show how unique identities could create progress of improvement in society. I was really proud of myself that I could put my ideas into this piece and connected with my experience in SLA. I really want to improve how I form the sentences so it could be more clear.

Advanced Essay #2: Improvement of Society

Progress is dependent on people having different ideas; if we were all the same, then is going to be impossible for the developments. However, most people are born with the mindset that they belong where people have similar identities to their own. People tend to assume your identity based on their standards, but the improvement of society requires a diversity of identities and a sense of belonging.

When I was a little if someone asked me, “Hey, what’s your name?” I used to get embarrassed. My face would turn red and I would freeze. I did not like the feeling of listening to people when they talked about my name, a feeling most immigrants hate. I used to have a mindset that if you are living in America you should not present yourself as too “Asian.” I believed people would either think that you didn’t know English or you didn’t belong in their society. I was young when I moved to America and I didn't want to become an alienated kid just because of my name being different.

It started in middle school, and yet I remember it as if it was yesterday. We had a new science teacher and he was my new advisor. Everyone was so happy to introduce themselves to him, and there I was, sitting in a corner and couldn't think at all. “Hey! Hey, the girl over there.” He shouted.

It took me a while to realize that he was calling me. I stood up slowly, saying in a shaky voice, “ Yes sir?”

“What is your name?” He asked.

“Nhu.” I said quietly.

“What?” He said, “Can you speak up a little bit?”

“Nhu.” I said with a louder voice.

“Why are you so shy about it?” He asked, “Your name definitely has a beautiful meaning behind it, what’s wrong with telling people about your name?”

“I didn’t want to be so different from the rest, my name makes me different so I don’t like it,” I replied.

He laughed, “Name is something that makes me stand out from others. Something that tells people who I am. Something that helps me remember where I belong. Something that tells me my culture and identity.” He said, “Don’t be shy about it. One day when you grow up, you will see how special your name is to others.”

SLA has been proven that he was right. My name has a unique meaning and I should be proud of it. My name makes people remember my unique identity, but that factor never affects my belonging in this community.

SLA family is diverse. Each of us contributes unique parts of ourselves to help the community grow over time to make it even better than before. We respect each other because we understand that we are different. According to Julian Baggini, a British philosopher, “[W]e have different conceptions of the self the world over not because selves differ, but because at different times and places people have more or less concern with different aspects of selfhood.” This is significant because everybody has their own thought about how to view the world which could either be influenced by their identity, background, environment, or other life experiences unique to them. Without these factors, everyone would have the same mindset, which would make a community stuck in the same place forever. To be able to grow something as a whole, you have to listen, understand, and accept that others have distinctive personalities. Most importantly, look at multiple perspectives because nobody is going to be correct all of the time. At SLA, our ideas are different, but we all have the same goal, to reach success. We are all working hard towards it, and that is how we build up our community over time.

SLA is a puzzle that contains multiple pieces that fit together. We are unique, but we always find a way to help each other feel as we belong together. In the movie, Beasts of the Southern Wild, it shows that “[T]he whole universe depends on everything fitting together just right. If one piece busts, even the smallest piece, the whole universe will get busted.” The idea that everything is connected together in some way, a tiny thing could ruin everything demonstrated that everyone should help each other out and build on top of each other's ideas. Doing things on your own will not help things improve or grow, but given your own ideas to a community will help it build up over time. Giving your best effort could not only it affect you, but others, and help to contribute to other sense of belonging.

Most people would think about this differently. They would prefer people who they are most feel comfortable with, which are the people who fit perfectly with the standard that they set up. Knowing someone who is similarly related to them are more suitable because they could easy to share their feeling among others. They would believe that others will understand and help them move forward with their goals.

People in society are different in their own way. Your name is one of the factors that is unique and defines who you are as a person. Others should not assume things based on society’s standard because everyone is different. This difference is a way for this society to improve. We needed multiple ideas to build up a larger idea, just like society needed diversity to grow over time.

Advanced Essay #1: The Roller Coaster Ride

Posted by Nhu Lai in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 1:20 pm
Introduction:
My goal for this essay is to let people realize that if you try out the new experience and help you overcome your fears. I'm really proud of myself because I actually get out of my barrier and experience new things. Finally, I really want to improve on my flowing skills, like how to make my essay sound better.

The Roller Coaster Ride:
There are multiple types of fears, and the unknown fears are the worst compared to others. Each of us had been trying to overcome our fears, we all process things differently to overcome it. So everything begins with my trip to an amusement park with my friend. It was a special Sunday that I would never forget, and I was very excited the night before to the point where I could not sleep.

At 7 o’clock, the alarm on my phone woke me up, I felt nervous and ecstatic. I wore a pink hoodie, black shorts, and brand new slip-on platform Vans. It was humid outside; I could feel the foggy breeze brush through my skin along with my hair until my hair was tangled into a mess. It reminded me that summer was ending, and it was already transitioning to autumn.

Our squad was four strong girls who I considered my best friends, Christine, Meng, Rena, and me. We had all been thinking about this trip so much that we began to feel so enthusiastic. I turned on the radio, and the first song that popped up was “That’s what I like,” by Bruno Mars. Suddenly, everybody began to sing in unison. As that happened the wheels of the car began to roll, our journey had begun. It was a two-hour ride, so we decided to pick out our favorite music and rotate the list around as it goes.

From afar, Six Flags emitted an aura of total tranquility. The noise of screams and laughter could be heard as I got closer to the entrance. I was looking around while we were going through the ticket checking gates. I said, "Lucky for us that the park wasn't crowded so we don't have to wait for the line.”

“I know right! Usually, the park gets crowded in the summer, especially on the weekend,” Christine replied.

In my mind, I was so frustrated about everything in the park. My friends pushed me to get on the top #1 scariest thrill ride in Six Flags called “Kingda Ka”, it only has one drop, but that drop height is 456 feet in 3.6 seconds, going up to 128 miles per hour, not only was it the tallest roller coaster but it was also the fastest.

I felt butterflies in my stomach when we were waiting for our turn. As the time went on I felt like my blood stopped pumping around my body, my hands were cold, my body was shaking. I was scared, but I did not want to be the girl that would refuse to try out any new experiences just because of her fears. That unknown fear that would limit her to try.

“Hey, have you ever tried this before?” I asked with my rambling voice.

“Yes and the best part about it is the drop,” Rena added in.

“You will be fine, the drop will only take up a few seconds,” Meng replied.

I tried to ask questions so I could let my fears disappear, but they’ve made me even more worried about the ride. Then it’s our turn, I was on the verge of tears when the ride started. I closed my eyes and whispered to myself, “Just get it over with, you will be fine.” The roller coaster slowly marched toward the top of the slope and I was watching myself going higher and higher. Everything was small and insignificant compared to what I was about to experience. I suddenly hated myself for agreeing to participate in this madness. Though it was already too late to regret anything. The ride stopped for a second when it hit the peak of the structure, and true terror flowed in. The roller coaster violently tore its way down the track. The wind was pushing against my body and it made me feel as if my seatbelts were loosening up. I felt at any moment I could have been yanked out of my seat due to the massive speed and pressure of the ride. People around me were screaming. I could clearly distinguish how the screams vary. Some were filled with happiness and excitement. Some exactly depicted my internal cry.

The ride only took up a few minutes, but I was so proud of myself for overcoming my fear which is not easy to accomplish. Each of us has a limitation for ourselves, and we all have at least some sort of fear, for me, it was the unknowns. But at least I gave it a try. I stepped down from the staircase with a smile on my face, I looked at Christine, “It was not that bad! We should try out a different ride.” From that point on, I just fell in love with roller coasters. Every piece of art that is from the roller coasters combine will create a beautiful picture, and it will help me de-stress all of the problems that I have in my life.

The Desire For Power

Posted by Nhu Lai in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 2:07 pm

Society is a place for competition. Human beings leverage their power in different contexts and through a diverse set of modes. The choice is either to fight for power, to serve as a leader of a community, or to accept power from another source. Most of the time, people will fight for power because they do not want to serve under the dictatorship of another human being. As the desire for power grows, human beings strive to gain as much as they can to be at the top. This need for dominant influence is a recurring theme in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The plot centers around a group of abandoned British children stranded on an island and fighting to establish order to get off the uninhabited island. Despite the continuous efforts, no one truly ever gains the power they desire because humans are never satisfied in this regard.

The group decides to create a civilization of only themselves because there were no adults on the island. They started to vote for a leader between a boy named Ralph and a boy named Jack. Jack was so confident that he can become the best leader because he was chapter chorister, head boy, and he can sing C sharp. Instead, Ralph was deemed the chief, leaving Jack was upset as a result. In chapter 1, “Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification. He started up, then changed his mind and sat down again while the air rang.”(23) Despite losing, Jack changes his mind thinking that if he tries to act like he is helpful, and remain calm around Ralph, Ralph will give him a higher position in the civilization. People would do anything to get the power that they want. Even changing their personalities, acting differently, and serving under the one who has higher power for a while to get what they want.

As the novel goes on, Jack’s desire for power grows because no one listens to him. Jack starts trying to make Ralph look like a bad chief in front of everyone else in his attempt to turn the group against him. In chapter 8, Jack says “He’s not a hunter. He’d never have got us meat. He isn’t a perfect and we don’t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk.”(126) Jack did not want to serve under Ralph’s orders any longer, so he tried to do everything in his power to ruin in Ralph’s position by saying how bad and imperfect he is to the civilization. He wants power so everyone can listen to him and serve him like they did to Ralph. The desire for power gains over time by the way that society governs itself. People are always trying to be on top of each other, so they can have the power to control others.

An example of this behavior also takes place in the real-world experience. Donald Trump, the president of the United States, is similar to Jack in regards to his immense and seemingly endless desire for power. Donald Trump used to live out a fairly standard  ‘rich-guy’ life. However, he didn’t accept his normal life and decided to join politics, fight for his presidency, and sit in the government of the United States. He wanted a higher position, and now that he has it he is abusing his power. According to the newspaper CNN, “For nearly two years now, citizen, candidate, and President Donald Trump have agitated for the means to build a wall on the southern border. Better yet, he told supporters during his campaign, it would be American-made and Mexican-paid ‘believe me’.” When he was a businessman he couldn’t do anything of that. But after he achieved his power in the government, he started to plan it out, and process it. If he wasn’t running for his presidency, he would not be able to plan out these things, and public his speech about it. This also proves that power is never achieved as much as humans want. Donald Trump was a rich guy, he could just stay in his normal life and enjoying all of his money. But instead, he decided to join the government to try and get even more powers.

Jack and Donald Trump are alike because they both desire power. They needed it for their goals. They also wanted it because they did not want to serve others, instead, they want to use the power to rule others. Jack and Donald Trump are different because Jack only wants the power to rule others, while Donald Trump wants the power to find money for him along with ruling people. Power makes people feel happy because it provides them with their wants and needs. It lets them make others listen to the things that they want, and force others to help them out with whatever they want to achieve. Donald Trump wanted to build the wall, and he’s using his new power of the president to try and say that Mexicans have to pay for it.

Humans all desire power, and every single one desires different types of power. Power makes people feel different because it gives them what they want. Human desire never ends, so power can never achieve all of a human’s wants. This is shown in the book Lord of the Flies and in the real-life example of Donald Trump. They both desire power to do things that they want and their goals are endless. No matter how hard people fight for the power they never reach what they want, because they never stop wanting more.

Broken Promise

Posted by Nhu Lai in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 9:25 am
Oh, finally, I’m home, it’s been a long day, I’m so tired. ( Tings...) I hope that is Tris, he is going to make me feel better. ( Open the phone ) “ Hey Maitea, I think the time has come to say goodbye, I’m sorry.”

(Call) Tris? Hello? I know you are there Tris, answer me? Tris? What is going on? Please stop ignore me. (Hang up)

(Voice Mail) “Hello, this is Tris voicemail, sorry I’m currently unable to take your call. Please leave your message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Tris?  What is going on love? Why are you ignore me? I know you’re there Tris, pick up the phone.

(Thought) What is going on? Why did he break up with me? Did I do something wrong?

(Voice Mail) “Hello, this is Tris voicemail, sorry I’m currently unable to take your call. Please leave your message and I will contact you as soon as possible”
Tris? Please, I know you’re there, pick up the phone love, stop ignoring me. What’s going on? I don’t know what I did wrong, but at least give me a second chance Tris. I always gave you a chance to apologize. Why are you doing this to me, Tris?  Remember all of the promises? You said you going to be with me no matter what, you said you will love me until the day we die, you said I’m your only girl, Tris? Please, talk to me.

(Voice Mail) “Hello, this is Tris voicemail, sorry I’m currently unable to take your call. Please leave your message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.”
Tris? I know you’re there, we need to talk, this cannot be happening right now. Tris, is it because of her? Is she better than me or something? Did I not treat you the way that you wanted it to be? Tris? Please.. Pick up the phone!

(Voice Mail) “Hello, this is Tris voicemail, sorry I’m currently unable to take your call. Please leave your message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.”
Well, I guess, that’s it, you left me for someone else, I notice that since you met her, I thought you will be better than this, I guess you’re just like other guys. Hope you have a great time with her Tris…I love you.

(Thought)I’m really mad at him, but I can’t show it out because I love him so much. I just want best things to happen for us, but why it has to be so hard. You know, love never last forever, we were dating for 4 years, but because of the third person, he only knows her for a month, but he decided pushes me away because of her. It always starts with something sweet and ends with hurt. All of the promises, nothing were true, nothing… just absolutely nothing…. The more you trust them, the more pain you will get later on. Love is painful.

Assumption

Posted by Nhu Lai in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 9:20 am

Most people assume that I come from Korea by the way that I look. My hairstyle, skin color, and my makeup makes me look like I’m from Korea, but it’s doesn’t mean that I am. Sometimes people will assume that I was born in America because I can speak English. Sometimes, I don't feel like correcting the people that are making assumptions because there are so many people that just come up to me and assume they know everything about me by the way I look or the way I act.

This story all began this past summer. I was hanging out with my friends at the park near my house and a beautiful woman that was fashionably dressed who came up to me, started to talk to me and asked me questions about myself. The first question she asked me was, “Are you from Korea? OMG, I love Korean people, the music of Korea, and the language too, they are so cool!”

I never thought by looking at the way she was dressed that she would be the kind of person to make an assumption about other people until she started talking.  I said to myself  “I have no idea why she thinks that I came from Korea.” So I looked at her and responded “Nah, I’m not from Korea, but yeah, I think the music and everything in Korea is really cool too…!”

I wanna to tell her that I came from Vietnam, but she was talking so much ,she just stopped me and continued to assume and went on to say, “Wow, so you’re not Korean, should I believe that?" She laughed "So, you’re born in America right?"

I took a few seconds to think and there were tons of questions coming up in my mind: " Really? Why are you laughing, I don’t think is funny? Or do I really look like I was born in America? Is my accent proving that I was born in America? Come on people!" Then I said, " No, I was born in Vietnam." She thought that I was joking, so she starts to laugh at me. Before I knew it, she turned around, walked away, and I never saw her again.

A few days later, where I was with my friends at the same park, a guy came up to me and said the same exact things that the women did. I was so mad that I didn’t even feel like correcting him. I just don’t understand why people like to assume things that much. And it’s always happening in my life.

Assuming about others is not always a good thing to do. I mean why do people always  have to assume? In my experience, people assuming where I am from just makes me mad. People never think about how others feel in the situations if  it can hurt them or affect them in some way.

For example, if you go up to someone that doesn’t have a perfect family, and you just come up to them and start to assume that they have a perfect family. Then you start talking about how happy is your family compare to people who don’t have it. They will feel bad, and that can bring them down in everything. I mean that by the will get upset, and I think when people getting upset they don’t really can do much things, so that’s mean you just rude in their day, maybe some people will remember it for like their entire life. That’s not good, people want to get a happy life, and they want to be happy even single day.

Some people will think that this problem is not important because they never experienced it or because they don’t really care if somebody might hurt their feelings. Also, if you think that the problem is normal to you, it doesn’t mean that is normal to other people. We are different, people have a different opinions on assumption. So, I think that you shouldn’t use it to other people. If you want them to respect you and not assuming anything on you, then I think you should respect them as much as they do for you.

Final Stamp Design

Posted by Nhu Lai in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 9:14 am
This is my final stamp design. The assignment is to create a stamp that related to you and it has to show the negative space and positive space. My first step was to pick out three words that described me " Affectionate, adventurous and trustworthy". Then I start to look all the words up, I found a ton of different stamp and then I combined it together to get into my final stamp.
I created this stamp to represent that I affectionate, trustworthy and adventurous. The hands holding the heart shows trustworthy and affectionate. And the zig zag lines outside shows adventurous. I made my stamp really simple because I think if I make it too complicated then people will not understand it.
I used negative space and positive space to shows that life is short and dangerous, and you should respect what you have right now. The zig zag lines are really short, and thin so that represent the short and dangerous. The hands holding the heart represent how important things is in our life and people should respect what they have.
This assignment is really hard for me because you need to take a lot of time to combined different stamp together to create your own. And the cutting part, my zig zag lines are really hard to cut, that take me awhile to do it. But the most difficult part is to decide where is the positive space and negative space.

Negative Space

Negative space in art is the space surrounding the subject in the image. It helps people to define the boundaries between negative space and positive space, also it’s will bring balance to a composition.  Negative space use to show the successful composition in art.
I found the negative space in my cut out by cutting out the template and use it to cut the same thing but on different color paper to show negative space. It helps the artist to see in negative space because negative space makes the image more special. Mostly you only see one side, not another. Negative space helps the artist see both sides.
It depends on the color that you pick for negative space and positive space. For me, I think that negative space looks good when negative space is the dark color and positive space is the light color. That makes the image show more detail.

    Soy yo
         Tengo catorce años
Somos productos de VietNam
     VietNam nunca lo aludo
    La llevo siempre conmigo

     Vengo desde muy lejos
    Estoy buscando una vida mejor
     Cansados de estar corriendo
      En tiempos de cacería

Hablo en ingles es muy difícil
      Mi familia
              Mi amigo
                Todo es muy difícil

        No voy a rendirme
Pero estoy haciendo un gran esfuerzo
    Creo que yo tendre éxito
       Si yo hago esfuerzo

New Slide for Tech

I learned that color is the first thing that people will notice about. Last time my background color and my sample color is not matching so this time I using black and white color for my slide. Because black and white are opposite color, so when you mix it together, the value going to be intense, which mean is going to have some part are dark and some part are  bright. I also learned that if I make my text huge then people going to focus on that part the most. Like you can see, I trying to make the text apologize huge because I want people to focus on it the most. And the text  be yourself,  the word be you, I put it in different color because I think is important and want people to look at it first. I put 2 white line in opposite direction because I think it would help my slide look more creative and don’t have that much space left. And it really important to research in the beginning a project because they help you know what you should put in your slide and it help you write the intro for it more easier, are maybe in the 2nd slide you don’t need to look at it again but you still remember all the rules and know how to fix your slide and make it more perfect.

Media Fluency

I researched using Slide Design for Developers for my slide. First, I used  intense color for the gaming sample, which mean is make it stand out because I like it the most. Mostly, I’m using light  values because I like pastels. I’m using the triangle for the edge because of the contrast, and to make it look more special. If the picture is large, that  means I love it the most so that is why some of the samples are smaller than other. If I could do the slide again, then I will try to use other rules of Slide Design for Developers. And I will try to find different sample because most of my sample background is white, so it can feel boring.
