Success at SLA 101

Erin Garvey ℅ 2014

Success at SLA 101 is about my peers and I individual definition of success during our high school careers. Success is an individual feeling. Everyone has personal goals, and being successful depends on whether or not you reached those goals here at SLA. Making my opinions, and the 5 core values of SLA I will demonstrate what I’ve received during my 4 year high school experience. I will also ask, and take incite from other students in the community and determine if they too feel just as successful as defined, and if not, what advice will they have for incoming freshman and other underclassmen.

Podcast #2 for Stats
Juan and myself, came together again to discuss, Chapters 5-7. Theses few chapters confused us a bit, and we didn't really have much to speak on. We went based on what we could interpret. We found it hard understanding what semi-attached figures are specifically.

Buffalo Chicken Dip by Octavius Collins

Buffalo Chicken Dip

I’ve been eating this dish since grade school and my mother would make it for the other parents on the track team, during the track meets, so it kind of brought back a memory. Since I got the recipe from my mother, and she normally doesn’t measure when she cooks, the serving sizes aren’t accurate. So I decided to use another recipe that I found online that provided the nutritional facts needed. The dip itself is healthy before a serving or 2. Based on the way that I eat, and the amount of serving sizes I eat at a time is what isn’t healthy about the dip.

(Talk about how you had to use a slightly different recipe for the nutritional facts + CITE)

Environmental:

-The meal is mainly all processed. The main processed ingredients would be the half of a pound of Tyson chicken breast that I used. The celery wasn’t organic either, so I would imagine that it was processed as well because chemicals were most likely added to help it grow.

Political/economic:

- All together this meal is approximately $8 but can feed 8-10 people, at least. The prices can fluctuate based on the brand of product that you choose to use. This can build controversy amongst some vegan, and vegetarians dieters because of the chicken I used in the dip. Celery, I imagine, is perfect find in any family’s food group.

Social

-The chicken from the product was produced and process at Tyson Farm Food Incorporation. The chickens aren’t treated as well as they should be.

(I used my mother’s recipe that she made up herself, so know serving sizes and amounts aren’t as accurate as it could be, but I found some sources that can be of assistances, and that are similar to the dish I prepared.

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/buffalo-chicken-dip/

Ingredients: Recipe: 1 cups of chopped celery, 1/2 cup of blue cheese 1/2 cup of buffalo sauce, 1/2 lbs of chicken breast.

Heat the oven to approximately 350 degrees fahrenheit.  Cook, and chop the chicken breast, and spread the around in the baking bowl. Add/ pour the celery following, then pour in the blue cheese dressing, and buffalo sauce. Stir, and mix until chicken is an orange color then place into the oven and let the food bake for 20minutes. Monitor it may or may not take that long.

I choose to cook this dish because it’s not a big, but it’s one of my favorite appetizers to eat around family and friends. It’s not really symbolic not does it really have a history behind it besides the fact that my family has the same craving for it when the holidays come around as we impatiently wait for the food to finish being prepared.

I learned a lot this unit. I learned that most of our food problems are because of the government, and the way that they process, and domesticate their animals is a lot different onto our liking. We only knew what they decided to tell us, so after watching that movie about how some meat companies handle their food my views on meat have changed. I'm not sure what my role in the normal food system role is, but I do feel like our largest problem is that we don't sometimes know what we're eating. If I could, I'd choose to stop putting steroids in chickens in other meat. Making a change, I wouldn't stop eating meat today because it's been in my diet my whole life, and I need meat in my diet.

I write to connect with myself, and to get what I feel, or to get my opinion based statements out on paper. It actually does help me during the day. I've learned to channel my aggression, and anger into my writing, and focus on tapping in my fullest potential.

Teen Violence- Process Paper

Posted by Octavius Collins in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 1:34 pm

Coming into this project, as a group, we had a bunch of ideas. We never discussed who a leader was, so together the work was distributed and done equally. We started with disagreements, and ended with a well collaborative project that we all put effort into. Collaboration, (one of our core values) is the main reason we were successful during this project.

Our first idea for the project, since it was on Teen Violence, was to go to schools and speak about teen violence and the views, wrongs, the bad, and ways to change it. Then we thought, "who are we to preach, judge, and criticize other teens about violence. Also considering the fact that getting a chance, or opportunity to present in front of school would be complicated. So we went with the idea of making a website for our campaign, and recording and having students participate in a PSA. We made a website, and a social network (Facebook) to promote the campaign. Our catch phrase/ slogan is "HANN." Sounds like "huh?" but it's slang, and a lot of artistes use it in their lyrics. When we say "HANN" we're referring to a violent situation, and questioning the seriousness in it, for people to do the violent things that they do. For example, in our video, "you lost to him in a game of basketball, now you wanna mix? HANN?" Which is one of the common reason teen end up being violent toward each other. The social network consisted of a Facebook like page where teens, and any one else was open to write how they felt about teen violence, and any experiences they've encountered, or family/friends they've lost to teen violences. The website had our PSA, links to our Facebook, and a personal blog that our Principal, Chris Lehman shared us in.

Even though we didn't officially choose a leader for the project, it was clear that Jackie too that role in being a leader by putting together everyones ideas for the project, and distributing amongst ourselves. Responsibility and communication are both strong components that we all carried during the project. If someone was missing the day something was due, we'd contact each other, and find away to get our part of the project in class, as well as not using absences, be the reason for not having work done.

Single Life by Octavius Collins

Posted by Octavius Collins in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 8:37 am
Preview: This interview will consist of the college life of a single parent, with no job & raising to twin boys.

Stereotypically single mothers are consider women who are raising children alone. In most situations the father's a dead beat dad, incarcerated, or dead. Considering my situation, my mother was not in this alone. Describing her life in college and what it was like to raise her 2 twin boys along with the help of her mother, and grandmother, my family will speak on the single parent life of my mother. crossing boundaries genrally in my opinion is going against ones higher authority.

Do I Sound Familiar ?

Posted by Octavius Collins in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Octavius Collins

Do I sound Familiar?

“ I had a dream like Martin Luther lil bit of hope. Say if Rosa never at, and Malcolm never spoke. Prolly catch me the woods hanging from a rope.”

“ Damn Tav who said that?

“Meek Mill.”

“You listen to him?” My friend says in a cautious voice.

“Yea, that’s my boy. (Finishes lyrics)

Whenever I’m with my friends I tend to speak with a lot of slang. Half the time I don’t complete my words, substitute correct words for slang words and I do a lot of cussing. I speak in a way that defines myself, but I change up when necessary. I think of myself as a “slang slinger.” Sometimes I even talk to my teachers in slang. Trying to teach them something new. I know how to use proper English, & I’ve never been told I say certain things or that I have a problem with my pronunciation.

From my mother’s prospective I talk like “ an angry black teen.” To myself, in a way that identifies myself as a young black teen. My language reflects my childhood. I use words with my friend’s just express a certain feeling or meaning during the conversation. I’m not just full of profanity and slang, like I said I was taught to use proper language, I just chose when it’s appropriate and when I should use it.

I had a job interview during my freshman year for The Franklin Institute. I manage myself well I as greeted everyone in the room with a “Hello” or “Good Evening.” Questions like:

“Why would you be a good explainer for the PACTS program? What changes could you positively bring to the PACTS program if given this job opportunity? Who do you look up to in the PACTS program and will you step up and take someone else under your wing when you’re apprentice leaves?”

I answered every question, brought up by my fellow explainers, in complete sentences. An individual from the group of explainers and supervisors pulled me to the side and went on about how impressed he was, as a peer of minds, to as how I handle myself in the interview room. He admitted that he didn’t think I had the type of language in me considering the fact that he spent 4 years of his life with me outside of supervision or adults.

I’ve learned when and when not to use slang and proper language as I’ve grown up. There has been a time when I was young and I’ve walked up to an older adult such as my grandmother and said

“ wassup.”

“Don’t ever talk to your grandmother like that again!”

That was similar to the response I was given from my mom.

From the moment on slang coming out of my mouth was only used around my friends but as I got older if I was to use slang around my mom it was I who was joking, playing around. My 8th grade year was when I learned how and when to use proper English. I had to get ready for upcoming interviews so my mom began prepping me. I learned to sit up right when I answered questions. I learned to answer questions in complete sentences, and to keep a positive mindset throughout the whole interview. The more practice I received with and from my mom I by the date of my 8th  grade interviews I was superfluous. Walked in greeted the interviewees with firm handshakes, and continued on with conversations that started like,

"How are you today?"
"I'm fine yourself?"
"I'm excellent, lets began this interview."
"Okay."

"What made you apply to our school?"
"I applied after reading a brief overview about your school, and then further during research about the school to see if I'd be interested in spending the rest if my years at your school."
For the most part I answered the whole interview with answers like that. I was asked questions further on in the interview about how I could change the school, positive effects I could bring etc. there was a connection between interviews from school and work and how I handled myself. They all consisted of questions that would briefly have me answer and define why and how I could bring change to school/work. " A language which can connect their identity to, one capable of communicating the realities and value true to themselves." To me that quote means, someone who can't be real with themselves as they communicate to others isn't capable of communicating with others.

I write because ...

Posted by Octavius Collins in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 2:25 pm
I write to express how I feel without speaking. Sometimes I get so upset that my words may hurt the people I care about or just anyone in general. So, instead I just write/type how I feel. I adjust my writing depending if people plan on reading or If I give permission for people to read it or not. If I'm writing for example: class or for someone to review, revise or edit my paper in any sort than i'll make sure that the paper is formal proper, and full of correct grammar. If I'm writing for myself or just to empty out everything I'm holding inside then, I'll put whatever I feel. I'll curse, swear anything I want because I'm the only person reading at the end of the day. I don't write to intentionally hurt people feelings, but If I advice someone not read something personal, it's probably because it's something in their that they might not want to see, or I may just not want them to see it. I don't just write how I feel but I also write from my perspective of seeing/ viewing things.

Broken Mirrors

Silver

“Are you guys twins?” A lady would ask,

“Yes ma’am, we’re fraternal” I’d respond.
“Awww, what are y’all names?”
“Dwayne and, Octavius” we’d answer together.

“How old are you?” She’d individually as one of us.
“15.” I’d reply with a monotone voice.
She’d then continue with an ignorant follow up question like “ … and how old are you?” directed toward my twin.

People have a lot of misconceptions about what it’s like to be twins. A clear example of the conversation above. Twins are generally the same age unless for some miraculous reason one is born before 11:59pm on December 31st, but with my brother and I that isn’t the case. Assumptions have been made that my brother & I dress alike, act alike, even look alike, do the same things, like the same things, but the honest truth is that we are completely different.

I was always told that I had the exact traits and attributes of my father. I took his looks, personality, and that we were walking reflections of each other. Of course my brother was also a reflecting image of my mother. My mother and brother were just alike, she favors him. Even though we we’re twins we were treated a little differently. As I got older it became more of a problem but I always kept it to myself.
Since first grade my brother and I were always separated from each other. In 1st grade my mother detained him & had him repeat. It wasn’t a problem since we were still in the same school and we lived in the same house until I went to high school. Small things like getting home late, starting new sports, or problems at school is what separated us from each other. Each year we’d both run track, but last year I took it upon myself and decided I wouldn’t do any sports but more or so focus on my schoolwork, and my job. The examples of us being completely opposite start to fall in as he started 2 new sports and I stopped sports. By age 8 we hated dressing alike each other. That’s when we began dressing differently.

I’ve always been the tough one, the less sensitive one, I never went to my mom for help, hated asking for help, always tried to do things myself. My brother was a completely pole apart; he was the mamas boy, which wasn’t a problem because I favored my dad. The problem I had was that she favored him as a child and I felt that we should have been treated equally, but that’s beside the point. Although him being the technically older brother (by two and a half hours) I’ve always been told I act older. His goofy, and young adolescent ways are what became the explanation for as to why I had to act older. Some people even ask us do we fight and argue. The fighting had been frequently lately but the arguing is pretty consistent since we’re different and will always have our disagreements but it’ll never change my love for him.

I bet if I didn’t take the time out of my day to write and explain how all twins aren’t the same, and how my brother and I are complete opposites, the misconceptions of twins would still spread among other citizens that thought the same. Everyone is there own person regardless of how related you are, or how much differently you look, you’ll never find two twins completely the same.

Learning Months

Understanding months isn't very complicated. In here i will first explain what months are .
Obviously the English months began with January end with December. I'm going to write the month out and English. Then translate to Spanish.
January-Enero
February-Febrero
March-Marzo
April-Abril
May-Maya
June-Junio
July-Julio
August-Augusto
September-Septembre
October-Octubre
November-Noviembre
December-Decimbre
Ex. fecha de hoy es trienta de octubre dos mill diez . - Today is october 30th, 2010.
-By Octavius

Telling time

The way I would teach time in Spanish is to show my students an example of the clock in English and show them the same clock only in Spanish then I would make them solve the rest of the problem with the information of Spanish numbers that they know. I also would use hints of what stay the same and what changes.

Example

1:00= es la una
1:10pm= Es la una de la tarde
1:10am= Es la una y diez de la mañana
2-12= son las dos-doce

see I leave a hint to leave the"es la"(only use this for one) by bolding it and I also bold "de la""son las"(use for 2-12) and "y ___ de la". I would also put pictures and explain more that once.

This Blog is explaining how to use polite phrases from English to Spanish. I will use English polite phrases such as
Excuse me
Thank you
How are you
Good morning
Good afternoon
Good night
And translate them to Spanish.
Excuse me-Perdon
Thank you-Gracias
How are you- ?Como estas? / ?Como esta?
Good morning-?Buenos dias?
Good afternoon-Buenas tardes
Good night-Buenas noches
Examples: I drop my wallet and someone picks it up for me, and returns it. In in English i would say thank you. In Spanish I would say Gracias.
-Octavius

Greetings

The way I would teach Greetings and goodbye's from English to Spanish is to put the English version of the word on the left side and the one en espanol (in Spanish) on the right like as seen below you and then make the student make a dialogue of it

Hello
Hola
Good bye
adios
See you later
Hasta luego

Mary: hola

Tom: hola

Mary: hasta luego

Tom: adios

Mary: adios
-Joe

Origins/Name

Origins, are basically where you are from. Simply, where you are from, where you live, your name, and I'm going to add age in the category.

de dónde eres-where are you from?
¿dónde vive-where do you live?
cual es tu nombre?- whats your name?
me nombre/me amo-my name is...
¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono-whast your telephone number?
Ex: Me amo octavius, soy de filadelphia, vivo Norristown , numero telefono-267-345-6789.
