The goal of my project was to bring awareness the community and SLA on premature babies. Pre terms births and defects are the leading cause of newborn death in the United States. In Pennsylvania the premature birth is at 11%, majority in young teens and adults. So I wanted to get others informed on the subject in hopes that by 2014 the ratings may potentially decrease.

I chose premature awareness for this project because it is really important to me. There are many family members, including myself, who were born premature, some did not make it and I know how it feels to wait so long for a child to be brought into the world and only to have it be complicated or taken away from you. When I became apart of March of Dimes I got to see the smiles of families and children's faces as they are able to go around in life with something to fight for. I love to fight with them and with the help of many more, we can really create a change for the better.

Annotated Bibliography

- March of Dimes. (2012). March of dimes. Retrieved from http://www.marchofdimes.com/

This website is the main source of information. Includes team and personal blog for donations and fundraising goal.

- March for Babies. (2012). March of dimes.org. Retrieved from http://www.marchforbabies.org/

Though this is similar to it’s partnering site, March of Dimes, March for Babies has plenty of resources about prematurity and the research being made behind it. It includes interviews, videos, and list of past and upcoming events.

- The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation. (2012, February 19). Facts about prematurity. Retrieved from http://www.researchamerica.org/app/webroot/uploads/PrematurityFinal.pdf

I just gives a different perspective on the topic and I found it interesting the information is almost consistant

- LaKisha, Dixon. (n.d.). Interview by Siani Widman [Personal Interview]. Interviewing Kisha., Philadelphia, PA.

I’m going to interview her because she is a registered nurse, and has been apart of the NICU unit for little over a year. Her job is dealing with newborns and those who are premature or with illness.

- Rose, D. (2010, Sept. 10). March of Dimes. Retrieved from http://www.marchofdimes.com/research/researchslideshow.html

This is a research site that gives a summary about the March of Dimes foundation and when or who it was established by. The pictures used in the slideshow will be a nice part of my capstone.

- Lee, K. G. (2011, Novemember 14). Premature infant. Retrieved from http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001562.htm

I will be using this to get a medical history behind prematurity. Some facts and statistics will be helpful for sharing info among other people.

- Mehren, E. (n.d.). Interview by Allison Martin [Personal Interview]. An interview with elizabeth mehren, author of born too soon., Retrieved from http://www.prematurity.org/mehren.html

- Wrape, P. (2000). Prematurity research disproves the theory that preemies catch up by age three. Retrieved from http://www.prematurity.org/research/not-catchingup2.html

This site is more of a fun fact kind of site. Plus gives nice information on the technology and how with funding for these types of programs can make a better goal happen.

- Premature birth [Web log message]. (2012, November 7). Retrieved from http://www.cdc.gov/features/prematurebirth/

This gives another list of facts and treatment for infant babies put in the NICU.

March of Dimes - March for Babies

Posted by Siani Widman on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 8:26 pm
Hey everyone! This is your fellow senior Siani Widman. As a member of March of Dimes @SLA, I would like to invite everyone to come together and walk with me and more than 5,000 people from all over state at the 75th Anniversary March For Babies march, April 28th.

If you don't already know, March of Dimes is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. They've been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2 billion to benefit all babies. When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. If you have friends and family who want to join, bring them, ask everyone you can to walk with you.

If you are unable to do the walk but wish to help in another way, you can by raising money at SLA's team page at:
http://www.marchforbabies.org/team/t1976974

Click "Join This Team" and create a personal account, there you will be able to enter in the amount of money you get from sponsors and keep track.
Ask friends, family, neighbors, and local stores for donations any amount will be great. The teams goal is to raise at least $200 by the day of the walk.

The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten them.

SPREAD THE WORD!
Thank you all and I hope we have a successful event!

September 11- Response

I think the video that made an impact on me the most was the 2nd video with the guy never got over the fact that his wife had passed. It started off with the dead flowers and to be honest I never understood that part and why the flowers were the subject at the moment. The part when when it went to the guy and he was talking to his "wife" and looking for a new outfit for "her" to wear was really confusing. I assumed that she died during the plane crash and that it was sort of like an anniversary type thing.
Later, however, as the video progressed as the man was asleep, the twin towers were hit and as one began to fall the light began to come through the window into the appartment. That was the most powerful part of the video because it made me think like, imagine the people that were home close by as the towers collapsed and how the lighting and scenery changed. It made me think and left a big impression on me.
Then when the flowers came back to life and the guy woke up to them excited. He seemed happy to me but I just thought it was strange. It wasn't til the end that I realized that it wasn't until the light came in that the guy woke up from his delusion that his wife was long gone. Pretty sad ending and again very powerful as the last tower fell and its shadow disappeared from the outside walls of the appartment.

My group's topic for our project was on homelessness in Philadelphia. I was initially going to help with the design and flyers but then noticed how though I'm good at that, I am also good at doing the research in order for my group to continue on other things. So that became my job for the group, searching for any facts and statistics on the homeless in philadelphia. At first I thought it was going to be easy, but then it turned out to be a bit difficult and frustrating because there has not any new information or updated research on the topic in the last 3-4 years. Though that information is just as good, I was searching for news from now. For years I've known about the homeless and as I traveled around Philadelphia I've gotten to see them up close. But recently, in 2012, I noticed a lot more than usual. Maybe they were there all along but I wanted to know how that happened, if it had something to do with todays' economy or something personal. After numerous attempts, I was able to find some of the answers I was looking for which made me feel a little better and got the info to the rest of my group in time to do their part.

Overall I think I did a good job on my part but it could have been better. I haven't seen the keynote yet by Sammy or the pictures Isabella took, but the pamphlet and flyer Loren made with the information and facts was really good. We each had skills that was able to done and joined to make one good group. I still think that our group's project turn out well and I can't wait to see the finish project the day of presentation.
