Taylor Washington's Capstone

Posted by Taylor Washington in Capstone - Martin - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 11:51 pm
For my capstone I decided to become a vlogger and capture important moments of my senior on video. I decided to do this because I wanted to learn how to edit my own video on my own without asking for help every 3 seconds. Another reason why I chose to do this was because I really wanted to just have fun while learning what it takes to not only be behind the camera but behind the computer screen editing and uploading media.
So far I think the hardest thing about filming was the actual editing the video on a professional program. Even though it would have been 50 times easier to use iMovie. Having the patience and sticking to you idea was extremely important in this process. I learned that it's not always gonna be perfect and that's okay, something I wish I difrfrently is chose a better mentor and actually upload video once a week.

Herstory

Posted by Taylor Washington in Gender Studies - Menasion - d1 on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 1:19 pm

She is from a guy growing up with difficulties, from the not fitting in with the norm side and ostracism.

She is from the group Jews that practice nothing but good religious views.

She is from the encouragement to seek higher education, and being the caregiver of a possible family

She is from the boys cannot cry and should not express too much emotion from the mother that would shame you if her son suddenly became a daughter and Father that would put in all his money for a boys education and absolutely nothing in a girls education She is from the who am I and what am I. From I should be able to be loved for who I am and whom I love. She is from the Jewish community that wouldn’t dare accepts her sexuality. She is from Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love but cant seem to be loved.  She is from it all but wont let that make her fall.

Maniac Magee Book Review

Posted by Taylor Washington in English 3 - Rami - D on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 6:21 pm

If you haven't had the pleasurable opportunity to read Maniac Magee by Jerry Spenelli grab a copy from you local library as soon as possible. Allow me to introduce a style of writing that engages you into a story of a young boy trying to figure out where he belongs in this world of “equality” and understanding the community we live in. Jerry Spenelli is a fantastic storyteller, and write for his audience of adolescents. He has won over eight awards for his amazing books and creative way of telling realistic stories covering taboo topics of society, for example racism, sexism, and homelessness. In his writing he also includes humorous content to keep his audience excited to read on.

Final Portfolio

In september of my sophomore year I found out that I was in Mr. Blocks world history class. When finding this out I went to my sister which is and alumni of SLA for advice, thinking back I didn't really take it. I walked into the class thinking that it was going to be super boring because history is not what I would call my favorite subject in school. But immediately Mr. Block shut down the idea that it would be boring. The first day he gave out m&m’s and did an activity with us which I believe really engaged the class to learn more so they could possible get more m&m’s. This was just the beginning of many more interactive activities.

11 quotes from my work

1.) A messages that "The world is just" cartoon may be trying to get across to its audience is that the world will never be able to agree on what justice for all really means- Journal # 40

2.) People who work for social justice see the world as incredibly sad - pathologies of power worksheet

3.) American live in a fantasy land and fall in love with un real things- Vine Deloris worksheet

4.)It made us seem like freaks and that we do a lot of unnecessary things that when in reality thats not what the american culture is really all about. They totally twisted up our culture so just for this reason its not acceptable to judge another culture.- Journal #3

5.) How can another child of Buddah be trusted with knowing the truth?- Sacred text analysis

6.) Go to combat with HIV/AIDS, malaria and other popular diseases , without the education no one would be able to have the knowledge on how to control or overcome the disease.- Different views of development

7.)The point is that foreign investments are not the key to solving poverty. it might just be making them sink even deeper into poverty.- "Globalization worksheet"

8.) All I do is try.. I try but can never succeed in what I do. Being a stay at home has not been as good as the rich people make it look. My husband can not do this all alone… He is constantly losing his jobs because of his pride.-  Keystone pipeline monologue

9.) The Congo exhibit it to show that colonialism comes from hatred of one culture to another culture and trying to enforce change- quarter four benchmark

10.)Good afternoon jurors we are all here today to to figure out who is the blame for “dehumanizing" workers and corrupting the environment of the workers.- Sweatshop Trial

11.) Though each party shares the blame we believe the consumers and poor party allege make up the largest  portion of the shared blame. the country ruling elite are responsible for encouraging global sweatshops which is an important part in the problem. Without the encouragement from them there would be nothing pushing to have people working in ridiculous conditions. The consumers also take on majority of the blame because more than most of them are aware of the conditions the poor workers are living in and the ridiculous wages they make (or a lack there of), but they decide to ignore what they are paying for. we the System are innocent. the system is completely run by the people and the people who are running us  could also put in the effort to change us if they feel the system is not good enough. there is us  there are many other systems  that need some changes but we can only change if the people change.-Sweatshop Trial

Keystone XL Pipeline Monologue: Project

Posted by Taylor Washington in World History - Block - C on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 11:56 pm

My Streams first unit  in Mr. Block’s 10th grade WH( World History) class, we were to explore the pros and cons of the Keystone XL pipeline. The Keystone XL pipeline is a pipeline that has been proposed to the U.S by TransCanada to carry about 1,179 miles of tar sands oil from Canada all the way down to the gulf of Mexico. This proposed pipeline has been a big part of the news for a few years now. In this unit we have put ourselves in the place of the people that see this pipeline to have a major effect on their everyday lives.

(Basics)

The $5.3-billion Keystone XL Pipeline Project is the largest infrastructure project currently proposed in the United States. Construction of the 1,179-mile pipeline will require 9,000 skilled American workers. The project will provide jobs for welders, mechanics, electricians, pipefitters, laborers, safety coordinators, heavy equipment operators and other workers who rely on large construction projects for their livelihoods. -  http://keystone-xl.com/about/jobs-and-economic-benefits/

( What if it leaks)

While we must emphasize that a significant spill is unlikely, we must also be prepared for any potential circumstance. It’s important to understand that if a spill does occur, TransCanada is responsible for providing the cleanup expertise, equipment and personnel needed to reclaim a site to its pre-spill condition. - http://keystone-xl.com/safety/emergency-response/

( Who will be responsible)

‘’Canada is the environmentally responsible choice for the United States to meet its energy needs for years to come,” - http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/e2-wire/321089-canadas-keystone-pitch-to-us-work-with-us-on-climate

(Who’s Safest?)

Each day in the U.S. more than 2.5 million miles of pipelines move oil and other energy products safely to where they are needed — that’s enough pipe to circle the Earth 100 times. In fact the U.S. Department of Transportation has stated that pipelines are the safest method of moving oil — safer than tankers, trucks or rail.- http://keystone-xl.com/safety/pipeline-integrity/#sthash.LAgW2N4Z.dpuf

Grocery Stop.

Wife: Hey, umm can you point me to the white bread? ( wife runs) (store alarms go off)

Wife: (Silence)... sir please do not do this… I will give it back…I need to take care of my children… Please sir … Please...( starts to whimper)

( Sirens go off )

( Jail doors close )

Wife: All I do is try.. I try but can never succeed in what I do. Being a stay at home has not been as good as the rich people make it look. My husband can not do this all alone… He is constantly losing his jobs because of his pride.

Wife: no we have six kids 4 girls 2 boys miss.

Wife : And who are you?

Wife: What are you here for?

Wife: Maybe I shouldn't have asked that…Sorry… It's Sam correct?

Wife: Okay no more questions sorry.

Wife: But on with my husband… Do you have a husband… Sorry you don't need to answer that question… My husband though umm he is a great man that tries his hardest to take care of his family, he can get a little aggressive at times but I have to just calm him down a little… maybe a lot but thats not the point. He is a  great man.

Wife: There is this new job opportunity for my husband that I pray to god becomes available to him it could definitely help us get out of debt and feed our kids… I'm afraid that if he does not… He might hurt me and our kids. The plan is for him to work with the Keystone XL Pipeline that is to be built underground to carry oil through the U.S. It will be carrying what I believe is called tar sand oil...Yes its a bad kind oil but his boss promises that it will be watched over and controlled by professionals like my husband 24/7 365 days a year. Should pay very well too.

Wife: Sorry wish I could tell you more but... umm...my bail is here have a BLESSED day & stay out of this place… don't give the government more of a reason to want us blacks off the street.

Work at it's best.

Bill: Miss...Miss!

Police cars pull up

Bill: Drop the items & hands up behind your head where I can see them. ( officer starts to arrest woman)

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law you have the right to an attorney, if you cannot afford an attorney one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind do you wish to speak to me?

( after a long day of work police officer bill rants to his wife Jennifer )

Bill: Jennifer hunny do you know that I love you. You are just so beautiful. I could swear I have the best wife the lord could ever make. Could you… you know give me a little massage here… here...here...maybe a little down there and right here. Mmmmmm yeah... right there yeah you gotta know that yes you are awesome. How was my day? My day was a typical day on the job, giving people the same old same old speech about there right i swear they should have some sort of recording in our badges we could just push while we are in the process of the arrest. I mean look around there is all kinds of technology now a days you can basically do anything… Speaking of technology There was a major protest today that got a little out of hand. Ya heard about it? Yeah... yeah that one about that Keystone pipeline junk. Well today I had to take a lady elsewhere and as I was doing so she was explaining to me how bad of an idea this is and I learned a little something something about the XL crap. Jenn listen hun turns out those Canadians wanna build through our land and offer up over 20,000 construction jobs. Lord knows we need this for our country but why do they wanna do this to us? Why not send the pipeline up into Asia? Help them expand a little. Maybe they have some tricks up their sleeves? What do you think about it jenn? Why should it be good? Whatever I could care less I have a stable job. as long as canada doesn't have some crazy plan to blow up the U.S… I could care less about this stupid 1,700 mile long oil straw. What’s for dinner hun?

The Full Spectrum

The Full Spectrum:

A generation of writing about gay,

lesbian, bisexual, transgender,

questioning, and other identities.

The book  The Full Spectrum: ( A generation of writing about gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and other identities) edited by David Levithan & Billy Merrell. This book has been research upon by the SLR ( School Library Research), a research journal of the american association of school librarians. They’re research shows that in every high school there should be a LBGTG  literature for teens. Also on Goodreads it has over 1,000+ awesome reviews.

One of my favorite short stories/ journal in this book is “When you’re a gay boy in america” by Danny Zaccagnino. His section had an very engaging story about the way gay people are treated by society. When Danny was a young boy his boy scout counselor told him he was not a true scout.

Danny also shares about his tattoo on his back and what it symbols while also explaining how the same pain from the tattoo reminded him of the pain he went through for being a gay man. His tattoo is a dragon. The dragon represents a protector that will always have his back. But thats just one interesting story in the book of a teenager that went through plenty of struggle because of his sexuality.

Personal Experiences

I can somewhat relate to The Full Spectrum because a lot of these struggles I have witnessed happen to others as they were trying to come out of there shell if being “Straight” and being the sexuality of their choosing.

Opinion?

Yes I will love this book till death bring us apart, because one of the biggest strengths of this book is each journal entry they are all so unique it's almost like reading someones secret diary. If I could change any aspect of the book it would be to have sections for each theme of the book so that you kind of had a clue of what you were about to read.

Recommendations??

Yes I would definitely recommend this book  to anyone who is mature enough to be able to have a sort of understanding of the fact that the stories in this book are very extreme on the way people put there feeling out there. These teens deserve respect.

YATW Blog #3: Agent of Change

Posted by Taylor Washington in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 10:03 am
Hello my name is Taylor Washington, I'm a freshman  currently enrolled at Science Leadership Academy.

In my english 9 class I have been working on an year long project called "YATW" ( You And The World). This project has been designed to get us as students to get out in the world and make a change in any kind of way we felt necessary on a topic of our choice.

My topic is Teen Depression. This was the topic of my choice if you would like to view any of my recent blogs for my topic click here for blog #1 & click here  blog #2

The last part of the YATW project is to be an agent of change. For my agent of change part I decided to make a public service announcement and post on youtube Facebook and twitter. Also I wanted to get others opinions on what teen depression was exactly. For that reason I interviewed a few friends so I could get an outside view on things that wasn't just my opinion. My Youtube subscribers seemed to love it and it was very fun to sit and record my fellow peers as they expressed there feelings. Great conversations came out of this. Changing some peoples view on what teen depression is and how it can inter fear with your everyday life.

Studding and getting to know more about teen depression has impacted my personality in such a great way. I now think differently on the way that i treat people. I always try to keep a good attitude even when things are bad. And i believe this could be a start in minimizing the amount of teens that feel depressed and commit suicide/ has suicidal thoughts.

YATW: Teen Depression Blog#2

Posted by Taylor Washington on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 2:00 pm
Hello my name is Taylor Washington and I am a freshman here in SLA.Teen depression is a big issue going on in the Philadelphia area. I have been researching  more about this topic since my last blog post. Also I have conducted my own piece of research by sending out an survey to my student body. I found this to be a bit helpful to my research. About half of the people in my survey says that they have been though/ are going through depression. All of the people who took this survey are teenagers. In total 16 people took this survey and still counting. On my blue graph Six teens have  said yes that they have been through depression, which is 38% of the teens that took the survey. Five said straight up no (31%), and five also said kind of (31%). Another thing i found very interesting about my research was that half of the kids that took my survey know some one who has depression. Eight have said yes (50%). Three have said no (19%), and five said other (31%). To view my statistics for yourself as they grow click here!

You And The World: Child Depression, foster care

Posted by Taylor Washington on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 12:28 pm
Hello my names Taylor Washington and i'm soo happy that your reading my blog! Just a little backround about myself, i’m a freshman here at Science Leadership Academy, my advisor is Mrs. Martin, and i'm in Mrs. Dunn’s english 9 class.

Right now in Mrs. Dunn’s class we are working on a year long project. This year long project is called You And The World (YATW).

For this project we are choosing a issue that effects people and or animals that is meaningful to us, and become an “Agent Of Change”!  We must educate ourselves and our comunity about this topic to make a

change.

For my project, the issue that im going to be educating people about is depression kids in foster care/ orphaniges go thru and how to make them feel better about the situation that they are going thru.

This topic really sticks out to me because not only have i come very close to this experiance but, i have a friend that went thru depression because of the foster care situation.

AUP

Posted by Taylor Washington in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 12:32 pm
1. Name three major differences between the SLA AUP and the SDP AUP
In the SDP AUP they describe what people can and can’t do or watch. In the SLA AUP they have a category of what you can and can’t do.
2. What is the most unfair rule from both AUPs
The most unfair rule in SDP AUP is that you can’t bring your own hotspot. The most unfair rule in the SLA AUP is that you can’t keep personal files on your laptop.
3. With your group come up with three changes for both AUPs to make the policies better.
We think that the AUPs are fine and the consequences seem fair.
4. Now imagine you have children write an AUP for your home network with your group.

AUP

1. No inappropriate content.
2. No hacking into other people’s accounts.
3. Don’t touch other people’s computers without their permission.
4. Don’t download illegal things.
5. Don’t become friends with people you don’t know on the internet.
6. Respect everyone else on the network and on the internet.
