Positive and Negative Space Reflection

Posted by Zeshawn Rahman in Art - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 6:35 pm

  • A. What is negative space?
Negative Space is the space around an object drawn. The object drawn is the positive space, so space around it is negative.
  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
Negative space in the cut-out can be found by identifying the parts of it. In my cut out, you can see that since the object drawn is the owl (positive space) , the space around it (background) is negative space.
  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
This is useful because you can find hidden images, for example in a trophy drawing there are two faces.
  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
Similar to previous question-it can be used to "hide" images in your artwork and add detail without clouding your main focus.

1. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it).

Negative space can be defined by the space surrounding an object. Where you would have the positive space as the subject of a drawing or photograph, to find the negative space, you would reverse the image, so the emphasis isn’t on the subject anymore. Usually, negative space is white and positive space is black, because it’s more prominent. Negative space defines the positive space, they are interrelated.

2. Explain how you found negative space in 1. Your Cutout?, 2. In your stool drawing?

I cut out the image of the owl, which was the subject of the first side of the paper and glued it against the background. The background would become the negative space, because the owl was the subject. To emphasise the negative space in the second drawing, I simply reversed the colors of the negative and positive space, so that the color behind the owl in the first drawing became the color of the owl in the second drawing. I found the negative space in the stool drawing, by drawing the lamp, and instead of coloring the subject of the drawing black, I colored the background black. I found the negative space by locating the space around the outline of the lamp.

3. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

Negative space helps both the artist and the audience. It helps the audience view a part of the picture which isn’t normally focused on. And it helps the artist bring attention to this part of their drawing. It’s very important to be able to focus on the drawing as a whole. In this way, by using colors which create emphasis, you can frame the positive or negative space. If an artist is able to view the negative space, they can make decisions about how to keep the negative space proportionate to the positive space, to create balance.

4. How is negative space useful in creating art?

When you create art, you can control what the audience focuses on. If an artist wants to make certain aspects of the drawing pop and refrain from being too distracting, they can do that. In creating art, you can start the drawing by creating the space around the drawing, the negative space, rather than drawing from the positive space first.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the background of the image that is drawn. It is what's behind the image.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

The cut out showed negative and positive space as different perspectives. The blue on the black switched to the other side and changed to a different perspective. When I drew the stool drawing ( hair pik drawing) I drew the outline of the hair pik and shaded the background a dark color to show the shape of the hair pik.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see in negative space because it helps them see the negative side of things. Also, it changes their views of seeing pictures.

D. How is negative space useful in creating art?

Negative space is useful in creating art because it helps you really see the artwork. It focuses it in away.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative space is the intentional emptiness left in an image

B. Explain how you found negative space in
1. your cut out? By looking at the space that surrounded it and by looking at the opposite side of the page.
2. in your stool drawing. By looking at the surrounding background to see what image the negative space creates.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps an artist to see negative space because it allows them to freely create two images within one.

D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
Negative space is useful because it allows you to be able to imagine what you thinking the image is by looking at the negative space or surrounding background. For example an image might be one thing by looking at the surrounding background, and when looking at the negative space it may be something different.

Reflection:
  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it):  There are two space types in every photo, this is the base and the background.
  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?: there were diffrent shading so i just cut out the shaded part.
  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?: when using negative space it makes the main part pop more and be more defined.
  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?: So things are easier to see and it can pop more

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) Negative space is the clear blank empty spot that surrounds a picture of some form. B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing? I found negative space in my cut out by for when I was only cutting along the temple lines/curves as for two pieces of paper and so when I was finished I noticed one was filled and the other was an outline and so when I placed it on a background with a different colour , there was a clear sudden view of what was to be seen. For my stool drawling I noticed such by be just cutting out a stool and placing it onto my paper, and as shaded the whole thing and remove the cut out the white clear stool appeared and so it was highly visible C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?. It helps an artist because it gives certain qualities into a view that easy to see quickly. D. How is negative space useful in creating art? Negative space is useful in creating art because it provides focus, and focus on the certain shape/picture of something.

Negative space things

What is negative space- Negative space is the blank space around the main picture or object

I found the negative space in my cut out by not cutting the black paper and only cutting the red paper, I found the negative space in the stool drawing by only coloring around the object not inside the lines

Negative space makes it easier to see the surroundings of the main image

negative space is use full because it balances the picture out

A. What is negative space
Negative space is the space around an subject to emphases or show the image.
B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
The cut out was the outline for both halves but on one side its the outer lines and the other is the inner
The picture left white spaces that put together made my mind make an image of a stool
C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps to see negative space because the background needs to be able to support the image
D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
People use it to show hidden pictures

Reflection:

1. Negative space is all of the space around an object in a drawing or photo. It is everything but the subject or object. Negative space helps form the subject/ object in a photo/ drawing.

2. I found negative space in my cut- out because half of it was negative space that helped create the owl. I found negative space in my stool drawing because I used the negative space to actually draw my stool. Without the negative space in both of these art pieces, the object/ subject would not be as defined without the negative space.

3. Negative space helps an artist see the subject in art because the negative space is all of the space around the subject. So, the negative space helps define the subject more because it's the acrual surrounding art of the subject.

4. Negative space is useful in creating art because it basically forms the subject of the art. The space around the subject helps define and bring out the subject, so this can be useful.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) Negative space is when you have a drawing that has no detail and that is just the outline of the project and the rest of the paper is just black.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing? The way I saw negative space in the stool drawing or flower in my case was when I was coloring the paper in i could see the outline of the flower and there was nothing in it just white space. For the cut out I saw that the second half of the bat was nothing more then just a outline combined with the other half.

 C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? I think it can help because when you don't know how you want to start it a outline will give you a visual of what its going to look like in the end and if you like it you can do it a plus it also make it look like a outline of a drawing

D. How is negative space useful in creating art? I think that negative space is useful in creating art because you have the out line when you have negative space if you are unsure about you drawing the negative space can give you a way of what i looks like plus its something that is easy too do and i know people that are not creative can do this without being artiest
