Vaughn Matthews Capstone

Posted by Vaughn Matthews in Capstone · Giknis · Wed on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 8:05 am

For my Capstone, I did workshops at my old school, A. B. Day Elementary School. I worked with kids in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. In the process of completing my capstone, It included weeks of research, planning, and communication. I did research on the learning styles of each grade group. I also researched what things they were interested in, so I knew what topic I would do for each workshop, and ideas for icebreakers to do before the workshop. With planning, in my calendar, I marked the topics of each workshop in each day, and the class room number that I would visit. I did workshops like high school expectations for 8th graders, and music for 6th graders. Communication was a thing that was a challenge with my capstone. The principal and vice principal of A. B. Day were very busy, and they had trouble replying back to my emails about what days I would go in.
Overall, I had fun doing my capstone. One thing that I learned is how to handle kids that misbehave. One of the 8th grade classes that I visited, was full of kids that were really bad, and I was able to do calm them down and get them to talk. It seem like the deeper I got into the lesson the more kids became involved, especially when I took the time to share new experiences and stories. I believe Here is a link to the slideshow of pictures of the high school expectations workshop with the 8th graders:

Be Kind, or Be Cruel

Be Kind, or Be Cruel

Comparing “Taming of the Shrew” to “Silver Linings Playbook”

“The Taming of the Shrew” tells a story of romance between an unusual man name Petruchio and an ill-mannered woman named Katherine. Petruchio uses Katherine as a part of his plan, to marry and receive riches. In “SIlver Linings Playbook”, Bradley Cooper plays Pat, a former teacher who moves back in with his parents after  astint in a mental instituion.. Jennifer Lawrence plays Tiffany, a girl who just lost her husband. She’s also friends with Nikki, Pat’s wife. Pat uses Tiffany as a part of his plan to get back with his wife Nikki.

As I read “Taming of the Shrew” and watched “Silver Linings Playbook”, I noticed that both Petruchio and Pat used the same tactic to manipulate women, to only receive what they wanted. In the relationships, both males only wish to benefit themselves, and not the female. The males have different reasons and they have different ways of getting to their goal. Petruchio use the tactic of being mean, and Pat uses the tactice of being kind. These texts both show that real love doesn’t exist, and that no matter the time period men only use love as a way to get what they want.

Quote #1

"Petruchio: Good Lord, how bright and godly shines the moon!

Katherine: The moon? The sun! It is moonlight now.

Petruchio: I say it is the moon that shines so bright.

Katherine: I know it is the sun that shines so bright

Hortensio: Say as he says, or we shall never go

Katherine: Forward, I pray, since we have come so far,"

Act 4, Scene 5, Lines 3- 7, 14-15 (Pages 185 & 186)

In this part of the play,  Petruchio and Katherine plan on going to see her father. In these lines, Petruchio and Katherine argue about what time of the day it is. Because Katherine is so mean, Petruchio gives her a taste of her own medicine, in a way to tame her. He does this manipulate her into liking him, in a way of love. Once he could do that, he could marry her, and get her riches.

Image #1

download.jpg

In this scene from “Silver Linings Playbook”, Pat and Tiffany go out to eat dinner. Tiffany sees this as a sign of love. Pat uses the dinner date as a way to get close to Tiffany, so he can get close to Nikki.

Unlike Petruchio, Pat is nice to Tiffany, so she can like him. Once Pat gets her to like him. He can get close to Nikki, because like said before, Tiffany is good friends with Nikki.

Quote #2

"Thus have I begun my reign,

And ‘tis my hope to end successfully.

My falcon is now sharp and passing empty,

And till she stoop, she must not be full-gorged

For then she never looks upon her lure.

Another way I have to man my haggard,

To make her come and know her keeper’s call."

Act 4, Scene 1, Lines 188- 194 (Page 151)

In this part of the play, Petruchio speaks of how he’s going to starve Katherine. In thes elines he explains why he’s going to do this. In line 190 he says “My falcon now is sharp and passing empty”. When he says falcon, he’s talking about Katherine, calling Katherine his falcon. When he says “sharp and passing empty”, he’s saying that she’s very hungry. When he says “And till she stoop”, stoop means fly directly to the keeper or to the prey, saying that Katherine will fly to him. When he says “For then she never looks upon her lure”, lure means the bait held by the keeper, Petruchio being the keeper. Petruchio is going to make sure she doesn’t know what they have isn’t real. When he says “Another way I have to man my haggard, man my haggard means to train a falcon, like said before, Petruchio is calling Katherine his falcon. In the last line when he says “To make her come and know her keeper’s call” he means Katherine come back to him when he wants. Petruchio does this cruel act so he can have control over Katherine. If he has control over Katherine, she won’t act so ill-mannered, and he can marry her. Once he marries her, he can get her riches, what he really wanted.

Screenshot 2016-04-24 at 5.42.17 PM.png

Screenshot 2016-04-24 at 5.42.50 PM.png

This scene is from the beginning of the movie, when Pat and Tiffany first meet. Pat gives Tiffany a compliment on how she looks nice. After she replied saying “Thank you”, he said he wasn’t flirting with her. Pat said he was saying she looked nice as “practice”. This “practice”  was for him to better hisself so he could get back to his wife. This was when Pat realized he could use Tiffany to his advantage.

Again, Pat uses the tactic of being nice, unlike Petruchio. Right here, this is the beginning of how

“Taming of the Shrew” and “Silver Linings Playbook” are prime examples of how men use love on females to get what they want. They show that it may seem real, but it isn’t true love. Being that they were from two different time periods, that shows that things still haven’t changed about men using love on women to benefit themselves.

The Best Personal Essay I've Ever Written

Posted by Vaughn Matthews in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 12:50 am

The inspiration for my personal essay is from the book The Things They Carried. In the beginning of the book, one of the characters, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters, which reminded me of a personal experience. It also reminds me of how the world sees love as a thing that two people should share. Now, I have a better understanding of what love really is and what it entails.

I will never forget the time I thought I was in love. It was two summers ago.

I thought that I was in love with a girl named Eleonora Guzman. Her real name was Eleonora but everyone she knew called her Ellie. We graduated from our middle school, A B Day, together. We knew each other since the fifth grade,  what would be eight years now . Ellie and I were in an on and off relationship since the 7th grade, going up to the 9th. It wasn’t like we were in a relationship, then broke up and got back in a relationship a week later. What happened was we were together in the 7th grade and broke up a few months later. We got back together in the 9th grade and broke up a couple months later.

In my 9th grade summer she was in a relationship with one of my best friends, Dontae. At first, I was cool with it, but out of nowhere I caught feelings for her again.

Well, not exactly, “out of nowhere”.

Eleonora and I had a conversation one night, and  she said something that really made me feel some type of way. We said some things that weren’t appropriate. We said things that I knew Dontae would not like. A few nights after Ellie and I had the conversation, Dontae saw the messages and he found out that we were talking and he saw what we were talking about. Dontae and I stopped talking to each other after he found out.

Everyday Ellie and I would write each other letters. We wrote letters because her mom was very strict and she didn’t let her outside, and she wouldn’t let Ellie use her phone because she knew that Ellie would use it to talk to me or Dontae. I would get her the letters by dropping them off to her apartment window every morning after dropping off my younger brothers at summer camp.

In the letters Ellie wrote to me, she would say how she thinks I’m a great guy, but she loves Dontae, and she doens’t want to leave him. In my opinion, when we were together, I treated her better than Dontae did, so I didn’t understand why she would want to stay with him if I treated her better. But I cherished those letters and read them as if she would leave him and stay with me forever.

One day, I wrote her  a letter asking her to come to bible study at church. It would have been one of our only chances to see each other, and she took that chance.

Somehow, Dontae found out that Ellie went to church and he showed up with one of me and Dontae’s friends, Jahsil. Jahsil came inside and told Eleonora “Dontae is outside and  he’s really mad. He said coem outside.”  I stood up to see Dontae, and Ellie stood up and pushed me

down telling me to stay.

Ellie stepped outside and I didn’t hear anything but the sound of her and Dontae’s voices yelling at each other. She came back in and said nothing, and we didn’t say a word to each other for the rest of the night.

A few days later, I was playing kickball with some friends and Dontae walked up to me. As he was walking up, his demeanor looked as if he was going to hit me. There were two kids with him. One of them was Jahsil,  and the other one was a kid I didn’t know.

“Why didn’t you tell me that Ellie texted you the things she did?” He asked me

“I didn’t know how to tell you, I wasn’t thinking.” I told him.

“You are supposed to be my brother. You are supposed to be like family. I trusted you and you did me dirty. You’re a crazy bull .” He said as he walked away shaking his head.

“You should have hit em’. Knock him right out.” One kid whispered to Dontae.

Yea, you should have hit em” “another kid agreed.

I didn’t even finish playing dodgeball. I went right home after that.

That night I sat in my room and I listened to music. I listened to music for hours. From Tupac to Kendrick Lamar,  Nas to J. Cole, and Childish Gambino to Chance the Rapper.

After 5 hours, I stopped listening to music, and I started to think.

I thought for hours.

I realized a few things. One thing I realized was that I couldn’t let this whole situation ruin me and Dontae’s friendship. We’ve been best friends since kindergarten, and we never did each other wrong.

Another thing I realized was that I didn’t really love Ellie. I thought I did. I didn’t really love her, I just loved the good times we had. She would have good moments, but she wasn’t a good person.

A few days later, I decided to go to Dontae’s house to talk to him about everything. So after I dropped off my younger brothers at summer camp, I walked to Dontae’s house.

I walked up to his door and rung the doorbell. I could hear his mom’s footsteps come down the stairs as she came down to get the door

“Who is it?” She asked. as she walked up to the door

“Vaughn” I answered.

She opened the door and welcomed me in.

“Dontae! Vaughn is down here to see you!” She yelled.

“He is in the shower. He will be out in a minute.” His mom said.

“Vaughn, I haven’t seen you in a minute. How have things been?” She asked.

“Things have been a bit rocky between Dontae and I.” I replied.

“What happened?” She asked.

I explained to her everything that happened with me, Ellie, and Dontae. Dontae came downstairs by the time I finished explaining everything to her.

“What’s up.” He said as he gave me a handshake.

“I came to talk to you about everything. First off, I  sincerely apologize on my part of everything that happened. I should have told you that she sent me those messages. I admit that I was wrong.” I told Dontae.

After that we talked for almost an hour about where it started, and the things we should’ve did, and Dontae apologized for how he acted.

At the end of the whole discussion Dontae and I agreed to never let a girl make us mad like we did. We agreed to never let a girl get in between our friendship again.

It took us about a week or two to get back on good terms. Dontae and I did a couple things before we became really cool.  We played videogames and we played  basketball  for long periods of time and we had more one-on-one conversations before we really got things like they used to be.

Morally, I learned that I didn’t love Ellie. More than that, I learned she didn’t love me. This taught me that you can love someone, or think you love them, and they don’t love you back. A poet from Mumbai named Sanober Khan said herself, “the saddest thing is to be a minute to someone, when you’ve made them your eternity”, and to Ellie, I was a minute instead of an eternity.

Vaughn Matthews 2fer Revision

The Importance of Sports

Whether it involves health, economics, or entertainment, sports have a very positive effect on the world around them. However, the most important reason that sports is popular is that sports are a form of of diversion from the burdens of life.

Sports keep the body in shape and keep it fit. People say it’s important to do physical activity for 60 minutes a day. Almost every sport uses all of a person’s body parts in order to the play it correctly. When played for a long time, it can result in a healthy body and good health. When playing for a team, there are practices, games and events. These practices in the sport involve exercise. Practices are held almost every day and are usually an hour or longer. During practices, the person is focused on playing at their best, not what’s going on in their life.

Sports have always been considered entertainment. The word “sport” comes from the Old French desport meaning “leisure”,  The oldest definition of sports dates back to the 1300s is “anything humans find amusing or entertaining,”. June 16 will make 70 years that the NBA has been broadcasting games for joy and the entertainment of fans. The FIFA World Cup is the world’s most widely viewed sporting event. “an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany and the 2010 event in South Africa was broadcast to 204 countries on 245 different channels.” according to fifa.com. This is important because when soccer fans watch the world cup, they’re caught in the moment. They’re worried about what’s happening in the game and not what’s happening in their life. It gets them hype for a little while.

Sports can also bring people together. Two years ago, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) had lost a teammate Nick Pasquale, in a car crash. His number was 36. Signs were hung everywhere with red and blue ribbons to show support for Pasquale. The number 36 was painted on banners and fans had put out a few hundred blue and gold balloons during the moment of silence for Pasquale. When the Nebraska Cornhuskers played UCLA they had the number 36 as a decal on the back of their helmets and after the game members of both teams joined in a prayer at the center of the field together. This is an example of how a sports game can bring people together, and lift their spirts even though a a tragic event had happened to them.

Sports are a way of departure from the heavy loads of life.  A sports game is like an unscripted drama. The result of each game is unknown by everyone. Some people say “it is only a game”, but is the Grand Canyon “only a hole?” Absolutely not. While watching or playing sports, the mind is not focused on what is happening in real life. It’s focused on what is happening in the game. The mind is focused on what is happening in the present and what is going to happen. When the mind is focused on what is happening in the sport, it’s not worried about the bad things that are going in someone’s life.

As previously stated, sports have been around for over a decade. People have very different views and outcomes of them. They result in good health and keep the body fit, they entertain people, they bring the community together, they bring wealth, and they keep the mind off of the worries of life. This is good for the whole world because keeping the mind off your burdens helps someone stay positive . Overall, they have a positive effect on the world.

I had a lot of work to do in the “Thesis” category.  Before the revision I didn’t do such a great job on the analysis relating to the thesis. I also had to make corrections with my style and how I arranged my 2fer.

Climate Change Monologue Project

Posted by Vaughn Matthews in World History - Block - B on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 12:33 pm
Part I: In our World History class we are learning about climate change, and how it affects the world and things of that nature. My partner, Ona, and I made our monologues from the views of different people. My first monologue is about a girl who does a presentation about climate change to her 7th grade class. She shows how she feels about climate change. My second monologue is about a man in Australia who has a dream about viewing climate change. He learns how climate change affects him and other people.
Part II:
1st Monologue

Hi, My Name is Mona

I can’t believe I’m about go up in front of the class. Someone always getting picked on for doing things like this. Hi, my name is Mona  I know most of you probably don’t know me. I’m up here to show you guys my presentation on climate change. I feel like it’s important that children my age should know about climate change. I say this because when we grow up, we will already know about climate change and we can help make India get better when climate change happens. Droughts are happening. People are dying. House are tearing apart. What if this happened to you? What if you lost your home? Your family? Your food? Your everything? These things are what kids our age take for granted. And I feel like I should let people know about this. Furthermore, there are many effects of climate change. For example, year after year, the Baghmatti River fills up with rain and rushes down from the Himalayas to small villages and tears down people’s homes.  It pulls away cattle and goats, it knocks down many mud houses, and it killed a large number of people. This made many people sad, like Pavan Devi. His 19-year-old son, Vikas Kumar, was swept away by a fast moving stream, when he went to a communial toilet in the fields. In Dhanaur, for almost three months of monsoon, everyone’s lives depend on the water’s mercy. The ones left save food and grains and save firewood, to prepare for this yearly calamity. The poor people beg for food to borrow and eat, and they camp out on higher in tents that are made of cement bags. Now, because of the monsoon and climate change, these people live differently.  I think we should make a change, by helping these people and other people. We should come together as one and help each other! Thank you for your time.

2nd Monologue

Dream

All I see is darkness. Where am I? This doesn’t look like Australia. Is this Australia? Where’s my wife? Where’s the rest of the factory workers? It’s so hot here! (Rubs eyelids) Oh, everything is looking clearer now... I can see better now. And there’s my beautiful wife Olivia. She’s fanning herself. Olivia! Olivia! I wonder why can’t she hear me. It’s starting to get really hot again. I realized, she can’t see me, so I guess I’ll go see what the boys are up to.

(Jack walks away. He walks to the factory) Whew! It’s cold. (Looks to the other men) And there’s the boys! (Waves trying to get their attention) Oliver! Isaac! Henry! (Looks I guess they can’t hear me either. I wonder why? (Jack notices that Oliver, Isaac, and Henry are wearing winter coats and are shivering as they try to work He looks away) Now it’s cold! (Shivers) The weather has been very strange today. The climate is changing like crazy today! (Jack walks out of the factory and onto the street and sees two homeless men) Do you have any money you can spare mate? The weather is crazy out here! No! (Jack runs away. He looks up to the sky. He notices that it is cloudy) Today has not been a good day. Olivia doesn’t talk to me. Oliver, Isaac, and Henry won’t talk to me either. Can this day get any worse? (Jack hears a roar of thunder and it starts to rain) Just great. Really great. Thank you mother nature! Thank you for being hot, and cold, and rainy! (Jack puts his head down and starts walking forward) Jack! (Jack picks his head up and looks at the person speaking  Don’t worry Jack. It’s just climate change. You’re noticing how the climate is changing. Also, this is a dream. (Olivia dissapears. Jack sits up on his bed. He looks to his left to see his wife Olivia. He kisses her on her left cheeck and runs outside. He sees his group of friends from the factory. He sees the 2 homeless men and gives them 20 dollars) Here! Have a good day mate! You don’t know what you have til it’s gone.

3rd Mononlogue

Robby, 17 year old boy  (Sjögren's syndrome, Smart.)

Human Health

“Breathing”

Good Morning,  How's everyone feeling ? I’m here to talk about the climates impact on health. Some of you may walk away with the feeling of wanting to help, others with the feeling why do I care. But the goal I hope to accomplish is only making you aware of it. But Let me tell you a little about who I am.  My name is Robby I was diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome when I was 6 years old, I am now 17. It was a shock to everyone, because no one had the syndrome in the family, so it wasn’t hereditary. At first we thought I had lupus, but with a serious amount of other tests ran we discovered the real thing was Sjögren’s Syndrome. I used to feel like an outcast, I was different, I couldn’t do what other kids did. The simple things I couldn’t do. for a while my  best friend was an oxygen mask. When I started to get better and regularly take my medicine, I started to meet people with the same disease. In school, I had more confidence and I actually began to join different groups. I started to invest my time in environmental science. It became a hobby. **You have any water ? Thank you, my mouth was a little dry. I’m sorry class, Okay good, I’ll continue. Around the time of the spring that just passed, I started to experience a more intense pain. Every so often I would have this feeling, my heart would  run a mile a minute. At any moment it felt like it would burst. My chest would tighten like a fist beginning to close. I’ve never took anything for granted, because that feeling burned in my chest every time I did. Of course my parents and I  were worried so I went back to the doctors. I was switched to different and stronger medicines. One of my doctors mentioned the change in my health might be due to the environmental changes. I was very book savvy and already involved in science so I did some research. I found that climate change affects those with respiratory issues and allergies. Along with asthma, food borne, insect borne, and heat related issues. The respiratory and allergy related issues applied to me, so I did further research. The spring pollen season was happening earlier and lasting longer. For example, Ragweed is a popular flowering plant and it was shown that the amount of pollen production is increased during this spring season. Tests on ragweeds also showed that high carbon dioxide concentrations and temperatures increased the amount. This not only told me that I needed to take my medicine, but told me there are high carbon dioxide levels. This carbon dioxide is causing climate change and pollution is due to carbon dioxide emissions.  **Gasp, I just said a lot . Everyone with me ? Kinda ? No ? Okay. So all this carbon dioxide we’re producing is polluting our air and effecting things that we may not know about. Which is our health. I thought this needed to be shared to other people, as young children we may feel like we can’t make big changes. But we sometimes fell to realize the little things we do can contribute to the big. Awareness is change, people’s knowledge and views change due to awareness. Twice a week I visit schools like yours and find kids who are interested in taking apart in the this movement. Thank you for your time. A you all have been a great audience. ** Sigh of  relief* Okayyyy mom, I’ll be down in a sec. I Guess I better run through it again after dinner so I’ll be ready for the big day tomorrow.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the background of the image that is drawn. It is what's behind the image.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

The cut out showed negative and positive space as different perspectives. The blue on the black switched to the other side and changed to a different perspective. When I drew the stool drawing ( hair pik drawing) I drew the outline of the hair pik and shaded the background a dark color to show the shape of the hair pik.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see in negative space because it helps them see the negative side of things. Also, it changes their views of seeing pictures.

D. How is negative space useful in creating art?

Negative space is useful in creating art because it helps you really see the artwork. It focuses it in away.

a. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before?
One thing that I learned that I didn't know of was the vanishing point. It helped me alot with my project. It helped with the angle and showing the perspective idea.

b. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better?

Learning this helped me a lot actually. It helped by teaching me a lesson on neatness, and effort, and putting time into my work.

c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

There are a couple things I would do differently. First thing I would do is get a better picture of the wall, so I know what to include in my drawing. What I would also do is draw lighter, so if I make a mistake the pencil marks won't still be on the paper.

d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

Look for tips on drawing a one perspective drawings, and take your time drawing it. If you want it to be neat, take your time.

e. What resource helped you the most and why?

The resources that helped me the most were the websites from the past drawings, and the pictures I got from my friends.

Vaughn's Q2 Media Fluency Slide

Posted by Vaughn Matthews in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y1 on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 7:47 am
My slide is on track. I chose track because track is one of my favorite sports. I run track and I love track with a passion. Alot of people I know have been running track for a long time and love track like  I do. I chose to put Usain Bolt in my picture because he is a role model to athletes who run track and he is very fast and athletic.I love track because when I see how bad I am at any other sport, I look back and see how good I am at track. You win some, and you lose some. Lose or win, when I run track, I always feel like I'm a winner.

I made two changes to my slide. My first change was the font of the words. I changed the font because I didn't like the font and I thought it should be bigger so it would look better with the picture. The second change I made, was the color of the words. I changed the colors of the words because people suggested that I should change the color. So I changed the color, so it would flow with the the lights behind and around  the runner, Usain Bolt. I learned that font makes the slide really noticeable and color is important.
