Q1 art

Posted by Anonymous in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 8:40 pm

This quarter in art I think I have been able to identify the things I need to improve on as well as have improved on since last year. Normally I would just take the easy way on or do what I am used to in order to get the project done and enjoy at the same time. My original idea was to write poems instead of draw because I was caught in my comfort zone. Ms.Hull encouraged me to try and get better at drawing. Ms.Hull said to me "I can teach you how to draw." I have gained the patience and understanding on what shadowing as well as 3d objects look like.

My first drawing was the first body portrait of Sammy. I do not have a picture because it was destroyed in the hallway. I think that my portrait was better last year because of the angle I was standing at last year. It was a front view of my model. I had to draw the side of her which was a challenge. I wish I had a visual to show the difference between last years to this years. I always enjoy doing the full body portraits because it tests my creativity and my ability to tackle the project accurately.  The second assignment of the quarter was drawing a clear object such as glass or bottle. I think this os the assignment that gives me the most trouble i redid my object three times. I didn't want to look at the tutorial that was provided for us because it would put a damper on my creative thought process and I would try to duplicate what was shown to me, not what I actually see.I enjoyed this quarter once again it is always a enjoyment learning new techniques.

Quarter 1: Life size model drawing

Posted by Brittany Riggins in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 8:39 pm

This was the first project that I was assigned to do and I first thought there is no way that I can ever draw a life size human being and I have never done this in my life. That is when my insructor (mrs. Hull) told me not to say I can't do it because I,can but I just have to try and from there I started. when I first started out I had one model but them that drawing got thrown away so I had to start over once I stated over I was bot completely happy with what I had but I thought with a little tweaks here and there it would get better, until that one got thrown away by someone, needless to say at this point I was beyond frustrated because now this is my third time drawing, but I did not give up I started one last time but this time with a different model because the one I had started with with not there that day. The tool that I used to draw the life size drawing it called pastels. I am happy thati got threw it and drew what I could to the best of my abilities, I was very inspired while drawing to music and looking at how other people approached drawing their life, size drawings. Thank you for reading my blog post and viewing my art

Quarter 1: Clear Object Drawing

Posted by Brittany Riggins in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 7:38 pm

I would like to welcome you to look at my first clear drawing. I am in advanced art and one of the assignmets we were assigned to do is to pick a glass object and draw it as you see it. The object should appear from your point of view and should be as detailed as possible. The object that I chosr to draw was the one I thought would be the simplest, I was wrong but I chose a sort of bowl shaped object. When I first started the object I was hesistant to start becuase I didnt want to mess up, I soon got over that and decided thst I would start, from the simplest task and draw lightly. We were insructed to use a tool called charcol which is a skinny black chalk like tool and it can break very easily. My first step was some thing called shading, to do this i just took the charcol on its side and move the tool up and down left and right and then take your hand and kind of smear it in just a little bit. After I had my background all set I move on to the bowl. I first drew the top of the bowl how I seen it and then I drew the aide of the bowl and tried to make them as even on both sides as possible because the bowl is wide this was at times frustrating but I would shade again and start over. The next part is the inside of the bowl on the bottom is a circular part of the bowl but to the eye it is invisible so I had to draw it and then shade the inside of it, shading is my favorite part of the art process by the way with this project. After I drew the object the best I thought it looked it was time to put what I call the glare into the bowl where the light hits it. When I did this I had to use an eraser to give it that affect. I loved this part to I found it interesting that just with little tweaks here and there you can really make a picture come alive. After I drew this object I felt really good about it and it also made me feel more confident about doing other art in the future. I n this process I really got most of my inspiration and motivation from watching everyone in the class and watching, how their art hhas changed witht the drawing and re-drawing and changing thier perspectives and starting over. I like yhe fact that with this perticular piece we had time to think about what,we wanted to draw, and how we wanted to draw it. This gave this project more or a free independent feel rather then an assigment that you have to get done and over with. I hope you enjoyed reading my blog post about my spectacular clear art.

Q-1: Still object drawing

Posted by Fangda Luo in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 10:04 pm

I do this work because we have to draw something that is glass. Also, the sketch can be sort of a warming up for me to draw the school's yearbook cover. In this process, I am trying to make my drawing as accurate as possible, and this turned out to be successful.

I only use pencil to draw this drawing and I use pencil to draw most of my sketches because it is the tool I am most skillful with. For the object I drew, I drew this object simply because I think it is beautiful. It looks really nice for a white flower to put in a transparent glass pot with water in it. The skill I use on this sketch is that I shade on the frame of the picture layer by layer, from the darkest part the the lightest part, while not miss anything and not confuse the value of even the smallest area.

This is not the first time I sketch flowers and I really enjoy it. Since flowers will soon wither after they are picken, so whenever I can draw a flower, the beauty of the flower can stay on my drawing for a long time. This is really satisfying for me. But still, I finished this picture in two class periods. In this case, I drew the shade in the second class period when I can not find the flower anymore. So I have to go and look for some images on the internet to complete my drawing. Well, from the final drawing you can all see that this worked. It's quite successful, so I write my signature at the bottom right corner of the drawing.

Q-1: Portrait

Posted by Fangda Luo in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 9:42 pm

There is no difference for me to draw a portrait of a person from which direction or with what pose. In my point of view, as long as a person wants to draw, he can draw an awesome picture as long as he want to. I am the one who have a great passion on drawing, so I spent months and months to practice drawing skills before and up to now, I am always serious about every picture I draw. I only spent 2 hours in all on this portrait, but I hardly turned away my focus in these two hours. Well, the result turned out to be good eventually, although there are some places I think I still need to change a bit.

I first thought of using color chalks(That's how we call those things in China, but I don't know the exact name here.) to draw the big portrait. But since I am not quite familiar with how to draw on such a big paper and the color of drawing materials is limited, so I first use a light color to draw the frame of the model and than I use charcoals to put the shade.

As I am not very familiar with drawing on such a big paper, it is a bit weird for me in the beginning of the drawing. But after I measured the ratio of different parts of the model's body, the drawing gradually became easier. Just as I said, the result turned out to be okey, but I think I have to focus on the congruity of the ratio of a person's upper part of the body to the bottom part. For example, in this portrait, the legs of the model should be longer.

Q1 Drawings

Jasmine

I drew this as a portrait to Jasmine. In the beginning it was suppose to be of Sam Boyd, but I kept having to start over. I drew Jasmine as I saw her and the best way I could. Her shoulders I drew broad to represent her inner and outer strength which she shows everyday. I drew her waist slim and her butt big wide because it is.

Bowl

I drew the bowl the best I could. I didn't really know how to make my drawing pop out like the artist's picture that he drew on the monitor. The shading aspect is also something that I need to work on as well. I think I did ok but I want to practice on making my pictures seem more realistic.

Clear Object Drawing

Artist Statement

The glass cup was more complex then what I actually believed it was. The goal I had was to make a clear object appear on a white paper. Although it was challenging, it was done. With shading, darkening spaces, and erasing.

I first started by taking the black charcoal piece that I had and lighting scribbling over my paper. I then drew a outline of what I imagined the cup to look on paper. Heigh wise, the roundness of it... everything. Then by looking at the size of the paper, I realized that the proportions were off. I then made another attempt at the glass cup. I figured it was too dark for what my goal was to be so then I finally got it right and made my master piece.

I made sure that there was lighting and the shape wasn't a black outline because evidently a clear object isn't black, it's clear. Over all the final product that was made, I was very content with.

Life Size Figure Drawing

I love the color yellow. I began with simple pastel strokes and it went from there. I choose to make an outline of the model on how I saw it at the moment. Her leaning to the side with her hand on her hip is what I needed and wanted to draw out.

I decided to shape the model's body how she can be seen in person. She had on a hoodie and some jeans with her belt sticking out. As the kept going on I decided to add in the small details such as the knee shading and leg stance. I made the weight that she was putting her body on noticeable. I found myself making the head smaller than the body so I tried to adjust that by rounding out the strokes heavier and making the chin and neck thicker. I choose orange for the shirt under the model's hoodie because I believed that that well suited the color orange.

In my future drawings of life size figures, I will choose to focus on even more lighting and shading. I also will continue to draw what I see in person.

Figure Drawing

Posted by Paige Wayman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 7:39 pm

We were assigned this project to learn how to draw human figures from looking at different angles of the body. This gave me a good understanding on how the human body should be presented on paper, from head, to toe, using a variety of colors, and techniques to make the picture come alive.  In this project, I believe I mostly struggled with the shaping of the body, because I was on an angle where everything was to the side. So shaping the neck, and then having it follow through to the shoulders, and arms, I think was the most hardest part. I also had some difficulties with the angling of the body in a way in which would match the models pose, but besides that, I think I did well. My most favorite work was coming with the dynamic shape of the body, even though its not perfect or in the right position where I want it to be, overall I think the attempt of me actually coming up with a shape, I believe is an accomplishment to me.

When starting this project I first watched Emma, to give myself some sort of starting position because there was so many places where I could’ve started, that all of a sudden I became lost. So, I first started with the head, and started to make my way down, and from there I started drawing the feet, the hands, the butt, and the legs. After the shape of the body was on paper, I started making the details, which was the structure of the face, neckline, the lips, the eyes, and the curving of the bust area. Then came the colors. I chose purple because I thought it would go well with the orange and I also just think that purple is a pretty color, which is why I merged light purple and dark purple onto the picture. I also chose the color blue, because I think blue is a fun color, and it is usually incorporated in all of my pictures. Doing this project I learned that when drawing a body, lightly draw the general shape first, and then start making curves, and edges, and neat patterns that would make the picture seem more real.

This assignment made me grow more as an artist, because before this project when drawing body’s I just drew what I saw, which would make my pictures look un-neat and juvenile, but I have learned to analyze whom drawing, and from which angle I am drawing from, then to go into the shape, the curves, and the edges etc. This technique will definitely help me in the future.
