Q4 Blog Post - Art

Posted by Cheyenne Pagan in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 1:20 am

Since this will be last blog post for Art... ever... I would like to take the chance to get a little sentimental. Art, has always been a passion of mine but not exactly in the way that it may be for other artists. I lack inspiration, and I've lacked it for quite awhile, so my focus as an artist became improvement and growth. I focused on becoming one of the best and making realistic, beautiful pieces that I could be proud of. Freshman year I took advantage of learning the basics i.e depth, shading, and lighting and began working on pieces that put those concepts to use. I started out with anime pieces. Sophomore year I continued to work on those anime pieces and my shading technique but I found myself getting a little more cartoony here and there. Over the summer, before Junior year, I found myself getting more serious about my art. I was looking up photorealism techniques and how to sketch portraits. I recall getting some of the most amazing advice from Ms.Hull and taking it to heart. I credit her for the outcome of my very first portrait. That summer is when I fell deeper in love with art and decided to start putting together a portfolio.

Throughout my high school career I never considered pursuing art professionally, although many people insisted I should or that it was a waste of my talent, but I always knew that I wanted to, at the least, minor in art in college. Knowing this, I chose to take art my senior year. Although the lesson plans (I felt) were slightly too cliche or easy, I did take the courses as a way to, if anything, exercise my abilities. Some were challenging (or took a lot longer than I was used to) simply for the fact that were not things that I was used to drawing and some were in color. I'm not particularly fond of using color, it's never been my strong suit, but I am fond of expanding my abilities and learned a few things from working with colored pencils.

This year I have created my most treasured works and sketches. I know that this is partially due to the years I have spent at SLA, surrounded by encouraging, interesting, inspiring, and creative people. I also know that I would not be as confident as I am in my art if it were not for Ms.Hull and her personal encouragement and advice throughout the years. She has always pushed me to not to only do my best but to exceed my own expectations. She has given me the courage, confidence, and skill that has brought me to the place that I now am with my art and I appreciate that beyond belief.

Hull, Thanks for introducing me to a whole new way of thinking, opening my mind, and helping me to unlock my talent. It means the world to me.

Below is a slideshow containing the pictures I have done since my freshman year (at least the ones I'm truly proud of). I created an album on my Facebook dedicated to the things that I have drawn (not all of the pictures are professionally/correctly taken, forgive me). These are in order from oldest to newest and the last one being the most recent painting as well as my most recent favorite.

I think by taking this class I made so much improvement. I know I am not good a drawing characters but when I compare my drawing to the first when I came in class, then I did better job. Because you learn at every stage in your life and I learn a lot during this class. The online tutorial guide me so much. It was so helpful for me as It teaches step by step. In short I did my best and I took benefit of taking this class. It helped me alot.

Starting art class I was thinking to myself how much I couldn't draw, but then Ms Hull told me that I could. She told me that everybody can do art but in different types of ways like drawing, writing, painting, etc. So I started out drawing little things like cartoons and I knew right there that that was my strength. Throughout the year I continued to draw cartoons and different stuff. Last Quarter I tried shading but that didn't work out to well but at least I tried. I loved this art class this year because I love Ms Hull and she is one of my favorite teachers at SLA. She was helpful and I could go to her about anything. For the 4th Quarter I was going to do a painting but that was kind of out of my little bubble so I just decided to do a couple more drawings and reflect on it. Other than that I had a great year in art.

Q3 Senior Art - Artist Statement

During Q3 my main focus was drawlings of the anatomy. I found drawling on drawspace.com of different body parts and thought it would be an interesting perspective to get the an inside look of the function of the human body. Many of my sketches show a dynamic aspect of details shadings and other artistic features to add on to my sketches. I set out to produce art about one subject so I can focus on one theme and work on one skill that I would like to improve.  I'm never without a sketchbook to hand so I am constantly drawing and sometimes the drawings are left in the sketchbook and other times they develop into more in-depth ideas and detailed images. Q3 like many seniors experience, I was packed with other obligations that came with the over powering work load of senior year making it difficult to put my full potential into producing more sketches that I would of enjoyed to make. Some of my other subject matter was about detailed human body parts and a comment on human body. And since I've always been a fan of the Anatomy  - a new strand of work seemed to link together to give me a great theme for this Q3

Q4  my focus is to produce and come up with a different theme to explain a certain piece of work - I want to produce art that can speak for itself and give a great message to its viewer. I want to end senior year by putting together all the skills I developed over the 4 years of having art and produce a great end of the year art piece.

Quarter 3 Artwork

Posted by Kimberly Parker in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 6:23 pm

During the third quarter of this school year, I was extremely busy with school work and the college process. I didn't have the time I wanted to really focus in on my art work. My goal of the third quarter was to improve my shading skills and making my drawings more realistic. I feel like I accomplished that in my Iris drawing. I'm very proud of that because I think it's one of the most elegant drawings Iv'e ever done. My goal for the fourth quarter is to spend more time on my art work inside and outside the classroom to improve further. This year so far has been overwhelming but I plan to have more time to focus in on art.

QMALIK 3Q ART

Posted by Qaswa Malik in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 4:13 pm

At first I was going to draw difficult pieces like portraits but then I changed my mind and decided to  to do some different than usual. I drew giraffe and some artistic designs which are hard to draw to draw because they require a lot of time and neatness. For next quarter I would be focusing on the same idea of drawing some designs like this.

I think this quarter I tried my best to work on not simple but hard drawings like insects. Normally I don't pay attention to such kind of drawings. But this time I took helped from online tutorial which help me a lot step by step. I don't consider myself as well at drawing but I think I need more practice. Because practice made perfect.

Q3 Art Portfolio CPagan

Link to Art portfolio Keynote

This quarter we were given the assignment to learn and draw from an online art course. In the beginning I wasn't too excited to do this because I felt like I wouldn't learn anything from the lessons, however, I learned small tips and techniques from doing each drawing. I definitely pushed my abilities by doing the pictures that were done in colored pencil. I'm the type of person that enjoys expanding my abilities across a multitude of different mediums, this assignment allowed me to do that. I have a hard time shading a picture without precise detail and I feel like the cross shading and the scribble technique that was used in a few of the lessons helped me loosen up with my attention to detail. Admittedly, the objects weren't exactly things that I would've personally chosen to draw and add to my portfolio but looking over all of the ones that I have done I find myself admiring the technique that I used more than the actual picture. If I was to do something like this over again I would probably force myself to step out of my comfort zone even more and do more pictures in color.
