We drew from a online tutorial that helped practice slightly more advanced techniques than in the previous quarters.   Again, I ended up drawing some things that I normally wouldn't have. In the end I'm glad that I was able to draw some of the things that were listed, like the Bee or the Human leg.  Normally when I thought of insects, I payed no attention to the level of detailing that they actually hold.  After the tutorial , I realized how complex they can be. The same thing with the leg.  I think that these two drawings specifically have helped me improve my shading and hatching techniques.

For this quarter, I really focused on shading and I think, I successfully drew my drawings which included shading to give objects their real shape and look. For next quarter I would be focusing on drawing hairs and fur to learn difficult levels of shading.

For this quarter I tried to do things a little different. I didn't want to solely focus on portraits like I usually do so I decided that I was going to dabble with different mediums. The first two pictures below are done in marker. I tried to sketch a few objects with marker and was not entirely satisfied with the results. I then tried to work with oil pastels which became increasingly difficult and frustrating because of the texture. Once admitting to myself that I am truly a pencil kind of artist I decided to sketch, however, I still wanted to stay away from the normal portraits so I decided to try different parts of the body and work on my textures. After feeling comfortable that I had made a few good pictures I was in a rut. After a spontaneous suggestion, I then drew cartoon versions of a few of my friends with color pencils. I greatly enjoyed doing this because I had not done some whimsical in awhile and all of my friends loved seeing my versions of them. Overall I think I had a successful second quarter and that I, for the most part, accomplished my goal of trying something different. 

This quarter I followed tutorials from draw space website. My aim for this quarter was to work on shedding and I did. I worked hard this time and I see some improvements as well. I am trying my best to improve more. 

During the second quarter of senior art class, I brushed up a lot on my drawing skills. I bought myself a brand new sketch book to start fresh and my goal was to only draw things in it that I knew I was going to be really proud of. Before this quarter, I was working a lot with charcoal so I wanted to switch it up a little and just use my pencil for a lot of the work that I did. I really wanted to improve my drawing skills so my drawings look a little more realistic. I think this really showed through with my daffodil drawing. That is the drawing I am most proud of doing this quarter. It took me about three class periods to complete because I was being very meticulous with the shading. I wanted it to look good enough to be a tattoo, that is what I kept envisioning. 

I also worked on a project at home. I was doing some research online and I came across a Crayola canvas. It really looked interesting and I wanted to try it out. I went to the craft store Michael's and picked up a new canvas and the biggest pack of Crayola crayons I could buy. I color organized the crayons the way I wanted them to be on the canvas. I then hot glued each crayon onto the canvas in a zig zag pattern. My next step was to take a hair dryer and put it on high and melt the tops of the crayons so the wax melted and dripped down the canvas. I was very happy with the way it turned out. I used my friend’s professional camera to take a picture of it. 

After that project, I went back into pencil drawings. I drew a bunch of pictures of my favorite cartoon characters. This included the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, Alice, and the Mad Hatter, all from the movie ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Then I drew Jake and Fin from ‘Adventure Time’, my favorite TV show. I also threw in one charcoal drawing I drew down Valley green and two flower pastel drawings. I really enjoyed art this quarter because I did a variety of different things and I got to brush up on my drawing skills and make a Crayola canvas. 

For the second quarter, I followed the drawing tutorials available on drawspace.com in order to practice shading, drawing fur on forms, and other important drawing lessons.  It gave me the chance to draw things that I wouldn't have normally attempted to sketch.
This was an opportunity to learn how to shade using hatching lines, which is something I didn't previously know how to do.  The shading would have gone a lot better if I used a wider range of   pencil mediums for the darks and lights.  I already had experience using natural shapes for faces and animals, which made some pictures a little easier to sketch than others.


Some of the drawings used scribbles as opposed to normal lines which provided a different affect for the final drawing.  The drawings were broken down into more steps than I would have originally thought, but it made things come together much easier later. The second picture is more of a doodle than anything else, it was not a part of the lessons on shading and shapes.

A sugar skull is a classic decoration for the Mexican holiday, la dia de la muerta, which is basically halloween. Traditionally, it is made out of sugar that has been formed into a skull shape and is decorated in a colorful and intricate pattern. 

While sketching on my own, my style tends to lean towards creepy. So when designing what to make my skull look like, I wanted to make it disturbing while realistic. 

The process of making the mask was not too complicated but it was certainly a new experience for me, starting with the casting of the mask. We had to make mold of our own faces using plaster sheets. After making the molds, we had to shape them by rounding off or cutting edges. In my own design, i decided it was not odd enough to begin with, so I attempted to cut out eyes, to give it another level. But then I continued with painting the mask, starting with a what base coat and then adding any and all details. Finishing touches of the mask included removing the strings hanging off of the edges and fixing any smudged paint. In the end, I feel I reached my goal and am very proud of the product.
