Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to help me gain a better understanding of computer coding.  I've always been interested in the process that goes into making things appear on a computer screen or within  a window on a program when playing video games.  I decided to try my hand at making a game with help from my four day a week computer science class.  Since I decided to use processing™ I gained more experience using a computer language based on Java.  Through the process of thinking of a game to make and then writing the code for it, I believe that I am more prepared for my intended major which may involve coding with a language like java.

Quarter 3 THenry

Posted by Taahir Henry in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 1:54 pm
We drew from a online tutorial that helped practice slightly more advanced techniques than in the previous quarters.   Again, I ended up drawing some things that I normally wouldn't have. In the end I'm glad that I was able to draw some of the things that were listed, like the Bee or the Human leg.  Normally when I thought of insects, I payed no attention to the level of detailing that they actually hold.  After the tutorial , I realized how complex they can be. The same thing with the leg.  I think that these two drawings specifically have helped me improve my shading and hatching techniques.

For the second quarter, I followed the drawing tutorials available on drawspace.com in order to practice shading, drawing fur on forms, and other important drawing lessons.  It gave me the chance to draw things that I wouldn't have normally attempted to sketch.
This was an opportunity to learn how to shade using hatching lines, which is something I didn't previously know how to do.  The shading would have gone a lot better if I used a wider range of   pencil mediums for the darks and lights.  I already had experience using natural shapes for faces and animals, which made some pictures a little easier to sketch than others.

Some of the drawings used scribbles as opposed to normal lines which provided a different affect for the final drawing.  The drawings were broken down into more steps than I would have originally thought, but it made things come together much easier later. The second picture is more of a doodle than anything else, it was not a part of the lessons on shading and shapes.

It goes along with the rule "You don't have to eat meat with every meal" I tried to find an exaggerated form of  food that people normally choose over healthier alternatives.  The alternative food was oatmeal and fruit being helped by a smiling woman.

Recipe
- Lettuce
- Carrot
- Walnuts
- Cucumber
- Eggplant
- Sweet soy sauce
- Pineapple
- Tomatoes

Analysis
We decided to make a salad, and it will be use mostly whole food. The only food with a direct label on it will be the soy sauce. We decided to use the rule “eat your colors” when coming up with this meal.  It will cost approximately 9 dollars to make.  Compared to fast foods, it will contain a lot less processed ingredients.   This meal could  be survived on,  it has ingredients from several of the major food groups that we depend on to stay alive.  The salad will contain vital proteins, vitamins, minerals, salt, and sugar.  There will be approximately 150-200 calories per serving. The meal will be enough to feed 5-6 people.    The lettuce came from florida.  We believe that the majority of the ingredients came from american farms, and we know that they were commercially grown.  In the long run, using mostly commercial ingredients for dishes like these may negatively affect the government. The fuel required to transport goods cross country / globally, usually involves emissions that are bad for air quality and the atmosphere.

Commercially grown carrots and Walnuts follow the same pros and cons of other commercially grown food; nuts specifically.

Lettuce:

Since lettuce is a vegetable, it is obviously first grown at a farm. Farmers produce crops to sell to big companies for packaging and distributing. There are a lot of steps to take for farmers to get their yield to the supermarket. From tending the soil to sowing the seeds and finally harvesting their crops, there are many steps to take to yield a successful harvest. As they stock up on vegetables, big companies either hire or make deals with them to produce their harvest at supermarkets for the general public. The vegetables go through a cleansing process to preserve its condition. Then, they are packaged up by machines or workers to sell.

Walnuts:

Similar to Lettuce, walnuts must first be grown (from trees) to harvest later on in August. By using complex tree shaking machines, they are able to harvest walnuts by the thousands in a matter of a few hours. Most walnuts go through a quick and easy processing phase. The husk is removed since it is not edible and the nuts are dehydrated to optimum 8% moisture level. This is also to protect and preserve the quality of the nuts. Finally, they are packaged and sent to whatever food retailer.

Sweet Soy Sauce:
Like many other condiments, sweet soy sauce is made ina  similar fashion. It has the same base as regular (salty) soy sauce, meaning that it has the same base ingredient: soy and wheat. Unlike soy sauce, it is not fermented and has various ingredients that I don't know since it's hard to find on the internet. This is because Indonesia is one of the only main countries that use this condiment. But, they are packaged in bottles and shipped out to various grocery stores.

Of course, our plans changed at the last minute as we did not want to involuntarily kill any of our classmates by serving a poisonous dish. So instead, here is the recipe that we used to make "Matt and Taahir's Energy Drank":

Matt and Taahir's Energy Drank:
- Romaine Lettuce (1 whole leaf)
- Carrots (2 whole)
- Pineapples (juice and fruit; about 1 cup)
- Orange Juice (2 cups)
- Pecans (1 cup)
- Whey Protein (2 tbsp)
- Sparkling Pear Beverage (1/2 cup)

Personal Reflection:

I think my role in the larger food system involves educating myself and the people around me to make healthier food choices.  I've learned to question the foods that are labeled to appear healthy.  Just because it says "100%" doesn't mean that there is all natural juice.  Some labels have vitman c or another vitamin in smaller print.   One thing I foiund particularly interesting is the fact that in America, the people of the lower economic statuses are more often obeses.  The opposite is true of people in other countries as well. Also, whole wheat bread may have bread that contains whole weat grains mixed in with the grains of regular bread. I also learned that corn of some type exists in almost everything we eat, solids and liquids.      I beleive the biggest problems with our food system is the way that crops like corn and soy have monopolized the food industry.  Instead of trying to find the root of problems and fixing them, they come up with more high tech was of temporarily dealing with the problems at hand.  There isn't much that we can do as individuals , but we would have to come together in the support of smaller companies and farmers that are invested in healthier foods and better treatment of animals.  I think that I could choose to eat less meat per day, and choose to eat less processed food , which in the long run would benefit my own health.

Taahir Henry Quarter 1: Sugar Skull

Posted by Taahir Henry in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 9:08 am

A sugar skull, is an artists rendering of a human skull. They are made from hardened sugar, the use of sugar art is something that was introduced to Mexico by Italian missionaries. The abundance of sugar in Mexico, meant that it was both cheap and easy to obtain, which allowed for the sugar art to catch on fast.  Sugar skulls have become an important part of observing and celebration of the Mexican holiday (El dia de los Muertos/The Day of the Dead) Sugar skulls tend to incorporate the use of floral patterns and/ or other intricate designs, as well as diamonds.

I came up with the design for my sugar skull from looking at sugar skulls that already existed.  I searched google to find several examples before starting to sketch what mine might look like. In the end however, my sugar skull became slightly more random, and less traditional. I included the the exposed teeth and jaw, with some of the outlined features, but almost everything else was football inspired. There is a diamond at the center of the skulls head, but other than that, the sugar skull that I created wasn't as customary as most sugar skulls are.

I think the most interesting part of the entire process was the creation of the mold. We used our own faces for this process.  By placing layers of wet plaster into the contours of our faces, we could create a replica of what we looked like, but with plaster. After the plaster dried and hardened, we removed them from our faces and proceeded to paint the designs we intended for the final product.

More information on the Day of the Dead and sugar skulls:

Media and the Election

Posted by Taahir Henry on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 1:06 pm
The media definitely influences the election in the sense that it has the power to negatively portray candidates.  A seemingly harmless sentence, can be taken out of context and replayed over and over until potential voters change their opinions on a specific candidate.  The  media is important for transferring valuable information to people who may or may not be too lazy to search for information themselves. As a part of America and therefore having the same rights as all Americans, the media should be allowed to broadcast, write, videotape, and upload whatever the see fit. In my opinion, it takes away from the overall meaning of the campaign when all they run is slander, instead of focusing on positive aspects of the point of views of candidates. There should be media stations, or news companies that focus on presenting factual information, without forcing opinions on potential listeners.

Patriot Act (should be altered)

Posted by Taahir Henry in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 1:30 pm

I believe that some provisions of the patriot act could just be removed all together, but it should still be an act that is upheld to provide a sense of safety.

I completely agree with the statement that "There is an inescapable tradeoff between security and liberty." In order to keep tabs on people or investigate, the government would require the ability to check up on, and closely watch persons of interest. At the same time, wire taps, financial  information, and  daily routines are things that the average person would rather keep private. I believe that it was okay for security to be balanced with liberty, but as attacks become more advanced and eminent , the government should adjust things to further ensure the general safety of its citizens, without being too drastic, like hidden cameras being placed in the homes of citizens.

The general conspiracy stereotypes of the government are supported with the way that the patriot act  can, and has been used by the government. It's a waste of money, resources, and just generally a waste of time if its mostly focused towards innocent citizens with less than positive views on some aspects of American Society. Many people would agree that the right to just take things (literally anything thats tangible) because they believe it to be suspicious or evidence without proper justification. The wire taps are bad enough, but the right to take things just because they want to is wrong.  Also, If government agents can actually order internet and library records on the spot, then there's something wrong. Without a real way of justifying their accusations, then they can just run through peoples private lives, without any regard for their rights and privacy laws.

If the patriot act is used for actually preventing terrorist attacks, and with good judgement, plus safeguards (like judge approval for wiretaps and other steps) then it should be left where it is standing, but theres still room for more consideration of the privacy and civil rights

Normally when I think of the government, I'm reminded of order and law.  Order is peace, and laws keep things in check.  Growing up, I have heard conspiracy theories and why people should never trust the government, but for the most part I've never seen or experienced any of these things in real life.  Coming into the movie, I already expected somethings to be exaggerated for the sake of keeping things interesting and moving at a good pace. In the opening of the movie, the government is painted in a much darker way than it is usually portrayed. It makes me feel as though the government can't be trusted with the better interest of it's people because of corruption. I thought it was interesting that there were government agents watching Will smith, and one of the mob members from the floor of an adjacent building. This could be a little annoying after a while, but it doesn't violate the rights of anyone, considering they are in public, and not making physical contact. The (NSA?) took it too far , however, when they decided to break into Will smiths home, and plant hidden cameras. Another thing I thought was both amazing and unnerving, was how easily and quickly they gained access to his financial reports, full name, adress, social security information, and the people he contacted. Seeing as how they government keeps track of this information anyway, I think its still wrong to go in and grab this information at the loose chance that there may be a connection. I think it would be acceptable for an individuals freedoms to be restricted, when they have known connections to terrorist acts, organizations, or have been convicted of more serious crimes. On the same hand, its kind of tough to combat violent attacks in today's world, considering the fact that people can decide to plan there own terrorist attacks after being persuaded to do so by actual terrorist organizations, or for no apparent reason at all. There needs to be some type balance that keeps people safe, without taking away their rights to privacy.

Censorship part 3

356 BC-
An early example of (religious) censorship.  Alexander the great was born in 356 BC, and went on to loot Macedon , and Burn the religious texts of the Zoroastrian, and also killing their religious leaders

1834-1835
An important case involving the news paper allowed for freedom of speech to eventually become an American right.  Between the years of 1834-1835, a man named John Peter Zenger printed negative information and claims about a royal leader, and was placed in jail as a result.  His lawyer made the argument that it shouldn’t be illegal if what he was saying was the truth, and the case was won.

1934:

The FCC is formed. They control specific communications through out America, and its territories. Mainly what we recognize is the censoring of music and videos  (Family Guy Clip)

1961: Initial idea for the internet is come up with.

1969: The internet is introduced

The internet poses a dynamic change to the way that  information is transferred , and as a result some aspects of it remain untouched or uncensored.

Present:

Although America allows freedom of speech, there are still many limitations set in place by the fcc governing the content that people are exposed too. An example of a country that limits much of what its people have access to is China. They have been known to block entire websites (like FaceBook)

Spanish stereotypes

Posted by Taahir Henry in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 5:56 am

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187427-c69822/Spain:Some.Truths.About.Spanish.Stereotypes.html

Many of the general stereotypes that are applied to specific group of people are far from being the truth.  Others may have some ties to the past which may lead to the ideas being perpetuated.  I decided to pick a spanish speaking country in which many stereotypes are displayed in movies.  Americans are generally displayed as a people who are lazy and incompetent.  The people of Spain are also displayed as being lazy and love to party.  While it can be said that many spanish love to party and part take in the consumption of alcohol, there economic status disproves the "lazy" portion of the stereotype.  Also, they are sometimes grouped into the category of being rich and snooty.  While some may have the money to flaunt and poor attitudes as well, this cannot be said for an entire country as a whole.  It is true that Spain has become one of the more expensive countries to visit , and that they ship quality products, which has helped them become one of the highest rated  gross domestic products.

The bull fighting that was once at the heart of Spanish culture, is losing its importance among the people of Spain.  Its easy to take something an exaggerate , for films and other media , which leads to more misrepresentation.  Many of the people of Spain believe that the bull fights are bad, and that they really shouldn't be continued. In some areas, bull fighting is actually prohibited.

My group was assigned the School District Funding topic. Initially we weren't entirely sure what we were going to research/ present, but for the most part we had a rough idea for what we were going to use. We soon found out that the more difficult portion of the project would be choosing the most effective way to present our campaign and put it into action. In my mind it made sense to draw up some posters and maybe write about the state of public school funding in Philadelphia.  After I learned that we had to take action and implement our campaign in a real life, I knew that my original thoughts wouldn't be very successful.  It would have required that I made copies and handed them out/ posted them in places around the city.  The word may have spread, but there would have been no quantitative way to check the success in that portion of the campaign. It was suggested that we should do a website, and the easiest way to do that was through weebly, a website that many people used for NHD.  With the use of a weebly, we could separate our campaign into different categories, for various group members and check the amount of visits the site gets.  Heather and I were responsible for the poster and artistic part of the campaign. I decided to draw a political style cartoon that shows money being pumped from a large vat (Government Funds) to required services.  The only two things that are clearly being fed in the picture are the school district and the correctional system. The man standing in the picture is Tom Corbett, and he's saying, "Seems right to me".  This is in reference to the school district  budget cuts that he is proposing for Pennsylvania. If you look at the tube connecting the school district to government funds, you notice that it is damaged, representing a more subtle way of saying that the school district is lacking the proper funding that it should be receiving.

My project was a short booklet about me.   I like the fact that I was allowed to draw for this project.  I might have colored it like I originally planned, if I did the project over.  The booklet is three pages showing me growing from a kid to the present, and then what I may look like 10 years from now.  I drew several examples of the things I wrote about.

T-Henry Q4 art

Posted by Taahir Henry in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 10:36 pm
This was an interesting and frustrating quarter for me. We had to make a how-to sculpture,   and draw something repeatedly, which didn't turn out as well I wanted it to be.  We had to find a how-to sculpture and make it. I decided to make a jet out of k'nex pieces after seeing a how to on the internet. I liked this the most out of the things we did for the last quarter.  We also had to take a lot of pictures and then edit them using some form of picture editor like and app or photoshop.  We were required to replicate a famous piece of art.  The easy part was sketching, I felt confident that everything was somewhat accurate.  When It came time to add details, I started to realize that color pencil may not have been the best choice.  I chose to draw the Scream.  Drawing a bike is something that I have never tried to do before in an art class.  The line drawing seemed simple enough, but a lot of detail was needed for a final product that looked good.  The smaller drawings I did were okay, but when I had to do it on a larger scale it came out horrible.  I tried drawing it over several times, but just decided to finish  because it didn't get much better.  Drawing in negative space is something that I've never done at all, which may have been why I had trouble drawing the bike in negative space.

THenry 3rd Quarter

Posted by Taahir Henry in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 6:36 am
The drawings that I had to do for the third quarter were more difficult when I had to do them on  a larger scale.  I am used to drawing on paper that is 8x11 or smaller.  The drawings that I like best are the one of my hand and the still life.  I like the drawing of my hand because I felt more in control while I was drawing it, and it was on a scale that I was used to.  The still life drawing was also something that I was more familiar with. I've done still life's in other art classes, so I knew what to expect as far as perspective and scale.  The things that gave me the most trouble were working with charcoal and the 24x36 drawings.  Charcoal is much messier than pencil, and it is harder to erase.  Even when I did get some of it erased there were marks left on the paper.  The fact that it didn't erase as cleanly as pencil became frustrating.  I didn't mind doing a drawing a week, especially since I did something similar during the second quarter.

These are My Drawings:

Self Portrait(8x11)

This project required me to explain my daily routine using Spanish.  I had to write down steps for each part of my day and then combine them with audio, video, and some pictures.

I learned how to say my daily routine in Spanish. I feel like my final product is good, but it could have went more smoothly. If I could do it all over again I would make it all video instead of a mixture of video and pictures. I enjoyed this project because it was interesting turning every that was on paper into a video.

Inconsistency

Gold English

January 13 2011

“I thought you was dumb at first.” said my friend

“Why you say dat?” I asked.

“Cuz, you just big and you talk like everybody else.”

“So everybody dumb?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Ard, but you still don’t make any sense.”

“Its cuz of the fact that you just sound kind of slow when you talk.”

“How?”

“Cuz, you just sound slow sometimes.”

“Maybe I’m thinking about what I’m gonn say.”

“Or you just sound dumb.”

“Ard, but then why do you think I’m smart.”

“Cuz the way you talk to us and the way you talk to teachers not the    same”

“Huh?”

“When you talk to us you don’t talk the same, like when you talk to a teacher you use the whole word and your voice change”

“Ard”.  I didn’t really know what he meant because I never heard anything like that before.  How could I sound dumb one minute, and then sound intelligent the next?

I noticed that I actually did change my tone and fully pronounced my words when I spoke to teachers.  He was right, but how could I have never recognized this myself?  I started to notice that I was not the only one who changed their voice and speech based on who they were talking to.  My mother, aunt, and grandmother did the same thing.  I must have picked up the habit from hearing them.  They used a more relaxed natural tone when they were talking to someone that they knew personally.  The opposite occurred when they were trying to be professional.   I first noticed this when my mom would call the bank to get account information or if she called to get her car serviced.   It only happened in situations where they wanted to be professional and taken seriously.  Being taken seriously is important if you need to get things done.

According to James Baldwin, “It goes without, then that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power.”  This shows that language is a vital ingredient for anyone who wants to be taken seriously and without it you wouldn’t get anywhere.   This quote applies to what I became accustomed to doing.   I used proper English and grammar whenever possible when I spoke to adults, especially teachers.  I reverted to what I felt was more natural when I was talking to my peers and family members.

Slang and broken English is accepted and expected when I talked to some; however the contrary was expected when talking to others.  The use of slang and improper grammar can lead people to believe that you’re uneducated.  The use of proper grammar may lead some to believe that you think you are superior to them.  “Code switching” was just something I became accustomed to without realizing until it was pointed out.

I would have been mocked by my peers for being proper, but would have been perceived as incompetent by adults and teachers for using slang.  “Code switching” is something that made things a lot more convenient, because I could choose the appropriate time to speak a certain way.  The way I spoke was as a result of growing up around people who usually didn’t use proper English, except in situations where they thought it was necessary.   I sort of had an at home voice and a voice that I used for those I didn’t know so well.  Richard Rodriguez said, “They regarded the people at work, the faces in crowds, as very distant from us they were the others, los gringos.”  The people in the essay saw themselves as being completely different from “Los Gringos” because they spoke a different language, which caused them to feel separate.  This is similar to how the members of my family and I felt about people who spoke differently than we did.  I know this is true because my family tends to use “business like” voices when they are at work and they would speak normally anywhere else.  Language can show who you are, and your level of education, which is important.

Taahir Henry Quarter 2

Posted by Taahir Henry in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 11:22 pm
I enjoyed the second quarter, because there was more freedom in what could be done. I decided to do some sketches, because its just what I was more comfortable with.  I used a sketch book and a couple of pencils. I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do at first, so I just used the first things I saw and sketched them. I started off with some that were simpler and moved on to ones with more detail. Before this project, I hadn't sketched anything in a long time.  As I started to get used to sketching again, things became easier.  One thing that was challenging for me was keeping things proportional, especially ears and eyes.  The last sketch I made is a self portrait from a side view.

I chose to sketch Murdoc, 2-D, and Noodle from the Gorillaz. I left out the fourth member, and did a drawing of myself instead. The album artwork is what lead me to make the self portrait, even though I had originally intended on drawing the fourth member (Russel). I was in the process of drawing Russel when the sketch started to remind me of myself so I decided to turn it into a self portrait.

Taahir Henry 1st marking period.

I found it interesting that we needed to use recycled materials for our first quarter project.  It is unlike anything I have ever been assigned, in art class or otherwise. I like the idea of doing something different for art, but trying to stick to recycled materials made things a little more difficult for me. At first I wasn't sure what I was going to do but I realized that I had a huge pile of bottles that was just growing day in and day out, and I decided then that I wanted to do something involving recycling plastic bottles.

First I decided to build a small scale raft with several bottles, some tape, card board, a plastic bag, and some pencils. This idea didn't translate very well when I tried to bring it into physical form. In the process of building the raft I realized what I wanted to do, and it didn't involve boats of any form. I decided to make a small comic strip showing the steps that some recycled materialS go through before they are redistributed. I used bits of plastic bottles and a few caps to cover the pictures somewhat. I usually stick to drawing or sculptures. I don't feel very confident when painting, so I chose to stick with something that I felt more comfortable with.
