356 BC-
An early example of (religious) censorship.  Alexander the great was born in 356 BC, and went on to loot Macedon , and Burn the religious texts of the Zoroastrian, and also killing their religious leaders

1834-1835
An important case involving the news paper allowed for freedom of speech to eventually become an American right.  Between the years of 1834-1835, a man named John Peter Zenger printed negative information and claims about a royal leader, and was placed in jail as a result.  His lawyer made the argument that it shouldn’t be illegal if what he was saying was the truth, and the case was won.

1934:

The FCC is formed. They control specific communications through out America, and its territories. Mainly what we recognize is the censoring of music and videos  (Family Guy Clip)

1961: Initial idea for the internet is come up with.

1969: The internet is introduced

The internet poses a dynamic change to the way that  information is transferred , and as a result some aspects of it remain untouched or uncensored.

Present:

Although America allows freedom of speech, there are still many limitations set in place by the fcc governing the content that people are exposed too. An example of a country that limits much of what its people have access to is China. They have been known to block entire websites (like FaceBook)

Though some would say this is against freedom of speech, do you think that some censorship is necessary? Would you say that censorship has been a thing in the past in some media and the internet?

@Andrew 1. Some books and media that were censored in years past may have been released unedited. For the most part, the things that were taken out from these books are more or less lost. It's easier to study the people who censored the media and why they did it.

  1. We can't know exactly what was taken out of these pieces of media because there is no record of it. Censors of the early 20th century did not keep a record, and modern American censors cause filmmakers to take out certain parts of their film. Some filmmakers choose to release "uncut/unrated" editions of their movies (see ANY sex comedy of the last 10 years).

@Heather 1. Freedom of speech is the idea that a person can say whatever they want without fear of any action being taken against them for it. There are no American laws against portraying anything in films, at least not since the 1930's or so, but modern censors like the MPAA are responsible for rating movies based on their content and in some cases prohibiting a certain audience from seeing them.

  1. The way the modern American censorship system works is that a company such as the MPAA rates upcoming films and determines whether or not they are appropriate for a certain audience. Filmmakers can choose to not have their films rated, but this is often not a favorable option, since almost all mainstream films use this system and many movie theaters do not show unrated movies. Modern censorship is less "strict" than it used to be in the sense that censors do not require filmmakers to completely remove parts of their films, but rather "encourage" them to tone down the explicit content.
