Arlana Brown Capstone

Posted by Arlana Brown in Capstone - Sanchez on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 1:42 pm
Name: Arlana Brown

Mentor:Rosalind Echols

Topic Summary;

The goal of this project is to implement a successful exercise program at a facility.

Project Abstract:

The reason why I choose to do this project is because I wanted it to tie into something I want to do in the future. I want to be a nurse and it would help if I had some one else then my self to watch closely over and to make sure they were doing the right thing. I did exactly that in this project. I worked with my church to make this possible. I was able to conduct this project with the help of 12 people total. They worked hard and allowed me to document this project by taking pictures. As a result I will be able to show my mentor and my classmates what my capstone turned out to be.

Blog Post #5-Spain's Language

Posted by Arlana Brown in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 9:03 am
For this final blog post I wanted to focus on Spain's Language. When I started my research I found a lot of interesting things. Here are my findings:

If you think that Spanish and Castilian are Spain official language your only partially right. Because Spain has actually three official languages(Euskara, Catalan, Galician) which are not only used in Spain. Euskara is the most unusual language in Spain and only about 600,000 speak Euskara. Catalan is not only spoken in Spain but in Andorra(national language) and about 4 million people use it as their first language. Galician is really similar to Portuguese. To understand Galician about 85% people understand it and 3 million of 4 million speak it in Spain.

Euskara:

Hello(Kaixo)
Thank You(Eskerrik Asko)
Yes(Bai)
No(Ez)
House(Etxe)
Catalan:
Yes(Sí)
Please(Si us plau)
Llengo(language)
Midnight(Mitjanit)

Galician:

Egg(ovo)

No(nom)
Hello(ola)

Blog Post 4-Education System in PR

Posted by Arlana Brown in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 9:38 am
I wanted to know about Education system in Puerto Rico and how it differs from the United States. I had someone to talk to but when I started to talk to them they seemed uncomfortable and quickly ended our conversation. But this is what I found out....

The education system has 3 main levels Primary(elementary school),Secondary(intermediate and high school) and higher levels.Primary is grades 1-6 and High School is 7-12. The constitution of Puerto Rico is set up that everyone has the right to learn on the island and public without cost. The largest in Puerto Rico private college system is Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez which is in control of the Metropolitan University.

How To Break Up With Your Novio/Novia...

There are many ways to break up with people. There are also many reasons why. Through my research I found out a couple of ways to say it if you want to learn there down below…

Corté con mi novia/novio.

Rompí con mi novia/novio.

Lo dejé con mi novia/novio.

Mi novia/novio y yo lo dejamos.

To Break Up-Separarse

To Break Up-Terminar

To Break Up-Hacerse Pedazos

As you can see there are many ways to let someone down easy. :)

Blog Post 2-Dance Culture In Puerto Rico

Posted by Arlana Brown in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 9:23 am
I decided to stay with my same question...Dance Culture in different parts of the world. I believe that my conversation will be smooth and they will jump right in about dance culture. I know that a lot of Spanish speaking countries are very influenced by the arts.

Name:Prisilla Nieves from Puerto Rico

Arlana:Hola!

Prisilla:Hola! Como estas?

Arlana:Bien y tu?

Prisilla:Bien

Arlana:Donde eres?

Prisilla:De nada.

Reflection:
I learned that my partner believes her culture for dance is traditional. They really appreciate salsa and that is like a very famous dance in Puerto Rico.I am proud I have gotten a first hand experience from someone who has lived in Puerto Rico and seen these type of traditions going on. I will ask more follow up questions.

Arlana:Hola!

Martha:Hola!

Arlana:Como estas?

Martha:Bien y tu?

Arlana:Bien tambien!

A mi me gusta mas bailar bachata y merengue.

Arlana Brown Environmental Impact

Posted by Arlana Brown in Physics - Echols on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 8:36 am

Environmental Impact

"Both natural processes and human activities are capable of changing the environment."-Study Island

Slow Changes to the environment include:

•Changing of the seasons

•Ecological succession

Rapid Changes to the environment include:

•Hurricanes

•Volcanic Eruptions

•Asteroid Impacts

Humans contribute to the environment in many ways, especially if they are treating the environment bad.

•Habitat destruction

•Fossil fuels burning

•Genetically engineering organisms

•Pollution

•Greenhouse Gases

So we are going to focus on ecological succession and it's impact on the environment. Ecological succession is basically a process that a community undergoes and has a predictable change. Think of "I Am Legend" when you see the deers running around and trees growing in the streets. Basically that street has turned into a "forest" that's ecological succession.Example below:

Over time as you can in 1840 it started out as a pond but ended up being a forest.  In 1870 you can that some of the plants are starting to get a little bigger and that the fish are still present. In 1900 algae are starting to fill up the pond. 1930 the pond is almost covered now with a tree on the side and algae almost filling the whole thing. In the last two years the trees are more present with the pond covered with algae and dirt.

Questions to think about:

What is ecological succession?

What is primary ecological succession?

Listed below is pictures of ecological succession which one shows it the most?

Quarter 3 Benchmark

This project overall was a great opportunity to get very influential message across. For this project I was chosen to be in a group dealing with the topic of Neighborhood High Schools. At first I really didn’t know how to tackle this topic but with the help of my group members I was able to accomplish it. We all realized that we had different plans for the future of our campaign, but we all got together and put our creative minds together and this is our product: MARCH FOR EDUCATION!

My first option to present this campaign was to have a video with us stating facts and appealing to youth. The video obviously did not work out but we choose something else. Before we could do anything we needed a motto or slogan. Since our topic was Neighborhood Schools we needed something about education. We each agreed on the motto “It’s either now or never, your education lasts forever.” The motto I believe sets us off very well for a successful campaign. The motto is appealing and gets our point across.

We came in to difficulty with a medium for our project. We choose a Google site but realized it wasn’t too appealing and decided to change it. We put all of our information on webs.com and our campaign came to life.

I was in charge of the posters and getting the message across. I choose to use a schoolhouse with a red background because red usually sticks out and gets the message across. With our website we have a picture and a message stating what we are about. I believe the biggest problem was actually figuring out how we would impact the community and get this word out. Saying that we do not go to a neighborhood high school so how would we be able to get this message across? We took a pledge to spread this as best as we could. We are putting it on social media and posting it around our neighborhoods. Our campaign is still growing and we will be near our goal educating everyone.

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why?
The assignment was to either make an radio show or tv show about how to resolve problems they are having in their relationship. My group decided to do a radio show because we wanted to do something different.

What did you learn from doing this project?  I learned different shortcuts of how to pronounce things. I also learned a lot more spanish.

How do you feel about your final product?I feel really good about the finish product. I know we all kept recording over and over so I know it will be good.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same? I would change it to video. Because we have a lot of funny lines so I think they are meant to see.

Self Confidence

“What’s your name?” she says.

“Arlana Brown I am here for an interview. I am supposed to meet with Mr. Jackson,” I state.

“Have a seat Mr. Jackson will be with you in a while. While you wait can I ask a question?” she says.

“Yes you may” I reply.

“What school do you go to? Most youth come in here with their pants down, cussing, and just everything we don’t need here?” she stammers.

“Thank you I take that as a compliment and I go to Science Leadership Academy on 22nd and Arch Streets” I reply.

“Oh that really good school that just opened. I heard about them before my niece is supposed to go there. Well thanks for answering my question and nice talking to you. Actually Mr. Jackson is waiting for you. Sorry to keep you waiting. And by the way, off the record I think you will get the job. Good luck!” she says happily.

“Thanks Miss.”, I say confused.

“Mrs. Williams”, she replies.

“Thanks Mrs. Williams you have a good day” I reply.

I go and take a seat and remember what she says. It brightened up my day with the compliment she gave me. Most people say I am hyper and that I usually mispronounce my words. I guess I talk differently around my friends and then when it is business. It’s a time and a place for everything. It was my time to go in for the job and of course I am looking fresh. I have fresh dress clothes on and now time to switch to business mode. I leave street talk behind when I walk through his door. This is the start to my whole life.

We start the interview. He came to a decision I was still in school and the job was far to travel to everyday. He said it wasn’t that I wasn’t capable and wasn’t qualified, it was that the time of my school and the job would interfere. He told me to come see him when I turn 18 and he would have a position ready for me. Walking away that day didn’t make me see that things went bad for me, it actually went good. I was happy that he told me that because I knew for myself that I was capable of talking to people in higher places than they and I thought I was highly educated for my age. I went back to Mrs. Williams and explained what happened and she exclaimed with “What! If I was in there I would hire you, I would pick you up everyday so you could have this job. Well he is obviously blind to not hire you. But one day he will remember and will be very upset to see you on Oprah. You’re a talented and intelligent young women and I wish you the best”.

I was so shocked she said this that I flew over and gave her a hug and told her “thank you”. In How To Tame A Wild Tongue, Glona Anzaldía writes, “Ethnic identity is twin to linguistic identity-I am my language”. Your language is the same as your skin, as is your personality. Your language represents you. She also writes that, “Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself”. I have had experiences when people would tell me “you say this wrong” and I would get mad and feel I hate the way I talk, until one day. I had to learn that no matter what you speak or how you speak, you are who you are. Nothing can change that not even your language. From that day I had the self-determination that I could do anything no matter what! I learned people that knew me for 5 minutes gave me more credit then people who knew me for a lifetime. Just the way you look can determine the language you speak. It’s your choice to live by the stereotype.
