Since I am planning on pursuing a career in architecture I decided to go down the path of building design for my Capstone. A teacher suggested designing the “New SLA” for my project. I found my mentor, who lives a few houses over, through my father. Together, my mentor and I worked on different assignments that when put together makes an official building proposal that could be given to a client. The entire project consists of site plans, zoning codes, building precedents, space diagrams, material research, floor plans and finally a digital 3 Dimensional concept of the completed school.

I ran a shoe drive here at SLA. The people who actually hosted the shoe drive was Teenshop Incorporated which is an organization for girls with goals that I am actually apart of. The event “Shoes for Life” was held on Saturday May 19th 2012 at (_____) where we actually gave the shoes away. My reasoning for choosing this project is mostly because the poverty rate is growing here in Philadelphia meaning that whatever income people do get, more than likely, it is spent on paying bills and buying food, the essential needs.  That leaves less money for people to pay for other things such as shoes. Besides poverty, personally, I enjoy giving and catering to those who are in great need and this project gave me the opportunity to do so.

Hello Science Leadership Academy Family,

My name is Alexis Beckton and my capstone was S.L.A’s first prom king and queen. When I designed my project I thought it would be interesting to observe what would happen if traditional high school practices such as prom king and queen were conducted in a setting like S.L.A.  I had my initially predictions of how my project would go and I assumed everyone would rally behind the idea of trying something new but as my project progressed I formed new opinions.

Anna Roman, Shelby Harcher, Markia Johnson, and Elisa Hyder are coming together this year to form The Good Friends. The Good Friends is a TV show pointed at SLA events and world events for our Capstone Project. The show will air once a week at the most. At least 3 of us will be on screen talking with possibly a guest at all times. The topics will vary week by week depending on the season and anything interesting going on at the time. Our first episode will be out in the upcoming weeks and will be posted on SLA's homepage (SLATE).
