Prom Court 2012

Posted by Alexis Beckton in Capstone - Best on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 12:50 pm
Hello Science Leadership Academy Family,

My name is Alexis Beckton and my capstone was S.L.A’s first prom king and queen. When I designed my project I thought it would be interesting to observe what would happen if traditional high school practices such as prom king and queen were conducted in a setting like S.L.A.  I had my initially predictions of how my project would go and I assumed everyone would rally behind the idea of trying something new but as my project progressed I formed new opinions.

In the end I'm very proud of my capstone and what I have learned as a result of my process. For more information check out my capstone presentation on Monday June 4th, 2012 in room 313 at 1:40 pm.

Blog Post #5

(Blog Post 3)

The status of my issue isn't fully clear but it doesn't seem that it's on the top of the to-do list. On the city council website there are either broken links or misdirected pages to say who's working on what topics and what the facts are.

For my particular topic the main supporters or allies would be the non-profit organizations that either are in support of shelters or provide the supplies for the shelters. These people care and they are amazing advocates but more importantly they have invested in the well being of the homeless and that makes this topic something they can't just wake up one morning and walk away from like a politician can. Surprisingly my representative Darrell L. Clarke is on the board for ethics, safety and housing and homeless. However in my district alone I witness countless amounts of people everyday sleeping on the sidewalk.

Broken down by congressional districts, the Philadelphia area ranks in the top 2 highest homeless population percentages.

Representative Robert Brady & Chaka Fattah, are responsible for these districts and if this information was more widely know I think the representatives would feel a bigger need for change. I think the people to be influenced are the people who dont' realize these things are going on.

Quarter Two: Artist Journal

Self Portrait & Abstract Sketch and Painting

This quarter my favorite project was the Self portrait sketch. From this project I learned alot about the shapes and lines on my face, whereas before I've never had a reason to look at myself so closely. I think this project is great for anyone in the art class because it makes you feel good about the way you look and at the same time learn the techniques to make a portrait.

Emotion Art

This piece was fun to complete as well. When I was first given the project I didn't even know what emotion art was but once I researched and looked at different artists work I knew exactly what I wanted to create. The sketch is the first picture and the second is the black canvas. The last picture shows my work when it was almost completed.

The "V" Word: A fight to protect women's bodies

Posted by Alexis Beckton in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 8:00 pm
Alaya White & Alexis Beckton

  • Why did you choose this topic?
I choose this topic because I think women's rights are often looked past and in the time of elections people get very uptight about pro-life and pro-choice but don't take into consideration the women's feelings.

  • What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?
I think the challenging part was deciding how to convey what we wanted to say and finding the most effective way to do it.

  • Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
The most interesting fact that we investigated was the fact that in 2002 a study about sexual behaviors in children showed that girls are having sex as young as 12.

  • How could this project be improved?
We could have put movie examples and real world examples.
  • Where did you run into trouble with the project?
We ran into the most trouble submitting the project because our video wasn't the right type of file and converting the project took alot longer than we had expected.

  • What went well with this project?
The amount of participation we received from students was surprising. I usually try not to count on people willingly working on a video because of time constraints or people just not volunteering but this time was completely different.

  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?
I think we would have really used the last day to super edit and just tighten the project up more.

  • What did you learn?
That people really do want to have health education !!!

Alexis Beckton: Lobbying Blog Post 4

Blog Post Four

  • Dominate something.
The way I decided to communicate with my representative about my lobbying topic was to call the office at the same time everyday. I thought that by being consistent with how I handled my situation they would know that I was serious about this issue and that sooner or later they would have to address me.

Screen Shot 2011-12-21 at 12.13.56 PM

    • Do a few things well
They never called back and very seldom did they even answer the phone. I was upset and almost outraged at the fact the office of the man that was elected to represent my interest was never available to actually listen to my needs. I was persistent in calling but I started to vary the times. I didn't want to change my strategy because it was a good one it just wasn't as effective as I would've hoped.

    • Make the strategy personal.
The strategy became very personal as I felt my voice wasn't being heard. I think now I will change my strategy looking back because there was no progress with calling. Now I will draft one letter addressed to the representative and ask that every senior in the school email it to him. Or invite him to the school so that we could have a group discussion on how to move forward.

Learner's Permit, License & Registration

Posted by Alexis Beckton in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:36 am
LearnerSPermitLearnerSPermit
For the bureaucracy project we had to pair up and choose a task. The overal driving process wasn't difficult however it took a lot of research to understand some of the forms and to really be able to identify what has to come before what in the process. In my partnership first we assigned the roles for each other and then we both started looking for paperwork. I created the flowcharts while my partner filled out the forms and went back and made suggestions so that I could edit. The paperwork is very straightforward once I understood the process in which they needed to be signed and also what the different abbreviations for forms were.
If I could change anything I would change the registration process because even though it's very simple finding the papers making sure you have them all is the difficult part.

Alexis Beckton Quarter 1 Benchmark

Pasta Salad Recipe:

1 Can of Diced Tomatoes

¾ Bottle of Fat Free Italian Dressing

A Pinch of Salad Supreme McCormick Seasoning

Hodgson Mill 100% Wheat Noodles

A Teaspoon of Butter

Instructions:

Boil a pot of water and place the teaspoon of butter in the boiling water. This is also the time where you add your salt and pepper (optional).

Break the uncooked noodles in half and place them in the pot.

After 5-8 minutes strain the water out of the pot so the noodles don’t overcook in the bowl.

Open the can of diced tomatoes and empty the can in the bowl.

Pour ¾ of the Italian dressing into the bowl and add the pinch of seasoning.

Enjoy !!!

Analysis:

For my recipe I mostly used foods that weren’t processed. For the healthier ingredients I used wheat noodles, a natural spread for my butter and McCormick seasoning and the processed foods were the diced tomatoes and the Italian dressing.  My complete recipe was around 550 calories in total. I believe that per serving size this dish was not unhealthy but it isn’t something I would recommend people eat everyday. If this were a daily meal you would probably have high blood pressure from all the sodium.

Everything was made in America but most of the things weren’t locally grown. I think out of all my foods either the canned diced tomatoes or the salad dressing traveled the farthest. But there isn’t a very effective way to figure out how far everything came from.  This meal costs around $8 dollars because I purchased everything from fresh grocers where things are a little more expensive than at a store like Wal-Mart or Shop Rite. Even with that being said I still think this meal is cheaper than fast food because it can be refrigerated and because of the amount that was made it will also last longer than a $5 burger from a fast food place.

If I were to grow the tomatoes myself as apposed to purchasing them to me the biggest differences would actually be that they weren’t store bought and also that there would . I don’t think the impact on the community would even be that great because there are local farms that grow tomatoes. Another major difference I’m seeing is that I don’t actually know how to grow tomatoes or keep the bug and insects away form them like an actual farm would so overall I think it’s a healthier decision to farm.

Personal Reflection:

In this quarter we have talked about food for the last three weeks and I can honestly say I’m shocked. I always knew the food industry and the things we eat aren’t exactly up to par and periodical but after re-watching the movie Food Inc. I don’t really know what to think. In the movie there was a chapter about cleaning beef. This chapter was confusing to me. This piece talks about how beef needs to be cleaned before serving because it’s harmful but at the same time what they use to clean the food is just as harmful.

This unit has taught me that eating healthy is more than just a life style it’s a job. You need to know what you eat, where it comes form and the truth about how it’s made. I always thought people that lived a healthy eating lifestyle took it too serious, but after hearing the little boy Kevin’s story I understand. If you don’t watch out for your food no one else will even when it’s his or her job to. Also I never thought it was worth spending the money but I know now that if you don’t pay for it now you’ll pay later in the medical expenses and everything else. I feel that I’ve learned a lot, and have shaped the view eating healthy.

Q1 Benchmark: Sexting Legislation

Posted by Alexis Beckton in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 11:25 pm

Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act & Modern Day Sexting on Prezi

The additions to this law create a whole new way of life for most teens in  America. While they may not think sexting influences their future children as young as 16 years of age are being charged with child pornography crimes and are being registered as sexual offenders. Because sexting is so prevalent in teen culture these laws can only get firmer before they lighten up.

Reflection

  • Explain your decision making for choosing the bill.
I choose this bill because I realized many of teens "sext" but don't think that their are consequences that can directly effect them. I think in this day and age everything has s much to do with technology it's almost the norm. Sex is everywhere and it's also children's laptops and cellphones, ipads and ipods. I choose this bill because i wanted to raise awareness.

  • Why did you choose the particular presentation format?
I used the a prezi because in many of the cases where children and young adults are getting arrested for this crime, their story is getting told bit by bit on national television. I think the flow of a prezi has the same feel that an action news segment would or any other top news story.

  • What challenges did you overcome in completing the project?
The biggest challenge was getting real and factual information about this topic. When I choose the Adam Walsh Act and how it related sexting I expected there to be tons of information ready to be shared, but I was wrong. It is very black and white and in many cases places are trying to revise the law or find a way to adopt something like it, but not actually enforce it.

  • How would you do the project differently if you had to do it over again?
If I had to do this project over again I think I would make a video presentation instead of a prezi, I think the message would have been better portrayed if I submitted a video.

  • What did the research and investigation tell you about the creation process... from idea to bill to law?
This benchmark taught me that when people really want to pass a bill they will do everything in their power to get it done. My bill was a mixture of two bills and was passed rather fast compared to other bills. I also learned that if bills aren't worded right down to a small detail it can impact so many lives in situations people would never think they would be arrested for.

  • Was the process easier or harder than you imagined based on your particular bill/law research?
The process was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be. After my research I had a clear understanding and the ideas of how to present just came to me.

This was my first quarter as an art student since freshman year. It was almost a culture shock to me to remember certain things about the class policies and the general feeling you get when you walk into Mrs. Hull's classroom. The first assignment we had to draw a six foot figure, being that I'm only five feet tall it seemed like it would be a huge challenge but it wasn't as hard as I talked myself into thinking it would be. We used pastels and charcoal to create the drawings. I didn't do a clear object drawing because I was working on the logo for my capstone which is shown above.

Lobbying #2: Lobbying: Advocating For Homeless Youth In Philadelphia

5th District Council Representative DARRELL L.CLARKE

Darrell-L_-Clarke

Representative Darrell L. Clarke is a member of the ethics and housing/

homeless committees and also is and advocate for public safety in Philadelphia.

 Current Work:

Representative Darrel Clarke was also responsible to advocating for the reconstruction of the Girard avenue and Spring Garden street stops along the Broad street line. Representative Clarke knew that those stations were anywhere from 75-80 years old and that they no longer met the Americans with Disabilities Guidelines. Using the money from the Federal American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, he has done close to 36.7 million dollars in work.

Although many people know him for changing the subway stops Representative Darrell Clarke is mostly know for his dispute with the Boy Scouts of America over their anti-discrimination policy. When the representative heard that the Boy Scouts weren't allowing homosexual males to be scout leaders he immediately started his plan to action. Representative Darrell Clarke was quoted saying “At the end of the day, you can not be in a city-owned facility being subsidized by the taxpayers and not have language in your lease that talks about nondiscrimination,”  “Negotiations are over.” The Boy Scouts had been living in their building since 1928 but now are facing eviction if they don't not pay up.

Lobbying: Advocating For Homeless Youth In Philadelphia

Posted by Alexis Beckton in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 10:28 am

I’m lobbying for better advocacy for homeless teenagers and children in the city of Philadelphia. Often time the people of Philadelphia will look down on homeless people and families not realizing that sometimes good people get caught up in unfortunate situations. I think that if we start to change the way the homeless are viewed than homeless teenagers will feel more comfortable seeking help.

In 2008 The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Homeless Health Initiative confirmed that “the number of children under the age of 17 experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia grew from 3,433 in 2008 to 3,582 in 2009 — a four percent increase.”  With more and more children and teens becoming homeless every year it’s clear we have a problem.

16139_311808310631_301854180631_9335306_7916872_n

And the two biggest supporters of the cities young homeless population are the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Northwest Philadelphia and “CHOP’s” Homeless Health Initiative. IHN is designed to help find housing for or give referrals to the homeless while HHI help to provide dental and medical services to homeless children.

Currently there is no law in place to advocate for the homeless youth to find shelter, have access to clean resources or help them get into contact with companies that might know how to help them. However they are laws that state that homeless children are still required to go to school.  To me there is a disconnect in our thinking and I would like to propose that we change how we define homeless youth so that more children can be helped and that we mandate that children under 17 be forced to live in a shelter and be accounted for as opposed to wandering the streets.

Douglas v. California Pharmacists Association

Posted by Alexis Beckton in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 8:14 am

On Monday October 3rd, the Supreme Court had a hearing for a public case that dealt with California’s health care providers moving to cut reimbursements for Medicaid care. In 2008 and 2009 the state legislature lowered the amount of possible reimbursements to the health care companies because they were having financial troubles. As expected there was a great fall back on the poor and disabled who are the main beneficiaries of Medicaid. This case isn’t as much about whether the health care cuts are legal because no one has a legal right to Medicaid, but whether or not independent parties have the right to sue to make sure the policy is working the way it should.

There is still however the question of whether or not it’s constitutional. The supreme clause says that the U.S. constitution is the supreme laws of the land and that state judges must follow federal law when there is conflict between state and federal law. Because the U.S. department of Health and Human Services is who enforced the federal law for each state to have an approved plan the change to the plan has been considered unconstitutional.

Physics Blogs

Posted by Alexis Beckton in Physics - Echols on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 3:51 pm
For the fourth quarter fire streams benchmark was about waves and frequencies and how the corresponded to certain instruments. What I liked about the project is that we were able to choose any instrument we wanted and had the freedom of making it however we wanted. However in choosing my own instrument I was surprised by how much work this project took. I didn't believe building a xylophone would take so many calculations. With this being said the most lasting impact I got from the project was seeing all my classmates present their instruments. It was really fun to see people showcase their work.

For my instrument with was the xylophone, sound is produced by the vibrations that occur after the bar is struck. The pitch of the bar is based on the vibrations also therefore the longer the bar the longer the wavelength and the deeper the note.
For my instrument I choose to use steel bars, I choose these materials because they are closest to what most xylophones are made of. I will play my instrument with a mallet.
