William Potts Capstone

Posted by William Potts in Capstone - Dunda on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 8:34 pm

For my capstone I wanted to do something that would have a lasting effect on the school.  I was thinking about giving something to the school as part of my project.  I started to think about my interests.  One of my biggest interests is botany.  I then decided I wanted to donate plants to enhance the decor of the school.  I began my research at the Horticultural Society Library where I learned about which plants grow best indoors.  I also learned about the effects plants have on work places - that they increase productivity and attendance.  As well, there is the benefit of the oxygen that plants provide.  My project then took me through the steps of purchasing, transporting and repotting the plants I chose for the area on the second floor outside the elevators (near the nurse's office).  One of the greatest experiences I had while repotting the plants was with all the people who were walking by at the time. Everyone was saying that it was really nice, and it looked great.  Other people stopped to asked me questions about my knowledge of plants and how to take care of their own plants.  And some people had advice for helping me.  My project will continue on after I leave SLA.  I have passed on the torch to the students in the lower grades who have volunteered to take on the responsibility of watering and caring for the plants.  I really enjoyed my project and I hope others will too for a long time to come.  Below are some pictures of the area where the plants have found a new home.

NaQuan Harding Capstone

For my Capstone, I wanted to truly test my skills as a writer. So, I decided to attempt at writing a novel. Specifically, I wanted to aim for a word range between 150,000–200,000  words. Throughout my life, I’ve only been writing short stories; the longest one that I’ve ever written was around 20,000 words long, so this is a very large jump for me. I feel like I’ve read more than enough novels in my life to understand the general plot structure, such as build-up, exposition, character development, etc. As a result, I think that I’d be able to pull it off.

However, there’s one other thing that I want to test myself on as a writer. When it comes to my writing style, I’m very literal and up front when it comes to my use of words. I’m very conservative–hesitant, even–to try and use things like metaphors, similes, and symbolism. I want to try and change that in this project, even if it ends up hurting the story overall because of it. It’s a risk, but I won’t know if I won’t try.

In the end, even though it isn’t finished, I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot as a writer. Even looking back, I can see a million different ways to change the story as is.

This links to the story (currently unfinished).

Isabella Tognini Capstone

Project: "Ode to Teenagehood"

Mentor: Eileen Tognini

I started this school year, assuming that I should make a capstone that has to do with what I wanted to do in college, which is to study business and economics. Though after awhile and have a few suggestions from friends and family, I figured that I should save all of that for college, and do something hands-on and creative, which I won't get much of a chance to do in college. This made me think about a big part of my life, which is art. My Mother, Eileen Tognini is an art curator, and I've always lived with art in my house. Since I'm such a supporter of art and because the school district isn't so supportive of art classes, I figured I'd create something that embraces the art community at SLA, an area in which I love to collaborate in. The first part of this capstone was a Van's Custom Culture competition. Ms. Hull and I selected a handful of students who would help out with the design of four pairs of shoes. This part took some serious management and time to finish. The second part of my capstone was an art gallery in the third floor ballroom, called "Ode to Teenagehood". My goal for the space was to exhibit what we create in high school, including poems, sketches, paintings, and photographs. For my entire project, I collaborated with many students, one of them being my partner, Bernicia.

Jessica Hinton Capstone

I’ve always enjoyed creating music. Whether I was sampling other songs or making my own tracks using instruments or beats in Garageband. I’ve created songs in the past for projects, and created songs just for fun. For my capstone, I decided that I would create and produce a gospel album. I chose to use my church choir, and we recorded 8 songs for the album. Below you'll find the annotated bibliography, a picture detailing the track listing on the album, links to the songs, and the cover art for the album. Hope you enjoy!

Bethany Carter Capstone

In this project I made a video game. I did the artistic part, modeling and texturing, but focused on the coding. I decided to make a video game because I wanted to learn about what was needed to make a video game and if I could do it. Before this project I thought it would be interesting to get a career in video gaming but wanted to make sure I both enjoyed and did well in this field of computer science. Now I am more confident that this career would be a good choice for me.

Jennifer Landham Capstone

Posted by Jennifer Landham in Capstone - Dunda on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 9:54 am

Hello my name is Jennifer Landham. For years I had watched and observed my grandmother and father throwing down and cooking in the kitchen. This had always interested me. I had always been that kid to sit in the kitchen when all of the other kids were cooking and playing. Since then my interest has not changed but really expanded.

My capstone is about this exact interest. I love everything that has to do with cooking, especially baking, which I prefer so much more. This is a basic cooking blog with the directions that are not difficult to follow and  understand. I really loved doing this, I also had made a video channel which s posted on the website.

Newscast

Abstract

For my capstone I basically made a bunch of newscast that talked about current events. I was part of the MightyPost program and so I needed to attract teens using the media. I was the producer, writer, director editor and the anchor. I decided to do this because I really enjoy working with media. When I was a kid I wanted to be a news anchor for sports but now my dreams had changed and I want to be behind the scenes. I am going to major in Telecommunications which is the behind the scenes broadcasting, as well as behind the scenes for all media connection, like the internet for example. Like I said my goal was to attract teens so some videos were about current events and others were about stories that teens would love or find interesting. I do enjoy editing the films the most because I can present my creativity which is fun and somewhat relates to my current major.

This was a research paper made by a student on radiation and how it affects broadcasting. Although the title made sound pointless it actually gave me information on international broadcasting. Although I only read the abstract, not the full paper because the full paper cost money. I used the information when I am making a script for the newscast.

Williams, David. 28 Jan 2013. Jan . Print.

I go to meetings with Dave every Monday and Wednesday. What I talk about with him are some topics I could use for the newscast that current week. On Wednesdays Dave is there helping me film and gives me constructive criticism on my videos. He also gives me a newspaper to find some interesting news.

"CNN." N.p., n. d. Web. Web. 1 Feb. 2013. <http://www.cnn.com/>.

This is just a plain website that I receive most of my stories from. I believe CNN is a great news source that talks about the top news while not being as biased like most websites. Most of the stories I do for the newscast, comes from CNN. I give my interpretation of the stories and explain them during my newscast.
