Jessica Hinton Capstone

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Capstone - Dunda on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 5:24 pm
I’ve always enjoyed creating music. Whether I was sampling other songs or making my own tracks using instruments or beats in Garageband. I’ve created songs in the past for projects, and created songs just for fun. For my capstone, I decided that I would create and produce a gospel album. I chose to use my church choir, and we recorded 8 songs for the album. Below you'll find the annotated bibliography, a picture detailing the track listing on the album, links to the songs, and the cover art for the album. Hope you enjoy!

Philly Love Note

Jessica

Favorite Spot: Belmont Plateau

Neighborhood: Fairmount Park

I am: High school senior

Years in Philly: Whole Life

Current Home: Wynnefield

Philly,

Not many people get to experience the many wonders that you're filled with. The delicious food, the diverse cultures, the elaborate murals, the energetic sports fanatics and the sights and sounds that are all around. I however, enjoy the beautiful views of the city from the Belmont Plateau. Although not in the city, I like to admire you from afar. Looking out over the plateau seeing how pretty you are when the sun rises and when the sun sets. So, while some might like to be amongst the bustle and liveliness in the heart of the city, I find my peace at the top of the plateau gazing at the skyline of the city. I love you Philly. Thanks for being my home.

xoxo,

Q2 Food Benchmark

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Science and Society - Best on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 8:19 pm
Shepherd's Pie

Prep: 10 minutes   Cook: 50 minutes  Total Time: 1 hour

Makes: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs. ground turkey
  • 1 cup onion chopped
  • 1-2 cups vegetables - (corn, peas, chopped carrots)
  • 1 1/2 - 2 lbs. potatoes (3 big potatoes)
  • 8 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 jar of Heinz Beef Au Jus Gravy
  • 1 can of Campbell’s French Onion Soup
  • Ground pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400º F. Spray an 8x8 inch or 11x7 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Peel and cut the potatoes. Boil in water until tender (about 20 minutes).
  3. While potatoes are being cooked, melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a large frying pan.
  4. Sauté onions and carrots in butter over medium heat. Add the corn and peas to the pan and let the vegetables cook until the onions begin to brown.
  5. In another pan, cook the ground turkey. Stir to brown. Cook until meat is cooked through. Add salt, pepper, gravy and soup. Mix. Add this mixture to the vegetables.
  6. Mash the potatoes in a bowl, and use the remaining butter. Add extra seasoning if necessary.
  7. Place the ground turkey and vegetables in the baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes on top.
  8. Cook until the potatoes begin to brown (about 30 minutes). Allow time for cooling before served.

Note:

Instead of using mashed potatoes, you can use sweet potatoes. You could also use ground beef instead of ground turkey.

Analysis:

The ground turkey is semi-processed. It's gluten free, all natural, and is 65% less fat than ground beef. The vegetables aren't really processed, because they're organic. This meal is about 390 calories per serving. The only ingredient that could cause possible health issues is the butter. Too much butter can lead to different health issues like high coronary artery disease, stroke, and other issues do to the blockage of arteries. However, with this recipe there is no need for excess butter, so these issues aren't anything to worry about. The ingredients for this recipe are all from the United States. Jennie-O's farm locations are in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and the potatoes are from Idaho. So, the potatoes traveled the farthest. Corn and peas can be grown anywhere in the country, as long as the growing conditions are fine. Carrots are primarily grown in California. The food that traveled the farthest, were the carrots. The meal cost under $10 for the full recipe. At fast food restaurants you can get a bit more for about $10 than this. But, this meal has some vegetables and it also has meat for protein. So, it's healthier even though it might be a little less than what you can get in the drive-thru. The farmers and the turkey corporation (Jennie-O) made money off of my meal.

Reflection:

It's kind of hard to point out what my actual role is in the larger food system, because I think we have so many. There are many different ways that people can and have contributed to the food system. We're consumers for the most part, but some people are producers, farmers, or business leaders in the food system today.

Our biggest problems with our food system is the lack of knowledge about things that are grown or produced in our country or around the world to be consumed, and the rapidly increasing obesity rate in our country. There are so many people who don't have access to "healthy" food due to their financial status and their location. There are also so many people that just eat terribly, and are causing their health to deteriorate. The obesity rate years ago wasn't as bad as it is now. Obesity affects adults as well as many children. These obesity rates can come from the amount of food eaten, lack of exercise and lack of important nutrients in a person's diet. If more and more people gain knowledge about how to improve their health and to eat right, we could see the obesity rate lower.

For the most part, I eat pretty healthy on a daily basis. My mom makes healthy, home cooked dinner each night. And, I don't like sugary drinks (I dilute all of my juice), and I try to steer clear of soda. So, I guess the change I want to make isn't much of a change but more of a continuation of the lifestyle I lead now. If I continue to eat right, and exercise and stay healthy then I think I'll be fine.

Food Rules Slide:
I wanted my slide to be pretty simple, because the rule is simple! My family eats dinner together every night, and since it's so important to us I think that more people should try to do so more often.

Patriot Act

Posted by Jessica Hinton in American Government - Herman on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 3:01 pm
After reading the different essays in the forum about the Patriot Act, it's obviously clear that there is a number of people that agree and disagree with the provisions of this act. It causes quite a swarm of debate about whether or not we still need it, and whether or not it's useful today. The safety of the citizens in this country is the main concern. That is all that the government is trying to accomplish with this act.

It's important to note, that this act does not just focus on international terrorists, but also terrorists within our own country. The act does not focus on "innocent" Americans, so no one should be too worried about being "spied" on, unless they're doing something they shouldn't. Basically, the government won't waste their time spying on anyone that does not need to be watched. They focus on people that have the potential to harm others.

Due to the rise of technology, and more resources available for people to purchase (legally, and illegally), I believe that the act should still be a law. The security, and safety of the citizens should never be compromised, and should continue to be the highest priority for this government. Although some may be unaware, this act has actually stopped more than 30 terror plots. So, while some may think this is wrong, and unjust, it's better to think about how this has helped, rather than how it hurts.

Enemy of the State - JHinton

Posted by Jessica Hinton in American Government - Herman on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Being that this wasn't the first time I've seen this movie, I always feel that this is one of Tony Scott's best films. Anyways, when you watch a movie for enjoyment, it's totally different than watching, and trying to pick out specific things. It was weird watching it, after learning about the USA PATRIOT Act. To realize that all of the technical things are attainable now, is kind of crazy. And to think that there are people who have to listen in on the private things that people speak about, email, or text to others is kind of weird. It would be nice to speak to someone with this job, and see how it affects them as an individual.

In the movie, the government is portrayed as being SUPERIOR! Not that they aren't, but the government officials in the movie acted as if they were the only important things living. It was also kind of weird to see that the different government agencies didn't really work together. It was like they each had their own agendas to tend to.

The citizens in the movie, were treated as though they weren't "human beings". Kind of like the government officials were the only people that should really have a say so in what takes place in the country. It was kind of like they let people believe they're living their own "private lives", while in reality, they're really being invaded by appointed government officials.

Honestly, if the government was spying on me, there isn't anything to do to prevent it. How does one go about telling someone higher up than me, that they can't dig into my personal life? I've known before that the government can monitor certain technical aspects of our lives, but now I'll definitely be a bit more cautious of things I send out now, just because I see the bigger picture of the whole thing. In a way, I'm not opposed to it, because it's supposed to be for "our own good", but I'm also not totally excited about it either. We're subject to these conditions, because of the world we live in. We'll just have to get over it.

10% Project - Physics of Dance

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Physics - Echols on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 8:33 am
For the 10% project, we had the opportunity to choose a topic of our choice, and then we would present our research. For the project, I decided to focus on the ‘Physics of Dance’. Being that I have a personal connection to dance, it was interesting to learn about how there is physics involved in dance. I never really thought about it until we started the project, and now I have a whole new understanding for it.

I compiled a little document about some of the important things I learned regarding physics and dance. In the document, you'll learn about balance, rotations, and jumps. Those are some of the main topics I read about, and I think those are a good start for learning.

Summer Reading Recommendation

Posted by Jessica Hinton in English 3 - Rami on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 9:58 am
I recommend reading the book For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf by Ntozake Shange. I suggested this book, because I actually read this for summer reading a last year. I really enjoyed it. This book is actually a choreopoem. Shange, being the first one to use the term “choreopoem” when this was published in 1975. It’s basically used to define combined poetry. The characters in the poems, all women, are not known by name, but by color. Hence, the reason I just added lots of color to this poster instead of any other thing. Being someone that doesn't usually gravitate to poetry books, I enjoyed reading it.

Jessica Hinton - Q4BM What If?

Posted by Jessica Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 11:30 pm
My point of divergence, was focused on the 2000 Presidential Election. If there was a different ballot system for the election (specifically in Florida), there would be no confusion amongst voters, and there would be no mistake when the votes were being counted. With there being no mistake, there would be no reason for a recount of votes. Thus, the outcome for this election would be that Al Gore would be declared the winner of the election. I envisioned our country with lower taxes, and less pollution. I kind of got these ideas, from things that Gore spoke about in different debates and interviews. These are only two of the things that he was passionate about, and I felt that it would be important to include these. I also believed that our country would begin to become more Democratic than Republican.

I liked that for this project, we were basically changing history the way we wanted it. I
thought that was pretty cool. The part of the project that was the most challenging, would probably be finding the three existing sources. I felt that I should focus more on Gore, being that he was the one that was going to win for my project. Since I had to look into what actually happened during the election, I was reading a lot about the number of votes each candidate received, and the popular votes they received. I think what was interesting, was that many people afterwards believed that Gore should have actually won. It was interesting to see how these numbers all affected the outcome of the election.

The actions of individuals for my topic, was that it changed a whole election.
The election could have come out one way, but due to the mistakes made by certain individuals, messed up the outcome. I feel that one decision can impact history in many different ways. For this project, the Supreme Court's decision to do a statewide recount affected the possibility that Gore would become the president. However, whether the decision is good or bad, the impact it can have on history is major.

To improve this project, I think that maybe there should be a little bit more
time to get everything together. It's not that this was a benchmark that was extremely hard, it's just that it was a very tedious assignment. I also feel that there should be a project description given to us when we start the project. The benchmark contract served as somewhat of a guide, but when it came time to put the presentation together, I didn't know if there was something I was missing. If I had to do this project over, I think the thing that I would change about my process, would be the way I presented everything. I like the way I chose to present my information, but I couldn't decide how I wanted to present. I was going to use Prezi, but that was taking too long. I was also going to use a website named SlideRocket, which is kind of like Keynote/Powerpoint, but I realized that my sources wouldn't fit. So, I decided that pages would be the best way to present the information that I compiled.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I felt really comfortable speaking with her. I kind of went right into the conversation, and didn't hesitate.

I felt really comfortable speaking with him, so I think that's why my Spanish was much better. We spoke a little bit about school, and then we spent time speaking about the culture in Colombia.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with a guy named Julian. This time, I decided to switch to my Sharedtalk account. So, he requested that we chat, and I accepted.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

For this conversation, we spoke about music. He was telling me about how he played the piano and the guitar, and what kind of music he liked to listen to.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Even though this was the first conversation we've had, I feel like I wasn't as nervous as I was when I did my first chat with the other person on Livemocha. I also think I did better with asking questions, and using Spanish throughout the conversation.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I improved with asking them questions, and improving my use of Spanish in the conversation.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with the same person I did for the first blog. His name is Alex, and he's from Columbia.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

For this conversation, we were speaking about a few different things. He was telling me about how he admired the United States... a lot. And we talked about his favorite food... which happened to be American food, and Columbian food. And we talked about movies.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

With this only being our second conversation, I wasn't as nervous as before. But, he noticed that my responses were better than before. I feel a bit more confident in asking questions and replying.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did better with asking questions, and being able to reply without much hesitation.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I think I should start making a little list of things to talk about during the conversations.

*Because my person is trying to learn English, he was responding to my questions in English.*

Proyecto de Conversación - Jessica Hinton

Partner: Alex. Bogota, Columbia (LiveMocha)
  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with someone on LiveMocha. His name is Alex. I didn't really have anyone else to speak to. The person I wanted to speak with, wasn't available, so I spoke with him.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

We spoke about music for most of the conversation. So, I learned about his music preference.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Well, because I didn't know him, I was a little nervous. So, there were times during the conversation where I was making dumb mistakes. But, it helped me to realize, that I should be confident about using spanish.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I was able to hold a conversation. We spoke spanish for the entire conversation, unless I needed clarification.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

Like I stated above, I was making dumb mistakes. Like using "mucha" instead of "mucho" during one part in the conversation. So, I should be aware of the words I'm using, and where I use them.

-How was your weekend?

- What's your city like?

- What do you like to do in your free time?

- (Maybe a topic about music, or television shows, or anything else that I might be able to relate to.)

2.
a. What went well?
I feel that we did a good job collecting different sources about our topic. We also did well communicating how to display this on our visual.

b. What did not?
A few times, there were a few communication disputes, but they were quickly resolved. Other than that, I feel that we were pretty successful.

c. What would you do differently next time?
For me, I feel that if we did the infographic on a site that all of us could edit on, everyone would be able to take part in actually working on the visual, instead of having it on one computer, and having one person actually put it together.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise : We provided different information, and it was brief.

Be Visual: We did well using different graphics to display information we learned.

Be Smarter : The design of the visual is clever, and smart.

Be Transparent : It's clear to interpret the idea, and topic of the visual, without much background information given. It gets straight to the point about the issue.

Be Different : I think it is different, because we included different colors, and objects to portray the issue that we researched.

Be Accurate : All of the information that is given, was fully researched, so nothing is false.

Be Attractive : Our visual is quite attractive.

Be Varied : We included different elements, and numbers used in the visual.

Be Gracious

Be Creative : The visual is creative with how we display the information, and how the visual is organized.

Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

I think we excelled in "Be Creative", "Be Visual", and "Be Accurate".

Our documentary is about Child Labor during the 1900s. In the documentary, we discuss how it had an effect on children, and how it effected the government/economy. Child Labor took place for many years, and in some countries still continues to go on today.

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?

For the benchmark, we were to either make a podcast or a movie speaking about relationships.

What did your group decide to do and why?

-My group made a podcast, because we felt that it would be better to record our voices than make a video.

What did you learn from doing this project?

I think that I learned more vocab words. There were only a few words that I knew before this, and now I feel that I learned a few more. I also think I learned a little more about the use of subjunctives.

How do you feel about your final product?

I like our final product. I think that putting the script together wasn't too bad. We were able to come up with an idea pretty quickly, so putting the script together wasn't all that bad. And, we were able to effectively record the podcast.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

I think if we could do it all over again, I would want to probably record again, and maybe do a video instead of a radio show.

Jessica Hinton - Business Project Reflection

Posted by Jessica Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 12:09 pm
Amanda and I chose to make a visual for our project. We started out with a Prezi, but that wasn't working for us. So, we decided to make a collage. We have pictures of President Obama, and President FDR. We have a wordle, that has words that we've learned or used throughout the business unit. We also added some cartoons, that connect to some of the policies, or controversial things that connected to the Presidents.

The EQ that we used was: What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

Our collage displayed the different things that the Presidents have done, so achieve "change". The change that these presidents, as individuals have accomplished during their presidency, has shaped the way things are handled in the United States today. The change they created, has sustained throughout time, and continues to exist today.

Contaminación del Aire

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 9:04 pm

I think that maybe I would discuss how these solutions are better for the environment.

Jessica Hinton Sci-Fi Short Story

Posted by Jessica Hinton in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:01 pm
"Clashing with Clones"

We’re finally close to perfecting this formula! Liam and I have been working on this for 2 years now. Now our ideas are finally coming a reality. All the hard work, long hours, and countless trials we’ve been through, are beginning to pay off. I knew we would get to this point sooner or later, but I honestly did not believe that it would turn out the way it did. This morning, we’re meeting with the Dean of the school, to discuss what we’ve come up with.

As I swiftly made my way across the campus to the Dean’s office, I can’t help being slightly nervous about our presentation.

What is he going to say? Will he approve? What’s our next step? These few thoughts swirl around my head. I feel as though I shouldn’t have anything to worry about. However, for some reason I just can’t seem to rid these thoughts from my mind. I arrive at the office door, with a plaque that says “Dr. Mark Clover, Dean of University”, took a deep breath, and knocked.

The door opens, and there stands Dr. Mark Clover, Dean of Tasker University.

“Well hello Dr. Connor, very pleased to see you”, exclaims Dr. Clover.

“Hello sir! Nice to see you as well”, I replied.

As I entered, I took the time to glance around the room. Dean Clover has a pretty nice office. I’ve always admired the art that covered the walls, and the huge windows that overlook the East side of the campus.  I then caught sight of Liam sitting in a chair in front of Dean Clover’s desk. I went and beside Liam, in the chair adjacent to him.

“Are you ready?” he whispers to me as I take the seat.

“Yes, I think so” I hesitated.

“Alright… let’s do this,” he declared.

And now… the meeting begins.

As I quietly sat in the seat, I tried to think positive, and keep my composure. It’s not everyday that you’re sitting in the Dean’s office, awaiting for a make or break decision, that could change your life.

“Well gentlemen, look how far you’ve come,” stated the Dean as he strolled to his seat. “What information do you have for me today?”

“Sir, we’ve finally come to the end of testing. This formula we’ve created is strong enough to get rid of all the clones that were mass-produced. The array of chemicals that we’ve conjured up, have the power to shut down the clone within 3 minutes.” Liam states with excitement in his voice.

“That is impressive. Does this formula have any effect on humans?” questioned Dean Clover.

“Thank you sir. It does not have any effects on humans. It is not made for humans, so it won’t have any effect on us” replied Liam.

“Excuse me, but we’re not exactly sure of the effects this could have on humans. We never tested…” I stated, before being interrupted by Liam.

“Yes, but we did not see any need to test humans. Yes, the clones are more important to worry about. The effect the formula might have on humans is not nearly as much as an effect it has on the clones,” Liam interjected.

The room was silent for a few seconds. Who would speak next? What else does the Dean want to know?

“I have one last question… Dr. Liam, you told me earlier, that this could make us loads of money. How soon can we start producing and selling this?” asked Dean Clover.

“We could put this on the market within a few months. No questions asked.” Liam blurted out.

“Actually… no we can’t. We have not finished the appropriate tests to assure that this product will get rid of the clones. If it is not correct, the clones will just continue producing, and will wreak havoc everywhere,” I retorted.

The office got silent once again. This time, I was confused… there were new questions that entered my mind.

“Why would Liam discuss manufacturing this, and we hadn’t perfected it?”

We already discussed that this couldn’t be marketed yet, so why did he go behind my back? I pondered.

“It is clear that there are a few minor details that the two of you need to work out. I’ll let you two go, and discuss them, and once they’re sorted out, we can come back for another meeting. Thank you for your time Dr. Liam, and Dr. Connor”, Dean Clover stated as he stood up and shook our hands.

Once outside of the office, Liam immediately began jumping down my throat about the comments I made.

“Why would you tell him it wasn’t ready? We’re almost done with our testing. We’ve already gone through the “business” side of this, so there shouldn’t be a problem”, shouted Liam.

“Listen, we can’t produce something unless it is complete and perfect. I can’t lie to him, and tell him that we’re completely finished with them”. I shot back at him

“Connor, I don’t know what’s gotten into you lately, but I will work on getting more money for us. With the formula, we’ll be getting paid a large sum of money.”

“Liam, you can’t possibly believe that this will do well on the market without the proper testing. That’s not smart, and you…”

“Honestly, if you have such a problem with it, then fine. Don’t worry about getting a paycheck. We don’t need to worry about humans… this is for the clones. It will have no connection at all.  Liam stated, as he began to walk away.

As, Liam walked away he turned back around to give me an “evil look”. Something just doesn’t seem right. After Liam walked away, I had this weird sensation that something would just go wrong. I stood there confused about how I should handle this little ordeal, but also worried about what would happen next.

“What are we going to do about the clones? How much more testing needs to be done? Is Liam going to begin to produce it? What can I do to stop him?”

Little did I know… that soon my worries would become far greater than anyone could have expected.

As I entered the laboratory the next morning, I was startled to see what had taken place. Vials lying around, chemicals spilled, broken glass, and papers strewn all across 3the floor. What do I do now?

Working as a tomato picker in Florida is very difficult. Not only do these people work for long hours, but they are also mistreated. For every 32 lb. bucket of tomatoes they pick, they only receive 50 cents.

The problem with buying tomatoes from Trader Joe's, is that the C.I.W is trying to form an agreement with them to make them buy their tomatoes for one cent per lb, to help the Immokalee workers in Florida.

What we can do about it?

J.Hinton, Q-1 History Benchmark Reflection

Reflection
:

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
We wanted to focus on something serious that would make people get out to vote. An easy way to
get the voter ratings to increase. So, we came to the conclusion that making voting mandatory, that would drastically increase the percentage of voters.

11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

I think that the role of the individual, is to stick to what they believe in. The individual should continue to do what they think/know is right without being influenced by others. They should also have a positive influence on others in their community, and those around them.

How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a
democracy evolved during this unit?
When we first started the unit, there was so much to take in. When we started the benchmark, we
all jumped to the conclusion that mandatory voting would be beneficial to the voting. However, after doing the election day interviews, it made me realize that even though mandatory might help the voting percentage increase, it is against people's constitutional rights, and many aren't comfortable with it.

How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing
campaign?
We wanted it to be straight forward. We also wanted to make sure that we were able to clearly
get our point across. So, for both of our creative pieces we had bright colors and a big font size.

Election Day Interviews

Posted by Jessica Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 8:42 pm
HPIM2234

Interview #1: Ray Bailey (committee member)

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I'm a committee person for the Democratic party. My job is to make sure that people vote, and have the right to let their voice be heard.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I would like to see the people be more educated about the process of how you become a candidate, and how the votes are tallied up.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes I do. Every election.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

The changes that I'd like to see in this election, would be that the candidates live up to their promises.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I would feel that it takes away a person's right to choose to vote or not.

HPIM2236

Interview #2: Faye Tyler

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I'm a good citizen. It's my duty.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I don't really know. There are a few things that I would like to see changed, but I can't think of them all now.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes I do.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

Hopefully, a cleaner city.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I would feel uncomfortable. If I knew I had to, it wouldn't feel the same to me.

HPIM2237

Interview #3: Judge John Younge

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I always vote. It was taught to me by my parents. They're from the South, and they always voted. I didn't know people didn't vote until I got older.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I'd like to see a city where there is a minimization of money in politics. That the political figures focus on issues.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

I hope we get our fiscal house in order. And that we fix our tax situation, so that we attract businesses and people to our city. All this without harming poor people.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

This is a free country. With that comes the choice to vote. Maybe if we did early voting, or computerized voting, or maybe even voting on the weekend. Mandatory voting would be against our constitutional right to vote.

HPIM2238

Interview #4: Janienne Hinton

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

To make sure I have a voice.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

More cooperation among different parties.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

More funds for the school system, and city services

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I'm for it if there's no fine. If there is a fine, I would be against it.

Interview #5: Linda Tripp

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

It's my civic duty.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

That both political parties get together to make Pennsylvania a better state.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

Hopefully, both parties get together to change the future of our city and state.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I'd feel uncomfortable. To make me vote for someone I don't want or have to vote for would make me uncomfortable.

*The following interview was conducted the following day (Monday) via email*

Interview #6: W. Wilson Goode Jr. (Councilman - at - Large)

1. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

My law enacted campaign contribution limits but it's up to the "one person- one vote" to prevail.

2. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

I will continue to increase economic opportunity in terms of creating new jobs, better wages and benefits as well as business and workforce diversity.

3. How do you think we can improve voter turnout in Philadelphia?

People vote when they believe that it will make a difference.

4. What inspired you to run for office?

I'm the son of a Mayor but also the grandson of sharecroppers who endured economic discrimination - I fight for justice!

5. How do you feel about making voting mandatory?

People should go to the polling place to vote even if they don't like any of the candidates - and there is a ""NO CONFIDENCE" vote option.

De Donde Vengo Yo?: Jessica Hinton

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 9:22 pm
What did you learn?
Besides learning a few new words while researching things for my lyrics, I learned about how to describe where I'm from.

What are you especially proud of?
I'm especially proud of my song, and the lyrics I put together. I like that I was able to get the lyrics to flow right with the song.

What would you change if you could do it over again?
If I was to do this over, maybe I would want to make more verses, so that I actually use the full length of the actual instrumental. For this, I cut and edited a few parts so that the verses and chorus' I had would fit perfectly.

Immigration Visualization Reflection

Immigration graph on Prezi

Immigration

What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
It was interesting to realize that what happened during certain time periods either interested immigrants, or turned them away. It was pretty obvious that if there was more money and jobs available, that more people would want to take advantage of the opportunity.

Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I honestly feel that there could be and increase and a decrease in the immigration numbers for the next two decades. Due to the economy having it's many ups and downs, it could be hard for someone to move here and start a living. There's a lot of changes that are taking place that could be troubling for new citizens. However, I do believe that once everything is taken care of, agreed upon, and settled, the immigration numbers will increase.

Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
My group first wanted to do something really creative, and something that everyone might not choose. We started making a book on the website Tikatok. We soon realized that it wasn't working for the assignment, so we then switched to using Prezi.

What parts of group work were challenging?

We were all new to using Prezi, so we had to get used to using that. Other than that, I think we did a good job with organizing our time periods, and displaying our information that we gathered. We worked well, and worked diligently.

What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
If I could do something differently, I would probably want to use more animations in Prezi. Our presentation basically goes from one time period to the next, but not much movement in between. So, maybe add more things to it.

I'm especially proud of being able to put this song together, and be able to get input from my peers about how to improve.
I may have to change the format of the words, if I have any problems with recording it.
I mainly spoke about the city, and my family. I think it represents who I come from, and where I live basically.
I want fast music, but really something at a good pace that fits well to my lyrics.

¿De dónde vengo yo?
¿De dónde vengo yo?
Vengo de pequeño ciudad
Famosa comida y museos
Es gran... lugar... estar.

- My refrán is supposed to communicate just a small glimpse of Philly. Just something short.
- I think for my first draft I did well with organizing my thoughts.
- I think I should make sure that it goes along with the music.
- The difficult part was making sure I didn't put anything in the refrán that may fit better in a verse.

I am from a popular city.

Warm Summers, a rainy Spring, and a snowy Winter.

I am from Monument road, where the leaves and flowers

scatter the yard.

I am from "dust this, clean that, do this, do that"

I'm from New Year's Day brunch

with people filling the house.

I'm from hands on waist

Arms Crossed, stern look disciplinarians.

Church going, "Amen"

and prayer reciting Christians.

From the strong veterans

serving our country

and protecting the family.

I am from great cooks and amazing bakers

sending beautiful scents around the house.

From the Davenports from Virginia

with a poultry farm

and many acres of land.

I am from loving friends

who are there to talk and laugh whenever we need it.

I am from singers, dancers, and musicians

For my project, I made a little movie speaking about my past, present, and future. I like the pictures, and music I added to the movie. I think that if I could do anything differently, I would add more information to the movie. All in all, I enjoyed putting together this video.

Jessica Hinton Marking Period 4

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 7:08 am
The art project's for this quarter weren't as bad as the previous ones. I feel that I was a little bit more engaged in these pieces of art. I took my time, and made sure that each one was completed and looked the way I wanted them to. However, I feel that there were a few art pieces that I wish I would have spent more time on.  I enjoyed doing the sculpture, because I took my time to make these flowers look like actual flowers, and I was learning a new skill while doing so. I enjoyed copying a piece of art by an artist, because I think I really impressed myself with how diligent I was with making my drawing look like the original drawing.  I wasn't really fond of doing the bike drawings, because there were many parts of the bike, that should be included in the drawing, but were difficult to draw. If I was to improve on anything this quarter, I would perfect my pieces of art. Sometimes I feel that what I consider "complete", may not exactly be completed.

For this mini project, I did the Artist Focus. The artist that I chose to do was Andy Warhol. I am fond of the different pieces that he created, so I tried my best to recreate them. I am proud of my Mickey Mouse drawing, because I was really focused when I was doing it, so I think it turned out well.

Jessica Hinton Marking Period Three

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 6:00 pm
I think that the reason these were so hard, was because I felt overwhelmed with work. With there being a project a week, I didn't feel that I had enough time to work on each assignment. I think that maybe I could have used more time to complete the projects. I enjoyed doing the small self portrait, because I did one a few years ago, so I was familiar with making sure I took my time with making it look correct. I also enjoyed doing the large still life, because I took my time, and tried to make sure that every part of the scene I could see was drawn on the paper. I didn't enjoy doing the full figure, because I feel that I could have used more time to enhance the physical features. I feel that if we went over how to do some of the drawings as a class, I would feel a little bit more confident in some of my art pieces. I feel that next time, I should focus, and pace myself to achieve the right finishing product I want.

"It Don't Matter If You're Black Or White" by Jessica Hinton

For my podcast, I interviewed my aunt and uncle about what things they've had to face, and what people thought about them because they were in an interracial marriage. I also interviewed my mom and grandma about how they felt about the marriage.

Jessica Hinton Marking Period Two

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 9:30 pm
For this marking period, we were allowed to pick the project we wanted to do. I didn't really know what I wanted to do. It was either photography, or do some drawing. After a lot of thinking, I decided that I wanted to draw the Eiffel Tower.
I drew the Eiffel Tower last year, as one of my brainstorms for the periodic table assignment, but I didn't use that one for my element picture. So, I thought that this time, I would try it again. I liked the one I did last year, but I wanted this one to look different than that. My plan was to have this one set at nighttime, with the stars in the background. I had a lot of inspiration for this project. I think that Paris is a really beautiful place. I've had a picture of the Eiffel Tower that I fixed up in picnik as my desktop picture for a long time. So, I used that, and other pictures I found to help me. I also used howstuffworks.com to help me.
I have not yet finished this. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would to do the sketch. Once I finished that, I had to get the canvas, and then draw it on there. So, now all I need to do is paint the canvas.

"The Sound of White"

Gold Stream

1 – 13 – 10

“The Sound of White”

“Why ya talk like that?”

“Like what?” I replied.

 “Like that.”

“I don’t know what you’re trying to say.” I exclaimed.

“Ya talk … like a white person.”

“Oh… ok,” I stammered.

How should I reply to someone calling me a “white person”? Am I supposed to recognize different types of speech at ten years old? I’ve constantly been told that I speak differently, but I didn’t really notice it. I felt that I spoke the same way everyone else did. Well, that was in fourth grade, but throughout elementary school, I wasn’t able to tell the difference. I mean, there were a few kids in the class that occasionally used “slang”, but I didn’t think it was different than how the rest of the kids spoke.

I went to a K-8 school, so the same people that called me “white” in elementary school were the same people that called me “white” in middle school. In middle school, I was jokingly called “white girl”, but I didn’t really mind it anymore. It had been going on for so long that I just ignored it, and would answer them anyway. It didn’t really offend me. I had no idea as to what their intention were for calling me that, but it was never said in a harmful way so I had no reason to get angry about the name.

It wasn’t until the summer before seventh grade that I actually questioned how exactly a “white person” spoke. Of all the year’s I was called “white”, I never really questioned the reason for them calling me that.

“Why ya talk like a white person?”

“How does a white person talk?” I questioned.

“They talk all proper and stuff.”

Honestly, I was still a little confused. I didn’t feel that speaking proper was exclusively for one group of people. I’m an African – American, but people don’t think that. Everyone speaks a common language, but people aren’t all the same, so there are different ways that they sound.

A few weeks ago, I was on ichat with a friend.  We weren’t really talking about much, but my responses to her made her question me.

“Whatcha doing?”

“Nothing much. What are you doing?” I replied

“Why you typing all proper?”

I didn’t really know how to answer that. It’s no different than someone asking me why I spoke like a “white girl”. I don’t have an explanation for why I speak the way I do, except that I was raised this way. Yes, sometimes I might catch on to what other people are saying, but the way I speak will stay the same.  This is who I am, and there is no one, and nothing that will ever be able to change that about me.

According to James Baldwin, “language incontestably reveals the speaker”. He feels that a person’s speech reveals their identity, and defines them as such. This is why many people are judged. Some people believe that your race determines the way you speak. There are many connections that people draw to conclude the race of someone. For example, African – American’s are stereotypically loud, obnoxious, and speak using slang. But, not all African – American’s fit into that stereotype. I’m one of those people. I am a little shy, and am soft-spoken.

From these experiences, I’ve learned something. You can’t judge someone because of the way they speak. There are many qualities of people that are different than others. People sound, act, and look different than each other. You just have to accept that. Your speech may somewhat reveal who you are, but you have to move past that and view them as a human being.

Spanish Q1 Benchmark

The purpose of this project was to teach Noah, a friend of Señorita G, Spanish. We were to design a video that would explain the main topics to discuss, which  were present tense and past tense verbs.  We Our goals Ask others about what they did this summer. Name of game show: Fui en el mejor espectáculo de prueba en el mundo! Talk about what they did this summer Communicate with others The viewers will be able to enjoy speaking español. Most importantly have fun. Our group reflects on our collaboration and realizes that there are a lot of improvements that we need to make for future projects such as, time management and dividing up the work properly in the beginning to have each role run smoothly. One of the things we are proud of is our ability to come up with interesting ideas and thinking out of the box to apply Spanish in a way that would captivate an audience as well as inform effectively. A few questions we would ask Noah are - Did you prepare for your adventure to a foreign country? Why was it so important for you to travel to a country where you didn't speak their language? What complications did you face when transferring cultures and languages? What would YOU have done different if you could start your voyage over?

Jessica Hinton Marking Period One

Posted by Jessica Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 7:31 am
During the first marking period, the main idea is all about recycling. During quarter 1, we made posters to hang around the school, asking the students to save their bottle caps, and bring them to the art room so that we could use them in our art. Those bottle caps collected also went to Aurora Robinson, and she used them to create her art that is being displayed at an art gallery here in Philadelphia.

Artist Statement:

For quarter 2, the assignment was to create any piece of art, using recycled materials. My decision was to make art using something that I could use and help eliminate from landfills, and make something that people would be able to relate to.

The decisions I make about my work, are usually made by examining how I feel about what I am doing. If I feel good about a sketch, then I feel that I am making progress. I decided that using bottles would be a good material to use, because it's another way for recycling plastic. That was the only recycled material I used. I felt that because that was a pretty large bottle, that it would go and sit in a landfill somewhere just like the other plastics.

After making a list about things that I could do, I decided to go with making butterflies using 2 liter bottles. I felt that butterflies are animals that people like to see when the spring comes around, and something that you might not wonder about how they're affected by pollution. You get to see butterflies of all different shapes, sizes and colors. I think by doing this project, I've realized how so many things can be affected by pollution, and how those things may be some things that you just won't realize how much it meant until it's gone.
