For my capstone, I inquired about the lives of the homeless men in Philadelphia. I wanted to know why people treat the homeless like trash or lesser citizens. This question could really only be answered through my own reflection of my experiences from the past year, but there isn’t just one simple answer. I spent a lot of time volunteering at a shelter for men who have been homeless for over a year and were recovering from addictions. I spent a lot of my time playing checkers with the men and I learned so much about the issue with being closed minded in modern society. I was a stranger who came in with a camera, and they were happy to meet me and tell me about their lives. They made lots of jokes at my expense, but I really appreciated there welcoming towards me.
For my presentation portion of this project, I created a website. This site holds all of my best photography from the past year and a page is dedicated to the time and photos I have from the shelter. This website is the stepping stone to my career as a photographer. I strive to continue working and taking better images that can tell their own stories. I hope you enjoy the work I have done as much as I do.
Ronald Harper Capstone
Hello, My name is Ronald Harper. I am a senior at the Science Leadership Academy and for my senior project I decided to talk about my work during my junior/senior year mentoring for a youth mentoring fitness program called “Youth mentoring Partnership”. I’ve been apart of this organization for over a year and every moment has impacted me greatly.
This is a program that is designated to build one on one relationships with children in empowerment communities across Philadelphia and surrounding areas. As a peer mentor for the program, I had to go through the training as if I was a child in the program, I had to go through the workouts, so I can built GRIT myself and I can walk the same walk and understand the effort the children I would be peer mentoring would be giving. I was assigned a child at the beginning of the program after I am finished my peer mentoring training. We work out every Wednesday from 4:30-6m, the goal of each workout is too make goals and reach them, finding the passion and perseverance to get through the trials, finding your edge and pushing through that. It teaches discipline, dedication, motivation and life lessons. More than a fitness program, I played a role model to these children who also have someone to talk too, confide in.

Amani Bey Capstone
Hello my name is Amani Bey and I decided to create https://feministsofsla.weebly.com/ . It is a blog for showcasing and discussing feminists and political issues in the SLA community. 2014 was a journey for me. Having to assert myself through college applications and the political climate of both school and the internet gave me a clear voice and helped me understand who I was. I realized that there was no platform to say what I needed to say and celebrate the amazing work that young feminists do inside and out of the SLA community. Over the course of second semester, I have researched and written about topics that interested me, most of which concerned race and gender, as well as interviewed students in my community. The blog contains art and writings from both myself and the student body. It is dedicated to creating awareness and I hope it lives on after I leave the SLA community.
Julian Makarechi- Capstone
My name is Julian Makarechi, and I am a senior at SLA. For my senior capstone I decided to organize an Ultimate Frisbee tournament with my fellow SLA Varsity captain, Brian Birkmire. This tournament was held in Oaks, PA and Edgley Fields on April 25th & 26th. It was a no brainer for me to incorporate Ultimate in my capstone because it has played a major role in my life, since freshman year.". With the help of my coach/mentor/principal, Chris Lehmann, I was able connect with many vital contacts that helped make my tournament successful. One of the first major steps I took was to create a website that detailed information about my tournament and a spot to register. Once I finalized all the specifics, I was able to announce my tournament at a captains meeting in March. In total, 28 teams signed up,for the 4 available divisions. Throughout the whole project I must have sent hundreds of emails about checks, field layouts, schedules, and team registrations. The two weeks before my event were extremely hectic and stressful because of everything from getting teams registered to creating schedules and laying out the fields. I had to make sure everything was in place, everything from having the right amount of cones for every field, at both locations, to making sure we had parents that could volunteer to bring food to the fields early in the morning were in place. While this project was a stressful because of some setbacks and difficulties, I am very proud of the product that Brian and I came up with. Since I would like to go into sports management, I feel like this tournament taught me a lot and gave me some experience.
