Let’s talk about the menstrual cycle! Menstruation, also known as a period, is a process women go through every month. Talking about this shouldn’t be a taboo! After all, there are about 49.6% of women globally and about 53.6% in Philadelphia. My Capstone project goal is to create awareness about what homeless women go through. These women might not have the option to buy either a meal or hygiene products. With limited access to feminine hygiene products, I decided to create care packages for these women. Even if my project didn’t go as planned, it turned out better than I thought. <3

Through a period of about five months, I worked on remodeling my home basement. I started with cleaning out space than followed up by planning and budgeting the renovation project. I engaged in producing something that I have long hoped to complete since the summer of 2019. It includes creativity, labor, design, and, last but not least, engineering skills. Unfortunately, with the appearance of Covid-19, I had slow progress. I had the idea of putting forward a project that would benefit my family even after I leave for college. I wanted to leave behind something that my brothers can look up too. It’s the first time I ever did something like this, but I learned a lot from my thinking process. I learned that having a “finished product” and a finished product are two different things. One is putting in the work and being satisfied with the effort put in. While having a finished product is attempting to hit every point and being content with the outcome according to the effort put in.

For my Capstone I combined two of my passions, Genetics and Engineering to create a website that parents can go on to look at certain traits that their unborn child could have. I used my knowledge of genetics to do the science portion of my site, aka the information that is given back to the user. I needed to learn HTML, a content language and CSS, a styling language, the engineering part, to complete my site so that was my first step. Through watching multiple hour long videos I began to pick up the basic concepts of both languages. From there I built my site into what it is now. My last step is to publish my site for others to use, which has been giving me trouble so for right now, the site lives on my computer. (This might get figured out later though!) Attached below are pictures of the home page of my website.

For my capstone I taught middle school children what ACE was. I’ve created different presentations with different types of projects that relate to ACE. ACE stands for Architecture, Construction Engineering. I’ve shadowed JMT and my middle school, Christopher Columbus Charter School, to learn and to teach about ACE. I want to teach middle school children about ACE because, since they are coming to age where they will start to choose a career, this allows them to understand and prepare them if they want to follow the engineering path. I’ve created different presentations that I present to students about the different projects and ways that we can make the projects simple but also fun to learn. This allows students to be more engaged in engineering. During the process of creating the projects, I thought about how children will be more engaged and ask questions while doing this project. Teaching middle school students about this encourages me to reach my goal and encourage more children. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X07UGjOOc8-kYd-WnmelVcCJJUhoxQSZg467DRw7bp0/edit?usp=sharing

What do a turntable, and Furby, and the White Stripes have in common? My project, Jack and Jill, began with summer research the summer after sophomore year. It incorporates engineering, art, and music, into a product that spoke on my experience and self. The Capstone I ended with is not the Capstone I began with, but it still turned out better than I could have planned. The literature I wrote follows my process through the year, as well as the engineering details. Attached is the final version of the document I created, and you can find photos and videos linked below. (The bibliography is in the document)
