Murder from the Skies

In english class we were told to make a short speech and later a movie about how about a topic we feel strongly about. I did electric factories and how they damage are ecosystem very strongly, I hope after watching this video you feel as strongly about the issue as I do.

Negative Space

A. Say I told you to draw a circle on a piece of paper and asked you to color the negative space, you'd only color the space around the circle and not the circle itself. That space is the negative space.

B. I found negative space by seeing everything around the object. It's a matter of where your focusing your eyes. I found the negative space in my cut out by removing all the positive.
In my still life drawings, I drew a contour of the objects and never any inside details, then colored everything outside of that contour.

C. It helps an artist to see negative space because you'll then realize what is and isn't part of an object. Positive space isn't all a drawing has to offer, there's much more depth, and a big part of that depth is the negative.

D. Seeing negative space helps enhance everything outside of an object. Personally I prefer to play with negative space over positive. It's taking a different outlook on what our eyes usually focus on first.

Negative Space

Negative Space Cut Out

Negative space is the area around an object. An easy way to think of it is the space that you can play around if an object was in the middle of a room. I found the negative space in the cut out drawing by doing the opposite shapes. If one shape was green on one side of the other it would be pink. In the still life I found the negative space by shading the empty space in with pencil so to appear empty. It helps an artist to see in negative space because when seeing the negative space it shows the contrast. It also helps the viewer of the painting see where things are and seeing if the space around it is full or empty. It gives effect to a painting. I think negative space in a drawing enhances the drawing because it enables the viewer to see contrast and it gives an extra dimension to the drawing. It also allows the viewer to see it in an abstract way.

Negative Space Reflection: Hersh

1. Negative space is the empty space around an object. It helps make the object look like it is actually there and makes it look more accurate if used correctly.
2. I found negative space in the cutout by placing the cutout pieces against the paper they were cut from like a mirror image, creating negative space and depth.
3. It is helpful for an artist to see in negative space because it gives them a better view and understanding of an object and portray it more accurately and realistically.
4. Seeing in negative space enhances drawings because it makes the drawings look better, more accurate, and gives them depth.

Anti - American Adoption Bill

In Mr. Kay's class we explored the ways to write a speech and ways that the speech makers uses logical fallacies. We had to pick a speech that we were most interested in. My speech is about the Anti American Adoption Bill, this bill has effected so many people and if was around in 2003. That same year that I was adopted, my mom and dad would not be able to adopt my brother and I. This speech is a protest to this bill.

Negative Space-Dylan McKeon

    A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative Space is the space around the main subject of the drawling. In the case of my still life drawling the negative space is the shaded part that is around the objects.

    B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

For my cut out drawling I found the negative space by using the dark shaded parts of the templet as the negative space and the light shaded parts of the templet as the positive space. For my still life drawling I shaded in the spaces around the drawling.

    C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist see the shape of the object and helps them prepare before drawling the details of the object.

    D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

It helps enhance drawings by letting me see the space around the subject which makes it easier to draw the shape of the object.

Negative Space-Nebil Ibrahim

A. Negative space is space around an object.
B.1. In my cut out I would  cut out the parts with different shadings as the barrier to define where to cut then since the picture was symmetrical. I placed it so that I used every other piece on one side of the paper. 2. For the still life drawing I drew the chair, shaded around it, and then erased the straight lines so it looked like I just shaded it.
C. It helps because it not good to use only one kind of perspective and it can make illusions.
D. It does because it makes what is there easier to see.

Negative Space Cut Out Project

Bringing you yet another project in Ms. Hull's 9th grade art class, we studied negative space. Negative space is simply the shape(s) that an object leaves in space when it is removed. We first sketched a negative space still life in three vignettes (seen below). This was the precursor to a simple negative space cut out project.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the shape that an object leaves in space when it is removed from that very space. If you were to place a ball in the middle of the floor, the sphere that is left when the space is shaded around is the negative space.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

In my cut out (seen below), the negative space was simply the inverse of the pieces I had already cut out and pasted onto my second sheet of paper. It was like placing the handmade pieces of a jigsaw puzzle back together. When sketching the still life, I simply drew the outline of the shapes I saw and shaded around them, erasing for finer lines where it was necessary.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps to see negative space so that the artist has a better understanding of the shapes that comprise his or her work.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

I certainly think it does. I think it's a good skill to have with any for of visual art because, when you practice negative space, it helps you see the shapes that are the foundation of your piece. Getting the basic shapes of a drawing can really help enhance the final turnout of the piece.

Negative space cut out.

Negative space is when you draw everything except the object. The object becomes the background and every thing else is shaded.

I found negative space in my drawing by by changing my perspective to see the shapes formed by the edges of the objects. In my cut out I just alternated the layers so that they matched up.

Artists use negative space to create interesting and different drawings they also use it in things like prints and stamps. It's helpful to be able to see things from many different perspectives.

Drawing in negative space can enhance drawings by giving a new perspective to the viewer and challenging them to see the object for what it is.

Negative/Positive Space - Andrew Roberts

Reflection:

A:  What is negative space?  Negative space is basically the outline of an object or objects, with no detail inside, and is background which also has no detail.  There are two colors:  one color is where there is something, the other is where there is not something.

B:  Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?  1:  The cut out was more of a positive/negative space combination.  The negative/positive boundary was used to show detail.  Being symmetrical, the drawing had every part negative, but half of the parts were on one side and the other half on the other.  2:  In my still life, I found negative space to be anything that was not the background.  The stools, the chair, and the other thingy were all white and everything else was black (I did not have time to shade everything).

C:  Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?  It helps an artist in the way they see a scene or portrayal.  It mainly helps one understand what is the foreground and what is the background.

D:  Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?  Yes, it does.  When one knows what is the background and what is the foreground, it is easier to know what to make the viewer focus on and what to kind of fade away.  When you can see what needs to be seen, oyu can make it more prevalent.

What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it).
Negative space is the area around the object. If you have apple against a white background, what you can see of the white background if the negative space.

Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

In my cutout, I matched the positive space to one color and the negative space to another, which helped me block the spaces and know where to cut. In my still lives I started with an object that I could use as a measurement tool and off of that main object I would create the other objects.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

The artist can then define their artwork and look at it and create it in different ways.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

I feel that negative space makes drawings look cool and more professional. They add something special to drawings.
