Temperance Moore Capstone

Posted by Temperance Moore in Capstone - Thompson - Wed on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11:58 am
My capstone ended up being totally different than what I was originally going to do in the beginning. After some things weren't working out with my first idea, and then my second idea, I was stuck. Seriously, for most of this capstone process, I was totally stumped. Since a capstone is supposed to benefit your community, I was thinking of ways I could benefit other people by doing things for them, like fundraising, community service, donating, etc. But I wasn't passionate about any of those things. I love giving and being able to help other people, but I realized that doing things like fundraising, and community service weren't really my forte. What I didn't realize was that I could benefit people simply by giving them what I had within myself, and what took me so long to realize this is that I didn't think I didn't have much to give. I'm passionate about music, and writing, and that's how my final capstone came out. I decided to do an inspirational spoken word, and I put it up on youtube (although it's private now, I plan to make it public once I copyright it). My hopes is that it will one day benefit people by inspiring them and uplifting them. That is the whole point of my capstone.

Below is just one of my spoken word videos.

Here are the links to my others:

Am I Beautiful Yet?

Beautiful.

Change Box

So, this bibliography was originally for my original capstone, so the sources aren't relevant to my final capstone. But the methods from these sources are. Even though they're about fundraising, for fundraising you need to be outgoing and confident, which played a big part in my final capstone. The only relevant source was my ministry leader because she was my mentor for my capstone, and she helped me throughout the whole thing.

Annotated Bibliography

  1. "CASE - Fundraising Fundamentals, Section 6.4." CASE - Fundraising Fundamentals, Section 6.4. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

http://www.case.org/Publications_and_Products/Fundraising_Fundamentals_Intro/Fundraising_Fundamentals_section_6/Fundraising_Fundamentals_section_64.html

This site gives really good strategies on fundraising. It talks about how to develop a fundraising strategy, pointing out that a fundraising strategy identifies financial as well as other expectations  of what I’m doing. I need a fundraising strategy to effectively prioritize my project, and target the resources I need to do that. It points out that one way to target your resources effectively is to know who your prospects are. Know who my prospects are will enable to me to target my efforts effectively.  It also includes what a fundraiser should look like, what I want to achieve, and the resources I can use to have a successful fundraiser.

2) Anatomy of a Successful Event. Digital image. Event Marketing. N.p., n.d. Web.

http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/c1/e0/8b/c1e08ba1508c359e44dd7cb8bab248a1.jpg

This is a photo of an anatomy to a successful event. It points out that an event is a system of elements working together to create a successful event to grow your organization. I can definitely use this photo to organize any events that I will have to fundraise. In the center of the photo is features, your event, and stemming from it are 4 categories: strategy, details, results, and promotions being the biggest one. Then, from those 4 categories stems other tiny little categories that need to be considered when figuring out an event. This photo points out important aspects to look at in order to have a successful event, and it will come in handy when I start planning mine.

3) Kluth, Brian. "Fundraising Methods for Christian Organizations/Ministries/Missions." (n.d.): n. pag. Kluth.org. Web

http://www.kluth.org/fundraising/12Month-Methods.pdf

This source focuses on fundraising methods for Christian Organizations specifically, and it also includes the typical results. I thought this would be pretty helpful considering that I’m fundraising for a Christian ministry, and since I plan for it take place in the church. It has all sorts of fundraising methods, and ideas. I like that the source gives you typical results for each method, that way I can know what will be a bigger turnout. So, I will definitely be using some of these ideas. While there are some ideas I will not be able to do, there are others that I can switch around and make it into my own.

4)"Fundraising For Women's Ministry." Fundraising For Women's Ministry. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

http://www.juliabettencourt.com/articles/fundraising.html

This is yet another source on fundraising, but it focuses on fundraising for a women’s ministry. I figured that I could use this considering that the ministry I’m in is only women. Not that praise dancing can’t include men, but mainly females do it. It talks about how churches give very little budget or none even to their women’s ministries. In our case, it’s not that our church purposely gives little budget to us, it’s just that the church budget itself isn’t that big, especially when they have bills to pay to keep the church running. A definite idea that I’m going to be using from this source is having bake sales because bake sales always have huge turnouts, or at least some type of decent turnout.

5) "Dancing in the Spirit, Foundation of Liturgical Dance." : Praise Dance Moves. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

http://www.liturgical-praiseworshipdance.com/p/praise-dance-moves.html

This source gives an overview of what praise dance is, how it is a form of liturgical dance. It talks about how different cultures and ethnic backgrounds around the globe do it, and how it starts revivals in churches. Although I already have a background of what liturgical dance is, I used this to refresh my memory because I got taught on it a long time ago. Before I went into what I was doing for my capstone, I wanted to give a background on what praise dancing is because not everyone know what it is. This source was very good at covering everything about praise dancing in a brief introduction.

6) "A-Z of Fundraising Ideas." A-Z of Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

http://www.cafod.org.uk/Fundraise/Fundraising-ideas/A-Z-of-fundraising-ideas

This is another source on fundraising ideas. I figured you can never have too many ideas. I’m not going to use them all but it’s just good to have a variety of ideas that I can choose from. I don’t want to stick to the same fundraising event. I do want to have different types of fundraising events because having the same one over and over can be a bore. I want to keep people interested, and in order to draw attention, and to keep  them coming, I have to be creative. I also like this source because it’s alphabetized.

7) "Successful Church Fundraising." Better Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

http://www.better-fundraising-ideas.com/church-fundraising.html

This is another source on having a successful fundraising in a church. As mentioned earlier,  sources like these are really helpful because that’s where I plan to have all my fundraising events. Like the other source, they have an alphabetized list of fundraising ideas for a church. Also mentioned earlier, it doesn’t hurt to have too many ideas because the more ideas I’ll have the more creative I can be with fundraising in the church. Not only does this website have fundraising event ideas for churches, but it also has it for sports, school, cheerleading. So, it’s a pretty well-rounded website.

8) "Start Your Free Online Fundraiser." Free Online Fundraising & Crowdfunding Website. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

http://www.youcaring.com/

I mentioned in my proposal that I was planning to also start up a website for people to donate, as well as having fundraising events. This website is a place that I can do it on. I figured that if people wanted to donate, but couldn’t because either they couldn’t make it or were away, they could donate online. This doesn’t only have to be for people who know, but for also people who don’t know us. We don’t want our ministry to just happen in the church, we want to be able to present in different places. I think that making a fundraising website would help to get us out there, make us known to people who maybe desire to have praise dancers to present at their church.

9) Interviews

Interviewing the women apart of our ministry could also help with people donating. I was thinking that I could set up videos of interviews to get their perspective on what they desire to have in our dance ministry. I could use those videos, and request to have them played one day on Sunday, so that people can see our perspective, and can understand why it’s important to have equipment to practice with. I could use this as a way to draw people to donate to whatever fundraising event I plan to have, as well as the fundraising website I plan to build.

10) Ministry Leader

Throughout this whole thing, my ministry leader can be a huge help and source because she’s a lot more experienced in the leadership area. This capstone is going to require a lot of leading because I’ll be organizing fundraising events, and I’ll basically just have to be stepping up a lot more than usual. My ministry leader can be big help in teaching this. That is also why she is going to be my mentor for this capstone as well. I know that by doing this, I will be learning leadership skills as well, and that is why she is considered a source as well.

Digital Story- How Has Your Faith Shaped You?

Posted by Temperance Moore in Storytelling - Rami - C on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 8:49 am
My digital story is just about the faith that people have in Jesus, how that affects them as people, and how they apply their faith to their daily lives. The whole point of this was to show a "real" side of church-goers, like a behind the scenes, not just what's portrayed on the outside. A lot of people assume all churches are the same, and that the people who go their are too, but that's not always the case. The audience can gain whatever they want from viewing this video, everyone is different so each person will probably gain something different from the video, therefore I don't have a set hope for what I want people to get out of it.

So....for whatever reason my upload keeps failing. I'm just going to post the link. It's just another click, not too difficult.

" This article is about travel space balloon that plan.   Also the article said, "The landscape is the same as that offered by Virgin Galactic , but travelers from World View will not experience the absence of gravity, even though both tours last about two hours. This may be the reason that, compared to 250,000 euros for the company to fly with Richard Branson, balloon travelers only have to shell out more than 54,000 euros.Poynter explained in an interview with Space.com, which are still studying different launch sites. Among the leading candidates are Arizona and Las Vegas. Similarly, wanted to claim the role of the balloons in science "for decades," so it is "a very established market."

Posted by Temperance Moore in Spanish 3 - Manuel - Y on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 9:27 pm

Book Review: Snow by Tracy Lynn

20131025_043832
20131025_043832
About the artwork:

For my creative piece I chose to remake the book cover of the book Snow by Tracy Lynn, which is the book that I reviewed. In the artwork, I drew the evil stepmother holding a sleeping Snow White in a glass ball. Inside the glass ball is falling snow. The evil stepmother holding the glass ball with Snow White in it, represents that she has a hold of Snow's life. Snow encased in the glass ball represents that she's trapped, and she's asleep from the evil stepmother's spell over her. Lastly, the falling snow in the glass ball represents who Snow is, and how she got her name.

There have been many retellings of Snow White. In fact, there have been so many retellings of it, that it’s hard to choose which one to read. Some retellings aren’t that much of a retell of the original story, and some are based loosely on it. Snow by Tracy Lynn is in between that.  Tracy Lynn is the author of many young adult novels. Before she wrote young adult novels, she published adult horror stories under her real name, Liz Braswell. Although she is known as Liz Braswell, her full name is Elizabeth J. Braswell. She chose the name “Tracy Lynn” for her young adult novels. She also produced many video games. A few years later, she published The Nine Lives of Chloe King series under a second faux name, Celia Thomson. Liz Braswell was born in Birmingham, England. She graduated from Brown University, and she earned a degree in Egyptology. She is currently married, and she lives in East Village. Her books, The Stolen, and The Fallen won the ALA Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers. The Fallen also won the NYPL Books for the Teen Age award.

Tracy’s book, Snow, gives the same scenario of the real Snow White; Mother dies, father raises child all by himself until he marries, the woman he marries turns out to be an evil witch, the witch wants to eat Snow’s heart, etc., but it adds a twist. The storyline goes like this: There once was Duke and Duchess, who needed an heir to the throne, preferably a son. And so, the duchess had a child, and unfortunately she died from the childbirth. Instead of a baby boy, this left the Duke alone with a baby girl who he was not happy about. Wanting to have nothing to do with her, her father ignored Jessica for almost her entire life, leaving Jessica under the care of her maids. Like Snow White, Jessica is very fond of small animals, and found comfort in them. Soon after, Jessica’s father finds a beautiful duchess to marry, but looks can be deceiving. The duchess has some evil plans of her own, and is willing to threaten Jessica’s life to achieve them. This story takes place in Wales, which is a country that is apart of the United Kingdom, and it also takes place in London. The Author uses languages that has a mixture between English and Scottish accents in the book,”...Ah, a girl, Gwen. It’s a long story. A lass from the pub the next town over.” Her use of language gave me a really good idea of how the characters sounded. “... “What, this?” With a violence unnatural to him, Alan viciously kicked the bag, scattering the coins all over the floor. “I cannae make songs out of this rubbish!”...”

One of the major themes that the Author focused on in the book is how society views women. In the book, the evil stepmother’s main focus is being the most beautiful woman of the land, and maintaining her youth. During a conversation with Jessica (Snow), she shared her thoughts on what women were only wanted for in society, “....Society only has two uses for women, remember that. Beautiful young girls and mothers.”..... “Be one or the other, or both, but not neither. No one wants an old hag. Or a trollop.” What she is saying is that society will only accept you if you fit into their criteria. I admired how the Author used a real world issue, and placed it in a fairytale. This made the book connect easily to the real world even though it’s fiction.

Honestly, what sparked my interest in even getting a Snow White book was seeing the movie, Snow White and the Huntsman. The movie was so good that I developed this Snow White addiction. So, I went book hunting on Amazon for a Snow White book, and that’s when I came across the book Snow. I didn’t know what to expect from the book, but I did want an action packed-thriller, a lot like Snow White and the Huntsman. It didn’t quite meet that criteria, but I enjoyed it anyway. The last thing the book had was violence. The way Snow White was portrayed in Snow White and the Huntsman, was not the way Liz portrayed the Snow in this book. The Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman stood up to the queen, and fought her. The Snow in the book ran away from the queen when she discovered that the queen was going to murder her. “...What if the duchess tried to kill her again? Snow panicked for a moment at what she had begun, images of the tall and frightening duchess looming over her with knives and candy-sweet smiles.” Instead, the book had a quirkiness to it, and that’s what intrigued me the most about Snow. “Her fingers entwined in his hair and fathers, and she remembered the ravens she used to watch from her window...”

I recommend this book to anyone of any age, who enjoys fantasy. Whether you are someone who is looking for a fun, quick read, or if you just need a book for school. Liz does a fantastic job by engaging you in the book, and making you feel like you are on the adventure with the main character, Jessica. Snow will not disappoint you. It will take you back to a victorian aged world, full of magical surprises, a little twist, and a bit of romance.

“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.” ― Albert Einstein.

This past school year in English and History, I gained a better understanding about what is currently going on in the world. I learned that there is so much stuff going on around us that we are unaware of. Not only did I learn what’s going on around us, but I also got a better insight on the use of language. Language can be your own unique way of communicating. Whether it’s art, poetry, making up your own words, or just speaking how you grew up speaking, language can be versatile. Overall, I gained a better understanding of what is going on in the world around me.

One of the things we learned about this year in History was the Renaissance. The Renaissance  involved a lot of art. Artists in the Renaissance used art to express themselves, or to express their admiration of people and places. Art in the renascence was a big form a language for the artists who made them. It was their way of communicating to the community. On one of my Renaissance assignments I wrote, “Artists discovered how to paint in three dimensions, bringing realism to their subjects. They broke away from the religious traditions of the medieval world, and the created new genres of art.” I got this from the research that I did on the Artists in the Renaissance. The artists communicated to the community by catching their eye with new genres of art. Here is one of my Renaissance assignments. This affects the world today because many of these Artists became famous legends. Today, the world is inspired by them because they made a statement saying that, you can speak through art.

"Poetry is the universal language" -William Hazlitt.

Another form of language is poetry. One of our units this year in English was a poetry unit, and in this unit we had to create different types of poetry. Throughout this unit I got to communicate my thoughts and feelings into poetry. Actually poetry is one of the ways that I communicate my feelings, and also just writing. They are forms of my language because I’m free to write them however I please. I can say what I want, and not have to worry about what people may think. Here is one of my lines of poetry, “My heart was calmly waiting for me recognize what was right in front of my eyes...”. You can read more here. At the end of the unit we had a poetry festival where everyone shared their poems. Each poem was different because everyone had their own way of writing, and that’s what makes poetry a universal language. Another example is English journal #21 where I wrote about my opinion on having a mask. Society doesn't always allow us to speak freely, so we use art to speak for us.

We also had language unit in English. In this unit we had to write a language autobiography about our own language. In my autobiography I talked about how I purposely make an effort to have perfect grammar, because I don’t want to be judged by society. Of course I still make mistakes, but I purposely correct myself. In my autobiography, I stated, “I let the use of grammar control me so much, that when I say something incorrectly I automatically feel ashamed. I get embarrassed and I come down even harder on myself. At other times I’m afraid to speak up because I’m afraid of how I will sound, that I may not sound right, or that I won’t make sense.” I came to the realization that language is whatever you want it to be, not what society wants it to be. This year in English helped me realize that one of the ways the world defines you is by how you speak.

Not only did I get a better understanding about language, but I also learned that You have to step out of your comfort zone to embrace change. In English, we had to make a podcast called “Crossing Boundaries.” In this podcast we had to interview someone who crossed a boundary, and it could be any boundary. My interviewee was crossing the boundary of harshness to sensitivity. In the interview, the interviewee stated, “I had to learn how to be more sensitive. See, I was cut throat, I was told to be honest......and I was even honest if it hurt people, and I really didn’t care.” Being harsh was my interviewee’s “comfort zone”, and it wasn’t until something traumatic in her life happened that she decided to change by becoming more sensitive. After she stepped out of what she was comfortable with, she was able to humble herself by being sensitive.

Another assignment we did in English was a descriptive essay. In my essay I described my experience going house hunting. My mom and I had never moved, so it was pretty new going house hunting. Moving involved adjusting to our surroundings, and we didn’t know where we were going to move. We had to step out of our comfort zone anyway, and take a leap. Since we were ready for whatever we would come across, it was easier for us to embrace moving. Now, because we did step out of our comfort zone, we moved, and adjusted to our surroundings just fine. To embrace change in this world, you have to take a leap.

In conclusion, my knowledge and understanding has definitely expanded in History, and English. I’m very much aware of what’s going in the world that I was never aware of before. I’ve learned so much about current events in the world, past events, and things that happened in history that affect us today. I’m very grateful that I’ve learned what I’ve learned this year. Many of the things that I’ve learned, I will continue to carry with me. Like Dr. Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” I know that carrying the things I’ve learned with me will open many doors for me to go many places.

English Journal #41

When was the last time you were forgiven? And is it possible to forgive even if you've suffered from other people?

I think it's possible to forgive even if people suffer from other people. It's not easy, but it is a choice. Forgiveness is necessary to move forward because if you haven't forgiven someone that means you're dwelling on things that are in your past. How can you move forward if you're so busy looking back? All you will do is trip.

English Journal #21

What is your mask?

My mask? I don't know. There is nothing that I'm keeping inside that people should know. It's none of their business anyway. Why must they know? Whatever I'm suffering with stays between God, and I. And, if I choose to tell someone I can trust.
My mask? Does it have to be called a mask? Is it only a mask because I'm not telling people how I feel? They don't need to know.
So, my mask? I don't have one.

Q3 Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Temperance Moore in Geometry - Thompson on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 9:49 pm

This project relates to the world in many ways. One way it relates to the real world is in architecture and design. Contractors really do the things that we did for a living. They make blueprints of the building that they are making changes to and they measure everything. Then they take that, and they start making real renovations to the house that they are working on. They use the same math and technique as well. Even people who actually need to build a house or remake one probably uses the techniques that we used. Basically everything that we learned is used in real life by people who really do this type of stuff.

The most exciting portion to this project was actually going outside because we never do that. The least exciting portion to this part was also going outside because it was really cold. Also it was annoying how my measurements came out differently each time so I didn't know which one was right. I also didn't like the google maps part because the tutorial link wasn't working. So I didn't know how to submit the heights of my group's buildings. Other than those minor things, the project was fine. It helped a lot to know how to calculate my measurements. If I didn't it probably would have been harder since that was basically the bulk of the project.

I learned the different methods that can be used to find the heights of buildings. I didn't know that you could use a picture of something to find the hieght of a building (known as the picture method). I would have never thought about that. I also learned that you should check to see if your height is accurate because not every method gives you the accurate height. I got a better understanding about the mirror method as well. For a more accurate height, it's best that you don't lean towards the mirror. That would help with a more accurate height.

Language Autobiography 2013: The Controlling Effects Of Grammar

Posted by Temperance Moore in English 2 - Block on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 7:03 pm
This unit was basically about how different types of languages are looked at. We read stories about about the lives of real people, and how they had to change their language because they had to speak a certain way in order to get treated fairly. In all of the stories we read, every character had to learn english because learning english was what was expected of them. My language autobiography, is about how much power and control grammar has and how that affects me personally.Throughout this unit, I learned that language really does affect the way people look at you.

Society gives grammar the power to control us. It wants us to be pressured into having excellent spoken grammar and speech. If we do not have that, then we are criticized. Marilyn vos Savant says, “Be able to correctly pronounce the words you would like to speak and have excellent spoken grammar.” This is the way society wants us to speak. It’s because of this that I ruminate a lot on what I say, what I’m going to say, and how I say it. “Grammar is a piano I play by ear. All I know about grammar is its power.”(Joan Didion). Grammar has power over a lot. It can affect the way people look at you. If you’re interviewing for a job, and you don’t have the best grammar chances are you won’t get hired. Grammar gives you power also. It can give you the power to attract people when you’re giving a speech. It can get you to higher places especially if your grammar is what society expects of you. Although these quotes are true, the only reason grammar has power and the ability to control us, is because we let it.

“Grammar, which knows how to control even kings.”(Moliere). What Moliere is saying is that grammar controls everything. It controls the way some of us think and the way some of us speak. I can attest to this because it has definitely controlled my thought process. Occasionally, I make mental notes about what to say in the correct grammar the next time I speak to someone when I don’t say it correctly the first time. I even correct myself out loud. For example, one day in spanish class I was confused on how to conjugate a certain word. So, I got up out of my seat to go and ask my spanish teacher. He was sitting at his desk, talking to a student teacher when he looked up at me. “Yes dear?” He said with a welcoming smile. “Um...” I started to say. I wasn’t sure how to ask him the question. I wasn’t sure how to start it off, and I was afraid that I wouldn’t use the proper grammar. “Don’t you drop the ‘e’, and add the ‘i’?” I asked. “Yes.” He nodded and turned to continue his previous conversation. Walking back to my seat I thought, “Shoot! I wasn’t supposed to say ‘don’t you’. I was supposed to say ‘wouldn’t you’.” After realizing that I said the improper use of  grammar, I began to feel embarrassed and ashamed. Sitting back down I corrected myself again. This time out loud. “I wasn’t supposed to say ‘Don’t you’. I was supposed to say ‘Wouldn’t you”. Oh my gosh!” I let the use of grammar control me so much, that when I say something incorrectly I automatically feel ashamed. I get embarrassed and I come down even harder on myself. At other times I’m afraid to speak up because I’m afraid of how I will sound, that I may not sound right, or that I won’t make sense. I’m also afraid that will affect how people look at me. I get this way because I don’t want people to look at me as “the girl who doesn’t have correct grammar” or “the girl who doesn’t speak right”. I want them to look at me as “the girl with perfect grammar”, “the girl who has no flaws in her speech”. So, I make it an effort to make sure that my grammar is perfect. And no, it’s still not perfect but I still try. Although I consider my grammar pretty well,  I do make mistakes sometimes. “Look at them people.” I pointed to a group of kids doing silly stunts and tricks. I was walking down the street with my friend when we saw them. “I mean look at those people.” She looked at them and laughed.

I’m so used to correcting myself that sometimes, when someone says something grammatically incorrect, I silently correct them myself. It’s not that I judge how people speak because I don’t at all. They are free to speak however they wish. Especially if that’s who they are. I just do it to help myself. Only so that I will know what to say when I speak to someone who has the mindset that you need to speak a certain way. Another example is when my mom and I were in the car, and she was talking about how much the damage to her car was. “Five hunned..” She said in a loud, silly voice. I automatically interrupted her, “Do you mean five hundred?” I made sure I emphasized the word “hundred”. She just looked at me and laughed. I only corrected her because I really dislike the word “hunned”.  Although grammar is something I strive to be perfect in, there is one type of language that I don’t have to be perfect in. It’s my own type of language. I use words or sentences like, “durp”, “salty grits”, and “you’re doing the most”, when I’m playing around and because it’s fun. I believe at some point anyone should have some type of fun with their language. Personally for me, fun with my language is making up words. What makes it fun is that I know people can’t criticize me with that.

Keystone Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Temperance Moore in World History - Block on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 11:57 pm
                                                            Introduction

In our history project we had to write three monologues, each in different perspectives, about the different views on the Keystone XL Pipeline. The Keystone XL is a pipeline system that transports tar sands oil which is a synthetic crude oil. It was developed by TransCanada and they are currently working to build it. They plan for it to run from Canada to Texas. The Keystone XL Pipeline has started a lot of controversy on whether it should or shouldn’t be built. In my monologues, I tried to put myself in different perspectives rather than just one. I was three different people, Joe Mann, Amanda Leslie,Tommy White, and they all had different problems. Joe Mann can’t seem to get a job but then he hears about this opportunity to work on the Keystone XL. Amanda Leslie is strongly against building the Keystone XL and wants to get rid of it. And Tommy White is already working for the Keystone XL but he’s sick of it. What I got from writing these monologues is looking on both sides of the Keystone Pipeline. It helped me understand how in some ways I can see why republicans want this and other ways I can see the harm in having it. So, with that I can understand why there is such a huge controversial argument going on. I hope you enjoy reading them!

Who’s Hiring?

Monologue #1: Joe Mann

(Sitting in his kitchen at the breakfast counter. He’s talking on a small flip phone.)

Uh. Hello? Oh, yes..Hi. My name is Joe Mann...and I was wondering if you were hiring?....How old am I? 36...Where do I come from?.....What do you mean?....Ohhh what job do I come from....um well I haven’t been employed for a year. I’ve been living off of my parents....I am experienced...I just haven’t been working....I’m good at typing, you know um computer work and stuff....Filing? Filing what?....Well I can learn....what? You’re not hiring?...So why did you just ask me all these questions?....Can’t you just interview me?...no...ok...Thank you, bye-bye.
Ugh. I need a drink.

(Walks to a bar a few blocks away from his house. He continued thinking about where to work)

Can I have a Bud please. Thanks.
(Overhears a conversation between three men about the keystone pipeline.)

Keystone pipeline....hey...yeah you....what are they hiring or something? Oh Yeah? How much do they pay you?....Oh but they’re giving a lot of job opportunities to people? Yeah I need a job. You got connections? Yeah I’d like their number....Thanks.
(A young man sits down next to him. He overheard the conversation and he tries to talk Joe out of it.)
I don’t want that job? What do you mean? I need a job, you don’t know my situation. It’s not promising? What do you mean it’s not guaranteed I’ll get a job? Oh it’s not guaranteed I’ll keep it? What do you mean it’s temporary. You know what how about you just mind your business. You don’t know how badly I need a job. You’re talking nonsense. No one was even talking to you. I don’t need your dumb warning. What are you talking about? The guys over there were just saying how republican leaders and other pipeline supporters offered up many jobs from Keystone XL  and that it will create anywhere from 20,000 to 500,000 jobs. That’s plenty of opportunities. I know what your problem is....yeah...I do. You just want as many opportunities for yourself and so you’re making up stupid stories to run people off. Yeah, whatever. Go tell your myths to someone else.
(Thinks to himself)
Shoot. What am I going to now? I hear about this pipe thing that’s offering all these jobs and then someone comes and gives me different information. Despite my behavior...I kind of believe him. I don’t want to because it would make it so much easier if for me to make my decision. Then again...maybe it’s ok if the job is temporary...that’s still money....and I’ll just look for another job while I’m working. That’ll work right? Geesh...I just need a job.

I Can Do It On My Own

Monologue #2: Amanda Leslie

(Amanda is laying with her back on the couch and her arm on her forehead)

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. I can hear the clock as I lay here...thinking. Thinking about what life would be like if whoever hadn’t thought up this ridiculous idea to make a pipeline, carrying oil. Oil! Like we haven’t enough already...ok well maybe we don’t have it but other countries do. Can’t we just continue to keep buying it from them? I mean why can’t they just make peace already. I personally think that buying oil from another country is way better than wasting all this time and money to make a pipe and fill it with oil, that could really harm us environmentally. I thought our country could do better than that. So I want to be the change since nothing is getting any better. The more they try to make it better, the worse everything gets. And I know exactly what I’m going to do. I’m going to protest and make a huge scene to let everyone know that I’m serious about keeping our environment safe. I’ll recruit people that are on my side. We’ll start a rally! We’ll camp out next to the pipeline and stand in the bulldozers way. We’ll get their attention. We’ll make a public announcement that will be so loud, the astronauts will hear it in space! We will be global. Oh, I’ve got to call Jessie and tell her of my wonderful plan!
(Dials Jessie’s number on her house phone)

Jessie?....Oh hey... it’s me....Amanda?.....Ohh hahaha you’re such a joker. Listen, I have the most genius plan to stop that ridiculous keystone pipeline act. I wanted to start a rally. We could camp out next to the pipeline, make public announcements and-.....Oh no, no Jessie you don’t understand this is a great plan.....but it’ll stop them dead in their tracks....why don’t you have a good feeling about it? I can assure you we’re doing the right thing here. I feel like this is what I’m supposed to do....well how do you expect anything to happen if you’re just laying on your butt all day watching the food network?....No, Jessie...I didn’t mean it like that it’s just-....Jessie no, I’m sorry...Jessie (Other line clicks)....Jessie?

(Sighs) Great. Jessie is my best friend....I’ll make it up later. Fine, if she won’t do it, then I’ll call Mike.....no. I’ll do this on my own and that’ll show Jessie what she’s missing. She’ll see the huge difference I’ll be making and practically be begging to join me. (Takes out a piece of paper and a pen. She starts to write the speech she plans to announce.) Citizens of Canada, I’m here to inform you about the Keystone Pipeline. As a child I’ve always wanted a peace of mind about our earth, but it was hard. I was only 8 and I was already getting gray hairs (Laughs). It would make me sick. My only dream was that the earth would be a better place. I would always wish that before I blew out the candles each year on my birthday. Look now. I guess wishing didn’t  do any good. Listen I know it’s not Disneyland, dreams don’t always come but that doesn’t mean they can’t come true! If you want to do something, then get your butts up and do something! Who’s with me? We’ll start right now. We’ll petition and boycott, we’ll do whatever it takes. (Amanda finishes her speech, sits back on her couch and thinks to herself) We’ll beat this, and even if it means me going this alone....I’ll beat this. I know I will.

Same’ ol Same ol’

Monologue #3: Tommy White

(Tommy is on an open space of land. There are piles dirt, bulldozers and working men everywhere. Tommy is shoveling.)
Everyday is the same. Same digging, shoveling, building, shoveling, digging, building. I can’t stand it but I need this job. So many people are starting a controversy over it. Some people are against and they’re saying how dirty it is and how the jobs aren’t promising. I got this job before the pipeline was being built. The other people who are for it are saying how it’s cheaper and reliable, and we won’t be dependent on other countries for it. All this protesting and boycotting. Every time I turn on the t.v commercials come on every 10 minutes and do you know what they’re about? The stupid Keystone pipeline. The point of going home and relaxing is to get away from work, not coming home to it. I’m just sick of it all. Honestly....I don’t really care about any of it. I don’t know what to believe. I just need this money. How did I get caught in this mess anyway? I keep thinking about how people are saying the jobs are temporary. I mean I know I’ve been here for a long time but what about after it’s over? I try to shrug those thoughts off. We’re all doing it for the money anyway. In the meantime I’m just going to keep wasting my breath doing the same thing everyday, at least I’m getting paid for it...for now at least.

Appendix

1) Arguments against the Keystone XL Pipeline say that it encourages production of dirty crude from oil and it would threaten sensitive lands and it’s water sources.

“Encourages production of a dirty sort of crude from oil sands and it would threaten sensitive lands and also water sources along it’s route.”

2) President Obama turned down the proposal of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

3) Republicans and other people who support the pipeline stated that the Keystone XL would create anywhere from 20,00 to 500,000 jobs.

“Republican leaders and other pipeline supporters have offered up a wide range of claims about how many jobs Keystone XL (ultimately a temporary construction project) will create—anywhere from 20,000 to 500,000.”

4) A Cornell University argued that the Keystone XL would create about 5,000 to 6,000 jobs over three years and most of them would be temporary.

“A Cornell University study argued that the project would create fewer than 5,000 jobs and could cause job losses in some parts of the country. The State Department predicted it would create about 5,000 to 6,000 jobs over three years, most of them temporary.”

5) Tar sands oil requires harming the environment in order to make transportation fuel.

“Tar sands oil is a high carbon fuel strip-mined from beneath Canada’s Boreal forest. Fuel from tar sands represents an increasingly significant portion of the fuel used in cars in the United States. To extract oil from tar sands, companies must destroy fragile forest ecosystems and then use a very energy-intensive upgrading and refining process to turn that oil into transportation fuel.” "Friends of the Earth." 6) President Obama permitted TransCanada to build the Keystone XL after he rejected it.

”On March 22, 2012, President Obama bowed to Big Oil by issuing a memorandum and executive order to federal agencies to expedite the review of Keystone XL’s southern segment, completely backtracking on his previous basic commitment to a transparent and full review of TransCanada’s pipeline. The president pledged to “cut through the red tape” and “get it done” -- as if following bedrock environmental laws were a nuisance instead of a necessity.”

Descriptive Essay, When one door closes another one opens.

Posted by Temperance Moore in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Did you ever have your heart set on something that you wanted really bad? Remember that feeling?  That feeling when you had so much hope that you were going to get it but you felt it wasn’t for you? That feeling when you felt like you were so close, you could just reach out and grab it...but then it slipped between your fingers. You didn’t get what you were hoping for. Know that feeling? I do. Maybe it wasn’t meant to happen at that time or maybe not at all. Maybe it wasn’t meant for me, I ponder in those thoughts.

It was a beautiful sunny morning. I’d been excited for this day all week and it  had finally come. There was so much I expected this house to have. I just knew it was going to be the one. The one that my mom and I were finally going to get for us, just us. We headed on our way down there with my mom’s best friend. The real estate agent wasn’t there yet, so we waited. In the meantime, we investigated the outside of the house.

“Wow, this is nice.”, my mom said. The outside of the house had a white picket fence with a latch, followed by a cement pathway that led up to cement stairs, where a white door greeted you. On each side of the cement pathway there was green grass and bushes. Just around the corner of the house there were wooden steps painted brown, that led to a beautiful balcony in the back. I could see tiny lights decorating the walls of it. It must’ve been from the old owners.

“I’m here!” said the loud voice of Emma Jean, the real estate agent. She unlocked the door. We stepped inside a porch first. The floors were wooden brown and the walls had a built in bookshelf. The walls were also wooden and painted green. We walked into the living room first. It was wide with light smooth wooden floors. The crumb ceilings were white and there was a slide-in door that led to the backyard.

I ran upstairs expecting to run into this huge hallway and big rooms. Since the downstairs was big, why not the upstairs? So, I ran upstairs and to my surprise, I stopped on a single square carpeted floor, with two small rooms on each side of me, and right in front of my face was a huge bathroom. That was it. That was the upstairs. My face went from a big smile to a confused stare. My mom came upstairs with the same expression on her face. I looked up at her with a disappointed look and she returned it with the same.

“You can make it work. I like it.” My mom’s friend said. My mom still looked unsure. She pulled me aside in private. “What do you think?” She said. I looked up at her, my face still disappointed, and I shook my head, “No.”

Those were one of many moments when I wished I hadn’t put my whole heart into this house being “the one” for my mom and I. Not only was this a big let down, but it was something that I was hoping and expecting would happen this summer and it didn’t. That didn’t necessarily mean something else wasn’t coming our way, another thing we both were believing and praying for.

“Look, I’m sorry but I just can’t give it to you for this price.” said the car dealer. He had a button-down shirt with a tie. It was neatly tucked into his dress pants.

“Why not? Isn’t it your job to do whatever it takes to make your customers happy? Isn’t that what your logo says?” My mom’s eyes pierced into his. He sat up straight, fixed his tie and said, “Yes, yes it is.”
“Then why can’t I have it for this price?” My mom said calmly. My mom and I had been in the car dealership building for hours. I wasn’t trying to get my hopes up after the last two car dealerships we’ve been too. We left disappointed every time. I still couldn’t help but have some hope left with this one. I always got my hopes up, I always set my heart on something, I could never help it because it’s just who I am. The dealer and my mom continued to go back and forth on what she could get the car for. I sat back, my patience was getting low.
“Ok. Come on Temperance, we’re leaving.” My mom said. Leaving? What? I thought. The look on my face confused. The dealer said nothing. There was nothing he could say, unless he gave in and gave the car to my mom for the price she wanted. I hung my head as we walked out.
“Wait!” The dealer was running towards us. “Look...ok maybe we can make...a deal.” He huffed, out of breath. My mom and I looked at each other with smug smiles on our faces. They did a lot more talking, a lot of negotiating, and a lot of paperwork signing but we came out of there with car keys and big smiles on our faces.
In the first story I was expecting something to happen that didn’t happen and in the second story something happened that I wasn’t expecting to happen. The house wasn’t what my mom and I had expected it to be and it was a little discouraging. Then to our surprise, we got a car that we weren’t even expecting. The significance of both these stories is that when one door closes another one opens. We didn’t get that house because there’s something better out there for us. We walked out of the two car dealerships I mentioned because there was a better car waiting for us at another car dealership. That is what I’m learning every time I feel like a door slammed shut in my face.

On tuesday we had a luncheon from las cascuelas. I was really excited for it and at the time I was really hungry to. I really enjoyed the food and my favorite was the rice. I didn't taste the milk but I did taste the juice. The juice had an interesting taste and it was pretty different. I never tasted juice like that and I was surprised because I thought it was taste something like fruit punch. All in all I really enjoyed the food.

Temperance, "Take me away", Music&Culture

Posted by Temperance Moore in English 1 - Kay on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Hello, my name is Temperance Moore. My culture is Christianity. Christians believe in God. We believe that there is only one God. As Christians we don’t really call it a “religion” but a lifestyle. The artist I chose was Sarah Kelly and the song I chose by her is called “Take me away”.  Sarah Kelly is a gospel rock artist. My history with this song goes back to when I was about 9 or 10. My aunt first introduced me to one of Sarah Kelly’s albums. She would play it out loud in the car and my two favorite songs on that album were “Matter of Time” and “Take me away”.

We loved Sarah Kelly and would listen to her all the time. The song “Take me away” is basically about how Sarah loves God a lot and she expresses how much he did for her. Also how she just wants him to take her away so she can just be with him. What moves me about Sarah are the lyrics in her music. To me they are so genuine and true. Just by listening to her music, I can tell she longs for that closeness to God, like that’s all she wants. Also there’s a story behind it all. To me it’s a story that I can relate to.

What also moves me is the fact that she’s not doing it for show; she’s doing it because she truly loves God. That’s what I really admire about her. This song is an important part of Christianity because it’s a Gospel song so it promotes God. Sarah Kelly is also a Christian who loves God so that’s also why it’s an important part of Christianity. This song shows Christianity because it’s talking about God. Not only is the song based on God but also the person who sings it is a true Christian. The song “Take me away” represents the life a Christian, the life of Sarah Kelly.

Temperance Moore: Q2

Posted by Temperance Moore in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 28, 2011 at 11:56 am
In the making of my slide I learned that it didn't have to be more than one slide, not only because we were only supposed to do one slide but also because slides are short, simple and to the point. Reading the tips from Presentation Zen helped me to make my slide into what it is now. I didn't get anything from the internet I just used pictures of me and other people from off my computer. I chose the saying in the middle because it expresses how I am, mistakes don't make me depressed they just help me learn that I need to do something better and I just continue to be happy and move on with my life.

¿Qúe Día es Hoy?

Posted by Temperance Moore in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:50 am
In order to learn the days of the week, you will need to know how to say the days of the week in Spanish and know what days they are. Unlike English, the days of the week in Spanish aren't capitalized and the week starts with Monday instead of Sunday.
*miércoles and sábado are the only two days that have accents on top of them

If you are to tell someone what day of the week it is and what day it is tomorrow, here is a way you can say it:

Hoy es lunes. Mañana es martes.
Hoy es martes. Mañana es miércoles.
Hoy es jueves. Mañana es viernes.
Hoy es viernes. Mañana es sábado.
Hoy es sábado. Mañana es domingo.
A man asks a woman what day it is. He first says "disculpe" which means "excuse me" and asks the woman what day it is. The woman tells the man that it's Tuesday and the man thanks her.
