Taming Of The Shrew + Think Like A Man
As "The Taming of the Shrew" proves, the idea of romance as conquest has been around for centuries. In "Shrew," Katherine acts very stubborn towards Petruchio in the beginning of the book in order to get what she wants. She doesn't comply nor take orders from any man beside her father. In 2012 the movie "Think like a man" has all of the main male characters face the same issue with their partners because of this new book called “Act like a lady but think like a man” that came out revealing all of the dirty secrets men have to get what they want. Also in the movie most of the female characters play hard to get to avoid being a trophy.
Although both the movie and book touch on the expectation of a male/fe male in a relationship. They display the idea in totally different ways making it unique. For example in the play the expectation for a men is to have money to provide. Similar to the movie where the guys with more wealth are considered more attractive. This shows that, even today, audiences have the view that man are usually in control of the relationship which is true in some cases, but not all. The idea of men being in control still exist and so does the idea of women being seductive to get what they want is also true. Till this day both male and females still contribute to these idea that was programmed into our society a long time ago.
Katherine : “Now, If you love me, stay.”
Line # 209, Act 3 , scene 2
So in this scene Petruchio is invited by Tranio to join them for dinner. Then that's when Petruchio suggest that he can not join them for dinner because he has to leave. Grumio and Katherine proposal for him to stay the night and accompany them to dinner. Petruchio refused to take their offer and told them that he was content and was leaving. That's when Katherine stopped him and told him that if he love her to stay. Its very clear that she was trying to seduce Petruchio to stay by telling him that. This clearly show that even back then women seduce their men to try to get what they want. Which in this case didn’t go how she wanted to because he still left at the end.
In the movie “Think Like a Man” the character Dominic is in a relationship with this girl that is being stubborn. She is really making him earn her trust by making him go by this 90 day rule. Which is basically not letting him have sex until the 90 days are up. So in this scene Dominic chasing his partner to a stop because she was going home mad about the fact that he was reading the book too and knew her plan. He then tells her that the reason why he did that was because he loves her and actually cared about her. Once he told her that she smiled and gave him a kiss.
Compared to the play the movie did this scene very similar but differently. They both executed the same moral which is that people will seduce others to get what they really want. The difference between the book and movie is that in the book it was Katherine seducing Petruchio by saying now you stay if you love. In the other hand in the movie its was Dominic seducing his partner to get his ultimate goal which was getting with her in bed.
"Quote from Play"
(Act 5, Scene 2, line 200)
Petruchio : Come , Kate, we’ll to bed. We three are married, but you two are sped. Twas I won the wager, though you hit the white, and being a winner, God give you good night.”
This scene in my opinion was one of the best scene in the play. In this scene Petruchio made a bet with the other gentlemen in the room that his wife will obey his orders faster than their partners. Everyone laugh at him since they know that Katherine is so stubborn and doesn't listen to anyone. So the betted a high wager thinking that Katherine is going to be a no show. Anyways as you might of guessed Petruchio won the bet and Katherine showed up first when called for. All of this connects to the idea that men are in control in a relationship and shows that even back then men dominance was looked for in a relationship and was the norm at the time .
Before the proposal the main character was having a lot of issues in his relationship with his partner. They were getting involve in a lot of arguments and not getting along too well. So to not lose his partner he decided to propose to her. Which connects to the idea of men being in control of the relationship which was programmed into our society many years ago and still till this day is still intact.
Confessing To Emily
A few years back, when Soulja Boy and Bow Wow were trending, I fell for a girl.
This was back in fifth grade, when I was about 12. When I excelled in school and was consider the “teacher's pet” something really weird happened. It all started in the back of the room of Miss.Kuaffman home room class. The moment I laid eyes on this gorgeous girl named Emily I got this weird feeling in my stomach and got nervous when she made eye contact with me. I knew that it was love at first sight. She was really beautiful , had black silky hair with nice big brown eyes and a small frame to her. I never seen a girl like her before , and actually never seen her in school. That's when Miss Kauffman introduced her to the class.
The day after everyone was talking about her, especially the boys. My friends were all talking about how beautiful she was That's when hector ,a good friend of mine, said “I bet I can make her my girlfriend,” and we all laughed. Once he said that I was scared because I thought she was really pretty and wanted her to be mine. Whenever I made eye contact with her I felt so happy. After a while we went back to doing our usual things, playing pokemon cards and using tech decks( a tiny skateboard used by using your two fingers to do tricks and other things.) in the lunchroom.
Months passed and Hector still hadn’t made his move on Emily . It was about to be Christmas two weeks from now. I kept telling myself that I needed to talk to her and stop being a punk. But every time I was near her I got this weird knot in my throat that didn’t allow me to talk to her. I knew I couldn't talk to her face to face so I decided that I need to get my feeling across through her best friend ,Jessica. Jessica and I were good friends mainly because I didn’t find her attractive. As the day went on we finally reached our last period which was gym. This was a class I actually enjoyed in that school. Until we started running laps around the gymnasium.
Once we were there I asked Jessica “Does emily like anyone from our class?”
“ I’m not exactly sure but I know she thinks you're cute.” Jessica replied.
“Okay.” I said.
I did not expect her to say that Emily thinks I’m cute. Like what ?? I was so shocked like really she really thinks I am cute. My mouth open and my jaw dropped because of how shock I was to hear that.
“ I don’t no but I know she thinks you're cute.”
“ I don’t no but I know she thinks you're cute.”
“ I don’t no but I know she thinks you're cute.”
Her response kept replaying in my head without stopping. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It boosted my confidence from 0 to 100. I was finally ready to tell Emily what I thought about her. Unfortunately, the night before winter break I became too scared to tell her in person. So I decided it would be easier to write her a letter expressing my feelings.
I started my letter with “Dear Emily , this letter is just going to be me expressing my feelings towards you.” I thought to “myself that's weird don't say that to her she is going to be under the impression that I’m a weirdo.” So I didn’t write that on the letter, what I ended up writing was that I like her. Hours passed and I only had the introduction of the letter done. I’m going to tell you guys what I wrote for the first body paragraph. It goes something like this “ Emily you're such a beautiful girl just like the sun in the morning you can’t miss it. I really think you're cute and you are an awesome person to be around. You always make me laugh and stuff even though we don’t really talk that much. I really like going to school for two reasons, one to learn and two to see you everyday. You probably don’t think I’m cute or think I have cooties or whatever. But I just wanted to let you know that I like you a lot and think you are really pretty.” I was finally done. I made sure that my grammar was good and all of the other punctuation was good to go. Before placing the letter in the envelope I signed it at the bottom saying “love - Arsenio with xoxox.” Then I get myself ready to go to school.
Once I’m at school I realize Emily isn’t there and start getting worry. So I asked her friend Jessica if she seen her around.
Jessica said “no she is not here today why ?”
I replied with “nothing just asking because I have something to give her.”
Jessica then says “oh I see you like Emily don’t you ?”
I felt my cheeks heat up. I felt like a burning oven and got this knot feeling in my stomach and just walked away. Just thinking about Emily made me nervous. I walked away and never answered her question. My next class was my last period and I had to find a way to get this letter to Emily. I thought of mailing it to her house but for one I didn’t know her address and two she would just think I’m a weird if I knew her address. The time continued on and I still didn’t have an idea on how to get this letter to her. Five minutes were left in class so I came to the final decision of just leaving it under her desk. I was left with the question if she will ever reply to me or would she just ignore me because I have cooties.
In the end I never really got to find out if she ever liked me because after class Miss Kaufman told us that she has transferred. I was heartbroken because she meant so much to me. Once I got the news that day I cried myself to sleep thinking on why she would leave , why didn’t she feel the same way, was I not good enough for her. I would never be able to have these questions answered. . One good thing that I do know the letter wasn’t under the desk after break. Maybe she did receive the letter but never had a way to communicate with me. I mean who will ever know if she really like me.
Well after all of this occurred I came to the understanding that being in love is painful. Not just falling in love but the act of getting rejected by someone you love hurts. Similar to how in the book “ The Things They Carried” Rat one of the characters never gets a letter back from this girl he loves and the feeling of rejection that he had to deal with caused him to change as a person. I change a lot since this happen in many ways. The biggest change that occurred with me is that I became emotionless in a way. I try to avoid letting people know how I felt because people would try to take advantage of me. Ever since that day on I never handwritten a letter to a girl describing my feelings because I fear that I will never get a response back.Teens abusing drinking and alcohol
Do teens just do drugs to fit in? well the answer to that question is no. Adults often assume that teens start using drugs due to the social pressure from their peers. However, teens tend to do drugs to achieve happiness. Without knowing the consequences behind doing drugs and the effect it can take on your body and mental state. Drugs might help people achieve happiness, when it’s just a short term happiness not a long term happiness.
The behavior of a parent can highly influence their child choices and lead to drug use and addiction. Exposing their child to drugs is detrimental to the child's health and mental state. According to this article on teens.drugabuse.gov teens tend to consume drugs or abuse them when thier are feeling down. This is a quote describing the effect drugs have on the human body “Drugs take control of the system, causing large amounts of dopamine to flood the system. This flood of dopamine is what causes the “high” or intense excitement and happiness (sometimes called euphoria) linked with drug use.” When some teens use drugs or drink alcohol they try to get a buzz or a high from it. This high is usually produced by a natural hormone called dopamine. So when people take drugs is that they get this rush of dopamine into their system causing an imbalance of dopamine. This imbalance causes this short term “high”, but once this high goes away their system can never reach that happiness again. This causes people to become depressed and rely on drugs to be happy because of the imbalance in their system.
Teens around the world are highly influenced mostly by their environment when they are feeling down, also by their parents and friends. Either influence to succeed in life or abuse drugs/alcohol it all starts when they are having a rough time in life. According to this article published by Drugfree.org, a study shows that teens are most influenced by their surroundings when they are depress. “They see their parents and other adults drinking alcohol, smoking, and, sometimes, abusing other substances.” Since the teens are being exposed to drugs and their parents drinking alcohol there are more likely to do it. Which can lead teens into thinking that drinking alcohol or doing drugs is the key to achieving happiness. When in reality it's only going to have them happiness for a short amount of time.
There are many drugs that can make people happy, but the question is does it really make them happy? Drugs like Prozac and other antidepressants helps control levels of chemicals in your brain called serotonin, which are usually used to treat patients with depression , and other disorders. These drugs are mostly used for psychological condition like anxiety and shyness. In this article published by nytimes.com. The President council of Bioethics states “ that while antidepressants might make some people happier, they can also substitute for what can truly bring happiness: a sense of satisfaction with one's identity, accomplishments and relationships.” While antidepressants and other drugs might help people achieve happiness, it's not a long term happiness. This happiness is only temporary, because the purpose of this drug is to overflow your system with hormones that's already produced naturally. So once that dopamine gets out of the system the body will get back where it started from or maybe even worse. Although teens abusing drugs may only seem important to parents it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the well being of teens. Doing drugs does achieve happiness for people , but it does not achieve long term happiness. People who want short term happiness are most likely to do drugs. The only different is when taking drugs it causes people to have an imbalance that's unnatural that causes people to become happy for a short period. Also people can never reach that level of happiness on their own, only when on medication or on drugs. There are many drugs that might help people achieve happiness, but that happiness doesn't last forever and that's what most teens don’t consider when abusing such substance.

The journey to the United States and The challenges to face
The Format Matters
Random Acts of Senseless Violence By Jack Womack is written in first person perspective and in a diary format. This technique gives the story a deeper meaning into it. Since it is written in first person it's easier to follow and understand the story. The story is also written in diary format making the story more personal . Which makes the reader want to finish reading it. This leads into the reader feeling more connected to the main character because since it is in first person the reader can connect to it in a deeper level. Reason being the reader might of had the same experience as the main character making them feel more attached to them. All of this affects the book overall because it changes the perspective of how the reader should interpret the book. The format of writing in a diary is typically used to to describe how someone feels about their day. A famous example for this type of writing is the book of Anne frank where she talks about the Natzi and stuff. That book did a great job getting the readers attention and setting the mood of the story. Even though most of the readers never experience what she did the author was able to use the emotion fear to connect the reader the the main character. By this I mean that since not everyone experiences the same thing, the author tries to connect the reader to the story by using an emotion everyone has experienced before like fear. I say fear because everyone when they were younger had fear towards something either it being the dark or monsters.
on page 85 The main character name is Lola. Lola is at her friends katherine house. They are talking about how their school day went and stuff. Then they start looking at magazines about clothing. After that they start talking about what's the worst thing that have ever done in their life. Later on Lola wrote in her diary “We kissed longer and it was nice but that was all. She smiled. How was that? I asked.” This quote connects to the thesis because it engages the reader's emotion. The author uses emotion as a way from him to connect the reader to the book. By using emotion the author makes it easier for the reader to feel more attach to the book. Imagine the author just describe something that you never done before you wouldn't really be able to connect to it. Thats why the author uses emotion when describing something so that the reader has something to connect to. Therefor making the reader want to continue reading to see what will happen next. Also the perspective on how the author wrote it makes it more engaging since is written in first person the reader can connect and focus on the main character instead catching feeling for multiple characters. If it was written in third perspective it would be harder for the reader to make feel linked to the story. Another thing is the format is written in is written in diary form it makes easier for the reader to see what the character is trying to express.
In the book, Random Act of senseless Violence The main character is walking with her group of friends. Lola is walking with Izzy , Jude , and Weezy. They are just coming from the subway going back home. Thats when Weezy starts arguing with Jude about why Lola is in the group. Later on that evening Lola writes in her diary “ Before I knew what was happening she kicked up her foot and knocked the knife out of weez hand. It fell on the sidewalk and the blade broke.” The way the author decided to write this was interesting. The author wrote this quote almost as if it was meant to be a cliffhanger. Giving the reader a different perspective on the book how it slowly changing form a nice cheesy diary to a harcorde vilence experience diary. Thats whats unique about writing in diary format because you don't have to stick to a theme. Since you're writing what you are experiencing in your life which changes each day making the book more interesting. Also they gives the reader options on how they should interpret the book unlike other books that just stick to one theme. ANother thing that the author did is a good job describing what the main character was seeing. Or if the author said “she saw betty kick up her foot” theres nothing really you can connect to the main character because you can't really put yourself in the main character shoes. When written in first perspective you can put yourself in the main character shoes because it uses “I” so you can imagine actually see yourself as the main character.
In the interview with Jack Womack, the interviewer asked when he started writing the story. Then the question of why he decided to write the story the way he did came up. Jack Womack replied with “I wrote it like it was a diary. Every day would just be a new day. I’d advance the plot like that.” So Jack Womack or should I say the author of the book Random Acts of senseless violence. He decided to write in a diary format so he could have different plots each day. Which made the book more interesting overall because different things occurred also there were different conflicts and solutions. He also states that every day was a new day making the story easier to follow because everyday theres a new problem the main character faces that she has to overcome. Using this technique makes the reading want to finish the book because with everyday theres something different that happens. The structure for this book is really key to why a reader would want to read it. Imagine if the author was to tell the story using a different structure it would change how the reader interprets it. If it was written in another perspective it would of made the reader experience worse because they would be confused on what character. They need to focus on and what emotions they should be feeling. Since is written in first person and also written in a diary format it gives the reader a way to connect to it on realistic level instead of connecting to it just knowing is a fictional story. When its written in diary format the author can connect the reader to it knowing that people in real world write in their diaries every day making it easier for the reader to connect to the story. Its not just making the character connecting to the story or feeling attach to it. The plot of this story is what really This gives the reader the impression that the book structure ties in really well with the story itself making it unique from other book structure.
La Entervista
I know I can
A Day Full Of Code Switching
¨Yo bro what you doing.¨
He replied with ¨Bout to go get something to eat.¨
“Tell me how this jawn came up to me today and whisper in my ear. Like she weird forreal like who does that.¨
He says ¨Was she cute. Did she have cake ?¨
I reply with ¨She was okay. She had a little something. Nothing that noticeable but she had something.¨
As my brother and I enter the car on our way to school. I say ¨ Son papi¨ to my dad which is asking for his blessing.
He replies with ¨Dios te bendiga¨ which means “god bless you.”
My brother does the same. As my dad starts the car I turn up the radio. Switching the radio station to 96.5. We start on our way to school. My Dad starts talking about His teenage years. He starts talking about how it was hard for him to learn English and how his accent makes it hard for people to understand. While listening to him I realize that I talk differently depending on my surrounding. Like around my brother and friends I talk less educated and more slang. While around my parents I talk Spanish as well as English on their level of understanding. I also notice I try to talk more standard English in school .Its like I’m a totally different person when I’m in school than when I’m at home. As we arrive to school , My brother and I sign in and walk to a table.
Kareem says “Yo wassup.”
I reply with “sup”
As I walk up to class. I get ready to talk or try to talk standard English to my teacher.
I say “Hello Miss Pavohmov¨
She replies with “Hey Arsenio.”
I asks her “ So how has your day been.”
She replies with “Its been great how about yours.”
I reply with “My day has been good thanks for asking.”
I walk over to my seat and start getting my book out. Is not written in standard English but written in slang like how I speak at home and around friends. Anyways while reading the book I realize that people from the same city speak differently and dress different. An example is myself I’m from North Philadelphia and I say certain things differently compared to someone from South Philadelphia. Miss Pavohmov told us to put our books away and to talk about our books in our groups. I’m the first one to talk in my table about my book while everyone in my group are too shy to go first. I start talking about the main character and the problems he is facing. Once I finish they start talking about their books. Then the class really starts on its lesson.
The school day is finally over and I can go home. I wait for my brother down in the cafe. Once he gets there we leave through the front door.
“So how was your day bro?”
He replies with“It was alright.”
I ask “ have any home work?”
He says “ I have a little bit not that much how bout you?”
I say “ Nothing much just read.”
We arrive at the trolley stop. We both don't speak on the ride to the train station. My brother gives me the look. I nod my head left to right because this is not our stop. Then I rise 1 finger to indicate one more stop. He nods up and down to say okay. Once we get to the train station we walk to the Dirty Broad street line. Once we get there we wait for the train to come which usually doesn't take that long. The train comes and my brother and I enter the train and sit down not talking the whole way there. Once out stop is near I gave him the look then nod up and down indicating that the next stop is our. So we get off the train and wait for the bus to come. I do the same once we are in the bus. We are finally home where I’m free to speak slang English and not get judge by society. Once I’m home I realize that I do a lot of code switching in my daily life.
I was reading this article called How to Tame a Wild Tongue by Glona Anzaldua. She starts talking about how she codes switch in her daily life and says, “I may switch back and forth from English to Spanish in the same sentence or in the same word.” When I read that I understood what she meant. She says she switches from English to Spanish in the same sentence ,I do that that a lot when speaking to my parents. An example is “Mami hoy en escuela nosotros tenemos un project but I don't really understand can you see if you can help me.” I said mom today we were in school and we have a project but I don't really understand it can you see if you understand it. I don't only do this from English to Spanish I also do it with proper English to slang English. An example is “ Yo bro may I use your pencil.” which rarely happens but does sometimes. The switching from Spanish to English is what I call the language Spanglish. Which is just using Spanish and English in the same sentence.
Anyways enough talking about English. So let me give you some background history. Both of my parents are from the Dominican Republic that's were I get my Spanish accent from. Which I just noticed recently that I had. I also notice that I try to hide my Spanish accent when speaking English or trying to speak standard English. I take pride in my Spanish heritage unlike others who hate it. I take pride in it because that is what makes me unique from everyone else. Then again it leaves me in a disadvantage because some people might not take me as seriously because of my accent.
The reason why I code switch is because I feel comfortable doing it and it makes. When I don't talk on the train and just give out signals to my brother. Or when I speak Spanglish to my mom is because I feel comfortable with doing it. Not because I have to or because I’m force to. I do it because it is a easier way of communicating with my family and friends. I think everyone should code switch if it helps them get their idea across. I think code switching could be good and bad depending on how you are using it. You can use it to communicate to your peers easily or use it to talk trash about someone it all depends on the type of person you are.

Why did you make the slide look the way it does?I made the side the way it is because i wanted it to stand out so i made look like a billboard. I use colors that work great with each other or contrast with each other. Those colors are the dark blue and light blue i use for the background and the yellow for the text. What influenced your decision making?
What influenced me was seeing the ikea billboard it really caught when i put some thought on if it looks presentable. I also notice the color really stood out on the poster so i decided to incorporate those colors too.Something else that influenced me was i was just sitting in class when i took a glance at the window and look up to the sky. I thought to myself there are no limits when you can go past the clouds and sky all the way to the moon. why give up when you can try harder and become anything you want. Also do anything you want and become the person you want to be. Thats why i put the clouds in the slide because it shows the sky which is most people limits but not mines.
