Science-  Video games are more healthy than unhealthy when they are played for the appropriate time periods.

Society-  It is often said video games make people violent and cause various health issues when in fact they do the total opposite.

Self-  I play a lot of video games, I'm a gamer and I am glad to know that they are doing nothing to harm me and are in fact helping me

Lie Detecting

Posted by Jamison Turner in Science And Society - Best - E on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 10:48 pm
Lie detecting uses questioning techniques and examines physical functions in order to get the truth out of someone.  Most people know about lie detections through law enforcement tactics and a key tool for detectives.  Something I didn't know about lie detecting is that it is often wrong.
The way lie detecting works is quite easy.  It's official name is a Polygraph.  When people lie their blood pressure often raises along with their heartbeat.  So when you are hooked up to a lie detector these are the factors that are being measured.  People know this and can manipulate their results on the lie detector test.
Lie detectors have become more than just a tactic in detective work.  They have become an icon in TV and movies.  If you think about it, there have probably been multiple shows that you've watched that have involved or had a reference to a lie detector.  If you see a moving paper with 3 pens running along it you can probably already assume that it is a lie detector.
Lie detectors can be useful for the right people.  The thing about lie detectors is that their way of measurement is so widely known that people can almost prepare for their tests.  Not everyone can pull it off which is good because those people will be easier to determine whether or not their lying.
Lie detecting is somewhat a lost cause for now but the future could hold great things for it.  Brain scans of the suspects will be performed while their being questioned.  The suspects will also have to listen to words that relate to or are about the crime they are convicted of.  It is said that the results will be increased by a 90% accuracy level which will do great things for the world and will allow the right people to go to jail for their misdeeds.

Jamie Turner Capstone

Posted by Jamison Turner in Capstone - Manuel - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 10:46 pm
My capstone from the start was going to be a Dodgeball tournament.  My partner and I had high aspirations for the tournament and when the time came it didn't work out.  We went through all of the motions of hosting the tournament for months and worked really hard on it.  It was very disappointing when it didn't work out.  Once we realized the tournament wasn't going to happen, there wasn't much time to try and host a different type of event.  Serge and I decided to do our own seperate projects/ activities so we wouldn't be limited by one another.  Instead of sitting around and doing nothing I decided to use my time wisely.  On Wednesday afternoons I would go to my mom's classroom at Dobson Elementary School and provide 1 on 1 help with her fifth grade class.  For the most part I helped them in math but I provided help in english as well. Here are my resources for planning the Dodgeball tournament and a few pictures of the class and myself working together.  Working on the Dodgeball tournament was my main process and working with the fifth graders at Dobson was just a little extra bit I tried to get done.

 How Men Control Love

Posted by Jamison Turner in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 12:24 pm

How Men Control Love

A comparison of “Taming of the Shrew” and “50 First Dates”

Taming of the Shrew is a play about two sisters and their road to marriage.  Katherine (the shrew) marries a man named Petruchio who tries to “tame” her and her awful attitude.  “50 First Dates” is about a man named Henry Roth who meets a girl named Lucy,  He thinks he’s finally found the perfect girl.  The only problem is she has short term memory loss and once she goes to sleep she forgets what happened the day prior.  Henry tries to get her to fall in love with him a different way, everyday.  These movies are very different but both depict a man who thinks he can control their respected women’s feelings.

Petruchio and Henry are both trying to get a girl to fall in love with them just in two very different ways.  Henry is doing it the sweeter way though nothing like his situation has ever happened in reality.  It is touching to see he cares enough about a girl to think of new ways to get her to fall in love with him every single day.  Petruchio on the other hand is very cruel to his wife Katherine.  He wants her to stop being so mean.  The decision he makes is very dehumanizing to Katherine.  He decides to stop letting her eat and sleep as a hunter would do to a Falcon in order to tame it.  No matter which way anyone looks at it, they’d prefer to be with Henry.  Petruchio didn’t even really love Katherine.  He just married her so her younger sister Bianca could get married.  Today it is widely believed by many people that you are supposed to marry someone that you absolutely adore and they are supposed to absolutely adore you back, as well.

Screen Shot 2015-04-19 at 10.32.31 PM.png

In this scene Henry(on the ground) has his friend act like he’s beating him up so Lucy (far left) comes and saves him.  For a comedic aspect Lucy pulls out a baseball bat and starts to beat the friend with it until he runs off.  Henry does things like this for many days until he gets caught by Lucy’s father who forbids him to speak to her.  Henry is under the impression that if he does this Lucy will start to remember him and ultimately fall in love with him.  At this point in the movie it is too early to tell if it works out for him but as it goes one we see how his plans pan out.

“And if she chance to nod, I’ll rail and brawl, and with the clamor keep her still awake.  This is a way to kill a wife with kindness…  He that knows better how to tame a shrew, Now let him speak; ‘tis charity to shrew”

Act 4 scene 1 line 206

This quote is from the point in the play when Petruchio has a plan to “tame” Katherine.  Like the scene from the movie, this scene is too early to tell whether or not the plan will work but you can see the difference between Petruchio and Henry’s approaches to getting their girls to fall in love.  Most in not all people would most likely want Henry to be their significant other.  This is evident towards the end of both the Play and the Movie.

“Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee… Too little payment for such debt.”

Act 5 scene 2 lines 162-170

This is the last line from “Taming of the Shrew” and Katherine is the one saying it.  It’s a very lengthy last line but basically Katherine tells the other wives to obey their husbands.  This could be either taken one of two ways.  The first way is that she believes every word she says and Petruchio has totally changed her.  The other way is that she is being sarcastic, she is only saying and doing what her husband wants to hear and see for her own good.  So she can eat and sleep.  Katherine was very stubborn but no one is mean their entire lives and when she’s going to live with someone for the rest of her life she might as well be nice to him because he is her provider and at this point in her life without him she is on her own.

Screen Shot 2015-04-19 at 11.06.16 PM.png

This scene from “50 First Dates” shows Henry and Lucy hanging out with Lucy’s friends for the first time since she lost her memory.  She calls Henry her boyfriend and her friends ask Henry how he does it every day and one of them asks her husband “Why can’t you do that for me?”  Henry has gotten Lucy to fall in love with him everyday even though she doesn’t remember him once she goes to sleep.  Henry was able to change Lucy’s feelings towards him but not with force like Petruchio.  He was a gentleman to Lucy everyday and came up with a plan to remind her who he is and what’s going on at the current time.

These stories are both forms of entertainment so they are definitely far from the truth.  “Taming of the Shrew” is also very old so it is outdated as well.  These stories both depict a man getting a woman he has interest in.  Henry does it the nice way and in the end it works out for him.  Petruchio does it the harsh way and based on what Katherine said she most likely is in it for her own good.

How The World Changes The Self

Posted by Jamison Turner in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 9:04 am

Analytical Essay:

The world is constantly changing.  When people are young they don’t catch on to the change as easily.  Once those people get older they start to question whether they’ve changed as well or is the world just changing drastically around you.  Though many people believe that either the world changes a person or they change the world, the truth is that both happen simultaneously, with each being affected by the other's changes.

War is something that has been on and off between countries for many many years.  “The Yellow Birds” by Kevin Powers is a fictional story about the Iraq war.  Powers was a soldier who fought in the war so he used his first hand experience to make the story as realistic as possible.  "I was not surprised by the cruelty of my ambivalence back then. Nothing seemed more natural than someone getting killed."  This is a quote from “The Yellow Birds.”  The character saying the quote proves that the world is starting to change him and how it has changed him since then.  During the war he got used to death because it happened so frequently.  Since he’s talking about how he thought of death during that time in the past tense it is assumed he no longer is so numb to death.  The world may have changed his outlook on death atleast twice in his lifetime.

The Yellow Birds really shows how numb the war makes soldiers.  the way almost every character talks about war makes it seem so common.  “People are going to die,' he said flatly. 'It's statistics.' Then he got up and left the room."  This quote proves that not only does this particular soldier look at death as a common thing, but also shows that life itself loses its quality and is not as valuable.  He views people’s lives as statistics or numbers.  Soldiers thought that if they’re numb to loss then they’ll survive the war, but they didn’t survive the war at all spiritually.  They turned numb to loss and almost lost the emotion of sadness.  Losing any emotion is like partially losing a quality of life, or losing something that proves a person is a healthy, living human being.

The last quote from “The Yellow Birds” isn’t like the other quotes.  The other two quotes do not occur when a death happens, but this quote does.  "I'll yell, I thought. I'll tell him they are old, let them pass... I said nothing.  Holy sh**, that bit** got murdered... there was no grief, or anguish, or joy, or pity in that statement. There was no judgement made. He was just surprised."  This quote proves that this particular soldier doesn’t grief the death of the woman at all.  He only feels surprised that she died, and will most likely get over it by the next day.  The world around him has changed soldiers outlook on death and life in general.

In an interview, the author of “The Yellow Birds” Kevin Powers said “ I wonder why people are the way they are. I wonder how do we justify the things that we do, because it always seems like we are doing terrible things. But the stories that we tell ourselves are always about our goodness and our idealism and that contradiction has been interesting to me throughout my whole life.” This is an example of how people change the world or how it’s looked at by other people.  If all people hear about is good things in the news or any source, then they’ll believe the world is a good place and change its reputation everyone has of it.  When all the news talks about is negative things going on in the world it changes people’s outlook on it in a negative way.  Some may be concerned with the world when it’s in this state and some may just lose hope in the people around them.

There’s lots of different ways the world changes people physically, mentally, and emotionally.  People can only change the world physically and how other people look at it.  “The Yellow Birds” depicts a very negative and sad world where the soldiers are fighting emotionlessly and are not phased by anything going on around them. In a world like that the people will not continue to prosper and do great things like they have continued to do for centuries.

Narrative Essay:

Growing up I never had to worry about money.  My parents always gave me money in exchange for doing things they ask of me.  Then once I got a little older, like any other kid my demand for money became higher and higher.  When I asked for a cell phone my parents told me the only way I could get one is if I can pay the bill.  So I got a paper route and started delivering papers. I got paid enough to pay my bills and occasionally some spending money for a week or two.  In the summer I’d do landscaping jobs with my friend Stephen just because my demand for spending money is higher when I have more free time. Last year I realized that I needed more money than Both a paper route or mowing lawns could provide, so as soon as I turned 17 I started looking for a job.  I didn’t find a job until around June.  I started working at a nursing home in Andorra called “Cathedral Village”.  I didn’t care how much they paid me hourly I just wanted money in my pocket over the summer especially since I had a girlfriend I knew dates would be expensive.

As I got older a lot changed.  The things I bought, the amount of food I ate.  I just would not be able to make $40 last a whole month.  My world changed around me in that sense because prices of things I liked such as food, video games, and hockey equipment all went up in price.  The price of things is constantly changing because there is more of a demand or less of a demand for them.

Once I got a job it definitely impacted my weekly routine.  In the summer I worked about 24 hours a week.  When I used to delivers the newspaper I had to only work once a week for an hour.  I wasn’t used to having that little amount of free time, especially in the summer.  When I was younger I barely knew what day of the week it was in the summer.  But now I constantly have to keep track of it.  It was a real adjustment for me.  Getting a job was entering the real world for me.  A world I had previously not even thought about.  My world felt like it was moving too fast and because of that I had to change things I did and when I did them, like sleeping.  I stay up late and sleep late in the summer.  With a job I couldn’t do that because if I slept from 4am-4pm every day then I wouldn’t get to see any friends or my girlfriend on days I worked.  So I slept at a decent hour and still got to see friends and my girlfriend.

The world changing around me resulted in me changing to adjust to the real world. Prices of things I wanted went up and I needed money if I really wanted those things.  I also plan to drive this year so I’ll need money for insurance, gas, and eventually a car.  Having a job matured me.  It got me used to working long days.  My world will continue to constantly change and I’ll change with it.  The key is to take everything day by day and one thing at a time.

Jamie Turner's Revisions

Posted by Jamison Turner in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 10:28 am

Ever since hockey was first played fighting was always a part of it.  It’s a whole element of the game that some think it would change the game if it wasn’t allowed.  Lots of people would agree it should be banned for many reasons but the Professional leagues for the most part say keep it in.  Fighting is only allowed in professional Hockey because of the entertainment aspect and the money it brings in.

When teams whose hometown’s are relatively close to each other’s play each other that usually means it’s a rivalry game.  It’s not common to see a lot of hitting and fighting during rivalry games.  Recently NBC Sports has started broadcasting these games nationwide no matter what city the game takes place in.  This is so new comers see all the physical contact and are immediately hooked.

If the fights didn’t bring in new fans they wouldn’t be allowed.  A lot of fans go to the games or watch the games just to see a fight or two.  If there was no fighting these fans would lose interest therefore making the pro leagues losing lots of money.

Along with fighting comes many injures.  At least 2 NHL “enforcers” have committed suicide in the past 10 years due to depression that is linked to their role on the ice.  The sole purpose on an enforcer or goon is to fight for their team.  Most of the time these players get little to no points a season and are only brought in for big games where they’re expecting a lot of fights.  Without fighting these players may not have lost their lives.  A counter argument to that is that they would’ve never gotten where they were if Hockey wasn’t allowed but a life outweighs a job in any situation.

Fighting is considered part of Hockey.  It’s been allowed in Professional leagues since it all started.  It’s never been allowed in non-pro leagues.  How can something be part of the game if only a select few are actually allowed to fight?.  Rec leagues and school leagues do not allow fighting.  Basically once money gets involved fighting is allowed.  Is that a coincidence? No.  It’s allow about the money and keeping fans entertained.

Many leagues in the East have banned fighting.  There’s a much bigger penalty than just 5 minutes in the penalty box in those leagues.  There hasn’t been any suicides linked to players in those leagues because there is no enforcers in a game of non-fighting.  Ironically these are the leagues that aren’t as popular.  The NHL is without a doubt the biggest league in the world.  They do allow fighting and They do make the most money of any professional hockey players.

In the long run the only reason there’s still fighting in Hockey. The revenue it brings in is too large to get rid of it.  If it didn’t bring in a lot of money it would’ve been gone years ago.  Progress has been made but as long as players are getting hurt enough progress hasn’t been made. Soon enough it’ll come to an end.  Yes, it’ll change the nature of the game but it’ll be changed for the better.

Central Park Five Analysis

         Central Park Five Analysis

The Central Park Five wouldn’t have been an impact on our society if it weren’t for the media’s biased opinions and corruption.

The Central Park Five is the story of five teenaged boys, all of whom are either latino or black who were falsely accused for the rape of a woman jogging in Central Park.  This meant that five innocent boys were robbed of their childhoods while a rapist remains on the streets.  That really annoys me.  I watched a documentary called “The Central Park Five” to get more information on this investigation.  Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Kharey Wise, and Yusef Salaam were the five boys charged of the rape and assault of Trisha Meili who was referred to as “The Central Park Jogger” until the release of her book called “I Am The Central Park Jogger.”

It all started as a normal night.  These five youths didn’t really know each other too close before this.  A group of about twenty five kids were going to hang out at the park.  As the night went along kids in this group were getting into some trouble like harassing a couple on a tandem bike, assaulting a homeless man, and throwing objects at passing cars.  The cops came after word got out about this mischief and even though these five kids weren’t taking part in these acts they were still brought in to the Central Park Precinct.  Later that night a bloodied and abused woman was found on the side of a jogging trail.  These five boys were kept a little longer for investigation.  All of which were hispanic or black.  Despite the lack of evidence these boys were forced to confess to the crime on tape.  They were all tried and sent to prison until years later when the real rapist confessed to the crime.  The boys turned into men were free, but no they never really got the justice they deserved.

One thing the documentary talked about is that the media focuses on black on white crime more than any same race crimes.  Around the same time this is happening there was a white man who raped and killed a white woman but that never made it to the news or the daily paper.  If my biases decided which crimes were and weren’t publicized then I’d have to say I wouldn’t focus on a specific crime.  In my opinion any crime is a crime no matter what ethnicity you are.  I also think that it isn’t good to talk about specific crimes because nowadays too many things happen in a single day for us to keep track.  I’d at most put the crime or crimes that impact the community at a large on the news or in the paper because that will catch the eye of more people because it’ll affect more readers.

Something that really bothered me with this story is that there was no research done on any of the evidence.  When all was said and done with the young men someone made a timeline of what happened that night, when it happened, and where.  The string of mischief the Central Park Five boys were involved with occured on a totally different part of the park than the rape of Trisha Meili.  Why couldn’t they have looked at that before?  They did a DNA test on the kids but the DNA didn’t even match up so how on Earth are they still guilty?  I have a feeling the detectives on the case probably thought “Group of black and latino kids?  It has to be them even though they had no idea any of this happened.”  If the detective thought the way I think then Those boys would’ve just gave me contact information and I would have expanded on the case a little more before I drew a conclusion to whom it was.

The corruption in the Central Park five case is astonishing.  How can the authorities get away with making these kids read a scripted confession to a crime they were unaware even occurred?  How did they get away with this after it was revealed it wasn’t even them?  I’m not sure what that would be called but I’m pretty sure it is some type of felony.  That is definitely my biggest problem with this case.  If I were a lawyer defending one of the five innocent kids in this case I’d do whatever it takes to reveal the corruption in this case and get my client the peace he deserves.

What happened to the Central Park Five was really horrible but I think people got carried away from the real problem.  A woman was brutally raped while she was just going for a jog.  In my opinion the victim should be the media’s first priority.  This woman was basically left for dead and was in critical condition at the hospital.  I know at some point  I heard someone say that Meili thought she was in the year 1952 when it was actually 1989.  That is some serious damage to a person!  Our society needs to do something to calm crime down.  What is the point of just murdering someone?  How could a human being think that is fun?  I think this country needs to do put more money into Mental Health care rather than building new sports arenas and malls.  I’d rather have a safe environment than have nice stuff, because then if people are more mentally stable they can contribute to the growth of our community.

So as you can see I have some very strong opinions on the Central Park Five.  I’d highly suggest watching the Documentary because I’m sure this piece is full of my own biased opinions that I am too accustomed to to realize they are not neutral opinions.  Now I thought race played a big role in this case because I don’t think I would have ever heard of this case if it were a group of white teens.  A good point made in “The Central Park Five” is that the media makes black men out to be a hostile species of some sort.  So I think the biggest problem in cases like this is that the media plays a huge role in how we look at the situation.  Everyone has a freedom of speech but if you’re going to call something the news then at least give the news to us from a totally unbiased opinion.

What a Philly Accent Means To Me

Posted by Jamison Turner in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11:54 pm

Jamie Turner

Philly Accents

A Philly accent is an accent you earn.

I grew up in Philadelphia and have always been told how distinctive our accents are.  The rest of the world says “water” while we say “wooter”. We also say our “Os” from the back of our throat.  We have many other different accents on different letters and words but that is not the point.  My point is that in order to really have an accent you must earn it.

For some odd reason I have heard people I know don’t have a Philly accent try to fake one and it has really been annoying me lately.

Recently I was at a family event with my mom’s side of the family.  One of my cousins started talking in a Philly/ Italian accent literally in the middle of a sentence.  Since I am close with my family I knew that my cousin had not just magically developed an accent.  But this story does go along side with my argument that People take pride in a Philadelphian accent.   My cousin obviously wanted to have a Philadelphian accent so people would notice that he has strong roots in Philadelphia.  I think it is quite strange that my cousin tried to do this but it is understandable.

You can’t just wake up one day and say “You know what, I want to have a philly accent this morning and maybe a New York accent a little later.  You either are born with a specific accent or you develop one from being in that area or around people with that accent for a long time.  In order to even say you have an accent you have to just say words how you would say and pronounce words however you feel comfortable saying them.

To earn an accent is to learn what is like to be from or represent your city, neighborhood, or country.  I think anyone who has developed any type of accent should be proud of it.  I think Philadelphia accents represent people who are hard workers.  People with a Philly accent come from city filled with places and things that helped make this country what it is today.  In my opinion I believe a lot of people imagine that growing up in the city is cooler or maybe people think you are a strong person because I know many suburban people think that Philadelphia is a horrible place where you can’t even get out of your car to get into your house.  Yes there are certain place in the city of Brotherly Love that some may feel uncomfortable walking around in the public and things of that nature, but there are neighborhoods like that all over the country.  Anyway having a noticeable characteristic that clearly shows that you have been living in the city makes mislead people from rural or suburban areas think you are tougher or maybe more mature in a sense because of growing up in the city.

Though I feel comfortable in my city some people may not and that could because of a Philadelphia accent.  Someone who is not familiar with the area could hear someone with a Philadelphian dialect speak and think “What a trashy accent.”  A lot of people nowadays have the tendency to judge others as soon as they see that person.  People hear or see something that they aren’t used to seeing or have never heard wherever they are from and automatically decide that they would not  want to associate themselves with those things.  I think that is really a shame because most if not all people I know who live in the city of Philadelphia love it.  There is a vast majority of different cultures, people, places to see. and many more likeable details.  I feel as though everybody or everything deserves a chance before it is shut down.  So to any people who have never been to Philadelphia or any other urban area for that matter, you should really give the people and the community a chance.

Now while I have been doing this project I have been wondering “Where and how was our accent developed?’  There is no way to tell how or when an accent was developed.  But I can tell you that from farther research Philadelphians have a similar accent to New York and places like Reading, Pa. Baltimore, Md. and Wilmington, De.  These dialects are referred to as “The Mid- Atlantic Dialect”.  It would only make sense that these places are very close to each other compared to other places in the country or even the world.  My theory is that European immigrants brought their home dialects to America and they got all mixed- matched together.  All of the place I listed are also on the East Coast.  Another thing to note about the East Coast is where the majority of our Country’s pioneers came from.  I think that also explains why there is no particular West Coast dialect or accent.  These accents were thrown into a melting pot and made into their own individual accent.  That is what makes them what they are today.

So these are some things that I think make up our city’s accent.  These are just

my views on all of these topics unless something is proven or a fact.  I love my city

and I love the people in my city.  One thing I love so much about Philadelphia is that

we have one of the strongest accents in the country.  In my opinion your city hasn’t

truly established itself until it has it’s own accent.  That is why most if not all suburban

areas have no accent.  I strongly believe that our community plays a big role on how

our accent and our community are looked at by others.  You must take pride in who

you are and how you have gotten to be this person through outer influences around

you.  So this sums up why I think you should represent your city with pride and

dignity.

1. Negative space is when basically all of the colors are the opposite of what they should be.
2.
3. IT helps artists see things from a different perspective.
4.I think Negative spaces helps enhance drawings that are not very elaborate.

Elemental Project: Calcium

Posted by Jamison Turner in Art - Freshman - Hull on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10:26 am
Inquiry: I had to find information on my element for 2 reasons.  I needed to know what has calcium in it and its background.
Research: I had to look online for some facts about calcium.  I also had textbooks in Bio-Chem to help me.
Collaboration: I asked a few friends what they thought of my sketches.  I also gave feed back on others' sketches.
Presentation:  First I made sure to post my work on SLATE.  That way my peers and others can see my work.
Reflection: I reflected on my by posting my work on SLATE and doing this assignment.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The book I read for my second independent reading project this year was “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”  I decided to read this because I really enjoyed the first “Hunger Games” and I had heard that the second book of the trilogy is even more exciting than the first one.  Now since this is the sequel of “The Hunger Games” I wouldn’t suggest reading this if you plan on reading any of the books because I will have to spoil some of the parts of the book in order to let you know how I feel about certain parts.

The book picks up where “The Hunger Games” left off.  The main characters Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have just won the hunger games and are planning on going on their victory tour.  Before the tour she is informed by the president himself that one slip up could cause an uprise throughout the Districts of Panem (their home country).  Katniss has discovered that she and Peeta will have to go back into the Arena.  After a series of events in the Arena Katniss whose main objective was to keep Peeta alive, discovers that the remaining contestants have tried to rebel against the capital and have demolished the barrier that keeps them in the arena.  After the Barrier is destroyed Katniss becomes unconscious.  She wakes up in what used to be district 13 and finds out that her own district was blown up.  Going into the book I never saw any of this happening.

Personally I really enjoyed “Catching Fire”.  It had me on the edge of my seat.  A lot of the time I could not put the  book down just because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.  It seems as though the author Suzanne Collins makes sure that the most shocking things happen at the end of the chapters so the reader wants to keep reading.  There were days when I wouldn’t get out of bed until one o’clock in the afternoon because I just couldn’t stop reading.

The only problem I had with the book was that at some parts the author was a little too descriptive.  I felt as though Collins spent too much describing things that really had no relevance to the story line.  I would get a little bored when the author decides to take up 3 pages describing the different foods Katniss is being served.  This wasn’t a major problem for me because I felt as though something like this is too minor to not want to read the book.

I would most definitely suggest this book to almost anyone.  Going along with what I said about description in the book there are some pretty violent parts that younger readers may not want to hear so I might not suggest this to younger children.  Anyone else who has an interest in trying out “The  Hunger Games” trilogy I would highly suggest it.  This book brings a little bit of everything to the table.  It has a love story, it has some action parts, and it has it twists in the plot which I think really makes this book.

I’ve decided that I am going to finish this trilogy over the summer.  I am not usually interested into reading a book but these books have an exception.  “The Hunger Games” is like no other book I have read before.  Like I said it has some of everything in it.  The thing that makes me want to keep reading is that once you start reading you get attached to these characters.  It makes you feel like you are meeting these people in real life and you are a part of their community.  You also get to develop your own opinions on different characters.  Of course the book has its antagonists and protagonists but you have a specific way you think of them no matter what happens.

Overall I am very pleased with “Catching Fire” It has its twists and turns in the story line but it has nothing too far fetched that you just can’t read it.

Final Blog Post

Since blog post two a lot of progress has been made with my YATW project.  The biggest thing being that I did my Agent of Change part of the project.  Also this blog post will be wrapping up my YATW project.  On Saturday April 27 and Saturday May 4 my mom and I went to a soup kitchen to help out those who are living in poverty.  We also went there to set an example for anyone who wants to make a change in their community.  Now I will get into more detail about my agent of change.

My mom and I went to St. Michael’s LutheranChurch two Saturdays in a row.  We help set up, Serve food, and clean up. On the 27th there were a lot of people coming for food.  After talking to a few people the said that the reason there was so many people was because it was the end of the month and most people’s checks some in at the beginning of the month.  When we went on April 27th there was over 100 people served.  On May 4th there was about 80 people we served.  That is because most people got their checks.  Now I am going to talk about this project’s impact on me and the people around me.

IMG_0388
IMG_0388

This project has impacted me in many different ways.  One of them is that I now look at people that are living in poverty or homeless a lot differently.  I think that I also made the people around me feel the same sympathy which was my goal.  I would say that this task would have been a lot more challenging if I had to arrange something myself.  I am more of the someone who likes to collaborate with other people to accomplish a task like the Agent Of Change.  In a way I would consider myself a leader because in my community no one really tries to make a change and I feel as though I have set an example for people who are unsure about making a change in our world.  In the future I plan on going back to St. Michael’s to do more work so I feel as though this project sparked something new in my life.  It definitely changed as it went along.

When I first found out about this project I thought to myself “So all I have to do is some community service then I write about it?”  Now I know that this project was meant to be more than that.  The project has inspired me to go out, and do good things because I have the power to change and inspire our generation.  All it takes is one person then others will follow.  That is how my opinion of the YATW project has changed and what I will take from my experiences during the process of this project.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Jamison Turner in Art - Freshman - Hull on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 11:26 pm
One thing I learned this marking period is how to draw three-dimensional pictures that actually look nice.  This made my drawings look a lot more accurate and definitely better looking.  I think if I did this assignment again I would definitely add more detail to the walls, floor, and the ceiling.  My advice to beginners is to listen to Ms. Hull and look carefully at the slide show she provides.  My most useful source of information was Ms. Hull because she was always there to answer our questions and she was the person who made our slide show.

Macbeth Creative Piece

Posted by Jamison Turner in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 10:29 am
My creative piece is about the downfall of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as to where my written piece is only about the downfall of Lady Macbeth.  The creative piece took me a while only because I am not a very artistic person.  My first idea was to draw a castle crumbling on one end and on the other it is perfectly fine but I am not good at drawing elaborate pictures like that.  So I stuck with the castle idea but changed it up a but and I still kept the same concept.  The hardest part of the project was probably thinking of a project that would be not just fit in with the others and I am pretty sure I am the only one in the class with a power point.  I'm proud that I came up with my own type of project because all of my life I just did what every one else did.  If I could change something I would add more slides.  I learned that other people also did very individual projects and I found out that when I put my mind to something I come up with some good ideas.

    The Causes of Poverty

Since my last post I have done a lot of research.  I did a survey to see what people’s views are on Poverty in Philadelphia.  I got a lot of feed back and a lot of different answers.  I also got to see a few different point of views.  My results will most likely determine what my agent of change.  It all depends on what people think we can do to help prevent poverty.

In my survey I asked people the questions that I wanted answered in my first blog.  First I asked if they thought poverty was a major problem in Philadelphia.  91% said yes they thought Poverty was a major problem.  My first thoughts when I saw that 9% said Poverty wasn’t a problem was “ What are they Thinking?”  But when you think bout it they have a point.  Philadelphia has so many other problems.  I know multiple people died on New Years Eve this year.  As a matter of fact my dad’s cousin was killed in a hit and run on City Line ave.  So I can see that we do have other major problems besides Poverty.

Screen Shot 2013-01-18 at 2.16.16 PM
The second Question I asked was “What is the main cause of Poverty in Philadelphia?”.  The reader had a choice between Unemployment, Drugs, The Economy,  Or they could put their own answer.  The answers were pretty evenly balanced but most people voted that the economy was the biggest reason why people are living in poverty.  I personally thought that drugs were the biggest reason why people were living in poverty but now I can see that it may be the economy.  The country is in trillions of dollars of debt.  So I can totally understand why that was the most popular reason.  So I think that this answer is a lot easier to understand than the first answer.

The last question I asked was the question that will influence my agent of change.  The question is “What can we do to prevent poverty?”.  I only gave the person the option of saying it’s up to the economy or their own answer.  More people said their own answer in this last question.  I was actually very surprised to see that a majority of these answers were about the country’s education problems.  I actually never really thought that education and poverty went together until I saw these answers.  This totally changed my thoughts on this question.  I thought the solution was more homeless shelters and soup kitchens.  But know I think education is the key to prevent people from living in poverty.

This survey really interested me in a few different ways.  One way is that I got to find an understanding for other people’s points of view on Poverty in our city.  Another way is that it totally changed my point of view on how poverty could be prevented.  I think These things are the exact reason I did a survey.  I think the next time I do a survey I would try to get more people to take it because I didn’t have too many people take my survey other than that I think this was very successful.

Review of "Beyond Belief" by Josh Hamilton

Beyond Belief Review
The book I read is “Beyond Belief” by Josh Hamilton. The story is an autobiography about the Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder named Josh Hamilton.  The story is about how much potential Josh had in high school and into the  M.L.B draft.  After struggling with injuries Josh had experimented with cocaine and alcohol.  This lead to an addiction that could have killed him.  He was told that he probably would never play baseball again.  He pulled through it and actually made it back to major league baseball.  I gets into more details about how he handled his recovery day by day.
One thing I really enjoyed about this book is the way things were told.  One moment you didn’t things would get any worse for Josh and the next moment you don’t think anything could stop him.  This also is a very inspirational story.  Reading this book actually warmed my heart when he talked about things like when he was baptised with his daughter or his first at bat in the major leagues.  I think Hamilton is very good at describing things and that actually makes you feel like you are there with him at certain parts of the book.  Those are some things I really liked about the book.
One thing I didn’t really like about the book was how things were managed.  Chapters ranged from one page to thirty pages.  I personally like when all of the chapters are around the same number of pages.  I also thought that there are certain parts that could have either been left out or josh could have described how those things affected his road to recovery or is baseball career, but that is only one or two parts.  There really wasn’t anything that I didn’t like about the material in general it is just the way things are organized.  That is what  I didn’t really like the book.
If someone asked me if they should read this book I would say absolutely.  It isn’t too long or too short.  You just have to go into the book knowing that it is based on facts but it still has a fictional feel to it.  I think I would recommend it mostly to a person who may be having addiction problems or knows someone close to them that has addiction problems.  It is a very inspirational book and it answers a lot of questions that are answered about addiction in “Beyond Belief”.  So if you are considering reading “Beyond Belief’ then I would say go for it.
  1. Overall I would say “Beyond belief was a good choice for my Independent Reading Project.  I am not much of a reader but I can say this book was not the type of book were you really don’t want to read it but you have to.  This is the type of book where once you start reading you can’t stop.  I would start reading at seven and not even realize I was reading for three hours straight.  So that is what I think of “Beyond Belief” by Josh Hamilton.
nd God will come close to you. - James 4:7

My Power point Slide

Posted by Jamison Turner in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 9:08 pm
Before we did this project I sort of taught my self how to make power point slides.  But now that we did our research I know a few things that i didn't know before.  One is that I used to always put full sentences on my slides.  Now I know that most of those words are unnecessary and I just need a few of them to get my point out.  I also found out that I should leave the background of the slide a very light color to add some contrast.  Those are the things that I learned from this project.

Poverty In Philadelphia

Hi My name is Jamison Turner.  I am a freshman at Science Leadership Academy.  For english class we have been assigned a project called “You and The World” the aim of this project is to make a change in our world today.  We could pick any subject we wanted so I picked poverty in Philadelphia.  I think part of the problem maybe the amount of people that lost their jobs last year.  During this project I will  find try to answer a lot of questions.

One of the questions I had was how much has the poverty level gone up.  In 2010 about 15.3 % of The United States’ population was living in poverty.  In 2011 that number rose to 15.9%.  So the number of people living in poverty rose about .6%.  If the poverty number rose .6 % every year than in about 1/4 of our population would be living in poverty in about 16 years.  I think that is absolutely unbelievable. That will lead me into my next question.

My next question is what percent of people are living in poverty in Philadelphia.

The answer is 26.7%.  Since i am a Philadelphia resident I didn’t think that more than 1/4 of our population is living in poverty.  This is very depressing to hear because I didn’t think we had that high of a poverty rate in Philadelphia.  That is like saying that 1 out of four people in Philadelphia are living in poverty.  This topic will also lead me to my next Question

Screen Shot 2012-11-28 at 9.22.20 PM
Screen Shot 2012-11-28 at 9.22.20 PM
My third question is what are some reasons for this many people living in poverty.  I think it may be the unemployment rate in Philadelphia because in 2011 the unemployment rate was 11.5% in Philadelphia.  This could be the biggest reason because you can’t provide for your family if you don’t have a job.  the government could help these people out with financial aid but instead they give billions of dollars to oil companies.  The government and economy definately have something to do with the poverty and unemployment rate.

Those are the general things I wanted to know about poverty in Philadelphia.  Know I am going to try to help people out who are living in poverty.  I want to make their life easier and set a good role model for younger people in the world.  I would also like to spread awareness to the government that a lot of people are living in poverty because of the amount of layoffs in the last few years.

Bibliography here.  Click here to see a chart of unemployment in Philadelphia.  Here is a link to see a chart comparing the poverty levels in Philadelphia and the Suburbs.
