Element Print
My element is Tungsten and it’s atomic number is 74. My element was discovered by Irish chemist Peter Woulfe from his analysis of the mineral wolframite. Tungsten was isolated as tungstic oxide (WO3) in Sweden by Carl W. Scheele in 1781. Tungsten is widely used in older style electric bulbs and electronic tubes. It is also used as the filament in halogen tungsten lamp, and it is used in heavy metal alloys due to its hardness.
I decided to draw and grenade because Tungsten is used in bullets, missiles and grenades. As I was looking at images I saw a tattoo of an exploding grenade and I thought it looked nice so I decided to draw it. To make the print I first sketched the grenade a few times and finally once I liked one of them I drew it nicely. Then after the drawing was finished I had to draw it again onto onion paper so that I could trace over it to engrave the styrofoam. Then I covered it with ink and transferred/printed it onto paper.
If I printed again I would spend more time drawing to attempt to make the drawing even better. I also would add more paint so that the entire image was printed evenly. I enjoyed the research the most because I found what I learned interesting and I was learning a lot of different facts. For the research I had to look at all the aspects of my element, what it is used for, where it is found, where, when and who discovered it, where is it mined, and it’s facts such as it atomic mass, atomic number and symbol.
Rubber Stamp
Our assignment was to create a stamp or logo that represented us. The point of having this logo was so that we could then have a symbol for which we could be recognized by. We had to figure out ways to use negative and positive space to our advantage.
When I was thinking of my logo I thought of things that I like, feel strong about and do. In the beginning I was thinking of do something more complex like a surfer and palm tree forming a K but I am not a very good drawer and it was hard to tell what it was. I then thought of using the sign language sign for K because K is the first letter of my name and because the sign looks like a peace sign. After looking at my teachers logos, Marcie Hull and Steven Herrera, I was inspired to create a more simple logo that involved my initials, like theirs. I first started by sketching and trying out anything I could think of. Eventually I came across the idea of having the B and K be next to each other. After thinking some more I thought I could put a T across the center making the B and K clearer. I decided to use negative space for the T as it allowed me to include meanwhile being discreet. After looking at it for a bit I decided to add a rectangle above the top of the T in positive place to make it more clear and because I thought it looked nice. By now I had it all on my computer because I found it easier to navigate negative and positive space this way. I finally decided that I was going to add the G in positive space at the bottom part of the B. I finally liked my logo so I decided that I didn’t want to change much so I just cleaned it up to make it look nicer.
It was a hard process to understand negative and positive space for me as I had never thought of images and things in this way and it was a bit mind boggling. I got stuck a lot with trying to understand how you could fit another image inside one however I was able to solve this when I saw the arrow inside the FedEX logo. For some reason this example, after already seeing so many, made sense to me and made my mind click. I was able to learn a lot about negative and positive space but the biggest thing that stuck out to me was that their can both be used to your advantage if you know how too and by knowing how to use them it can change the way you design/create a image or logo.
Negative Space
A.
Negative space is the area between the things in the drawing or photograph. In this photo it would be the purple on the left and the green on the right. As you can see it is not the image that I want you to see but it is the space around it.
B.
I found it by looking at the object, the owl in this case, and then paying attention to the space that is not the point of interest. I then cut out that area and the inside, the positive space, out of the purple.
C.
Negative space is important because it can help you highlight certain areas and it can also allow you to hide images inside an image. It can help us see an image more clearly. It also helps you show two things in one.
D.
Yes, because it can bring compensation to the image and help contrast the subject(s) of the image. You can use negative space to highlight positive space and make your subject(s) clear.
Reflection on Media Fluency
I learned a lot from seeing what mistakes my peers made and my peers pointing out the ones I made. One of the many things I learned is that it does not look good when a photo is touching the edge of a border. However, I learned that touching an edge/border is different to bleeding off or on. I also learned that if I have a pattern with colors or designs that I should not break it by adding different colors because it can be disruptive and unpleasing to the human eye.
The big thing that I changed is the colors of the SLA logo and of the photo of me. I did this because one of my peers suggested it, and many others agreed with her suggestion, so I decided to give it a shot. After I changed the colors I put the photos back on my slide and saw how they looked and I thought to myself, this could work out but first I had to play around with the colors and make it work. I also changed the size of both of the pictures because someone commented on making the photo of me bigger. After I had changed the colors I did that and made it to where it was partially bleeding off. When I made the photo of me bigger I knew I had to make the SLA logo bigger so there would be a better balance between it and the photo.
The last change that I made was the placement and size of the text. I was given advice from many peers to make the text more centered and to make the equation of how I got into SLA smaller. So after I moved them around to have it more centered I made the text of when I got into SLA bigger because that was something I thought was more important. But I still needed the part of when I came to Philadelphia so I decided I would make it smaller but not too much. Finally I decided to make the text the same shade of purple as the photo of me and the SLA logo which was #540a5c. I had to then customize a color for the text so I typed in that color number and then I had my color for the text.
I personally believe that research is very important for just about every decision you make in school and in life. In this project I found research very important and helpful for me because it helped me learn a lot about a topic and skill that I knew very little about. Before starting this I knew very little about designing so research helped me learn many new skills and take notice of what would work and what would not.

Making my slide was a hard process. I made 11 rough drafts of different slides before I chose this one. My slides varied from motivation, social justice, police brutality, government surveillance, baking, me getting into SLA, and me moving to Philly. It was confusing and hard figuring out how to fit as much as I could from my “Me Magazine” and, at the end I decided to do something about moving to Philadelphia from Albuquerque and getting into SLA.
After looking at different pictures and drawings, I found a backdrop of the Philadelphia skyline and decided to use it. I put it into Pixlr Editor so that I could keep only the skyline and make the rest transparent but I encountered a problem: Pixlr Editor did not let me keep the buildings, it only let me keep the sky, which had the out print of the buildings, and, to solve this problem, I thought that if I edited it a bit I could make it work. I made the skyline purple, put it on a slide, and decided to contrast it with the background of the slide and, naturally and following the color circle, I made the background yellow. After looking at it for a bit, I felt that something was wrong but I did not know what it was and decided I would let it rest. The next day I asked for some opinions from friends, which was a good idea the main thing that stuck out to me was that I should make the contrast stronger. I then edited it some more to make the purple darker to contrast the bright yellow. I was satisfied with the skydrop but I knew I needed to add more to the slide.
I wanted a photo of me in the slide and chose a selfie I took in Cape May last autumn, and started to edit it in order to make the background transparent -when I say transparent I mean that part of the background comes through the picture. I chose to have it this way because it showed most of my face. This was a good choice because when I showed it to people they wanted to look back at it, finding it interesting and cool.
Since I already had incorporated Philadelphia into the slide I decided I wanted to put SLA in too. As I looked online at the different logos of SLA I decided to go with this one because it was appealing and simple. I put it into Pixlr Editor and decided to get rid of the white, which was inside the circles, and I made that area transparent. I then put in in my slide and realized that to make a bigger contrast I needed to change the color of the flames, which I did from white to orange. I made the adjustments and then put it on the slide.
Once the graphics were done, I had to decide what to write and in what font. I already knew that I was going to put something about moving to Philadelphia and how and when I got into SLA, but I had to find the words and make it short. I decided to go with “[place] got Kai in [year]” because it was short and straight to the point. I had some trouble finding what words to use to say how I got into SLA and decided that I should make it like a math equation because it was simple, used few words and delivered a clear message. I decided to use the “Frijole” font because, as you can see, the Philadelphia skyline has a graffiti/street art look and “Frijole” went the best with it, giving it what I think is an appealing texture. I decided to make the letters the same color as the skyline so there would be harmony.
When I was moving things around I decided to put the photo of me and the SLA logo on opposite ends so there would be a balance and it would be nearly proportional. I hope that this explained everything about my slide and why I did it that way. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will do my best to answer them. Thank you for listening to my presentation, I hope you enjoyed it.My Home Network
explain your L.A.N. Local Area Network - all the devices on your internet connection:
At my house our internet provider is Comcast, Xfinity. From that we have two wifi networks, “Luna Lunera” and “Luna Lunera Guest”. On Luna Lunera their are 3 Iphones, my moms each have one and so do I. Then their are 3 laptops connected, one for each family member. Then their is a Smart TV connected. On “Luna Lunera Guest” my Iphone, laptop and the Smart TV are also at times connected. Whenever we have guests we connect them to it.
reflect on what you learned about networks, did you have an OMG moment that you learned something new and interesting? if now write about what you learned:
I learned that Internet is physical and W.W.W. (World Wide Web) is not. I also learned that fios means at the speed of light, so coax cables bring you slower internet. I had an OMG moment when I realized that the internet is not owned or controlled by anyone but it is a network of providers and systems all interacting with each other. I had many OMG moments but another I had is realizing how complex the Internet and the W.W.W. are.
what would you tell other people that they need to know about having an ISP/Home network?:
I would tell them that everything you do, is always in the history of your device, Internet and W.W.W. Also that if you have the money get Fios instead of Xfinity because Fios is at the speed of light which will make your browsing faster. Also know that you can block things through your Internet and it makes it that anyone using your internet cannot access what you have blocked.
