Shamus Keough Reconstruction of Memory

Posted by Shamus Keough in College English · Pahomov/Rhymer · B Band on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 5:41 pm

I remember when the doctor told me I wasn’t going to live. I was an overweight man living in Detroit, living in an average house with my wife and child. While I was overweight, I still tried to get to the gym on weekends, and when ever I had freetime. I wasn’t the best with working out, but I always made sure I ran a few miles on the treadmill. I thought it would be interesting to try out running and see if I could lose some weight as well. The next summer after I started training I had already set up the idea to run a half marathon by some point in my life.

By the second month of training, I was starting to be really proud of myself. I had been doing some long runs, and at that point my farthest run had been nine miles. I was happy, and so was my wife, everything was going great. Until the doctor visit the next week.

I had gone to the doctor after work one day because I felt a little bit like I was starting to get the flu. I got to the doctor’s office and described how I was feeling to the doctor. The doctor said “Well… it might be a cold, but I just want to check if it could be something else. Would you mind taking an mri really quick?” I said sure, and got into the machine. The mri ended a few minutes later, and the doctor came into the room with a sad look on his face.

“I’m so sorry… it’s what I thought it might be. You have blood cancer.”

I later found out that I had only a few more months to live. I didn’t know how exactly to react, all I knew was that I was going to finish that half marathon I promised to my wife. I kept on practicing, every weekend, and any other free time I had. I had been practicing so much, I knew I was going to do his best, and even if I had to, make it the last thing I did in my life.

Author’s Note

The plot of the story is partially based off of my first experience running a half marathon. My first time running a half marathon was pretty difficult, so I tried to have my main character also have a hard time training at first. I had Terry start out training and have some trouble at first, which I can admit I also had some trouble when I first started running. After Terry starts running, I added him being diagnosed with cancer because I wanted to make Terry have some extra struggle with his training. I had the idea of him being diagnosed with cancer because I also had cancer when I was younger.

Nothing more important than your phone
As time has gone on, technology has become more popular and more accessible to the population. Most people nowadays have some type of smartphone and have it with them almost all of the day. People use their phones for stuff like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Youtube, Uber, among many other things. People value their phones, and they use them with everything. There are certain effects that they have on people.
First off, a big way that phones affect people’s lives is someone being able to receive quick messages. Pretty much all current smartphones are equipped with some type of search site, like safari or google, and people use them to find the information they might need. Many people may just need an answer to a question, and using their phone to find the answer would be much faster than other options. A survey done by NBC News showed that cell phones are essential to 83% of Americans lives, to retrieve information immediately, to relieve boredom or to help in emergencies. Clearly showing that many people use their phones as their way to get information. This has made it so people can find the answer to a question much faster than if they had to use a home computer, which would take much longer.
Secondly, people spend a lot of time on their phones throughout the day. People spend lots of time on their phones on lots of different things. People can spend their time on different types of social media, or school/job work related things. While some may be more important than others, people still spend lots of time during their day doing these activities. A study by the company mobileinsurance.com found that the average person will spend 90 min a day on their phone, which would be about 23 days a year. Many people spend a lot of time on their phones daily now, a lot more compared to other activities throughout the day. This time that people are spending on their phones during the day could be spent on more useful/important things. Things like family, work, shopping, among many other things.
Another point, being the types of apps that people use. In the recent years, there have been many new unique apps created, like Uber, Spotify, Snapchat, among many other. Many of these apps have changed lots of things that people do in their normal lives. Spotify for example, making it much easier for people to listen to music. Where before people would have to buy an album or specific song so they could listen to it on their phone, now many people just pay for Spotify so they can stream all of their favorite songs whenever they want. Many apps like this are also used by a lot of people. For example, Snapchat was the 11th most popular app of 2017, and Spotify is the 5th most popular app of 2017 (info from the website Business Insider). Many of these apps change how people do normal activities in their lives, like listening to music or communicating with people.
Finally, the effect apps like Lyft or Uber have had on transportation. Apps like Lyft or Uber have become extremely popular within the last few years. Many people have used the app so they could have a new job, being a driver for either of the companies. Many people also use the app so they can get around easier, and also so they can get around if they don’t own a car. Both of these apps have become extremely popular in the U.S. and around the world. According to the Los Angeles Times, Lyft is valued at a $5 billion company, and Uber is a $62.5 billion company. These companies have not only created many jobs for the people who work for either company but also changed how many people use transportation from their phones.
As shown, social media and your phone being so important (to most people) have had many effects on people’s normal lives. They have affected how people get their information, how lots of their time is spent, how they do many normal activities (like listening to music or communicating with people), or how many people transport themselves.

This is my best possible 2fer because I put as much time and effort as I could into it, and because this is a topic I care about. The week that we have had to do this 2fer involved a lot of work for other classes, and I had to try as hard as I could to find time to work on this. When most people try to talk about social media/phone use and the effects of them, lots of people just talk about how they distract kids or are bad for you. I wanted to talk about the other effects they have on humans, like the effect on transportation, listening to music, or people getting their information.

Guess Shrew: Shamus Keough

Posted by Shamus Keough in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 10:52 am

Guess Shrew

Shamus Keough

The Taming of the Shrew is a romance story that is about two men trying to start relationships with two women who are partially being controlled by their father. Baptista, who is the father of the women (Katherine and Bianca) doesn’t want one of them to get married without the other one getting married. Because he doesn’t want this, he is not letting either of them get married unless the other one is setting up a marriage too. Both Petruchio and Lucentio wanted to marry Bianca but had to set up a plan where both of them would marry a daughter.

Guess who is a movie about a black girl named Theresa, who is in a relationship with a white man named Simon, and are planning to get engaged soon. Theresa and Simon are very happy together, the one problem is, Theresa’s family doesn’t know Simon is white. After Percy (Theresa’s father) meets Simon, he starts to criticize him a lot and tries to get his daughter to stop dating him. These two stories both are about a father trying to involve himself in the daughter’s relationship, mainly because he cares about his daughters and wants to make sure they are okay. The stories also differ, like in the way that Baptista wanted to make sure his daughters get married, and Percy is mostly against who his daughter is dating. In every romantic relationship, family should be involved to protect their child even if it can cause negativity.

"And for I know she taketh most delight in music, instruments, and poetry, schoolmasters will I keep within my house fit to instruct her youth."

(Act 1, Scene 1, 94-97)

This quote is from Baptista, trying to speak highly about his daughters and their intelligence. He is speaking about them highly so any men that meet them may hear about them and think they are great women that they would want to marry. He is showing that he cares a lot about his girls and their relationships, and doing it in a very nice way.

Baptista is showing his concern for his daughter’s relationships in a positive way, trying to get some men to be interested in dating his daughters. Percy on the other hand, cares about his daughter, and shows it in a slightly negative way.

Screenshot 2018-04-15 at 10.03.28 AM
Screenshot 2018-04-15 at 10.03.28 AM

Percy in this scene is about to sleep next to Simon, in an effort to try and scare him. He also does it  to make sure Simon doesn’t wake up in the night, sneak in to Theresa’s room, and have sex with her. Percy is obviously showing that he cares about his daughter, but in a more negative way. His method of trying to scare Simon is negative, and he could have just tried to be polite and make sure Simon doesn’t do certain things.

“Faith, gentlemen, now I play a merchant's part and venture madly on a desperate mart.”

(2, 1, 345-348)

In this quote, Baptista says a metaphor as if he was a businessman and it is his job to work out his daughter’s marriages. He is speaking about it because getting his daughters married is extremely important to him. This is a nice way to show that he cares about his daughter’s relationships. (It is also a little negative since he is caring about himself partly, but it’s still positive in a way.)

Again, Baptista is trying to help his daughter’s out with their relationships in a nice way, and not really being negative to anyone. In this scene from the movie on the other hand, Percy is caring about his daughter, but trying to make the things he has been doing to Simon seem okay.

20180415_135648655_iOS
20180415_135648655_iOS

In the current scene, Percy is talking to his daughter, and she just asked him about why he has been so mean to Simon. Percy says it is because he doesn’t trust him, and he doesn’t want his daughter starting a relationship with someone who might do something wrong to her. While it is nice that he is doing something to try and protect his daughter, Percy is still being rude and trying to scare away Simon. Simon is someone who genuinely cares about Theresa and loves her, and doesn’t deserve what Percy is doing to him.

"I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; if wealthily, then happily in Padua."

(1, 2, 76-77)

This quote is from Petruchio, and he is speaking about how he only really cares about the money he will get when he marries one of Baptista’s daughters. The important thing about this quote is that it shows why Baptista has been caring about his daughter’s marriages, because he wants them to both to get married and to get married to men that actually care about them.

Baptista, once again was trying to be nice, and protect his daughters from people like Petruchio because they could treat his daughter’s badly if all they care about is the money. Percy, in the movie scene, is once again showing why he was treating Simon bad, and why he will treat him okay now.

20180415_135627111_iOS
20180415_135627111_iOS

In this movie scene, Percy and Simon are home alone at the house, just after Percy’s wife, Marilyn, and Theresa just left them and are currently staying at Marilyn’s sister’s house. Percy at this time is starting to see that Simon isn’t a bad person, and is now treating him nicer. Now that Percy knows Simon is a good person who cares about his daughter, he isn’t feeling like he needs to try and scare him off, and can be nice to him.

Both of these stories deal a lot with the idea of parents trying to be apart of their children’s romantic relationship. They both have fathers that show that they care, but both show them in different ways. In Taming of the Shrew, Baptista shows that he cares about his daughter’s and their relationships in nice ways, like when he speaks nicely about them to make men want to be in a relationship with them. He talks about how he will set up many of the things in their relationships for them, and overall is showing he cares in many different nice ways. Percy on the other hand shows that he cares by trying to get his daughter to date someone else. Percy doesn't trust Simon with dating his daughter and tries to scare Simon off. Overall, showing that he cares in a negative way. Both fathers show they care about their daughters a lot and show that they do throughout both of the stories. The ways they care show that while some parents can show how much they care about their children’s relationships in a nice way, many can still show it in negative ways like scaring away a person they don't trust with their child. While it is shown that negativity can be caused, the stories still show that family should be involved in romantic relationships to protect their children.

Broad Street One - Shamus Keough

Broad Street One

It was the morning of May 3rd, 2015 I had just woken up around 4 am. I was waking up a lot earlier than I normally would, and was feeling very tired because of it. The morning was cold, so I decided to dress in an undershirt, and then my blue Students Run Philly Style shirt on top because I had to represent my running team. Besides that, my outfit consisted of running shorts, a normal pair of socks, and my running shoes, all of which had become normal wear for me when ever I had a run. After getting dressed, I proceed to go to the kitchen, where I tried to eat breakfast, but I was feeling so worried and anxious, that I couldn’t eat anything. Anything that I did eat, I vomited. You may ask, why were you so worried that morning. I was feeling worried because that day happened to be the first time I was going to run the Broad Street 10 Miler
Let's back this up a little bit though to the night before, where the story starts. It was my eighth grade year, and my first year trying students run. I had figured, "It's my last year here, why not try a sport?” I decided to join Students Run Philly Style, an organization that helped kids participate in distance running for free. I was enjoying the season all the way up to the Broad Street run. Although I was one of the slowest runners on our team, I really enjoyed being on the team.

Our season leading up to Broad Street was comprised of running distances that were getting longer and longer until we could run ten miles. Everyone on my team and me had been putting in so much effort, training 3 or 4 days a week, and always trying our hardests at those practices. By the time we were getting close to Broad Street, we had already gotten to ten miles, and I felt okay with running distances that long. I was still feeling worried though, and I wasn't sure why. All these feelings had followed me to the night before the run, when our team was having a celebration dinner. All the coaches, parents, and kids were bringing food to eat, and celebrating what we had accomplished. We had been eating and talking, and it was all really fun, but through the whole thing I was still feeling worried about the run the next day in the back of my head. People were talking about the race tomorrow and lots of the things they were talking about made me excited or happy, like when my coaches were talking about what it felt like when you crossed the finish line. At the same time, I kept thinking about things that worried me when they brought up certain situations that could happen. Like when they brought up finishing the race, my mind started thinking about having to do the whole race, and the physical struggle of doing it. I was also thinking about doing the race and how hard it would be all night as I tried to fall asleep, and all the way till I woke up. At the same time, I couldn’t stop thinking of how much time and effort I had put into this, and how I had to finish the race.

The morning of the race, I was extremely worried, so worried to the point that my arms and legs were shaking, and couldn’t stop until we started running in the race. I had been getting myself so worried about the race from all the things I had been hearing from people. I had been getting myself so worried about how all these new experiences would go, and what would happen. While I was getting ready and everything, I just kept trying to calm myself down, and think of good things that would happen. I kept trying to think to myself, “You’re going to do great. You can do this,” or anything to keep positive thoughts in my head. When we got to the starting line, and I was waiting with all of my team, I was still just as, if not even more worried. Eventually, the time had come to get into the crowd of people all waiting at the starting line, which took about an hour

It felt like it would never come, but we finally started the race, and I began to feel significantly better once we began the race. Around the start of the race, I was having a bit of a hard time, but still trying to focus on keeping myself running. I was running with one of my friends and coaches, and it was really helping to talk with them while running, and trying to keep my mind off of all the things I was getting myself worried about. My stomach had been feeling extremely nauseous before the start of the race, but after we began and I started trying to focus on running and forget what I was thinking about, it started to go away. The more I tried to think about the happy thoughts like finishing the race, the less I started to think about the bad thoughts like if I didn’t finish the race, or if something else bad happened. I started feeling a lot better, and I was getting less worried as we got farther through the race.

As we were getting farther into the race, I was having a hard time running.  I was to distracted from being tired, but I was feeling happy about how I was doing so far, and that I was still going. It also really helped me feel better when at different points I saw friends and family on the sidelines cheering me on. It made me feel confident in myself, and I thought to myself that I should try my hardest to make them proud. At the beginning of the race, I was worrying if I would finish or not, but at the point I was at, I was starting to feel confident in myself that I would be able to finish. Me my friend and my coach kept going, and it was feeling like it was taking forever. Eventually though, I finished the race, and was feeling a lot happier. I was really tired and exhausted, but very proud of what I had accomplished. I sprinted across the finish line like my life depended on it, and was overjoyed once I crossed the line. I slowed down to a walk, and continued to go at that pace, smiling, and heading towards the tent where I got my medal. I walked through the crowds, got my medal, got the free water and snacks they were giving out, and then met up with the rest of my team. We all were congratulating each other on finishing, and how great we did. Later on my mom also found where me and my team were, and was telling me how proud of me she was, and it all made me feel happy with what I had accomplished.

After finishing, I thought back about how worried I had been at the beginning, and how unnecessary all of it was. When I was younger, I got worried before lots of big events that I participated in, and this was one of the biggest events I had participated in ever . There were so many events that I had tried in the race that was brand new to me. Like the fact that it was the first race longer than 9 miles that I had ever tried, or that it was only less than a year since I had started trying running and I was already trying the Broad Street Run. After seeing how I had reacted the morning of the race to all the worries I had, I felt pretty safe saying that I wasn’t the best person when dealing with change, especially large events like trying Broad Street the first time. I still felt pretty happy to say that I was able to finish the race, and all of my friends and family were all very proud of me. I was feeling very happy that I had made the decision to join Students Run at the beginning of the year, and even though it was very hard and I had a very difficult time dealing with my emotions, I wouldn’t want to experience it any other way.

Mi Mural

Posted by Shamus Keough in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · D Band on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 12:14 pm

Soy yo

Hijo de las Américas

Mi familia Irlandésa

Producto de America

Soy alto

Soy cómico

Me gusta jugar videojuegos

Me gusta correr

Me gusta comer bien

Somos Americanos

Hablamos inglés:

La lengua de libertad y trabajo duro

No somos Americanos. América está en nosotros

Y somos completos

In class we watched the show Growing up online, and digital nation by Front Line. The shows were about children growing up with all kinds of new technology from two different years. The most memorable thing for me was Ryan’s story about his suicide because of the shock of it. It’s important to watch these shows because they show things that could happen online. Why it's not important is because the show shows the extremes of what can happen, like Ryan’s story, while that happens very rarely. When I’m a parent, I will ask about what they do online, and not be that strict about it so they don’t feel like they need to lie. It’s important to talk to your family about this so they don’t have this rare occasion happen to them. I would tell the parent to just have their kid explain the things they do, and try to judge if its dangerous from seeing what they do.

Most of the people that recommended things that I should change said that they liked my design, but said I should change the sizes for some of the pictures I had. People were saying that I should have a little less blank space, so I made the car a little bigger and did the same with the cancer symbol and "Moose Man" logo. Besides that, I kept the slide mostly the same.

My Slide, Shamus Keough

This slide I created describes me in three ways, my love of video games, my love of cars, and my cancer experience. The car, a Maserati gran turismo, represents my passion for cars. I have loved cars since I was a little kid, and I still do now, and it has influenced many things in my life. For example, I have hundreds of hotwheels cars in our basement, and more in my room. The text “MooseMan” represents my love of video games, because that is what my name is online when I play these games. This has influenced me a lot because I have gotten very skilled at these games, and been recognized by a professional at these game. TheSlapTrain is a guy who makes youtube videos for a living, and makes a top 10 clips sent in by viewers show every week. I have gotten on 7 times now, and this influences me because this is what I spend almost all of my free time doing. Finally I added the zodiac symbol for cancer to represent my cancer experience as a child. I had leukemia from when I was 3 to when I was 6, and it influenced me because at the time, it was half and half if I would live. That is how this slide describes me.

So they start yelling at each other because of their opinions of the weather and Shamus comes and tells Ahmed and Christina to stop yelling at each other because everyone has a different opinion on the weather.

Situation #2: Tu v. Ud. & Dias de la semana

Christina is the teacher who will be giving Shamus a test where she will be reading off the Dias de la semana, and he will be writing them. They end the conversation, using the preguntas basicas.

who am I online

Untitled drawing

1:This was a class project on how we are perceived online, and we watched an interactive video on preventing cyber trolls, and this blog post is about the questions associated with the video

2: This video brings to mind cyberbullying, and its very similar to it too

3: Online I don't use my real name, but my user names are usually MooseMan, or DriftRacer88

4: I think people perceive me well, since I usually try not to be mean if i'm online, for example, I don't start fights while playing games online

5: To get a response, and then get enjoyment out of your suffering

6: Anonymity is good because people can’t find you in real life, and possibly hurt you. It's bad because people could post things that are really mean, and you wouldn't know who it is, and not be able to stop them

Blank Flowchart - New Page
My internet is provided by Verizon Fios, we then have a modem/router. We have our computer connected via Ethernet cable. Then we have an iPad, 4 i Phones, a wireless printer, an xbox, and a smart tv. In this class I have learned the different between the World wide web, and the internet, and have been taught how to use canvas, which was EXTREMELY helpful. Something I could tell other people is to think about all the devices you have that are connected to the internet and make a drawing of it and how its connected to the internet.
