The Biological Factors of Crime

While we typically use the terms “bad to the bone” or “bad blood” as a figure of speech for someone we don’t like, it turns out that the terms might be more literal than what one might assume.  Recently the new science in the world has allowed for studies to be done into the biological factors of a criminal's body to determine what factors can cause someone to become a criminal.

Some of the research that has been found into this subject involves chromosomes. Essentially what chromosomes are threadlike strands of DNA in the cell that carries the genes in a linear order. Alternations in the chromosomes are part of what can lead to disorders in the body like down syndrome. In regards to how this relates to criminal behavior is that having an an abnormal number of chromosomes can be causation for a dictator. With some diseases that are further added in their toxicity based upon environmental situation some people can become a powder keg of crime waiting to go off. Alternatively it becomes up to the legal defense team to prove that their is a direct correlation between the disease and the actual crime, otherwise it's just spectral

Another biological factor that becomes a component into crime is addiction. Addiction is basically and typically when someone takes a certain kind of drug that activates the reward centers of the mind so much so that people have an insatiable desire to recreate and keep that “reward” going. Within the biological underpinnings of this condition is a trait that causes addiction to happen  more due to inheritance from a family member, most likely a parent. However the law will still arrest and prosecute individuals but without seeking any medical assistance for them.

In conclusion the law and neuroscience are still a road from which much distance must be traveled on. While we need to prosecute people who break the law to ensure a more productive society, we must also know when the prisoner of the system may be just as much a prisoner of his body.

For my Capstone I worked on the preproduction process to be able to make a high quality short film. This project took many different forms as I edited and reworked it. From creating a TV pilot episode to trying to film this film, I decided instead to focus my capstone on the pre production aspects on making this film, in which the ultimate result would be that I am ready to start filming. Which I have thus far succeeded in! In fact I have already filmed some scenes, which will be reshot later, but certainly demonstrate some examples of how page changes to screen.

The bulk of this project and my work lies on the script that it all comes from, which was a more difficult process than I originally gave it credit for. Creating a storyline, characters and especially dialogue that you feel like most audience members would be able to listen and respond well too- are all very difficult things to do I found. Especially when the content of your script deals with a supernatural element as well.

I was able to learn a lot into the making of films and media creations, and how encompassing and difficult it must be when you're actually in the industry. From script writing to getting props and more it was an incredibly involved process. I have been able to get my movie at a good place and I hope you will all enjoy it when it comes out next year!!!

The Gay Gene?

Posted by Sean Morris in Science And Society - Best - E on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 4:52 pm

  • Science:

  • Science has been able to find some genetic differences between gay men and straight men. While their is not an exact "gay gene" that dominates ones disposition. However some of the differences that have been found include physical differences and sizes, 9 small genetic regions were found to have differences within the bloodstream and gay men share some similarities in a part of the X chromosome- Xq28.

However these are not definite ways to tell if someone is gay or not. Many factors from environment and family can all have ways of effecting whether someone is gay or not. Also sexuality is a fairly fluid thing, so its very difficult, if impossible to have an exact determination what makes someone gay or not.

  • Society:

There's a large societal misconception as to whether being gay is a choice or not, and the science shows that it clearly isn't. It is a genetic fact that we are born like this. However we want to be careful with this science with so many homophobic regions and households in the world we kinda don't want to have a single way to single out gay people, that could lead to some disastrous societal consequences.

  • Self:
As a gay man, I have sometimes been asked if its a choice or not, and I always knew it wasn't but was curious to the scientific reasons for it.  I was pleased to see some of the science for it, I hope that scientists proceed with caution while pursuing this further so that the future can remain safe for myself and people like me.

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 116

Posted by Sean Morris in Being Human - Giknis - C on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 5:24 am

The passage below is my own addition to improve The Road before McCarthy rejected it. His loss.

Creative piece:

The man and the boy walked amongst the dead forest with nothing but the gray sky lighting their way. Suddenly they saw a stranger in the middle of the path. He wore a dark dusty suit and a goatee around his face and hobbled on a farmer’s pitchfork. The eyes wanted to escape his skull and in certain light had a maroon color. His skin pale and burnt and like craquelure.

Hello friends.

Who are you? The man responded pointing his gun at him. What's your name?

What isn’t my name? The stranger responded, I have so many. You and your boy seem tired, would you like some bread and food? I have some in my home close by.

He could see the stranger’s long nails. No thanks.

You sure you don’t to even see where I am, kill me and take my food for yourself?

The man was taken aback. Why do you even suggest that?

Because you don’t seem like the man who’d do it, too good, yet anyway. His teeth looked like fangs when they smiled.

C'mon let's go. The man said to the boy as he took him away, keeping the gun on the stranger until he disappeared from sight.

The man and boy got lost in the forest for awhile and needed to retrace their steps. When they returned to the place they met the stranger he was nowhere to be seen, not even a trail of where he would have gone.

My rationale:

That rationale for this project is partially aimed to demonstrate its references the bible. In the Bible there is a passage of when the Devil tempts Jesus in the forest, and this passage is meant to reflect that. “The stranger” is meant to be the Devil and included various elements to what most people think of him as (goatee, pitchfork, suit, burns(to represent hellfire) and reddish eyes) and the boy and man simultaneously represent Jesus (in reference to how later the old man will wonder if the boy is god). Craquelure is a French word used to describe the crack on an oil painting as it ridges with age. Even if people don’t know the immediate definition (like other words Mccarthy uses, fitting into his narrative) it still creates a potential image in the reader's head that will stick with them. Since they have just come from the basement they are still a little shell-shocked from the events that transpired, so are acting out-of-character a bit by not exploring this potential route, especially as the stranger seemed particularly unsettling to them.

One of the larger themes presented in here is what does it mean to be good , and what does it mean to be evil where there is no law or large society to judge? In here it begins to raise that question with the stranger goading the man into a possible action that, while helpful to the man and boy, could be considered evil. And if the stranger gives the suggestion to kill him, does this take place in a part of the story where the man and the boy would be particularly desperate- after they see the basement of the cannibal’s. They would be starving but also pretty little mortally wounded after seeing their fellow man stoop to such low means to survive. They also had to wait to make sure no cannibal’s were chasing after them, so they would be especially tired and hungry from that. With the moral low and their stomach’s empty, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to have the stranger try take advantage of them. I don’t think the stranger has any real preference on whether he lives or dies, I think he’s more than a little mentally unhinged and might be trying to play what he would consider a “game” with people and in how they think.

The Beginners Guide to Love in the Past and the Future

Posted by Sean Morris in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 11:32 am
(Comparing “Beginners” and “The Taming of the Shrew”)

In the 417 years between when the play “The Taming of the Shrew” (1592) was written and the movie “Beginners” (2010) premiered, a lot has changed about what people see in relationships and love. In the play in one of the main characters is the titular “Shrew” Katherine, is a very loud mouthed and independent woman, at least until Petruccio marries her and she starts to become more subversive to him. In the movie “Beginners” is about a man, Oliver, who learns that his father; Hal, is not only dying but is gay, and reflects back onto his parents unhappy marriage that they were both forced into due to the circumstances and prejudice that existed at the time.

Both of these characters had very large personalities that were subverted due to their marriages and had to change themselves for it, although not for the better. “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Beginners” both show that changing yourself in a relationship will someone unhappy.

Kathrine:

“I pray you, sir is it your will to make me stale of  me amongst these mates?”

HORTENSIO

“Mates,” maid? How mena you that? No Mates for  you, Unless were of gentler, milder mold.

(Act 1. Sc . 1 lines 59-61)

In this scene Hortensio is talking with Kathrine about getting married, but Hortensio is arguing that little men would want her unless she was a calmer, gentler person in comparison to her rougher personality. As you can see , society, represented here by Hortensio, expects Katherine  to comply to what  it wants- which would be a calmer demeanor and attitude, though it is not in her own personal interests. To change herself for a marriage, with someone who; at this point in the play, Katrine doesn’t even know.

This is similar to much of Hal’s life in which he had to marry and live with a woman for most of his life, while  secretly being a gay man. This was due to the societal conventions of the times he lived in in which being gay was thought to be a mental illness, with his therapist, and to a certain degree his wife when she first proposed, telling him that as much. Hiding his true feelings and sexuality for fear of losing “everything” restricted  life, and even his happiness for what he would sexuality, emotionally or otherwise.

KATHARINA

...

“And place your hands below your husband's foot: In token of which duty, if he please, My hand is ready; may it do him ease.

PETRUCHIO

Why, there's a wench! Come on, and kiss me, Kate.

In this scene it truly shows how far Katherine has “fallen” from her former self. After a barrage of physiological attacks from Petruchio her fire has almost died down leaving her an obedient shell of her former self. She obviously isn’t happy with her new surroundings; who would like to be starved and sleep deprived? But in order to receive these basic human needs she needed to change- again quite dramatically- for the sake of the relationship, and even her own well being for the better part.

Screen Shot 2015-04-16 at 9.41.30 PM

However in contrast, when we see Hal refer back and started living his life as an out gay man, he is tremendously happier. With a loving relationship a plethora of new friends and hosting parties as demonstrated in an early montage in the movie he clearly is a happy, and presumably happier man. Because he changed himself for his relationship with Hal’s mother he wasn’t able to live the majority of his life as he wanted to. At one point he goes to a gay bar for the first time and tells his son it was more for young men, than him at 78. He states  “I don't want to just be theoretically gay. I want to do something about it.” showing that he’s lived his life so repressed from his true personality and that, now that his wife has passed away, he can live his life as he;s always wanted.

KATHERINE

No shame but mine. I must, forsooth, be forced, To give my hand, opposed against my heart,, Unto a mad-brain rudesby, full of spleen, Who wooed in haste and means to wed at leisure. I told you, I, he was a frantic fool, Hiding his bitter jests in blunt behavior, And, to be noted for a merry man, He’ll woo a thousand, 'point the day of marriage, Make friends, invite, and proclaim the banns, Yet never means to wed where he hath wooed. Now must the world point at poor Katherine And say, “Lo, there is mad Petruchio’s wife, If it would please him come and marry her!”

(act 3. sc2)

In this it shows Katherine's frustration in approaching an unhappy marriage with Petruchio in which she’ll be reduced to being “Petruchio's crazy wife”. Surely the fact that she is tough to marry doesn’t escape her but it hardly seems to bother her; especially as Petruchio remains her best option at this point. Up until this point her identity has been mostly about her, while not all positive- being the titular “shrew” and having a reputation in the plays story, however now with Petruchio in the picture, her identity will always be second to him, and her relationship to him.

Screen Shot 2015-04-16 at 9.34.46 PM
Screen Shot 2015-04-16 at 9.34.46 PM

In this revealing scene, Hal reveals to Oliver that Oliver’s mother knew that Hal was gay but that she claimed that she “could fix that”. This relates to Taming of the Shrew as they both show examples of people unhappy with change, and their true personalities being reverted to their relationship to someone they truly do not love. In Hall's case it shows, that while he enjoyed his life as a whole, he clearly wished he could have lived as he wanted to- being out as a gay man.

In conclusion both The Taming of the Shrew and Beginners show how changing oneself for a relationship doesn’t make them happy. What is interesting to note that while Taming of the Shrew shows someone who is getting deeper and changing himself for their unhappy relationship, Beginners shows someone; both literally and metaphorically, coming out of such a relationship and becoming happier with the life he has left. The messages presented in both The Taming of the Shrew and Beginners are truly universal and can be shown as a cautionary tale for someone not to go into such a relationship but can also be used as a means of inspiration to any poor individual's stuck in such a situation.

The Yellow Birds BM

Posted by Sean Morris in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 7:13 am

Analytical Essay:

No one ever stays the same. With people, it is common find that they are different depending on their years; someone aged 12 will be different than 22 or very different than 42 and even more different at 82. Aside from genetics, much of this comes through circumstance and change resulting around them. Some of this results in more worldly circumstances, like a leader in rights movement, others is more personal, like becoming  mature after becoming a parent. In the book “The Yellow Birds” by Kevin Powers it’s main character, Private Bartle, specifically dramatic changes as the result of his circumstances. Thoughtout the book, the author demonstrates that one’s self will either adjust to the changing world; or it will not, the former of which will be easier than the later.

In the Book “The Yellow Birds,” Bartle begins to recant his decision to join the army, remembering when he was bullied; “Pushed you around in the cafeteria,... because you liked reading books and poems… they’d call you fag.”(Pg. 145) This circumstance in Bartle's life, caused a big shift in his identity to show his manliness, and begins to set in motion the entire book. So his identity would forever be altered by this change in his world.

Kevin Powers later shows the change war has on people with the, self explanatory saying from Private Murph, with the thoughts from Private Bartle, “Holy shit, that bitch got murdered.” Murph said. There was no grief, or anguish, or pity in that statement.” (Pg.22) In sections that showed who Private Murph, demonstrated he was more on the sensitive side, who even kept a token of his old girlfriend with him, so to him to such a relaxed attitude to death, especially one so sudden is a bit of a culture shock for the readers. The author has shown this, in order to demonstrate how one needs to adjust to how their world has changed. Bartle and Murph would never have been able to survive as long as they did, or at all had they not trained themselves to see death on such a large and grand scale. And while it would have been hard to adjust to such a grim reality, not doing so would almost certainly have resulted in their death or at least a much more traumatic experience for the soldiers by the fact of having to adjust to such a dark reality in the moments that they lived in them. In this case “Bliss through Ignorance” is a common phrase that fits this situation.

The author also touched on this in an interview about the book, in which he stated “I was interested in trying to describe this state between apprehension and comprehension. That is one of the primary characteristics of the experience of being at war: it's so intense and you don't have time to process.” What the author is saying here is that trying to process it, like previously mentioned, is almost impossible to do, due to the traumatising atmosphere that war breeds and creates. Trying to process what happened in such a chaotic and volatile situation isn’t good for the human mind to take, so the book truly follows in the thesis and “adjusts) to the changing world”, in this case the changing world is the war that they are in and are forced to adjust to this extreme circumstance.

The changing world thesis can be attributed to the the basic theory of evolution- and how those that are able to adapt are also the ones the survive. In the book “The Yellow Birds”  Kevin Powers has shown how changing world and circumstance has affected his characters and the reasoning behind it. Within an individual's lifetime the world will likely change and sift many times, either in political, social or some other kind of feeling many times, as shown in “The Yellow Birds” and demonstrates how important for an individual's lifespan to evolve with the times.

Narrative Essay:

Evolution's a funny thing isn't it? How nature becomes the ultimate judgement on what stays and what leaves. Try try as we might, eventually nature, both outside and; in this case specifically to ourselves chooses what stays and what leaves. Within the past few years I have; evolved so much so that I consider myself almost, if not completely different from the boy I was, even five years ago. Most, if not all of it included changes to my own world, big and small, that would have lasting effects in me.

For a long time I was bullied, because I was perceived as being gay, even though I wasn’t comfortable even thinking about the possibility myself. I had this terrible notion, from what I gathered from being around those classmates, that being gay meant I couldn't be the best of myself, that I couldn’t be the “ultimate me” in a sense. However on one of our last class trips as part of our 8th grade perks, I began to feel sad I would have to say goodbye to a particular classmate. I didn’t know him particularly well, nor did I consider myself to be good friends with him, but I felt a twinge of sadness at the prospect of saying goodbye, more so than many other classmates.

Eventually on the trip I had considered the idea that I might be attracted to him but kept going back and forth on it. Eventually when we got to the restaurant, a Chinese one at that, a received a fortune cookie. And would you have it I received the most, situation appropriate fortune. “In order to get the Rainbow, you have to get through the rain.” And when I saw it I felt as though the fates were whispering, or more accurately screaming at me and through it I felt a wide cocktail of feelings that pointed towards that I might be a little, if not completely gay. To delay the inevitable is to prolong needless suffering, I’ve often found. In this case it was very soon, that I started to accept who I was and it made life easier for myself a lot more than if I had continued to neglect that part of my life.

After coming out i was able to be more open with myself and to others, I felt more risk taking and felt I could connect to people since connecting to myself. I often think of it as if my ribs were broken open and my soul flew free. Allowing myself to be stuck inside of what I had as a pre-notion of my life wouldn’t have been at beneficially to me, instead it ultimately would have been harmful for my mental well being. Adapting to my changing world was unquestionably for the better and am glad I did so.

“In the Flesh” and Social Issues

Posted by Sean Morris in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 3:28 am

Issues that affect society’s current status quo have long been represented in popular culture and has been addressed in numerous TV shows, one of which is the Award-winning BBC series “In the Flesh”. In the show, it presents a modern day world in which, in the aftermath of a zombie uprising, the government has found medication to replace the dead brain cells in zombies, with living functional ones, basically restoring who they were before, however their skin pigment and eyes are still in an undead state, but otherwise they are essentially fully functional members of society. They require daily medication to keep them from turning into a rabid state, in which they crave human flesh. These zombies, or suffers of Partially Deceased Syndrome (PDS) as they call them in the show, have found themselves at the subject of discrimination that can easily reflect current social issues. Through this plot device, “In the Flesh” shows parallels to social issues that people struggle with today such as homophobia, beauty standards and racism.

One example of a modern day issue that “In the Flesh” parallels is homophobia. The main character who this can compare this to is Rick Macey. In the show Rick is a soldier who died in 2009 during the war in Afghanistan, resurrected as a zombie the following year after his death (like everyone else in the show who died in 2009), later received medication for his rabid state and returned home to a father who is outspoken in his hatred of PDS suffers or “rotters” as he calls them. Rick and his father are both in complete denial about who he is and where even willing to coldly kill a rabid PDS suffer. However once Rick comes to terms with his identity his father cold- heartedly kills him. This can relate to any coming out story in which the response is negative, like 19-year old Daniel Pierce in Georgia who in August 2014, came out and received a  “...wound came from his stepmother, who punched him in the mouth during the altercation that can be overheard in the video.” The TV series is able to show that even someone’s family can attack and hate them for who they are, which is a difficult situation that many like Rick Macey and Daniel Pierce find themselves in. When someone can see how horrible a situation is from the outside there can greater action taken against it, like on the support Daniel Pierce has received since the video went out from his friend allowing him to stay in his house to the multiple videos of support and outcry made in response to the original video. Like the Daniel Pierce video, the scene that Rick is found dead by his own father’s hands is suppose to be gut wrenching to the audience and both create a genuine pity for these people/ characters, giving a name, face and tragedy to their suffering.

Another example comes from PDS users wearing makeup and how it reflects standards of beauty, especially in women. In the show it is considered the norm for PDS suffers to wear cover-up moose and contacts to hide their visible undead features, however certain PDS inflicted members consciously choose not to wear makeup and take pride in their natural self. One character who does this is Amy Dyer, who contracted such hatred from a bigoted man that he forcibly applied makeup on her. This is a reflection on beauty standards in today's, particularly in women and the pressure to wear makeup to ‘keep up appearances’. To combat this stigma celebrities like Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow, like Amy Dyer, have proudly gone on display and have chosen not to wear makeup to try to change the standard of beauty. With this example it is easy to see not only a reflection onto a modern day issue in the show but that there are people; good, kind, and great people who actively fight against it however they can.

A third example comes from a remark that was said in regards to a man who shot and killed several PDS suffers, but received a reduced prison sentence because technically he was “only taking half a life.” This can be connected racism and how crimes against minorities are not always met with the appropriate justice. Take for example, the Ferguson Shooting case in which officer Darren Wilson shot and killed an unarmed young black man and has not been arrested as of 3 months since the incident. The episodes were broadcast before this incident occurred which demonstrates that the show can be relatable to subjects and current events that hadn’t even occurred when they were first made. The Ferguson shooting is just one of many very similar incidents that the show parallels in which minorities have been killed and whose killers haven’t received justice, showing it’s clear relevance in today’s society.

Although the television series "In the Flesh" may only seem important to It's fans, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about social injustice in the world today. In the show suffers of Partially Deceased Syndrome (PDS for short), face discrimination that is akin to real life examples of bigotry such as racism, homophobia or standards of beauty. Representations of issues that plague society on a television series can sometimes shed light to a broader audience and call attention to a lesser known stigma. An example is the popular series “Orange is the New Black” and how that lead to more knowledge on the Transgender issue so much that it’s Trans cast member was on the cover of Time magazine. Now, the series “In the Flesh” can shine further light on issues like homophobia, beauty standards and racism.

Occupy Wall Street: False Advertising Beware!

Posted by Sean Morris in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 10:28 am

On September 17th, 2011, the first of several ‘Occupy Wall Street (O.W.S)” protests emerged to protest against economic inequality. O.W.S wanted a more fair economy that allowed more than 1% of the nations population to hold the majority of its money. To promote their protest and message they produced a series of ads to reach out and grab the public. However, the movement stopped its bigger protests and later moved onto smaller projects. As you can see, despite them getting their message out the movement fell though. This is due to the fact, that while they produced multiple ads- they rarely explain Occupy’s message.Occupy Wall Street’s ad’s fail to convey their message and often instead promote the downfall of the 1% and Wall Street rather than the personal success of the 99%.

One of O.W.S’s famous ads is the image of a woman dancing barefoot on the metal bull statue (a symbol for Wall Street in this and many other ads) as protesters in hoodies and gas masks emerge from a gas, some bearing weapons, and at the top the ad it asks- “what is our one demand?” If Occupy’s message is for economic equality, then what about this poster represents that? A ballerina atop a metal bull or the faceless, menacing group of people that look like they are about to riot shows absolutely nothing for equal benefits and for a reduction between the classes. O.W.S is clearly not showing what can be achieved by their want for economic equality, instead they demonstrate an unclear imagine that is supposed to excite people who are part of the 99%. The image is suppose to excite them because it shows something of a rebellion, presumably against the very wealthy and Wall Street itself, which is suppose to make the audience feel as though that they are part of this powerful movement. But because they make the crowd look like a massive riot and with an apparent disrespect of the bull statue by dancing barefoot on it- don’t show a change to a new and more equal world. Instead all it does is represent a massive rebellion or an ‘uprising’ for the downfall of the very wealthy. By them pursuing this, rather than some image of  the 99%s gaining better treatment and a more equalized economy they fail to show their message and instead promote the downfall of Wall Street and the very wealthy.

Another ad shows a minimalist image of a bull being tied and held down by rope with the tagline “the beginning is near” . The bull, as previously mentioned , is a symbol for Wall Street and with that the very wealthy, and the tying it down represents a literal downfall of them. By tying it down and pretending its like a wild animal, it dehumanizes residents of Wall Street and the wealthy and doesn’t reinforce any kind or equality desire. Instead it seems to scream ‘bring them down’ rather than to demand a fairer economic system and ,if anything, shows a progression more backwards than forwards. And while it says “the beginning is near” it doesn’t give the slightest indication upon what is near. If anything this can be more easily converted into a rodeo poster than an ad promoting economic equality. So, clearly Occupy is

promoting and glorifying a downfall for Wall Street and the Wealthier class than actually presenting facts, data or information about why they are doing it.

The third ad I shall be discussing is a cartoon that shows a mob tearing down a stature of the Monopoly man with its podium saying “Wall Street” and the caption being “Occupy Wall Street we are the 99 percent”.  Now by having a stature torn down it does, indisputably, show a want for a downfall. Instead of easily showing people of a poorer class being uplifted to seeing eye to eye with the statute, it is being brought down. So instead of progressing forward, the ad shows something akin to progressing backwards. Additionally, by having the ad represent Wall Street and the very wealthy as the Monopoly man is another act in dehumanizing them by presenting them as cartoonish characters rather than actual people. To further promote their downfall, one of the people in the crowd raises their hands in a celebratory fashion, telling the audience that this is a good thing. By doing that they promote tearing down statues of cartoon men rather than make an effort at trying to teach about the economic inequalities. So rather than to take the opportunity to promote a fairer economy Occupy instead produces ads that are meant to awaken people’s systematic prejudice against wealthier people. By doing this they lose their message to an almost entirely different idea.

Occupy Wall Street’s ad’s fail to convey their message and often instead promote the downfall of the 1% and Wall Street rather than the personal success of the 99%. Occupy wall street was a movement that seemingly came as quickly as it went. While it still technically goes on today, it is in a much less greater degree than it was almost three years ago. Part of which could have been the downfall for this was their advertising techniques into the general public. What they missed is something that Joseph Goebbels discussed in his speech saying that “It is not just the fantasy of a few people among the people, rather it becomes the idea of the rulers, the circles that have power. The view does not only preach, but it is carried out in practice. Then the idea becomes the worldview of the state.” What Goebbels means by that and how it relates to Occupy, is that propaganda must be an idea that people can see take power. However what Occupy missed with their ads was that the ad’s perceived idea was more in line with extremists then with average Americans who just want to have the same rights as those wealthier than them. It is interesting to note how much people systematically will, at first glance, perceive one idea presented to them but in actuality the same idea can mean something entirely different. It’s a fault in history and humanity, that has been repeated multiple times and Occupy was simply not an exception, and most definitely will not be the last to suffer from it.

What is a Life Without a Sum of Sadness?

Posted by Sean Morris in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 10:09 pm

(Inside of a nursing home, private room an old man-Eugene sits at a table filled with papers and medication and he’s looking outside. It is in the middle of the afternoon about 2-7 Pm on a colorful fall day. He turns and looks at the audience, he has both sadness and happiness in his face and tone at this moment, he is content)

Eugene: I’m going to die. I’m 92 and as you’d suspect I’m not in the best of health. But I’m going out on my own terms. I gave a ring to all the people I want to say goodbye to and my daughter will come by with my granddaughter and I’ll say goodbye to them and tell them I love them. My nurse will wheel me outside to see my last sunset over this beautiful valley in the middle of Fall. Then I’ll take a few pills (Chuckles) and a last sip of wine and say goodbye to the world. But I’m not scared. I think that (Pauses and thinks for a quick second) that when you get around my age death stops being so scary. You’ve become so used to the pain, loss and cold that the idea of relief, going someplace happier, friendlier and… I dunno warmer I guess, is (Thinks) is soothing.

(Phone rings, looks at it and picks up) Hello? (Shocked) Elizabeth? (Lowers down the phone looks at the audience, puts phone up to ear) What do you want Elizabeth? Oh You want me to call you Liz? Well, maybe you could have mentioned that sometime over the past, Oh, I don’t know 40 years? Oh, you don’t want to fight, then what the hell did you want? (Pause) Sorry? (Taken aback, but still enraged) you're sorry? No. No, you see (motions with his hand like she’s in front of him) you don’t get that. (Screaming) You don’t get to leave me and your daughter for 40 fucking years, don’t reach out at all then say you're ‘sorry’ like you knocked over a damn dinner!

What they hell are you thinking? Oh, ‘you needed more in life’ yeah I got that back awhile ago- I’m asking why are you talking to me now? (Pause) Wanted to clear things up? What before I kicked the damn bucket? Well let me tell you this: Things will NEVER be cleared- you got that? And you want to know why? Not because of the fact that you left me. I could have lived with that. I could have handled that. But leaving your daughter? (Pause, visibly saddened) She was eleven. ELEVEN FUCKING YEARS OLD AND HER MOTHER JUST FUCKING LEFT HER. Do you know how long she cried? How many times in the night I- not you- I had to hug her and tell her it wasn’t her fault when in my own room I was falling to pieces on my own.

But afterwards (Pause) she graduated from her collage with the highest marks and let me tell you- I was there- not you- but I was there in the crowd giving a standing ovation with tears over MY (Pointing to himself, tears rolling his cheek) beautiful daughter. I saw her get an incredible, wonderfully paying job. I saw her marry an amazing, funny, smart and handsome man. I held my granddaughter for the first time and now (Pause) she’s going to be just as good, if not better than her mom. But you? (Makes a face) I bet you don’t even know her name do you?

(Pause) What? No, NO! NO! NO! STOP JUST STOP! I don’t want your pity! I don’t want your anger! I don’t want your apologies! (Sobbing and yelling greater) I... DON'T... WANT... YOU!!!! (Pause) WHAT DO I WANT? I- I- I WANT YOU TO DIE! Please. Do that for me, would you? Would you please just drop dead right now and I can forever be at peace because I know that you will never crawl back into their lives again. After everything you've done to me- to us you could have at least given that! Hello? HELLO!? (Pauses calmly puts down phone, then suddenly then in a  burst of anger picks up the phone and throws it across the room hitting the wall, knocks everything off the table, stands up and flips over the table and knocks down his chair before he falls over, he's on his back aching in pain he starts whispering with his eyes closed still tossing and turning. HE IS NOT DYING he is just in pain, but great pain nonetheless) You could have given me that. You could have given me that. You could have given me that. You could… you could...

Sean Morris Q1 English Benchmark

Posted by Sean Morris in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 8:19 pm

“Are you British?”

This question has followed me through my years on this planet even though I was born in Philadelphia and lived there for all of my life and only went outside of the country twice. I never noticed the voice myself, at least until, if I remember correctly, people who I have known for years starting asking me “Are you, like, British?”

(Insert sassiest deep voice)  “Yes because I’ve been British all along and I’m revealing it to all you now so I can have a coup to overthrow the United States government and reclaim the colonies for our Mother England.”

While I might not have exactly thought that; it was a bit of an annoyance. But even after I seemed to explain to everyone of my fellow students in Middle School/ elementary school (it was a shared school)  it seemed to follow me everywhere I went.

South Carolina: “Are you British?”

Harrisburg: “Are you British?”

Karate class: “Are you British?”,

People to People: “Are you British?”,

Britain: “Are you British?”

Ok, I’m not sure they asked me that everywhere but it sure did feel like it. I’m not entirely sure when it began although my guess would be somewhere between the 4th and 6th grade. Mostly because I remember an experience in the fourth grade but I think I started getting asked it more frequently in the 6th grade and onwards.

So why is it British? I’ve never even been to Britain until last summer, if anything I might chalk it up to my watching of British programming like “Doctor Who”, “Miss Marple”, “Inspector Poirot” any number of old movies and eventually “Sherlock”, “Being Human” and many more. It could have a sort of similar effect of the Key and Peele skit and how when we are around a similar group of people we start- either unknowingly or consciously sounding like them (Key).  It also could be the fault of the infamous and world known voice changer known as puberty. Yes, thank you puberty for all your delights, including- but not limited to- the inescapable red mountains on our faces, awkwardness to seemly every situation- particularly social and the constant asking about any perceived “what is my life” even if the question makes no sense at all. Even then I ask what is a “British voice” within the whole of Great Britain there are multiple countries- including England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales- who each have various accents on their own that people can narrow down and identify to a single town.

So where does this notion of a single “British” accent come from? Well for starters I believe that when they say “British”- rather than having be some odd daunting mixture of Scottish, Welsh, English and Irish accents together are some type of super accent- I think that they mean an English accent. And when they say English, I would guess it was the same deep and sophisticated voice that people like Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, The Royal Family or any of the like. Not to make myself a gloater or anything like that- I just imagine that when Americans or other cultures think of the ‘standard’ accent from England thats what’s comes to mind. I wonder why I seem to make such an impression though, its not like I ask somebody about their accent every single time they talk.

I can roughly remember a time when I first started to become aware of my change of voice. I think it was in fourth or sixth grade and my father was in a parent teacher conference. I attended the conference- not because of bad scores or anything of the sort, students could just come to the conference. So at one point I think the teacher had acknowledged the apparent ‘fact’ of my British accent. This took my father aback for in all his years as my parent he never saw my voice as British- it was just his son’s natural voice. And the fact of the matter is that despite all first impressions I’m not ‘impersonating anything or anyone’ I just talk in the same voice I have since the beginning of my life. And if someone was to ask if I could do a ‘normal’ accent then what am I supposed to do. I am talking normally and I always have been. My mother didn’t even notice until a restaurant waitress asked about my voice about three to five years ago.

I think I can remember another event which was when I first met my advisory at the Science Leadership Academy. It was mid May 2012 and the weather fitted the time of month. Never the less I dressed in my black suit with a grey shirt and tie to give off a good first impression. We all entered the library and sat around in a circle to all meet, greet and see each other. As we all introduced ourselves, if I remember correctly, when I first presented I had actually surprised people when I first spoke. Most likely not due to my introduction; if that was the case I’d very much like to know what in the seven hells I said that shocked everyone in that room. I suspect it was due more to my apparent accent if anything. I’ll bet their minds were racing think “Yooooo, we got a British kid!, That’s what’s up!, Turn up!” or whatever is the way in bloody hell 8th grade students process information.

So at this point I’m sure you're wondering “Does he even want this voice?” well the truth is- I do. I’ve always thought that the English had a very nice, very eloquent and sophisticated voice. It normally comes off well and to be thought having a similar voice is quite a privilege and its lovely when people give me compliments about it. Besides it might  even open me up to career opportunities perhaps. For example, just the other day a former student at our school, who works as a DJ offered me a rather large sum of money if I was able to speak at a event and say a few things like “turn it up”. I was quite flabbergasted, I didn’t believe him at first (even now I’m still a bit hesitant of the believability) but he assured me that he earns six times more than what offered me at a single event. I sat there in my white suit for picture day, perplexed at what just transpired. Here I was using the voice that I have had all my life and suddenly I was offered the opportunity at a financial bonus. Naturally, like any reasonable human I told him I was interested but at this time I have not heard further details about it but when I do I shall try my best to make it.

I may not be British born, if I have a voice that people are willing to pay me for then by golly I'll wear a Union Jack tie. And I don’t find it particularly degrading to do that, I think it’d be rather fun to be honest. I am a person that likes to entertain others, in fact I think I’d like to go into the entertainment industry anyway to become an actor. (As well as other things like writer and possibly director, but for now lets talk about acting.) Additionally it seems that would work in my benefit as it appears every actor and actress and their mother are some way foreign. While I might be American, I’ve found in my life that it doesn’t really matter in the world of first impressions- if you talk it- for all people know, you are it. So if my voice is going to be a career booster in any way then I’ll English-it-up more if need be. While it could be potentially annoying to constantly clear up the fact I am not British, it's certainly a bit of an honor and potentially fortuatius to be thought as one. In the end I wouldn’t change my voice for an “American”, but if I did change my voice in anyway, I would probably make it deeper- that way it comes off as even more English.

Reflection- Element Project

Posted by Sean Morris in Art - Freshman - Hull on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 8:29 pm
Inquiry -  This project reflected inquiry because we needed to ask ourselves how we would do each step. For example when we used the cutting tools we needed to ask ourselves questions like: "how will I cut out the finer details of my drawing" and etcetera.

Research - The project reflected research when we needed to find out what our mineral is used for. So in order to find out what would be an acceptable design we needed to research online what it has been used for.

Collaboration - The project reflected collaboration because often times I collaborated with fellow students and my teacher for my concepts. For example I went to a supervisor student to collaborate ideas about what to have for my final concept.

Presentation - It reflected presentation because we often tried to smoothen out final details to make the final product look nicer. For example when I was cutting into my design I often had to work out the final details to get the design I was looking for.

Reflection- The project reflected reflection because it allowed us to compare some of our previous looks to others and see which one worked the best. An example of this is how we did more than one print so if one we did didn't turn out just like how we wanted we could know what to change for the next one.

Final Perspective Drawing, 2013, perspective

Posted by Sean Morris in Art - Freshman - Hull on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 12:51 pm
a. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before?
One thing that I learned specifically is how to draw tiles on ceilings and floors.

b. How did learning this thing make your drawings better?

This helped make my drawings better because they allowed me to make a more accurate room.

c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

If I did this assignment again I would try to see if my back wall was not as small so I could have more space to draw.

d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

My advice to someone who has never drawn one point perspective is that to make sure you have a clear vanishing point otherwise you can't do your drawing.

e. What resource helped you the most and why?

The resource that I believed helped me the most were the guidelines on Moodle because since I was doing the same wall as on the website it helped me with how to accurately create the room better than if I had used another wall.

Sean Morris Geometry benchmark

Posted by Sean Morris in Geometry - Thompson on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 9:16 pm
-    How does this project relate to the real world?

This project relates to the real world in several ways. A primary way it relates to the real world is for architects. It can relate to architects because by using the methods demonstrated architects can plan out how tall a building is which can be useful when adding new features onto a building. Another way it relates to the real world is it is useful to business that need to tear down a building so they can know the total area of destruction would approximately be. It is also useful for realtor who need the know how tall a house or apartment is so that they can give that data to their customers.

-       What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?

The most exciting portion of this project was to go outside and see the method in work. I thought this was the most exciting because I thought it was interesting to see the variables being used hands on here. For example on how our individual heights could effect our answers. I thought the least exciting portion was having to do the verifications. I thought this was the least exciting because at sometimes my verifications didn’t match up with the heights I had in my paper so it was just frustrating to have to constantly fix and change map on something that I believe should have been easier.

-       What did you learn from completing this project?

I learned more on how to use stick method correctly. I learned the various factors that could play into using picture verification. I learned on how to use the mirror method correctly in a real life situation. I learned that there are many different ways on how to verify your calculations for a building and what different factors play into them. The project has taught me a new appreciation for Geometry and how potentially complex it can be at many times. I found that even relatively simple buildings can become  much more complex when using its measurements and calculating its measurements in Geometry problems.

When you are in a new and strange environment and your'e pressed for time it can be difficult. In this lesson you will learn on how to ask what time it is  and how to know what someone's response would be. The chart below has been made so that you can try to learn how to say the times in Spanish. (note: when you say menos cuatro you must say the hour that is after the time, EX: 5:45= Son las seis menos cuatro). Below is a video demonstrating a real life situation of a student in a new school asking when to change times.

If you ever meet someone that you like and want to go out with them but they don't speak total English, it can be difficult. In this lesson you will be able to learn the spanish days of the week from the multicolored chart below. Remember: in the spanish language the days of the week start with Monday, not Sunday and that the days of the week do not begin with a capital letter. Below is a video to demonstrate a real life situation of a boy asking someone out for a day in the week.
