Week 11 - LINK • Artist's statement

For week one I've created an art piece that is a ninja. This took me about 2 and a half hours to draw. I really like this one because the picture I viewed to draw this, the head was different. I wanted to be creative and draw a ninja face with the body so I looked up a picture and added a different head.
For week two, I drew multiple pieces, the assignment was line drawings. I looked up original photos from google images and lined drew them my own style and it come out really good for my first time It took me a little longer than two hours, about three. 
For week three it was a little different from usual. The assignment was called shape digital drawing, we used a website on our computers to create this. My idea of this was a beach. Most may not see it that way but it was different and colorful and I just had fun with it.
On week four, the assignment was called illusion of space. I decided to draw a box room in the ground and with the latter on the side to really bring out the illusion. This was a little difficult for me because with art like this it takes more time and you really have to add the detail to bring the drawing out. If I was to do this again I will take more time on it.
For my week 5 drawing, the assignment was named texture drawing. This one provide a lot of detail to really get the texture of an object. It was a lot hard but I tried. I looked at a plant on a picture and just focused on one of the foods to really bring it out with the shade and lines.
For week 6, this assignment was Value drawing. We practice to draw the still life of things and I was a little creative. I took a picture right in front of me on my phone and drew what I seen on the table. I added a lot of detail and shade to really show what I saw at that moment. Then I used a pastel and darkened the back to show what to focus on.
For my last week, week 7. the assignment was Elements of art drawing. Basically, we had to take everything we drew this whole semester and draw it in one picture. I thought about it and said a landscape would be the best thing to draw because it has lines, texture and provides a lot of detail. So the picture I chose was perfect because there was a lot of that in there. I didn't really like coloring it but it still was okay.

For this quarter we focused on creating drawings using the 7 elements of art and different mediums.
The thumbnail figure sketches were drawn on newsprint with sharpie while the final figure drawing was made on newsprint with pencil. I wanted to challenge myself with this assignment as I have a bit of experience with figure drawing, so I used a contortionist for my reference.
The first two line drawings were more figure sketches of classmates made with pencil and sketchbook paper. The continuous line still life was made with sharpie on sketchbook paper under a time constraint of five minutes.
I have very little experience with digital art but I didn't want to just make a few basic patterns, so I made this odd pop-art-esque rift full of eyes. I used a layering tool and bright contrasting colors to create some depth.
For the illusion of space drawing I took a sketch of a leviathan from my sketchbook, gave it a few touch-ups, and created a shaded background for it to blend into. The goal was to make it look as if it was swimming out from the gloom. The drawing was made with pencil on sketchbook paper.
The texture drawing was rather tricky. I used colored pencils and tried to apply different amounts of pressure to try and give some depth to items in the still life. The required textures didn't exactly lend themselves all that well to tomatoes and green beans and there were more textures than indevidual objects, so I ended up applying individual textures to individual artichoke segments.
The value drawing was made using charcoal on newsprint. For my reference, I posed a stuffed bat with a few pieces of fabric and tried to capture the different values created by the folds in the fabric.
The elements of art drawing was made using pencil for the base lineart, gone over with inking pens, and colored with a single magenta colored pencil. I wanted to use high-contrast colors and shading to give the character as much presence as possible.

This quarter in Art class, we were given 7 assignments alongside this blog post. These assignments focused on many different elements that are commonly utilized in art. Most of these assignments were done with pencil, besides one, which was done online.

The first week focused on line drawings. This was the assignment I put the most work into. The goal was to research different poses, and draw the people accurately. It was interesting to view how different poses or movements have the ability to change an entire piece of art. I preferred using pencil for this assignment, due to constantly having to erase or redo certain parts.

The next assignment was the line drawing. I learned about the technique of line size. Lines have the ability to change a piece of art depending on how large or thin they are. I decided to draw more simple objects to see how I could change line size.

The digital drawing was the third assignment. Through this assignment, I realized that I preferred drawing with pencil over drawing digitally. There are a lot of different buttons and options for online drawing, even with a simple website like the one I used. However, online drawings do seem easier for different tasks over using pencil, such as more complex drawings. I learned that an online medium does have positives to being used.

For the next assignment, we had to create the illusion of space. Through this assignment, I was able to strengthen my knowledge of one-point perspectives and gain a greater understanding of shading and value, which would be used later.

The next assignment was to practice drawing with texture. To being, I drew many examples of common textures. This helped me realize the importance of texture. It can create depth and more realistic art. I believe texture is best done with a pencil as well, as I found myself erasing incorrect textures frequently.

The value drawing focused on using shading and tones of an object. This assignment felt the most difficult to adjust to, due to the amount of factors that had to be considered. Light sources and shading techniques, alongside other factors, were all needed to create a realistic value drawing. I used pencil again because I felt that shading is best done with a pencil. I spent a good portion of my studio time researching how to create a realistic tone when a light source exists.

For the elements of art drawing, I decided to draw a flower. I believed that a natural object could best use all of the elements we learned in art class overall. I used pencil and colors to create this piece because I had to focus on value and line size. This drawing made me realize that it takes a lot of effort to create a piece that uses multiple elements of art, which I had not done before. This allowed for an interesting process and end result

Overall, I thought this quarter helped strengthen my understanding of the fundamentals of art. Each week presented a different and new topic, and I was able to use most of them in later assignments.

This quarter featured an interesting idea of practicing one element of art for each assignment, and then using all of those skills to create one piece in the end. This has caused each piece of art I have created to be a unique experience.

The first piece of art I have created was a figure of a man in a suit and fedora looking out while shielding his eyes with his hand. I’ve heard the phrase, “suffer for your art,” before. If by “suffer,” you mean, “became highly uncomfortable by the surprising number of photos of people either naked or scantily clad on that website,” then I have suffered for this piece of art. In fact, I just chose one pose to reference and tried to draw it from memory to avoid glimpsing any more nude photos that could mentally scar me. That aside, I created two versions of “Figure of a Suit Man.” Noticing that the examples I saw in the assignment didn’t focus too much on facial features, I gave him sunglasses in the first one, and the second one, I just obscured his face with shadow. I also decided to swap the shades of the pants and shoes in the second version. I also took the opportunity to practice shading/making shadows in my art.

For week 2, I drew a phoenix. It was only supposed to be an outline of a phoenix, with small details like an eye. However, at Ms. Hull’s suggestion, I colored it in. I used orange yellow for most of the body, orange for the chest and wings, and red orange for the tips of the wings. I also added some shorter lines going off the outline on the neck, chest, and wings to give the appearance of feathers.


My next art piece is exactly what the title implies: a bunch of shapes and colors. I spent an hour messing around with circles, squares, and different colors and seeing what I made. I would have done it longer, but I was experiencing technical difficulties when I tried using it on Day 2. Some of the more noteworthy pieces were one featuring the outlines of circles and squares that took on a blueprint-like look, one where I put rectangles in larger rectangles to make it look like they were stacked on top of each other. There was another one where I used a similar strategy, but I used all the colors of the rainbow instead of fire colors.

The Dragon and the Bird was drawn to show the illusion of space. I went for showing off size, drawing the bird as a tiny speck to show how massive the dragon was compared to it. I tried drawing the dragon’s hind leg in the picture, but it came out awkward, so I drew it so the tail was obscuring the hind leg. This piece of art also helped me practice drawing backgrounds as well as eyes and folded dragon wings.

The hardest part of the Vegetable Still Life Recreation was deciding where and how to incorporate the textures. I could think of an idea on how to incorporate some, but not all, of the textures into the piece. For example, I used the first texture, which consisted of simple lines and dots strewn about, for the texture of an orange’s skin. I also used the one with vertical lines stacked on top of each other to represent tree bark, and the alternating vertical and horizontal lines to illustrate a checkerboard-patterned tablecloth. I also tried to use the textures in the vegetables themselves, like the onion half, as well as the scenery.

I decided to recreate an image of a shaded sphere on a table on the website, since it seemed like an easy project to practice on. I shaded the sphere using the method practiced in a past shading practice assignment, where I used four different tones of shade: light, semi-light, semi-dark, and dark. I used the strategy of mapping out each shaded part, erasing the borders, and then shading it in.

The final piece that incorporates all of the skills practiced in the previous assignments is known as Griffin at Sunset. It is tied with The Phoenix and The Dragon and the Bird as my favorite project of this quarter. I was going to draw a phoenix at first, but I decided to practice drawing a different mythical creature. I used each skill in the order they were learned as I drew the picture. First, I drew the outline of the griffin. Next, I added things like the eye and feather detail on the lines. Then, I added the wing and other body details. I drew out the background, making the tree and castle smaller than the griffin to give the illusion that they were farther away. I then added texture to the griffin’s feathers and fur, the castle, the tree branch, and the leaves in the wind. Finally, I added shadows and color to the drawing. I also colored the parts where the sunlight hit lighter than the rest.

This quarter, there were many different yet similar pieces done. While doing the pieces for this quarter, I noticed that most of them were much more time consuming than from what I could compare to the last quarters. The assignments were very flexible in terms of how you created it and what it was. Many of the assignments were free hand structured. In attempt to do good work, I tried out different techniques like tracing, different styles like straighter lines, and more. I would say that my favorite assignment was on the computer when we could do whatever we wanted. This was fun because we could use a lot of different colors and different shapes. It did not necessarily have to be anything specific, which was a nice break from our other assignments. For these assignments we did this quarter, I noticed that we did a lot of sketch-like drawings. This was very fun to do since I could test myself and how steady my hand is. Overall, I would say this was not my favorite quarter, but it was memorable.


Q4-4 Slideshow, Blog, Artist’s Statement

Some of the art that I created for this quarter were all drawings. The drawings weren’t hard, but it took lots of patience. I usually traced my drawing before outlining them with a dark pencil or Sharpie marker. The inspiration for these drawing came from recreated artist pieces that I found on google. One of my favorite drawings that I have created was the Line Drawings. My line drawings took the most time and I was more detailed when drawing them.

The one main material that I used for all of my artwork was a pencil. I also used charcoal to add different shades on grey to my artwork to make it more realistic. Outside sources for shading was different shading form images and website that I searched on google. I used the charcoal during my studio time because it can get real messy at times. Then I used color pencils to bring my art to life and less dreary and dark.

One of the many things that happened while creating my art was that I learned how to expand my horizons. My previous artwork was focus around the saem ideas for each quarter. As for this quarter, I looked at examples that seem harder for me to design in order for me to explore different art techniques. I would like people to know that the process of creating my artwork was a challenge because I don’t like drawing mostly. So I got over my discomfort and excelled from it.

Q4 Reflection Of Art Creations

For this quarter I have created very passionate drawing. Starting from figure drawing and getting down the bases of the drawing a body. Next with line drawing it creates stories without picking the pencil and thinking about it. The digital drawing was a new concept for me because I never really thought that you can create art with it. I really like how we combined everything we learn and created to make one whole drawing. 
When I think of art I feel like you need to have a lot of passion because it's being patient for realizing all that stress. That's why I love art and being surrounded with amazing, talented artist it motivates me. I also enjoy looking at their creations because I know it was hard work and it was unique. 
Like I previously said drawing takes time and having the right tools like different types of pencils for drawings is essential. For example, for value drawing its best if you have HB pencil and then add darkness with HB4 and/or adding layers in your drawing. 
This time I had in class I enjoyed even though I didn't use it correctly, I was more worried about other work due the next period or the next day. But when I got home I would spend on my creations for about 30 minutes to free my mind. Also this year I was able to get to know about Ms. Hull more and have conversations on whatever come up to my mind or hers. Even when we had art class in the lunch room and playing with her son for the class period. These times like those you can't take back. I'm really going to miss art class and Ms. Hull!!!  Also an appreciation to my mom for encouraging me through this whole year, it's crazy it's a year. Thank Youu

Art 2- Final Slideshow

This quarter in art, I learned many different, useful skills. 
This first assignment was figures. I did three different figures, drawing inspiration from dance. The first is a ballerina. The second lady is just sitting. The last on I lady is dancing modern. 
The second assignment was the lines assign,net, where we got to choose from different options. I chose blind contour as my first one because we had previously done it and I enjoyed it. I did a blind contour of a water bottle. Thes second was a gesture drawing and the final one was a planar analysis drawing of a woman. 
The third assignment this quarter in art was where we had to use a website and use colorful shapes to create an art piece. I started off by trying to make a robot face, and from their it transformed into its own art piece. I added bubble and many things as such. 
Next, is my space drawing. I wanted to do a city, drawing inspiration from where I lived, Philadelphia. I included the streets, sidewalks and tall building to match with my theme.
Up next is texture drawings. I drew three different cups, all incorporating the different textures and shadings i learned from the link in the assignment. 
My next piece of art is my value drawing assignment where we were given the option to draw still life, so I drew a still life of two objects.
Last is my elements of art piece, where I took all of the things I have arend this quarter and put them all into one peice of artwork. You can see textures, and shadings, colors and shapes, everything I learned this quarter.
Overall, this quarter in art, I have many great takeaways that I can use in the future. 

 

Quarter 4 Advanced Art Reflection

Quarter 4 Advanced Art Reflection


The first project we did this quarter was figure drawing. With a regular mechanical pencil on white 8.5 x 11 paper, I sketched 8 figures from a useful reference image site. I then chose one of the sketches to draw on large paper. I think that the final product is kind of atrocious proportionally, but I am proud of it because I never do full figure drawings. I think this project really showcases how much I need to do more of it. The second project we did this quarter was line drawings. I really liked this project. I did 6 bust portraits in different colored pens on white 8.5 x 11 paper, using continuous lines. The final product looked better with some drawings than others, but I think that the overall effect was very cool.

The third project we did this quarter was digital drawings. I made two of them using google draw. For each drawing, I used a combination of lines of my own creation and pre-made shapes. I personally like the more geometric one I made better. The fourth project we did this quarter was an illusion of space drawing. I used pencil on  white 8.5 x 11 paper. To make the illusion of space, I made a vanishing point and made all the lines go into it. I liked the cool surreal world I made with my drawing.

The fifth project we did this quarter was a texture drawing. Before my final drawing, I used a website to practice many different textures I could create with my pencil. Then, I used pencil on white 8.5 x 11 paper to make a drawing of vegetables, showcasing what I had learned about texture. The sixth project we did this quarter was value drawings. These were very fun because I had a lot of freedom with what I did. I did some fun doodles with a number of different mediums on white 8.5 x 11 paper. The seventh project of this quarter and the final project of the year was an elements of art drawing. I used color, value, line, space, and shape to make a really cool drawing. It was really fun to combine all the skills I learned to create something of my own.

​Artist's Statement

This final quarter, I spent all of my time sketching to create each work of art assigned to me per week. I got my sources from either my own head and or Mrs. Hull's links to examples of the assignments. I usually chose something random, but there was a little outside influence on what exactly I chose to draw. I used a pencil, paper, and sometimes colored pencils. I learned new ways of showing an element that I had drawn before. Most of my studio time was spent on one work at a time. When I was done, I'd upload it for about five to ten minutes. I am happy that I have improved a little in my art quality this year. I recognize that hard work has gotten me to this point, not just talent.
