Rosemarie Knibbe Capstone

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 9:04 pm

My name is Rosemarie Knibbe and my capstone mentor has been Ms. Hull. I chose her to be my mentor because she is my advisor and has heard me talk about my relationship with the youth group and understands my role there. I also had an out of school mentor, Kirsten Mertus. My relationship with Kirsten is not through her job but through my youth group. She is a youth leader there and has been a part of my life since I was in middle school. I selected her to be my outside mentor because she would be helping me pull together the retreat and she has an understanding of how the event would have to play out.

My capstone was to organize and lead a girls weekend retreat with my church's youth group. I also after the weekend I put together a guide on how to plan the retreat. I learned that there is a lot more planning that goes into these events than I thought. Other than that I learned the skills of how to pull together and event and how to make sure that all aspects work out.

Bibliography:

+ Graceful- Emily P Freeman

Freeman, Emily. Graceful. Letting go of your try-hard life. Grand Rapids: Revell, 2012. Print.

This source provides information about the message that the retreat is going to be centered around. I actually found this book which inspired me to make the message what this book is about. I wanted to find something that was relatable to the girls in their current lives and this book covers that. The source has been super helpful for me to figure out how to put my lesson together and how I can best approach the topic.

+ Redefining Beautiful- Jenna Lucado and Max Lucado

Lucado, Jenna, and Max Lucado. Redefining Beautiful. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2009. Print.

I chose this book because the topic really relates to things that girls during their teenage years struggle with. I wanted to make sure that they get the most out of this weekend and this book will help me to know what to say. This book covers a lot of different topics about what real beauty is and how to embrace who you are. These are core things that teenage girls need to know.

+ Bible

The Bible . Crossway Bibles, 2007. Print.

I used the Bible to find verses that apply to the theme. In my religion (christianity), the bible is the guide full of how to live your life to honor God. I chose this because I can’t have a retreat with lessons and not use the bible since it is the foundation of our beliefs.

+ Previous retreat packet

Ethridge, Shannon, and Stephen Arterburn. Girls Retreat May 6&7 2011 adapted from Every Young Woman's battle. 2011. Print.

This source is incredibly useful. This is the packet that they used for lessons in the previous years when they had a retreat. To me I was so excited that I was able to get my hands on this. I wanted to  be able to base what I did on previous things that worked. This packet will show me how things were done before so that I will have a better idea about how the lessons should work.

+ Previous retreat schedule

Heather, Cobb. Girl’s retreat Schedule. 2010. Print.

Along with the retreat packet this was also super helpful. I wasn’t able to remember everything that we did. I also couldn't remember how it was broken down time wise. I am going to use this, and replicate a similar schedule. Previously the time frames worked and so I now know how to make the weekend pan out and have it be a good time for everyone.

+ Teach the Ordinary Person’s Guide to teaching Students the Bible

Jackson, Allen. Teach the Ordinary Person's Guide to Teaching Students the Bible. Clarity Publishers, 2008. Print.

I am not a person who has had distinct bible classes since I was in middle school. My biblical knowledge is not as vast as people who are older and study it. This book is helpful in showing me how to teach and run a lesson without worrying about not being taught how.

+ Praying in Color

MacBeth, Sybil. Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God. Paraclete Press, 2007. Print.

A big struggle in the christian faith is the manor of praying and a lot of times it can be a stumbling block for people. There is the distractions that show up and make it hard to talk to God. This book as been super helpful to me in how to pray in a way that will enable you to stay focused on your conversation with God and to also remember to pray throughout the day. I chose to add this because I want to somehow show the girls this way of doing things.

+ 4 questions event planning

“4 questions to help Youth Ministry Event planning." Youthmin.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://youthmin.org/4-questions-to-help-youth-ministry-event-planning/>.

This site was helpful for me to get in the mindset that I needed to be in. It had me question what my motives were and what I wanted to achieve. It gave me a good idea of what kind of things the weekend should make happen. I do wish that the site had more things to think about but for now it works well.

+Crazy Love

Chan, Francis. Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. 1st ed. David C. Cook, 2008. Print.

This book is all about Gods love for us and how vast it is. That is one of the main themes of all the lessons and this book will help make clear how to say those things. It will also help me know those things and apply them to my life.

Kenny Le Capstone

Posted by Kenny Le in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:18 am

Kenny Le

In-school Mentor:
Mr. Miles

Topic Summary:
My goal was to learn and explore what I can learn throughout the year using Processing for coding.

Abstract:
For my year-round senior project, I decided to make my capstone be a computer-based project. I created a code from the help of Mr. Miles, Seamus Kirby, and other online sources that turns select images into ASCII text into .txt files. I also created a code that runs those .txt files into an animation. I am going into college with computer science as my intended major, so I decided that this would be a great senior project. The final product is a code that intends to run like a video I have watched online at youtube.

The two programs:

AsciiCapstoneFileRunner

AsciiCapstoneConvertor

Preview video

Annotated bibliography

"Love the Programmer (ASCII Art) Animation." YouTube. YouTube, 27 Jan. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wYz3zVnkIA>.

This is a youtube video for my main source of inspiration and ideas. Mr. Miles and I found many ideas on how to make a video of the same thing shown in the video. I can either record someone dancing or moving and turn it into ASCII art, or I can find a video of real dancers on youtube and write a code to make an ASCII animation. This is useful, because it shows me what I need to do before my deadlines and the ideas it gives me.

"Examples. Short, Prototypical Programs Exploring the Basics of Programming with Processing." Examples Processing.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://processing.org/examples/>.

This website shows examples from the program Processing. It is very useful because I found two codes that helped me with my capstone. It has examples of an ASCII art video capture, where it captures anything from the webcam and turns it into text. It also has an example where I can take the video that I am using and break it into frames. I did a trial test and my video was approximately 7500 frames/single images. This can be my backup to screenshot every frame, but that is not my plan because it would take too long. This will be one of the most useful sources I have.

"Adobe Community: FAQ: A Glossary of Video Terms." Premiere Pro Discussions. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://forums.adobe.com/message/2276578#2276578>.

I am testing around with Adobe premiere to extract my video frame by frame. This website is a FAQ glossary of what I need to know in Adobe premiere. There are tutorials on how to cut up a video, edit, or add anything I want to the video. This will prove useful when I am finalizing my edits and video for my code. I am trying to get another video editing software that might be easier for me to use than Adobe Premiere. This is useful if I were to continue using Adobe premiere to edit my future videos or cut out anything else.

"Chris.com - ASCII ART." Chris.com - ASCII ART. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.chris.com/ascii/>.

This website introduces me to the characters of ASCII art. There are some text and letters that I can’t use to create my ascii art. There are also some types of fonts that do not adjust together so they won’t fit. This source allows me to research what kind of fonts or texts I can use for my project. There are also designs and ASCII art examples that might come in handy if I wanted to add an image of an object to my code. This is pretty much everything I want to know about ASCII art.

"Reference. The Processing Language Was Designed to Facilitate the Creation of Sophisticated Visual Structures." Language Reference (API) Processing 2+. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://processing.org/reference/>.

This is a website I use in Senior Computer Science every class, because it references me to every code I need to use for my class assignments. It is also very useful, because I am using Processing to do my ASCII art program code. It gives me examples of what I can do and also tutorials on what I need to do. This will be my main source of information for my capstone.

"How to Extract Image Frames from a Video File." Digital Inspiration. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.labnol.org/software/extract-image-frames-from-video/18137/>.

This website gave me useful sources on how to extract an image frame by frame. It also gave me directions on how to extract an image frame from the video. It gave me links to sources/programs that I can use to get around 7000 images from a video if I needed too. This is a very useful how-to website that gives me step-by-step instructions or other sources to extract images.

"Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors." Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/excel/colors.htm>.

This website shows all of the color codes that I can use for my code. It is pretty much an overall color reference for almost all types of coding. I remember using this website for HTML colors. I can now use it for my code in processing for the color codes. This will be useful for color codings in my code to display colorful text instead of just black, white, or gray.

"Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors." Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/excel/colors.htm>.

This website is open processing, which is the program I use, but other users upload it to this website to share with other. This is an image to ascii art generator like thing. I can hopefully use this as a base code for my ascii art generator. So far, I did use it but it's not as detailed as I want mines to be. If I were to use this, I would make it more detailed than it currently is. This might prove to be useful later as a backup to my code or even a start-up for my future code.

N.p., n.d. Web. <https://scienceleadership.instructure.com/courses/558>.

This source is from canvas on SLA for my computer science engineering course. It documents what I learned from class from the beginning of the year because class lectures were uploaded to canvas. It gives me information on method, loops, etc. It is pretty much class lectures that provide me with detailed information with Processing, which I am using for my capstone.

N.p., n.d. Web. <https://scienceleadership.instructure.com/courses/558>.

This website is useful in helping me edit the video for my capstone. There are moments and scenes where I want to speed it up and make the dancers flow. This will be useful in a lot of the editing for the video that I am making. Making a scene speed up or slow will help me create a good video.

Topic/Focus: Computer Science in the terms of the language of Scratch

I am interested in going into field of Computer Science in my life.  Which specific aspects of it as of right now I’m not sure whether it might be more web engineering focused, more aimed towards game/application development, or maybe through my life experiences it may even shift more towards teaching it in a school setting.  During my freshmen and sophomore years I had already worked a decent amount with Scratch both learning and mentoring in the subject in order to learn more about it.  And I would like to continue doing that to learn more about programming for later in life.

Product: Teaching a mini-course over at SLAB to a few of the freshmen

The project that I had envisioned doing was one where I create an intro mini course that I then teach to the a few freshmen over at SLAB.  At the beginning of the course I would have them fill out a quick survey on the first day to see how they feel about their knowledge on the subject before anything happens and then they would fill out the survey again at the end of the course to see how they feel about their knowledge at the end and I would try to gage my job based on that.  During the course of the time there I would like to shape it much like the way that the people taught me scratch shaped it wherein we spent a few days learning scratch and then made some projects on it.

A link to my lesson plans can be found here.

A link to the gallery where their projects were posted can be found here.

In the interest of not making my post take up the whole page my bibliography can be found here.

Roberto Abazoski Capstone

Posted by Roberto Abazoski in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 1:23 am

For this project, I teamed up with two other SLA students, Ryan Doyle and Juan Rivera, my two mentors, Mr. VK and Ms. Dunda, an organization called Phresh Philly, and an engineering class at G.W. Carver HSES to design and build a self-sustaining greenhouse. This greenhouse would be able to prolong the life of plants that grow vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and onions as well as keep them watered adequately to mitigate the amount of times someone would have to go back and water. With the grown produce, SLA students would be able to sell it as a method of fundraising for sports or trips. The locally grown produce is organic, not genetically modified, it promotes healthier eating, cuts back on transportation costs, making it more affordable for anyone even stores to buy, and also provides valuable life skills for anyone interested in gardening.

Bibliography

Sarybel Meléndez - Capstone

Posted by Sarybel Melendez in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 7:22 pm

For this project, I decided to do something related to what I love doing the most... makeup. I have always loved anything that’s beauty-related, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share my knowledge about makeup with other girls from SLA.

I created a blog where I wrote several posts about the basics of beauty and makeup. I figured this would be a good idea since not a lot of people know how to apply makeup, or how to choose the right kind of makeup. On this blog, I share my knowledge about makeup and also share beauty tips that will help girls know more about these topics. I also did different girls’ makeup. I used ninth graders as models and did different looks on them.

This was an incredibly fun experience. I love writing about beauty and makeup, so it was really fun to write and share what I know with everyone else. I also enjoyed meeting new girls from the ninth-grade, doing their makeup, and connecting with them.
