Topic: Philanthropy: Youthadelphia
Mentor: Hull

Project Abstract: For my capstone I am going to work with the Philadelphia Foundation’s Youthadelphia program and help donate money to Youth-led and Youth empowered programs in Philadelphia. I will work with a faculty of other teams sitting down and discussing different issues affecting the teens in our communities and help fund programs that our helping to reduce those issue. At the end of the program we get to have a big ceremony and reward those programs with a big check and thank them for all they are doing for the people in our community.

I intend to gain more experience working with in a business setting with others collaborating on new ideas and topics revolve around my community. I intend to learn how to gain more experience with dealing with a great amount of responsibility in the workplace because when you’re working in a career you have to learn how to be a team and allow yourself to count on other people and share the responsibility.

"The World's Biggest Givers." The Richest . N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.therichest.com/celebnetworth/celebrity-lifestyle/giveaway/the-worlds-biggest-givers/>.

This website talks about different philanthropist who have given billions of dollars to different foundations and different causes all throughout the world. These causes range from scholarships for high school scholars, youth sports, cancer treatment, healing diseases, homeless shelters, single parents studies, vision impaired youth, entrepreneurs and etc. This website has helped me a lot with understanding why some philanthropist have decided to give their money and what types of causes a lot of people are for supporting.

"High impact Philanthropy." Boston Foundation. The Boston Foundation, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.bostonfoundation.org/Content.aspx?ID=14400>.

This website comes from the Boston Foundation and talks about specific necessities needed to make a philanthropic organization successful. One of the main things they talked about is that you do not need millions of dollars to have an high impact on people and or a cause. Instead of worrying about how much money you want to give you need to think about the time commitment, energy, and being actively involved in the cause. Giving money makes you a philanthropist but giving money while being an active participate in the process of bettering a cause makes you a great philanthropist.

Lotha, Gloria. "Philanthropic Foundation." Britiannica. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/455867/philanthropic-foundation>.

This website gives insight on what a philanthropic foundation is and all that consist in beginning one. This website also taught me about the history of philanthropy and how the amount of money has increased dramatically over the years. Hundreds of years ago philanthropic organization were usually small and donated a small amount of money to only local and palliative purposes. The first huge amount of money donated to a specific cause was by Andrew Carnegie which was worth $350 million and was used to establish The Carnegie Foundation. Years laters researches have found out that most funds were for activities in the fields of education, social welfare, science, health, religion, conservation, international relations, and public policy.

Walker, Paul. ROWW. Reach Out Worldwide, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <https://www.roww.org/about_us.php>.

Reach Out Worldwide is a non-profit organization founded by the late Paul Walker. He first created this website after helping respond to the massive earthquakes in Haiti on January 12, 2010. Paul Walker believed that there was a huge and disturbing gap between the availability skilled volunteers and resources in post disaster situations. So he partnered up with STIHL to devote helping victims of natural disasters and making sure that they get access to skillful workers and paramedics to help and support them through a very difficult time. He provides project management, logistics, heavy equipment operation, firefighting, EMT, paramedics, healthcare, and etc and takes the time to go out and physically help build homes and help heal the sick. This website has taught me that some philanthropist who create non-profit organization do not just sit back and give out money but become active participates in fighting for the cause.

"Becoming a Philanthropist 5: steps." Huffingtonpost. N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/becoming-a-philanthropist_n_1507361.html>.

This website talks about the quick and easy steps to become a successful philanthropist. They talk about how in order to truly be successful you must be passionate in the cause you are trying to fund and don’t worry about just trying to give a check. This website is more uplifting and empower them to become great contributors. They talked about getting your issue known to lots of people and get them to understand why this is so important.

"How to be an inspired to Philanthropist." About. N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. < http://nonprofit.about.com/od/fordonors/fr/inspiredphilant_2.htm>.

This website talks about what it takes to become an inspiring philanthropist. It gives you the tips of what you need to help improve your leadership skills, helping to find a certain role that you can fit into in the non-profit, knowing that this is a time commitment, that you should join a board and etc. This website was just like a few others I saw that were created to inspire, and educate how to become a successful philanthropist.

Abou Hinson Capstone

Posted by Abou Hinson in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:56 pm

My capstone was on leadership experience and character development. I knew I’d be working with Phresh Philly for the most part because it had been my ILP and I enjoyed it in the past. I initially planned to build a greenhouse in north Philadelphia but our plans since have changed. I’ve had increased participation in the group so I thought I’d document my role and talk about my experiences.

The 3 events that I documented were the financial literacy classes I co-hosted at SLA, the “Global Youth Service Day” event that I planned with my mentor, and a mentoring/education program I co-founded. I worked with a number of organizations to put these things together and I met some very amazing and inspiring people. I decided to do this as my capstone because I’ve always felt as if I were never preforming academically at my peak or as good as I should have been. After a summer of reflection I decided to go on a journey to reach my intellectual capacity, and these events have gave me even more to reflect on.

Topic Summary: The goal for this project was to create a collection of artwork and have it publicly displayed.

Project Abstract: I intend for my final product to be a collection of art work. Since my focus is on life and art, I wanted to have all pictures involving a person(s). My personal requirement was to try to make it as realistic as possible because that’s my style of drawing. I believe that art is best when you draw what you see. So, for my final product it is important to me to be able to draw how I see each person. I would like to carry out the visual with a public display in Science Leadership Academy.

I also got the idea to collaborate with other artists in SLA. So, I plan to be able to meet with them to conference with them about their pieces and to help with an struggles, concerns and to provide any materials. Therefore, collectively, there will be a majority of my artwork, but there will be featured artists’ work displayed as well. Although no one draws the same exact way, I would like the display as a whole to capture parts of life.

Final Product: Displayed on third floor ballroom wall

Goldie Robins Capstone

Posted by Goldie Robins in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:07 pm

My Final product is a Flow Chart made on Lucid Chart of the Capstone Process. The Flow Chart is broken down by quarters, starting with Quarter 1 and going through a timeline of what the Capstone process is and what the student need to get done and do in that quarter. It is the same for Quarter 2, 3, and 4. My process of this Capstone came from me not being able to be successful in my first/original Capstone idea. My original Capstone took up a lot of the year and after it not working out, I wasn’t as productive and proactive as I should have been to get another Capstone rolling. This caused me to feel stressed and in a state of helplessness. I know that I have not been the only person in SLA history to not have their Capstone work out like they wanted. I also know I will not be the last, so I figured it would be a great idea to really go through the process quarter by quarter to keep a student on track. I hope that they will use this product from the years to come to help them produce successful capstones from the beginning. I have learned a lot of the Capstone process as a whole which then led me to do this Capstone I am handing in and presenting. My goal is for it to help others!

Chopora, Malika. "How To: Organize a 5K Charity Run." NonProfitPeople. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://nonprofitpeople.monster.com/training/articles/673-how-to-organize-a-5k-charity-run?page=3>.

Reading this article gave me great advice and ideas to further this race/capstone process. A lot of the first page of the article included questions which gave me an inquiry aspect of this capstone process and helped me with the questions I did not think of before. With the questions that they said for each topic in organizing a race, specifically a 5k charity run kind of turned into a checklist for myself. Answering the questions myself or researching and then coming up with ideas to answer the certain questions and how to go forth with the answer. It helped me by going step by step for each underlying topic in this big 5k topic. It breaks it down, so it is not as overwhelming as it lokos. Taking one part of the project one step at a time.

Eisler, Melissa. "Build a Budget, Find Sponsors, Promote Your Race." Active.com. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://www.active.com/running/articles/build-a-budget-find-sponsors-promote-your-race>.

This website really showed/proved me what I can do with basically a no budget race. It gave me more promotion ideas and how I can go about doing that process. What I can do to execute getting sponsors which is really a big goal and my main point to this process. It showed me the different ways of communicating and networking in a successful way. Websites to use or look at at, who and what to say when I talk to them. The ideas of instead of trying to go big with sponsors and trying to reach past my limits, to go into local business’ whether they would like to give money or do something with a “gift bag: and to have them put a deal or something like that in there. It gave me different aspects that I could go from giving me a wide variety of choice.

Hinton, Kristin. "Learn All about Virtual Race Bags! (Webinar Replay)." Virtual Race Bags. N.p., 24 May 2013. Web. <http://www.virtualracebags.com/2013/05/learn-more-about-vrb-through-a-30-minute-webinar-replay/>.

This website is absolutely the coolest. The website as a whole taught me all about virtual goodie bags for a race. What they are, how they work, and why it is successful. Now, there are many websites for virtual race bags but this one really grabbed my attention. They are there for assistance setting up sponsors pages and they have already had big a small sponsors so I would hope that it would attract attention to sponsors because of how successful the website has been in the past. Also with the help and webinars the website has to guide and assist you through the whole process. This video is about 30 minutes including race director reports, sponsors reports, pricing, improving the dashboard and much more to draw attention. This is something that is really neat and offering this would help with race registration.

Martin, Pia, and Caitlin Thompson. "How Should I Do This?" Personal interview.

I have been in discussion with Ms. Martin and Ms. Thompson throughout this whole process. They have assisted me with when I wanted to do a physical race about changing dates and then going to change dates for my virtual race. Ms. Martin is one of the reasons I was convinved to change my event to a virtual race. She showed me examples and resources I can use. Also both Ms. Thompson and Ms.Martin had materials and other products that I would beable to have access to if I needed to .They have shown me timing apps, certain websites, how to go about doing something on way instead of another. They have research and asked other outsides sources questions and checked facts for me. Honestly, without them I do not think I would be where I am in my process right now. They are always looking out for things for me and have been more than helpful for not being my mentor.

"How to Organize a Race." Active.com. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://www.activeendurance.com/assets/activeendurance%20digital%20assets/event%20director%20guides/pdf/how-to-organize-a-5k.pdf>.

This is legitimately the ultimate guide. There are eight chapters and sub-topics that they touch about. Each one has its own numbered list in each topic. It really takes you step by step through the process. This one has especially helped me with getting my word out. What e-mails I should send and to who, what websites I should and can put them on, using their race registartion, flyers, and creating certain websites. It is all connected with sponsors, the race registartion, the final race day and more. Although it has the same information as other websites, they take a diffferent approach, have diffeerent step by step and details and really and it has really motivated me to get started and really go forth with the thinks and everything they have provided me.

"How to Organize Your First Race." Active.com. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://www.active.com/running/articles/how-to-organize-your-first-race>.

This is basically a “hub” of information in one website page. There are a lot of links to different articles and sites under topics. Pages helping choosing locations, date, even setting goals, permissions (if needed), and how I am going plan the logistics. Giving me websites to build a budget, finding sponsors, and promoting my race. Day of my race checklists, after event checklist with medals, shirts, and more if it pertains to me. It has been really helpful because it has led me to more than one broad topic under organizing a race. It’s different than the others with organizing the page different along with going at different perspective and different ideas and ways to approach the same thing.

"Running for Kicks and Giggles." Running for Kicks and Giggles. N.p., 27 Aug. 2013. Web. <http://runningforkicksandgiggles.wordpress.com/2013/08/27/confessions-of-a-virtual-race-director/>.

Reading this article was a total open up. It was coming from a perspective of someone who was like me. It wasn’t just a regular advertising website. So it gave me insight on someone who came from not organizing a race at all who had an interest and went for it. That is something  that I am doing so sharing their experience and what they had to do and what they found was interesting seeing their pros and cons and their experience. Nothing was sugar coated and it really touched her experience and process from not doing anything to the end of finishing the process, virtual run, and wanting to do it again.

"Running for Kicks and Giggles." Running for Kicks and Giggles. N.p., 25 Aug. 2013. Web. <http://runningforkicksandgiggles.wordpress.com/2013/08/25/virtually-running-101/>.

From the article above it is from the same person. The other one was talking about her process of seeing virtual runs, signing up for them, and then starting to be addicting and realizing that she wants to be a race director of one. With that whole process from start to finish, she took all her experience and what works and what didn’t and what will go well with a 101. Really her experience starting from nothing and moving it forward.

Sennebogen, Emelie. "Family Fun and Crafts." TLC. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/how-to-plan-5k-race-event.htm>.

This was interesting to see and read, cause it was from TLC. I think of TLC as a tv channel and not something that could really help me. It did help, but ti has a different perspective and different descriptions to do things. It is also something that I feel I can trust and something that I believe works because of

"THE WALKB4URUN VIRTUAL 5K" Black Girls RUN. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://www.blackgirlsrun.com/national-events/walkb4urun/>.

This website gave me a lay out, ideas, and everything included to put my race page together. It gave me a page to really look to for advice to write, what to say, and what ideas to tell them. It helped with a timing app they could use, telling them to record their stuff, about virtual race bibs and everything included up to race day. Instead of just giving me advice and what to do, an actual website and race that worked and was successful and something that is proven to work and get peoples attention.

Jalen Smith's Capstone

HERE IS A LINK TO THE FINAL PRODUCT

Cover Page
Student Name: Jalen Smith

In School Mentor Name: Ms. Martin

Out of School Mentor: Dr. Thomas George, Cosmetic Dentist

Topic Summary: The goal for this project was to allow individuals to learn about the importance of dental health. This information was displayed on a website so that people from all over the world could access such useful information. This information is supported with visual representations.

Project Abstract: During my sophomore and junior year in high school I have had the opportunity to shadow at one of the best cosmetic dental practices in the city of Philadelphia, Deme. Deme, ran and operated by Dr. Thomas George was willing to give me the experience that was unforgettable. It was his goal to provide me with enough background being as though I have had such a strong interest in dentistry, almost throughout my whole life. During my time with Dr. George we have reflected on the key issues that came up at his office. We felt that many people who came to his office brought up issues that could have been prevented. From this notion, we have felt the need to intervene and to do something bigger than just trying to fix the issues through procedures. We thought that it would be best to educate people about the importance of dentistry throughout the entire world. By using a website to display detailed information about dentistry it was our prediction that people would improve their oral health.

As a developer for this website there were many skills that I have mastered over time. I have learned to get over the fear of interacting with people and have learned to build confidence to ask questions. I have also learned how to be more proactive, especially when working with a professional who works on deadlines. In the future I plan to continue the work that I have started. Although I have many years before I become an orthodontist I would like to continue to educate myself and others about the importance of dentistry because dentistry is one of the central backbones to a healthy and prosperous life.

Capstone Annotative Bibliography

The Dental Insider Website

Background Information

"Dentists: Doctors of Oral Health." http://www.ada.org/. American Dental Association, 30 Jan 2014. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.ada.org/4504.asp&xgt;.

This source would be a beneficial source to use for this project because this source covers the basic roles of a dentist. It is very important that one knows and has a great relationship with their dentist, especially if they would need to improve there dental health. Dentists are the ones that make sure that there dental health is up to par. This website not only introduces the role of a dentist but they also talk about different forms of dentistry which appear to be very important for this project.

Dental, Delta. "Healthy smile, healthy you: The importance of oral health." http://www.deltadentalins.com/. Delta Dental, 12 May 2011. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.deltadentalins.com/oral_health/dentalhealth.html>.

I’ve decided to choose this website because this website also focuses upon the importance of oral health. This website talks about how bad oral concepts could lead into life threatening diseases, such as Diabetes, Leukemia, Oral Cancer, Pancreatic Caner, Heart Disease and Kidney Disease. This website lists ways people could avoid these problems from occurring in there lives. I believe that this information is appropriate for people to know and this would become a wake up call for a lot of people.

Orenstein, Beth. "A Guide to Good Personal Hygiene."http://www.everydayhealth.com/. Every Day Health, 20 May 2009. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.everydayhealth.com/healthy-living/guide-to-good-hygiene.asp&xgt;.

This website was very useful because it addresses poor dental hygiene hints at other issues and good habit that can help keep someone healthy. This website was mainly a tip guide, persuading people to do certain things in order to stay on track. They say that flossing is really important and  helps reduce bad breathe and helps reduce inflammation of the gums. Having a great diet can also become beneficial to oral health.

Kittredge, Clare. "Maintaining Good Dental Care Habits."http://www.everydayhealth.com/. Every Day Health, 20 May 2014. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.everydayhealth.com/dental-health/101/taking-care-of-your-teeth-at-home.asp&xgt;.

This website was very useful as well because it dug deeper into dental hygiene. This website talked about the consequences of poor oral hygiene. The one thing that really stood out to me was that fact that poor oral hygiene invites plaque to accumulate around the base of your teeth and gun line, causing your gums to become red and inflamed. These stages are the first stages for periodontal disease. A lot of people have to avoid these symptoms.

Healthy lives, Healthy Mouths. "Healthy Mouths Healthy Lives." http://www.healthymouthshealthylives.org/. Healthy Mouths Healthy Lives, n.d. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.healthymouthshealthylives.org/en/dental-care-resources/Questions to Ask Your Dentist/>.

This website has been really effective during my research phase. The reason why I really thought that it was useful was because this website talks about how people can ask important questions to there dentist about there oral health. Sometimes not everyone could ask the right questions about there oral health to there dentist. I believe that incorporating this information in the website would give others ideas as to what they should ask on there dental visits.

George, Thomas. Personal Interview. 12 Dec 2013.

Dr. George was an extremely useful source for this project because he opened up his practice for me to observe what he normally does on a regular basis. He is someone who I normally go to for dental questions. He is also someone who actually helps to enhance my project website. Also I have to opportunity to ask questions to his patients regarding there oral health.

Johnson, Sandy. "Tips For Fresh Breath."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 12 Dec 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/tips-fresh-breath>.

In today’s society many people struggle with bad breathe. This website touches upon the aspect of bad breathe and I believe the information that supply on this website would be good information to include on my website. I believe that it is good for people to know information about how people could reduce bad breathe.

Johnson, Sandy. "Caring for Braces."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 12 Sep 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/caring-braces>.

Many teens like myself have braces and sometimes it is hard to maintain them. This website is a great website that supplies information on how to maintain braces the right way. It’s good to allow people with braces to know how care for there braces. The most important things must know is how to still have great dental hygiene despite the fact that the braces may be in the way.

Johnson, Sandy. "Benefits of a Drinking Straw ."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 23 Jul 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/benefits-drinking-straw>.

I thought that this website blog was very interesting because this blog talks about how there is a benefit to drinking out of a straw and how it could help with dental hygiene. I believe that this information could possibly go on the website because this information could be tips. I also thought that this topic was very interesting in general because not too many people talk about straws and dentistry.

Johnson, Sandy. "Oral Care for Dogs."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 20 Jun 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/oral-care-dogs>.

I thought that this information was useful because this information not only focused upon human dental hygiene but it focused upon animal dental health. I wanted my website to focus on a variety of dental health and by incorporating both human and animal dental health I think that it would make my website very unique. A lot of people have animals and I think it would be useful to learn things about there animals dental health.

Videos (The titles speak for itself)

DMTV Episode 4 - Hygienist Visit Full Mouth Dental Cleaning. You Tube, 2013. Film.

This video is useful because it gives great tips for maintaing great oral health. This video talks about the importance of scheduling a dental cleaning and what you must do in the meantime to prepare for it. It also touches upon the procedures done during the visit.

Top 10 Dental Health Tips: Oral Hygiene. You Tube, 2013. Film.

How to brush your teeth? Learn in 4 simple steps!. You Tube, 2011. Film.

I’ve used this video because many people come to the dental office with issues all because there methods for brushing and flossing are poor. With this being said they have poor results. This video revisits the concept of brushing teeth. Although some people feel as though there brushing habits are great some times it is always good to revise the way they brush.

BIOLASE Technology on the Balancing Act. Dir. John Fan. You Tube, 2011. Film.

I used this video because millions of people are afraid to go to the dentist office due to the pain, grinding noises of the drill and needles. Now a days new technologies are trying to reduce the fear patients have in the dental office. With the development of Bio-Lase theres no need to have anxiety because this technology allows patients to experience a pain free visit.

Oral Cancer Screening. You Tube, 2014. Film.

It was important for me to have posted this video to my website because there are many people who are diagnosed with cancer. Oral cancer is one of them. This video discusses what it is, how it is treated and what can be done to prevent it.

Rosemarie Knibbe Capstone

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 9:04 pm

My name is Rosemarie Knibbe and my capstone mentor has been Ms. Hull. I chose her to be my mentor because she is my advisor and has heard me talk about my relationship with the youth group and understands my role there. I also had an out of school mentor, Kirsten Mertus. My relationship with Kirsten is not through her job but through my youth group. She is a youth leader there and has been a part of my life since I was in middle school. I selected her to be my outside mentor because she would be helping me pull together the retreat and she has an understanding of how the event would have to play out.

My capstone was to organize and lead a girls weekend retreat with my church's youth group. I also after the weekend I put together a guide on how to plan the retreat. I learned that there is a lot more planning that goes into these events than I thought. Other than that I learned the skills of how to pull together and event and how to make sure that all aspects work out.

Bibliography:

+ Graceful- Emily P Freeman

Freeman, Emily. Graceful. Letting go of your try-hard life. Grand Rapids: Revell, 2012. Print.

This source provides information about the message that the retreat is going to be centered around. I actually found this book which inspired me to make the message what this book is about. I wanted to find something that was relatable to the girls in their current lives and this book covers that. The source has been super helpful for me to figure out how to put my lesson together and how I can best approach the topic.

+ Redefining Beautiful- Jenna Lucado and Max Lucado

Lucado, Jenna, and Max Lucado. Redefining Beautiful. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2009. Print.

I chose this book because the topic really relates to things that girls during their teenage years struggle with. I wanted to make sure that they get the most out of this weekend and this book will help me to know what to say. This book covers a lot of different topics about what real beauty is and how to embrace who you are. These are core things that teenage girls need to know.

+ Bible

The Bible . Crossway Bibles, 2007. Print.

I used the Bible to find verses that apply to the theme. In my religion (christianity), the bible is the guide full of how to live your life to honor God. I chose this because I can’t have a retreat with lessons and not use the bible since it is the foundation of our beliefs.

+ Previous retreat packet

Ethridge, Shannon, and Stephen Arterburn. Girls Retreat May 6&7 2011 adapted from Every Young Woman's battle. 2011. Print.

This source is incredibly useful. This is the packet that they used for lessons in the previous years when they had a retreat. To me I was so excited that I was able to get my hands on this. I wanted to  be able to base what I did on previous things that worked. This packet will show me how things were done before so that I will have a better idea about how the lessons should work.

+ Previous retreat schedule

Heather, Cobb. Girl’s retreat Schedule. 2010. Print.

Along with the retreat packet this was also super helpful. I wasn’t able to remember everything that we did. I also couldn't remember how it was broken down time wise. I am going to use this, and replicate a similar schedule. Previously the time frames worked and so I now know how to make the weekend pan out and have it be a good time for everyone.

+ Teach the Ordinary Person’s Guide to teaching Students the Bible

Jackson, Allen. Teach the Ordinary Person's Guide to Teaching Students the Bible. Clarity Publishers, 2008. Print.

I am not a person who has had distinct bible classes since I was in middle school. My biblical knowledge is not as vast as people who are older and study it. This book is helpful in showing me how to teach and run a lesson without worrying about not being taught how.

+ Praying in Color

MacBeth, Sybil. Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God. Paraclete Press, 2007. Print.

A big struggle in the christian faith is the manor of praying and a lot of times it can be a stumbling block for people. There is the distractions that show up and make it hard to talk to God. This book as been super helpful to me in how to pray in a way that will enable you to stay focused on your conversation with God and to also remember to pray throughout the day. I chose to add this because I want to somehow show the girls this way of doing things.

+ 4 questions event planning

“4 questions to help Youth Ministry Event planning." Youthmin.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://youthmin.org/4-questions-to-help-youth-ministry-event-planning/>.

This site was helpful for me to get in the mindset that I needed to be in. It had me question what my motives were and what I wanted to achieve. It gave me a good idea of what kind of things the weekend should make happen. I do wish that the site had more things to think about but for now it works well.

+Crazy Love

Chan, Francis. Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. 1st ed. David C. Cook, 2008. Print.

This book is all about Gods love for us and how vast it is. That is one of the main themes of all the lessons and this book will help make clear how to say those things. It will also help me know those things and apply them to my life.

Isaac Adlowitz Capstone (Phillies)

Posted by Isaac Adlowitz in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 8:41 pm

Isaac Adlowitz
Mentors: Ms.Hull and Ms. Siswick

For my capstone I wanted to do something that would involve baseball in some way or another. Just about everyone who knows me knows how obsessed I am about baseball and the Phillies so this capstone was better than anything I could have ever asked for. I began pursuing this as capstone ever since my mom took me to a symposium at UPenn about "Ballparks as Urban Magnets" back in my sophomore year. At the symposium one of the owners of the Washington Nationals spoke, one of the owners of the Cleveland Indians spoke, an architect who has designed multiple Major League Stadiums spoke, and also Phillies President David Montgomery spoke. Afterwards I approached Montgomery and asked him for advice on how a high school kid could potentially get a job with a Major League ball club, he said told me about the Phillies having a senior project program, and gave me the contact information for someone who leads the program. Without meeting him I would have likely never found out about this program.

During my time at the Phillies I was given an insider's point of view on how daily life inside a professional sports team's front office operates. I learned about the many different facets which make teams a well oiled machine and I learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way. I met many different people and feel as though I have successfully gotten my foot in the door. I hope to present to my peers and other people what types of things are needed to move your way up in this business, wether or not I would want to still pursue this as a career, what types of things you actually do vs. what someone may think you do, and all in all my experience and how they have further molded me and provided me with a wider array of perspectives.

Here is a journal that I kept talking about each and everyday of my experience interning with the Philadelphia Phillies

Project: Learn and teach my community about Financial Literacy
(Teaching or leadership experience project)

Reason: By doing this project I hope to enlighten my community and environment to learn about their spending, investments, and also about business and economics. This project will enable me to present my learning of Financial Literacy to educate my peers to help them reach their financial success

Through PhreshPhilly and their partnership with Prof. Kieth W. Weigelt and his Building Bridges To Wealth program, a program at the Wharton School of Business of University of Pennsylvania. I have been given an opportunity to boost my community's knowledge of their financial status, and help improve upon their use of financial institutions in their daily lives.

Shannon Powers Capstone

Posted by Shannon Powers in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 12:23 pm

My capstone was a book something that I had been wanting to write down for a long time. It was funny because I wasn't going to do this at first. I was actually going to paint seashells. Then I realized I hated the idea and talked to my mentor Bethany Carter about changing it to my book. then I went though writing in it. There was no need really for sources, because I already knew what I was doing and how I was going to do it. I'd been drawing the characters in the book before I even decided to write it. Nothing helped me more than the comments my two biggest fans wrote.

Devil's Charms

Patterson, James . Maximum Ride:The Angel Experiment. 1st ed. New York,NY: Little,Brown and Company, 2005. 422. Print.

This book was used for the writing style. I love the way you can just get inside Max’s head. Thats what I tried to do with Salem, I wanted to give you a clear idea of what he was thinking.

Clare, Cassandra. The Mortal Instruments- City of Bones. 1st ed. New York,NY: Simon Pulse, 2007. 485. Print.

I used this writing style a lot as well. I wasn’t a huge fan of writing in the third person and I had tried it out,but Salem’s personality required I write in first person so one could see how he saw things. What I used from her was the style of using details only when needed.

Paolini, Christopher. Eldest. first. New York,NY: Random House Children's Books, 2005. 679. Print.

When I had decided that there was going to be a dragon in my book I knew I was going to need ideas. I needed something that had a good description of what a dragon could look like from tall to small.  So I picked up my Eragon collection and started taking notes.

Striefvater, Maggie. Lament- The Faerie Queen's Deception. 1st ed. Woodbury,Minnesota : Llewellyn Publications, 2008. 325. Print.

This book gave me the idea of having a great number of different types of myths. I needed diversity in my Underrealm creatures and it took time to work out all of the details. However, this book  was a big help.

Kato , Kazve. Blue Exorcist - Volume 2. 2nd ed. Shonen Jump Advanced- Manga Edition: Tokyo, Japan, 2011. 195. Print.

Yes I’m citing a manga. Anyway I used this one to give me a good idea of how some of the things Salem had as a demon would look.

Meyer, Stephenie. Twilight. New York,NY: Little,Brown and Company, 2005. 544. Print.

I used to reference how my vampires wouldn’t be. I wanted them to be bad as hell not pansies. So I thought it a good idea to make my pixies shine in the sunlight.

Carter, Bethany. Personal Interview. 29 Jan 2014.

I used her to bounce ideas off of and also there are a couple of teasers from her book mixed in with mine.

Powers, Shannon. Personal Interview. 31 Jan 2014.

It was my idea. All of the ideals and plotline in this book were ideas of mine. The characters are all amazing brain farts.

Cast, P.C. Marked- House of Night. 1st ed. St. Martin's Griffin, 2007. 306. Print.

This was where I thought about how sunlight would affect my Vampires. It’s also how I decided that elemental powers for the Nymphs was brilliant.

Finch, Jenny. The Vampire Book- The legend, The Lore, The Allure . 1st ed. New York,NY: DK Children , 2009. 96. Print.

This was an amazing help in finding the perfect balance of old lore and my own ideals.

Kenny Le Capstone

Kenny Le

In-school Mentor:
Mr. Miles

Topic Summary:
My goal was to learn and explore what I can learn throughout the year using Processing for coding.

Abstract:
For my year-round senior project, I decided to make my capstone be a computer-based project. I created a code from the help of Mr. Miles, Seamus Kirby, and other online sources that turns select images into ASCII text into .txt files. I also created a code that runs those .txt files into an animation. I am going into college with computer science as my intended major, so I decided that this would be a great senior project. The final product is a code that intends to run like a video I have watched online at youtube.

The two programs:

AsciiCapstoneFileRunner

AsciiCapstoneConvertor

Annotated bibliography

"Love the Programmer (ASCII Art) Animation." YouTube. YouTube, 27 Jan. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wYz3zVnkIA>.

This is a youtube video for my main source of inspiration and ideas. Mr. Miles and I found many ideas on how to make a video of the same thing shown in the video. I can either record someone dancing or moving and turn it into ASCII art, or I can find a video of real dancers on youtube and write a code to make an ASCII animation. This is useful, because it shows me what I need to do before my deadlines and the ideas it gives me.

"Examples. Short, Prototypical Programs Exploring the Basics of Programming with Processing." Examples Processing.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://processing.org/examples/>.

This website shows examples from the program Processing. It is very useful because I found two codes that helped me with my capstone. It has examples of an ASCII art video capture, where it captures anything from the webcam and turns it into text. It also has an example where I can take the video that I am using and break it into frames. I did a trial test and my video was approximately 7500 frames/single images. This can be my backup to screenshot every frame, but that is not my plan because it would take too long. This will be one of the most useful sources I have.

"Adobe Community: FAQ: A Glossary of Video Terms." Premiere Pro Discussions. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://forums.adobe.com/message/2276578#2276578>.

I am testing around with Adobe premiere to extract my video frame by frame. This website is a FAQ glossary of what I need to know in Adobe premiere. There are tutorials on how to cut up a video, edit, or add anything I want to the video. This will prove useful when I am finalizing my edits and video for my code. I am trying to get another video editing software that might be easier for me to use than Adobe Premiere. This is useful if I were to continue using Adobe premiere to edit my future videos or cut out anything else.

"Chris.com - ASCII ART." Chris.com - ASCII ART. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.chris.com/ascii/>.

This website introduces me to the characters of ASCII art. There are some text and letters that I can’t use to create my ascii art. There are also some types of fonts that do not adjust together so they won’t fit. This source allows me to research what kind of fonts or texts I can use for my project. There are also designs and ASCII art examples that might come in handy if I wanted to add an image of an object to my code. This is pretty much everything I want to know about ASCII art.

"Reference. The Processing Language Was Designed to Facilitate the Creation of Sophisticated Visual Structures." Language Reference (API) Processing 2+. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://processing.org/reference/>.

This is a website I use in Senior Computer Science every class, because it references me to every code I need to use for my class assignments. It is also very useful, because I am using Processing to do my ASCII art program code. It gives me examples of what I can do and also tutorials on what I need to do. This will be my main source of information for my capstone.

"How to Extract Image Frames from a Video File." Digital Inspiration. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.labnol.org/software/extract-image-frames-from-video/18137/>.

This website gave me useful sources on how to extract an image frame by frame. It also gave me directions on how to extract an image frame from the video. It gave me links to sources/programs that I can use to get around 7000 images from a video if I needed too. This is a very useful how-to website that gives me step-by-step instructions or other sources to extract images.

"Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors." Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/excel/colors.htm>.

This website shows all of the color codes that I can use for my code. It is pretty much an overall color reference for almost all types of coding. I remember using this website for HTML colors. I can now use it for my code in processing for the color codes. This will be useful for color codings in my code to display colorful text instead of just black, white, or gray.

"Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors." Color Palette and the 56 Excel ColorIndex Colors. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/excel/colors.htm>.

This website is open processing, which is the program I use, but other users upload it to this website to share with other. This is an image to ascii art generator like thing. I can hopefully use this as a base code for my ascii art generator. So far, I did use it but it's not as detailed as I want mines to be. If I were to use this, I would make it more detailed than it currently is. This might prove to be useful later as a backup to my code or even a start-up for my future code.

N.p., n.d. Web. <https://scienceleadership.instructure.com/courses/558>.

This source is from canvas on SLA for my computer science engineering course. It documents what I learned from class from the beginning of the year because class lectures were uploaded to canvas. It gives me information on method, loops, etc. It is pretty much class lectures that provide me with detailed information with Processing, which I am using for my capstone.

N.p., n.d. Web. <https://scienceleadership.instructure.com/courses/558>.

This website is useful in helping me edit the video for my capstone. There are moments and scenes where I want to speed it up and make the dancers flow. This will be useful in a lot of the editing for the video that I am making. Making a scene speed up or slow will help me create a good video.
