Mentor: Hull

Project Abstract: For my capstone I am going to work with the Philadelphia Foundation’s Youthadelphia program and help donate money to Youth-led and Youth empowered programs in Philadelphia. I will work with a faculty of other teams sitting down and discussing different issues affecting the teens in our communities and help fund programs that our helping to reduce those issue. At the end of the program we get to have a big ceremony and reward those programs with a big check and thank them for all they are doing for the people in our community.

I intend to gain more experience working with in a business setting with others collaborating on new ideas and topics revolve around my community. I intend to learn how to gain more experience with dealing with a great amount of responsibility in the workplace because when you’re working in a career you have to learn how to be a team and allow yourself to count on other people and share the responsibility.

"The World's Biggest Givers." The Richest . N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.therichest.com/celebnetworth/celebrity-lifestyle/giveaway/the-worlds-biggest-givers/>.

This website talks about different philanthropist who have given billions of dollars to different foundations and different causes all throughout the world. These causes range from scholarships for high school scholars, youth sports, cancer treatment, healing diseases, homeless shelters, single parents studies, vision impaired youth, entrepreneurs and etc. This website has helped me a lot with understanding why some philanthropist have decided to give their money and what types of causes a lot of people are for supporting.

"High impact Philanthropy." Boston Foundation. The Boston Foundation, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.bostonfoundation.org/Content.aspx?ID=14400>.

This website comes from the Boston Foundation and talks about specific necessities needed to make a philanthropic organization successful. One of the main things they talked about is that you do not need millions of dollars to have an high impact on people and or a cause. Instead of worrying about how much money you want to give you need to think about the time commitment, energy, and being actively involved in the cause. Giving money makes you a philanthropist but giving money while being an active participate in the process of bettering a cause makes you a great philanthropist.

Lotha, Gloria. "Philanthropic Foundation." Britiannica. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/455867/philanthropic-foundation>.

This website gives insight on what a philanthropic foundation is and all that consist in beginning one. This website also taught me about the history of philanthropy and how the amount of money has increased dramatically over the years. Hundreds of years ago philanthropic organization were usually small and donated a small amount of money to only local and palliative purposes. The first huge amount of money donated to a specific cause was by Andrew Carnegie which was worth $350 million and was used to establish The Carnegie Foundation. Years laters researches have found out that most funds were for activities in the fields of education, social welfare, science, health, religion, conservation, international relations, and public policy.

Walker, Paul. ROWW. Reach Out Worldwide, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <https://www.roww.org/about_us.php>.

Reach Out Worldwide is a non-profit organization founded by the late Paul Walker. He first created this website after helping respond to the massive earthquakes in Haiti on January 12, 2010. Paul Walker believed that there was a huge and disturbing gap between the availability skilled volunteers and resources in post disaster situations. So he partnered up with STIHL to devote helping victims of natural disasters and making sure that they get access to skillful workers and paramedics to help and support them through a very difficult time. He provides project management, logistics, heavy equipment operation, firefighting, EMT, paramedics, healthcare, and etc and takes the time to go out and physically help build homes and help heal the sick. This website has taught me that some philanthropist who create non-profit organization do not just sit back and give out money but become active participates in fighting for the cause.

"Becoming a Philanthropist 5: steps." Huffingtonpost. N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/becoming-a-philanthropist_n_1507361.html>.

This website talks about the quick and easy steps to become a successful philanthropist. They talk about how in order to truly be successful you must be passionate in the cause you are trying to fund and don’t worry about just trying to give a check. This website is more uplifting and empower them to become great contributors. They talked about getting your issue known to lots of people and get them to understand why this is so important.

"How to be an inspired to Philanthropist." About. N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. < http://nonprofit.about.com/od/fordonors/fr/inspiredphilant_2.htm>.

This website talks about what it takes to become an inspiring philanthropist. It gives you the tips of what you need to help improve your leadership skills, helping to find a certain role that you can fit into in the non-profit, knowing that this is a time commitment, that you should join a board and etc. This website was just like a few others I saw that were created to inspire, and educate how to become a successful philanthropist.

#Write2connect Keyaira Doughty

Writing dares you to connect to that inner self that you may be to scared to reach on a daily basis.
Writing gives you the power to connect to the voiceless, for their voices will now be heard through you.
Writing allows you connect your story with others, do you find any similarities?
Writing asks you to become emotional, confide in that piece of paper and pen.
Writing pushes you to finish that College application, that high school paper, or that resume for your future career.
Writing provides you the tool to chat with old friends, distant relatives, or that crush you can't go a minute without thinking about.
Writing tells you that your conscious is only a temporary holder for your intelligent thoughts "Share them!"
Writing is your present, past, and future. Connect!

Keyaira Doughty English Process

Posted by Keyaira Doughty in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 10:41 pm
Our group decided that we wanted to raise awareness about teen pregnancy in Philadelphia. We wanted to show how teen pregnancy is a big issue within the philadelphia communities. Teen pregnancy is a societal problem, personal problem, and family problem.

My group members are Helen, Shannon, Jeffery, Micael R, and myself. When coming up with ideas on how to get our problem known and acknowledged around the school we wanted to see different ways that would not only be seen/ heard but be beneficial. When I was creating the posters my first thought was to post posters around the school with facts about teen pregnancy. Though knowing statics would be great we thought that they would be too boring for people to read. So we came up with the idea of posting different picture on a poster and then stating a quick sentence that would leave the readers with a quick thought.

We split our group into different sections that people will be in charged for. Helen, Shannon and I were in charge of creating/designing the posters that would be that hung up around the school. Jeffery is in charge of creating a twitter account in which he will post different topics, and facts about teen pregnancy and Jeffery was in charge of finding a website that resulted back to teen pregnancy and creating a QR code for it.

When working with my group members about what would be in the poster seemed to be the most challenging aspect of our project. Finding away to be different, amusing, but serious was a little difficult for us to come up with. Although this part took us a day or too to work over, we finally came up with away that would be beneficial to our viewers. I enjoyed working with my group and I think we did a great job pulling everything together.

Christmas Cane :D Jermel (&) Keyaira

Posted by Keyaira Doughty in Physics - Echols on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 11:41 am

For our project we decided to create a beautiful sculpture out of a christmas cane. Jermel and I both love christmas, it is our favorite holiday of the year and because we heard that we would be using christmas lights to decorate and light up a sculpture what better way would there be than to decorate a christmas cane.

We used a 9 volt battery, 12 lights, and 2 Wires. We decided that it would be best to make a 3 branch series of 4 bulbs in each branch, and put our switch at the top of our candy cane that way when you held the top of the candy cane you also hold the switch down to activate the candy cane.

S.E.X

Posted by Keyaira Doughty in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 8:54 am
S.E.X how big is it in your life. With people around you, With you. Are you pressured to have sex? Have you ever been pressured to have sex? I know you heard those, “Wait til your married,” Did you? Are you going to?

Crossing boundaries is when someone does something out of the box, or at least something that most people would have chose a different option. With doing this topic that there are many ways that people can cross boundaries and it doesn’t have to be something as big as start a revolution but something small that still could at least changed one life, or stuck out to some people.

I learned a lot of things after doing this project about not only how to do this interview but about myself, and my friend. I finally got the idea of interviewing people and making sure that I asked questions that the reader would have to think about and if I didn’t get the answer I wanted to go around the subject and bring it back to the big topic. In this topic I learned that the actual editing could be hard to do because you don’t know what to take out and keep in because we are the person doing the project we believe that everything is necessary and its not. Some of my strengths were coming up with the questions, getting the interviewee to come out and speak from what she believes in. A weakness would be my editing and coming up with a good opening paragraph.

My English is Better than Yours?

Posted by Keyaira Doughty in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 12:55 pm

“G’day Mate,”

“Howdy, partner! Ya’ll from round these parts? ”

“Haha Ayo Key, pass me thee chips!”

“Ard. Yo I don’t understand why they be talking so weird and they accents oh my gosh!”

“Right they always talking bout us and the way we break things down, and how we speak but the way they speak is all wrong can’t nobody understand what the hell they be saying they need to correct that Shit!”

“Nah Sha, I mean I wouldn’t call it wrong but its just real different from us. I mean other countries just put such strong emphasis on their words or at least too much, I mean I don’t know but that doesn’t mean the way they pronounce it is wrong haha.”

That was the day I actually began to think about languages, accents and the way certain people speak all over the world. When coming across new and different people who pronounce words different from the way we’re accustomed to people always begin to pin point and judge. They may call it “weird” or “wrong”, but the real question is “is the way we speak right or wrong?”

“F’ that Key, yo look dey just speak like outta with too much sound and emphasis or they sound to uptight like something stuck up there nose.”

“Okay’ so if people who speak with different accents seem wrong or uptight what do we sound like.”

“Regular!”

“That makes no sense. What if we’re actually the ones speaking and pronouncing things incorrectly?”

“We’re not.”

“How do you know that, you didn’t create all words and its pronunciations did you.”

“Naw but…”

“Ard den haha. I mean I’m not gonna lie doe the way they speak, it doesn’t sound regular to me but bet we sound just as bad to their ears.”

“Weird, wrong, incorrect, uncommon!” We use those words not only based off of the way that other speak and the accents they’re accustomed to, but base what’s right from wrong in our minds off of the way it has been "taught" to us. Language is only what people make it to be know one can say a language is right or wrong basing the fact that no one is one hundred percent sure if the way their pronouncing their words is the “right way” to say them.

“Key lemme ask you this, do you think you speak normal?”

“Hell yeah! Haha you can ask anyone that and they’ll tell you they believe they speak normal. Do you think you speak normal?”

“Sho do! Haha lemme stop, I can speak normally, you know full sentences and etc but this is they way I chose to speak. That don’t make the way I speak wrong and people shouldn’t judge me off of it.”

“Okay so that doesn’t make the way they speak incorrect either. You speak the way you speak because not only is that the way that you’ve been taught but since it feels normal to you, you’re not going to change it. That’s probably the same way someone else that you’re judging feels.”

“Shut up Key! Haha you think you smart”

“Ayee’ I’m jus sayin.”

“English Accents” you hear them all over the world from North America to Australia, South America to England and etc. Is one better than the other? The area we live in, our surroundings, and the different types of cultures we are accustomed to defines the way we speak. Having accents are just ways to take the English language and expand it to different and unique ways of speaking. “In Black English isn’t a language, then tell me what is,” by James Baldwlin he say “language, incontestably, reveals the speaker”.  Language is a big part of acknowledging someone’s identity. Everyone has a accent whether its very noticeable or very hard to hear, its one of out of millions of ways to makes us different from one another. By telling someone that they speak is incorrect is like disgracing someone’s whole identity.

James Baldwlin’s also states in, If Black English isn’t a language, then tell me what is; “Now no one can eat his cake and have it too”.

This means that when it comes down to languages and accents you can’t judge someone else’s without judging your own. How can we call the way someone else speaks incorrect when we’re not one hundred percent sure if the way we pronounce things is correct. Is there such thing as a right or wrong accent, or is it just a state of mind. Should we go around judging people based off the way they speak, or should we be complimenting them on how it’s so different but yet so unique?  We should find the positive on what so many people call a negative, and just embrace the different and unique accents we have in our English language. No one man is better than the other, unless ones mind let it be so.

I Just Want To Be Free !

Posted by Keyaira Doughty in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:35 pm
Beautiful surroundings… beat white picket fences from my house trapping me inside my thoughts.

“I just want to be free!”

I look around my surroundings, waterfalls, sunsets, and green grass sprouting out the ground not afraid to show its identity, unlike me, I am hiding behind my own shadows.

Birds chirping, singing me that beautiful lullaby I was never told as a child

I am tired.

Not tired as in yearning for sleep but tired of my sorrows.

I guess blue, black, and red are my favorite colors because I wear them all the time.

It started when I was 7!

To young to know right from wrong but I guess I was old enough to know pain and misery, that’s all they’ve given me was pain and misery.

“I didn’t mean it, I’m sorry!” All my life these 6 powerful words have been spit upon.  Sorrow and hurt have been stomped on, just…like… my… face.

My parents never game a damn about me.

I was simply just a check that came through the mail.

I just want to be loved!

I stand tall like the trees, but broken down like these rocks

Fuck the rain I created these waterfalls from my tears at night.

I am an abused child.

Why am I an abused child?

No one ever told me they loved me before I laid my head down at night.

What, am I not good enough for you?

Am I only worth your anger and animosity? Bittersweet kisses planted on my cheek from your fist. I guess you love to mark your territory.

“Shit I’m doing it again!”

Constantly feeling like I’m doing something wrong but I’m the victim!

“I just want to be free”

When I run they always find me, when I hide the lights are always being shun upon me.

                                                So here I am

Standing upon this waterfall it’s my time to go.

No one can find me now. They would never look for someone so ugly in a place that’s so beautiful.

I’ve only lived 17 years and though so short it feels too long I jus want be free…. and suicide seems to be the only key to that door so here I go.

My foot loosing its grasp from the ground, eyes closed shut like the doors of freedom I am trying to open,

 I have fallen.

My last breath hits the water, my hourglass has finally ran out.

I choke, cough out my last breath, my last air bubble. It flows deeper and deeper into the water as it relays my last message to the world, “I Am Free!”

Why I Write ...

I write because it's beautiful.
One Pen, One Mind, One Voice = A Million Possibilities
Talk about a life You've never experienced but preach It like you live it everyday.
I write because it's beautiful.
Tell a story for someone whose afraid to tell their own even though everyones listening.
Express yourself in ways you never could
Tell people things you never would.
It's Beautiful and I Write because it's Beautiful!

New Beginnings After a tragic ending

New Beginnings after a tragic ending

“Tick Tock Tick Tock” my body froze, motionless I can hear the hands on the clock ticking so softly but roaring loudly in my ear. My head turned slowly towards the clock “2:00pm”.

“Key what the hell is wrong with you?”

“Oh uh nothing” that was weird.  I was walking with friend home from school since we got out early. It took us a while to get to her house but once we got there we were exhausted. After we got something to eat we sat on her porch and laughed for hours and hours, that’s when it all began. Instantly I realized I had 14 missed calls I quickly called my cousin.

“Hey wassup,” silence.

“Hello” I repeated caught of guard by the silence.

“Key, where you at? We been calling you, you need to get home now!”

“Wait, what’s wrong?”

“We’re coming to get you. Your brother died in a car accident.”

I didn’t know what to say my vision blurred, palms began to sweat. Crash, my phone fell from my grip and for once in my life I couldn’t speak.

“Dang Kev you always cheating in something!”

“Dang lil sis you always losing in something!” my brother laughed hysterically mocking my anger. I stared cold-heartedly at him I didn’t find a damn thing funny. I was 7 years old and he was 12 at the time. We just got done playing Street fighter 4 times and I lost each round. The thought of losing to my brother made me cringe and him rubbing it in only made it worst.

“Its not funny!”

“Your right it’s not funny key” I smiled

“Its Sad!”

“Housed!!” my cousin yelled cracking up on the floor. My smile faded quickly,

Thump, thump, thump, I stormed up the steps flushed with embarrassment.

“Aw key you know I love you and don’t worry sis ima teach you how to strategize that way when you older you can take on anybody well except me of course.”

“Chill cuz now you know aint no girl playing video games it’s a man thing that aint no girl ready for.”

I proceeded to my room as I glanced at my cousin one more time and smirked we’ll see bout that.

Everything around me grew black and cold. None of this was making any sense how could my brother die, I just saw him yesterday? I stared at the sky reminiscing about old times we had. I could feel a storm coming and before I knew it my vision began to blur as the liquid formed into my eyes and then it rain. Tears began to drop from my eyes flooding my cheeks with streams of sorrow. Each teardrop represented the time I’d have to spend without my brother until the tears stopped symbolizing that my pain and time would be gone and I’d see him again. Just then my cousin drove up the block and signaled me to get in the car I glanced at my friend who understood it was time for me to go. I hopped in the car and drove home with my cousin silently except for the small talk about how my whole family was inside my house. Staring out the foggy window spotting families sitting on porches and little kids playing I suddenly realized my life would never be the same. We parked the car down the street from my home and began walking up the block. I signaled him to go ahead of me because I was in no rush to go home. I walked slowly to my house as people stared at me to see my reaction. I began walking up my steps as I stood frozen on my porch breathing slowing reaching for the doorknob I slowly turned it open entering my home knowing that it was time to face my reality.

Through my brother’s death I realized that the world is REAL.  Life is short my brother died at 19 and for the times I have on earth have I’m going live it to the fullest and do things I’ve never done before, be spontaneous and adventurous but most importantly have fun!  Life never goes the way you may plan it to but you have to deal with the cards you’re dealt with. I learned to never hold grudges for a tomorrow that may never come and to tell the people that matter the most to me that I love them because it maybe the last chance I get. I realized that you only get one shot at life and every minute counts no matter who you are. That person who thinks they’re above everybody (your not), or that shy boy or girl who always feels misplaced and or unwanted (your not), jus let go of all insecurities and negatives and have fun besides like Drake said, “Everybody dies but not everybody lives”

Element Project 2011

Posted by Keyaira Doughty in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11:17 am
My element is Aluminum. Aluminum is a silvery white member of the boron group.
It is used for transportation, sheets, tube, castings packaging, construction (windows, building wire), cooking utensils street lighting poles and etc.  I decided to do a picture of an angel because once aluminum became popular they decided to make the first statue of a angel in aluminum. When doing this project i started to just research this project to get ideas of pictures that i wanted to draw. After that i drew the picture transported it to the block and carved it out. I thought this project was really different but in all i thought that this project was really difficult and had so many steps so i didn't care for it to much.
If i did this project i would try to buy a folder for this because it a lot to hold on to and i would try to cut out the board safer.

How to get Someones Number in Spanish

Posted by Keyaira Doughty on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 10:56 pm

In order to get someones number in Spanish you need to know:

*The Numbers in Spanish

*How to ask "What's you number?"

* How to break up and separate the Numbers.

To ask someone for there number in Spanish you say: Cual es tu numero de telefono? This mean "What is your phone Number?"

Numbers:

1

Uno

2

Dos

 3

Tres

4

Cuatro

5

Cinco

6

Seis

7

Siete

8

Ocho

9

Nueve

10

Diez

11

Once

12

Doce

13

Trece

14

Catorce

15

Quince

16

Diece-seis

17

18

Dieci-ocho

19

Dieci-Nueve

20

Veinte

21

Veintiuno

22

veintidos

23

veintitres

24

veinticuatro

25

veinticinco

26

veintiseis

27

vientisiete

28

vientiocho

29

vientinueve

30

treinta

31

Treinta y uno

32

Treinta y dos

33

Treinta y tres

34

Treinta y cuatro

35

Treinta y cinco

36

Treinta y seis

37

Treinta y siete

38

Treinta y ocho

39

Treinta y nueve

The second most important thing that you need to know is how to break up the numbers when getting someone's number.

Example: (215)-872-3452

In Spanish you would break the numbers up like this: (2 / 15)-8 / 72- 34 / 52

so you would say:  Dos(2) /Quince(15)- Ocho (8) / Setenta y dos(72)- Treinta y cuatro(34)- Cincuenta y dos(52)

Try a couple on your own:

215-333-6790

267-897-0234

Don't forget to break up the number.

Days Of The Week

Posted by Keyaira Doughty on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Learning the Days of the week is very simple in Espanol.

In order to learn them you must know:

*The Days  of the week

*Instead of Sunday being the first day of the week like in the English calender, Monday is the first day of the week.

*the days of the are always lowercase.

Days of the Week:

lunes: Monday

martes: Tuesday

miercoles: Wednesday

jueves: Thursday

viernes: Friday

sabado: saturday

domingo: Sunday

Hola! Greetings:

Posted by Keyaira Doughty on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 10:01 am

In order to greet someone and have a simple conversation in Spanish you have to know:

How to say Hello in Spanish

How to Ask someone their name

How to ask someone how they are doing.

You can say hello to someone by saying one of the following greetings according to the time of day:

¡Hola! = Hello (Anytime)

¡Buenos dias!= Good Morning

¡Buenas Tardes!= Good Afternoon

¡Buenas noches!= Goodnight

When asking someone their name in Espanol you say ¿Como Te llama?

There are two ways to ask someone their name. When speaking to an adult to say ¿Come se llama?

When speaking to an peer you say ¿Como te llama?

If someone was to ask you ¿Como te llama?, meaning "What's your name", you would say in respone

"Me llama es ___(your name)"

Finally if someone ask you your name and you want to know what's theirs in return you say (if adult) ¿Como se llama (Usted)? or just ¿Y Usted?. When asking a peer what's their name in response you say ¿Como te llamo (tu)?, or just ¿Y tu?.

¿Y? Makes the E sound

When asking someone how they are doing you say:

 ¿Como estas?(peer)

  ¿Como esta?(adult)

        ¿Que tal?

Ways to tell someone how you are doing:

(Muy) Bein, gracias = (Very) Good thankyou

Mas o menos. = Regular/fine/okay/average

 (Muy) Mal = (Very) Terrible

Just like the names, if someone ask you how you're doing and you want to know how they're doing in return you say:

¿Como estas(tu)? or just ¿Y tu? (peer).

When asking an adult you say ¿Como esta (usted)? or just ¿Y Usted?

Now here's a video of two people meeting for the first time greeting each other in Espanol
