Abou Hinson Capstone

Posted by Abou Hinson in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:56 pm

My capstone was on leadership experience and character development. I knew I’d be working with Phresh Philly for the most part because it had been my ILP and I enjoyed it in the past. I initially planned to build a greenhouse in north Philadelphia but our plans since have changed. I’ve had increased participation in the group so I thought I’d document my role and talk about my experiences.

The 3 events that I documented were the financial literacy classes I co-hosted at SLA, the “Global Youth Service Day” event that I planned with my mentor, and a mentoring/education program I co-founded. I worked with a number of organizations to put these things together and I met some very amazing and inspiring people. I decided to do this as my capstone because I’ve always felt as if I were never preforming academically at my peak or as good as I should have been. After a summer of reflection I decided to go on a journey to reach my intellectual capacity, and these events have gave me even more to reflect on.

What did you set out to do?

I initially set out to use mentor texts to develop a new definition of power and compare power to leadership with examples in today's society. Once reading the mentor texts I had learned so much and had more to write about simply what I learned from the books. I set up a small collection of ideas and theories I learned from each text and how it could be applied to a social enterprise.

How did this work incorporate storytelling?

This work incorporated storytelling in the sense that it highlighted character development. The process of how an individual can enlighten themselves through education and use this information to make change is a story. Though not in the traditional sense, as it is an unfinished story and will remain that way until the "main character" dies. It is a reflective story

What do you hope your audience gains from your work?

I really hope that my audience can see that there is education beyond traditional school and in this new age where everyone is getting degrees it is important that you have an intellectual edge on the competition. I also want them to see that even if they don't go into business, that they should still keep a business, or entrepreneurial, mindset going about career matters.

What did you gain?

I gained a lot of new information and reflection time on myself. I go further into the things I learned in the actual text.

Ahinson Snesbitt Business unit project

Posted by Abou Hinson in American History - Jonas on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 8:54 pm
For this project Abou and I decided to create a website. We did this because we thought that all of our research and analysis could be easily displayed, and people can go at their own pace to look through the site and read what they want. We focused on comparing the two time periods, and how the President/government acted upon the economic crisis at hand. We talked about their similarities and differences, and mainly if their plans were success or failures.

When i heard about this project I immediately thought to light up one of my hats. The reason i choose to do a Cowboys hat is because this is a Eagles city. I thought that my favorite team doesn't always get enough "shine" in Philadelphia. Originally i wanted to put the lights on top of the brim of the hat so the light shines on the brim but i came across a few problems. For one i didn't know how to make the holes. The material was too soft to drill, but if i just cut it the holes wouldn't be the correct shape. I decided to put the lights through the pre made holes at the top of the hat. I also wanted to have blue and white mixed lights but because of errors with my blue lights i ended up using my favorite color, red. My over all choice to choose this hat wasn't so much my love for headwear, but my interest in sports.

Humanities Portfolio 2012

Posted by Abou Hinson in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Throughout the year mr. Block has constantly introduced me into themes I would never have looked into. He has made me realize that the world’s problems aren’t so easy to solve and that everybody is a little responsible. For example I would always ask why do things like sweatshops still exist. Mr. Block brought it to our attention that there is a system built around these horrible acts and that the honest answer is because you cant give it up. So I looked towards the workers and came to my own conclusion that ”The only way was to stop the process is if the whole country committed to not working at these places. But the reality is that these horrible, long hours, and low paying jobs are all they have.”- Sweatshop trial.

I have also learned to look at people more equally and understand that freedom is a state of mind. In Finding Freedom by Jarvis Jay Masters it is easily arguable that he was more free incarcerated then ever before in his life. He found himself a new man and a buddhist while in prison. Upon meeting a lama of his religion he said to himself “Here’s a guy who can take me out of prison even as I remain here.” He also began to separate himself from his environment by meditation, as he attempted in “Seeking Silence” a chapter in the book. A negative example of this is the story “Wildwood”. Before she ran away, the girl lived with a mother who she couldn’t stand. In reality, she was free to do whatever she wanted but living with her mother she felt imprisoned and not free todo anything.

I also learned about leaders and responsibility needed to maintain such a role. I found out that a title means nothing if respect isn’t held in that title. When studying the “Lord of the Flies” unit I theorized that “Authority doesn’t always depend on who is labeled as a leader, but more who is respected the most.” based on the leadership problems in the text. That theory is constantly proved with protests around the world. Those protestors(the people) are being lead by those who they respect and agree with as opposed to who is labeled as their leaders(their government). I was able to reflect on how responsibilities in my childhood can change my character in the future. “Certain responsibilities as a young teen can further Impact your life once you understand the values incorporated.”.

This course has also taught me the importance on being able to view a situation through multiple vantage points, or “lenses”. We did a project on the book “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” where we took a scene out of the book and portrayed it through either another character’s point of view or a general lens(feminist, marxist, etc.). This skill that I acquired has not only helped me with other assignments in school, but also helps me to understand other people’s feelings and ideas. I found multiple units interesting, and a few of them topics that I would research myself. I feel as though I learned a lot this year and acquired a few skills that will continue to help me throughout life.

Language Autobiography - Ahinson

Posted by Abou Hinson in English 2 - Block on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 2:52 pm
Introduction-

The purpose of this project was to reveal the connection between language and identity. In our unit we talked about how language is used in various ways with different people such as family, friends, and strangers. We connected the concept to our personal lives. In my paper i discussed how language has effected how I see people. Things like accents and pronunciation of words. I also talked about other concepts like code-switching, changing how you talk while around different people. Code-switching is my most commonly used language concept.

Language Autobiography-

“Language is a central feature of human identity.”-Kari Gibson of University of Hawaii. Language has played a very important role in my life. I have moved a lot in my childhood at a young age. In my elementary school life I attended 4 schools in 5 years in 3 states. At an essential time for my character development. While moving I’ve heard various very unique accents and slang. Each and every single accent, slang word, and language has contributed to my life in a different way. While living in Savannah, Georgia I got more than a taste of every one’s thick accents.

I believe that language can change people’s thoughts of you. Like how when I hear a southern accent I tend to take offense to what ever they say to me. There was a time when I had adopted a few words from the south. I was in the 4th grade in a southern Georgia elementary English class. Ironically the teacher had the most proper pronunciations I have ever heard, even until this day. My English pronunciations were the best in the class, but never the less still only meeting the standards for good English in that town. Standards that were below hers.

It was a Monday morning and the teacher was becoming very frustrated with the class’ skills. We were downgraded to counting to ten. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, ate, nine, ten” the class repeated adding emphasis on every E, O and I. I was doing pretty good until it came to “four”. “One, two, three, foe”. I was slipping up & the teacher noticed immediately. “Mr. Moore!” she yelled. “One two three four, four!” she tried to correct me but it was too late. I lost control of part of my tongue to southern slang and there was no going back. When I returned to Philly I could always see a person’s disgust hang from their face when I passed that number.

It showed me that an out of place accent singles someone out. People very often complemented me on my good grammar & when they heard “foe” I could see in their face how they regret past complements. Being that I only had slight slang from the area, I often wondered how people from the south are viewed and judged when they go to other parts of the country with an accent. I believe people do the same thing with race. For example, if you lived in a world were one race discriminated against yours you would most likely grow to not like that race. But if that race was always nice then you would like them. If someone with a certain accent has left a good impression on you you expect people also with that accent to also be kind & nice.

That tells us about how language cant effect identity. I’ve had person experiences with that. When attending my elementary school filled with kids that used bad grammar and slang most of the time I was sometimes shunned for speaking properly and with correct grammar. But in interviews when people heard me talk some would say things like “I bet everyone in your school is such a scholar like you!” I would nod. But the reality was that the school made me shy especially when presenting, when I had to be proper. It was like the girl in “Tongue Tied” how she was always told to speak up from being quiet. I can relate to her quote “What did you say?’ or ‘Speak up’ so I would have to preform again, only weaker the second time.” on page 165. That was a common dilemma in my early school life.

One of the best abilities you can have in this world is to be able to adapt, alter, and control how you say your words. In class we talked about this same concept. “Code-switching” changing the ways you talk for different people. Most people do it between elders and their peers. I am able to do it with individual people. There is a significant difference in the way I talk on one friend as opposed to another. Also the same with adults I am becoming better at this. I could talk to my friends saying things like “Wassup bro, whats poppin’” and have the intellectual capacity to hold a interesting discussion with my teacher, or write an essay.

Pipeline Monologue By Franklin Mancebo & Abou Hinson

Posted by Abou Hinson on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 3:04 pm
The purpose of me writing this monologe to my video was to get a sense of the other side of the whole Keystone XL pipeline. Some people like the workers and the people who this might effect may have a different view then the people who are promoting it,so what i did was I made a news cast and interviewed a worker and also interviewed a citizen on the way they felt and what were their thoughts.Hope you feel the same way..Enjoy!

Abou Hinson

Dear Mr. President

My name is Carlita Rodriguez. I am a latino-American in Austin, Texas. There hasn’t been much work available, let alone for a latina in a border state. The Keystone Tar Sands would provide much needed work and a healthy income for my four year old daughter and I. It would also significantly improve the economy for other Americans. If the Tar Sands were built it would also help others like myself find work. The only problem is I have to think about my daughter’s future.

The pipeline would emit pollution just like any other pipeline. Since the Tar Sands are a pipeline that means that they will leak. If it were to be built, the pipeline would run over a fresh water source, now rare in America. Some believe that it would be “Game over” for the environment. Its not so much a concern for me, but for my daughter. I know that I might not live to see the negative results of this project, but I couldn’t rest knowing that I was a part of my child’s environmentally instability.

Honestly I really need the work, but the price I’d have to pay would be too much. I vote no for the Tar sands project. The environment is to much of a price to pay for a little more energy.

Sincerely, Carlita Rodriguez

Descriptive Essay: Lessons Learned

Posted by Abou Hinson in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 3:01 pm

What is he touching me for? I hate it when people touch me to wake me up. Maybe I should keep my eyes closed & he’ll leave. “Abou, get up. You guys have to clean the room.” He wasn’t going to leave. I arose from my bed and greeted the broom with a tight grip around the neck and jerked it around all the way back to the room. When i arrived back at my room it had became a crime scene investigation. Searching every little quarter inch of the room for dust. “Abou, throw this away” Oh no. its starting, the constant back & forth from throwing everything away. And also the “Professional” cleaners want to move my bed so it covers the door. Now I’ll have to go the long way through the bathroom.

I never understood why we didn’t either bring the trash can in the room, or just collected the trash until we were done. But oh well. This is probably why I don’t mind working out now because it was a constant stream of running back and forth through the bathroom to throw every little threat to the vacuum cleaner away. If we throw away everything instead of using the vacuum to suck it up then why do we have one. Because only the finest dirt makes it to our vacuum. “Abou, here.”. As it continues. My over-thinking of the situation is making things even more stressful. Then I glance up & see the painting. A hazy sun lightly glazed over the salty waters of a boating dock. Everyone is pulling there boat in. The most calm part of the day... the end.

It was a saturday night. I had plans for once. Not because I wasnt social but since I’ve been let down many of times so I’ve learned that my family isnt the richest. So after understanding this I’ve learned to only ask to go out every once in a while to insure that my dad had money to give me and he wouldn’t say “No Abou, your always going out.”. This time it was perfect. I knew my dad had money because he just got paid, and I had enough money to be ok on my own. I called my friend one more time to confirm. I got dressed in my brand new jeans and my favorite American Eagle v-neck. Only thing left to do was tell my parents.

I walked into their room to find that they were also getting dressed. “Uhh .. where are you guys going?” I asked.

“Oh we were going to a show, why? My dad answered.

“Well because I wanted to go-”

“Sorry, you got to stay and watch your brother.” I didn’t even ask the question yet. I nodded and did a sharp turn and left out the door. When I got back to my room I had a blank look and observed the child that needed so much attention. He did nothing. I saw no reason to stay behind to monitor a 14 year old young teen. All he did was Play video games and get on the computer. Maybe he could’ve downloaded a bomb, or unlocked the special burn down your house cheat on the game. Really its probably just one of my parents’ schemes to cage my social life.

My scenes describe various times that I was being taught values. In the first scene when I was woken up early to clean my room I was being taught multiple things. By waking me up early I was taught to not waste time and that when you finish tasks early you have the rest of the day to yourself. Traditionally, the early bird gets the worm. I might have misinterpreted  the point of cleaning a room that will never be clean. I always thought that there was no point in doing certain things if there will be no one to see it. Things like dressing your best and cleaning other things. I saw it as an indirect lesson. The point being that you don’t maintain yourself for other people, you keep things nice because you like it nice.

My second scene describes a time that I was taught about different responsibilities. During the actual time period I felt that this was an unfair task being that I felt that my brother was old enough to watch himself. I now understand that it was teaching me to be responsible. I was entrusted to handle certain problems as such. My brother’s allergies get triggered, the electric went out, or if there was a fire I was responsible for getting my brother and myself out safely. The main idea in my scenes is that certain responsibilities as a young teen can further impact your life once you understand the values incorporated.

Abou's Perspective Drawing

Posted by Abou Hinson in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 12:41 pm

The project was to recreate a selected wall of the art studio, I choose the wall left of the desk. We first started by drawing a box (rectangle) to represent the actual wall. From there we found the vanishing point, or the center of the box. That is where we would find where each next line goes. Everything is in perspective of the vanishing point. My process was very long because it was to see if a line was straight because the edges of the paper were not straight. One thing that was easy to learn was perspective in general. By that I mean that the concept of everything has to be alined from the vanishing point was easy to understand. The most difficult thing to do was distinguishing wether or not a line was straight.

Michael Hall

I really like your drawing, but I think that you made a mistake with the bottom of your wall, you must've thought that the whole paper was the wall. But besides that the drawing is great

Abou's new slide,

Posted by Abou Hinson in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:40 am

On the first slide i created, i failed to uphold the concept of drawing eyes to my slide. I created a very generic, and lifeless slide. I think my main problem was because i was so very use to the standard slides when I did them in middle school. All i did was get my pictures, and draw them to the frames, and fill-in the pre-done slide.

On the new slide I created I got more creative. I used three picture to describe myself, with the middle one slightly bigger than the rest. I changed the font for a more attractive feel. I used the repetitive concept for the logos on the bottom to bring out the quote. And my main features where how i faded the pictures, and slightly reflected them onto my name.
