Student Name: Jalen Smith

In School Mentor Name: Ms. Martin

Out of School Mentor: Dr. Thomas George, Cosmetic Dentist

Topic Summary: The goal for this project was to allow individuals to learn about the importance of dental health. This information was displayed on a website so that people from all over the world could access such useful information. This information is supported with visual representations.

Project Abstract: During my sophomore and junior year in high school I have had the opportunity to shadow at one of the best cosmetic dental practices in the city of Philadelphia, Deme. Deme, ran and operated by Dr. Thomas George was willing to give me the experience that was unforgettable. It was his goal to provide me with enough background being as though I have had such a strong interest in dentistry, almost throughout my whole life. During my time with Dr. George we have reflected on the key issues that came up at his office. We felt that many people who came to his office brought up issues that could have been prevented. From this notion, we have felt the need to intervene and to do something bigger than just trying to fix the issues through procedures. We thought that it would be best to educate people about the importance of dentistry throughout the entire world. By using a website to display detailed information about dentistry it was our prediction that people would improve their oral health.

As a developer for this website there were many skills that I have mastered over time. I have learned to get over the fear of interacting with people and have learned to build confidence to ask questions. I have also learned how to be more proactive, especially when working with a professional who works on deadlines. In the future I plan to continue the work that I have started. Although I have many years before I become an orthodontist I would like to continue to educate myself and others about the importance of dentistry because dentistry is one of the central backbones to a healthy and prosperous life.

Background Information

"Dentists: Doctors of Oral Health." http://www.ada.org/. American Dental Association, 30 Jan 2014. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.ada.org/4504.asp&xgt;.

This source would be a beneficial source to use for this project because this source covers the basic roles of a dentist. It is very important that one knows and has a great relationship with their dentist, especially if they would need to improve there dental health. Dentists are the ones that make sure that there dental health is up to par. This website not only introduces the role of a dentist but they also talk about different forms of dentistry which appear to be very important for this project.

Dental, Delta. "Healthy smile, healthy you: The importance of oral health." http://www.deltadentalins.com/. Delta Dental, 12 May 2011. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.deltadentalins.com/oral_health/dentalhealth.html>.

I’ve decided to choose this website because this website also focuses upon the importance of oral health. This website talks about how bad oral concepts could lead into life threatening diseases, such as Diabetes, Leukemia, Oral Cancer, Pancreatic Caner, Heart Disease and Kidney Disease. This website lists ways people could avoid these problems from occurring in there lives. I believe that this information is appropriate for people to know and this would become a wake up call for a lot of people.

Orenstein, Beth. "A Guide to Good Personal Hygiene."http://www.everydayhealth.com/. Every Day Health, 20 May 2009. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.everydayhealth.com/healthy-living/guide-to-good-hygiene.asp&xgt;.

This website was very useful because it addresses poor dental hygiene hints at other issues and good habit that can help keep someone healthy. This website was mainly a tip guide, persuading people to do certain things in order to stay on track. They say that flossing is really important and  helps reduce bad breathe and helps reduce inflammation of the gums. Having a great diet can also become beneficial to oral health.

Kittredge, Clare. "Maintaining Good Dental Care Habits."http://www.everydayhealth.com/. Every Day Health, 20 May 2014. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.everydayhealth.com/dental-health/101/taking-care-of-your-teeth-at-home.asp&xgt;.

This website was very useful as well because it dug deeper into dental hygiene. This website talked about the consequences of poor oral hygiene. The one thing that really stood out to me was that fact that poor oral hygiene invites plaque to accumulate around the base of your teeth and gun line, causing your gums to become red and inflamed. These stages are the first stages for periodontal disease. A lot of people have to avoid these symptoms.

Healthy lives, Healthy Mouths. "Healthy Mouths Healthy Lives." http://www.healthymouthshealthylives.org/. Healthy Mouths Healthy Lives, n.d. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.healthymouthshealthylives.org/en/dental-care-resources/Questions to Ask Your Dentist/>.

This website has been really effective during my research phase. The reason why I really thought that it was useful was because this website talks about how people can ask important questions to there dentist about there oral health. Sometimes not everyone could ask the right questions about there oral health to there dentist. I believe that incorporating this information in the website would give others ideas as to what they should ask on there dental visits.

George, Thomas. Personal Interview. 12 Dec 2013.

Dr. George was an extremely useful source for this project because he opened up his practice for me to observe what he normally does on a regular basis. He is someone who I normally go to for dental questions. He is also someone who actually helps to enhance my project website. Also I have to opportunity to ask questions to his patients regarding there oral health.

Johnson, Sandy. "Tips For Fresh Breath."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 12 Dec 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/tips-fresh-breath>.

In today’s society many people struggle with bad breathe. This website touches upon the aspect of bad breathe and I believe the information that supply on this website would be good information to include on my website. I believe that it is good for people to know information about how people could reduce bad breathe.

Johnson, Sandy. "Caring for Braces."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 12 Sep 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/caring-braces>.

Many teens like myself have braces and sometimes it is hard to maintain them. This website is a great website that supplies information on how to maintain braces the right way. It’s good to allow people with braces to know how care for there braces. The most important things must know is how to still have great dental hygiene despite the fact that the braces may be in the way.

Johnson, Sandy. "Benefits of a Drinking Straw ."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 23 Jul 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/benefits-drinking-straw>.

I thought that this website blog was very interesting because this blog talks about how there is a benefit to drinking out of a straw and how it could help with dental hygiene. I believe that this information could possibly go on the website because this information could be tips. I also thought that this topic was very interesting in general because not too many people talk about straws and dentistry.

Johnson, Sandy. "Oral Care for Dogs."http://www.brightnow.com/. Bright Now! Dental, 20 Jun 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.brightnow.com/our-blog/oral-care-dogs>.

I thought that this information was useful because this information not only focused upon human dental hygiene but it focused upon animal dental health. I wanted my website to focus on a variety of dental health and by incorporating both human and animal dental health I think that it would make my website very unique. A lot of people have animals and I think it would be useful to learn things about there animals dental health.

Q#4 Benchmark

  • What did you set out to do?
For this english benchmark my goal was to craft a reflective piece on my experience with facing challenges in my life and how that related to me becoming a diplomat in society. From my experiences I've also tied this with me going to college and how I expect my college experience to prepare me to become a better leader in the future.

  • How does your work incorporate the art of storytelling?
While writing my passage I've decided to describe all of my experiences in depth. Usually in story telling authors always describe their stories in depth and also include imagery, which I have decided to include.

  • What do you hope your audience gains from your work?
I would really like the audience to take my personal experiences with facing challenges and incorporate them into their own lives. I don't want them to take exactly the same scenarios however, I would like for them to generate there own ideas based on my scenarios that I have given them and use it for their own lives.

  • What did you gain from doing this work.
I've gained better confidence for explaining my struggles and my plans for improving my future. I feel better explaining my situation and I also feel confident that my story would help to improve other people's views on how they deal with their own problems.

I've chosen the first picture because it describes myself for having a loyal personality. For the second picture this describes my uniqueness because while you look at the picture there are two identical people who look like myself. I really like to express myself in various ways and this picture was the prime example. For the third picture I truly value my salvation and this picture best described that because in this picture I was being baptized.

Writing to me is very important and is the source of opportunity. Writing allows me to express my thoughts and ideas. Writing helps me to establish my true self and ambition. Without writing I believe that people would not be able to think creatively and also be able to discover their abilities. The most important thing about writing is the fact that writing allows people to connect with the many events that goes on throughout the country. The power of writing is able to transform all of the issues that are currently happening in the world today.

Analysis Of A Hamlet Quote

Laertes and Ophelia’s Confrontation

Important Information From Scene: Act 1 Scene 3 page 39-40

Quote:

Think it no more.

For nature, crescent, does not grow alone

In thews and (bulk) but, as this temple waxes,

The inward service of the mind and soul

Grows wide withal. Perhaps he loves you now,

And now no soil nor cautel doth demirch

The virtue of his will; but you must fear,

His greatness weighed, his will is not his own,

(For he himself is subject to his birth.)

He may not, as unvalued persons do,

Carve for himself, for on his choice depends

The safety and the health of this whole state.

And therefore must his choice be circumscribed

Unto the voice and yielding of that body

Whereof he is the head. Then, if he says he loves you,

It fits your wisdom so far to believe it

As he in his particular act and place

May give his saying deed, which is no further

Than the main voice of Denmark goes withal.

Then weigh what loss your honor may sustain

If with too credent ear you list his songs

Or lose your heart or your chaste treasure open

To his unmastered importunity.

Fear it, Ophelia; fear it, my dear sister,

And keep you in the rear of your affection,

Out of the shot and danger of desire.

Analysis:

William Shakespeare, the legendary dramatist, has been recognized for his ability to create such dramatic characters that can lie within every reader. There are many examples listed throughout Shakespeare's most well told stories, one entitled Hamlet. One remarkable example is the deep conversation between both Ophelia and Laertes. The two both discuss the relationship between Ophelia and Hamlet. In the beginning of this scene Laertes is preparing to go away for quite some time. While Laertes is preparing himself, his sister Ophelia enters and they both begin to review everything that has to be done while he is gone. While reviewing Laertes offers additional advice to Ophelia.

The advice that he provided was about Hamlet. Laertes mentions to Ophelia that she should just consider thinking that Hamlet thinks of her as a hot blooded youth and that their relationship won’t last. Laertes thinks that everything is sweet and also believes that Hamlets affections towards her will all fade away very soon. As the reader of this passage it actually seems as though even though Ophelia and Hamlet are both deeply in love and they would like to be together Laertes is trying to do everything in his power to try and stop their thriving relationship. When the reader analyzes the tensions between what Laertes is thinking about Hamlet and what Ophelia is thinking about Hamlet it turns out to be completely different.  It seems as though Laertes kind of shows some type of hatred towards Hamlet.

As Laertes starts talking to Ophelia he mentions some very important things which help reveal his actual concern for Ophelia. He say’s “For nature, crescent, does not grow alone In thews and (bulk) but, as the temple waxes, The inward service of the mind and soul Grows wide withal.” Through this quote Laertes is suggesting that Hamlet not only gets bigger in his body but his responsibilities have to grow also. This quote seemed to be very challenging but I had to really dig deep and take my time to try and understand exactly what he was talking about. In the next sentence Laertes says, “Perhaps he loves you now, And now no soil nor cautel doth demirch The virtue of his will; but you must fear, His greatness weighed, his will is not his own, (For he himself is subject to his birth.)” Laertes is trying to encourage the situation in someway by stating Hamlets love for Ophelia however he believes that she has to become cautious of his actions towards her. He then says that she must remember that he belongs to a family of high authority and his intentions don’t really matter that much at all.

After making that clear Laertes then mentions, “He may not, as unvalued persons do, Carve himself, for on his choice depends The safety and the health of this whole state. And Therefore must his choice be circumscribed Uno the voice and yielding of that body Whereof he is the head.” This quote stood out to me because Laertes is saying to Ophelia that Hamlet can’t really make personal choices for himself because the country depends on what he does as a person. The choices that he makes for himself have to agree with the whole nation of Denmark. This situation is thoroughly indicated in some cases. He goes on and says, “It fits your wisdom so far to believe it As he in his particular act and place May give his saying deed, which is no further Than the main voice of Denmark goes withal.” Laertes is basically saying that if Hamlet loves Ophelia, she should be wise enough to see that his words only mean as much as the state of Denmark allows them to mean. This quote was very interesting.

Then he says, “Then weigh what loss your honor may sustain If with loss your honor may sustain If with too credent ear you list his songs, Or lose your heart, or your chaste treasure open To his unmastered importunity.” Ophelia in this case should think about how shameful it would be for her to fall for his flirtatious conversations and should surrender her treasure to his importunity. One of the last important quotes that Laertes said to Ophelia was, “Fear it, Ophelia; fear it, my dear sister, And keep you in the rear of your affection, Out of the shot and danger of desire.” From this quote Laertes is warning Ophelia about Hamlet’s ways and that she should keep her love under control for him. Laertes says that she shouldn’t become apart of his own desire.

To conclude everything this work of Shakespeare goes to show that he is very creative with showing the audience how dramatic character can really lie within every reader.

Jalen and Isaac's Circuit Project

Artist Statement:

For our experiment our goal was to construct a working circuit made from a Nike sneaker. This experiment entailed many components. Before constructing this circuit we both knew that each of us liked sneakers, so thats why we chose to design a circuit made from a sneaker made by Nike. This Nike sneaker is beneficial for people, especially athletes who run at night because while runners are running the lights from the sneaker would illuminate the area around them. This helps people around them to see that that person is running at night. While making this circuit we decided to place four blue lights on one side of the sneaker and four orange lights on the other side of the sneaker and set them up in parallel series.
The reason we placed the lights in parallel series was because we wanted each light to get equal amounts of voltage from the battery. We didn’t want one side of the sneaker to be dimmer than the other. After putting everything together we had a working circuit. Although we went through so much trouble with this experiment we still managed to develop a working circuit. If sneaker companies go along with what we developed there is a possibility that this specific sneaker would sell greatly in stores all around the country.

Zeitoun Book Review

All Is Not Lost When You Have Determination

Could you ever imagine losing everything that was important to you? Ever visualized being so close to death? It is hard to believe it, but some people have experienced those things. On August 23, 2005, America encountered one of it’s most devastating and deadliest hurricanes. One of the worst hurricanes America has faced was called Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina has impacted many innocent lives in a way that many people will never forget. Dave Eggers, the author of an award winning book entitled, Zeitoun, is a well known American author who wrote a memoir  about the dangerous experiences one individual faced during Hurricane Katrina. In his efforts in crafting such a life changing story, Eggers wanted to inform the readers that with hard work and determination people could make a difference in the eyes of danger.

The story Zeitoun is about a man named Abdulrahman Zeitoun. Abdulrahman Zeitoun is a middle aged Syrian American who is the father of four children. Zeitoun is a successful owner of a painting and contracting business. Because he wants the best for his family he values hard work. Zeitoun is married to a woman named, Kathy. Zeitoun and Kathy both went through numerous problems, racism being the main issue. Many Americans demonstrated prejudice acts towards the Zeitoun family all because of 9/11 considering their similar appearance to former terrorist. Despite all of the downfalls, his family manages to overcome these boundaries and carry on with their lives. Since the incident of 2001, Zeitoun has demonstrated great strength and determination for his life and the lives of others.

Two days before the storm arrived, thousands of people were already aware that the storm was coming. Many people were preparing to migrate away from the storm. However tensions arose in the Zeitoun household. Kathy decided to take the four children with her to Baton Rouge in order to get her and her children away from the storm. Kathy had persuaded her husband, Zeitoun, to come with them in order to get away from the terrible hurricane, but Zeitoun denied her requests and remained in Louisiana to keep watch over their home and business. Because Zeitoun was born in Jableh, Syria and worked as a sailor for most of his life, he believed that he could survive the tragic storm. At that time Zeitoun didn’t realize how dangerous it was. The next day Hurricane Katrina hit, tossing roofs off of houses and flooding many areas of Louisiana. Louisiana declared a state of emergency and that it was mandatory to evacuate the state.

Zeitoun realized that he was stuck in the worst hurricane of all time. He could no longer save the house from the forces of the hurricane because the repairs had become too expensive. Later, Zeitoun left his house and went out on a canoe to observe the effects of  Hurricane Katrina and to help other people in need. After seeing the impact, he had realized that his whole neighborhood was flooded in ten feet of water. Kathy heard on the news that the Coast Guards were making efforts toward Louisiana, bringing supplies to help people in need. The whole time Kathy was worried for her husband's safety. Kathy called Zeitoun and begged him to leave Louisiana, but Zeitoun once again denied her. Zeitoun declared that he had a mission to fulfill and that he wouldn’t leave Louisiana until he accomplished that mission.

Overtime Zeitoun made sure to call his wife daily to let her know what was going on. Later on in the story, six armed soldiers showed up at Zeitoun’s house.  At first Zeitoun thought that the soldiers were there to help him, but they actually threatened him with a gun.  After a few days goes past Zeitoun turns out missing and does not ever get in contact with his wife, Kathy. Kathy then believes that Zeitoun is dead and that he would not be coming back. This was very hard for her because she has mixed thoughts about her husband's whereabouts.

Shortly after this alarming event she received a phone call saying that her husband was arrested along with three other men. This was due to FEMA issues. Zeitoun was accused of being a possible terrorist in the United States. The men were held at a facility. This meant Zeitoun could not call his wife to let her know what had happened to him. Later in the story, Kathy found out where he was and bailed him out. After everything was resolved the whole family traveled back to Louisiana to help rebuild their home and community.

After reading this inspiring memoir I encourage other young readers to read this book. The book Zeitoun really touched my heart because it showed me that there are people in this world who are in need, but we as citizens don’t stop and take the time to help them. Instead we care mostly about ourselves and not others. When I think of what Zeitoun has done, knowing that he isn’t a US citizen, it really touched my heart and made me want to make a difference in this country. Zeitoun placed his life on the line for others. Not because he wanted to but it was because he cared. Despite losing everything in the storm he still made a difference in other people lives.

IMMIGRATION VISUALIZATION PROJECT

Posted by Jalen Smith in American History - Jonas on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 11:45 am

The thing that really surprised me while I was finding information for this project was the fact that a lot of immigrants that came were protestants and the catholics were very upset about them coming to the United States. The Catholics thought that the immigrants were going to over power the Pope for some reason because the immigrants came in large numbers. To me the obvious thing was the fact that the immigrants were coming to the United States in large numbers. It was obvious that sense millions of immigrants were coming to the United States that the population would increase. The government didn't really think that when they established the rights for immigrants to migrate to the United States. Therefore they shouldn't complain. Knowing that they've established new laws due to the over population of the United States, for the future I believe that the government will do what ever they can to put an end to immigration. I decided to present this information by including a lot of factual information on immigration and also providing a lot of visual pictures to better illustrate whats going on in those time periods sense this is a time line. The most challenging things that happened while working in a group was making sure that everyone stayed on topic and that everyone was on task. We had to also make sure that everyone submitted something at a certain time. It was challenging to sometimes do the work because some of the group members already had something to do for other classes. Time management was very difficult. If I were to do this project next time I would include more useful information and I would have better graphic so that people would understand my timeline much better.

"The Powerful Effects Of Overcoming A Dysfunctional Childhood"

Posted by Jalen Smith in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 6:42 am
While doing this interview I've learned many things. First of all I've learned to trust myself and listen to what wisdom always tells me. I've learned that it is important that every person has faith and know that they can do all things if you only believe. I also learned how to improve my way's of treating people, especially treating family members and peers. After listening to the final product of this podcast, the whole conversation really touched my heart because a lot of the stories that my grandmother was talking about, we both kind of shared the same problems in our lives. At one point in my life I thought that I was less important and not as intelligent as others. But towards the end, I've learned that I was a very intelligent student and that I had a lot invested in me, as far as my faith was concerned. It was such a joy to do this project and talk about the boundaries that my grandmother had faced and how she overcame those boundaries by listening to what wisdom told her. I challenge everyone to hear this inspirational podcast because you will truly be changed. Enjoy.

A Sanctified Women’s Bible Study (BM #2)

Quarter BM- Language Essay

How Does Language Intersect With Identity?

                               A Sanctified Women’s Bible Study

“Jalen, Jalen it is time to wake up shug. Time to have us some bible study. Meet us down stairs ok shug.”

“Alright Aunt Shirley, coming soon.” I replied politely.

I told Aunt Shirley I would be coming soon but all I can think is; Oh lord, this women is crazy. Calling herself trying to have bible study at 7:30 in the morning, or at least she is crazy enough to tag me along in the religious participation on my vacation. I found her demands to be a little too oblivious to my expectations of what I had planned for this vacation. This is supposed to be my vacation, and I didn’t want to wake up early on a day like this. Just because she is a pastor and all, doesn’t mean she has to be spreading the word of god. She did this so often that it had gotten to the point where she exaggerated every little thing drawing all the attention to her. No one ever paid any attention to me anymore. All eyes and ears were on her.

Some times I feel really frustrated with my aunt Shirley. I love her but I don’t like how she uses up more of her energy pastoring instead paying attention to me. I mean, In my opinion an aunt is supposed to love and welcome their nephew more than she is suppose to lecture and preach about her job and religion. I tried understanding why my aunt was treating me like this but just couldn’t figure it out. I was too annoyed with the way I felt that I just couldn’t bring my self to put myself in her shoes. I understood that my aunt truly believed in what she preached and that she wanted others to as well. But sometimes I come to the conclusion that she loves Jesus more than she loves me.

Nobody is going to want to be around her. She always talks about Jesus. Jesus this and Jesus that, even around others. Not just me. There is a place for everything, and pastoring should be done in the church and not anywhere else.

After I had completed all my thoughts about my problems with aunt Shirley I realized that she was still here.

“Come on Jalen, mama said to come down stairs now.” Aunt Shirley said.

“Alright!” I said, with force.

“Jalen we got some Bojangles, come on here. You betta come down stairs and get you some chicken and then after that we can have some bible study” said Aunt Shirley

I hurried and got ready. I ran down the steps to the kitchen, and I saw a whole bunch of people around the table. I started thinking quietly to myself again “she done called the whole family to the table.” I gagged. All my 50 million cousins were gathered around the table. Ten thousand biblical posters, hundreds of bibles and millions of sermon papers were all over the place. I knew that we were going to be in for a terrible vacation bible school lesson.

After staring at all the biblical work my aunt said,

“Alright how did you sleep last night shug?”

I wanted to say: “I slept good until you woke me up” but instead I answered “yes mam, I slept great last night”, with a satisfied tone of voice.

“Good, now get you sumna eat so we can have us some bible study.” She said.

“Yes mam.” I replied looking at the floor.

I felt doomed and I thought I was in church on a regular Sunday morning, instead of my aunt’s house, but at least she managed to ask me how my night was instead of going on about how great Jesus is.

Like I said before I love my aunt, even though my Aunt is very self-seeking when it comes to Christianity. And when it comes to support and love she is anything but self-seeking. After gorging my face with chicken, bowl berry biscuits and rice I felt this unfamiliar feeling of awkwardness, knowing that it was morning and we were sitting up here eaten some dinner food when it was the morning time. I shoved that thought away I sat down at the dinning room table and she began.

“ The Laud Shall Suplay All Uv My Needs According To His Riches In Gloray. Alrayt Jalen I woon’t you to read the 10 coommandments.“ She ordered like a preacher in a church.

“Yes mam. You must put god first, Respect your parents, Do not be envious of others.” I said bored.

“Oh noooo shug you caint say that, it saays “Do not be envayous of others.” You gotta make sure to say exactly everything that the laud says. We gotta do this one more again honey bunches of oats.” She said stern.

Already I felt as though Aunt Shirley was going to chop me up and spit me out just because I pronounced the words differently than she does. I said everything that the paper was saying and felt like I had a guard on, the whole time as to please her. As I read the paper she knew that she is from North Carolina  and that I’m from Philadelphia, but yet she still continued to stagger me about forming my words with a southern accent so as to sound like a southern boy who was living in California like she was.  She assumes that, just because I say things differently from the ways she says them that I am mixing up the words of the lord. Her assumptions and expectations are becoming unbearable; she assumes I am wrong she expects me to be a “Christian-holic” like her.  I sighed unable to do anything about my disagreement and carried along with my biblical side, reading what she wanted me to.

“You must out god first Respect you parents, Do not be envayous of others, Remember God’s Sabbath.”

“You caint say that baby cakes. The laud didn’t say that shug. He saay’s Remamber God’s Saybbath shug. You gotta get this rioght hun.”  She said.

That was when I had just expressed the truth as to how I was feeling about being ordered to pronounce the way I’m not used to. Of course I did it in the most quaint and polite way possible, not to offend her or God but just enough to get my point across.

“ Aunt Shirley, I am saying everything right but you are always correcting me just because I have different dialect than you. I am reading exactly what the paper is saying. When you keep correcting me over small grammatical errors I makes me feel non intelligent. I feel like I am in a spanish class room and every-time I speak spanish I get the accents wrong but this is plain english. I am speaking correct english and the bible was written in plain english. Jesus also known as the “lord” spoke clearly with no accents even though he did speak a different language. We all have different ways in which we speak and I don’t think that it is right for you to keep correcting me over accents.” I finally and conclusively stated my frustration.

“ Well I am so sorry darling. I didn’t mean to be so hard on you and make you think that you are non intelligent. It’s just that I have been speakin’ with a southern accent fo’ many years and sometimes when I hear someones dialact from the east coast it sounds confusing to me shug. I so sorry hun and I don’t won’t you to think that I am a bad aunty. She replied to me apologetically.

“No Aunt Shirley I love you and I forgive you for correcting me. I know that sometimes it is difficult to hear a different dialect from someone and sometimes you want to correct it because it is not familiar to you but just know that everyone are different and you can’t always correct everyone because you may hurt someones feelings.”

“Okay my honey bunches of oats. I will take that in consideration, now I know what to do when something like that happens again. Would you like me to make you some pig feet shug?”

“Yes mam, I would greatly appreciate that.” I said with a smile to her thoughtful offer to make up for her mistake.

My situation with my aunt at that moment reminded me of a story called “The Woman Warrior” By, Maxine Hong Kingston. This was a story about a girl who similarly like me. She was urged to speak “properly” as to what her mother’s requirements were. She did not meet her mother’s requirements and so her mother out of “love” literally cut a portion of her daughters tongue off. In my case it was my aunt that was trying to correct my dialect to the way she talked which was a southern accent, but at least I did not literally get my tong cut off. I only got pronging criticism.

“I cut it so that it could not be tongue-tied. Your tong would be able to move in any language”.

Said the mother of her tongue-tied daughter.

I feel like I can closely relate to the character from the story. Even though my situation was not nearly as drastic as hers. since an elder that she really loved- her mother was nagging her about changing a part of who she was just like my aunt was doing to me.

Alpina B7, The Ultimate Driving Machine

Alpina B7, The Ultimate Driving Machine

I remember the day I bought my dream car. “Ok Mr Garnett, enjoy your new BMW B7, “the sales man said.” Thank you for coming, have a great day.” I couldn’t believe I spent $122,900 on this car. I was so proud of myself. I deserved this, I thought. I am a successful Senior Chief of a criminal law firm. I thought that nothing could have gone wrong with the car. I couldn’t wait to show my wife and kids the cream leather seats, the shinny blue exterior, the navigation system, and the self parking system. Oh, I thought I was so fancy. Hearing the roar of the V12 engine coming down my street. I knew that Gabrielle was totally going to enjoy this car.  My wife and two children came outside to greet me in the driveway.

My son said “Oh my gosh this car is so cool!” He had asked me how much horsepower did the car have. I told him that the car had 500 horsepower. I knew that I shouldn’t have told him that, I knew that he was a little to curious. I told him that after I came back from my business trip, that we could take it for a spin. He was so upset because he would have had to wait 3 days to take the car out for a drive around the neighborhood. That evening I felt regret because I knew that buying an expensive car would lead to something bad. Knowing that my 18 year old son had an interest in cars and had constantly watched Top Gear every night, he would have loved to try to get into my car and take it for a drive himself. But then I trusted my son. I didn’t think that he would have done that while I was gone. He was already going to be with friends for the weekend so he wouldn’t have access to the car. Friday finally came and it was time for me to take a 10:43 am plane to California for my business trip. So I decided to park the car in the garage and leave the key with my wife just in case she had to borrow the car for the day. I would never forget that before I left I said I loved him, and that if he needed anything call me. We both agreed and I left.

“We are going to reach our destination soon, thank you for flying American Airlines” the Pilot said. While I was on the airplane, I felt pains in my stomach, cramping. I felt that something bad would happen to my family as a result of my new car. This was something that I have never felt before. After arriving at the LAX airport I called my wife and asked her if the car was still in the garage. She said of course, where else would it be. I then asked her where Devin was and she said that he was out with his friends. I felt relieved. So I carried on with my day. After the two days past and the business meetings were all attended to, I enjoyed visiting the numerous museums, theaters and restaurants, that California had to offer. I thought to myself that this was a very fulfilling trip. Everything was going according to plan, until the night when the hotel phone rang. There came a demanding voice on the telephone, it was a man calling me and asking me if I was Steven Garnett? I answered, yes. My stomach dropped completely to my ankles. He said: “My name is Detective Brown, do you own a 2012 BMW Alpina B7.” Yes, I answered. I wondered if everyone was alright and if my son was alright. He answered: “Your car has been totaled and 3 people have been killed in your vehicle, the driver was Devin Garnett. He has been drinking and driving and they were all killed. The car had instantly flipped over, pile driving the car into a ditch. My phone dropped to the floor leaving the police officer repetitively saying, “Are you there”?

He didn’t listen. Why did he do this? My son, my seed? Tears filled my eyes. I called my wife and shouted, how did he get the keys to the car! I told my wife that Devin was dead. Screams and cries burst from the telephone. I kept asking myself why oh why did I even buy this car. Why did I leave this car with my wife and children. How come I didn’t leave the car at the airport? Why oh why? Why my son? It’s all my fault. I need to take the next plane to Atlanta. Filled with such sorrow I boarded the 9760 Airplane to Atlanta’s Harts field-Jackson Airport. When everyone settled and the plane was ready for departure we blasted off into the gloomy sky. Hours past and there were no signs of happiness once so ever. “We are about to reach our final destination, thank you for riding American Airlines.” Drifting in the air looking at the clouds I imagined how much my son meant to me. His smiles, his intelligence and his bright sense of humor left me breathless from what I could have imagined. A big chunk of my heart was taken away from me just because of two things. That car and that urge of curiosity. This was something that I could have never put up with.

I finally survived the 5 hour plane ride and 2 weeks went past after my sons death. Today is his burial. Seeing the features of fall I began to reminisce about how he was such a scholar. He was determined and all he wanted to do was make his parents proud. I realized that my son was special, he was my best friend. I wished to have him back, safe in my arms, free from danger seen and unseen. This was a lesson. Now that he is in a better place I can’t let this haunt me for the rest of my life. This tragedy was just like water spilled on the ground and could not be gathered up again. As I looked into the gloomy sky I known that god was keeping him safe from harm. He would never have to go through no more struggle, no more pain but he will always be my pride and joy. My jewel.

Why Do I Write

Posted by Jalen Smith in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 2:26 pm
I love to wright because it helps me relax and relieve stress.  Writing soothes my mind and it takes me away from all the things that I deal with from time to time. Writing helps me organize my thoughts. Writing also helps me use bigger words and it strengthens my vocabulary and spelling. I believe that writing is important because writing helps you get into different jobs different schools and etc. Many people don't really care about writing but I do because writing could take you very far in life. To places that you never dreamed of being. Some people don't realize how good they are in writing until they try and craft together a story, an essay or any kind of writing prompt. So you should ask yourself why do you write!!!

The Physical Attack From The TV And Dresser

The Physical Attack From The TV And Dresser

I came home from of school. At that time I was in the third grade and I was tired of doing math problems, vocabulary words and other things so I felt the weekend fever. Sit back, relax and watch a movie was going through my brain. I decided to watch ANT’s, my favorite childhood movie. So I threw my book bag in the floor and sped up stairs to my room. I headed to my book case to go find my ANT’s movie. I groped desperately for the movie on the top shelf. Finally I found it. I quickly opened the case to the video and took the movie out of the box. My next step was to turn the TV on which was located at the top of my dresser. My TV was too high for me to reach but I attempted to try and turn the TV on.  I pulled the drawers open to try and make steps so that I could climb the dresser. I placed both of my feet on the first drawer and all hell broke loose.

With all my weight being on the drawer, the dresser couldn’t hold me, so it tipped over. Everything came down on top of me. I woke up on the floor. My chest and my arms were aching. I couldn’t get up because my body was pinned to the ground by the massive TV and dresser. I  raised my left and right arm just to see if they weren’t broken. I noticed that on my right hand middle finger I had a broken nail. My finger was bleeding profusely because of the broken nail. Three minutes later after the accident my parents ran upstairs to see what happened.

I couldn’t tell them what happened because I was shaken from everything that happened. Then finally I told them. “ I tried to watch ANT’s but I couldn’t reach the TV and the VCR so I decided to climb the drawers to the dresser to get to the TV and turn it on.” My mom screamed “Are you crazy!!!”  I felt so bad. My mom saw my bloody hand and she panicked. “ We are going to probably have to take you to the doctors so that you can get some treatment.” I agreed and we headed off. We finally reached our destination, the doctors office. A place where I did not want to be. Every time I went into a doctors office I always had to get a shot but I knew that this time I didn’t have to get a shot because I had a broken finger and a broken nail. “ Jalen Smith” the nurse yelled. “Come follow me”  We entered the examination room and my mother and I sat down waiting for a doctor.

“Knock Knock Knock” the door slowly opened and it was Dr. White. “ Jalen what happened to you?” I had told him my story while he observed my broken finger and nail. Soon after he put medicine on my wound and he placed a splint on my finger Dr. White said “Next time you should ask mommy or daddy for help rather than doing it by your self because you can get hurt, ok”. “Take care Jalen”. You too doctor” I replied. When we got back home my family and I had cleaned up the mess and we made brownies. After the brownies were made everyone went into the living room and we watched ANT’s and ate our delicious brownies. Even though the end of the day was horrible because of the accident, the bonding with my family was very important and really memorable. I actually thank god for that day because there’s nothing better than family bonding.

The one thing I learned from this experience was that it is good to ask for help whenever you need it. If you know you can’t do something you should always ask someone to help you. Sometimes when you try to do something on your own you may fail to do it and it could lead to something very bad, like a broken arm, damage to something thats not yours, or even being severely injured. So thats why its so important to ask for help.

Element Print Project 2011 (Smith)

Posted by Jalen Smith in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 8:55 am

Rhodium is the name of the element
 Symbol: Rh
 Atomic number: 45
 Atomic weight: 102.905
Item used in picture. A One Gram Coin.

 Used for Jewelry.

There were many different ways in which I came up with this project. One of the most

important ways was doing research for the project. I had got a lot of information about this
specific element. While researching I had decided to pick three different items I might do for

this project. The three items I picked for this project were earrings, a coin and a metal cell

phone. I thought that the coin was more useful because there was a lot of negative and positive

space in it. I also thought it would be fun to carve and matt the picture on a piece of paper. It
actually turned out to be good.

In order to craft such a great project it required a lot of steps. First I had get a piece of Lanolium

block and carefully carve the coin in it. After that I had to carve out the positive and negative spaces.
After this step I had to paint and paste the coin on four different sheets of paper that measured 6 by 6. Next I      had to wait until all four of the sheets of paper are dry and then tear a piece of the paper off to make ridges on    the sides of the paper. After that I had to matt each picture to a 8 by 8 black piece of paper. Then take a picture  of one picture and upload it to the SLA blog. If you met these requirements then you had success with this  project.

Overall I thought that this project was very fun and I really enjoyed doing it. I would really enjoy doing it        again for future references.

If I would have to do this project over again I would make sure that I work in class and out of class. Also I    would make sure that I complete everything on time and be more discipline so that I can get the job done.

4th Quarter BM Portfolio Refelection

                                                             Short Reflection On The Year

Through out Freshman year I have improve tremendously. When I mean tremendously I mean tremendously. When I first came to English class in September I thought that it was going to be a nightmere. I thought that I would do so bad because I thought that my  english teacher Mrs. Dunn was going to be very very stict. In the begining of the year she had told the class that she was a writer for vogue magazine, and that scared me because I assumed she would be so strict knowing that she is such an awesome reader and writer.  Later on in the year I noticed that she wasn’t that bad.

She was very layed back and she aloud you to have do fun things but you had to make sure that you did your work. However there were many challenging things for me in english class this year. It took me a while to adjust to the teaching of the new teacher and environment. I thought that this was the most challenging thing of all. Till this day I have to adjust to certain things knowing that this is my first year of high school. I’m not yet familiar with alot of things yet but I do know that I have accomplished many things that I needed to accomplish.

I know that I have alot of things that I need to get better at but I also know that not everyone is perfect. However I will work harder next year in english class to accomplish what ever I didn’t accomplish in this years english class. There were also some relatively easy parts that I had accomplished in english class this year. This year I had did a better job with communication skills and I asked for help when ever I needed it. I got very good grades in english this year and I am really proud of that. I am truly blessed to have been apart of englsih 1 this year and I will truly miss the class itself and my teacher Mrs. Dunn.

I thought that she did a great job teaching us the english material and also putting her best foot forward in helping the students better understand english related stuff. The one thing I learned about this class other than english is that students should never beat themselves up and stress out about a letter grade. Always try your best in what ever you do and know that you are more than a conquerer through jesus christ. That’s all folks.

                                                  Macbeth Character Analysis
For this project each student had to create a piece that demonstrated one characters developement and growth throughout Macbeth. We had to use quotes from the play to illustrate the transformation of Macbeth or Lady Macbeth. This project had to have a thesis statement, character quotes and a crafted conclusion that ties it all together. For this project I chose Macbeth. Below basically shows the whole process of the project and what it entailed.

                                                                    Macbeth Character Analysis

                                                              Quarter 1

Thesis:  At the start of the play, Macbeth is apprehensive about being aggressive to become King, but by the end, he turns into a strictly vile man.

In (Act 1 scene 4), Macbeth say’s  “Star’s hide your fears; let not light see my black and deep desires.” Macbeth in this scene is very upset that Malcolm was named prince of Cumberland. Macbeth felt upset inside but he didn’t want to show anyone he was upset. So instead Macbeth dealt with it and he moved on.

In (Act 2 scene 1) Macbeth has just talked to Lady Macbeth about the witches prophecy.  Lady Macbeth tries to force Macbeth to kill the king but Macbeth doesn’t want to. Macbeth ask’s “Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand?” Macbeth meant that he see’s a dagger and he wants use it on something but he complains that he right know has fatal vision, so he is becomes a little demonic.

In (Act 2 scene 3)(p. 29) Macbeth say’s that “ I am afraid to think what I have done” . Macbeth is very upset about the fact that he had killed King Duncan because right before King Duncan was killed, King Duncan gave him a promotion to be the Thane of Glamis. His wife Lady Macbeth pressured him to kill Duncan. In this case, because of this, he was named the next King of Cawdor. In Macbeth’s mind he would have thought that he didn’t have to be picked to become the Thane of Glamis, but because of his and Lady Macbeth’s greed he tried his best to

get everything he wanted and that was to kill King Duncan so that Macbeth could become king.

(Act 2 scene 3)(p.35) say’s “O, yet I do repent me of my furry that I did kill them”. This Quote mean’s that Macbeth regret’s and he is very afraid to admit that he killed those who were in the chamber. The guards were the victims who were killed and their hands and faces were covered with blood and so were the daggers. Lenox had brought the news that they were dead.  “We hear our bloody cousins are best owed in England and Ireland, not confessing

parricide.” (Act 3 scene 1)(p. 40) Macbeth means that he hears the people in Ireland and England and talking about the parricide and what happening about the killing and how dreadful he is.

When the ghost of Banquo shows up at dinner and sit’s in Macbeth’s seat Macbeth say’s

“ Blood hath been shed ere now, I” th” olden time, Ere humane statute purged the gentle

weal.” (Act 3 scene 4)(p. 53). This means that, blood has been shed and now the compassion has

gotten rid of his patient’s for this ghost. No one see’s this ghost but Macbeth. Macbeth wants

to prove that he see’s the ghost. Macbeth then goes crazy because the ghost of Banquo is sitting

at the dinner table and the people at the table thinks he’s lot’s his mind.

In (Act 5 scene 1)(p.68) the quote states that Macbeth say’s “Infected be the air whereon they ride, and damned all those that trust them!” means that when the Macduff’s men travel to Birnam wood the air should be toxic and the men should die from the air, and for those who

trust Macduff’s plans, be damned (cursed). Macduff is going to try and get Siward, the Earl of

Northumberland’s 10 thousand men together so that they can defeat Macbeth together.

Everyone’s hope’s are very high now because they really want Macbeth to be defeated so that

there could be another king of Cawdor.

In (Act 4 scene 1)(p. 68) say’s, “ The very Firstlings of my heart shall be the firstlings of my hand.” This means that Macbeth has a lot of thoughts about his title as king and let them come true. In this scene Macbeth say‘s “to crown my thoughts with acts, be it thought and done.

(Act 5 scene 3)(p.88)  say’s “Go prick thy fear, Thou lily-livered boy.” Macbeth meant to get over what ever you were thinking and talking about. Suck it up and take it like a man. Stop your sulking and get over your fears. The servant, Satin complained about the 10 thousand men who were coming and he had fears. Macbeth didn’t want him to talk about it because it would bring him down.  In (Act 5 scene 7)(p. 94) it say’s “But swords I smile at, weapons laugh to scorn, brandished by man that’s of a woman born.” This meant that Macbeth’s weapons used in battle made him feel elated because Macbeth truly believe’s in violence and the weapons are

apart of violence. In this scene was during the war and how the weapons all motivated Macbeth

to do better fighting.

In conclusion the quotes showed Macbeth’s aggression. Through out the play Macbeth became more and more angry because of the witches prophesy. These quote’s basically go along with the certain changes that Macbeth is going through. In the quotes they show how Macbeth start’s out being calm but when the witches prophecy’s kick’s in, he goes completely crazy.

                                                        Memoir Vignette
For this project we had to craft a memoir vignette of our own and utilize stylistic devices to make our personal piece of non-fiction interesting for an audience. The writing process for our vignette had to have full in depth brainstorming, outlining, rough drafting, final drafting and peer review. This vignette had to be powerful, compact and makes an impact with stylistic devices and other interesting aspects of storytelling. Below basically shows the whole process of the project and what it entailed.

-“Portland Covered Under The White Blanket”-

                                                                                   Quarter 2

“Hello Travelers I have very bad news, all Flights will be cancelled due to the snow storm, Thank you” (Dialogue). I spent 5 treacherous hours stuck at the busy airport of Minneapolis due to a snow storm (Opener). The end of December is always a bad time to travel to certain places. Flight Delays were every where. People were talking loudly, sleeping on the floors and devouring all the food they could possibly eat at the fast food restaurants. You would have thought that the world was coming to an end with a fleet of so many people screaming and panicking. Many swarms of airport security men patrolled the airport in search for unaccompanied minors. Rolling wheels of suite cases make the annoying roar sounds.

I felt like saying, THIS IS TORTURE, Beeee Quuiiet to all those crazy people!!!! My grandmother and I had to escape before the people ate us alive (Hyperbole).  We decided to go to the Mall of Americas, the worlds largest mall. As we cruised down the escalator to the metro train, the loudness became completely silent like when a person turns the volume dial slowly on a radio (Simile). We took the quiet, empty train to the Mall Of America’s so that we could kill at least a little bit of time before our next exhausting red eye flight to Portland Oregon.

After boarding the narrow locomotive we sat down in the red fabric seats and went for a bumpy, uncomfortable ride to the mall. Finally, we got off the Metro and entered the gates of heaven (Metaphor). As I walked in the warm air hit my face. I was amazed at the large doors and the enormous mall. There was red carpet, expensive stores, an Aquarium, a mini Theme Park and a big fat man wearing red with a white beard called Santa Claus on a large poster (Humor). This was a place were I wanted to be.

I felt like I won 1 million dollars. The shoppers were so calm. There were no rolling wheels, no food devouring people and no people sleeping on the floors (Repetition For Effect).   This was a place to chill out and shop. Thank god!!! For five hours I went on a mini spending spree, visiting many of the stores. Nike Factory, Best buy, H&M and Hollister were all in the same walking distance. The walking distance was shorter than the yellow brick road itself (Metaphor).

Time had easily eluded from us and we needed to head back to the airport quick, fast and in a hurry . So we did. Sadly I had to say my farewells to my beloved shopping mall. After a short period of time we arrived at the Minneapolis airport and everyone was just so peaceful. That was because half of the travelers from earlier were all gone. Then there came a great noise. “All Passengers traveling to Portland, Oregon please board the plane at Gate C7 right know.”

Without hesitation my grandmother and I ran to the jetty so fast I thought I saw fire behind us. “ Excuse me mam and Sir, may I have your tickets (Dialogue). We kindly gave the man our tickets and boarded the aircraft. I searched high and low for seat 9 and found it. “Aaaahhh yes, right next to the window” I said (Dialogue). As soon as everyone was seated the airplane pushed off from the gate and went straight onto the runway.

5,4,3,2,1 we blasted into the dark cloudy sky. I tried to stay awake but really couldn’t. My eyes closed, opened, closed, opened and closed (Repetition For Effect) . I fell asleep. AAAHHH!!!!, I woke up to the loud announcement on the PA system. “We are landing at the Portland Airport in 3 minutes. Thank you for riding with us on US Airways.” Looking towards my left I saw the sweet twinkling city lights of Portland Oregon covered in a white blanket of snow. I then quietly whispered to myself, “I am so happy I finally got away from that disaster and I can finally call this place home for a few weeks.”

                                    The Odyssey Compare/Contrast Essay

For this project we had to craft an essay comparing a character or event in The Odyssey to another work of art. We had to examine how other artist can use and change the archetypes from The Odyssey to explain a human theme, feeling, or experience. The process of this project envolved brainstorming, collecting evidence (quotations), crafting a thesis, outlining, analyzing quotations, rough drafting, peer review and writing a final draft. For this project i chose Everett the main character in O Brother Were Art Thou. Below basically shows the whole process of the project and what it entailed.

“The Tales of Everett & Odysseus”

                                                            Quarter 3

Although Everett and Odysseus loved their wives, one wife showed more compassion for her partner. The other wife had an interest in his money instead of their relationship. In the movie, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, Penny’s marriage is driven by Everett’s money. In order for her to get the money she must divorce him. All of Penny’s actions are driven by her lust for money. Penny needs the money to support their kids.

Odysseus was an extremely strong, brave and courageous man when it came to handling big tasks. However, when his wife Penelope came near him he became more gentle and loving. On the other hand, Everett was a very silly and slick person when it came to getting his men out of trouble, but when his wife Penny was near him he showed a positive and serious connection to her. Penny didn’t show the positive connection to him.

While suffering the long tragic trails Everett seemed to be determined to provide for his wife and children. He thought that he could get back with his wife and kids, but when he gets to his wife Penny, Penny denies him of being a true husband and father to his 6 young children. “ By saying, ”I don’t love you anymore Everett. I’m getting married to Vernon T. Waldrip”.  Even though Everett tries to become a better father and husband by changing the wrong things that he has done in his life and tries not to repeat the mistakes that he has done before; Penny’s anger and love for Vernon T. Waldrip overpowers the marriage. This shows that love can be a driving force in a relationship.

When he visits his wife Penny, Everett tries to work his problems out but has a difficult time trying to make Penny forgive him. Everett say’s “Penny I don’t do the things I used to do anymore. Please forgive me for all of the things I have done. We can be a family.” So at the end of the movie Everett wants to get back with Penny and he says he would give Penny the ring from when they got married. Everett then noticed that the ring was 10,000 ft in the lake. Penny had said to Everett “ In order to marry me you must go and get that ring in the lake”.

In, The Odyssey, Odysseus has trouble trying not to reminisce about his wife Penelope and his children. Knowing that he is separated from his family, Penelope has many doubt’s that Odysseus would come back to see her and the kids. Driven by love, Odysseus comes back to Ithaca and finds his wife but he comes back with a surprise. Penelope decides to set up targets in the hallway and she wants the suitors and Odysseus to shoot arrows at the targets. Who ever shot the arrows in the targets marries Penelope. The reason why Penelope did this was because she wanted to try to intimidate Odysseus and the suitors. She knew that Odysseus was a great shooter and that he would shoot all of the arrows.  While Odysseus was gone he really had to push himself to go back to the land of Ithica. He had to be there with his wife Penelope and his children. He couldn’t give up on his children and his wife. So that basically pushed Odysseus to come back to Ithica.

In Conclusion both couples get through their hardships, but different things motivate them. Penelope really loves Odysseus not just because of his material things but also because of his personality. However, Everett might struggle with his relationship because his wife Penny uses him to get his money and other material things. In both of these cases the main characters reveal that they have strong compassion for their partners and that they have different ways in which they handle their relationships.

For the creative project we had to take all the information we learned about macbeth's aggression in the story and put it into a visual project. We had to include a thesis statement, quotes and a powerful conclusion. I chose to do a Slideshow for a visual. Below shows everything that the project entailed.
Macbeth Creative Project
(Below)

For this project we had to do a brief project describing a book that we read on our own. This project had to include a summary and the books background information. You could have done this project on a slideshow, movie, podcast song or anything else creative. For this project I had chose to do a slideshow. Below shows everything that the project entailed.

Independent Reading Project (Below)

Four Top Journal Entries:
Define Hero and who is a hero in you life?
I believe a hero is a person who saves you from danger. I have many heros
in my life. One of my important hero's are my parents. My parents
demonstrate great parenting and also great success. They teach me
how to be a hard worker and when I get older and have children be
be a great provider for them. They show me how to handle my
different obstacles and they are teachers about life. Without them I
would not have any success in doing things. I am so thankful to have
a hero because I wouldn't know were I would be.

Was there a time when you wanted to switch your identity?
There are sometimes when I feel like changing my race to another.
Sometimes people discriminate againts black people and it is kind of
hard to take that in especially if you are black. Sometimes some black
people don't know how to act and they get in trouble and I some times
get upset because my race acts up. Seeing a lot of African Americans on
the news for murder is just so embarrassing. It seems as if some African
Americans don't care about their lives or the lives of others. We are known
to be lazy at times. Not all but I would say a hand full of them but I have to
say that I am very proud to be black because we are concuerers and we came
a long way. I believe that my ancestors were true hero's and i would want to
follow in there foot steps.

Does A Lot Of People Depend On You For Anything?
A lot of people depend on me for a lot of things because I am a very mature person and I have a lot of goals for my life. My parents have a lot of expectations for me because I am very organized and I have great communication skills. My parents know that I am going to be very successful in life because I have a lot of plans for my life and I am very serious about it. I have a lot of expectations for myself also. I am a very strict person and when I want something I would go out and get it. I am very hard on myself about school work and other things because I know that when you are hard on your self about things you get a lot of things done. You sometimes come out stronger. The expectations that I have for myself and the expectations other people have about me are very similar. However I believe that my expectations for myself are more harsher. However I believe that if you put your mind and soul towards things you will get it done.

If You Really Knew Me?

If you really knew me, you would know that I am courages serious and faithful. If you really knew me, you would know that I am competitive and sociable. If you really knew me, you would know that I am old spirited and mature. One important thing you would know about me is that I am gods child.

For this project each student had to pick a character from the book The Odyssey and had to research that person and pick quotes from that character. The student also had to include a powerful thesis statement. We had to make this project look visual. For this project I had picked Prometheus. Below shows what the project entailed.

Do You Care About Your Environment? #3

Posted by Jalen Smith in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:56 pm
So last time we left off with some information about the different toxins that are going into the air and what we should be aware of. This time we will be talking about the emission trends & projections of the environment. From statistic's the Fifth U.S Climate Action Report concluded, in assessing current trends, that green house gas emissions increased by 17 percent from 1990-2007. Over time, the U.S. GDP increased by 65 percent and the  population increased by 21%. The  dominant factor affecting U.S. emission trends is CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion, which increase by 21.8 percent over the 17 years period. Methane and nitrous oxide emissions decreased by 5 percent and 1 percent which is a good thing. The decline in nitrous oxide emissions is largely due to the installation of newer N2O control technologies in motor vehicles throughout the past decade. I think that we should try to increase the production of hybrid cars instead of continuing to make cars that give off gas. If we stop the production of gas powered cars then the percentage of N2O would decrease rapidly.

Do You Care About Your Environment? #2

Posted by Jalen Smith in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 10:32 pm
After reveiving more information about environmental issues I had noticed that we are at high risk's of suffering big consequences. The reason why I am saying this is because we are really abusing our environment. We are not taking care of it the way we are suppose to take care of it. It is the smallest things that can cause big problems. Such as throwing away trash or even driving to work in a car. These things can really impact our world on so many levels. The EPA said that certain toxins were released and could have major impacts for our environment. From 2004 to 2005, dioxin releases decreased by 23 percent and mercury releases fells by 9 percent. Petroleum refining releases dropped 10 percent, transportation equipment registered a 6 percent decrease and chemical manufacturing cut releases dropped 4 percent. Everyone seems to be very concerned because no one knows what will happen in the future. Also people are very concerned about the water that we drink after the disaster in Japan. As you may know the chemicals that were released from the power plant got into the ocean. People are afraid that the water that we drink could have the chemicals in it. I think that now in some stores they might raise the prices of the water because of this great tragedy. It would be much harder to find cleaner water now that this had happened. With out clean water many people would die because of dehydration.

Do You Care About Your Environment? #1

Posted by Jalen Smith in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 3:08 pm
You may already know that this nation is struggling trying to make the environment better for people to live. We are polluting our air and our earth by different chemicals and wastes. We are all in danger for the future because with out a clean earth we wouldn't be able to survive very long. There are many health risks underway and we need to take this in consideration.

For this project I am studying environmental issues. I am studying how things can be

used differently in order to help the environment be a better place for people to live. The reason why Im interested in studying this is because I believe that it is very important to actually know whats going on in the environment. Many things can affect us and we need to know what we need to do to make this place a better place.

In my research I learned about the different effects global warming could have on us and how we will have higher risks in getting different diseases from the toxins that are going around in. I also learned that there would be a high change in the weather because of the pollution.

In order to try to better the environmental issues we all need to make an effort by trying to save all things and try not to pollute the world with trash. It is very important that we do this because if we don’t we will suffer the consequences. We can all help overcome this but we have to be serious and want to make an effort to change.

Art Slide - Smith

Posted by Jalen Smith in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 2:03 pm
In this project we had to create a prospective picture of one side of the art room. First I had to draw a square in the middle of the paper and draw a center point at the center of the paper. Then I had to draw lines from the center of the paper to the sides of the paper to complete the walls. We had to include in our picture everything on the wall that you have chosen. I had included the counter, cabinets, bookcases and the materials used for the art studio. By doing this I had to draw many diagonal and horizontal lines using a ruler and of course a pencil. I also had to include lights, air vents, windows and the pictures that are on the wall. Those were the most important things in the room. I believe the most easiest thing I had to draw for this project was the air vents, the lights, windows and the class room door. I believe the most difficult was the cabinets, bookcases, the ceiling tiles and most of all, the tables. The reason why they were so hard was because they were all 3D. It is quiet difficult trying to figure out  how to draw a 3D picture. All and all I thought that this project was a bit challenging but it was very very fun. I enjoyed doing this project and I hope I do another like this one day.

Reflection for 10-20-30

Posted by Jalen Smith in African American History - Sherif on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 9:23 am
The point of doing the 10-20-30 project was to find out from different people what kind of music they used to listen 10, 20 and 30 years ago and what kind of events happened around that time. I believe that this project was very important because you got to learn about the different events that people had to go through before you were born. I also believe that it was a great learning experience to be very thankful for what you have and what you didn’t have to go through.

For example back then in 1965 my grandmother had to live the life of racism. Her life was very hard because she couldn’t go to the places she wanted to go to and she couldn’t do the things she wanted to do. So right know we have the right to do things we want to do and we have better opportunities. So from this project I learned to be very thankful for not living the life in 1965 because if you did you would live the life of racism also.

I believe the best part of the project was to get pictures from the internet and get music from gosong.net. I believe the most difficult part of the project was to find the different events in the year 1965. On the New York Times website the events didn’t go all the way back to 1965. Instead it stopped at 1975. Overall I had so much fun doing this project and I learned many things from it.

    Jalen Smith New Slideshow

Posted by Jalen Smith in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 9:25 am

For the old slide I felt as if everything wasn't big enough and the words needed to be much bigger so that people can see it. For the car, the car had full contrast but the road was hard to see. So I chose to change the road so that people can see the road. I also chose to make the picture bleed off of the page because the old picture I thought was to dull.

In the new slide I thought that the picture was great because it has great contrast. The poem goes along with the slide show and the frases goes very well with the slide show. I felt as if this was a very good slideshow and I am satisfied with it.
