Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:04 am

Questions:
- What is your element?
- What are some things your element are used for?
- How did you come up with the idea for your print?
- What steps did you take from your idea for the print to the final print?
- What are your thoughts on the project?
- What would you do differently if you did this project again?

Answers:
My element is called cobalt.

My element is use to make phones, parts of cars, for teeth and bullets.

My idea was that I would draw a poisonous frog and a skull and crossbones since this element is know to be poisonous this will tell them just that.

The steps I took to get to my Idea of a poisonous frog and a skull and crossbones was that at first I started to think that the it a German name means evil spirit. Then I thought about bullets but then it came to me since it is a poisonous metal I might as well make have something to do with poison.

This project was very fun we had to do a lot but I liked it a more then the other projects that we had.

What I would have do differently is that I would have thought of something more then just a
poisonous frog and a skull and crossbones I would have look into the project more and I might have fun something that I like more then what I had.

Element Print Project 2011

Cool, isn't it? I would say so! This picture had so many steps. Types of art like this are called linoleum block printing. This was on of the hardest projects I did all year because it involved so many steps and time. And even a few bandages. Yes, I said bandages.

Anyway, my element in called indium, also known as In on the periodic table. The atomic number of this element is 49. Indium is usually seen in solid wiring form and is very rare. It is used in many things such as film coatings for motor materials and used to make LCD lights. But don't think that indium is all cool because of the low amount of radiation it carries.

My inspiration for this picture is because of the high pitch sound the element gives off when it is places into a fire. Henceforth,y the scientist holding the indium over the Bunsen burner.

Doing this project was quite hard. There were many steps even before the carving. Our teacher, Ms. Hull wanted us to draw three 6 by 6 inch draft prints. The first draft which was just the symbol and the atomic number. Then came a coil of indium. The last picture was the one I chose, which was the scientist experimenting with indium. After choosing the draft I wanted to copy onto the block, I let Ms. Hull take a look on my block and she gave me the thumbs up to go with carving my block. In the midst of carving my block, I cut myself with the carver. Instead of crying, I was laughing. I laughed my way over to Ms. Hull and she told me to wash it off. When I was done carving we poured paint on to the table and and painted our blocks with it.

To me, this project was awesome. I started off first with rough edges and then in the end you see some clear, clean cuts on my block. That was where I finally learned how to carve a linoleum block. That is also one of the things I would change in the project. Take away all of my rough edges.

Element Print Project 2011.

For this project I had the element Yttrium, it is the 39th element on the product table with a symbol of "Y".  Yttrium is used to make the red coloring in T.V sets  and can be used to make synthesized diamond. I came up with the idea for my print by looking up pictures of what yttrium makes. When I made the final print the chain of the neckless was shorter then the new one. I thought this project was fun and kind of easy. If I did this project again I would take all of my prints home with me rather than leave them in the class.

this is my draft all of my other prints went missing in the class room.

Element Print Project 2011

The element that I am doing is Manganese, the symbol is Mn and it is number 25 on the periodic table. Some uses of this element are that the dioxide is used in drying paints and it is used in steel, batteries, axles, and rail switches. The way I came up with the idea was that I chose three ideas and then thought that batteries would be cool to do because I didn't know what was in them.

When I first had my idea for my print I was going to have five batteries; three standing and two laying down, that was going to have every detail that a battery have. Then when I was moving forward to putting it on paper and trying to find my negative and positive space, I had came to a problem. The problem was some of the line for the print shouldn't have been there and that some of the picture wasn't going to be able to be seen because of the negative space. So I did it over and had some out and had some line thicker. After getting the perfect picture that I wanted I transferred it to the linoleum block and then printed it by putting paint on it then putting it on paper. Then I did the final touches by ripping the edges off.

When I was working on this project, I thought that it was going to be super easy but I was wrong, there was some difficulties. One was cutting out the picture in the linoleum block. Another thought was that it was going to be fun  and it was. If I was to do it different I would choose another idea because I wouldn't mind going through that experience again since now I know what i am doing.

Fluorine Erupts
Fluorine Erupts
My element is Fluorine. Fluorine and its compounds are used in producing uranium. Fluorochlorohydrocarbons are used in refrigeration applications. Fluorine is used to produce many chemicals, including several high-temperature plastics. The presence of sodium fluoride in drinking water at the level of 2 ppm may cause mottled enamel in teeth, skeletal fluorosis, and may be associated with cancer and other diseases. However, topically applied fluoride (toothpaste, dental rinses) has been shown to help reduce dental caries.

Since fluoride is explosive and reacts to all of the other elements, I figured I would do a print of the symbol "F9" exploding.

We had to brainstorm and think of why our element is special, then sketch out three ideas that we possible wanted to use. We had to decide the best one and trace it on tracing paper. Next, we transferred the drawing via the tracing onto the
linoleum block. Finally we cut the block and printed it onto good paper.

To show off our elements, we pasted them all on a big periodic table on the 2nd floor
.

I think that this was a fun, but challenging project that took some skills to accomplish. If I had to do this project again, I would pick a different drawing that I wanted to print.

Copper Element

Posted by Raeven Maddox in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 9:19 am

 Element: Copper
Symbol: CU
Atomic Number: 29
# of Protons: 29
# of Electrons: 29
Atomic Mass: 63.546

Discovery:
Copper was one of the earliest elements that were known to man. It has been around for more than 10,000 years. Copper is an excellent conductor of heat and electricty Copper's normal color is red which is made easier to identify. The symbol of copper, CU, comes from the Latin word Cuprum. Like aluminum, is 100% recyclable.

Some of the uses for copper are:
  • used for electrical wiring, pipe water supplies,
  • vacuum tubes use copper
  • some structures such as the statue of liberty, are made with copper
  • many musical instruments are made out of copper.
  • cookware

  • My element for this project was Bromine 35.
  • It is used in industrial applications and it is also a strong oxidizing agent
  • It can be used to purify water.
  • First i had to make several draft drawings after doing research, then sketch it on special paper, the draw it backwards on the template, after that I scraped out the positive space so I could paint the template and make the stamp.
  • I think it was fun, especially because we got to make several different stamps.
  •  I would make the stamps clearer to understand

The element I was assigned for my element project was potassium. Two things my element is used for is fertilizer and it is in bananas.I came up with this print idea by researching and I found out that if you mix potassium with water it explodes. The first step I took in order to make this a final print was to draw my sketch in my sketch book. The second step I was to trace my sketch onto the tracing paper. The third step was to Trace it onto the linoleum block and cut out the positive or the negative space. I chose positive space. Then I just printed my linoleum block. I thought that this project was very fun. If I were to do this project over again I would spend more time making my prints look nice.

Element Print Project 2011

1.) My element is Boron.
2.) It is used in things such as fiberglass insulation as well as a containment or nuclear rods. These are the primary uses

3.) I had realized that boron can create a green flame and is also kept in capsule like I had drawn. Therefore placing a bunch of capsules falling into green fire with the atomic number and name seemed like a cool idea.

4.) I tried to make the fire as detailed as I could and based it off of an image I had found. For the capsules I used a basic pill shape.

5.) It's alright. I think that the picture already shown o the periodic table we had seen looked much better in comparison.

6.) If I could do this project over,  I would focus more on making the pills detailed. I might actually not have put the pills in but kept the fire without a doubt.

Element Print Project 2011

For the project, the element that as chosen for was chlorine.

The steps that I took form making my idea for the print into a final print h
were drawing different possible ways that my idea could be portrayed. I looked up different uses for my element and the harms that can it can have on people. Then, I drew two of the uses and one of the harms. I picked the best one of those three drawings. I traced the one I wanted to become my final print on tracing paper. I used the tracing paper to draw the print on the linoleum block. For the linoleum block, I decide that I wanted the body, the liquid, and the can of chlorine to be the positive space. Then, everything else to be the negative space.
I think I would chose a different drawing, if I could anything different because I would want to carve out more things.
I thought that the project was really because I never worked with a linoleum block before and it was cool carving the drawing out.
