Maria Latorre Capstone

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Capstone - Kay - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 10:37 pm

Topic Summary:

My goal for this project was to be able to develop a course curriculum for Advance Chem. I also want to be able to understand the effect that a teacher puts into his or her curriculum. I decided to do Advance Chem. because I really love Chemistry. It’s one of my top courses that I would love to major in once I’m in college. I thought that this would give me insight into what a class structure would look like and what are the big points that a student needs to get out of the course. I didn’t know how hard this would have been because as a student we don’t really think of all the work that goes into making a successful curriculum that every student can understand. I didn’t think it would be easy but I also never thought it would be this hard.

Project Abstract:

The initial inspiration behind this project was that I really wanted to be able to say I did something that no one else has ever done. I wanted to be different one of a kind and that is what I got. I have always loved science and that was my second inspiration. I just never thought that this could be the hardest thing I could do. I had a hard time keeping up with my capstone, a healthy social life and good grades. Sometimes I would over work myself or stay up until late just to write up two or three labs; but all in all I think that this is great I was able to get things done. I also learned that a teacher life isn’t as easy as people may think.

Capstone Bibliography

Hall, James ed. Experimental Chemistry Seventh Edition. Boston Massachusetts: Hartford, 2007. Print.

This is a very good source, I really like this source because it has a lot of information and this information is really useful to my capstone. I the reason is very simple, in the book there are different types of work that can be done in class and that is very important to know. Like the “Idea Gas Law” this is one of the topics that I will be going over because for a Advance Chemistry class this something that everyone should know or should learn when taking this class. This source has short description about the topics that are written inside and then it gives you work that you can do and things that you can explain to the students. Also if I could understand what is happening in the book then the student might understand, too.

http://www.esciencelabs.com/files/product_pdfs/Chemistry_Version_4_Ideal_Gas_Law_Sample_Lab.pdf

I selected this source because it has background information that can support one of the many topics that I will be going over in my Capstone. This also has definitions that we can go over in my class curriculum. I feel like this will work out for me because I learned a lot and I think that this will be really cool and the information is very interesting. I hope that by using this source I will be able to put it together so that I can help the student get the general gizzest of what is happening in the class.

Janet L. Kolodner, Joseph S. Krajcik, Daniel C. Edelson, Brian J. Reiser, Mary L. Starr, eds. Project-Based Inquiry Science Living Together. New York: Jones, 2009. Print.

This is one of the sources that can be help with understanding and teaching. I think that it will be useful to my capstone because this has a lot of facts and information that a teacher should know and that they can teach the student. I think that this is something every important because it was able to teach me new things and if I’m learning something new then that means that maybe the others don’t know it too. This is just to reinforce what I know and what I can teach others for my capstone.

Myers R. Thomas, Tocci Salvatore, Oldham B. Keith, eds. Chemistry Teacher Edition. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2004. Print.

This resources is a book about advanced chemistry. It’s a manual that helps teachers teach students the principles of advanced chemistry. The book tells of different teaching techniques and the best way to execute them to students. This can be helpful due to the fact that I want students to learn something new. I think that this will help me see what a student know and what they don’t know. Since I’m a student I can tell because if I don’t know it then the other students might not know it.

"Next Generation Science Standards." Next Generation Science Standards. Next Generation Science Standards and the Associated Logo Are Registered Trademarks of Achieve, Inc., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.nextgenscience.org/>.

This source is used to understand what a student at grade k-12 should learn in science class. I will be looking at the grade 6-12 because this is when chem comes into play. I think that this will be used a lot in my capstone because this can help me structur out a class that can work out. It shows the necessary basics to start of a class and also what they should know and learn. There is a lot of information you can get out of this website. You click on one of the topics and it shows you “Science and Engineering Practices”, “Disciplinary Core Ideas” and  “Crosscutting Concepts”. Once you clicked one of the topics it takes you to another website that give you useful information.

"Small-Scale Acid Rain Lab." YouTube. YouTube, 18 Dec. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q6k822lSm4>.

This is a very useful youtube video. The reason for that is because it talks about a lab that I plan to have in my capstone, and it also has a teacher explaining how he would set up the project in his class. I think that this can be very useful because of that fact. This is a great way that I can compare with. Thus why I have it as a source. This also shows you about what you'll need for the lab. Like every chemical and what we are going to do with it. He also explains what had happen when the acid rain was around minerals and organisms .

"Support Materials." CEA Rewarding Learning. N.p., 2014. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.rewardinglearning.org.uk/microsites/chemistry/revised_gce/support/>.

I found this source useful because it this one pdf source that I can used. It’s called Clarification of Terms in CCEA GCE Chemistry this can be very useful because it’s good to know terms; and I was planning to go over some terms that are explained in this pdf. I can also hand it to the students so that they have something that isn’t just google to find a definition for science words that they don’t know or do not remember.

Thompson, Robert Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments All Lab, No Lecture.: Alison Kendall ed. Sebastopol CA: Dale, 2008. Print.

When I reviewed this source I thought that it was reliable and a good source to look at. I was able to find a variety of labs that could work well for my capstone. I thought that it was very informative and had great process guids to do the lab. Though I might need to change some chemicals that they asked to use because we might not have them in school so we have to think of something that is close to being the same chemical. In all this is a very useful source that I plan to be using throughout my capstone.

"Understanding by Design Exchange by ASCD." Understanding by Design Exchange by ASCD. ASCD 69th Annual Conference & Exhibit Show, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.ubdexchange.org/>.

I selected this source because of the information that it had provided. It helped me know what is needed to make a class. Like the basic understanding of the class what a student should know and what the plan is to make them better. I feel like this could help a lot because it helped me see that the teachers need a ending goal and also how to treat other students because some are slower than the others and sometime a student won’t ask for help so I would need to know when that is happening and also I have to be aware of the students reaction to the work. To make sure that they could learn and understand.

Wiggins, Grant. "Authentic Education - Welcome to Authentic Education." Authentic Education - Welcome to Authentic Education. Authentic Education, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.authenticeducation.org/ae_bigideas/>.

This source will just be used to support the other sources that I have because this will only have information on how to make a class; and what is need to make this class.

Write to Connect

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Reading, Writing, and Rising Up - Rami - C on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 1:13 pm
Writing help me connect to others. That meaning that it helps me understand the perspective of another person. It helps me see the way the world revolves for them. How things work out and how things don't work out. It helps me see into the world and livelihood of the writer. Even if it's a fiction writing "you" can still see and understand the way the writer thinks.

I write a lot outside of class. I use words in order to communicate what i'm feeling. It's all written in a document. I have about five other documents full of feelings and full of things that happen to me all the time. Then another way of writing that we all use is texting, emailing, or writing letters. I use texting in order to communicate with friends and family. I use text to talk to others about projects and work we have to do. Then email is another way to communicate too. I use it the same way that I use texting. The same goes for letters.

Bread and Rose

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 10:23 am

The reason she wanted a job is to send money back to the rest of her family in Mexico.

That was the first right that they had violated y era el “derecho a la libertad de expresión”.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Yo he intentado a ayudar el gente.

It talks about at the time of the occurrence that it was the worst spill that happened in America during that time. There were so many birds and marine animals that were killed over the 1300 miles the spill has affected. Since the spill had expanded to 1300 miles, it really damaged the fish industry of sorts. The government has really put a lot of money to the process of repair. The Federal Court was still giving money in 2006, when they reduced the amount given, then later reduced it more. There has been way too much money given for repair and recovery. Although this accident was extremely bad, it help create GOOD organizations about the earth and the environment and really make more people aware from then to now. This article is really information of the different things that came out of the horrific oil spill whether good or bad and what came upon it.

The person who happened to be there was not licensed by the Coast Guard to pilot a tanker, which means he is being charged with Federal regulations.

Deep reading of "Hamlet By: William Shakespeare"

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in English 3 - Rami on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 8:45 pm

The best playwright in history is William Shakespeare. Shakespeare stories always seem to include death, life, sadness, madness, etc. making all the emotion shine out through his books. It’s hard to understand the real meaning behind what William Shakespeare writes. Not only do the words make it hard to understand but the emotion in every scene that help make people think of why someone would act a certain way. Since Shakespeare put so much emotion and feeling into his books, his words hide the deep meanings that are actually behind them. One play that represents this is one of Shakespeare's most famous play, Hamlet. This play is know to be one of his best play, but also know to be the one with the worst/best conflicts out of all of his writings.

A scene that had a great impact in the story is when hamlet is talking to himself about a player that had come to his house. Hamlet wasn’t getting why this player was crying like when he had said, “What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, That he should weep for her?” (I.ii). Hamlet questioned the reason that the player had for cried because the player had never met the woman. Just like the woman had never met the player. He was think deeply into the fact that this man cried. He was thinking about his own self at that time to. Thinking about the unjust that had happen to his beloved father. The unjust that only he knows of and that he can’t let go of. So much pain that curses his existence.

“What would he do, Had he the motive and the cue for passion That I have?”(I.ii).The player weeped for Hecuba so then the player would definitely cry for the lost of a great king, also known as Hamlet’s father. “He would drown the stage with tears And cleave the general ear with horrid speech, Make mad the guilty and appal the free, Confound the ignorant, and amaze indeed The very faculties of eyes and ears.”(lines 587-591). Hamlet is thinking of a plan that involves the players. By doing this he plans to lure out the suspected criminal that killed his father.

He wasn't sure on whether or not to trust the ghost so he set up the play to see the reactions of claudius. He wanted to make sure that his uncle was actually guilty of killing King Hamlet. He felt that he was the worst person in the world. Hamlet blames himself for the death of his father. Since Hamlet's father is gone he feel like he can relate to the play that he asked the player to perform for him. “Yet I, A dull and muddy-mettled rascal, peak, Like John-a-dreams, unpregnant of my cause, And can say nothing; no, not for a king, Upon whose property and most dear life A damn'd defeat was made. Am I a coward? Who calls me villain? breaks my pate across? Plucks off my beard, and blows it in my face? Tweaks me by the nose? gives me the lie i' the throat, As deep as to the lungs? who does me this?”(I.ii) Hamlet has a lot of questions that he would like to get answers to that’s why he is planning this play out.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 6:45 am

"Box Of Dreams" Artist Statement

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Physics - Echols on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 8:38 pm
Artist Statement:

I had my idea really fast, but it's wasn't as easy as others might have thought. I call this my "Box Of Dreams". I had many reason to call it that but the major one is that it represents me a lot. It shows my artistic side, and a few things that I care a lot about in my life. This also has music that goes it. It was very fun to make it. I really liked doing it.

I first started with the idea I want for this project. I had a lot of ideas that came into my head, but I had to make something that would represent me. So I picked the idea of a music box because I love music and I can show my artistic ways better with this idea. So when the idea was set I had to think of a way that I can involve a circuit. We had learn a lot about parallel/series circuit. I was only going to have 4 bulbs in my circuit so a parallel wouldn't work for me. So I made it into a series circuit. I build my circuit and then started constructing it into my music box. I had a switch installed into the circuit.

No todos los demonios son malos.

Mi nombre es María. Soy una cantante. Me importan mucho todas mis amigas y amigos.

No me gusta estar sien moño.
Come ser generosa y responsable.
A mi me gusta conocer nueva personas.

Humanities Portfolio 2012

The first time I stepped into my sophomore English, was like nothing before. From the Beginning to the end; all that we had worked on wasn’t as simple as ninth grade English class, but it also wasn’t that perplex because everyone understood the class/homework that our teacher gave us.

What I would say is that thou it may seem hard and difficult that in reality it’s not hard or difficult, but fun and easy. Like the time we had to write a poem response (“The white man’s Burden”.) I had to rewrite the whole poem in my own way. I also had to rename it; the name that I had given it was Take up a woman's burden.

"The White Man's Burden" response:

Take up a woman's burden by Maria Latorre

Take up the White Man’s burden.

With there self seen world

That no a woman can take away

Show no woman love

and spit on there face

because they an't smart

so better then a white man's burden

Take up a woman's burden.

(go to the link to read the whole version)

It took me a long time and it seemed really hard at first, but when I had started it; it was a whole different story. It was really fun to rewrite something in my own way that I view the world. Then there was the time that I written other Poems. Mr. Block (My English teacher) Named it Poetry Unit. I had two- four weeks to write poems that come from me and not from someone else. My favorite part of this project was when I got to write my utmost favorite poem called Shadows. This poem shows the real me; the way I am the shadow that still live.

There it stand's watching
the shadow
that fallows with out knowing
it watches as they are run around
with pain in it
poor
little shadow
that can never be as happy
but they feel something too
we step over them
and we spit on their faces
the poor little shadow.

(go to the link to read the whole version)

I got to express my feelings to all who reads it, but the fun does not end there. We got to work with a group of people for four weeks. Art in the Open (AIO) was what we had worked on for four weeks. It was The Leah Stein Dance Company that helped us create fun and intriguing art piece that many people liked. This three projects were well very fun to do and very easy. At first it seem very hard and difficult but that was because at first I didn’t know what we had to do, but as soon as I was told it became the most simplest thing that I could do.

Then there were those long moments of time that one had gotten so stressed out  that they stop caring, but what did make people happy and lose their stress was when they had finished a big project and it came out to your type of perfection. Just like the play I had to write this year. I finished it the day it was due. Everything was perfect for me something that might only happen once. My play was about a girl that last her mother and father at a young ago and she then had to take care of her siblings. The time period made it worst on her because this play take place in Italy in the late 1960’s. The name I gave it was Sono la rosa nella mia storia It means I am the rose in my story.

I talked to DeShawn M. about what she thinks of learning Spanish. She told me that when she was in middle school she tried to learn Spanish, but no one thought her right. This made her not want to learn Spanish at all. That is what we manly talked about.

Language Autobiography

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in English 2 - Block on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 6:54 pm
Introduction & Reflection

My language autobiography is about a experience I had in middle school. It shows how word/language affected the way I thought. Words can hurt a lot and I just wanted to show to who ever reads this how much words hurt me.

Language Autobiography

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." That saying was all a very big lie that we all use but never works. The truth is that words hurt a lot more then sticks and stones because at least when time passes the bruises that were on you will not be there anymore, but when it comes to those words, they will always linger in you mind not out of sight. I know this very well because there are words that hurt a lot and keep on repeating themselves each time I think of my middle school. The schools name is William Levering Elementary School, It’s a very old school there was two different building, a new building that was made out of concrete and had bigger windowed. The floors were well made and they aren’t cracked. The old building was made out stone the windows are regular size. The floor was made out of concrete and it was all cracked, the walls all have words written on them like “Whore, Bitch, etc.” then there were the drawings of the males organ and of the females chest. I was in eighth grade when I had painful words spoken to me. This was a time that a teacher called me stupid using big words thinking that I wouldn’t understand her. I didn’t get it at first. I would ask myself was it because English was not my first language, my first tongue or was it that my first language, my first tongue was so disliked by others? or was it that Spanish is my first language and it’s a hard language for a lot of people to learn or was it because I knew two languages and she only knew one was that why she talk to me in that ill manner way? Until now I didn’t get why she said those hateful words.

The words that were spoken were,  “Maria you won’t be able to do anything. You’re inept and can’t do anything. You can’t read or write. Your test grades are lower then the average. You don’t even use what we had taught you.” Those words hurt a lot the first time I heard then but not only once but twice. The first time it was said to me was around February 1:50pm. I was walking down to the nurse room with one of my best friend. The whole day was so nice. Nothing bad happened but when I got into the nurse room she was there. She was like 4.9ft in height and she looks very constipated. She was talking to the nurse when I had walking in she had said to the nurse, “I only ate half of a peanut and that was my lunch.” After I had finished at the nurse my friend and I want to the library. My homeroom teacher let us go to the library but the lady didn’t know. She came up to my friend and I. That was when those hateful words were spewed out. I was about to cry but I couldn’t show her that it hurt so much. I wasn’t about to go and give her the pleasure and the power to make me cry. So I want to the classroom and hid from everyone and started to cry. Now every time that I think of my elementary her words repeat themselves.

Some words hurt more then others, were this words “You can’t read or write.” These words were right but at the sametime wrong because I can read and I can write. I may have some trouble with grammar and with words but that doesn’t mean that I can do either. Even my English teacher said I had good Ideas but it’s just the grammar and the explanation that I need to fix.

The other set of words that hurt were, “You’re inept and can’t do anything.”  They were the words that I didn’t understand that much, but I figured it out. It was another way to say that I’m stupid and that I can’t do anything. I hate these words so much. The second time it was said to me was the next day.

Those words hurt me a lot more the second time. I had the worst last year of middle school. When she said it the second time I couldn’t hold my feelings back. I started to cry. This time I give her the power. The pain of hearing that from a teacher hurt me more then it coming from my family because I know my family is just playing around but a teacher the person that shouldn’t say those word did. From that day I started hiding my emotions from everyone and if I was sad I would have a clear expression but people didn’t know if I was sad, mad, or bored. I still do it because I’m trying to protect myself there are some people that I let near me but not so many. Those that are near me can tell the different very fast and always try to make me smile, but no mater what happens those word will never disappear from my mind, but no mater what I have people that love me and say that I’m really smart and that makes my day.

Pipeline Monologue Project.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in World History - Block on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 9:00 am

This project was about other people’s perspectives’ about the pipeline plan. My goals for this project changed a lot. I had many different ideas. I had thought about making a monologue of a kid that lives near the pipeline. Then I thought about animals, natives, and about a person that want to jail but then the idea of a newscaster came to mind. In the end I did what came to me. In the end my goals where to make the monologue what I think and others think is good.

What is new on the news and out of the newscaster world.

(Newscaster on camera he’s sitting talking about McKibben on the news.)

McKibben and about 64 other protesters started a two-week sit in at the White House on Saturday to go against the $7 billion, 1,700-mile oil pipeline planned to cross the great plains of the nations.

U.S. Park Police had told the protesters that each one of them would be arrested and quickly released with a fee of $100 for trespassing. After the Police/authorities learn that more than 2,000 people from all of the 50 states plan to join the protest from August 21, 2011 until September 3, 2011 the jailed McKibben and his peers until a court hearing on Monday.

This are comments by McKibben himself “This was a powerful day,” McKibben said in a written statement. “It’s not the easiest thing on earth for law-abiding folk to come risk arrest. It’s hot out here today, especially when you’re wearing a suit and tie. But it’s nowhere near as hot as it’s going to get if we lose this fight.”

“This pipeline has emerged as the single clear test of the president’s willingness to fight for the environment,” McKibben said in a weekend statement. “We’ve already succeeded in nationalizing this fight in a way no one thought was possible. It’s not just a group of people along the pipeline route who are opposing this project anymore. People from all 50 states will be joining us over the coming two weeks.”

After a Saturday rally at Lafayette Square Park, McKibben and other supporters move to a sit-in on the sidewalk in front of the White House. There where to large banners that read “Climate Change is Not in Our National Interest: Stop the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline” and “We Sit In Against the Keystone XL Pipeline. Obama Will You Stand Up to Big Oil?”

That is all have a good day.

(Camera’s off he gets up and walk to his dressing room.)

Again today’s news was about someone going to jail and about what hey think of this whole pipeline shit. Why won’t they just stop already having this pipeline will make more jobs and of all people I have to do this. Talk all fucking day about people that are against it and for it. I tiered of this topic. “Hey get me a water.”

What happen to me on that day.

(Siting telling people about her d grandma)

Hello my name is Kini and this stories is about my granmather. Anevay Kuwanyauma is my name and I lived in North Dakota when the pipelines where build. I was just truing eight on the day that the pipelines broke and made us move. I remember the day like it was just yesterday.  It’s more of a nightmare then a memory to me. I was with my friends laughing and singing our favorite song. After sometime we started running. This land that once my ancestor had once run through. It was a very beautiful day that my friend and I wanted to go swimming. We went to the lake that was very near when we got there we saw a dark black hole the water wasn’t there it was swallowed by the tar-sand oil. I ran back to my house told my parents the moment I ended my mom fell to her knees and unknown tear fell from her eyes. Dad’s eye turned blood red with anger. “You see our parents were right the pipes were going to brake.” But what we had not known was that all the pipelines were barking as we were talking. Then the alarm burst though our though and made our body move by it’s self. We grabbed what ever we could and my dad want and got the car. My mom grabbed my hand I dropped my favorite toy I reached for it but my mom pulled harder. Tears fell from my face the cool tear had not stop for two years. I was thinking why did we leave so fast why wouldn’t they let me pick up my toy. Now I know why. My first day back after forty years. It’s still not so safe to be here but I just wanted to see it once more the land that I cannot chare with my kid or my grandkids. So why is all I want to know why would America build a pipeline.

The story from a wolf

I had lived here in this forest for the past ten years. When I was a pup my parents where killed by poachers. I now have my own pack. When I heard that the human wanted to take more of our land, it was created. It makes me very mad if something were to happen in my territory and my pack is hurt I will not fear death. This thing they call a pipeline that they will bring from a far way place with dirty oil. They also say if this pipelines brake that the oil can kill a lot of life, and also kill our food sores. Not only that, the water that we drink will get to a point that will be undrinkable. I really don’t want this. I will attack and kill if anything happens. The human leader is another person that doesn’t care about taking our homes, and killing us off. I will never forgive the humans. My wife is now pregnant and she will soon give berth. I don’t want my pups to come to this world to learn that the humans are killing it. I remember hearing stories from my grandparent that the world was once very different. Humans use to take care of the world but now look. Why can’t the world just go back to those times then maybe my parents would be alive right now?

Unforgettable memories

By: Maria Latorre

There we were standing ready to lift off the airport. I looked back one more time to say bye to the state I was born in, “bye Venezuela.” We lifted off, the flight was long and it was so high to a person that was three feet.  It was also very fun after four hours. We had landed on a strange land that I had never seen before. There where so many people all of them were bigger then me but then I saw him I was very happy. My dad was waiting for us to get here. I was so happy but I was really tired that the moment I got in the car after walking from the ice-cold airport, I fell asleep faster than you can say I love you.

It was winter for me. Where I had come from I never felt this cold because it was nice, worm, or very hot. At the same time it was almost my birthday by the time I got to America. I got a lot of presents. One of the present was a stuffed animal named storm. She was a black stuffed dog with brown eyes. I always love animals so I was very happy to have gotten this one. A month later it was really winter and little ice-cold things stared falling from the sky, Americans call it snow. I knew that part but I never saw it fall on the main lands, I only would see it on mountains. Then Christmas came and I got more presents. I loved it.  I got so many things that I can’t name them all.

The seasons flew and it was summer. No more Ice, no more deadly cold weather, and no more heavy clothing. Now there’s nice hot air I can go swimming, but this summer was different. I played tennis that’s where I met a good and dear friend. It was really funny how we met because when we were playing she hit the ball too hard and it smacked me on the middle of my face. She ran to me and asked me if I was ok and that is how we started talking.

Now it’s time for school. I didn’t want to go I was too scared. I would ask myself, “What if the others think I’m weird because I don’t know English?” What if they hate me? I don’t want to go I want to be with my family. The moment my dad took me to school and we entered the big halls that had not a single sound and it was very dark too, I started to cry, “Papi yo no quiero estar aquí no mi dejes.”  I would say that every day until I had gotten use to school in America. I also met Mrs. Rosemary she was very nice and she would take care of me from the beginning of the day to the end of the day. My homeroom teacher was also nice to me and she would talk really slow so I could understand what she was talking about. I got used to coming to school that I forgot about the time and as a blink of and eye the school year was over.

The next school year they made me repeat because I was too young to go to first grade. The good thing about that was I meet her again, the girl that hit the ball so hard that it went flying into my face. We were always together, we became more than friends we were family. However sometime she would be hard to deal with. We would get into fights a lot. Being friends with her was like an emotional rollercoaster ride. I would always take in every single emotion she had so that she wouldn’t burst out on anyone. She would get mad a lot but I was the one that would cure her anger and I was ok with it. Another thing I would do for her is make her happy and take care of her when she’s sad. She would always come crying to me. I had become her mother, but I wasn’t only her mother I’m a mother for all of my friends too. I would act like their mother because I care for them a lot.

I’m in the second grade and we are all happy together have more fun then before. It was gym when I got into a school run. It was really fun we had to run and win the race in the end we won. That was so cool for me because I was there and helped my team to win.

Many years had past and its finally my 8th grade year. It was our last year together and we were all sad but we had a lot of fun. This year was different I was able to tell my sister (better known as my first friend) that she was hurting me a lot. Mainly emotionally because I was tired of taking her anger, which was always full force. She then said that she was very sorry and that she would try to change. After that we played a lot, went to the mall, the parks, on trips, and many other place. We are about to go to high school, graduation is tomorrow. As I was sleeping I had a dream that we would never leave but then I woke up and reality hits me in the face like an ice cold water fell from the sky.

Now I graduated from my middle school and we all want our different ways. The begging of a new school year started and I had made new friends. SLA was like another home to me it was very fun. I would always smile with my new friends. Even when we would get into a lot of fights, but the fight always ended with both side smiling happily at each other. I still had my other friend in my heart. We would meet time to time. Just so our friendship stayed together. The school year past very fast too, so soon that the next school year had already started.

I’m a sophomore its fun so far and I’m trying new things. Having friend and meeting new people is the best time for me. This school year will be very fun I just know it. All of my experiences are like a bumpy car ride but here I am, still going and really for any big bumps my car will have to go though. That makes these unforgettable memories.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:04 am
Questions:
- What is your element?
- What are some things your element are used for?
- How did you come up with the idea for your print?
- What steps did you take from your idea for the print to the final print?
- What are your thoughts on the project?
- What would you do differently if you did this project again?

Answers:
My element is called cobalt.

My element is use to make phones, parts of cars, for teeth and bullets.

My idea was that I would draw a poisonous frog and a skull and crossbones since this element is know to be poisonous this will tell them just that.

The steps I took to get to my Idea of a poisonous frog and a skull and crossbones was that at first I started to think that the it a German name means evil spirit. Then I thought about bullets but then it came to me since it is a poisonous metal I might as well make have something to do with poison.

This project was very fun we had to do a lot but I liked it a more then the other projects that we had.

What I would have do differently is that I would have thought of something more then just a
poisonous frog and a skull and crossbones I would have look into the project more and I might have fun something that I like more then what I had.

Sexual child abuse and the NAMBLA.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:54 pm
So the last time we left we where talking about Physically abuse and sexual abuse. This time we will talk about sexual and the organization NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association).

What I will talk about first is the NAMBLA organization. This organization is working on abolishing age of consent law criminalizing adult sexual contact with minors. It maybe good for somethings but I think that this is a very bad idea. Basically what they are thing to make people think is that sex with children/minors is not harmful at all.

The next one is about several different stories of sexual child abuse. This one topic is very well known world wide. There are so many stories but the ones that I will be talking about is about a girl that is now an adult but when she was little her step-father sexually abused her, the second one is about two brothers that had a good friend for sometime until that friend was sexually abuse both of them.

First story: This story is about a woman that when she was very young her step-father started sexually abusing her. It started one day when her mom was out of the house "(it always happens when she is away)" she was about ten years old, she just got into the house after playing outside. After she came in the house her "step-father" told her that he needed to check her for supposed "ticks." So she didn't think anything of it. he took her in to the bathroom, made her undress and then told her to spread her legs. He told her that he needed to check her all over; meaning her vagina. To her is felt like he was touching her for hours, "it was very horrible" She said. He just kept touching her vagina, and kept repeating that he was looking for ticks. To this day she still feels physically sick when she would thing about what he click here.
Second story: This is called " The story of Justin and Matthiew
Wilke" If you wish to read because we are out of time click here.

Child abuse and Sexually abuse cases.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 10:12 am
I had found a lot more then the first time. I learn about a daycare that was committing child abuse they would grab the kid and drag them to put them in different place. They would leave marks on the kid and they won't care until they were found out they got fried and sent to court for child abuse.

Then there is the McMartin Daycare case. The case was about a child that was sexually abused. The mother Judy Johnson didn't know that this was happening until one day when her son Matthew came home and said that his anus hurt him to have bowel movements, so his mother took him to a doctor, who declined to examine him.  On August 11, she examined Matthew in the morning and he seemed okay.  However, when he returned home from the preschool, she claimed, his anus was red and itchy. She began to perceive something more nefarious: She believed that Ray Buckey, the only male teacher at the school, was abusing her son. She kept on questioning her son to see if what she was thinking of was true. One day her son was playing doctor and giving people "injections," she asked Matthew if Ray had ever done that to him.  Again, he said no.  However, he did admit that Ray had taken his temperature, and then Judy Johnson jumped to the conclusion that this was a disguised form of sexual abuse.  Then she took Matthew to the doctors for a rectal examination. It was not only Matthew that was being abused but also every child his Ray's class.

The picture shown is Raymond Buckey or better known as Ray the daycare teacher that sexually abused kids.

Child abuse Hurts a lot!

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 8:46 am

The project I'm doing is for my 9th grade English class. The project is called "You and the world". In this project I get to talk about thing that people don't really know about. Everyone should know about a few thing that is going on around the world even if it not about them.

My issue that is happening around the world is "Child abuse". I picked this topic because it a topic that is talked about a lot but people just don't care about that much.

From the research I had found and had learned that there are many different types of child abuse like physical abuse, child sex abuse (CSA), psychological/emotional abuse, and neglect.

For a child with a history of neglect or physical abuse they have a very high risk to have psychiatric problem, or disorganized attachment. The hardest to define from is psychological/emotional abuse this kind of abuse. This type of abuse can make a child blame themselves for a that is going on around him/her, and also feel unloved.

Children that are being physically abuse are very likely to have a lot of bone fractures, and also may have high risks of getting cancer. Physically abuse could be stopped if people that see it happen would tell the cops or if the child  would go and tells. Sometime the child will not tell because they might be to scare of what would happen if he/she told someone.

Sexually abuse (CSA) is a type of child abuse in which an adult or someone older takes a kid for sexual stimulation. Types of CSA or sexual abuse  are when someone ask or pressure a child to do sexual actives, having sexual contact with a child, making a child make child pornography.

This makes me ask: Why? Why do adult or older people do this type of things to a child? Why is it that they would even think about this in the first place?

I'm looking for more information about what I was just talking about and if I can also find out about the question I have.

Sadness is upon us all but what about the kids of today and tomorrow? Is this the world I know or is it the world you made. You may be sad and in pain but what about the kids? You hurt them a lot and by many different ways. You hurt them physically and emotionally. So what about the kids? Are you going to hurt them more? So what about all of us will you stand there and not say a thing? What about US?

Child abuse can hurt. By: Maria Latorre

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 3:06 pm

For the project we had to find information about our topic and talk about it.

My issue "Child abuse" I picked this topic because it was what I which to find out more and because this topic got me to the point that it would make me sad.

I have learned so far that there are many different types of child abuse like physical abuse, child sex abuse (CSA), psychological/emotional abuse, and neglect.

For a child with a history of neglect or physical abuse they have a very high risk to have psychiatric problem, or disorganized attachment. The hardest to define from is psychological/emotional abuse this kind of abuse and end up making a child blame themselves, feel not loved.

What I want to know is why? Why do adult or older people do this type of things to a child? Why is it that they would even think about this in the first place?

I’m planning to find out more about this topic and try to find the reason why they would do this to a child and what they can get out of it.

Negative Space

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 1:35 pm
Negative space is the area around the an object. The object it's self is called the positive space because it is the part that is there on the frame. When I was cutting out the shapes, what ever was cut out was the positive space and what ever was left from the cutting was the negative space. In the stool drawing, the negative space is everything around the stool. It helps an artist to see the negative space because only the objects shape is standing out. It enhances the shape of an object.

My Perspective Drawing Of Art Room By Maria Latorre.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 1:50 pm
The first thing we did was start of with a blank page and tried to find the different perspectives. One from a bird eye to a worms eye view. We practiced this method over and over. Then we got started in the Art Room perspective. The first thing I did was count the number of box looking this that where around the lights. Then I drew it and when it was done I started on the left part of the room. The pillar in the far left was the second thing that I drew it was easy at first then I had to add all the other part. Then came the windows it was really easy but when I finished it I had to draw the blinds. Then I drew the front wall it was just the windows and the blinds with two other drawings. Then I finished the left wall and started on the right wall. It was harder because I had to draw a couch, a door, other drawings, tables, and the board. The last thing I did was the two tables in the middle of the room.

The easiest parts of the perspective drawing was when I drew the windows and the tables.

The hardiest parts of the perspective drawing was the couch, the other drawings, and the pillars.

Tamatha Lancaster: Her draw was really interesting to me and well made. It looks like she took her time to draw it. Also it  looks like she put a lot of though in to it too. If I didn't see this room before and saw her picture and then I saw the room. Then I would think that this and the room that was draw look just the same.
