Anthony Buchanico's Capstone

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in Capstone - Kay - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:05 pm
It's been around 6 years since I've started playing the guitar. In that tem I finished grade school, went through high school and have matured in so many ways. I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't began playing the guitar I doubt I'd be half the man I am today. Throughout my guitar playing career I had a ton of support from friends and family telling me that I was doing great and that I was very talented. To be honest I never really believed them. When I did though it really helped me to become such a more confident and headstrong individual. I wanted to share that feeling with everybody through my knowledge and interest in music by making a booklet teaching others. I know that a lot of aspiring musicians often get discouraged when they hear a lot of different things about theory and music notation. I aimed to make my capstone simple to understand so that those beginners can get started on the right foot.

I started off with the basics of music theory, as well as how to tune a guitar and what common terms mean that musicians might here a lot. From there I went on to explain the different types of chords and how to read a tab. From there I talked about what songs to play and what would help people with their music career. I made sure to provide dozens of example songs of all difficulties to make sure anybody can try some songs from the booklet. I know that my booklet won't be able to teach everyone, but hopefully those that it can teach, it does them well.

Key Resources/Bibliography:

Comunity. "Guitar Lessons @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com." Guitar Lessons @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com. Ultimate-Guitar,Web.

The Ultimate-Guitar community is a vast one filled with hundreds of guitar players of various skill levels.  These guitarists speak together on a forum and share their tabs with one another for the benefit of the world. Ultimate Guitar also has a lessons section where anybody can upload a lesson on whatever they please. I’ve used this to my benefit by taking pieces of different lessons and incorporating them into my own booklet.

Guitar Tab Creator. Computer software. Welcome to Guitar Tab Creator Help Section. Guitartabcreator, Web.

A big part of teaching guitar is giving a way to read music. Tablature is debatably the easiest way to teach guitar without going too in depth about music theory. Making these tabs can be extremely tedious, but thanks to guitar tab creator the pain of making a tab has been reduced by a great amount. I used this a lot so far in making lessons and plan on using this for the rest of it since it’s such a great tool.

Abe’s Book.

Musselman, Abe. A Brief Introduction to Guitar. 1st ed. Vol. 1: Self, Print.

Abe Musselman’s book on teaching guitar was very similar to what I did for mine. I was able to go through his capstone and get a decent understanding of what I can do to make it better. Abe also had a ton of good examples and sources to use. I got the guitar tab creator from this capstone, as well as several terrific song examples that I could implement in my project. It’s also nice to have a source that isn’t a website, especially since I can speak to this person personally.

Hess, Tom. "How To Teach Beginner Guitar." How To Teach Beginner Guitar. Tom Hess Music Corporation, Web.

I need to know HOW to teach guitar to people before I can actually go about doing it in a lengthy way. Tom Hess has managed to put some good lessons and tips into this website which allows me to take a step in the right direction with writing my book.  This website also talks about common mistakes, which is very helpful for me!

Savage, Nate. "Intermediate Guitar Lessons." » Guitar Lessons -. Guitarlessons, Web.

This is a good website for choosing different parts of my intermediate section. It has such a large amount of things in it that I can use it’s amazing. It’s kind of like a tutorial on my own capstone in itself.

Cross, Dan. "Learning Guitar - Lesson One - Learning About the Parts of a Guitar."Learning Guitar - Lesson One - Learning About the Parts of a Guitar. About.com, Web.

I figured that it’d be very smart if I taught the people who are reading the book the different parts of the instrument, which they are playing. I also wanted to use the image on the site to show how the guitar is laid out.

Farris, Brandon. "Intermediate Guitar Songs." Intermediate Guitar Songs. FULL-SCORE-GUITAR-LESSONS, Web.

Having songs in my capstone is very important. They provide a terrific reference of real world application with what you’ve been learning. This website is terrific since it gives me dozens of songs at different skill levels! I can use some of these songs in my capstone, and I can also use them to think of other songs.

Wimer, Kevin. "Choosing a Guitar: Acoustic vs Electric." JamPlay.com. JamPlay, 24 Feb. 2007. Web.

An extremely important part of my capstone is separating the different guitars. These being acoustic and electric. Based on what you want to know about guitar you can read the different parts of my book to learn about which type of guitar you want to play.

Crow, Klaus. "16 Legendary Fingerpicking Patterns." Guitarhabits.com. WordPress, 16 Nov. 2010. Web.

In terms of acoustic guitar, finger picking is extremely important. A lot of professional acoustic guitarists are very dependant on it. It manages to keep a very fast sound, while at the same time sounding very nice and melodic. I figured that this would be an extremely important thing to put in to the acoustic portion of my capstone since it’s practically required making any progress in playing.

G, Peter. "Choosing a Guitar Playing Style." Learn to Play Music. Learn to Play Music, 2014. Web.

As with my last source, this site allows to teach several different aspects of playing guitar playing such as finger picking.  This one also teaches rhythm and lead guitar though!  These also can be relevant for teaching acoustic guitar, but it’s also extremely helpful for electric guitar, which you can find a lead/rhythm trade in almost any two-guitar band!

I don't really take a lot of serious pictures. The majority of my pictures are just jokes in one way or another. For instance, one of the images are of me writing this assignment right now while I'm extremely tired. The other picture is me with all of the low quality cleaning products I got for Christmas. The other picture takes place in Mr.Blocks class where I had pants on my head for some strange reason. What you can see in the image is what I'm doing, how I appear to feel and what is going on in the background. What isn't visible however is the story behind each picture. No matter how goofy an image may be there is always at least one sentence behind why it was taken.

Process Paper, Anthony Buchanico

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 6:40 pm

  Process Paper

At the start, Korah, Michael, Tsion and I all had a pretty clear understanding of what was to be accomplished by each person and when we really cared that we had it done by. We hadn’t really strayed too far off task from the main point and showed this by checking up every now and then. Overall I feel as though our group is doing a fair enough job with getting the project done while understanding the limitations and priorities of one-another. A good example of this was the concern with other benchmarks going on at the time. Michael and Korah both have their pre-calculus benchmarks to work on and it was a lot of work for them, so it was better and easier to just let them work on their bits when they could rather than forcing them to abandon their math benchmarks.

This project isn’t difficult in terms of tasks and work. The only real things that make it difficult are the tedious tasks of getting physically involved with your subject and making due with what restrictions you have. For instance, the first goal that our group had in mind was the idea to use birdhouses to represent how one broken birdhouse can ruin the others as a whole. Sadly, our group figured out that birdhouses cost a fair amount of money and that if we wanted to complete this project we would have to dish out about $60 in supplies, which nobody in our group was capable or willing to do. With that we quickly stopped thinking about that aspect of the project and went on with what we were doing. We tried thinking of several ways to replace the birdhouse idea and came close to it, but overall we couldn’t think of something that we were as happy with when we had the bird house.

1.) Buchanico, C. (2013). Interview on neighborhood quality.

This source was the interview that I had with my mother. In this interview we covered various points about how she’s seen that the neighborhood has changed over the course of her 15 years living here. Seeing as she stays in the neighborhood much more than my father, I asked her about how the house has stood the test of time and if she’s seen any significant changes in the housing and town quality over the course of this time period. She told me that the changes that she saw weren’t anything too big, but the water systems in the houses had been falling apart, and that the only thing that had happened to the houses were some slightly bad things such as small cracks and some inside parts of the house such as minor water damage in certain portions of the house.

2.) Buchanico, A. (2013). Interview on street condition.

This was the interview that I had with my dad. I realized that since my dad travels about more, he could be able to tell me how Philadelphia was in comparison to other neighborhoods. He also is a police officer so e gets a lot of driving done. I used this to my advantage to see about the street conditions and tell me about the changes and transitions between neighborhoods and how the neighborhoods look. He began telling me about how as he’s been driving more, he doesn’t really see back roads and actual neighborhood streets being repaired too commonly. He told me that the transitions to some neighborhoods are subtle, but some are pretty big, going from small broken down houses to grand houses tat have been around for hundred of years. He says that he thinks it has to do with the people living in those areas.

3.) Money, Kate. "Is Philadelphia the new Brooklyn."brokelyn. N.p.. Web. 16 Feb 2013. <http://brokelyn.com/brooklyn-vs-philadelphia/>.

This link is discussing how Philadelphia is a cheaper Brooklyn, and states the pluses and downsides about moving to Philadelphia after being in Manhattan. Although a good portion of this isn’t obviously relevant, it does show some good points. 1 being that the monthly cost to live in Philly is significantly cheaper than many other places. You also cannot find a job here, as the unemployment rate is sadly large. Another semi-relevant has to do with the section known, as “you are more likely to get murdered in Philly.” Murder and other serious crimes can be a good cause of neglect in a neighborhood. These can spark signal crimes such as tagging and doing damage to windows and other parts of housing. One of these happening at a time may not seem like a big deal as the window can just be fixed. However, if these are to constantly happen, then some things just won’t be stopped so soon.

4.) . "Neighborhood Transformation Initiative." GoogleDocs. Neighborhood Transformation Initiative. Web. 16 Feb 2013. <https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.phila.gov/ohcd/conplan31/strategy.pdf>.

This link is a Google doc by the neighborhood transformation initiative. It states part of what we are saying which is that the state of Philadelphia’s housing was and still is in decline. Low-income communities contribute to inability for repair in these neighborhoods. The main point of this document seems like it’s talking about using a planning idea for the most part. Which isn’t exactly largely helpful in discussing our point, but if we were to discuss the solution at this point it is without a doubt necessary to have planning included in your steps, as it’s necessary for basically any process of recovery.

The broken window theory is a story that states signal crimes and other small factors contribute to the decline of a civilization. And it also discusses how to at least give off a better and safer look for a town. This article specifically describes New Jersey’s attempt at a nice neighborhood program by stationing foot patrol units all around the town to give people the feeling of safety and hopefully helping to lower the crime rate. While the cops did not like this, as it was more difficult to get around and signal other police due to lack of transportation and technology in the car, people felt safer. Crime rates didn’t change, but due to something known as order-maintenance, people were able to feel like they were being cared for much more.

Teige Dougherty & Anthony Buchanico's "Electric" Guitar

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in Physics - Echols on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 9:51 pm
We chose to use a guitar for many reasons. One reason is that we are both musically inclined and have been for most of our lives. For many musicians music actually lights up when they hear and play it. When we see the guitar and we play it, it is very similar to electricity. We are the power source that lights up the music coming out our own instrument. The light is a metaphor for the feeling we get from interacting with our instruments. It starts to become part of you and you can’t shake it no matter how hard you try. So we decided to turn metaphorical lighting into a literal expression with this guitar! With each fret pressed down with an inlay on it, a light shines to show that metaphorical light that we see as musicians. This Acoustic guitar is now a glimmering "electric" guitar.

Language Autobiography

REFLECTION:

For the longest time I wasn’t sure what to write about. I don’t come from a family straight out of a foreign country. And I’m not  “Off the Boat” Italian as some others are. I’m just me, Anthony. So I thought about it quite a bit before I finally thought to myself that I do have some dialectic things in my life. My grandparents say things, my friends say things and even I say things. So I just decided to write those occurrences into this paper that you see here.

Overall I slightly enjoyed writing this paper. With everything there would of course be other topics that would be more fun to write about. But this wasn’t a bad topic whatsoever. I enjoyed getting to look at past things in my family that reminded me of the funny and unique ways which they speak!

LANGUAGE, By: Anthony Buchanico

I will never fully understand the way people go against one another for speaking differently, even when it’s in the same language. To be speaking different languages is one thing, I mean you can’t understand the person, but there’s no reason to bother others for sounding differently.

Here in Philadelphia, we have several different ways of saying things. These can include the way we pronounce bagel (Beg-gull), water (wooder) and some other words as well. We’ve even made up a cluster of words such as jawn, jawnski and yous to name a few. Basically jawn is a way to say thing when at a loss for words while yous is a hybrid/contraction for saying you guys and you girls. Somebody use these constantly and love using it while others don’t bother using them whatsoever. Personally, I find myself using yous a lot but refraining from using jawn as some consider it to be improper.

I don’t exactly see how words can be improper. I mean I understand how some people associate poor grammar with poor working. Some people can be told entirely from their speech. The person who seemingly can’t structure a sentence is more than likely differently clothed than somebody using complex words in a casual conversation. This doesn’t necessarily meant that the person is incapable of doing the actions of the proper speaker granted it isn’t a public speaker in most cases.

I had a friend in grade school, his name was John. We were always good friends even though we were different in several aspects we managed to be great friends and get along in most cases. Out of everything we’ve done the most memorable would probably be our routine after vocal assignments. Time and time again we would get up there in front of our uninterested class of 24, scuttling up to talk about how the weather is changing or the history of pancakes. Each time, we would say almost a synonymous speech with only replacing a few words. I’ve always been a proper speaker save for how fast I talk in some cases while he tended to abbreviate his words and use words that we swear were made up. And each time I would laugh at the response on his face when his grades were 5 points lower than mine for no reason. Half of the time he’d be given the better-worded speech too!

Although even with this proof I guess the wrong idea is being presented. People shouldn’t be afraid or ashamed to use their own way of speaking, or “dialects” if you may. Some are just treated differently than others. More than likely you have others around you that speak as you do. I mean people need to learn form somewhere or else we wouldn’t know anything. If I were to say something common to me in school, it’s almost assured that nobody in the room would understand what I’m saying. A perfect example of this would be my grandparents. We say our own plethora of words being together as a family. The most predominant however would have to be Marone, which is basically considered to be a burden or a quarrelsome statement. The next one is called a gavone. A gavone is considered to be a pig and a glut in several instances. Here’s an example of just that

Trips to my grandparent’s house are always fun. My grandmother, or Mommom as we call her, is always so fun and the most amazing cook. And my grandfather, or Poppy, is one of the coolest people to me. Going to their house is always another venture in itself! We always go together as a family, so their house always has my family, my aunts and my uncles, my cousins, and until recently, my great grandmothers. As with so many Italians getting together, we always get into some minor bickering and fun quarrels.

“Well what do you mean we can’t go to the Christmas party this year?” “I already told you why! I don’t work with them anymore!” “So? What’s the problem?” “Marone, what’s the matter with you?” These are most of the arguments between my Aunt Monica and my Poppy. We manage to get into arguments over everything and it’s hilarious every time. I remember last Christmas Eve when we went to my grandparent’s house for our annual holiday tradition. We always eat so much more than we’re supposed to and wind up making somebody starve to death because we’re such “gavones” as my family says. And we are. “Here you go, the last pizza guys!” My Mommom said twice with a grin on her face. I never got how she could be so happy in making countless pizzas on Christmas Eve. “Hey guys we’re finally here!” My Aunt Joanna said while her and my newest Uncle Mick walk in from the blistering cold. “Oh good just in time for the last of the pizzas,” replied my Mommom still happy. “What pizza…?” replied my Uncle, clueless as ever. My Mommom quickly looked down at the table to see nothing left. “You guys are such gavones!” she sparked at us after devouring all the pizza. It was worth it though.

There are several examples in the world where dialects are found. Everywhere in the world actually. Your dialect shows just that. It tells you everything from where you’re from to whom you hang out with throughout your life. Don’t be ashamed of what you have, but be happy about your own life and where you’ve come from to this point.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Anthony Buchanico on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Opening Paragraph: For my monologues I focused on being against the Keystone XL pipeline. It reflects my views on it from people around the U.S. and one from the middle east. For my first monologue I made a future situation of the pipeline breaking in Nebraska to a drastic level. He was moved to Manhattan and talks from the back staircase of his apartment building. (Hence why the video is in the back staircase.) For monologue number 2 I had a middle eastern man describing how he is disappointed with the U.S. Government being greedy with the oil and not sticking with the promise of helping the whole world. He believes with sharing and industrialization of his towns that they will thrive. For the final person I had a normal man who is about to get a job with the Keystone XL building. After much thought he slowly shows a change of heart.

Monologues:

History POV

Block, Iron

September 24th, 2011

                                                            The Nebraskan View

(Sitting on Fire Escape of Apartment, slight vocal tension) I just cannot believe this has happened, and that I was there to witness it. It’s been two years but it feels just like yesterday, it was bad enough they had to close down the hills and move all of the people and animals, but I still can’t believe they forced me to move, and why in the world did I comply? Maybe this will teach them not to cut corners and betray Mother Nature like that again though now that we have half a state evacuated just because they were to lazy and cheap to think of an alternate way. If it wasn’t for them I could still be my happy old Nebraskan born citizen as I was. But no, I am now forced to live over hear in New York with a bunch of my other Nebraskan citizens. I hate it hear! It smells, everybody is so rude, the streets are so cramped and I barely have time to talk to anybody. I miss my warm Nebraskan home; I miss my old neighborhood with all of the ones I love. I miss this smell and the fresh air and the familiar landscape. Too bad wishing won’t do me any good. I might as well keep trying to make the best out of what’s here, even though it isn’t all that much. It has been two years since the Keystone XL Spill, and America has taken a turn for the worse. I am a former Nebraskan citizen, and I want my Country back.

TWO

                                    The World Needs A Hero

(Pacing Back and Forth rapidly, annoyance notable.)Why is America so screwed up? They say they want to help the world but what about us? I am a typical Middle Eastern citizen and has America forgotten about all of their help the world “promises” They aren’t even listening to their people over there. So many people over there don’t want it. The government says it’s completely safe and nothing will happen but they know they’re just lying so they don’t have to stop what they’re doing. The people don’t even seem to want the oil; they want something new for their world. They have the right idea. Too bad we don’t have as many choices over here. We would love to have the options that they have, hell we would love to have some oil. But no, America has to be greedy and take the oil straight from Canada with a largely oversized pipe that will wreck the land and destroy the few natural beauties found within the once marvelous Country known as the U.S.A. It would be a real shame to see this go through and the moment when the pipe breaks. The terror will be immeasurable.

THREE

                                                A Job on the Pipe

(While watching T.V. on the couch) Well, tomorrow’s the big day! I finally start my job of building the Keystone XL pipeline. I wonder what it’s going to be like? Nobody ever told me about what working there will be like, all I know is having some money, a job and getting all the cheap oil is going to be a godsend for my wife and I. we can sell some of the oil too! That is guaranteed to help get us out of debt. I can’t wait for this to start; I can feel the paychecks rolling in now. These people moaning and complaining about it though are getting on my nerves. So what if there’s an oil leak? We can just suck it back up with a truck, it’s just oil. If those nuts would just get on the winning side we could all work together and make this pipeline even better! They need to stop worrying, the president knows what to do, and we’re America! We have all the resources and power we need, right? Nothing to worry about, no problems at all. (Stand at this point)  Oh whom am I kidding this pipeline is terrible. My wife warned me of this. It’ll probably destroy my lungs as well. I have to be in at 5 a.m. every single morning and work until 9 o clock every freaking night! This isn’t worth it, what the hell am I getting myself into. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’ll find another way.

Descriptive Essay: A Guitarist's Passion

A Guitarist's Passion

They say everybody in life has a passion. And if you don’t you simply haven’t found it yet. For those that haven’t, I highly suggest going on a venture to find it for the betterment of your life. My passion has been guitar for quite a while, and even though I’m not the best at it, I continue to aim higher and higher as my practice continues. And if you haven’t found a passion yet, well maybe guitar can be yours as well!

Having a passion can help in a number of ways. In my case, it not only gives me something to do, but something to strive to be better at as well as relieve stress, and get away from daily life. The possibilities of what you can learn or create are practically endless and show no signs of dwindling. Of course, it’s not always so simple finding something one could love to such an intense amount.

The first time I had picked up a guitar was when I was 8 years of age. After listening more and more guitar in the world my interest sprouted enough for me to walk up to my parents and say, “Mom, Dad, I want to play the guitar!” They liked the idea of me taking an interest in music, so within the week my dad took me to the only small music shop around the neighborhood and there I purchased my first and only acoustic guitar so far, A Jasmine, by the name Takamine.  It was a cheap guitar, brown body, black pick guard and lining, and an illustrious fret board. Of course back then I didn’t understand much about what makes a good guitar just that, but I didn’t care I finally had a guitar!

I Started playing more and more through the days I had it, but no matter how much I practiced I just wasn’t getting anywhere with playing. After realizing this, my parents decided it was time for me to get some guitar lessons. With a quick search we found a local teacher who would hopefully show me where to go. Of course being a young kid around the time, I had no patience and just wanted to start rocking out riffs left and right. Sadly it wasn’t that simple. Contradicting my previous statement, I had an idea of what I wanted to learn, but as with many things, they never go as planned. My teacher was a very “classical” type of teacher. She stuck to the simple form of learning jingle bells and spending a month and a half on the G note. After about 3 months I looked at my past lessons and it hit me  “What am I doing?”  “This isn’t what I wanted at all.”

After some discussion, I left her teachings and slowly faded away from guitar. I thought I was done with it; after all it was just some old hobby I picked up. So I put my jasmine down in the corner to collect dust for the next couple of years. I thought I was done, the end of just another short chapter in the book of life. But just like a book, you never know what’s on the next page until your there.

I was 12 and like most twelve year olds all the days were boring and repetitive; Video Games, food and the Internet. I badly needed a hobby, my parents agreed.

“Hmm, what do we have around this house? I need something good.”

I thought to myself with no idea about what to do. Just then I started hearing piano. It was my sister playing again; she’s an amazing pianist! It seems so easy for her.

And then it hit me, I had an instrument, granted that instrument was now a pile of dust in my room it was an instrument. So I hoped up and waltz my way up to the familiar blue and orange walled safe zone I called a bedroom. I looked at the guitar and with a smile on my face thought, “Let’s try this again.”

From then on out I slowly started getting back into it; I practiced more and more, this time progress slightly quicker than last time. Now I was twelve and about to be 13, a teenager! My birthday was coming up and I knew exactly what I wanted, my first electric guitar. So my birthday came, and I got what I wanted, well almost anyway. Being a young kid I assumed I’d be able to just waltz right in and pick out the nearest multi-thousand dollar guitar. I wound up settling for a beginners pack, I was a beginner after all.

Months went by and even though the guitar wasn’t the nicest sounding it got me by. After a while I had the desire to save for a better guitar. Luckily for me I had a little friend named Christmas coming up. I’ll never forget that Christmas morning when I awoke to find a guitar under the Christmas tree. On the cold and silence of the Christmas Eve night my family and I drove home from South Philadelphia after the annual visit and dinner with my grandparents and the rest of our grand family. As we were driving home on the endless road I could sense the thoughts in the air and interest of what my two younger brothers, my older sister and my self would all receive for the amazing holiday of Christmas. About 45 minutes form departure; we finally arrived to the familiar haven we all call home. After the usual tradition of exchanging gifts between the families we all headed off to our rooms ready as ever to receive gifts and everything on the side. No matter how bad of a sleeper I am, Christmas always manages to be the exception with me quickly falling asleep like a sound child each and every time. My eyes shut, and in the feeling of a blink I was back up with 2 familiar faces in my vision.

            “Wake up Ant!”
                        “Santa Came!”

In the early morning confusion, I almost had forgotten what day it was. It was Christmas of course! As my brother and I anxiously stood at the top of the stairs Stephen, my younger brother, went to wake my parents up on this 7 am Christmas morning. As my sister comes rumbling out of bed it becomes apparent she cares more about sleep than gifts at this moment. So we let her go for later. Right after, my parents come shuffling out of their room just as ready to go downstairs as we were. Halfway down the stairs I looked over, and there it was. A black Les Paul waiting for me. Without even as much as giving the other gifts a glance I scurried to it ecstatic as anyone could imagine. And with each day of the month passing by, I could feel myself growing closer to this Black Les Paul. Now it is the only thing I use more than my computer!

To this day guitar is still in my life every moment. There hasn’t been a single day where I have been ashamed or regretful of my choice as a passion. Although it may have seemed like rambling it was to show how much passion can take over your life and make you a better person. If there were one thing to do, it would be to implore a passion into your life someday. You won’t regret it!

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 9:14 am
1.) My element is Boron.
2.) It is used in things such as fiberglass insulation as well as a containment or nuclear rods. These are the primary uses

3.) I had realized that boron can create a green flame and is also kept in capsule like I had drawn. Therefore placing a bunch of capsules falling into green fire with the atomic number and name seemed like a cool idea.

4.) I tried to make the fire as detailed as I could and based it off of an image I had found. For the capsules I used a basic pill shape.

5.) It's alright. I think that the picture already shown o the periodic table we had seen looked much better in comparison.

6.) If I could do this project over,  I would focus more on making the pills detailed. I might actually not have put the pills in but kept the fire without a doubt.

Portfolio - Journals

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:55 pm
Over the year, we began to write in our journals periodically throughout the year.  As much as I love expressing my feelings, I don't really like doing it through writing. Nonetheless, here are 4 fresh journals from the year!
Feb. 17th, 2011.

Um, An impossible task that I’m usually faced with is completing a giant assignment at 2 am during the end of summer because I never do my work right when I get it. I’m not exactly alone though since half of the grade is up messaging each other asking how the heck they’re going to complete it in 3 hours. Somehow we all manage to finish and get a passing grade though we normally help each other on the questions to get it done as fast as we can. I’ll never learn to get my work done…

OH WELL, I’m passing.

Feb. 2nd 2011

A hero in my opinion doesn’t need to be able to fly, or melt things with their awesomeness. They are just somebody who has exceptional qualities and strong emotions. Somebody with an enormous amount of intelligence is just as much a hero as somebody with no fears.  Sure Superman and all are great but the chances of somebody who can fly around and save the day dressed in tight clothes are kind of small. Chuck Norris is obviously an exception, as he does possess the powers listed in the beginning of this article and many more of course.

January 20, 2011.

1.)  My advisor mister chase is an excellent storyteller.  He once rambled on about bees or something for a good 10 minutes. Making it up as he went along. It was pretty cool.

2.)  I really enjoy reading story’s about survival in the wilderness. My favorite book has been brains winter since I read it in the 6th grade. I’ve read it several times. I would love to read stories like this more often but can never find one that catches my attention. Hopefully I’ll find one soon.

January 24, 2011

1.)  To me, being an adult is nothing more than being at least 21. Although, ACTING like a 21 year old is something a lot of people need to learn. If you abuse your children or commit constant felonies you aren’t an adult, just a fully developed buffoon.  You know you’re finished when you have all privileges, aside from the senior citizen discounts.

Portfolio - Independent Reading

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:37 pm
My favorite type of reading is a man verse nature scenario. Nothing is more exciting than a person or people lost in an unfamiliar environment. Into thin air is a great example of these type of stories with a thrilling expedition to the famed Mount Everest!

                                       Into Thin Air

              By: Jon Krakauer

Into thin air, this compassionate story of survival brings you into a benumbing scenario with almost no hope of living through a living nightmare. Option calls it “A searing book” while Elle states “Into Thin Air is being billed as ‘one of the most memorable adventure sagas of all time,’ and is likely to earn that accolade . . . Krakauer makes one excellent decision after another about how to tell it.” Being a New York Times best seller, this book is not one to be overlooked and is a great investment of time.

Jon Krakauer is an ordinary man who is tasked with the job of describing the commercialism on Mount Everest. Jon thinks to him self “What better way to do this then climb the mountain myself?” So that he does. Before climbing up the mountain however, he realizes it’s not an easy task so he joins the climbing industry with the name of Adventure Consultants who assigns him a group of hiker companions as well as a leader under the name of Robert Hall.

Throughout the trip Jon begins writing down his experience, hoping to be able to share the experience after. As the hikers and he gain altitude, they begin to succumb to the wide array of effects that come with hiking such as weight lose, sickness, and drowsiness. From the inexperienced hikers to the veterans, all people begin slowly bringing themselves to their unaware endings that will soon befall them.

The turning point in the story is when Robert signals for a turning point in the trip. For those unaware, turning point is a given time where everyone must head back to their campground to risk death. In this case it is 2:00pm. As the hike returning down ensues. Several members of the trip die from blizzards and oxygen depletion in the unforgiving terrain. Miraculously, Jon survives.

Without a doubt, the most heart grabbing character in this story would have to be Robert. This is for the sole reason of his skills of a leader. In one instance he risks his life to save others from a terrifying blizzard that had come over the mountain.

I feel as though people could learn the importance of teamwork and good planning, as well as never expect the best luck. I doubt any of the hikers anticipated there hike going to hell in such a high degree, but with teamwork, some managed to overcome nature.

I can wholeheartedly say that this is one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. My favorite form of reading is a man verses nature type theme, and the fact that this actually happened to people fueled my excitement even more.  Although there were some flaws with the book grabbing my attention, the most notable of course being that for a while in the beginning I was bored out of my mind. being there wasn’t much of my interest. I liked that it strengthened itself content wise greatly during the middle and ended very strong.

Being a real experience to somebody, changing something would drastically alter the storyline as everything affects it in some way. It would be rather entertaining to put this in a desert scenario though. Rather than a blizzard it would be a sandstorm, or perhaps dehydration replacing reduced oxygen levels.

I don’t find myself relating to any characters in this book. I have never leaded any organization nor have I been put in a near death scenario. I obviously have not ever died as well.

I’m sure some of the survivors left to die felt alone, scared and like they had no God or master looking over them. I’ve felt this way in some cases, although not in their scenario. Overall, I could relate to this book in very few ways. I just do not find myself relating to a situation where the temperature is far below freezing in a blizzard and I have no means of survival.

I would say anybody who enjoys a great story about survival through teamwork as well as luck, or just anybody looking for a great booking renowned for its content.

Seeing as I loved Macbeth so much, I decided that I would make rhymes about it for a project. This was one of the suggestions that I based it off of. My actual project below is a mixture of music, keynote and rhyme. Enjoy!

Portfolio - Odysseus Compare and Contrast

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:22 pm
Star Wars has always been one of my favorite movie sagas. It's a lengthy tale of love and trust spread out over years. This reminded me closely to The Odyssey. So for my Q3 Benchmark I decided to compare these two epic journeys.

Anthony Buchanico

Orange Stream

English, March 6th 2011

In the eyes of several, Odysseus can relate to almost any fictional character ever made due to the major influence his story has had on modern day media. One of the most significant instances of this would be the Star Wars prequels. Although different in several ways, the tale of Odysseus can closely be related to Anakin Skywalker and his struggle for sanity due to his loved one.

The story of Odysseus starts off with a foresight to the end of the journey where he has been stranded on a land away from all he loves and only one person to care for him due to his carelessness.  Similarly, if we go to the end of Anakin’s journey he is stranded alone in his own landmass of a prison with only one man to care for him.  This can be thought of as the first notable similarity. It shows both the character’s poor judgment in teamwork and desire to save their lover has been their downfall. Going back to the beginning of Odysseus’ journey, he must gather men to help him save his loved one from harm without them exactly knowing what his intentions were.  Likewise, in episode two of Anakin’s journey, he finds his loved one and himself facing certain danger. With the use of his crew known as the Jedi, he manages to save his loved one, and himself. This states another ground point. Although these occurrences are not in similar order, they can still be thought of as similar purposes. This occurrence in Anakin’s life can also be thought to pertain to Odysseus and his crew facing Circes, seeing as it was a wicked beast that tears apart people and Anakin was faced against a set of beasts himself.

These journeys, no matter how similar, are still “A long time ago” and “A galaxy far far” apart.  For one, the Star Wars trilogy is scientifically ions ahead of Ancient Greek civilization seeing as they use terminating lasers, aircrafts and many more futuristic inventions. The stories, no matter how similar in plot cannot be an exact copy of the other. If they were to do so it’d more likely be called “The Odyssey: Episodes 1-9!” Another thing that can be associated in plot differences it that the challenges and humans they face are different people of consisting of difference race and sex, Obi-Wan is Anakin’s Athena and Padme is the Penelope of the time.

Moving back into similarities, looking at “Star Wars: Episode III, Revenge of the Sith,” we find Anakin losing his sanity in order to keep the one he loves and the mindset he believes in an everlasting reality. He was so set on this that he betrayed those who he had once loved all for one woman. Sound familiar? Odysseus sacrificed all he had close to him in order to save Penelope from the suitors. Even after 10 years he still sacrificed his life and slaughtered mass amounts of people just to be with the one he aspired to hold close to him. Their love had blinded the both of them and drove them to the walls of insanity. In the category of both a similarity and difference lies the child of Odysseus, Telemachus, where is he found in the Star Wars saga? In one perspective, Telemachus may be thought of as the force. It was always a part of Anakin’s life just as Telemachus was to Odysseus. Neither of them had noticed it for quite sometime however. But in the end, it helps them both reach their final goal. Another way to think of the force is to recognize the Goddess Athena.

Athena was always a divine power Odysseus had that could help him during his harshest times. When Odysseus and his son were fighting off the suitors in their home Athena was there for the protection of Odysseus. She’d always offer Odysseus a wiser option to the situation. Anakin also had that ability, to use the force to help him out of a difficult situation. There are also other Gods that stood in Odysseus’ way, just as their were other sith that would obstruct Anakin’s journey.

So, as stated previously, love blinded these individuals and drove them to the ends of the Earth to save the ones they desire. They betrayed everything they held dear and suffered immense hardships just to be close to the one that they wanted.

The first notable thing I had done in the year in my opinion was my Macbeth benchmark. Macbeth is an amazing tale of greed and it's recommended for everyone. In this project we had to trace a character throughout the book and note how their behavior had changed over time.

Macbeth Creative Writing

Anthony Buchanico

In the story of Macbeth, Macbeth had gone from such a bold and noble man with no sense of violence except those against his loved ones, yet when he heard of his chance to be king he slowly fell under the lust for power and began his journey consisting of slaughtering anybody in his way.  This can be shown throughout the story in his words as well as the words of others.

In Act 1 scene 3 Banquo and Macbeth have come to contact with the witches and are discussing the prophecies told to them. Macbeth has been said to become king while Banquo has been told his children shall inherit the throne afterward. While in discussion whether this prophecy may be true Banquo states, “If you can look into the seeds of time, and say which grain will grow, and which will not.” To see which grain will grow and which will not is to take note of whose future will flourish and whose will come to an end.

Act 1 scene 5; Macbeth is in deep thought over the plan to end the life of the King. To end the life of someone he considers a friend is just too much for him to simply go about doing, but he would do almost anything for the power of king as well as make his wife happy.  So while in a soliloquy, Macbeth cries “Stars, hide your fires!

Let not light see my black and deep desires.” In short, Macbeth doesn’t wish for such controversy over being king, but doesn’t want to admit he will eventually fall to his lust for power.

For Act 1, scene 7 the majority of Macbeth’s time is spent arguing with his wife over the deed to end Duncan. Macbeth is taking the side of finding another way to go about obtaining kingship while his wife wants the deed done immediately and to the fullest extent. She accuses Macbeth of being everything under a man and the only way to bring his masculinity back he would need to murder someone with a familiar face.  As a response, he replies with “I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more, is none.” He’s saying manhood cannot be judged by taken lives. And this would turn him to a beast rather a man.

The remainder of Act 1, scene 7 is spent discussing the way to rid of the king. Lady Macbeth’s influence had finally hit Macbeth. Rather then take his task with confidence like on the battlefield; he is extremely timid at the thought of the murder. For words of confidence, Lady Macbeth responds with “Screw your courage to the sticking-place.” Saying this had told Macbeth to center his courage before taking the task. This gave him the confidence shown on the battlefield to apply to the murder of Duncan.

After the dawning of the day Duncan’s death is discover, Act 2 scene 3 is spent detailing the conversation with the ones close to the king such as Macbeth and Macduff. Although most are unsuspecting, Donalbain had sensed guilt among the crowd. “There's daggers in men's smiles.” Is said by him when he suddenly feels a large amount of guilt in the crowd. He senses one man had done this. That Macbeth did the deed is not apparent however.

Act 3, scene 4 begins to show the ruthless man Macbeth is becoming. He begins to find out Banquo knows Macbeth completed the death of Duncan. As a result he begins to contemplate yet another murder to keep his secret safe. He begins to enter another soliloquy. This time he states “I am in blood Stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er.” Saying this shows Macbeth knows he has to murder again, he doesn’t think of it as such a crime though. He’s done it once he’ll do it again. The only difference now is his hired assassins shall do the deed.

Act 4, scene 2 Lady Macbeth has had a growing regret over the murder since the deed was committed. She is slowly falling apart. Macbeth realizes this and tries to assure her the problem is over and nothing bad will come from this anymore. She is still rather doubtful about it no matter what he says. She realizes they are traitors no matter what. “When our actions do not, our fears do make us traitors.” This shows just that.

Macbeth has been a horrible king. His citizens are afraid of his wrath and are afraid to make any action. There are few people who aren’t afraid to go against him. These people are devoted. Going against him they tell each other his rude ways. One man, Angus notes how afraid his subjects are. “Those he commands move only in command, nothing in love: now does he feel his title Hang loose about him, like a giant's robe upon a dwarfish thief.” Angus is saying his power is not meant for him and is too much for him to maintain. This is related to the dwarf owning the oversized robe in that manner.

Macbeth’s final time of battle is near. He realizes the forest is coming after him.  The only thing he can do is stay devoted and fight for his life. “I have almost forgot the taste of fears;

The time has been, my senses would have cool’d

To hear a night-shriek; and my fell of hair

Would at a dismal treatise rouse and stir

As life were in't: I have supp'd full with horrors;

Direness, familiar to my slaughterous thoughts

Cannot once start me.” This is a short speech about how Macbeth shall embrace death with acceptance in a way, but won’t let it bring him down so easily. If this is really how his life is supposed to end. It is at least worth the test.

In the final act of the play, Macbeth’s mistress has come to an end. He shows very little grief nor feels it.  He just embraces it. She was but a mere assistance to him in the long run. Thought of as his puppet. “Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more. It is a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Signifying nothing.” These words signify the end of Macbeth’s heart. He is nothing but a shadow of his former self, a walking beast who’s hungry for any power possible.

As shown above, Macbeth’s character has changed dramatically. Once the most modest man in the entire world, he is not a relentless demon seeking nothing but personal benefit. This gives the strong message that power can change even the kindest of hearts. Power destroys people.

Around the World

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 12:43 pm
Studies have shown that America is within the top 10 fattest Countries in the world. But we're not as high as most people think. At 74% America is the 9th fattest country on the planet. Now of course this isn't the worst, but if you look at it in another way America is the fattest superpower in the World. If compared with China, there is  huge difference. Why is that? Is it dieting? What about laws and resources? Here in America any store available has an abundance of food able to make any person become a glut whether they're the regular, vegetarian or vegan. It's worthy of stating that the fattest country in the world (Nauru) isn't number one due to over eating, but from disease. This is an excusable case from saying that these people are a bunch of gluts. Just to point out, the skinniest country in the world is eritrea with on a 4% obesity rate. That may not be the healthiest possible state if that was America.

Burger King Triple Cheeseburgers Now a Dollar!

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Obesity is one of the most common things seen in the world. More than most, in America. It leaves you trapped within a seemingly endless cycle of gluttony and immobilization and can increase your risk of several cardiovascular diseases. It’s said many fat people have a big heart. (Meaning always friendly of course) Well sadly they more than likely do. Obesity can cause an enlarged heart due to muscle tissue expansion due to overworking caused by thickening blood. Nobody wants to be obese and there should be a lot more done to stop this from taking over people across the planet.

Obesity is thought of as nothing more than just greedy people being gluts to the point where they can’t fit through their doorway. Well that is very far from the truth. A number of things can cause people to gain weight. Let’s focus on one thing that’s obvious to all people: Fast food.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 50 or so years you have seen a fast food place such as McDonald’s or Burger King. These places offer great tasting food at a cheap price. All the while dominating commercials with promises of near perfect cuisine. These can attract almost anybody to scarf down as many burgers as they can. They can do all of this for cheaper prices than a head of lettuce. Which leads me into my next point: Food prices

Buchanico Hull Art 2!

A:Negative space can be thought of as the image between the image. It can be represented as what sticks out in the picture. This was represented in the tree shown below.

B: I noticed which part was negative and positive space by taking note of what sticks out in the picture. This went for both images.

C: It can help an artist with the shading of a picture as well as perfecting the perspective of the image

D: Seeing in negative space can help improve the perspective and shadowing of a certain object. A vacuum cleaner was drawn in one art class and if done professionally shadowing would have been included. This would have been easier with Positive and Negative space.

For this project. Many things were learned to assure the best understanding. On of these things that was shown first were worm and birds eye view. After we reviewed the process of using our vanishing point. This is the center of the paper in which all animation meets. After reviewing the rules it was finally time to start the assignment shown below.

The project started with the back wall being drawn and the center of that wall being the vanishing point. After that was drawn the other two side walls were put into place parallel to one another. The center wall consisted of primarily windows which wasn't difficult to draw, but time consuming to create the blinds. The hardest part of this project was definitely drawing the close detail accurately such as the blinds while the easiest part was without a doubt drawing the actual window.

Nicholas Doroba did  a very nice job in his perspectives and really gives you the feel of the room!

Essay!

For the Ethnomusicology Benchmark I had a lot of fun creating history through the use of my own blog. It was also very nice that we acquainted it with music released at the time. It really helped educate us on the past events of African Americans.

Although the articles provided sufficient information, I am still wondering what else went on during the time of racism. It feels like a large period of time is missing from public documentation. I am almost certain other things have happened within the time period. I will further research this to hopefully find out.

For me the best part about this project was designing it. I greatly enjoyed this. I found searching for articles very difficult however.
