Rosemarie Knibbe Capstone

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in Capstone - Hull - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 9:04 pm

My name is Rosemarie Knibbe and my capstone mentor has been Ms. Hull. I chose her to be my mentor because she is my advisor and has heard me talk about my relationship with the youth group and understands my role there. I also had an out of school mentor, Kirsten Mertus. My relationship with Kirsten is not through her job but through my youth group. She is a youth leader there and has been a part of my life since I was in middle school. I selected her to be my outside mentor because she would be helping me pull together the retreat and she has an understanding of how the event would have to play out.

My capstone was to organize and lead a girls weekend retreat with my church's youth group. I also after the weekend I put together a guide on how to plan the retreat. I learned that there is a lot more planning that goes into these events than I thought. Other than that I learned the skills of how to pull together and event and how to make sure that all aspects work out.

Bibliography:

+ Graceful- Emily P Freeman

Freeman, Emily. Graceful. Letting go of your try-hard life. Grand Rapids: Revell, 2012. Print.

This source provides information about the message that the retreat is going to be centered around. I actually found this book which inspired me to make the message what this book is about. I wanted to find something that was relatable to the girls in their current lives and this book covers that. The source has been super helpful for me to figure out how to put my lesson together and how I can best approach the topic.

+ Redefining Beautiful- Jenna Lucado and Max Lucado

Lucado, Jenna, and Max Lucado. Redefining Beautiful. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2009. Print.

I chose this book because the topic really relates to things that girls during their teenage years struggle with. I wanted to make sure that they get the most out of this weekend and this book will help me to know what to say. This book covers a lot of different topics about what real beauty is and how to embrace who you are. These are core things that teenage girls need to know.

+ Bible

The Bible . Crossway Bibles, 2007. Print.

I used the Bible to find verses that apply to the theme. In my religion (christianity), the bible is the guide full of how to live your life to honor God. I chose this because I can’t have a retreat with lessons and not use the bible since it is the foundation of our beliefs.

+ Previous retreat packet

Ethridge, Shannon, and Stephen Arterburn. Girls Retreat May 6&7 2011 adapted from Every Young Woman's battle. 2011. Print.

This source is incredibly useful. This is the packet that they used for lessons in the previous years when they had a retreat. To me I was so excited that I was able to get my hands on this. I wanted to  be able to base what I did on previous things that worked. This packet will show me how things were done before so that I will have a better idea about how the lessons should work.

+ Previous retreat schedule

Heather, Cobb. Girl’s retreat Schedule. 2010. Print.

Along with the retreat packet this was also super helpful. I wasn’t able to remember everything that we did. I also couldn't remember how it was broken down time wise. I am going to use this, and replicate a similar schedule. Previously the time frames worked and so I now know how to make the weekend pan out and have it be a good time for everyone.

+ Teach the Ordinary Person’s Guide to teaching Students the Bible

Jackson, Allen. Teach the Ordinary Person's Guide to Teaching Students the Bible. Clarity Publishers, 2008. Print.

I am not a person who has had distinct bible classes since I was in middle school. My biblical knowledge is not as vast as people who are older and study it. This book is helpful in showing me how to teach and run a lesson without worrying about not being taught how.

+ Praying in Color

MacBeth, Sybil. Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God. Paraclete Press, 2007. Print.

A big struggle in the christian faith is the manor of praying and a lot of times it can be a stumbling block for people. There is the distractions that show up and make it hard to talk to God. This book as been super helpful to me in how to pray in a way that will enable you to stay focused on your conversation with God and to also remember to pray throughout the day. I chose to add this because I want to somehow show the girls this way of doing things.

+ 4 questions event planning

“4 questions to help Youth Ministry Event planning." Youthmin.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://youthmin.org/4-questions-to-help-youth-ministry-event-planning/>.

This site was helpful for me to get in the mindset that I needed to be in. It had me question what my motives were and what I wanted to achieve. It gave me a good idea of what kind of things the weekend should make happen. I do wish that the site had more things to think about but for now it works well.

+Crazy Love

Chan, Francis. Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. 1st ed. David C. Cook, 2008. Print.

This book is all about Gods love for us and how vast it is. That is one of the main themes of all the lessons and this book will help make clear how to say those things. It will also help me know those things and apply them to my life.

Session #3-Mp3

Group Members Present: Jalen S. Robbie M. Sarybel M. Rose K.

What your book club discussed:

This session we talked about chapters 7,8,9&10

How you discussed it:

We continued to do what we had been doing. We chose to pull out important things from the text. This time we also tried to connect outside examples alongside the ones given in the book. We also talked more about how we felt about the chapters as a whole.

Any points of conflict/disagreement in discussion:

Again we all were pretty much on the same page about everything that we talked about.

Questions that came up as a result of the discussion:

We really wanted to know if there were more clear ways for us to know if people are lying then what the author said. It seemed that a lot of the times he was talking in a way that a statistician would but not an everyday consumer. We were wondering if there could have been more clear ways for people who don't know statistics to figure out the truth.

What your book club discussed:

This session we talked about chapters 4,5&6

How you discussed it:

In the last session we realized how important it was to right done things that stuck out to us so that we would have things to distinctly talk about. We also followed the same format as we did previously of talking chapter by chapter so that we could easily follow. This time we also tied in outside articles as examples of what the book had been talking about.

Any points of conflict/disagreement in discussion:

Even though some points that were made were more controversial than last time, there was still overall agreement. We all talked about while creating misleading graphs is clever and all for the business it is tough for the consumers. The point was made that it seems to be worse for it to be made for government than for food or toothpaste advertisements. This point could have been disagreed on but overall everyone was on the same page.

Questions that came up as a result of the discussion:

At one point Jalen brought up a good questions about whether or not it was ok to change the y-axis on the graph and fabricating statements by adding adjectives was really a situation that no one could pin something on you and have that be ok.

* We will add the links to the articles once we have them all.

Group Members Present: Jalen S., Robbie M., Sarybel M. Rose K
What your book club discussed:
We all talked about the first four chapters of the book.
How you discussed it:
While reading the book individually we all wrote down things that stuck out to us. Once it came time for us to discuss the books we all were able to share questions or things we found interesting. As far as the format we thought it would be easiest to follow for us and the listeners to go chapter by chapter. Once we had acknowledged the chapter we were discussing someone would share an interesting point and we would go back and forth on things we agreed with and how the book brought in examples to support the thought.
Any points of conflict/disagreement in discussion:
At this point in the book there is not to much controversy so it was pretty easy for us to all be in agreement.
Questions that came up as a result of the discussion:
As a group we all are wondering about how there could be some sort of regulation in how advertisements and really anywhere uses statistics. Sort of finding a way to keep people accountable and really speaking the complete truth and not tricking people.

Recipe and Analysis-

Hummus: From: The New Moosewood Cookbook By: Mollie Katzen

Ingredients:

- 2-3 medium cloves garlic, sliced

- 2 scallions, in 1-inch pieces

- 3 cups of cooked chick peas (2 of the15 1/2oz. cans, rinsed and well drained)

- 6 Tbs. tahini

- 6 Tbs. lemon juice

- 3/4-1tsp. salt

Directions:

  1. Place garlic, parsley and scallions in a food processor or blender and mince
  2. Add chick peas, tahini, lemon juice and salt, and puree to a think paste

Pita Bread {http://mideastfood.about.com/od/breadsrice/r/pitabreadrecipe.htm}

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of yeast, or quick rising yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of lukewarm water

Directions:

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup of warm water. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Let sit for 10-15 minutes until water is frothy.
  2. Combine flour and salt in large bowl
  3. Make a small depression in the middle of flour and pour yeast water in depression
  4. Slowly add 1 cup of warm water, and stir with wooden spoon or rubber spatula until elastic
  5. Place dough on floured surface and knead for 10-15 minutes. When the dough is no longer sticky and is smooth and elastic, it has been successfully kneaded.
  6. Coat large bowl with vegetable oil and place dough in bowl. Turn dough upside down so all of the dough is coated.
  7. Allow to sit in a warm place for about 3 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  8. Once doubled, roll out in a rope, and pinch off 10-12 small pieces. Place balls on floured surface let sit covered for 10 minutes. Preheat oven to 500deg F. and make sure the rack is at the very bottom of the oven. Be sure to also preheat your beking sheet.
  9. Roll out each ball of dough with a rolling pin into circles. Each should be about 5-6 inches across and 1/4 inch thick.
  10. Bake each circle for 4 minutes until the bread puffs up. Turn over and bake for 2 minutes.
  11. Remove each pita with a spatula from the baking sheet and add additional pitas for baking.
  12. Take spatula and gently push down puff. Immediately place in storage bags, or eat away.

Analysis:

When looking at my list of ingredients the only thing that stuck out to me as something that could be considered processed were the chick peas that I will be using since they are canned and the garlic I am using because it will also be canned. Other than those two things the rest of my food will be completely whole food. The hummus was hard to determine the serving size for because it’s not quite clear how much one person will want to have of it. I finally decided to give it a good 5 person serving amount while in reality it could probably serve a lot more people. After figure out the serving size I was able to determine to nutritional facts. The hummus is about 80 calories per serving size, 2.2g of fat and such an incredibly low amount of sugar that it didn’t show up. One of the really great things is that this has 3.1g of protein per serving which is pretty decent. It also has 2.6g of dietary fiber and no cholesterol! Now for the pita bread I split it into 12 since it should make 12 pockets. This gave me the nutritional facts of it containing 115 calories, again very low amount of sugar, 0.3g of fat, no cholesterol, 24.2g of carbohydrates and 0.8g of dietary fiber. It also contains 3.2g of protein. I think that my body and anyone else's bodies could definitely handle this dish. I think that your body would be ok if you ate this for every meal. You are getting most of the nutrition's that you need from this.

Environmentally it is very kind. I can’t track back where all of the ingredients came from but I do know that most of it could be made in the US and is kind to the environment. There is a possibility that the garlic and green onion could have been made in bad conditions but they are not the main ingredients. Economically the meal is pretty cheap. It would not cost much money to make this at all. I bought these ingredients from grocery stores that were not whole foods or trader joes or a place like that, that makes me sure of who harvested the food. I do know that most likely the money is not going to the right people but that has more to do with where I got the food than what I got. I mean I definitely could have bought fresh chick peas and made them on the stove before I put it in the hummus but I didn’t which means someone else had to do that and then also can it.

Personal Reflection-

While we did the unit on food and it’s effects on your health I was out for a week due to a concussion. Because of this I was not in class for most of the unit. With that being said I wasn’t able to gather as much as my other classmates because I wasn’t there. Despite not being there I still learned a lot about how our food system works. This past year my sister has been paying a lot of attention to the foods she eats so I had an idea about why organic food was better for you but I never really took the time to look into it myself.  I really was able to notice how much processed food I ate and then because of coming up with the recipe I was able to problem solve and find a way to make it the least processed I could make. Throughout the process of looking at the given articles we read in class I was able to see just how strongly those processed foods can harm you. It really makes me rethink the way that I am going to eat from now on.

Hamlet Close Reading- Rose

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in English 3 - Rami on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Shakespeare as a writer has affected many different people. He teaches about loss and anger throughout his plays. As a play Hamlet is a prime example of how he mixes anger into the grieving of losing someone close to you. In the passage, Act 1 Scene 2 Lines 147-164, Hamlet displays the sense of neglect he feels after his fathers death. He starts off by calling out in exasperation and frustration in the opening quote “Heaven and earth”. This shows you right away that he is confused about what to feel. He continues this part of the speech with “Must I remember...by what it fed on” which indicates that he is seeing his mother lose independence and become reliant on his uncle. This creates a dilemma in which Hamlet no longer has his mother to depend on because she is no longer independent or strong. The next part “Let me... name is women” proves that his mother's lack of dependence gives him a negative view of women. He is calling women weak because of the weakness his mother has displayed. He no longer has a prime example of what a strong woman looks life. Hamlet only goes on to further point out the neglect and disappointment he is feeling from his mother. He does this in the lines “A little month... married with my uncle”. This is the point of the speech where he really goes into depth on his feelings of the remarriage between his uncle and mother. He says that his mother mourned less than a beast would with it’s mate. He goes as far as to say that when his mother was mourning with visible tears at his father’s funeral it was fake and that she hadn’t even waited for the shoes to break in before she remarried. Hamlet is thoroughly displaying his disappointment at this point. He is in despair with the outcome of remarriage. He is hit with the strange reality that he is the only one still grieving over the death of his father, the king of Denmark. This leads him to feel neglected because he is grieving and no one is with him. He continues stating his disappointment with the next lines “My father’s brother... incestuous sheets”. In this part he uses the imagery of his lack of similarity to hercules to draw attention to how he is feeling about how distanced he feels from his uncle. Claudius may have been his father’s brother but holds no fatherly affection in the eyes of hamlet. His final end to the speech with the lines “It is not... hold my tongue” show further signs of neglect. He has no one to tell his disagreements to. He can not tell his mother for she is dependent on his uncle whose is the one that stole her independence. She has torn the bond between her and hamlet by forgetting his father so quickly. He is left to store these feelings, his disappointment and confusion, inside himself. This is enough to drive anyone mad through neglect.

I think what surprised me the most was how steady the rates would be and then suddenly they would plummet. After doing certain research it was most obvious that there were drastic changes at certain points because of laws made and or important historical events. I think that it will continue to go up and down. I know that with the possibility of a new president that makes there a stronger possibility to change in how things are run. The first thing that came to our mind was keynote because it is a nice visual way to see the work that you did. I think the most challenging part of group work is making sure it is all consistent and of course that they do their part and get it done. I might try and do a more creative way of presenting the information.

Art Quarter 4

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 5:26 pm
This quarter I had played on following through with all of the plans Ms. Hull had for us. So I started on the first project- abstract. I googled abstract and saw this dart board kind of art piece. I liked it and thought I would do something like that. I picked out colored pencils that I liked and began the work. I made circles and circles until the whole paper was full. then I made lines from the middle point that made the circles all have sections. I began to color each section of one circle a different color. Then on the following circle I would color with the same pencils a different section. It took a long time to finish but I really like how it turned out.

After that project I got this idea which became my second piece. Basically it is a broken teacup sitting on a broken plate in the middle of the paper. Surrounding the teacups I but song lyrics written in a steady pattern around the shape of the teacup. I used Mumford and Sons lyrics, for the words.

Songs I Used:
Little Lion Man (In this song some of the lyrics are not school appropriate so I changed them to be more appropriate.)
White Blank Page
I Gave You All
Timsel

Thistle and Weeds

Humanities Portfolio 2012

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 9:19 am

When I think of the beginning of the year in English and History I think of the egg journal. Mr. Block told us to sit and take out our journals just like a normal class period, but it wasn’t. Mr. Block had a different plan for us today. As he calmed us down and had us listen to him he asked “Does everyone see what I have in my hand?” to which we all said yes. Before we could even ask why he was holding an egg he tossed the egg into the air and it splattered onto the floor. The volume in the room grew to great amounts and we were all shocked. He then had us write a journal entry as if we were from a different perspective than ourselves. We could be anything, the egg, the table, the floor and so on. This is a class that I mark as what our classes would continue to be like. We continued to see things from a different perspective then we had and searched desperately to hear opinions of people that weren’t getting heard.

One of the things I learned through Mr. Block’s classes is that greed is the world’s greatest downfall. As we went through the units this thought constantly came to mind. Our first major assignment in History was to write monologues about the pipeline from a unique perspective. In order to write correct monologues we did a lot of research on the XL pipeline project. I saw how destructive the pipeline would be to the environment how it would negatively affect the moral of the people who would have the pipeline on their land. It was then apparent to me that the only reason this pipeline project would be passed is because of greed. That if it was passed it would only be for the money and the government would be showing that all they cared for was the money.

From there we went into studying Cortez and how he had treated the Aztecs. A quote from my reflection of the trial is “Power and greed can easily be the end to anything.” I still stand by this quote because that is what killed so many of people during that time. If Cortez had not been so greedy he would have seen that the Aztecs had given him plenty and would have given him more. After the Cortez trial Mr. Block had us look an article, A People Apart, that showed descendants of the Aztecs who are indigenous people. Then he had us read Rigoberta Menchu’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. After we read the speech he had us write a response to two of her quotes. In reply to one of her quotes I said “We would have so much more if we had worked together. The division that has been set is going to harm us maybe just as much as we think that it has helped us.”

While we were doing those things in History we were also reading Lord of the Flies in English. Lord of the Flies is often read in most high schools, but it was really interesting how the themes in Lord of the Flies tied together with what we were doing in History. One of the biggest topics in Lord of the Flies is the greed that the children have. They are stuck on this island and are only trying to save themselves. In the end it was the greed of Jack and the other boys that killed Piggy and was the cause of the other horrible acts that happened.

Another thing that this year has taught me is that systems are created and defined by the people. The first time this really came up was during a journal entry where we read an excerpt from bell hooks. In the excerpt she talked about language and how it was a place of struggle and domination. She speaks on the power of words and language and how often they are undermined. While we were reading through the excerpt we had to pull out quotes that stuck out to us and respond to them in the journal entry. While responding to the quote “It speaks itself against our will” I mentioned “...nothing is done without someone making it that way...”. This was the start of my bigger understanding on how systems work. My understanding grew even farther when we did the cortez trial and the sweatshops trials. Throughout the trials I saw that the system could not be at the most blame because it was only made by the people and that the system can and has changed over time. It was extremely difficult to prosecute the system because we all knew that we were the ones making the system and could not get past that idea that was stuck in our heads. The systems errors were most prominent to me during the Sweatshops Trial. The blame would just go in circles. The system is what the circle is, the ruling country elites were seeing it as their only option to provide for their country because of how the multinational corporations made it. The multinational corporations continue to make it that way because consumers continue to buy the products and they continue to make money off of it. The workers themselves can’t even be said to be completely innocent.  They continue to work under the conditions and do not strike against the owners of the sweatshops. Someone could easily look at this and say that it is the system's fault but when taking a deeper look you see that the system is run by the people and only with the change of people can the change in the system be made.
The last thing I learned that I want to touch on that this year has taught me is that everyone goes through struggles differently and how people go through those struggles defines who they are as a person. This idea first was brought to mind during the first quarter when we did our descriptive pieces. For our descriptive pieces Mr. Block had us begin with a description of a piece of art, a poster or a picture in our home. We had to go into detail explaining the picture  as if the person never saw it. After we did that he had us read descriptive scenes from other people. He has us pull out things that we saw that made it a good written piece. After that he assigned to us the first part of a bigger project. The first part of the project was for us to write our own descriptive scenes. For my scene I wrote about a struggle my family went through. The final project was for us to write a descriptive paper. A quote I pulled from my paper is “But the greatest lesson I learned was that everyone handles these kinds of situations differently and no one ever gets it right.” This was the building block to my greater understanding. I was beginning to realize that everyone thinks differently and because of that how they deal with struggles are a reflection of their thinking.  Then we started to read Their eyes were watching God, a story about a young girl Janie who went through struggles with a lot of bad love all the way from the beginning of the book. Those struggles made her different and unique from all the people around her. Through those struggles she found her voice and became the full person that she was meant to be. She was content with herself, but how she went about dealing with the things might not be how other people would have handled it.
Through making this portfolio I have seen how much I learned this year. I am surprised and pleased with how I grew in my opinions and how I view the world. I have been giving so many wonderful opportunities in which to learn uniquely. This year was one of the years I will never forget.

Here is some other really great things we did and work that I did not mention in my portfolio:

I'm proud of the process for this project. I had everything done on time and we had the project finished with plenty of time. If I was to do this again I would probably work a bit harder on making the sentences more detailed and interesting. The only thing I had a tough time with was working the website were we found the different jobs.

Quarter 3 Artwork

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 9:10 pm
This quarter I decided to break away from the assignments Ms. Hull had for us and do my own thing.

Photography:

A couple of months ago my grandfather gave me his old SLR film camera to use because he didn't want it anymore. I was thrilled to have a nice film camera because of my love for photography. When I first tried to figure out how to use the camera I came out with a completely blank film. I gave it up for a while but then one of my mothers coworkers worked with me and showed me how to use the camera. We went to a park near my house and she showed me how to change the apature and the f-stop. She taught me how to tell how much exposure I needed and just the basics of working a film SLR camera. I brought the film to a CVS to be developed and was pleased that every picture on the film came out. Not all of them came out well but they were something. Most of them did come out surprisingly well. The hardest part of learning about the exposure was being inside of my house because the light wasn't as bright and natural. I didn't edit any of the pictures it is simply how the film came out which I really like the affect it has.

For the waterfall pictures I put both in despite how similar they were because I couldn't decide which I liked better. On the one hand the 1st has an erie look to it and I happen to like how it is unfocused but the 2nd I was able to focus the camera on the water and the dirt so it came out clearer.

Also the photo of the bridge uses the rule of thirds which my mom's coworkers told me about. I has 3 different points of focus and everything isn't straight on which makes it more interesting and appealing to the eye.

Color Wheel:

For this assignment I stook to Ms. Hull's plan for us. The assignment was to make a color wheel made of 12 parts and only use primary colors. I struggled a bit at first with knowing how to mix the colors to get the lighter and darker shades but I eventually got the hang of it and I'm proud of the outcome.

Texture:

For this assignment we were meant to draw three different textures but I decided to draw a bunch of scales and make it my own a bit. I drew scales that look somewhat like a dragons scales and then I colored them in with different shades of green and blue. I really like the outcome I think it really turned out how I wanted it to.

Q3BM- Rose Knibbe

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 12:02 pm

The assignment was to make a website for tourists to learn how to act, what to see, what to eat and just what to do when they come over. I learned a lot about how to describe what I want to say and how to turn something that is normal for me into a good description. I feel like it's ok but we definitely could have done a lot better. I would work a little harder on the website part of the project.

Rose Knibbe Clear Object Drawing

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 7:58 pm
Ms. Hull showed us a video of someone drawing a glass object. The video was a sped up version of everything the artist did. Then when the video was over she told us that we would be doing that. The next class she had glass objects for us and told us to get paper and a object and start drawing. At first I didn't think I would be able to do any of it. But then I thought back to the video and started where the artist had. I made a light shading on the background of my paper. Then I just started drawing the beaker (the glass object my table had) and it began to come out. I erased what I had multiple times because it was to small or the sides were uneven. After I made the outline for the beaker I started to add the details that made it look like glass. I made those with the eraser of a pencil. In the end I have a drawing that I'm really proud of. The only thing would change is I would have tried harder to mess it up like Ms. Hull told me too. I had gone up to her and shown her my drawing and she said it was good but to keep adding and I told her that I didn't want to mess it up. She said that sometimes you have to mess it up to get something better. If I could redo it I would probably have listened to that advice more.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in World History - Block on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 7:42 pm
For this project we needed to write monologs from the perceptive of someone that had to do with the Keystone pipeline project. This project helped me understand more about what was going on with the Keystone project. The best thing about this project was the knowledge I gained from the research I needed to do to be able to write my monologs. I wanted to look at the project from different perspectives which is why i wrote one monolog from each side of the matter.

Written By Rose: My Land
Talking to a truck dealer, given him the tomatoes, and complaining about the pipeline

“He’s just some environmentalist person who happens to be living in Texas.”  That’s probably what some people think when they hear my story. But it’s not true. I’ve lived here all my life. Passes box of tomatoes to the driver as he starts to pack them into his truck to sell. Once I was old enough I bought my old land, and started my family on that land. Where I live had never been a problem and it had always been my land until TransCanada decided to show up one day. They randomly showed up on my land, I wouldn’t have even known they were there unless I had seen the stakes they had placed through out my property, later that month I received a letter in the mail asking for my permission to look at my property. To bad for them, I had already pulled out the stakes and made up my mind that I wouldn’t be a part of this. A couple months latter I received another letter telling me that if I didn’t accept they would take me to court. Of course I quickly accepted and let them come under the conditions that they would give me a 24 hour warning and that I would be with them every time. But they only followed through on that agreement once. After that time I would find them on my land claiming it must be a misunderstanding of some sort. Now I’m not just being an over protective landowner. I have concerns that are legitimate. I’m this pipeline ends up happening it will take up 50 ft. of my land. Once the pipeline is placed that land can never be replanted. There is also the strong possibility of erosion from the pipe rusting. Lastly the pipeline would be harmful to many people due to the fact that the pipelines have to be heated. This is a bad thing because it will affect the grounds temperature and plants are very sensitive to ground temperature. Altogether there is another side to the Keystone XL pipeline that TransCanada and our government it not telling us. Passes the last box to the man and the truck driver responds with a solemn node and tells him he understands what hes going through.

Written by Rose: What to do?

“There seems to be a lot of controversy over this matter sir” “Do you really think risking our environment is worn the money?” Questions and questions are asked to me about this project. The Keystone XL pipeline could possibly be the most controversial project I’ve worked on yet. This project started out with only benefits in my mind. Think about it, our economy is going through one a huge crisis. We need whatever help we can get to boost our economy. Why don’t people just see it that way? This project will provide 20,000 high wage jobs. Not to mention the amount of money that our nation will gain from this. The tar sands have so much oil that we can depend on it being around and providing us oil for at least a hundred years. This will give us more energy security then we have had in the past. As an organization we are dedicated to minimizing environmental impact. The possibilities of a spill are highly unlikely and if they do spill we understand that it is our full responsibility to clean up. Also we understand our responsibility for an alternative water supply if ground wells are affected. Why don’t people see the positive things this project has? Have they completely ignored the fact that pipelines are the safest, most reliable economical and environmental way to transport oil? I just wish people would look at the other side of the matter and see that there are positive things this project could bring to the table.

Are My Hands Clean?

Every time I clock into my job I wonder, how all this oil I’m extracting is really making my hands any cleaner then they really are?

(Grabbing my gloves and jumps suit off the rack)

Working for a job that is extracting too much of the tar sand here in Canada and is overflowed with oil, they say they have a plan to move it to a United States refinery in Texas. I’ve been working with Shell to provide for my wife and kids back home, by mining the tar sands of Canada, which are not a pretty site to behold. Usually more of a barren land without nature, some say lands wealth, but I see nothing but destruction of our earth. Plus building a full proof pipeline through 6 states seems impossible to many workers and not just me. Just this past summer while shipping oil through the pipeline placed in Montana, the oil from Exxon exposed major spills through out the pipeline. Causing the land around it to become devastated with oil ruining the Yellowstone River and contaminating their major water source. I can’t imagine anything worst then building one through 6 well populated US states, and even guarantee that it won’t leak and cause big problems around those areas. I wonder am I contributing to these acts since I’m currently working for shell my hand can’t be as clean as I think they are. Causing destruction to the earth just to make an honest dollar and provide for my family. I wish I was in a higher position so I could do something better for this abundance of oil, there has to be another way out of this mess; but seeing as though I’m just a worker what can I do. Losing my job couldn’t be an option because the wealth around here is made through the trade of oil. Working with oil makes me feel that every day we take for granite our earth’s resources to make a profit, but all we are doing is soiling the ground that we eat, drink, and sleep off of.

Jail of Opinions

(Sitting against cold wall in Washington D.C. Jail looking through the bars of the cell staring at the Poster of Barack Obama)

Back in 2008 I chose Barack Obama to be my president of the United States, now that the keystone pipeline bill is getting pass by congress we can now see why we chose him to be our leader. He can save us from being a country that only cares of money and energy, to being the country that is willing to make the right decisions for our environment. I’m sitting in a cellblock in Washington D.C. jail, not because I’ve done something wrong only because I’ve spoken my opinion, yelling through the outer gates of the White House. Like many others I sit here because our government care only about profit and will stop at nothing to get their top dollar. They only are proving this when they decided to pass this bill for the formation of a mile lone pipeline that would run from southwest Canada through 6 state well-populated states to a refinery in Texas. I’ve seen the BP oil spill of the gulf and read of how it effected their waterways and killed animals and sea life. At this point I believe we are almost reaching a point where we have a choice to make, to save our earth or make a profit off of it. To me this choice is obvious save the earth we need to take care of our planet instead of building a pipeline that would be prone to leaks and spills that would affect our earth. Obama decision could be game over for the environment or a lucky save that would help our days on earth stretch a little longer. This jail cells are cold, but if I’m ever going to get my opinion heard I have to keep protesting the Keystone XL pipeline.

Written by Roger Bracy and Rose Knibbe: Pipeline

That little bird, with its hatching eggs, doesn’t know that soon that tree will be along one of the biggest pipelines in the U.S. The future for this bird is not going to be bright while I’m around. There is so much controversy over me. There are environmentalists who don’t want me to be around and then there are the planners of this project. They act as though I am there new best friend. I am the keystone XL pipeline. To be honest I am a little bugged that no one has asked me my opinion on this project. They probably just assume I want to be placed on strangers land. But if they asked me I would tell them I didn’t know how I feel about this project despite the fact its revolved around me. Sure of course I want to exist but is that all worth sacrificing peoples land? I would need a lot of up keep and I can’t tell if they would be able to take care of my high demands. Seeing as Trans Canada is trying to make me 1,700mi long, I can’t remember the last time they built one of my pipes this long. Also the pressure that is put on me to 800,000 barrels of hot crude oil is just too much not to leak. The area I’m around is counting on me to keep their waterways clean, if I do leak they will never forgive me. Plus laying my pipeline would create erosion around the land and kill and disrupt the environment.

Negative Space

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 8:25 pm
Negative space is the empty space made between and around the subject of an image.

In the cut out I had to really look at the example that was given to truly understand where the negative space was. Then I just started to work on it and i was able to come out with something close to what we needed.

In the stool drawing Mrs. Hull placed a orange paper from the ceiling to the bottom of the table. She showed us that the specs that are orange are the negative space.

When you can see the negative space in an object it helps you get a better perspective of the whole thing that they are looking at.

Yes, I think that when drawing things you can either get a really unique view from the negative space or you can even just get the drawing more accurate.

Perspective

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 10:48 pm
This project started with a simple horizon line with a vanishing point. We then drew boxes coming out from the vanishing point. After the boxes were drawn we shaded the sides to show which sides you should be able to see. The next drawing we did was a sample room. In the first class we learned how to draw walls and a door. From there we learned how to draw the basics that fill a room. A couple classes later we began our benchmark drawing which is what is in the picture. The goal of this drawing was to draw the room from one point perspective. We were suppose to focus mainly on one wall and then fill it the rest of the room from that view point.

This for me wasn't to hard to learn. I had a lot of fun drawing the room and learning how to draw realistically. The hardest thing for me was how to draw the lights. I really couldn't figure out how to make them look realistic. The easiest and funnest thing for me was drawing the windows and blinds. I feel really proud of how the windowsill pops out.

Phoenix Ward's drawing is extremely detailed. He has so many things in the room so you can tell that it is the room we were in and all of those objects line up with the vanishing point.
