Taylor Thomas

HERE is a link to download my Final Capstone!

Mentors: Douglas Herman and Olivia Smith. Mr. Herman started the program that I made the documentary about and teaches every Digital Video class at Science Leadership Academy. Olivia Smith was one of Mr. Hermans students and is a Hermanator Advisee Alum. She has helped by teaching me shooting and editing skills. Also she has been a big help in helping me find myself as a person through this Capstone process.

Summary: My Capstone is a documentary Proposal for the Roughcut and Digital Video programs. It showcases what has been done and what will be done whether or not we have modern/high quality materials.

Abstract: My Capstone process has been a very steady but challenging road. My documentary shows the amazing things that students can learn in the classes that are provided, and ways that Rough Cut Productions has benefitted not only the students, but other organizations as well. I filmed throughout the year and made sure to capture myself in the final product along with the people who created the program, and current program leaders. I really worked hard to fit as many great aspects of film and video into the documentary as I could, but it was difficult due to the fact that there are an abundance of good things to say about the program and I was working around a time limit for my final product. Even though it was hard to include everything, I learned new ways to edit video while creating my piece. A few things were split screen video, how to match sound and video when the tracks separate, and also how to make things look as professional as possible even when the highest quality of video is not available.

Bibliography:

1. Rosenthal, Alan. Writing, Directing, and Producing Documentary Films. Carbondale: Southern Illinois UP, 1990. Print.

This book was very insightful. I thought that it was very helpful because it gave me a great idea for the way that I should edit the documentary. I was very pleased with what I found in the book. the book told me that I should not go to film with a set idea in my mind, otherwise the project will not turn out to be successful. In order for this documentary to show Roughcut and Digital Videos true colors, it needs to be painfully truthful in a sense.

2. Room 237. Dir. Rodney Ascher. Perf. Bill Blakemore, Geoffrey Cocks, Julie Kearns, and John Fell Ryan. Sundance, 2012. DVD.

This film was one of the first documentary’s I have actually sat through and been engaged in. This was a film about all of the crazy incidences that happened in the movie the Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. What I took from this was that even though the footage for the voiceovers was not from any of Kubrick's films, the footage was relevant to what the people were saying about his work ethic. I thought it was pretty cool because I was just thinking of  doing actual footage that I took but it occurred to me that I can you archival footage from previous students of previous years.

3. Spector, Col. "5 Simple Mistakes Documentary Filmmakers Make." Raindance Film Festival. Raindance Film Partnership, 2012. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

This website helped SO MUCH. It basically showed you what not to do in a documentary that I think a lot of people pass up. There are many ways that a documentary can go and if you do everything that this website says not to, you, my friend, are in for naptime. This website showed me what not to do to be able to keep all of my viewers awake and engaged. For example; I had to be able to film without a set outcome in mind because if I would have done that, I would have been looking in the wrong places for people to interview. It basically says to just take a camera and see what people think about the topic.

4. Man on Wire. Dir. James Marsh. Prod. Simon Chinn. By Igor Martinovic, Michael Nyman, J. Ralph, and Jinx Godfrey. Magnolia Pictures, 2008. DVD.

This movie really pushed me to take risks with how I would like to shoot my documentary. I saw this documentary in 2012 in advisory, but did not think anything of it. When I started thinking about really sitting down and trying to figure out what I need to do to film a documentary, I thought of Man on Wire. I used a few shots that were in this movie. There is a shot where the camera is on the ground and is tilted up to see an image which is what the director did in this film with the twin towers. I also thought that this movie did a really good job of keeping the story going.

5. Exit through the gift shop

6. Spellbound. Dir. Jeffrey Blitz. Prod. Jeffrey Blitz and Sean Welch. Perf. Neil Kadakia, Emily Stagg, Ashley White, April DeGideo, Harry Altman, Angela Arenivar, Nupur Lala, and Ted Brigham. ThinkFilm Inc., 2002.

This film was pretty interesting. It helped me move my story line along in very interesting ways also. Even though the film is 11 years old, I thought that the editing was very well done. I used driving shots of driving to the spellers houses in my video to show that our school is inner city and kind of exaggerate a few things in the film. I also used another transition that they showed which is showing part of a town with a name and then showing the full image of the town and making the name disappear for  my opening credits. I really wanted my film to be as interesting as this because it really kept me involved on a topic that seemed boring to me when I picked it up.

7. Shaner, Pete, and Gerald E. Jones. Digital Filmmaking for Teens. Boston, MA: Thomson Course Technology Professional Trade Reference, 2005. Print.

This was helpful just for the filming side of things. The title really threw me off and I was really unsure of if I even wanted to read it. It blew me away though by the simple fact of having a chapter on how to make it look like you have been doing this for years. There are tricks and certain ways to film that I used in my documentary. It was really easy to pull off also.

8. Herman, Douglas F. "Roughcut Productions." Roughcut Productions. Roughcut Productions, 2009. Web. 2013.

This is the Roughcut website. This was interesting to me for my project because it describes the first few years of the program and the people that started it. It also has plenty of archival footage that is easily accessible for my usage. This was the start of my  inspiration for this project. I was really intrigued by the way the website was set up and how everything was made.

9. Herman, Douglas F. "Partners (Global)." Environmental Portraiture Partners Global Comments. Douglas Herman, 2011. Web. 2013.

This is Mr. Hemans website where he keeps all of his photos from other places in the world. This really helped me believe it or not because there is a portion from when he was in India. Roughcut is currently teaching a course online to students in India which I will touch on in my project. I went to his website to look at the differences in their environment and ours to try to help myself get a few things straightened out in my head because I wanted to see what it might be like to take this class in a different country.

10. Herman, Douglas. "RoughCutProductions Plus." Vimeo. Douglas Herman, 2009. Web. 2014.

This is another place where I can get archival footage for my documentary. I mostly pulled from one specific video which is the 2012/2013 film festival. This is where all of the videos from those two years were made and collected. That was the year that I really started digital video and had films in the full two hour long piece to showcase everything we did that year. I thought it would help because it is the most recent thing other than the few things we have from this year.

Seamus Kirby Capstone

Posted by Seamus Kirby in Capstone - Miles - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 12:15 am

Name: Seamus Kirby

Mentor: Mark Miles - I asked Mark Miles to be my capstone mentor because of his experience in computer programming. Mark Miles is a former professional programmer, and teaches computer science classes at my school, which meant he had a lot of knowledge about computer programming.

Abstract: For my capstone, I chose to create an computer orbit simulator in the computer programming language Processing. I am majoring in Computer Science in college, and hope to become a computer programmer after college, so I wanted to come up with a capstone that had a heavy emphasis in computer programming. Originally, the only thing I knew I wanted to do with the project was create a scientifically accurate gravity simulation, but as I worked on it I came up with things to add to improve my project. Throughout the process of creating this project, I learned a lot about the physics of gravity, and vectors, and was able to improve my programming skills.

The Finished Project:
Click on your operating system below to be brought to a page to download the appropriate version of the project:
Mac OSX
Windows 32 bit
Windows 64 bit

Bibliography:

1. "Akin's Laws of Spacecraft Design*." Akin's Laws of Spacecraft Design. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This source taught me a lot about the design of spacecrafts. While my program is most likely not going to involve actual spacecrafts, it was interesting to learn about the things engineers had to consider when building things in space. It also gave me a lot of ideas for things that I could put into my presentation for my capstone, because it talks a lot about the physics and dangers of space.

2. Braeunig, Robert A. "Basics of Space Flight: Orbital Mechanics." Basics of Space Flight: Orbital Mechanics. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This website was extremely helpful because it went into a lot of detail about the math behind orbits, and space. It talked about conic sections, orbital elements, the types of orbits, and many other things. This was helpful because the main thing I needed to make my program realistic was to take equations directly from physics and try to model my program after them.

3. "A Brief History of Space Exploration." The Aerospace Corporation. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014.

This source gave an overview of the history of humanity’s endeavors in space, from the first satellite to the Mars rover. I will most likely use this information in my presentation, but it will be useful if I decide to incorporate the history of space into my program in some way. It was also interesting to see the progression humanity made with space flight, and how what we put into space evolved as we learned more and more.

4. " create New Sketch." OpenProcessing. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

Open processing is a forum for people to post programs they wrote in processing, which is the same language that I am writing my orbit simulator in. It is helpful when I am struggling with a bug, or adding a feature, to look at programs on this site to see how people solved the same problem. It also is useful to look at to try and get ideas for my own program, based on what other people have done with the language.

5. Elert, Glenn. "Orbital Mechanics I." - The Physics Hypertextbook. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This website goes in depth about orbital mechanics. It includes many of the essential formulas and equations that are used in orbital mechanics calculations, making it very useful for simulating a scientifically accurate orbit. It also explains many terms that are used when describing space or orbital mechanics, making it helpful when I try to research other sources.

6. NASA. NASA, n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

NASA is one of the world’s leading pioneers in space exploration, and many of the things I learned to put into my program were originally discovered by NASA. The NASA website also has many things that I plan on putting into my presentation, including the history of spaceflight, and many other things.

7. "Orbiter Is a Free and Realistic Space Flight Simulation Program for the Windows PC." Orbiter Space Flight Simulator. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This is the website of a program that is similar to my idea. I was able to use this program to see what they did, so that I could model my capstone off of it. It helped give me ideas, and was a generally helpful resource.

8. "Reference. The Processing Language Was Designed to Facilitate the Creation of Sophisticated Visual Structures." Language Reference (API) Processing 2+. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

This resource is the reference page for the programming language processing. It gives explanations for how to use all of the main methods in processing. I used to debug my program, and to learn how to use new methods that I had not used previously. It also contained sample code that I could draw from for my program.

9. "The Space Race." History.com. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

This source gave me a lot history and information about the space race. I will use this information in my presentation, and I may add it into my program if I choose to include information about the space race. It is also a good resource on many other historical information I choose to include.

10. "Top Questions." Stack Overflow. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

Stack overflow is a forum for people to post problems they have while programming, that people respond to with solutions. When I have a problem I can either post the problem I am having, or search the site to try to find others with the same or a similar problem. People also post sample code on things that I need references for, which I also take advantage of from the site.

Name: Robert Jenkins

Mentor: Chris Lehmann - I selected him because he’s the coach of the Ultimate team and has experience in running ultimate tournaments and leagues.

Summary: My capstone was to host a high school ultimate frisbee tournament called Huck To The Moon.

Abstract: For my capstone, I decided to host a high school ultimate tournament that would work as a fundraiser for the Ultimate team. Originally this project  started off as a two day event with 16 teams, but due to heavy rains I had to postpone the event to the following weekend which caused a conflict with a number of teams spring break schedule. Through out the process of organizing the event I learned about money management  such as budgeting. One of the hardest factors of completing this project was keeping a step-by-step plan and sticking to it.Even though my plan was derailed by early contract fall outs with locations and team payment scrambling due to that confusion.

Dejah Harley Capstone

Posted by Dejah Harley in Capstone - Miles - Wed on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 8:34 pm

Name: Dejah Harley

Mentor: Alexa Dunn - She was a former writer for a very popular magazine. I wanted someone who would be able to assist me with the feel of my blog and making sure it overall looked presentable.

Summary: My capstone is a blog, SincerelyDejah.com, where I can show my ideas, opinion, things I’ve learned, and tips on skincare, haircare, and lifestyle related things.

Abstract: For my capstone I decided to create a blog related to skincare, haircare, and lifestyle things. I want to be a dermatologist so that’s where the skincare aspect of my blog comes into play. While learning about skincare, I also learned about haircare. Originally I thought the blog would only be skincare and haircare related, but I found myself also really enjoying writing about lifestyle too. To me, my blog is a reflection of everything I am curious or have any thoughts about. Throughout this year it has turned into a place where I can really share my ideas and what I’ve learned to help others. That was the goal from the beginning. My blog has has been a very useful tool in sparking conversations with different people about topics that I love.  I plan on continuing my blog throughout college and using it as a possible way to network with people as I have been.

Annotated Bibliography

"3 Rules To Smart Business Card Etiquette | CAREEREALISM." 2009. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.careerealism.com/3-rules-to-smart-business-card-etiquette/>

After getting business cards, I realized that I didn’t actually know how to use them. I hadn’t spoken with any professionals about the steps you take after getting the business cards. My initial plan was just to walk around the city and see how many people I can hand the cards to. This website helped me change that. It mentioned that when you do this, the likely hood of the person actually reading the card is slim to none, let a lone them actually checking out your website. Instead, it recommends that you spark a conversation with someone and give your card to them at the end of the conversation once you see that they are a bit more interested.

"Beautycrush." 2012. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.beautycrush.co.uk/>

There are many people that inspired me to decide to do this blog. Sammi from beautycrush.co.uk has been one of those people. I have watched her for the past few years and continue to look through her blog. She is always professional. I also like the simplistic layout of her blog and really kept that in mind when creating my blog. It was just a lot easier this way to see a model for something that I could want to see.

Belle Beth Cooper. "16 Top Tips from Blogging Experts for Beginners - The Buffer Blog." 2013. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://blog.bufferapp.com/blogging-advice-for-beginners-from-16-experts>

The first idea that this blog shows me has been a great addition to my blog. The key to success with any blog is to make sure that the readers and viewers also enjoy. This website recommends that you make sure you listen to the audience and get their response. I made a google form that is linked on my blog that helps me keep track of feedback. I have gotten some great suggestions through this and new ideas for videos. I also noticed a spark in views after I began doing this.

"Custom Business Cards | Staples®." 2009. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.staples.com/Custom-Business-Cards/cat_CL142384>

I spoke with the dermatologist that inspired me to get into the field. He was saying that one of the hardest things about the trade is getting your name out there. By being younger than most people, it is very hard for me to make sure that people take me seriously. Also, my name isn’t something that people just know, it isn’t a common or well known name. The reason why I made the blog was to kind of get my food in the door. However, he recommended that I make business cards to make myself look more professional to others. This helped out a lot with getting different age groups to look at my blog and videos.

"Essie Button." 2012. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.essiebutton.com/>

Similarly to beautycrush, Estee from essibutton.com has influenced my blog content a lot as well. The design of her blog is also incredibly simplistic but her content especially is amazing. I make a point to come up with as many ideas for my blog as possible but when i get stuck on a new type of video to do I check out her blog for some inspiration regarding future posts. Some of the posts on her blog such as “Drugstore Favorites” or “ Monthly Hits and Misses” are things I plan on doing within my blog. They are things that I personally like watching and feel that other people will enjoy as well. I also make sure to mention her if I get an idea from her.

"How to Distribute Business Cards: 6 Steps (with Pictures) - wikiHow." 2010. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.wikihow.com/Distribute-Business-Cards>

This was another site that helped me realize how to truly distribute business cards. One thing about this side is that it gets edited! They update the information frequently if they think of new tips for it so I constantly look back on this site for ways to improve my technique of distributing business cards. This site has given me ideas such as writing on the back of the business card to give it more of a personal touch. For each card I have been writing a DIY recipe or quick tip and people have been responding well to it so far.

"How to use the Canon t3i Rebel (600d) - YouTube." 2011. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH7PW2h8uA4>

I got some feedback after the first few month of creating my blog about the quality. The person was saying that they enjoyed the quality but to get more people to watch, they would recommend that I get a better camera. I took that advice to heart and was able to upgrade to the canon rebel t3i for my birthday. I had had a smaller dslr before so i understood the basics but this camera was a lot more complicated because it offered a lot more. This video helped a lot with understanding the basic buttons and things you use every time you work with the camera.

"The Skin Cancer Foundation - SkinCancer.org." 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.skincancer.org/>

I am very passionate about spreading awareness about skincancer. I constantly check the skin cancer foundation site for more information about research that is being done and things to that nature. This also helped me to realize that my blog isn’t just about acne or eczema but about spreading awareness for something as serious as skin cancer. I am doing a series on sunscreen and homemade natural products become of the dangers of skin cancer.

Treat, James R. “Personal Email.” Email. 23 Jan 2014.

This source was my Dermatologist. He was the person that inspired me to get into the field. I started emailing him at the beginning of January. He has helped me develop some things that I wanted to showcase in my blog. He has also given me advice on the field and how to market yourself. I have made business cards because of our conversations. He also emailed me about things to do in regards to things to do in my undergraduate years.

"WordPress.com - Get a Free Blog Here." 2004. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://wordpress.com/>

Wordpress is a blogging site. I have found other blogs for inspiration through this site but I also have my actual website through this blog. It is very easy to use and get adjusted to. I also was able buy my domain name through this website so that I didn’t have to worry about the long name. It is very affordable and provides wonderful free options for different website layouts. Also, I would like to make my own website from scratch and this is one of the few sites where I would be able to code directly onto the site without going through a lot of trouble with a domain name and such.

"YouTube." 2005. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.youtube.com/>.

While my goal with my capstone was to have a blog so that every post I did didn’t have to be about the same thing or a video, I still ended up using youtube as another main outlet that I had to design. Uploading movies directly to Wordpress can be extremely difficult so I just started using youtube as my way to upload videos. The people on youtube have given me a lot of inspiration. Also, more people have been able to find out about my blog have been through this site. I am able to target different types of learning audiences.

My capstone is about making my community aware about what Breast Cancer is, and I made a team for the 2014 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure that was on Mother's Day.

For my Capstone I wanted to do something that would actually be special to me. I did not want to do a project that wouldn't be meaningful to me. So I started to think about issues that affect me gender, culture, race, and age wise. And something that seemed to be a common factor among those were breast cancer. For me personally my family has been affected by the disease, and I know for millions of other people it has to. I wanted to make a difference in anyway that I could. So my initial plan was to recruit students to join the team that I would make to participate in the race that took place on Mother's Day. The process for this Capstone was one that was long and hard at times. Things did not always turn out like I wanted them to. It took a lot of  patience on my end to carry through with what I wanted my project to be. In the end I did make a team for SLA for the Race for the Cure and did the walk/run. I learned along the way that things to do not always happen like I want them to. That no matter what we always have to remember what the end goal for everything is. I hope that by me starting this somebody in  the years to come can do the Race for the Cure under the SLA team; as well as help to take steps toward finding the cure for breast cancer.

Bibliography

  1. "WebMD Breast Cancer Center: Types, Symptoms, Causes, Genes, Staging, Tests, and Treatments." WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2014. -

This source basically explains what breast cancer is. It tells about the disease and what it does. I used this source to explain to people exactly what breast cancer is. Some people may be unsure about what it is. So I used this resource because WebMD is one of the most credible online medical journals. So I can be almost one hundred percent sure that the information on here is non bias and correct.

2. "What Is Breast Cancer?" Www.nationalbreastcancer.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Jan. 2014.

This is the website for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I used this website as a source for breast examinations. One of the main ways to see if you have breast cancer is to have an examination done. It could be done at home or at a doctors office. This website explains each step and what to do when it comes to checking to see if you have breast cancer.

3. "50 Fundraising Ideas." 50 Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2014.

This website gives 50 ways on how to fundraise. For my project I will need to raise money in order to make my team for the walk. Having money is something I will need in order to make my team. But since I am not rich I must receive donations  and get money my own way while trying to put my team together. So this website has given me some new ideas on how to raise that money.

4. "The Big Pink Footprint:." Susan G Komen Philadelphia. 27 Jan. 2014

This is the website for the Susan G Komen Philadelphia Chapter. This is probably my most important source. It tells me what to do when it comes to making my own team. As well as giving me resources to people that will help me. When I do the walk I will need to be registered with them and they will tell me exactly what to do. So this is my most important website for doing my whole project.

5. "What are the key statistics about breast cancer?" What are the key statistics about breast cancer? 26 Jan. 2014 <http://www.cancer.org/cancer/breastcancer/detailedguide/breast-cancer-key-statistics>.

This websites gives the most recent statistics when it comes to breast cancer. I used this because I will need to tell people just how serious of a problem this disease is. That somebody they know has breast cancer or will develop it statistically speaking. So doing this walk.run is something that is needed to help support research for this disease.

  1. 6. Schawbel, Dan. "5 Ways to Network in the Real World." 5 Ways to Network in the Real World. 27 Jan. 2014 <http://www.theladders.com/career-advice/5-ways-to-network-in-real-world>.

This source gives various ways to network. It includes whether it be on social media, or by people that I know. It gives key details and tips on how to make my circle bigger. Networking is something that I will need to do for this Capstone. The more participants I get, the more sponsors, and the more money that can be raised for my Capstone.

7.  Kelly. "Welcome." Inspirational Breast Cancer Survivor Stories | Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. 27 Jan. 2014 <http://makingstrides.acsevents.org/site/PageServer?pagename=MSABC_FY13_StoriesOfHope>.

This is a story about a woman named Kelly. She talked about how breast cancer ran in her family and that she always did early screening and got regular mammograms. But that she still unexpectedly developed an aggressive breast cancer. But through different foundations and walks that the money raised helped her get the treatments to get rid of it. This can be used to show why my Capstone is important. That most families will be affected by this cancer and it is important to keep making teams who do walks and races to raise money to help people.

8.  "Financial Information." Susan G. Komen®. 25 Jan. 2014

This source is very important for this project.  A big part of my Capstone is the fundraising. That in order to make my team and do the walk/run on Mother's Day we have to raise the money. But I do not want to raise the money and then not see where the money is going. Or have other people committed to my team and not know exactly where their finances are going. So this source shows the Susan G Komen's finances for all of the past years. And it also explains how the finances are distributed back to breast cancer research and treatment.

9. "Corporate Partners and Sponsors." Susan G. Komen®. 27 Jan. 2014 <http://ww5.komen.org/allCorporatePartners.aspx>.

This is a source that tells just how big the Susan G Komen foundation is. There are a lot of breast cancer foundations. I wanted to make sure that for my Capstone I picked one that was renowned and very well known. So this is just a list of so many other famous companies that sponsor the Komen Foundation and are their partners. This just reassures my team and I that we are actually working with the biggest breast cancer foundation, and it will do the maximum amount of help.

10. "Careers / Internships / Volunteering." Susan G. Komen®. 27 Jan. 2014

This is a source telling how else to get involved. I do not want my Capstone to be the only time that people are involved with this important topic. During and after my Capstone I still want people to care about Breast Cancer Awareness; including myself. So if people want to find out how they can still volunteer this is the source for it. Or even if somebody wants to continue this same Capstone idea by having a team for next year's walk then this is the source for them.

10/31/13 Capstone: Sound effects

Posted by Joseph Tartaglia in Capstone - Miles - Wed on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 9:04 am

I discussed how to use microphones and what type of microphones are good for what type of audio, I showed them how to create a sound that could sound like somethings else (for instance banging on a locker really fast sounds like gun shots through metal)

We also edited a sound effects track together and i showed them how to mix sound effects into each other so it would sound good, and not a mess.
