Robert Jenkins Capstone

Posted by Robert Jenkins in Capstone - Miles - Wed on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 2:56 pm

Name: Robert Jenkins

Mentor: Chris Lehmann - I selected him because he’s the coach of the Ultimate team and has experience in running ultimate tournaments and leagues.

Summary: My capstone was to host a high school ultimate frisbee tournament called Huck To The Moon.

Abstract: For my capstone, I decided to host a high school ultimate tournament that would work as a fundraiser for the Ultimate team. Originally this project  started off as a two day event with 16 teams, but due to heavy rains I had to postpone the event to the following weekend which caused a conflict with a number of teams spring break schedule. Through out the process of organizing the event I learned about money management  such as budgeting. One of the hardest factors of completing this project was keeping a step-by-step plan and sticking to it.Even though my plan was derailed by early contract fall outs with locations and team payment scrambling due to that confusion.

Process Paper:College Dropouts

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 3 - Pahomov on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 8:16 pm

My group’s campaign topic is  College Dropout rates in Philadelphia and what we planed to do was first raise awareness that this is a growing problem in Philadelphia, while also pointing out different solutions to fix it. So Devante, Joshua, Aazimah and I decided that we were going to create a poster, flyers, a PSA and a twitter page to present this problem to our target audience. Our target audience was college students in Philadelphia so we would host most of are campaigning downtown near Penn and Drexel Campuses.

My roles in this project were to create the twitter page, find places for us to post and hand out our flyers and work on the group PSA component. Each of these component to me had their own advantages and disadvantages, such as how I may have found a place where college students do come past but when we went to that location during lunch hours their was no one to hang out the flyers too. But overall I think I made some good progress on my components of the project such as networking on twitter. My groups’ account is now sending our message out to 70+ followers which considering that it has only been active for a week that is a rapid approval rating. This also shows some success to the flyers and posters made by other group members because the username to the twitter page is posted on each component.

Mayor John F. Street choose to devote a extra 250 million dollars into developing and brighten up to the residential areas of the city. As a cause of this the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative or NTI was created to be the organizer of the projects that this money will be spent on. But it turned out that the program has been a failure for sometime because the NTI didn’t make the plans in order to restore the city. “The truth is, until Philadelphia starts spending its NTI money, no one actually knows what changes the effort will bring.”

Beard, Elizabeth. Green Works in Philadelphia. EBSCOhost. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail?vid=7&sid=133b070a-9292-4ed4-961b-b09cdbdbc92e%40sessionmgr11&hid=27&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#db=ofm&AN=84635847>.

Mayor Nutter takes a different approach to city recreation. His goal is to make Philadelphia the greens city in America by the year 2015 and has wrote a multi-decade budget of 2 billion dollars to complete this goal. This can show that the reason why are problem of abandon buildings hasn’t been tackled because the programs focus has been flipped to making Philadelphia a more energy efficient area.

            "Philadelphia's Future." Telephone interview. 15 Feb. 2013.

We got a chance to speak to the executive office at PACDC and he explained to us the things that we might not be able to know about his job. Such as how they decide to spilt the budgets between each branch of the corporation. Such as NPDC or WPDC.

"Abandoned Philadelphia." Abandoned Philadelphia. Wordpress, n.d. Web. 14 Feb. 2013. <http://abandonedphiladelphia.com/page/2/>.

This is a unofficially data base of different restoration projects that have been implemented and proposed in order to cut down the overwhelming number of 50,000+ vacant properties in the Philadelphia area .It says in one article about how councilman Bobby Henon believes the city should wage war on the absentee landlords by increasing the cost of fines for landlords that choose to negligent their property. This shows that there is a push by the city to hold owners accountable for their property.

Pennsylvania Pictures. N.d. Photograph. Pennsylvania Pictures, Philadelphia.Pennylvania Pictures. Web. 14 Feb. 2013. <http://abnf.co/pennsylvania_pictures.htm>.

This gives a visual look on the amounts of abandon buildings in Philadelphia. But the most interesting thing is the amount of these building that were former factories for some major corporations. How can we just allow corporation to just up and leave the city with the mess to clean.

Artist Statement By Robert Jenkins and Helen Kilmartin

Artist Statement

We choose to create a crayon book using a pencil box that would light up different colors to give the idea that it was many colorful crayons inside of the box. But you would only see the light when you close the box. This is because we placed a switch on the top of the box that is turned on by shutting the box and released once it is opened. We liked this idea that it was simple to create and can be applied to use in the real world. Even after we completed the circuit we found that it was still room to fit actual small pack of crayons into the box. What this design shows about us is that we are creative students looking personal their daily tools that they carry to school each and everyday.

The LunchBreak

Interview
Preview: You are going to hear a story  from to someone who migrated from one area to another and how she had to adjust to life in their new environment.

Reflection:

I believe crossing boundaries generally have to do with two situations one is to better your life or the life of others and the other is to break a norm because you don’t that it fits with ones personal morals. For example moving to America was a way for Kristi’s dad to better his family’s life with the new job opportunities he could obtain in the United States. I found this project to be very fun and creative because we all got to research are own diverse subjects and explore as journalist. This made it more engaging to me because I had the ability to not make it boring. Also during the videos I learned a lot about the different and cultures in Germany and Albania. But I found that editing and creating a podcast extremely hard because some times you cant get the volume or the correct deletion of bites to fit correctly.

Strengths: Good Questions, Made it seem like a real radio/podcast, Volume lacked background noise for the most part.

Weakness: Choppy Editing

Stop.Switch.Articulate

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 2:06 pm

“Sup.” I said.

“Tired.” my friend replied with a yawn.

“What Class we got first.” I asked.

“Spanish.” he replied.

“We mine as well get up dere now.” I said.

“Mine as well its already 8 o’clock.”

This is an example of my normal dialogue when I just get into the school building and greet my friends. I talk like this because it is a relaxing and much way easier to speak. Also, its something I have become accustomed to because this is how most of my peers and I communicate on a daily basis. Mostly because to us its such a easy and leisurely   way of speaking to one another. Though we are educated enough to realize that this is not the grammatically correct way of communication in qworking field or  profession. This is why during situations in school or the workplace I code switch. I switch my dialogue so the listener will pay attention to the information I am trying to tell.

For example, if I was to have a interview for a job I would not go in the employers office saying “Wats up I’m here for dat job interview jawn.”. Instead I would walk into the office and say “Hello I am Robert Jenkins I’m here for my job interview.”. As you can see this is a huge difference between the way I greeted my friend  at the beginning of a school day, and how I speak to people of higher authority. The reasons for making this change is so that the employer does not look at me as something that I am  not or to fit in with the kind of workers already with the establishment. For example I could be one of the best people for the job just as James Baldwin said in If Black English Isn’t A Language, Then Tell me What Is?  “To open your mouth is to put your business in the streets” and this could cause people to have the wrong opinion of me. They could believe I am a poorly educated young man and is not truly serious about this job or my future. Even though this is completely untrue I could not blame the employer for coming up with that assumption because what else would that kind of speech apply. This the kind of Code Switch that I have to make for many different occasion through out life.

Another reason I might code switch  is because I am uncomfortable with the people who are surrounding. Most of the time I use this kind of switch when I am going to new school, Church, or any other place that I am unfamiliar with. I remember the time I was in a similar situation when I was shadowing at SLA.

“Wassup”  “Hi” I replied, “You ready for the day.”, “Yes I guess.” I replied. My Conversations with my Student Tour Guide went on like this for most of the day until I got use to the school a little and him. Once I was able to develop this relaxed relationship with my surroundings I was able to switch back to my usual sense of dialect.

A time where I mistakenly for got to code switch was when I was talking to my mom about the cost about of some Watch The Throne Concert Tickets. “How much are for good tickets.”, I said. “The Best Price and Seats I could find was 200.” “Are you serious!” I replied. “Very.” “Damn it” I said. Completely forgetting that I was having this conversation with my mom and not one of my friends in school, but luckily she really catch what I said so I was able to get out of it with ease. This is a situation where using the wrong dialogue could of got extremely ugly.

I change my way of speaking for many different occasion but they each are similar in the reasoning behide it. I do each change to try to either fit or to not be judge by others. I do not  do it in the sense of being fake to new people and make them believe that I’m not because I truly am ok with my own personality, but the comfort of not being judged is always a plus. But Code-Switching is not something that I just personally have to do but everyone in the world might have to change their dialogue at some point in time.

Life Changer By Robert Jenkins

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 8:33 am
Its November 11th a day to give thanks to the control so im going to take my annual trip to Philadelphia National Cemetery and pay my respect to the greatest war hero who ever lived. Julius R. Jenkins. That man was like a father to me and gave up his life for the safety and everyday I just wonder why would he do it. It Should have had been me if wasn’t for me he would be here today. Why did he choose to save me who or what did he see in me that was worth saving? I look at the name Howard Jackson I think of a worthless man who managed to destroy everything in his life. So what potential did he see upon me that was worth saving. I guess its just something I will never understand Julius so certainly one of those things. But his deaf leaves me with great regret and at the same time hope because if he believed  why can’t I learn to believe in myself. I rethink that week all the time too try to understand….

We were under heavy fire from the North Vietnamese Army and I had just knifed the chest of a enemy solider that had rushed into me. The battle had me full with so much adrenalin that I forgot the strategies that you to taught me that have so many times kept us alive through so many battles. Like the one when u said to secure every kill with a second cut to the throat to be sure that your enemy will never get up. But I didn’t instead I turned my back on him and the wounded enemy was able to draw his gun and fire.I slowly began to turn around in shock of the fate I will soon take I felt powerless and it seem as if I could not move. But then came you  jumping right in front of me  pushing both of us down to the ground. As we laid on the ground I began a sigh of relief, until I notice this blank stare in your face and you where not responding to my cries.” Ceaser Ceaser are you alright” no answer so pushed you off from the top of me and noticed you have been shot 3 times and where heavily bleeding. So I rushed you back to home base for medical attention but by time we had made It I had already lost you. From that moment in life I decided that it was time for me too change my life around. See even in the past life you are still my teacher. So for that I thank you Julius u are a true life changer

I write because im told to do so by teachers in order to get a good grade on classes. But i believe that people in general write because writing is the basic of communication between each other. Also writing in different ways such as poems or songs can be a great way to express your opinion, feelings, or life experiences.

Where Misty Go?

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 3:10 pm
How could you do that to a ten year old? Don’t you know the significance of a dog to a caring family? I always seen this in movies but never would of though that the sad crying little boy or girl  would someday happen to me. What am I talking about you ask? I’m talking about the time that my dog was almost took in away from me.

It was a great day for cookout I spent the whole day with my family .It was fun even the ride home was a funnier then the usual. When I got home I  sat down and watched television, then I happened to noticed that no one had let my dog Misty in from the backyard. So I went to the backyard to let her out, but this seemed to be only a failed attempt because she was not  sitting outside the door from hearing the rattle of the door. I began to look around the backyard for her but she was nowhere to be found .Then, I noticed in the left corner of the gate there was a huge  opening big enough for more then a dog to go under. So my family and I quickly assumed that someone had broken to are backyard and either set my dog free to roam in the cruel world or try to take her for themselves. This seemed to be one of the  worst days of my life  because I could be losing a long time friend that I have known since I was just 4 years old.

Shortly, after we began our long search for the family dog we came to believe that our seem futile. A month had gone by there has been no citing of her around the neighborhood and we haven’t received any calls from anyone who have seen our flyers. Perhaps its because we only had a picture of Misty at 3 years old when she was now 7. After about a month of searching my parents found that there was no point invest any more money or time to continue the search. So we began “the waiting game” it seem like I have been waiting by the phone  each day for years  and yet its only been a couple weeks.

After about 2 months of Misty had been lost we finally got a call from a man saying he had found our dog on a corner,  and had taken her to his house around 40th and market where she had been staying for a couple of days. Until he noticed that she had a collar with her name and our phone number incase she gotten lost. So I told him we would be there to pick her up as soon as my mother gets  home from  work. Later that day when my mom returned home I told the great news and her mans address. We left out right then and there so I could be reunited with my dog and I thanked the man  for his kindness and for helping us find our dog. Ultimately it all ended great, and I had a totally different perspective on the world and nice society might  actually be.

English Profolio - Reading Review "The House of the Scorpion"

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 10:16 am

A book review was when we choose a book and instead of giving a traditional book report instead we had to review it. The difference of the two are that in a report you more tell the about the book but in our reviews its like more showing than telling.

The book I am reviewing is a science fiction novel called “The House of the Scorpion” by  Nancy Farmer. This book has been honored with many awards such as
Newbery Honor, National Book Award, Michael L. Printz Award, Young Hoosier Book Award, etc.

The basic plot of the book Is about a boy named matt that is really a clone to a evil science professor named El Patron who controls mostly everything  and  everyone. But as through out the book Matt learns more and more information about himself as a clone and El Parton as a dictator to society.  The conflict of this story is person vs. person. This is because its Matt vs. the dictator El Parton  but the problem is that Matt is brain washed to believe that El Parton is his friend but he is really just a clone he wants to be in handy for spare body parts if something goes wrong.  You should take away from this book that everyone is not your friend and you can not live in world blind of your own personal thoughts. For example you can not expect someone to always be their to do everything for you and lead you through life’s task. Basically you should take away from this that its good to have independents

I  can relate to Matt in this story because just as for him everyday in my life is a opportunity to learn something  new with in my self. So I can someday have a vision of what a great life is for. The feeling I felt that a character in the story also felt was the down feeling of being accused of something and having no one believe me when I say I didn’t do it. This was the same feeling that Matt has when everyone is accusing him of killing Furball.

My personal opinion of this book is that it is a must read for anyone. This story had me on my toes from the minute I picked it up. The special thing about this book is that I have not came across to anything with a similar plot or way to present the conflict. The strength of this book is that it’s a original plot and  the suspense level it puts on the reader is unbelievable. I don’t find significant weakness in this text.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a different kind of story to read and loves a suspenseful book fraught with mystery this is the book for the job. I loved this book and wish everyone could obtain the same care for it as I did.

IF you found a way to get on a block websites would you share it?
1.I would keep it to myself so  I could do it again if necessary because if a lot of people begins to use the same trick it becomes easy  to get catch up with. For example  if you find a way to use block websites in school you mite not get catch but you tell your whole class the trick your teacher or the school distinct sever will detect it faster.

What is a “hero”? How would you define it?
2.I define a  hero as someone who is not necessary supernatural but is able  to make a difference in someone’s overall life.  For example someone that could be a hero is a great teacher that lesson shaped you on to the path to success. Or your hero’s can be your parents that guided you through your life through thick and thin.

3.If you really knew me......

You would know that i just a regular kid looking to have fun everyday. If you really knew me you would know that i hate work but know the importance of it so i just get it done. If you really knew me you would know that sometimes i feel like im people expect to high of me.

4.What makes someone an “adult”?

What makes someone is someone that is 18 and has independent from their parents. For example if you are 18 but you still love under your parents home and they pay for everything your more of a big kid then a adult to my standards.

In this project we had to compare and contrast the book The Odyssey and the movie brother thou art thou. We had  to come up with Points of Contrast and Comparison. Then Conclude the charters at the end.

The movie “O Brother Where Art Thou” and “The Odyssey“ features two adventurers who encounter similar pathsb but  but handles their paths in told different ways. Everett is a convict that is sentenced to work on the chain gang. He makes up a lie about a treasure of 1.2 million dollars. So that his friends Pete and Dumar will break free and help him get to his wife before she remarries. Odysseus is a leader of a Roman army who has been away from his wife Penelope and his Son Telemachus for 10 years. He tries to get back home before his wife remarries because he is believed to be dead.

Odysseus and Evert are both on journeys to get back to their loved ones, however they both take two different approaches to complete their journeys. Evert has to lie in order to make his friends want to break out but Odysseus already has a loyal army that also needs to get home as well. This shows that his peers respect Odysseus more, because he doesn’t have to make up a lie in order to get followers to join him on his journey. Also during Evert’s adventure, he has to continue to fight for power as the leader of Pete and Dumar, especially after they learn that the Treasure is a fake.

There are many differences in how Evert and Odysseus take their journeys.  Evert has only his two friends Pete and Dumar to take on his adventure but Odyssey has too lead him and a whole army from island to island through so many different dangers and encounters. However they both do encounter Sirens for example in book 12 Circe says to Odysseus as she explains to him about his journey. “First you will raise the island of the sirens.”(Book 12: line 44). In O Brother Where Art Thou Evert and his companions are led to the sirens by their song then is left there over night and Pete is captured by the ”Devil” and forced to tell were they are trying to get towards as they run away from the chain gang.

Evert and Odysseus are both sharp-witted men who have to go through great obstacles to get back to their homes and loved ones. But even though Odysseus and Evert are both on journeys to get back to their loved ones, they both take two different approaches to complete their journeys.

This was when we had to do a Memoir of a time are life that matters to us. I chose to talk about the time I had a summer job and work for a horrible boss.

The Boss By Robert Jenkins (
Original)

Bull Crap Bull crap, these young adults don’t listen to me I’m a kid. Man let me tell you last summer I decided I was going to make me some money with my free time. So I could be independent till September then it’s in my parents pockets I go. I was going to be able to buy clothes, go to the movies whenever, and buy any videogame I wanted. So I found a job at MLK Recreation Center they tell me I get paid 7.25 an hour for 4 hours a day. So I'm like what a sweet job and its watching kids at an after care that’s cake.  All I have to do is interact with little kids. But little did I know my boss was some big grumpy lady that sole purpose was to make my summer full of anguish. She gave me the job of watching kids ages 15-16 even why knowing I’m 14. But gave her daughter and niece the job of watching kids ages 5-10 that’s totally unfair.

How was I supposed to make people older then me listen to me as their guardian? Then though they all were shorter then me and had a mind set of a little child. But still if I was in their shoes I would look at this 14 year old and say sit your little a** down who you think you talking too.  So after that moment I decided I was going to let them do whatever and I were going to sit somewhere and just sit back and relax the day away. Like their 15 why do they need after care anyway I can see you go to camp but after cares for little babies who can’t be home by there self. So when it was time the go outside they went out and started harassing the little kids and I just sat on the bench at the end of the park texting not realizing that the Boss will chew me up if anyone gets hurt on my watch. So I got up and did my job and led them back in into the building. As I did I noticed the kids starting to look at me as if they were going to do something, but they had another thing coming if they thought they could just run all over me like a Track star. So when we got in the class room I told them they were going to sit still and play like young olds with common sense.

However that attempt was what I call an epic fail because in less than a half and hour the room was uncontrollable and I didn’t know what to do. All I could think of was to ask my boss what to do. As she sat at a desk watching this mess and stuffing her fat face full of KFC chicken. Nevertheless she was no help because all she said was  “You have to make them know you’re the boss” and then she started laughing. I didn’t see what was so funny yes the kids where having fun but they could have did this in a more Conscientious manner of acting.

After two hours of uncontrolled time with the children I was switch it to finish the rest of the day at the front office. What a relief from them villainous kids and that dumb lady. This ending of my day was way better than working with kids because now I was a assistant and I didn’t have to deal with my main super visor. I was running back and forth doing all kinds of task. Such as filing, cleaning and working at the sign-in desk.

It’s almost time togo for me since their parents have picked up all the kids in my group. After they were gone I cleaned the messy room and was ready to rush put the door. But that Insolent woman stopped me and said “There is pieces missing to three board games your group was playing with them so your responsible for them being found and you can’t leave till they are.” I groped around looking for the pieces that I finally found in a child’s desk and then left work 10 minutes later then schedule. I though about quitting that day but I realized I’m not a quitter and sometimes a man's got to do what man have to do.

 The Boss By Robert Jenkins

I was at MLK recreation but this was not my dream. Man, let me tell you about last summer. I decided I was going to make me some money with my free time. With employment, I could be independent until September then dependent on my parents come school again.. I was going to be able to buy clothes, go to the movies whenever, and buy any videogame I wanted (Magic 3). So I found a job at MLK Recreation Center for $7.25 an hour for 4 hours a day. But little did I know my boss was some big grumpy lady whose sole purpose was to make my summer full of anguish(vocab). From the first time we met she was yelling at me for being late on the first day even though I explained to her I never had even been in North Philadelphia by myself and I had gotten lost. After being torn of my happiness she gave me the job of watching kids ages 15-16 even while knowing I was 14. But she gave her daughter and niece the job of watching kids ages 5-10.

The Macbeth Charter Analysis was when we had to  describe the charter change of either Macbeth or lady Macbeth. While incorporating 10 quotes from the passage. I chose to describe Lady Macbeths change from power hungry woman to a lunatic fraught with guilt.

English BM1 (original)

Robert Jenkins

Thesis Statement-Lady Macbeth went from a power hungry woman to a lunatic filled with guilt who is a threat to Macbeth’s throne. But also cause Macbeth to turn evil as well.

This Quote was said in Act 1 Scene 5 page 17 and told by Lady Macbeth. It takes place after she just finish reading a letter Macbeth Sends her after he is name Thane of Cardor and the witches propensity tells him he will be king but she doesn’t believe he has the guts to take over therefore she wants to gain power. She wants to be treated has a man because they have power. The Quote is “Come you sprits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here”. This is important to her growth it shows that she wants power in her life and to help Macbeth get to were he needs to be king.

This Quote was said in Act 1 Scene 7 page 22 and told by Lady Macbeth after she tells Macbeth they should plan to murder Duncan. She says it because she wants him to agree with her ideas. The Quote is “As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life And live a coward in thine own esteem, “ This is important because it shows how that she is evil and is ready to stop at nothing to gain the power she seeks.

This Quote is said in Act 1 Scene 7 line page 22 and is told by Lady Macbeth. This is said as her and Macbeth is talking about killing Duncan and she is trying to convince him to do it. By saying is not a man and he is a coward. She says to Macbeth “When you durst do it, then you were a man; and to be much more the man. “This is important because this is one of her techniques to get Macbeth to do as she please so that she can have power as the Queen.

This Queto was told by Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 7 on page 23.It talks as if that Lady Macbeth trickery and Indirect reasoning to make him believe he could kill Duncan and get away with it. He says, “False face must hide what the false heart follow. Which is important because if Lady Macbeth can get her husband to believe in himself and go with the plan she would be one step closer to her goal. Also it tells how even with out doing something herself she stills know how to get what she wants.

This is told by Lady Macbeth in Act 2 Scene 2 page 29-30.This is right after the murder of Duncan is committed and Macbeth is placing the daggers on the servants. She says, “Retire we to our chamber A little water cleans us of this deed. This is important because from that part of the passage it shows how Lady Macbeth had no regret for her actions. This is because she is only in the thought if protecting herself and getting what she wants.

The next part of the passage I will analyze is said In Act 3 Scene 4 page 52.It is at the dinner honoring Macbeth as the new king of the land. It states, “You shall offend him and extend his passion. Feed, and regard him not- Are you a man?” This Statement is important because it shows how that Lady Macbeth is able to with stand her pure evil plan even when her loyal partner is not.

This Quote was said in Act 5 Scene 1 page 83 said by a Doctor. This is when a doctor and a woman are looking after Lady Macbeth. The Doctor says, “ I have teo nights watched with you, but can perceive no truth in your report. “This is important because the Gentlewoman has seen Lady Macbeth acting strange at different times of the night but she has no clue why.

The Gentlewoman says this Quote in Act 5 Scene 1 page 84. This is as the Gentlewoman and Doctor watch Lady Macbeth as she sleeps and notice that she is up sleepwalking. She says, “Ay, but their sense are shut. “This is important because after they see that she is sleep walking they continue to watch and as they do Lady Macbeth begins to tell important secrets that her and Macbeth share.

Lady Macbeth tells this Quote on page 84 Act 5 Scene 1. It is as Lady Macbeth sleep walks and start to talk to herself. She says “Out, damned spot! Out, Isay! One – two – why when ‘tis time to do’t. This is important because this is her first showing of guilt. This is because she guilty about the murder that her he Macbeth have done that she begins to sleep walk and talk about a spot of blood on her that she can’t get off her. Also with out knowing she gives the information of the murder to the doctor and gentlewoman.

Macbeth in Act 3 Scene 3 tells this Quote on page 89.This is after Malcolm, Siward and Macduff have made an alliance to come kill Macbeth. Also Lady Macbeth is still sick and ill. He says to the doctor “ Cure her of that Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased”. This is important because this is Lady Macbeth final change because she has now became crazy and now she is becoming a distraction. For example Macbeth has to worry about this alliance coming to fight him but also has to worry about his wife health. Which is splitting his mind on too two thoughts, as he must make critical decisions as king.

Conclusion-Lady Macbeth’s transformation was more crucial to the plot of the story because as described in my quote it tells how this whole idea and plan to become king and queen was her’s. But after finally achieving it she gets guilty about what she has just caused he then gives up Macbeth secret. Which makes the whole country turn on him and ends his reign as king and his life as a man.

English Profolio- Reflection

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 9:42 am

This portfolio really shows how I have made huge process in my writing through out the year. The viewer should be able to get to know a little about me from reading  some of these pieces of work such as my all about me magazine and memoir notebook projects.

My weakness in writing would have to  be my spelling and grammar. My strength is the way I follow directions and is able give the teacher what they are looking for. I will continue to work on my grammar.

By writing this portfolio it was like a way to see how I have truly made progress as a writer. For example it shows how writing 2 page reports at 12 times font as became easier to do.

I am most proud of my Book Review on “The Beast”. I’m most proud of it because it was one of my best papers grammar and spelling wise and also had great organization. Also I’m proud that it is my highest grade work of the year.

Are You Worth Enough Part 3

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 2:32 pm

In order to get some inside information about how people feel about these budget cuts and what are they exactly to some schools, I interviewed a student and teacher from my school (SLA).

The teacher that I choose to interview was English teacher  Alexa Dunn. I ask her questions about how the budget cuts effect her lesson plans for upcoming year and she feels she will handle the situations. She stated “My lessons won’t be affected, but I might have to cut down on my use of paper next year since our supplies budget was cut from $80,000 to $30,000 ( a $50K loss) and this means we will all have to learn to do without the same quantity of supplies.” Also while  saying that she would put other supplies such as books or  films on DonorsChoose.org to see if these things can be funded. I believe a teacher should not have to go through the trouble to search for supplies  he or she to use to teach the adults of the future that the world will someday have to depend on. Another question I asked her was, “What are the procedures or plans for cuts that you know  that will be taking place at SLA.” She responded to this by talking about the lay offs of Staff members such as Jon Amsterdam and Josh Newman. Also the lays off Jeremy and Luke even though their were grants secured to fund their salary of next year. Which will not be paid by the school district. This is devastating to me because these are real people who need their jobs to survive in life.

The student I choose to conduct a interview with was Sarena Shuman 9th  grader at Science Leadership Academy. I ask her two questions which were about how aware was she about the budget cuts and also how do they make her feel toward the government. She says that she very aware of the budget cuts especially since she is a athlete and has to keep informed about cuts to sports. She also say that by these cuts they are giving Philadelphia  less of a  chance to succeed.

To me i have the same overall feelings as Sarena about this conflict and i believe they can find less important things with in the city to make cuts on other than education.

 Direct Dialogue of Interviews

1.How will the budget effect your personal lesson plans for next year. Dunn: My lessons won’t be affected, but I might have to cut down on my use of paper next year since our supplies budget was cut from $80,000 to $30,000 ( a $50K loss) and this means we will all have to learn to do without the same quantity of supplies. Maybe I’ll become more into technology and grade just on the electronically submitted work.  Any other supplies I need (additional books, texts, films, etc) I will put up as fundraising proposals on Donors Choose.org to see if I can get these things funded and won’t need to lean on school funds.

2.What are the procedures or plans for cuts that you know  that will be taking place at SLA.

Dunn: We have to let go of 2 faculty/staff members (Jon Amsterdam and Josh Newman).  We had to lay off Jeremy and Luke but we just secured grant funding for next year to bring them back and be able to pay them (but their salary doesn’t come from the district). The supplies budget will be cut the most, along with money for student activities, trips, and extracurricular activities..

Student questions

1.How aware are you of budget cuts and what they hold.

Sarena: I’m pretty aware, I do sports so it effects me in a big way i read up on it as much as possible

2.Do you feel about the decision of the government to make budget cuts.

Sarena: I feel like they not giving Philadelphia children a chance, as we need as many as possible. Government not think about the future these are the future citizens and mayors lawyers, but they not giving us kids a chance

Is Your Future Worth Enough Part 2

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 1:57 pm
As follow up research about budget cuts I was able to find out the direct effects on sport cuts. The cut will take away 7% of the funding towards  public sports. This  will result in a complete cut of middle school intersolatic sports leagues and teams. It will also cause minor cuts of some sports in High schools.

But as a student i will like to know how this is directly effecting how students like me will learn and how teachers will teach. For example is the class sizes getting increase to much larger amount? Or will to be something like school will have less resources to text books or computer technology? This is a group of question i hope to research and answer for my next blog entry.

Is Your Future Worth Enough

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Education is one of the most valuable things in a person life and it is only better if it is allowed to be taught to best potential. But lately this has been hindered in the Philadelphia area. This is all the cause of School Budget Cuts. This is an important topic in the Philadelphia community because it greatly affects what type of education that thousands of kids will get. As of now I know that some of possible budget cuts for next year are....

  • 22 million out of kindergarten funding. Which causes half days only for kindergarteners.
  • No extended days programs, which was used to help 11,000 students a year.
  • 430 central office jobs lost.
  • Gifted and Talented Education cut 50%.

This list goes on much longer but what I wonder is how this will affect extra curricular activities such as basketball, football, and others. Which do many as a gateway to college scholarships use. Next blog I will bring more information on how this budget breakdown affects sports.

Negative Spaces by Robert Jenkins

Posted by Robert Jenkins in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 1:14 pm
Negative Spacing is when the picture is made based on the shape that  is created from the parts of paper that is not shaded. You can also say it is created based on the contrast of two colors.

The way that I created Negative space with my cut out is by first cutting my print out of the tree while on of the brown piece of construction paper. Then used the space created from the cut  out of  white paper i glued it on as place in the picture below.

EXPLAIN THE PROJECT - from where we started drawing boxes on the paper
EXPLAIN THE PROCESS YOU USED TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT
WHAT WAS EASY TO LEARN?
WHAT WAS HARD TO LEARN?

1.We started off by  turning 2d figures into 3d shapes through perpespctive.
2The process was to first start off with a box and find the mid-point to be your vanish point. Then you must count the number of tiles on the ceiling and make lines form the vanish point back to show ceiling tiles den last begin to add the details of the room.
3.The easiest thing to do was making the ceiling.
4.The hardest thing was to make straight lines and find vanishing point.

Somebodies Art that i found interesting was Sean Force's.I  found it interesting how he had so much detail and the way he separated each different object.

Now i will teach you how to describe the weather. This is a good task to use for  a good life tool and also could be used in the workplace if you are a  weather forcastor.
  • The way that you ask someone "How's the weather?" is to say ¿Qué tiempo hace? Which literally means "what's the weather like?".
  • Now that you know how to ask about the weather now you need to describe weather. To describe weather you say "Hace" followed by any these descriptions.

How to Ask someone for the time?

First we will teach you how to ask for or tell the time. This is important to real life cause if you do not have a clock or watch at your disposal you will need to ask someone for the time and this tutorial will show you how to.

  • Their are three ways to ask. (What time is it?) You can ask by saying "Qué hora es?", "Qué hora son?", or Qué hora tiene. Any of these will be find to use anytime you ask for the time.
  • Now that you know how to ask for the time i will now tell you how to tell time.If someone says" Qué hora es? "You can by saying Es la una if ita one o'clock or Son las... for any other number between dose and doce. Also to say  the number of minutes you must use y unless it between 45 and 59 mintues you must use menos. For example to say 1:15 you say "Es la una y cuartro" or you could say "Es la una y quince". But to say 5:45 you say "Son las cinco menos cuatro" or "Son las cinco menos quince."
  • A way you could this in really life is by  asking someone in your school hallway for the time.

Talking to Adults vs. Children

Tú is for non- adults
Usted is for Adults
This is usefull for parents and children it shows class. When you are speaking to an adult and say (y usted ) that is formal, but when you are speaking to your friend you say (y tú) each is saying (and you) but one is formal and ones informal.

Singing the Alphabet

A: ah, B: beh, C: seh, CH: cheh, D: deh, E: eh, F: efeh, G: heh, H: ah-cheh, I: eee, J: ho-ta, K: ka, L: eleh, LL: elleh, M: emeh, N: eneh, Ñ: eneyeh, O: oh, P: peh, Q: cooooo, R: ereh, S: eseh, T: teh, U: ooo, V: veh, W: dobleh veh, X: Eh-quis, Y: eee gree-eh-gah, Z: zetah

Make every letter a short letter not in size but in sound. Every y is an high e. Every ll is a y. All J's are h's. Instead of saying Q its coooo. Its not W is Dobleh veh Like a double v. X is Eh- quis its like spelling x with a uis on the end. Z is Zetah remember the z its the only one that starts with z.

(El Tiempo) Weather

Now i will teach you how to describe the weather. This is a good task to use for  a good life tool and also could be used in the workplace if you are a  weather forcastor.

Los Días de la Semana ( Days of the Week)

Today I would teach you how to say the days of the week and how to ask and tell someone the day.The reason  you should learn this is because knowing the days of the week for purpose such as scheduling meetings or events or just to have common knowledge of the day you are living.

  • Before i can teach you how to ask or tell someone the date you must first learn how to pronounce each day.For example Monday=lunes, Tuesday=martes, Wednesday= miercoles,Thursday=jueves, Friday=Viernes, Saturday=sábado, and Sunday=domingo. Also you must never capitalize the days of the week.
  • The way that you ask" What day it is?" or the literal translation of  "What day is today?" is by say "¿Qué dis es hoy?". But the way you would respond is by say "Es"then the day.For example if its Tuesday you would response " Es martes"
  • A way you could use this skill in life is singing the Days of the Week Song.
