Dejah Harley Capstone

Posted by Dejah Harley in Capstone - Miles - Wed on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 8:34 pm

Name: Dejah Harley

Mentor: Alexa Dunn - She was a former writer for a very popular magazine. I wanted someone who would be able to assist me with the feel of my blog and making sure it overall looked presentable.

Summary: My capstone is a blog, SincerelyDejah.com, where I can show my ideas, opinion, things I’ve learned, and tips on skincare, haircare, and lifestyle related things.

Abstract: For my capstone I decided to create a blog related to skincare, haircare, and lifestyle things. I want to be a dermatologist so that’s where the skincare aspect of my blog comes into play. While learning about skincare, I also learned about haircare. Originally I thought the blog would only be skincare and haircare related, but I found myself also really enjoying writing about lifestyle too. To me, my blog is a reflection of everything I am curious or have any thoughts about. Throughout this year it has turned into a place where I can really share my ideas and what I’ve learned to help others. That was the goal from the beginning. My blog has has been a very useful tool in sparking conversations with different people about topics that I love.  I plan on continuing my blog throughout college and using it as a possible way to network with people as I have been.

Annotated Bibliography

"3 Rules To Smart Business Card Etiquette | CAREEREALISM." 2009. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.careerealism.com/3-rules-to-smart-business-card-etiquette/>

After getting business cards, I realized that I didn’t actually know how to use them. I hadn’t spoken with any professionals about the steps you take after getting the business cards. My initial plan was just to walk around the city and see how many people I can hand the cards to. This website helped me change that. It mentioned that when you do this, the likely hood of the person actually reading the card is slim to none, let a lone them actually checking out your website. Instead, it recommends that you spark a conversation with someone and give your card to them at the end of the conversation once you see that they are a bit more interested.

"Beautycrush." 2012. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.beautycrush.co.uk/>

There are many people that inspired me to decide to do this blog. Sammi from beautycrush.co.uk has been one of those people. I have watched her for the past few years and continue to look through her blog. She is always professional. I also like the simplistic layout of her blog and really kept that in mind when creating my blog. It was just a lot easier this way to see a model for something that I could want to see.

Belle Beth Cooper. "16 Top Tips from Blogging Experts for Beginners - The Buffer Blog." 2013. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://blog.bufferapp.com/blogging-advice-for-beginners-from-16-experts>

The first idea that this blog shows me has been a great addition to my blog. The key to success with any blog is to make sure that the readers and viewers also enjoy. This website recommends that you make sure you listen to the audience and get their response. I made a google form that is linked on my blog that helps me keep track of feedback. I have gotten some great suggestions through this and new ideas for videos. I also noticed a spark in views after I began doing this.

"Custom Business Cards | Staples®." 2009. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.staples.com/Custom-Business-Cards/cat_CL142384>

I spoke with the dermatologist that inspired me to get into the field. He was saying that one of the hardest things about the trade is getting your name out there. By being younger than most people, it is very hard for me to make sure that people take me seriously. Also, my name isn’t something that people just know, it isn’t a common or well known name. The reason why I made the blog was to kind of get my food in the door. However, he recommended that I make business cards to make myself look more professional to others. This helped out a lot with getting different age groups to look at my blog and videos.

"Essie Button." 2012. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.essiebutton.com/>

Similarly to beautycrush, Estee from essibutton.com has influenced my blog content a lot as well. The design of her blog is also incredibly simplistic but her content especially is amazing. I make a point to come up with as many ideas for my blog as possible but when i get stuck on a new type of video to do I check out her blog for some inspiration regarding future posts. Some of the posts on her blog such as “Drugstore Favorites” or “ Monthly Hits and Misses” are things I plan on doing within my blog. They are things that I personally like watching and feel that other people will enjoy as well. I also make sure to mention her if I get an idea from her.

"How to Distribute Business Cards: 6 Steps (with Pictures) - wikiHow." 2010. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.wikihow.com/Distribute-Business-Cards>

This was another site that helped me realize how to truly distribute business cards. One thing about this side is that it gets edited! They update the information frequently if they think of new tips for it so I constantly look back on this site for ways to improve my technique of distributing business cards. This site has given me ideas such as writing on the back of the business card to give it more of a personal touch. For each card I have been writing a DIY recipe or quick tip and people have been responding well to it so far.

"How to use the Canon t3i Rebel (600d) - YouTube." 2011. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH7PW2h8uA4>

I got some feedback after the first few month of creating my blog about the quality. The person was saying that they enjoyed the quality but to get more people to watch, they would recommend that I get a better camera. I took that advice to heart and was able to upgrade to the canon rebel t3i for my birthday. I had had a smaller dslr before so i understood the basics but this camera was a lot more complicated because it offered a lot more. This video helped a lot with understanding the basic buttons and things you use every time you work with the camera.

"The Skin Cancer Foundation - SkinCancer.org." 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.skincancer.org/>

I am very passionate about spreading awareness about skincancer. I constantly check the skin cancer foundation site for more information about research that is being done and things to that nature. This also helped me to realize that my blog isn’t just about acne or eczema but about spreading awareness for something as serious as skin cancer. I am doing a series on sunscreen and homemade natural products become of the dangers of skin cancer.

Treat, James R. “Personal Email.” Email. 23 Jan 2014.

This source was my Dermatologist. He was the person that inspired me to get into the field. I started emailing him at the beginning of January. He has helped me develop some things that I wanted to showcase in my blog. He has also given me advice on the field and how to market yourself. I have made business cards because of our conversations. He also emailed me about things to do in regards to things to do in my undergraduate years.

"WordPress.com - Get a Free Blog Here." 2004. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://wordpress.com/>

Wordpress is a blogging site. I have found other blogs for inspiration through this site but I also have my actual website through this blog. It is very easy to use and get adjusted to. I also was able buy my domain name through this website so that I didn’t have to worry about the long name. It is very affordable and provides wonderful free options for different website layouts. Also, I would like to make my own website from scratch and this is one of the few sites where I would be able to code directly onto the site without going through a lot of trouble with a domain name and such.

"YouTube." 2005. 29 Jan. 2014 <http://www.youtube.com/>.

While my goal with my capstone was to have a blog so that every post I did didn’t have to be about the same thing or a video, I still ended up using youtube as another main outlet that I had to design. Uploading movies directly to Wordpress can be extremely difficult so I just started using youtube as my way to upload videos. The people on youtube have given me a lot of inspiration. Also, more people have been able to find out about my blog have been through this site. I am able to target different types of learning audiences.

Global Fiction - Final Product "Westernization and Class Division in India"

Posted by Dejah Harley in Globalization - Block - D on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 9:40 pm
In Globalization I read the book Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo. It looked into the life of residents in an Indian slum. This book really speaks on the level of corruption within that country. After reading that book I watched the film Satyagraha. I wanted to look deeper into the amount of corruption in India and how it is depicted in regular Bollywood films. Within the film you get to see how corrupt the government truly is in India but also the huge division between social classes. One of the main characters was constantly chasing this “western” dream of constant money and luxury.  Below is an info-graphic that I created on westernization and what it has done to the division of classes in India.

Vote For A Voice

Posted by Dejah Harley in American Government - Block - D on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 1:23 pm
We decided to create a poster that represents the negative outcome of not voting. Many people in today's society complain about what the government is doing. However, when you don't vote, you take away your voice. All that complaining means nothing. With that in mind, research, discover, vote.

Thank You, Enjoy.

Process Paper:

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 10:51 am

The moment I read who was in my group I was excited. Everyone in my group works very well together. We understood each other and never lost our temper. The day after got out projects, Ms. Pahomov told us to write down our strengths and weaknesses and share them with the group. The strength that I shared was that I do all my work early. The other people in my group are the same way and we connected on that. We all have worked in terrible groups before. This lead us to our weakness. Most of us said that we tend to just do all of the work. Doing all the work yourself and knowing that it correct is easier than trusting others to do your work. That was something that we all had to work on.

When we were dividing the work we tried to make it as even as possible. We eventually came to the conclusion that we were all going to do anything together and truly collaborate. This was a big step for us, individually, within doing group work. We all stepped out of our comfort zone and trusted each other. This helped us to grow as a group.

With the actual project, we decided to make a blogger because we could track the traffic that we got on the blog. We also created a QR code. We put that QR code everywhere. Above the QR code we had the phrase “ Free Money! Scan Me! Although it is technically false advertising we got more views this way. ALso, I followed up with some of the people who viewed the blog. Our goal with this project was to change the way teenagers view homeless people and homelessness. One of the viewers on the blog told me that she had a new perspective. She doesn’t just think of homeless people as addicts but as people who don’t have the money to support themselves. Knowing that we changed the mindset of at least one person was the greatest reward.

Brown, Officer. Personal Interview. 14 02 2013.

For my human stakeholder I chose to interview a police officer. Officer Brown works with the 6th district. The interview is influential because I thought she was going to be more opinionated. She just agreed with the curfew and Mayor Nutter’s vision. She also said that the parents need to be held accountable because their children affects the community. This turned our project in a different direction. We asked ourselves “What happens to the teenagers without parents”. This source is reliable because it is an interview with a person who is directly involved.

"Curfews may do little to stop flash mobs." TheInquirer. n. page. Web. 15 Feb. 2013. <http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq_ed_board/Curfews-may-do-little-to-stop-flash-mobs.html>.

I found this article shortly after reading the article about Mayor Nutter’s speech I wanted to know how the people of Philadelphia felt about this. I was searching the web and found this article. This source is influential for one specific quote. “Not just teens, but others, didn’t follow Nutter’s reasoning at Mount Carmel Baptist Church when he said mob violence by black teens reflects badly on all African Americans” is a quote from the article. I then found myself wondering if a leader is leading others, how can they be a leader if people don’t follow? Why is that? This source is reliable because it is from a news article from a respectable publication.

"Flash mob situation 'still shaky,' says top cop Ramsey."Philly.com. The Inquirer, n. d. Web. Web. 15 Feb. 2013. <http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq_ed_board/Flash-mob-situation-still-shaky-says-top-cop-Ramsey.html>.

I did interview a cop but I wanted to get the opinion of Charles Ramsey because he is the Police Commissioner. When listening to this interview he was basically saying that same things that the police officer said. He thinks that this is all for the safety of teenagers in philadelphia and that parents should learn to control their kids. This source is reliable because it is a recording of him talking and speaking his opinions and the opinions of the police department.

Newall, Mike, Allison Steele, and Hill Miriam . "Teen mob attacks Seeking loot and attention."TheInquirer. n. page. Web. 15 Feb. 2013. <http://articles.philly.com/2011-08-07/news/29861514_1_attacks-three-teens-juvenile-crime>.

This source explains the details of the July 29, 2011 flash mob that influenced the curfew in philadelphia. Leslie Gomez, an officer said “"Typically, when doing juvenile crime you can see a reason for an attack. There's an aggression, there's a slight, something that sets someone off. These were completely vicious and random attacks on strangers, one after the other after the other." This source is interesting because you can see how some teenagers just do crazy things. The reason for the curfew came about because the leaders in the city thought that this would help the violence. This source is reliable because it is from a news article and has quotes from a police officer.

Simmon, Daraan. "Mayor blasts violent flash mobs."TheInquirer. n. page. Web. 15 Feb. 2013. <http://articles.philly.com/2011-08-07/news/29861647_1_young-people-flash-mobs-immaculate-conception>.

When reading this article I was shocked. Mayor Nutter speaks his mind but he is using no filter. Some of the things he was saying were a bit offensive to the parent. “You need to get hold of your kids before we have to” was one of those offensive things. It sounds as though he is saying that it starts in the home, which is true but that isn’t the only reason kids act this way. He also said some things about teenagers being a “human atm”. He made this speech in his local church. There was so much religious opinion in this speech. I feel that that was also wrong to bring religion into it. I feel that his opinions and views on how this city should work is different from the majority of this city and the future of this city; the young adults and teenagers. Once again this source is reliable because it is from a respectable website and has quotes from the person involved, Mayor Nutter.

Steele, Allison, and Sean Carlin. "Two teens shot inside train along SEPTA’s Broad Street Line."TheInquirer. n. page. Web. 15 Feb. 2013. <http://articles.philly.com/2012-09-20/news/33953417_1_gratz-student-mastery-charter-schools-teenage-students>.

This article talks about teen shootings. Teen shootings is just another way that people are unsafe. People get into arguments and things of that nature. Although this shooting took place earlier in the day, most instances occur late at night. This shooting just goes to show how young people act. It was actually mentioned on a the same website under a category titles “more stories”.  This also is interesting because this shooting happened in north Philly but mayor nutter made the curfew more stick around university city, center city, and south street. This source is reliable because it comes from a respectable newspaper company.

Dejah Harley & Tamatha Lancaster "Create" Artist Statement

Posted by Dejah Harley in Physics - Echols on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 9:46 pm
In physics class, we discussed what a circuit was and the different types of circuits that there were. We learned of the differences between parallel and series circuits, which one is better in certain situations, and the formulas to measure certain things within the circuit. These things are the resistance, current, voltage, voltage drop, and power. These formula was Ohms Law and the Power formula. After learning this, we were asked to make a circuit within a sculpture that represent us. We chosed to make a circuit while sculpting something artistic because it represents our passions. With that in mind, we spelled the word “create” with wire while having lightbulbs in between sticking out of the canvas. These light bulbs light up above the circuit, while the actual circuit lies on the back of the canvas. Our circuit represents the one thing that we both love to do, create.

Humanities Portfolio 2012

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 2 - Block on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 5:00 pm

In the beginning of the year, I walked into Mr. Block’s English and History classroom unaware of the amazing things that I would get to experience. This class changed my mindset about many things. I have had so many wonderful opportunities in this year. The top three things that I have learned this year is that hard work really does pay off, it’s okay to make mistakes, and there is art in everything. I really got to experience hard work and determination in this class. Along the way I made some mistakes. However, I got through them and found out that it would be all right. That is just a part of growing up. Then, I learned to see the art in some things that I would normally overlook. Mr. Block’s English and History class is a place where I grew as a person.

I had never experienced the workload that I did in Mr. Block’s class before this year. I have high expectations and many goals in life. I plan on doing a lot with my life. I always say, “Make your life something that you will be proud of” (Roles, Rules, and Responsibilities Poem).  I wrote in the first poem for the year “Is it true that you can do anything you put your mind to”(Theme for English B remake). My work ethic has grown throughout this entire year. Mr. Block has really taught me that hard work pays off.

With the large workload, I have learned that it is okay to make mistakes at times. While I was learning this we had to write poems for our poetry unit. We made an Ode to anything we wanted. I made my Ode to Erasers. I stated in that poem, “Erase the mistake you make”(Ode to Erasers). Later on in the year, after learning this valuable lesson, I wrote a thesis paper. I stated in that paper, “Erasing the past is key to finding the freedom that one seeks; but managing the past gives one the strength to move forward and find a new way of being free (History Thesis Paper).

After I learned to calm down and understand that mistakes are made all the time, I learned to enjoy the art in everything. We did many projects involving art in Mr. Block’s class. The first project that we ever did was describing a picture. I decided to write about a picture of my family taken by me in Jamaica. At the end of the essay I wrote, “ I sat in front of the resort with one eye close and a camera up to the other. I realize what a beautiful moment with my family this was. And then, I took the picture”(Descriptive Picture Essay). This really taught me to see the art in something so minuscule that I would normally overlook.  This lesson came back to be when we danced for the Philadelphia Art in the Open Festival. I states in my reflection, “There were poles and walls that we thought we could work with” (Art in the Open Final Thought). With this project, I really learned the value of art.

It is amazing how you can walk into something so blindly and come out with amazing experiences. Mr. Block’s class has taught me many things that I will use throughout my life. This year leaves me thinking of the amazing experiences that I have to come.

Q4-Clouds and Moon

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 2:53 pm

For the fourth and final two hour project, I decided to paint clouds with the moon above. I had the intentions of just painting clouds. However, when I was on YouTube learning how to paint clouds, I came across the video of someone painting clouds with the moon above. I loved the way that theirs came out. I wanted to see if I could do it myself. Therefore, I did. I liked the way that it turned out in the end. Overall, I was pleased with the work that I did. Below if a picture of the end result. Enjoy!

Q4- Tree Painting

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 2:44 pm

The third project that I decided to do was a painting of a tree. This project was very hard for me. I was new to painting and had no idea how to paint a tree. However, I did a practice painting of the tree on a piece of paper before doing it on the canvas. Then, I did it on a relatively big canvas. Overall, I am extremely pleased by the way that it came out. Below is a picture of the finished product. Enjoy!

Q4-Crayon Melting

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 2:38 pm
The second project that I decided to do was crayon melting. I saw a picture of crayon melting online and I thought it looked amazing. I decided to recreate it. I decided to draw a man sideways under an umbrella with the melted crayons as the rain. This project took a lot of energy and focus. Also, it was my first time ever doing something like this. Therefore, I filmed it and decided to make a tutorial on how I did it. Overall, I love the way that it turned out. Here is a link to the video describing how I did it. Below is a picture of how it turned out. Enjoy!

Q4- Color Wheel (Square)

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 2:24 pm
I decided to make a color wheel as my first project for this quarter. Instead of a wheel, I used a square piece of paper. I did not know what colors I wanted to use at first. However, I ended up using 4 colors that were in the same color family. Because I did not know how I wanted to create it, I ended up filming everything. That way, I can make a final video describing how I did it overall. I like how it came out overall. I also love the way the video turned out. Here is a link to the video describing and showing how I did this color wheel (Square). Enjoy!

Dejah Harley Podcast with Tamatha Lancaster

Posted by Dejah Harley in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 12:05 pm
My podcast is on moodle. It has me answering the questions in the beginning and Tamatha answering the questions in the end. I think I did a good job with my conjugations and pronunciation of the words. I had trouble understanding how I should say other words because I never heard of them before. If I were to do it differently, I would do an intro, outro, and make a script.

Blogs:

New York Trip

In January I went to New York with my mom and god-mom. Before the year started I wanted to take pictures of all the big events that I have this year. I want to be able to look back and remember these things. Therefore, I took pictures of the architecture in New York along with random things I saw and moments in my life. I began experimenting with lighting to get good pictures even when it was really dark outside.

The only things that were challenging to me were playing around with my camera. To see all of the cool things and effects I was able to do. This video is just my journey in New York throughout those few days. Most of the pictures look similar in quality. The cool thing that I learned was you can make pictures look really similar even if they are in completely different effects. Enjoy this video.

Here is a link.

Lomography

For Christmas I got a lomography camera. It is the Diana f+. It was originally made in the 50s/60s and sold as a toy camera. It was only sold for one dollar. However, the quality of the photos caused a uniqueness that photographers loved. Thats the reason why I love this camera. It has a greenish undertone to the pictures making it look like it is almost in a comic book effect.

I encountered a lot of problems when doing this project. It actually was not taking the pictures it was finding a good place to get them developed. This camera takes film the same way that disposable cameras do. Therefore I went to the same places to get them developed such as Rite Aid , Walgreens, and CVS. Each place that I went to, they ruined my pictures. I then went to a professional shop and they were able to retrieve a few photos from one roll of film that cvs was going to ruin. Below is a link to the video with the few pictures I have from taking pictures on 6 rolls of film. Overall, it was a good experience, but make sure you research every aspect of it a lot before you begin.

Here is a link.

Eye

With this project, I drew a picture of an eye. It is the first picture below. I did not intend to paint an eye when I began painting. I drew a circle to start off with and then I accidentally had a flat top on the top of the circle. Then, I decided I was going to turn it into an eye to even cover up that mistake. After I drew the outline of the rest of the eye to make sure I didn't make anymore mistakes, I gathered paint and began to paint it. After, I added the final touches like the eyebrow and eyelashes. And the background is the skin tone of a person that I tried to create.

Two point perspective

With  this project, I drew a picture of my name in block letters using two point perspective. I drew a horizon line and at each end of the line I point a dot to symbolize the vanishing point. Then, I drew a line from this vanishing point as the outline. It should look like a sideways diamond. Then I drew letters within the diamond to form my name but still forming two point perspective. It was really challenging making the letters go into two point perspective. The picture that I drew for the first time is the second picture below.

Q3-Español Proyecto

Posted by Dejah Harley in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 12:10 pm

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why?

The Assignment was to make a website to help the experience of a spanish speaking person coming to Philadelphia. We had to include places, event, types of food, and ways that the culture is different in Philadelphia.

What did you learn from doing this project?

I learned about some Philadelphia event that I have never even heard of. I also learned where some things were in Philadelphia that I never saw before.

How do you feel about your final product?

I think that overall the project worked out okay. The website turned out to look very cool.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

If I could do this project all over again, I would plan out exactly what I wanted to say for each topic before I just started writing it all in spanish.

Q2- Relationship Questions and Answers ft. Freshman

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:18 am

This project required me to take a topic and ask students about it. I asked the upperclassman at Science Leadership Academy the questions that I should ask the freshman at Science Leadership Academy. Once I found out what questions I wanted to ask, I asked 6 different freshmen for all four of the videos and one senior for one of the videos. I filmed this video in the same space so that the background in this video is constant. Also, the videos have the same overall flow. Below is a list of the questions I used with a link to the post that contains the videos.

Questions:

1.     How do you think women should be treated in a relationship?

2.     What would you do if someone hit you/ How do you feel about being hit?

3.     What are your views on sex?

4.     How do you feel about relationships in High school?

Q2- Internet Sculpture

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:00 am

This Project required me to take a photo from the Internet and try to recreate it but keep a certain aspect about it. This picture, the first picture below this post, shows a girl standing in front of birds on a clothesline attached using clothespins. The picture below is a recreation of the picture above. The aspect of the picture that remains the same is that the birds are secured on the clothesline using a Clothespin. Also, my recreation still has a vintage and rustic feel to it. The color of the birds is the true color in this as it is in the picture that I got from the Internet.  However, I did take out the person standing in the picture that I got from the Internet. I wanted the birds to really stand out.

The remaking of the picture from the internet took a lot of time. First, I dyed clothespins different colors and let it dry over night. Then, I cut square sheets of different color construction paper and made origami swans. Next, I used hemp rope as a Clothesline and tied it to the tree in my front yard. Then, I tied hemp rope around the neck of the origami swans. Then, I attached the swans to the tree using the dyed clothespins.  Overall, this project was a great learning experience.

Language Autobiography- "I am me" by Dejah Harley

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 2 - Block on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 1:59 pm
I. Introduction/ Reflection:
Language has had a very important impact on my life. It has changed me for the better. The purpose of this “language autobiography” was to show how language truly does affect us in one way or another. My struggles while making this language autobiography were figuring out exactly what I wanted to portray in it. However, ended up coming to the conclusion that I wanted it to portray how much language could affect someone in an emotional way. Language has affected me. If you would like to see how, read my language autobiography below.

II. Language Autobiography

Being who people want you to be, who you think you are, and who you are, are completely different things. Being who you are means expressing yourself, being the person you want to be, and doing the things you want to do.  Being who you think you are means that you are unsure of who you are and you try to be yourself. However, yourself, your personality is being compromised by what people want you to be. Being who people want you to be means that you are completely compromising your true desires to please the people around you. Ultimately I have experienced all these things. The pattern of identity is different for everyone. Some people are themselves at one point of their lives and change into the way people want them to be. Some people start off as who people want them to be and change into who they truly are. And some people go back and forth between the three levels. I was who people wanted me to be, who I think I was, and now I am Dejah.

It all started with the way that I talk and where I come from. I am from Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My family that lives in Philadelphia lives and or grew up in the more dangerous neighborhoods. They talk very differently than I do. We all have the similar Philadelphia accent of saying water ad “wader”. However, their grammar and way of speaking is more southern and old than mine is. They say that I talk “white” because I talk properly.

My mother and father are the entertainers of our family. We have cookouts all the time. We held one in the summer of 2008, the summer before I switched schools, and the entire family was there. Everyone sat on chairs facing tables on the lawn. My little cousins were running around everywhere and playing in a blow up pool on the sidewalk. I was sitting on my stairs waiting for one of the older women to ask me to get them a glass of water or come up to me and say “ OH MY GOSH SWEETIE! YOU GOT SO BIG! How ya doin?”. And I would answer with the same response, “I’m fine”. I didn’t say this because I couldn’t hold a conversation with someone in my family but more so because the way I talk offended them.

If I were to have a conversation with one of my aunts they would either tell my dad how well I speak or that I talk like I think that I am better than they are. I do not think that at all. I talk with proper grammar because that is the way that I was taught to talk in school. I guess I talk the way that they feel like they are being talked down to. They never want to talk to me because of this. Therefore, I get talked about and now have the nickname Oreo, black on the outside white on the inside. Instead of fighting it and being who I wanted to be, I gave in and compromised to my family. I don’t talk improperly I just don’t talk at all. This is my way of being who they want me to be because it is easier than being myself.

Things started to change when I changed schools in seventh grade. At my old school I was judged for talking the way I did because I went to an all African American school. I looked at this new school as a chance to start over in a new place where people don’t know me and can’t make any judgments. The school I went to was more diverse so it was better. I was still talked about because of the way that I talked. However, I started changing the way I dressed and acted. The way I dressed changed because I would buy anything I thought was pretty but nothing that went together. I owned this look because I thought it was “me”. People started talking about the way that I dressed and I thought I had to gain friends back so I started to be a little bit different to earn respect from the popular people. I was so set on who I was at this time. I thought this was just the way that I am going to be for years. In this case, I was being who I though I was. I was acting slightly in the way I wanted because, for years, I was not able to be the person that I wanted to be. However, the way I was acting was not fully “me”. My way of thinking was being compromised by the way people wanted me to be.

Up until Fall of 2011, I was not fully acting myself. Now I am one hundred percent Dejah. Although some people in my family hate vintage clothing, I love it. I love thrift store shopping and knowing that there is an unknown story behind every piece of clothing. I dress the way I want to dress. I do my hair the way I want it to look. I care about people feeling and try to be as nice as possible. However, I do not let that impact my life to the point where I am completely unhappy. Everyone has changed throughout his or her life. But at this point in mine, I am “me”. I am not who people want me to be. I am not who I think I am. I am Dejah and will forever be Dejah.

* I made sure to use a good amount of the vocabulary
* I was not always focused. Also, my imovie kept on freezing so it was hard to get it done.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

I would have planned from the beginning a schedule for the second week along with more outfits that I would do. I would keep the design the same.

How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?
I collaborate with my peers by editing their projects and asking them to edit mine. I researched some words that I did not know. I had a neat presentation because it was on imovie.

What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?

I learned how to say “this” “that” and “I like my outfit”.

What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?

I changed my grammar. I had many issues.

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?

I would have took more pictures and made sure my pronunciation was better.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

Yes and no. I liked it because it was an interesting topic and it was fun recording for it. I did not like the fact that you had to use a lot of outfits for the video to be long.

Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?

No.

Q2-Stop Motions

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 9:00 am
The first three projects for the quarter were stop motions. A stop motion is basically when you take pictures to make a video. You can do this by taking pictures of things in progress.
With my first two stop motions I focused on the things that we do with our hands. The first things that came to mind was food and water. Therefore, I took one picture at the beginning and moved my hand 2 centimeters closer to the Reese's™ cup like I was trying to eat and took a picture. I keep doing this every two centimeters until I took a bite of  the Reese's™ cup. Another part of this stop motion was my friend drinking a bottle of water. The same concept of taking the pictures that was applied to me biting the Reese's™ cup was applied to her reaching for her water bottle and drink it. After taking all those picture i uploaded all of them from my camera to iMovie. I Then, make each picture fit the screen and take up only .2 seconds of the video. This was able to make it so that it would look as if it was a video playing. Sadly this video cannot be uploaded. However, I uploded the video to my blogger account. Here is the post.
With my third stop motion I took the project a step further by making everyone who agreed to help do a dance. The dance I chose for them to learn was the robot. It was simple and I knew the perfect song that I would play in the background of the video. The same concept used to make the last stop motions was applied to this one. The only thing different was that I edited the video to make it seem like it was more of a music video or a trailer for a song. The song playing in the background is "D.A.N.C.E." by Justice. The video is shown beneath this post.
The things that i learned from doing this project are that it is important to keep the same frame or dimensions of the picture to make it seem like the video has more of a flow. I problem that I had while making this project is that you have to take many pictures for the video to be long. Within the second video, I took 140 pictures at it is less than a minute long. Overall, I had a good time doing this project.

Art Within Bodies

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 1:47 pm

This project required me to take photos of five different people. These photos were taken in the same position and around the same place. By doing this, I ensured that there was no difference between the pictures that would drastically affect the difference in body structure. All of the pictures were in taken in a natural and relaxed position. After taking all those pictures, I went into Photoshop and cut the photos in fourths. The fourths consisted of head, shoulders to waist, waist to ankle, and ankle to end of shoe. My intentions were to put a persons head on top of another persons shoulders on top of another persons legs with someone else’s feet. However, I kept the heads next to each other at the top of the page, and spread the rest of the parts of the people throughout the rest of this page.

Within this project, I focused on what I wanted to express through my art. I wanted to convey the different parts of people and how they can be looked at separately and more in depth. I wanted to show why certain parts of the body are a certain way on certain people. The final project conveys how people are meant to have certain features about themselves. If they are not on their own bodies than they should just be in space.

How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?

Throughout this project I did use the five SLA core values. Inquiry is the act of asking for information. Throughout this project I went to my peers and asked for certain words. Researching is the act of investigation. I investigated old photos from the past. Collaboration is the act of working with someone to create something. While peer editing, I did collaborate with my peers. I am presenting my project through imovie. It is neatly edited and done.  I have and continue to reflect on the work that I have done.

What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?

I learned how to use the pretérito tense. I also learned new words just as “meido” and phrases such as “we left”.

What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?

I made a lot of agreement and grammatical errors. Those were the main things that I had to change. As for sentence structure, it remained mainly the same.

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?

I would have used more pictures. I don’t have many pictures. However, I would have spent more time figuring out how to work with pictures.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

I enjoyed this project because it allowed me to look back on past summers and think of all the things that I have actually done. Also, this project allowed me to use imovie. Editing this project was fun.

Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?

I do not have any suggestions for you if you do the same project next school year.

My Two goals

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 2 - Block on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Joy was seen in my smile, but nervousness was shown in my eyes. I was happy that it was a new school year. It was my sophomore year. I have three goals and one of them is to get rid of my clumsiness habit. I trip and stumble all the time. I have tried to be more conscious of my surroundings but it doesn’t seem to help. I feel like I am cursed. Whenever I injure myself it is always on a day where something bad is going to happen or already did. I know that from then on, I am just going to have bad luck that day. Can I break free from this curse? Can I?

I hear my grandmother calling my name, DEJAH DEJAH! I overlook it. Its 6:00 in the morning and I can’t get out of bed. She comes back half an hour later and shakes me saying, “WAKE UP”! I can barely see her face and I attempt to open my eyes. My eyelids felt heavy and dropped back down. Tiredness got the best of me. I was finally able to overcome it. After I did, I was able to get dressed, brush my teeth, do my hair, and eat breakfast in 30 minutes.  Mental stability was key in this process. My day began to pick up and I THOUGHT it was going well. I was wrong.

As my grandmother was leaving our driveway, I asked her if I could go to Dunkin Donuts to get a hot chocolate. After getting back inside the car I let the hot chocolate cool in one of the cup holders. My grandmother went to start the car and nothing happened. The engine light was flashing. We were stranded for 20 minutes until we found a cab to take us back to the house to get my mothers car. It was a good thing that she was out of town. I prayed and hoped that today wouldn’t be a bad day.

There was so much traffic. It made the car ride to school tedious. I tripped twice while in school. In each class I received homework to put in my day planner. Joy was visible by the smile on my face when I found out that school ended early.  I took the bus home.

I have been stumbling through my life. Literally. My friends and family call me clumsy or accident-prone all the time. When I was younger I never felt like a sturdy walker or the most athletic person. Almost every sport that I have tried to do I have injured myself in some way, shape, or form. The only two sports that I succeeded in were tennis and volleyball. That is only because my father is a tennis instructor and my mother used to play volleyball. They both helped me. However, there are still so many injuries that happen on a daily basis.

When I got home, I went into my kitchen to make myself a quick snack. When I was cooking grease popped onto my face. I was startled. My arm flinched and I hit the handle of the pan. It went onto the island of the kitchen. I went into my dinning room to get some paper towels. Ironically, I slipped on some water. While I was falling I tried to catch myself by grabbing the dinning room table. However, I ended up actually knocking over a candle with a glass case onto the floor. I picked up all the glass pieces and try to get more paper towels to wipe up the mess that I made in the kitchen.

I was on my way back into the kitchen when a piece of glass went through my sock and into the ball of my foot. I limped into the kitchen to sit on a stool to try to get the large piece of glass out. I slowly tried to pull it out flinching from the pain. Then, the glass shattered and the tip was still in my foot.  It was a stinging sensation. Every time I would step, it felt like I was getting a needle in my foot.

The next day, the glass was still in my foot. However, I would walk and I could fill the glass going into my foot deeper and deeper. My brother had to tear into my skin and finally get a piece of glass out smaller than a pea. I am not really sure if all the glass is gone or if some is still in there because the sharp pain in my foot is still there. However, it might just be the pain from all the skin that had to be taken off my foot.

Having glass in my foot was less pain than when I spilled hot chocolate on myself. I opened the bag of coco powder packet and ripped the top flap off. I was so excited to make my hot chocolate that I sloppily poured the coco mix into the cup. I missed and 1/8 of the powder ended up next to the cup. I mixed the water and powder together to create a brown hot liquid. There was so much steam coming from it. I grabbed a paper towel and sat down. I wiped up the powder that I had spilled. However, I wiped too much and knocked the cup onto my left leg where my left hand also was. I was screaming at the top of my lungs “AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH”. Thankfully I had on a large sweat suit that absorbed most of the hot chocolate. However, the chocolate seeped though it enough to give me a second degree burn.

The people around me flinch whenever I fall. My friends sometimes giggle and I do the same. What am I supposed to do? All I can do is to just get up and walk it out. My family just ignores it. They know that I injure myself all the time. My brother just tells me to man up and my parents just let it go. I feel accident-prone. I can never change that because I can’t change me. I won’t change me. I am good at so many other things that just the athletics. Therefore, maybe I should only have two goals this year; to get straight A’s and scholarship money.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Dejah Harley in World History - Block on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 9:11 am
Intro Paragraph: Within this project, my goal was to show each characters opinions' and perspectives' about the Keystone XL pipeline. I spoke through the characters to express real emotion and the emotions that would be expected. For example, when writing from water's perspective, I was able to imagine some of the properties. This was possible by acting as if water were a man.

Monologues:

The Beginning to Change

Bill Mckibben walks to the podium

This is my first speech as an environmentalist. The white paper in my hand was folded into a square and had about one hundred fifty black words on it. It is shaking as if it was a table and my hand was an earthquake. I couldn’t help but think that this could be the beginning to our earth diminishing or it being saved.  The actual power is in the hands of President Obama but the people of the United States influences his decisions. I could influence theirs. After finally unfolding the paper, it looked as if the words were blurred. I couldn’t ready anything. This is just my imagination. Images of clear lakes and no pipeline signs were in front of me drawn onto cardboard in front of the white house. These people want change. I could be the voice of reason.  The nervousness left me.

I stood tall and said:

“It is the second largest pool of carbon on Earth. It is tar sands, which are oil sands. The main component of this oil would be bitumen. Bitumen is the most toxic form of petroleum, which is called tar. This is a form of crude oil. Last year alone, theses tar sands had 12 spills. This pipeline is predicted to go from Canada to Texas. What happens if another spill occurs and it goes into the ocean or another water supply area? Then what happens if we drink this water?”. “We have lost the battle for the last 10 years to for anything about greenhouse gasses. The process of refining this crude oil needs natural gas. In return, refining the tar sands oil apposed to regular conventional oil causes more greenhouse gas emissions. We shouldn’t use the pipeline. There are too many issues that could arise because of it. We have to take global warming seriously.” Finishing and feeling successful I folded my paper up and put it into the inside of my jacket pocket. The crowd cheered and clapped as I walked off the stage. This is the begging to change.

Future Leaders

Here I am, walking to another class full of students in the middle of the first quarter. My old class was a group of unwilling to learn students. They would sit in their chairs like zombies and say nothing. No one raised his or her hand. Instead they sat holding their phone underneath a desk texting someone across the room or writing notes about me and passing it to the person in front of them. My new room, 304, had my name carved into a wooden plate with gold lettering.  After opening the door, I was greeted with blank unwelcoming faces.

She grabs her lesson plan out of her purse

“My name is Mrs. Lou. Today we are going to be discussing the Tar Sands pipeline. In Alberta, Canada, there are Tar Sands. These sands produce toxic and thick oil. The United States is trying to refine and clean the oil so that we can use it in things such as cars. To do this, they are sending a pipeline from Canada to Texas. The problem with this idea is that the oil that would go through the pipeline is too thick. Therefore, it would have to be heated up as it was going through. That just makes us more prone for danger such as the oil leaking. Also the oil is too acidic to transport safely in the pipelines. The same kind of oil that was spilled into the Kalamazoo River last year has the same viscosity of the Tar sands oil. The oil sunk to the bottom of the river and is no longer retrievable”.

The kids in front of me are actually starting to pay attention. Instead of slouching in their seats they were sitting up straight. I could also tell that some of them were trying to raise their hand ad voice their opinions like leaders.

“ The pros of the pipeline would be that it could create jobs for Americans, give us more oil, and allow us not to rely on other countries for oil”. I ended. “ I can see that some of you would like to voice your opinions, write your name on the board in one of the categories, for or against”. The kids immediately got up. Most of them were standing in line to write their names on the left side, against. I am glad that they agree with me.

If you don’t, I will

My name is Niagara. My children Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior are the people I care most about. We have our own type of family flow. We understand each other’s problems. I travel around the continent to visit their houses all the time. We support each other because we are a family. I would never leave them in the dust.

The United States is planning on putting a pipeline from Canada to Texas. It’s supposedly going to carry this toxic and crude oil so that they could refine it. Politicians talk about how we are going to be okay because the pipe is not supposed to leak. Do they not remember what happened to my cousin Kalamazoo? His whole house was covered in oil because of an oil leak that was “not supposed to happen” but did about twelve times. Now, he has oil in his basement that he can’t get out. Do they not remember my cousin Gulf? Last year she has approximately 4.9 million barrels of crude oil spilt into her home. It didn’t just affect her, but it affected the animals that lived with her.

What happens if the oil from these pipes leaks out? This could immediately affect my son Superior and daughter Michigan. It could also affect the people who use this water to drink and put into bottles. Why would they do something like this? President Obama can make the decision to put my family at risk or protect us. Just in case, I have to call my family and tell them to brace themselves for the worst and hope for the best.

WHY NOT SAME SEX MARRAIGE!?!?!?!?!?!?

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:36 pm
I completely understand that there are people in the world who are going to argue against the title of this blog post. However, to me, it's just a rhetorical question. There are so many other things in the world , that are actually wrong, that those people can be spending their time on.

The United States has come so far over the years with same-sex marriage. Granted, there has been over a  half a million hate crimes for same - sex couples. Keep in consideration that there weren't that many people coming out in the 1920s, so that number of hate crimes was a lot.

There was a change that came for same-sex couples. In 1972, East Lansing, Michigan banned the discrimination against same sex couples.  However, with change, there are always going to be people against it.  Many people thought that it was a "threat" to the American way of life. Also, some Americans didn't want to have a gay airplane pilot, school teacher, or even doctor. However, when you think about it, we need those people. Why would you stop someone from helping you get to where you want to go, learn, or even cure your disease. WHY?

When you just sit there and ask yourself the question "WHY" , it is hard to think of an excuse. Any type of discrimination is wrong. There is a wide variety of people who are discriminated against on a daily basis. There are people that really take that seriously. There are people who take their own lives BECAUSE of it. But what I wan't you to do is just as yourself "WHY". You know the reasons why they are doing this. But why do most people want this for same-sex couples or anyone who is teased. These are the consequences. WHY? WHY? WHY and HOW can  people so cruel?

Gay rights moving faster than civil right?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 1:36 pm
From my last blog, I just finished telling you about how some people think of same sex marriage as a flaw. However, we all have flaws that we don't often wish to show. The Gay Rights movement is going quickly. Gay Rights activist are now getting their points made to the people in power to legalize same sex marriage.
I recently read an article called " A tipping point for Gay marriage". In the beginning a statement was made of a scenario where an client gets fired for having a very strong opinion. However, this was a true scenario when a client wanted to defend same sex marriage, however the law firm said that it wouldn't go against federal law, the constitution. This incident has Gay Rights activist speaking up louder than ever. The great thing that came out of this incident was that it reached to people in power. THAT WAS THE GOAL. People recognized that the law firm was wrong.
At the end of this article the statement was made "those turning points still have a ways to go. I certainly can see that day coming. Compared with the civil rights movement for African-Americans, the movement for gay rights has proceeded with a remarkable degree of speed." I am happy to see this statement. I think that when the Civil rights movement was going on , people were WAY more stubborn, for lack of a better word. The fact that the Gay Rights movement can be seen is remarkable. It is finally shown that they should have the same rights as everyone else.

LGBT Issues-- Talking about yourself: Do you share your feelings or "Flaws"?

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 2:43 pm
I am doing a project for English Class called "You and the World". In the world, people are treated differently for living. These people choose to live their lives freely. The U.S constitution says that every person should have the same rights. This would give each person the freedom to express themselves. If a single person can express themselves, without anyone saying anything, what gives that person the right to discriminate against another. The question being, do we really treat others the way we want to be treated.
The issue that I choose to discuss is Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgendered and Questioning, LGBTQ, issues in America. This topic interests me because I find it hard to understand how a person can point out the flaws in another but don't want their flaws to be shown. These people are so against LGBTQ people that they want to stop them from living the own lives. They want to stop them from being free and happy. They want to stop them from getting married and bully them constantly just because they are different.
I have done research among my peers, friends, and family that prove that most people do not like having their insecurities or secrets shown. Many teenagers in society are so afraid of their flaws that they keep them hidden with all of the power. However, when their flaws are actually shown, they get bullied and take hurt themselves to express their inner shame.
Every person has flaws. I think that is what makes us all unique. If we weren't different, how would we know the good from the bad? The people who I have spoken with that are a part of the LGBTQ community feel that their flaws is just being themselves. However, when they have the courage to show their "Flaw" to everyone, they get made fun of. They are being brave. This teasing can become too much and they take it out on themselves.
My next goal in my research study is to find out why people lie. Is it something that comes naturally or is it to purposefully hide their "flaws"?

Negative Space

Posted by Dejah Harley on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 1:26 pm
Negative space the area around an object within a certain frame. The object itself would be the positive space because there is a object that is there. The space where there is nothing is the negative space. It is just a background. Within my cut out, one side of the paper was positive and the other was negative. Within my stool drawing, the object was the positive space and the background was the negative space. Negative space helps an artist to see the actual shape and definition of an object. Negative Space brings out the drawing. It makes an object pop.

Perspective Drawing by Dejah Harley

Posted by Dejah Harley in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 1:47 pm

The project had a background to it. I had to draw two different things before I drew my final drawing. The first drawing was the perspective of drawings. We were learning how to draw boxes from a worm and bird's view. I drew a horizon line in the center of the page. The worm was at the bottom left of the page and the bird was at the upper right of the page. If I drew a box in the bottom left portion of the horizon line, it would be as if I was looking at the box from the bird's perspective. If I drew a box from the upper right portion of the horizon line, it would be as if I at the box from the worm's perspective. The second drawing that I did showed me how to pay attention to detail. Mrs. Hull told everyone in the class to take put their shoe and draw it. I sat the shoe in front of me and started drawing it paying attention to little details. These two drawing helped me greatly with the final drawing.

For the final drawing, I had to draw Mrs. Hull's room. We had to take perspective into play by using horizontal and orthogonal lines. I also had to pay attention to little details in her room. When I was drawing this, I split my work into for sections on the piece of paper. Each day I would work on a different section. This helped y workload. This was a hard project to complete because it required a lot of effort. However, the other drawing helped me to understand what I was doing a lot better.

Drawing I thought were well drawn:

Tamatha Lancaster's picture was very well drawn. It was realistic. She payed attention to little details. It was neatly done. When I was looking at it, I felt like I was in the room.

New and Old Slides

Posted by Dejah Harley in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 9:09 am

For the first slide, I was afraid to make things to close to each other or making the texts big. After I took another glance at the "Presentation Zen" website, I then realized that it was okay to make things big and close to each other. I also learned how to use the rule of the thirds, something that I didn't know how to use before. I focused on the rule of the thirds in my new slide. The Old slide out of the two is the first. The New slide is the second slide.

The New slide has a lot of properties from the "presentation zen" website. The texts on my Dr. Seuss quote is very large and easy to read. Also, in the first column when using the rule of the thirds is my picture and quote. Then, the second column contains the words "Dermatology is my life". That is also bold and large. That phrase is very simple and is self-explanatory. Finally, the third column had all of the dermatology products that I use.

Saludos ( Greetings)

Posted by Dejah Harley in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 11:14 pm

Below are a few lists of Greetings in Spanish translated to English. The Spanish word is on the left and the English translation is on the right.

(1). ¡Hola!.................................................Hello!

(2). ¡Buenos dias!.....................................Good morning!

(3). ¡Buenas dias!.....................................Good afternoon!

(4). ¡Buenas noches!................................Good evening/night!

* Notice that when you say "good morning" & "good evening" in Spanish you say "buenAS" instead of "buenOS".The differrence between the three is that there is one masculine and two feminine. In Spanish the things that are masculine end with an o and the things that a feminine end with an o. BuenOS is masculine and buenAS is feminine.

* In English when using exclamation marks you use them at the end of an sentence. In Spanish you use an exclamation mark in the beginning and in the end. The exclamation mark in the beginning is upside-down. An upside down exclamation mark looks like this: "¡ ". The reason for this upside down exclamation mark is that when you are reading in the Spanish language you automatically know from the beginning that this phrease/sentence is going to be said with emotion.

(5).¿Que tal?.........................................How are you?

(6). ¿Cómo val?....................................How are you?

(7). ¿Cómo estás tú?( Informal)...........How are you?

(8) ¿Cómo está usted? ( formal).............How are you?

(9) Muy bien gracias.............................Very well, thanks.

(10) Más o menos..................................Alright.

(11) Muy mal/ Terrible.......................... Awful/ Terrible

(12) ¿Y Tú ( informal).......................... And you?

(13) ¿Y Usted ( formal)..........................And you?

(14) ¡Ay,ay,ay!........................................Oh, no!

(15) ¡Que bien!.......................................Oh, good!

* In English when using question marks you use them at the end of the sentence. In Spanish you would use question marks in the beginning and ends of the sentences. Like the exclamation mark the question mark also has to be upside down in the beginning. an upside down question mark looks like this: "¿". The reason for this upside down is that when you begin to read a sentence in spanish you can automatically tell from the very beginning that a question is being asked.

(5) Es jueves……………………………………………………,,.. Its Thursay.

(7) Es sabado…………………………………………………… Its Saturday.

(8) Es domingo………………………………………………… Its Sunday.

·      When writing the days of the week in Spanish, they are never capitalizedas the are in English.

·      Notice that when what day of the week of asked, the word “hoy” should actually be pronounced as “oy”. Remember you drop the “h” sound.

·      Also, on a Spanish calender , the week doesn’t start with Monday instead of Sunday.
