Ian Burton Capstone 2021

Capstone Process Paper For my senior Capstone, I renovated a house with my mentor. The process took us about 7 months to complete. This process involved finding a house which was very easy because realtors called my mentor because they know that he buys houses. I believed that the property was a good choice because it was around my house and there were not too many problems. The reason I chose this project for my capstone was because it was important to me to get more involved in my mentor’s business. This is something I want to do in the future and having a mentor was a great way for me to learn the process of real estate investment This process allowed me to implement the SLA core values in the real world. After we actually bought the house, there were a lot of steps involved in completing this capstone. I used the core values of inquiry while I was researching the budget. I had to research prices and places to get every utility needed for the house. I had to research contractractors and their prices. Also it was important to my mentor that he did not always tell me how different things work like how to install windows or how to run water lines so he wanted me to research these topics and learn how to do it myself. A lot of collaboration was involved also we had contractors, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. We all had to work together a lot of the time all in the same room at the same time so it was very interesting. For the final presentation we wanted the house to be brand new so we installed new bathrooms, new kitchen, new drywall and floors throughout all the rooms. Also, we presented the house when we put it on Airbnb. Reflecting on the project, I realized the amount of work that was put into the project and the amount of time involved. Also I believe it was a great experience to have because not a lot of kids my age or even adults can do this. One of the major obstacles that we encountered was when me and my uncle broke all the stairs. This cost us more time and money that could have been put into something more important. Another obstacle was important objects being thrown away like light fixtures and speaker cover which was another expense that could have been avoided. One thing that makes me the most proud in this capstone was seeing the finished product of all my work and time. Also, I was proud of my ability to manage a property flip beginning to end. One thing I learned is that taking on a property flip was too much for a capstone project SLA is going to be better because I was able to show my peers that this a project that can be done by a teenager. Hayden's Capstone

My Capstone: I organized a cleanup around the school building that took place on May 8th. At first I wanted to do a nature cleanup as my capstone, but I decided that a block cleanup was much smarter. A block cleanup in Philadelphia will always require a lot of hands which is why it was the better option for an event. I decided that the school building was the best area to clean up because it is in an area with a lot of trash and commuters, and it is easily accessible to SLA students who want to participate in the cleanup. More than anything though, I wanted to make the city a cleaner place. Cities are cluttered with litter and pollution, which can not only hurt the environment, but lower the mood of everyone in the city, which is why I thought this event was especially important in this pandemic. The clean up was extremely successful; we picked up twenty bags of trash and ten people came out to help, not including my parents and I. The preparations for this cleanup were mostly bringing free trash bags, gloves, trash claws, snacks, water, and publicizing the event. I made an ad about a week before the cleanup and spread it everywhere I possibly could, with the help of some of my friends. Aside from posting my ad on my social media, I reached out to facebook groups, websites, and organizations to ask others for help. It was very exciting to see strangers showing up to my cleanup, because I had my doubts about it at first. Four of the ten people who showed up were from these efforts. The event lasted from 2 p.m - 5 p.m, but felt a lot faster than three hours. The event was focused around people dropping in and helping with a street before leaving, but almost all of the people who showed up stayed until 5 p.m, one of which arrived at the beginning of the event. After the cleanup, everyone took the trash bags to the dumpsters in front of the SLA entrance, and viewed the clean streets that they had all created.

Tristan Dini Inquiry Capstone Project

This website takes a look at the concepts that make up the complex idea of sustainability. There are three pillars of sustainability and there is no such thing as sustainable development if all three pillars can’t improve simultaneously.

Ethan Chen - Capstone

For my capstone project, I wanted to use my passion for running to somehow help the SLA community. What I came up with was to create a virtual 5k race. People inside or outside of the SLA community are welcome to sign up for the race. Participants of this race are allowed to complete the race however they like. They can walk, run, bike, swim, or a combination of other activities. The participants had a one-week window to complete the race. They have the freedom to choose a time, a route, and a method to accumulate a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) They have the option to do it all in one go or break it up over the week. My first step was to get the word out to the community about an upcoming 5k race. I sent out an interest survey to get an idea of how many people will participate. After getting my responses I was able to gather a rough estimate on how many people were interested. I started to budget my expenses on Google Spreadsheets and create three columns on the Sheets: a low bar, a middle bar, and a high bar. In the meantime, I attended Braskem meetings and pitched my proposed budget for my race. Once I reached full funding from the race, I ordered T-shirts and medals for my race. I set up my registration site and marketed my race all over social media and in the SLA advisory memo. The race sold out with 104 participants in total and raised $1942. After race week half of the participants submitted their results onto the result page and a few have submitted photos of themselves doing the race. Throughout the process, I learned a lot about what it takes to create a race from scratch and get people on board to participate in it. The COVID pandemic also presented me with challenges like how large gatherings are prohibited and not being at school to market my race in person. I had to work my way around those challenges but I am proud that I complete my capstone in an all-virtual learning environment.

For my capstone, I created a food blog that promoted a nutritionally well-balanced diet. On my blog, I posted weekly recipes as well as articles (written by myself) to present the research I conducted. With my capstone, I wanted to show my audience that healthy eating comes with many benefits that are integral throughout our body, including our immune system.

For my capstone project, I wanted to understand why the stereotype of Arab-Americans working simple jobs came to be. I researched the different waves of immigration from the middle east, but the part that I most wanted to show was the stories behind the stereotype.

Tayah Brunson's Capstone

Welcome to my capstone! My mission when completing my capstone this year was to make a voice for someone who may not have had one already. The topic being the pressures that may be felt by high school students during their careers. The information being targeted towards parents and teachers. This topic was perfect to surround my project around due to the stresses we all have faced as a student body and senior class during 2020-2021. This project is meant to shed light on the unspoken but surely felt pressures that high school students may crack from. My final project was a seminar/ Q&A for students and teachers.
